The publishers only allowed the first appearance of Spider-Man because the story appeared in a title they were cancelling (Amazing Fantasy 15#). Despite misgivings at Marvel, Spider-Man was a huge hit and so he was given his own series with the first issue having a cover date of March, 1963. The issue introduced J. Jonah Jameson, John Jameson, Chameleon, and Professor Newton created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditka. J. Jonah Jameson started his long time hatred of Spider-Man in this issue that also featured Spider-Man's failed attempt to join the Fantastic Four (Mr Fantastic, The Invisible Girl, the Human Torch, and the Thing). ("Spider-Man", "Spider-Man vs the Chameleon", Amazing Spider-Man 1#, Marvel Comic Event)
