here's a little excerpt from what i've written of 'arsonist's lullabye', which is the title of the cheerleader nat fic, to hopefully satiate your hunger temporarily:

Don’t fall for the player. This was a warning, circulating within the hallways of Avengers Institution, whispered under hushed breaths.  Students in this renowned college came from all walks of life — from children of billionaires to self-made achievers, from prodigal minds to brilliant brains. One thing stood for certain, though, and that was the infamous Y/N L/N. It was a rumour, tried and true, that every single girl —  regardless of sexuality, physical appearance, social status — would eventually fall under the spell of the school’s “player”. Try as they might, they helplessly fell victim to the player’s effortless charisma and unstoppable magnetism. The chase never lasted long. Once you had your eyes set on someone, there was no escaping the undeniable fact that the following morning, that girl would wake up in bed next to you. Problem was, you had this rule, written in stone: Never sleep with a girl more than once. Hence came the cruel and vicious cycle, of girls falling under your spell within seconds, only to have their heart broken within the next twenty-four hours. Sometimes even less. Boys looked on in jealousy, girls looked on in intrigue. (Or maybe jealousy, too.) The wiser ones kept a distance, but either way one fact stood true, the moment one stepped into Avengers Institution. Don’t fall for the player. Little did you know, you’d soon meet your match. A thorn in your plans, an unwanted distraction, your ultimate downfall.  All due to an equally irresistible girl by the name of Natasha Romanoff.

unfortunately i won't be able to finish this fic quite so soon, because i am going on a camping trip for about a week or so. until then, i guess i'll keep you waiting on your toes (thank you for your patience)

Sabrina had managed to do quite a lot (in her opinion) over the hour. She had relabeled anything surrounding the music box, added on to the report of reason for the relabeling, sent out a mail to her coworkers about it and put all of Michael’s drawings in a corner of her desk.

Once she got the message however, she put the file into her messenger bag and hurried out. Claiming she was taking her break to a coworker she passed.

Finding the hospital was rather easy, the hard part was finding the room. Once she actually got there she had taken at least three wrong turns.

So I recently learned that, in Warriors canon, Midnight and Sol were initially planned to be endgame villains. And, upon learning this, so many things clicked into place for Ailurocide. Like, genuinely, it was an incredible moment for me.

As with many characters, I’m planning on combining canon Warriors characters into one. One such character will be Sol, who will in turn be combined with both Jayfeather and Rock. I don’t have a name for this character just yet, but they will be immensely important for the plot.

Midnight will also be our endgame villain, the world’s creator, “god” by textbook definition, with a cult of followers that they view with great disdain due to their own personal beliefs and goals.

JayRockSol will be an escapee/former member of this cult.

AHH, hi!! Welcome back! ^^

And 🥺 It’s always so fun (and a bit shocking lol) to hear that others actually think about my story and work lol.

I’m gonna take this opportunity to say as well:

I’ve got some big things brewing in the works! I’m currently drawing up a proper map (my first map drawing! Very nervous to share lol) as well as ironing out some character kinks and piecing together the rough story line. There aren’t a whole lot of details just yet, but for the most part, we’ve got our plot, and the basis will be unfolded for y’all at some point in the next several weeks!

Hopefully we’ll be seeing some more major developments to the story sometime around April, though I can’t make any promises, as my life is very hectic at the moment. But yeah! Keep an eye out, send in any and all questions whenever you’d like, and keep notifs turned on here, cause once I get that ball rolling, it’s going to go fast.

Pyrokinesis & Queer Coding

Fire powers, or Pyrokinesis, in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series is coded as queer.

Pyrokinetics in the matchmaking system is the most obvious example. The challenges faced by Pyrokinetics in matchmaking closely resemble the way queer relationships are treated. Pyrokinetics will be automatically labeled a "bad match." Their relationship is seen as lesser and they will be treated poorly for it. This is shown most clearly with Brant and Jolie, where the stigma surrounding them drove Brant to join a rebel group and his rage turned destructive. In Lodestar, when discussing the unfairness of the matchmaking system (which is extremely heteronormative and likely homophobic), Dex uses Brant's pyrokinesis as an example.

Jolie and Brant would have had a much happier story if they could exist as themselves without the rest of the world's judgement. In her journal, Jolie refers to Brant being unable to form a good match or receive equal treatment as "the life that's been stolen from him."

From Nightfall: "But haven't you ever thought about how much it would've changed things if Brant… hadn't been told to deny who he was…?"

Having to hide and deny a significant part of yourself is an experience shared by queer people, Pyrokinetics, and queer Pyrokinetics. Sophie's first reaction to hearing about the ban on Pyrokinesis is to say "That still seems wrong. It's like they're not allowed to be who they are." Additionally, Fintan repeatedly states how important fire is to him and how difficult it is to live without.

From Exile: "A life with no heat- no fire- is not worth living."

From Exile: "Treated like the Talentless- with no way to satisfy my craving for flame. It's a daily struggle not to let my sanity slip away."

From Neverseen: "'I'm tired of disguises,' [Fintan] said. 'Tired of living like I'm the one with something to hide. Tired of letting you think I fear you. I stand before you now as the future of our world, every bit as unstoppable as my flames.'"

Another parallel between queerness and Pyrokinesis is the reaction of parents. Brant's parents abandoned him after he manifested, and although Marella's parents accepted her, she was worried that they wouldn't react well.

Revealing a Pyrokinetic's ability is compared to coming out. After Marella comes out to Sophie (and some others) in Nightfall, she says they can tell Linh and Dex, but she's only comfortable with friends and family knowing this important but highly stigmatized part of her.

Just before Marella is revealed to be a Pyrokinetic, Mr. Forkle is shown to use they/them pronouns to describe Marella. There are very few non-queer explanations for the use of they/them pronouns.

The shame that surrounds being a Pyrokinetic closely resembles internalized homophobia. In Exile, when Sophie is in Fintan's mind, she sees how he felt summoning everblaze; awed, relieved, and horrified all at once. Discovering queerness can be a relief to know who you are and find a community, and it can be awe-inspiring because queerness is beautiful, but it can also feel scary and upsetting. There are many conflicting emotions around realizing this and Fintan's reaction captures it well.

Mr. Forkle tells Marella in Lodestar that even if she wants and expects to be one way, and discovering that she is different can be painful, she may accept herself and know that this is how she's meant to be in the long run. This advice is useful for Marella when she soon manifests as a Pyrokinetic.

After she manifests, Mr. Forkle also tells Marella to have hope that the stigma around Pyrokinesis will lessen. She doubts this, seemingly resigned to the fact that she will be treated poorly for who she is. Even when she is granted some rights in Legacy, she knows they can be taken away at any moment.

Much like books, movies, and other media containing LGBTQ+ content, one of the top reasons for book banning, the Lost Cities censors books about Pyrokinesis. Book 1 explicitly states that most books on the subject were banned.

In addition to the general concept of Pyrokinesis resembling a queer narrative, individual Pyrokinetics in the series seem to be queer-coded.

When Sophie tries to heal Fintan in Everblaze, the primary emotion he responds to his pride. This may have been a coincidence on Shannon's part, but the connotation of pride does seem a bit queer. Fintan is also repeatedly shown to have a flair for the dramatic, a stereotype associated with gay men. When he learns that Marella is a Pyrokinetic, he is determined to change the world for the better for her.

Marella's relationship to Linh Song is at least somewhat coded romantically. Legacy states that "Linh's been training with Marella a lot." The italics seem like they're meant to imply something; they aren't necessary unless they are intended to be suggestive. Marella's file in Unlocked also references rumors of Marella and Linh doing "additional training together." Why rumors? This could easily be a fact. Usage of the word "rumors" reads as the training as something meant to be kept hidden, like they don't want the world to know about what happens between them. The language around Marella and Linh's relationship is unnecessarily dramatic unless it is specifically meant to foreshadow a relationship.

In conclusion, the overall ability is queer coded, and every Pyrokinetic is inherently queer.

Been overthinking this for days so here we go, under the cut bc this got a lil rambly:

the IMF as an institution is a tool of global economic terrorism mostly utilized by the United States to destabilize countries that a) hold nationalized resources the us gov't wants access to, b) are engaging in a form of economic growth that threatens the Washington Model (see: what was done to Korea post WWII, for example), or c) that house or are sympathetic to forms of ""communism"" or ""religious extremism"" in whatever form most currently convenient.

everybody talks (and rightly so) about how the US gov't has, via the CIA, orchestrated assassinations, overthrown governments, and caused general public chaos both at home and abroad, but like. the IMF bills itself as an independent organization aimed at helping struggling nations, except that the largest lender/donor country is the United States, and they have almost explicitly operated as a safeguard of US economic interests abroad.

they have essentially one set of protocols, which they throw like a net over everyone who comes to them for help: cut inflation by raising interest rates and cutting government funding for social safety nets. which is basically just the standing order for US monetary policy but on steroids. they put the client country on this plan whether inflation is the actual problem or not--and frequently, it's not--and then watch as the nation either starves its citizenry out trying to keep up with these demands, or defaults.

there's a book I read for undergrad called globalization and its discontents: revisited by joseph stiglitz which covers a bunch of things, but one of them is the role the IMF has played in curbing and crushing a lot of developing economic models over the decades in pursuit/defense of US economic interests, which I highly recommend if you'd like another reason to be incandescent with rage lmfao.

I care so deeply for OFND; it’s a project that is so very personal and almost intimate for me, for a lack of a better word. I’ve always been a writer, a world builder, at heart, so I suppose it just made sense that this is what I would ultimately end up with

And? Hearing that other people care about it the same way, find so much joy and interest in every element that I’ve been able to present?? It’s. The best feeling in the world.
