apparently a canadian journalist wrote a book called Seven Shoulders where he hitchhiked across america wearing blackface and an afro wig to learn about race relations in the US, mostly by white people not wanting to give him a ride. to critique just one part of this terrible idea, if i saw a canadian in blackface trying to hitchhike, i wouldn’t ignore him because i thought he was black, i’d be assuming justin trudeau had fallen on hard times and he seems like he’d be a very annoying person to be in a car with

A Canadian journalist is defending his decision to travel the U.S. in blackface and write a book about racism, after facing a storm of criticism online.
"Last summer, I disguised myself as a Black man and traveled throughout the United States to document how racism persists in American society," Sam Forster, who is white, posted Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter. "Writing Seven Shoulders was one of the hardest things I've ever done as a journalist."
The reaction was swift and brutal, with X users expressing anger, amusement and confusion, and telling Forster he should have simply spoken to Black people to understand their experiences.
"It's hard to simultaneously draw the ire of black people, white people, conservatives, AND liberals… But I think you've just done it," rapper and podcaster Zuby replied on X.
Several Black scholars who study race relations and write about the Black experience told CBC News that Forster's use of blackface is dehumanizing and troublesome, regardless of the context. Forster himself defended the book and the methods he used to write it in an interview with CBC News. [...]
Institutional racism (the anti-Black variety) is effectively dead," Forster concludes in the book. "Most of what's left of racism in this country are the few, socially narrow opportunities for soft interpersonal racism: shoulder racism." [...]

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke at Al Sharpton’s National Action Network 2024 Convention, activists and organizers from Black Alliance for Peace and PSL disrupted the event. They denounced Jeffries and Sharpton as Black Misleaders, boldly proclaiming that the duo doesn’t represent the majority of Black/African people and instead provides a Blackface cover to U.S. imperialism. Jeffries received over $700,000 in Israel lobby funding in the last election cycle alone. Last year, Jeffries led a bipartisan Congressional delegation to the CARICOM Heads of Government Conference where NO HAITIANS were in the room as the the invasion and occupation of the country was planned. The collective liberation of Africa and Africans is not guaranteed without the liberation of Palestine, Haiti, or even the Borough of Brooklyn that Jeffries was elected to represent instead of approving more money to IOF-trained NYPD!

TW: Blackface and racism.
Tumblr media
Yeah, if you’re seriously defending this, please go ahead and block me.
The fact that this person wasn’t asked to leave by the con staff makes it that much worse.
“Oh, but it wasn’t blackface because they were cosplaying as a fictional demon.”
Alastor’s skin complexion isn’t that dark in the show and other Alastor cosplayers have never done blackface when cosplaying as the character.
This person was just looking for an excuse to act like a racist dumbass in a public setting.
Normalizing this shit is just going to encourage more racist cosplayers to attempt a similar stunt. And I’m frankly getting sick and tired of racism and bigotry being normalized in nerd spaces.
If you don’t push back against this behavior now, it will start to fester and become unbearable.

I’m so glad that we live in a time and culture where every once in awhile millionaire musicians will publicly air out their grievances with each other via song. That sounds like something that would happen in ancient China but no it’s happening right now in current day everybody say thank you black people

A White journalist donned Blackface for an experiment. He decided to write a book about it.

But hang on, it gets better. After everything he went through, he still thinks that institutional racism doesn't exist.

But I speculate that there might be much more insidious reasons as to why Sammy boy here is dismissing systemic racism. Sammy boy is a journalist and guess who does he write for?

For those not in the know, Nationalpost and the Spectator are conservative rags. Nationalpost has been criticized for being pro-Israel and islamophobic, even spreading misinformation about Iran in 2006, while the Spectator has been supportive of Brexit, islamophobic and transphobe Douglas Murray is a frequent contributor as well.
Anyways, if you have goodreads, please bomb this book with one star reviews. And check out these books if you can:

Scottish blackface sheep! They’re the UK’s most common sheep breed. Both ewes and rams can grow horns!
[ID: an illustration of a sheep with fluffy white wool and black fur on its face and legs. It has curled horns and is trotting to the left. The background is a pink to yellow gradient with swirly designs. End.]

i've been kind of glib about this (and perhaps not making things any better by giving the show my attention with redesigns without making it very clear they are borne from criticsm), but speaking more bluntly i don't think vivziepop has earned any kind of congratulations for getting hazbin hotel made until she intentionally and wholly apologizes for, at the very least, her history of anti-blackness as it manifests in her show.
in particular she needs to apologize for everything involving alastor-- it is frankly quite stunning how he both encapsulates the vilification of black people's spiritual practices and long-standing stereotypes of those of african decent (portraying voudou as an evil magic and his noted cannibalism) and yet is simultaneously whitewashed of any clear signifiers that he is black/biracial. as a black louisiana creole myself (as he is as well), he is the most egregious example of the kind of disrespect she feels for black people and their cultures, and as long as he continues to exist in an official capacity in her lineup she has earned nothing but ire in my eyes.
