So I still really love Metal Slug Tactics but I can't deny this game is buggy as hell. The weird thing though is none of these bugs really show up until you start unlocking new characters and equipment. So the average player might not even run into any of these bugs until their second or third complete run through the game which can be several hours in. Here's a short list of some of the bugs I've encountered.

Using Alice to control a Metal Slug or Slug Walker causes a constant chirping sound that will not go away. Sound persists after a victory and into the main title screen. Game needs to be reset.

Sync attacks caused by Fio's Germi style ability causes the game to crash. Not sure how repeatable this glitch is, I ended up abandoning that run.

Rescuing a P.O.W. with one of Nadia's robots causes the game to crash. I think the game is trying to give the robots XP but they don't have their own XP tracker.

If Nadia's robot is out while she is turned into a Mummy, when she becomes Human again she retains the Mummy melee attack since her robot is still using her pistol. This glitch is extra wacky because Nadia's sprite just won't have arms!

I really hope the game does get patched and optimized. It's such a fun tactics game but I'm constantly running into crashes and slowdowns.

The first complaints began to come mainly from Pixel 6 owners who encountered the problem when the update began to roll out. Initially, Google ignored the problem and it quickly began to spread to other Pixel series smartphones. There are now almost half a thousand messages in Google's problem-tracking system.  Moreover, some users insert log files or screenshots. Others said they couldn't provide screenshots because the phone said it didn't have free space to save them. Some have compared the experience to being infected with ransomware.

Adobe Broke Photoshop in 2023 (October Update)

Back in July, I made a post detailing how bad Photoshop has gotten for me this year, which you can read here. But if you want a tldr version of it, following new years Photoshop stability and reliability has taken a nose dive with constant crashes that prevent auto recover from being as effective to glitches that make working in it a nightmare. Its been over 3 months since I made that post and I kinda wanted to do an update on how photoshop has been. Has it actually gotten better? Kind of but not really. In some ways, its gotten better, in others worse but generally not much has changed. I guess two positives that come to mind is that one of the afformention glitches I noted was patched up at some point in July, so I was able to update finally. Though, I didnt experience the backlash from not updating photoshop like I had in March (fuck you Adobe). And I havent been experiencing the left click lock as much, although thats more to do with me not doing certian commands that I found could trigger it than adobe actually being a good company and fixing it. There's a thread on the adobe forums about this issue, and according to one of most recent posts as of the 22nd, they run a photo company and have called Adobe support 5 times about this issue, and it seems that no one at Adobe knows about this glitch. Yes a billion dollar company who sells programs at inflated prices because they're "industry standard" knows nothing about a single bug that has been in the program for 6 months, but will gladly add in new features no one will use.

Now when I say things got worse, crashes started happening more frequently again in late September and Early October. But instead of happening weekly, they happened almost every fucking day. One day I would have a crash, the next day nothing would happen, before a crash happening the following day. And what was more crushing about this was that it happened while I was dealing with selections and flatting comic pages... whats funny about this is that not only can selections not be recovered if you close the file (even if you save), but can only be saved by pressing a seperate save button which has no keyboard commands. Which made these crashes more horrible than if I had been inking or sketching. Once again, I consulted the Adobe forums for help and once again, the solution was to update my gpu driver which was out of date. I don't think its the fact that I had already done this and nor that somehow, the driver I had been using since March was already out of date by September that makes this situation so ridiculous. But its the fact that I've pretty much had to bend over to change my pc just so I could run photoshop within the same year. In contrast to how things were before 2023 where I didn't have to do a single thing and photoshop ran fine. Its only this year that for some divine reason that the program decided to be shit to me.

So why was I still using it if it was so bad? It was because of my first Chapter. Around the time I had that initial post, I was still hard at work on finishing my comic's first Chapter which has taken me 4 years to complete. I had anticipated getting it done around that time, but due to burn out I ended up taking much longer, finishing it on October 13th. During those final few months, I decided that upon finish Chapter 1, I would be done with photoshop and moving onto a different art program for the rest of my comic. And that program ended up being Clip Studio Paint which I got as an early birthday present from my dad, following photoshop crashing on me two times in that day, the latter happening an hour after I took a break to calm myself down after the first crash....I wish I was making that up. I went with CSP due to the fact that most tapas artists I know use it and because of the many good things they've said about it. Its a pretty highly regarded program, and even if my motive for buying it wasn't because of Photoshop's "quirks", it has features that make producing comics much faster in CSP than in photoshop. So with CSP in my hands, you'd think the nightmare would be over, right?

You so, my plan was to use CSP for my comic starting with Chapter 2 but after spending some time in the program, I realized I probably wouldn't be knowledgeable enough or adapted to it enough just in time for me to start drawing Chapter 2 with a release date of early 2024. So in the end, I decided to wait until Chapter 3 to make the switch, while limiting myself to CSP for spur of the moment drawing ideas and illustrations. Yes, Photoshop has been a complete failure to me but I am way more experienced with it than with Clip Studio. I dont want there to be a potential quality drop following the most recent episode and I want to be sure I can use it before jumping into creating comics. This isnt like the switch from traditional to digital for my comic back in 2021, because I had already had more than a years worth of experience with photoshop and digital drawing by that time. Because of that, the switch wasn't as rough as it would've been if I had done it earlier. But for the time being, Im still going to be using photoshop for Chapter 2, and my character sheets of course. Given how long I spent on Chapter 1, you might think Im crazy for wanting to use the program for another 4 years but I don't anticipate this chapter taking as long, due to skill and because its much shorter in comparison.

Im not going to lie, I have mixed feelings on continuing to use Photoshop for my comic. On one hand, Im glad I wont need to worry about a potential quality drop but on the other, I dont know how long I can handle crashes and glitches that only seem to persist as time goes on. I'll just pray to God to give me strength during the drawing of Chapter 2 once I finish thumbnailing. Hopefully, I and photoshop will be able to last.....

NBA 2K24 PC review: A crash course in alienating your fanbase

Every year's releases are discussed in comparison to their predecessors. This is especially relevant to yearly sports championships. Is this merely a rehash of the previous game with upgraded rosters, one could wonder? Like NBA 2K23 and 2K22 before it, NBA 2K24 is a last-gen PC game. In reality, NBA 2K24 on PC doesn't even need to be compared to its PS5 and Xbox Series counterparts to demonstrate how terrible the experience it provides is. This is largely due to the performance bug that has afflicted several games in 2023. I tried to go in with an open mind and enjoy myself as much as possible. This is my job, after all, and you need that mindset in times of hardship, like having to go through NBA 2K24‘s constant crashing on PC. Only those who have endured this dark fate know the feeling of getting punched in the gut each time you start developing thoughts of having fun. Yet, there is fun to be had, theoretically speaking. Gameplay Actually playing basketball in NBA 2K24 is rather pleasant. Animations are fluid and realistic. Moving around the court, dribbling, and shooting feels natural relative to the athletes’ statures and abilities. Playing good defense is possible but is beaten by good offense, as it should be. The AI doesn’t appear to be brainless, though I did yell on a couple of occasions when I had a guy running toward the basket on an open break just to have him fade away to the three-point line as soon as I passed the ball. Other than the crashes, I didn’t experience any glitches or overpowered or broken mechanics. The one gripe I have is that pulling off an excellent release on Hall of Fame difficulty is nigh on impossible, especially with unfamiliar shot releases, but, you know, gaming journalist difficulty and all that. All in all, NBA 2K24 is good for a game of basketball. But we all know there’s more to it than that. MyCAREER MyCAREER is where you go to live out your NBA dreams. Creating your MyPLAYER gives you all the usual facial and body customization options, plus a face scan for extra immersion. That’s ripped away by you selecting which team you get drafted by rather than the other way around. I understand the choice of giving players the option to hoop for their favorite team right away, but in exchange, we’re left with no pre-NBA experience at all—no draft combine, no team workouts, and obviously no draft. Instead, you get dropped straight into the Neighborhood, where you’re be presented with frequent quests, and I’m using that word very lightly. Completing these quests is a decent early source of VC, but that’s it. They’re given by random, unvoiced characters, tasking you with challenges in areas of the Neighborhood. You can freely roam the Neighborhood and play numerous offline and online formats with friends or strangers on the internet. They are mostly fun, but beware that playing online formats without a pre-made party can result in tear-inducing wait times. There’s not much of a story going on, but I’m not a fan of needlessly bloated stories in basketball games anyway, so found the Neighborhood to be a refreshing playground for when you’re not in NBA matches. It’s a smart choice to avoid another cringe-inducing story like some recent NBA 2K entries. You also have your NBA career to worry about. There isn’t too much to it, really. You play league games and gradually progress your character’s stats, popularity, and endorsements. It’s a simple system and that’s why I appreciate it. I just like playing basketball in my basketball game. The pace of progression is solid, despite what was said in previews of the game. I was instantly averaging a double-double with my 60 OVR center, including online games, and leveled up quite a bit for each play session. We are the instant gratification generation, but that’s not video games’ problem to solve. MyTEAM Collecting collectibles for your collection, the game mode. MyTEAM is seemingly centered around building a strong team to compete with, but in actuality, it’s a completionist’s wet dream and worst nightmare all at once. There are many, and I mean many different collections to complete—players, different versions of the same players, team logos, uniforms, court floors, and arenas (yes, they are separated), shoes, and other trinkets. The list is seemingly endless, and that’s the whole point. If you don’t obsess over bringing every single collection to its completion, there is fun to be had in the numerous single-player and multiplayer modes in MyTEAM. Some of them overlap with stuff you can do in MyCAREER, but you’re not playing with a MyPLAYER, so it’s different enough. In NBA 2K24, all VC you obtain, through the extent of your skills or the depth of your wallet, is shared between MyCAREER and MyTEAM. This also affects Season Passes. Even if you prefer one mode to the other, you could use both for acquiring capital that you can then spend in your preferred mode. This is a player-friendly mechanic that allows for more freedom of choice on what you wish to play and when, so I’m all for it. Mamba Moments We’ve seen similar modes in the past. In Mamba Moments, you get to play seven legendary games from Kobe Bryant’s career. You’re given three objectives to complete in each game to match Kobe’s real-life performance. You even get trophies and achievements for it. I have a soft spot for these kinds of NBA 2K game modes, so its addition gets an approving nod from me. It’s a touching tribute to the Mamba. MyLEAGUE This is an ideal time to out myself as a nerd who primarily plays MyLEAGUE. I just love seeing how the league’s history develops and NBA 2K24’s MyLEAGUE scratches that itch. You can play yourself or run a franchise as its General Manager in MyGM, for decades or select a single-season experience in the NBA or WNBA, or play through a playoff bracket of your design. It’s also possible to play with standard teams and rosters or customize the league to your liking. There are options for everyone and there’s nothing better a game can provide its players. Just look at my Jacksonville Celtics for proof. And yes, I did pick Derrick White specifically for this pic. Sorry Derrick, that Heat playoff loss and now this. Performance If you came in reading the title and were looking for confirmation bias against the calamity that is NBA 2K24, you might be wondering what I’m on about, as I’ve been mostly positive throughout. I firmly stand behind the claim that NBA 2K24 is a decent to good basketball game. If you are able to play it. I have never persisted through such poor game performance in my entire life. That’s partially because I wouldn’t willingly slam my head against a wall in my spare time, and I didn’t review any of 2023’s trainwrecks, God bless. Then again, if NBA 2K24 wasn’t so poorly optimized for PC, I would have played rather than persisted and fully enjoyed it rather than almost enjoyed it. Crash is in the title and crashes are in the game. I didn’t count the exact number, because I didn’t think I’d need to, but NBA 2K24 must have crashed at least a dozen times, including three times in the same match. It crashed in regular Play Now games, it crashed in the Neighborhood, it crashed during a MyTEAM challenge, it crashed in the MyGM menu. There was no safe space for me anywhere in this game, the crash was always there, lurking and waiting to take all enjoyment out of my playing session. All this coupled with the stripped-back narrative and lack of cross-play between PC and current-gen consoles shows the PC player base is being left behind, yet again by NBA 2K. Conclusion NBA 2K24’s PC port left me emotionally scarred, like a morbid master torturing its victim by giving it minor amounts of fun before stripping it all away. I didn’t develop Stockholm syndrome, but I can see that there’s something decent buried deep underneath all of the performance issues, which aren’t exclusive to PC and old-gen, by the way. He’s making tea when he first sees it. An early morning, his mother still asleep and the haze of just past sunrise settling over the world as he pulls the kettle with him to the sink to fill it up. His mind about just as foggy as the air outside, wiping sleep from his eyes before setting his gaze through the window above the sink; and he has to do a double take at the shape that’s standing under a tree behind the fence line.

He turns off the tap.

He can’t make out much of the details from where he’s standing, but that hardly matters in the face of its impossibility. A black shape with almost undefined edges and a shape that could have been human but… wrong, somehow. Fundamentally wrong. Like staring into a shadowed void that made his eyes water when he tried to look closer, a lack of tangibility looking like cracking static or a bug in the very nature of reality, a glitch personified and absolutely covered, head to monstrous toe, in glowing, never once blinking, bright green eyes. Fingering, with impossible clawed fingers and predatory intent, through decaying box of old books and magazines and things from the attic he’d left there with still every intention to throw out.

And then the thing's head turns, snaps its hundreds of eyes all at once to focus on him as he ducks down behind the counter. Eyes wide, unstable as he lowers himself on the floor, back pressed up against the cupboard under the sink and brings a shaking hand to press against his mouth. The heavy weight of a thousand eyes all focused on him in that moment, as his mouth goes bone dry with a thing that stands what feels like right behind him. Just waiting, and watching him, and seeding his dread and just waiting for that one movement, that once excuse to crash through that window and end him before he can even let out a scream.

It takes hours of nothing happening for him to work up the nerve to move again. To pull himself up over the counter enough to peek and see the spot by the tree empty. It doesn’t bring him the relief he thought it would, not with the still constant impression of that thing still watching him, now unseen when before he at least could have had the knowledge of where it was.

It's gone now, he can't see it and oh god that just makes it so, so much worse.

The space under the tree is empty, the yard itself is as lonely as he's come to expect but he can still feel those eyes. And he stands, staring through the kitchen window, trying very hard to find it again with frantic eyes swept over the yard, picking through and focusing on every dark corner and hiding place. Expecting, with some awful dread for it to be very, very close all at once from where it’s hiding, to smash through the window or to appear right behind him, even as the feeling of hundreds and thousands of eyes all focused at once still persists, has him pinned down where he's stood. Waiting for him to make a move, for him to do… something. Something he's not sure of, and that fact alone makes him very afraid. That one wrong movement, one wrong action and it's all over. And he can't see it but oh god, he can feel that it can see him.

And in that moment, all he could think beyond the fear as he backed away from the window slowly, shaking under the feeling of that relentless gaze trained on him and waiting to strike, was that when it did inevitably come, (as by now he was sure it would even as it bided its time) all he could do was just hope it would be quick and painless.

The relentless choking dread whispered a very, very different story.

After a few more hours of thumbing through books and not daring to step back into the kitchen or anywhere near a window, the feeling faded. Slowly, no discernable moment where it all cut off, maybe just enough to not notice him so much… He worked up the nerve enough to move, to push through the door and past that threshold enough to step outside and search for a minute or two, to make sure before he gripped his shoulder bag tighter and started his trek to work.

Never stopping once, tense as all hell, jumping at shadows and trying very hard to resist that urge to look over his shoulder, or to entertain that constant fear and feeling of eyes, watching from just out of sight.

The box of books was gone. At the square of empty pressed grass all he could do was swallow it down, and squeeze the straps of his bag again, and keep walking.

A quick question, were you encountering some sort of performance issues or bugs when playing Pokemon Violet? My friends happen to encounter a lot of performance issues when playing like lags, framerate dropping, delay of battle transitions, and some bugs like character floating/moving around during battle.

Hahaha...oh god. Okay, you're gonna want to sit down for this one.

Yeah, the game lags like crazy. Things are constantly juttering. Transitions take a while. There are constant little visual glitches, like seeing under the planet, things just not loading in, the Pokeball just hovering in midair when you're catching a flying type. When you're paused, Pokemon still move by the way, so they'll run into you while you're saving and just disappear, then reappear somewhere around you once you leave and often smack right into you. To make this incredibly clear, how pretty it can look for a screenshot aside, this is the most visually disastrous game I've seen...maybe ever. It is bad, Aera. It's so bad that literally everyone I have talked to about it has been like "It's gonna be patched, right? There's no way they can leave it at this level of quality." I've never seen something produced to this level of broad-scale performance issues. The only game I can think of that's worse than this is Atelier Firis' constant crashing any time you go underwater, rendering two areas nigh-impossible to clear. It's not as constantly bad as that, but no one is playing this game to look at it.

Also fun fact: you can't turn off battle animations. At all. Ever. So there's no helping it.

Balan Wonderworld Demo |Can It Still Be a Wonderful Game?|

When Balan Wonderworld was first announced, I was interested since It was Square Enix’s first platformer and Yuji Naka ( led programmer of the Sonic series and NiGHTS into DREAMS) was developing it. The demo for the game was announced a few days ago, I downloaded and play it for myself and... it’s not good. At all. While the presentation of the of the game is nice, but the overall game is riddled with bizarre design choices, severely barebones controls, stiff animations, and gameplay is so boring and dull that leaves me a bit disappointed. Instead of only focusing on the negatives of the game, I’m gonna list at least 5 ways to fix and improve Balan Wonderworld. 

1# More Freedom

Let’s get the big elephant out of the room. The controls in Balan Wonderworld are stiff, floaty and worse, severely limited. All the game give is the ability to jump... on almost every button. You can switch to different costumes which is slow and awkward and even some costumes like the Jack-o-lantern and the dragon outright takes your ability to jump, which is the MOST BASIC thing you can do in a platformer and that’s incredibly troublesome in situations; and in 2021, it’s just laughable.

How to resolve this big problem? By giving the player more freedom. Give the players more action controls like sprint, climb, grabbing ledges, wall-jump in human form and elaborate more on the costumes like the dragon and wolf costumes and give more move-sets let the player gets creative with them instead of limiting into just one.

2# Crafty Levels

Speaking of the creativity, most of the levels in Balan Wonderworld are so bland, boring, linear, and basic that you can cheese some of the obstacles. some of the puzzles in the game are sleep-inducing and the combat scarce that you’ll forget the there was one.

To keep players engaged on your game, you gotta be more thoughtful on the level design. Use tutorials effectively or let the levels (like in Mega Man X) teaches the player the basics of the game and the spice up the difficulty to let the player genuinely feel like they figured out a problem on their own without insulting or frustrating them.

3# Needs More of... You

I know I’m going sound like one of those people, but the customization in Balan Wonderworld is so barebones that you’ll only get to change the two main characters skin and hair color... and nothing more and I’m afraid that.

If you want the player to be themselves, I’d suggest that give players more customization option be more self-indulged in the game. Games like Pokémon lets you customized your characters and platformers like New Super Mario Bros. U( only exclusive to side modes) and Sonic Force(thought the avatars are animals but still.) let you do this, so why can’t Balan Wonderworld?

4# Balan as NiGHTS? Deja vu?

In Balan Wonderworld, you’ll find a “hiding” golden top hat in each stage and it’ll take you into a special stage to take control of Balan in.. Quick Time Events? Ok, the QTEs are very dated this day-and-age and in Balan Wonderworld, it felt so slapped on.

If you what the special stage to be rewarding and interesting, have Balan control as NiGHTS. Not only it’s gonna feel right at home with NiGHTS/Sonic/SEGA fans, but make Balan feel unique in their own right.

5# Please Stand By

Technical issues galore. Constant crashes in the PC version, muddy graphics in certain areas, models T-posing, NPCs fading way and the Switch version is so abysmal with its dark shading, frame rates dipping in the 20s, and screens turning black that’ll make it almost unplayable.

Simply the devs are going to iron out the bugs glitches (mostly on the switch version) and have patches to fix these issues in day one when the game is release.

So that’s all of my 5 list of thing that need to fixed and improve in Balan Wonderworld. It's really sad to see a game that you like will end up looking so unpolished and bland. I have nothing but respect for Yuji Naka, and if he wants his last chance in the gaming industry to be good, I highly suggest that Naka and Square Enix to reconsidering delay the game and to give feedback and improve upon these issues.
