Working on a production of Cripple of Inishmaan at the tender age of 16- which was 20+ years ago- has made it so that anytime someone mentions tuberculosis, I just whisper “so it’s the tb after all” and I want to fight Martin McDonough in a bare-knuckle brawl.

Legs of Lamb for The Cripple of Inishmaan
Tumblr media
These are some large legs of lamb that I made for a production of the play The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh. They had to be big enough to be visible when an actor carried them onstage under each arm, so they ended up being about 16” to 17” long.
Tumblr media
For inspiration, I looked at pictures on Google of those giant turkey legs that they sell at Renaissance Faires. And I of course revisited this scene from Serial Mom...
Tumblr media
For the meaty parts, I used an electric kitchen knife to carve large sections of upholstery foam into generally chunk of lamb meat-like shapes. Then I found some plastic bones (I think they were human femurs, but don’t quote me on that) and then I cut slits in the foam lamb chunks and shoved the bones in there, using low-temp hot glue to keep them in place. High-temp hot glue can melt upholstery foam and cheap plastics, resulting in awful fumes and napalm-like crap on your fingers.
Tumblr media
Once that was all together, since the play is set in rural Ireland in the 30’s I covered the meat parts in burlap to make them “to-go” style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure Cover Your Meat Parts in Burlap is actually the title of another Martin McDonagh play about back-in-the-day Ireland.

Scene 05 - 01 - Kate
From: The Cripple of Inishmaan, by Martin McDonagh
Genre: Comedy
Topic: Letter, loss
Character: Female
What’s this now? I can’t make out even two words in this sentence with his writing… ‘But if it’s a big success I am… it might only be two or three months before I am too busy with acting work to be getting in touch with ye too often at all… so if ye don’t hear from me much from summertime on… don’t be worrying about me. It’ll only mean I’m happy and healthy and making a go of me life in America. Making something of meself for ye and Mammy and Daddy to be proud of. Give my love to everyone on the island except Johnnypateen and take care of yourselves, Kate and Eileen. You moan the world to me… mean the world to me.’ It looks like ‘moan.’ ‘Yours sincerely… Billy Claven.’ Turned his back on us, he has, Eileen.

THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN
Bear Pit Theatre, Stratford upon Avon, Friday 1st March, 2019
Martin McDonagh is one of the finest stage- and screenwriters currently working.  This production of his play from 1996 clearly demonstrates his use of Irish settings, idioms and characters, mining the same comedic vein as Father Ted and Stones in His Pockets.   On the craggy island of the title, news comes…

Blue, you're my Broadway Oracle and I've learned a lot from FN and your replies here. Re. the ask about (apparently slow?) ticket sales for The Minutes, I didn't realise the theatre was so large. I sort of assumed the big spaces were for big musicals or big crowd-pleasing revivals. Do original plays really sell out theatres that size? When you say TM doesn't have a star, do you mean like a Hollywood A-lister? Stunt-casting annoys me but I guess I get it... they move tickets even if they're bad.
Studio 54 is actually smaller than the Cort, where the show was originally supposed to be. The Golden is the smallest (commercially owned) theatre on Broadway, and its seating capacity is 804. Studio 54's is 1,006. The Cort was 1,082, and yes it is possible for a play to sell out every single seat. The Gershwin, where Wicked plays, is the largest theatre at 1,933. The Imperial, which originally housed Les Mis and usually houses musicals, is 1,417. So there is a difference between houses meant for plays and houses meant for musicals, though there is crossover. The Schoenfeld, where Come From Away is, is only 1,080, whereas the Shubert regularly sold out its 1,502 seats for To Kill a Mockingbird.
When I say 'star' I mean a name that a tourist from the middle of nowhere knows that causes them to buy a ticket during their limited window of opportunity while here in the city. Outside of the Broadway world, no one is going to know who Jessie Mueller is. They might recognize Tracy Letts from movies like The Post and Little Women, but they're not going to know his name. And if they didn't watch Schitt's Creek, they're going to have no idea who Noah is. A play about a city council meeting is probably not enough to sway them away from Hamilton. Stunt-casting annoys me, too, but only when it's so obviously stunt-casting. There are plenty of Hollywood A-listers whose background is in theatre. They've just been too busy doing movies and TV that they haven't gotten a chance to return to it yet, but I'd dare anyone who saw Denzel Washington in Fences or Daniel Radcliffe in The Cripple of Inishmaan or Tom Hiddleston in Betrayal to argue that they did a bad job.
