It's a New Year! It feels like a new season. I didn't really stop working over the Christmas break but theres something about a new year that fills me with hunger and drive I'm really looking forward to getting my teeth stuck in photographing some beautiful houses this year.

8:30am

After making breakfast for the family and walking the dog I set my agenda out for the day. Today is an organising day! Catching up with collegues, clients, potentual clients, letting everyone know I'm here in 2018 and I mean business this year!

11:00am

Time to get everything charged and ready. I have a shoot in Haslemere tomorrow, the first of 2018, the weather is meant to be sunny but very very windy. It's nice to have a day just to get everything ready for a new 'season' of property photography. I update all the software on my computer (except the operating system to high sierra, I've heard other photographers having some issues and I'm not brave enough to risk upgrading yet). I ensure all my files are in the correct places so that when I come back tomorrow I can import the images without having to mess about with folders in 'Capture One Pro 11'.

2:00pm

Now the fun begins, I've charged all my batteries, cleaned the sensors on the cameras, now I need to tackle my kit bags. It's quite a task...

I empty my entire main bag. I've got old receipts, batteries - some new, some old that I need to test. Clamps, rain covers, you name it I've got it in my bag but that bag is in absolute chaos!

First things first, I go through all my memory cards. I organise my cards as follows:

SD card holders for microSD cards which go in my Phantom 4 Pro Drone

SD cards, mostly used in the 'backup slot' of my Nikon D800

CF cards, These are my main on location storage. I've built up quite a collection over the years. Back when I used to shoot weddings I would use 2GB CF cards with my Nikon D3. The D3 was one if not 'the' first DSLR to introduce a flexible dual card system. I was able to fit around 70 files on each CF card, I would then swap them when full for another 2 2GB cards. The reason I shot on cards of this size was that if something should go wrong with the cards I would only lose 70 shots as opposed to an entire wedding. I think I only had one shoot where 5 or so images were corrupted, it's never 'touch wood' happened to date at a house.

These days things are very different I can only get 14-15 pictures from my D800e on one of these 2GB cards. So my main 'work horse' cards are 32 and 64 GB sizes made by Sandisk. In fact I think all my memory cards are made by sandisk! This is just something which goes back to the days again of shooting weddings where I'd found a brand that worked well with Nikon and dare not risk changing brands incase something went wrong.

They're damned good cards though, and since shooting digital back in 2004-5 Sandisk products have never let me down.

Shooting property these days I still utalise the dual card slots on my camera. My main slot has a Sandisk CF card (anything up to 64GB). The second card slot is set on my camera to 'backup' and holds a 128GB SD card. As I am shooting I am also culling in camera the images so that when I get back I have a solid set of images to load straight into Capture One. The Second card slot marked back up however holds every shot I've taken. I then transfer all the imagesfrom the 128GB backup card to an external hard drive in the background whilst I'm retouching images. After this everything is backup again to a secure cloud based location with unlimited storage (I have very fast internet). Each property folder is set out on my computer a little like this:

I test all my flash units and invent new ways to use them in the process. The one below is created to produce fill or directional light both below and above the camera (using a light sphere on top which is basically like large Tupperware on top of a flash if I'm honest) It's just something which I can hold in extremely tight spaces with one hand firing multiple lights in multiple directions.
