TW: this ask is about a meme that I am unsure if it is intended to trigger paranoia, so I just wanted to add this warning to warn you before you read the part where I mention the meme, because like I said I am unsure and I don’t want to unintentionally trigger paranoia in you.
(I am not sure if tumblr compresses spaces but the intention after these parenthesis is to add a lot of spaces because I am unable to find the read more button for asks)
Tw for the meme mention coming up in three lines
Is the meme “The fog is coming” one of those memes that is intended to cause paranoia? If it’s not, I assume I still have to tag it as unreality or TW: unreality?
I honestly have not really encountered this meme in the wild much and had to look it up. But yes, according to the website "know your meme", the phrase started as a way to induce fear. And the spread of the meme was for the same purpose.
I haven't seen it be used to harass people with psychosis online in the same way other similar memes have. But I could easily see how it can and probably has induced paranoia and possibly episodes in people with psychosis. I've even received the phrase, or phrases like it anonymously in my ask box before.
I think it should be treated like any other fear/paranoia-inducing meme. Try to only share it with people you know for a fact are okay with it. And if you really want to post it publicly the least you could do is tag it accordingly (use the tags I used on this post as an example). Just be cautious of how it's posted, just like any other heavy/triggering topic. It may seem harmless to people who aren't affected by it, but those of us who are affected by it have to deal with the consequences.
