Phoebe. Going along with the plan. Knowing that Silas is planning on sacrificing Priest. Listening to him explain the plan to everyone. Being fully prepared to sacrifice herself for her brother. Likely thinking that everyone else would think of her as an acceptable loss if they knew she was Priest. Knowing that whatever happens to her will be Silas’s fault. Thinking that she is fully expendable to him. Watching everyone else discuss and agree to the plan. Calling Rosalind saouzi when she probably doesn’t think she’ll live long enough to see Rosalind and Orion get officially married. Knowing that the plan will begin at 9 PM. Rosalind comparing her to a child playing dress up. The calendar stuck on the year 1927. Rosalind comparing her younger self to a child dressed up in glitter at the beginning of flf. Rosalind. Asking if Phoebe is upset by Silas’s continued fixation on Priest now that Orion is back. Rosalind. Saying that Silas is selfish for still focusing on catching Priest with Oliver in prison. When this entire time Silas has justified his obsession with Priest on the basis of getting Orion back. Rosalind. Telling Phoebe she has the right to be upset without knowing the full context of what is happening.

Nah because you know what really fucks me up? Even when Hamlet was in the depths of utter despair, he still had Horatio AND Ophelia. And, even if they weren’t on the best of terms, he also had his mom.
Laertes? Ophelia was already long gone, so no comfort there. He didn’t seem to have any friends in Elsinore, and well…his mom clearly isn’t in the picture.
Hamlet, even if what he was going through sucked, at least still had people who loved him and rooted for him to keep going. Laertes, from the time Ophelia dies, is utterly alone. Even before Hamlet stabs him with the poisoned sword, he was already a dead man walking.
Laertes is what would happen if Hamlet truly was as alone as he thought he was. A machine bent on revenge, forgetting the love where that vengeance stemmed from.

Every time I revisit chapter 86 and the events right after the group talks Marcille down, I'm always struck by this bit here:
Tumblr media
In particular, how similar it is to this:
Tumblr media
The Winged Lion ate the same desire in both of them, more or less (I'm sure there are some nuances in both flavor and intent, but they are clearly similar things here). The Lion basically used this technique to kill Thistle, and for Marcille it was... not insignificant, but something she and her friends overcame without even fully realizing it was an obstacle.
I feel like this is another small piece of the story that shows how important support and love are - in navigating mental illness, in dealing with abuse or addiction, or in working through any other similar struggle that can be read into the Lion and his eating of desires.
It almost feels like Marcille was able to borrow the desires of her friends. She loves them and she trusts them, so even when she didn't have a desire to free herself from the Lion, the care they had for her well being still mattered to her.
It's the same thing later, with her hair.
Tumblr media
She isn't able to notice the way her messy hair is making things harder, let alone do anything about it. But when Chilchuck points it out and then braids it back for her...
Tumblr media
It's better. She likes it, things are easier now. Even though it isn't a desire she can feel for herself, it's not something that doesn't effect her. And because her friends care - because they know her well enough to notice the difference - she is given the chance to have a preference and to ask for their help.
We can obviously see some parallel ideas here with Mithrun and Kabru as well, but I'd also like to point out that Thistle gets this grace, too. Thistle, who had no one to help him up once he lost his will to resist, or to encourage him to find new desires once the Lion ate them all.
Thistle says he doesn't need anything, anymore...
Tumblr media
But he is given an apology anyways.
Tumblr media
It is not a kindness he desires. It is not a kindness he is able to ask for.
But it is a kindness that helps. It is a kindness that matters.

not "i ship these characters" or "i want them to bond platonically" but a secret 3rd thing (I want them to be forced to interact by the Narrative bc they would HATE that)

there's something so incredibly gut wrenching about luke's "i know you didn't want to be a halfblood" mirroring percy's "i didn't want to be a halfblood" monologue because luke has always been a dark mirror of percy, what percy could become but never would because at the end of the day percy's fatal flaw means that no matter how disillusioned he became with the gods, he would never betray his friends like luke did. that is their fundamental and crucial difference.

anyway have any of you ever thought about how Jason was raised by wolves and then an army and told he had to be the best so he became the best, made himself the best using his experiences and power, who has to prove himself time and time again to the people who made him, and then he meets Percy Jackson who, with almost none of Jason’s training, without having been raised and molded into a leader, is better than him
Percy Jackson, who had a childhood, who had a mom, who seems all the better for it. Jason can finish his quests and missions and get a pat on the back and congratulations for bringing honor to the Legion and nothing else because that’s what’s expected of him, while Percy gets hugs and cookies and tears of relief and so much love because people had been hoping he’d succeed, not because it meant victory, but because it meant he'd live.
all of the things Jason’s gone through to make him that perfect leader and soldier feel like they were all for nothing because he looks at Percy Jackson and sees that perfect leader and soldier and none of the things that made Jason good are what made him great

An older piece I finally polished up and felt comfortable posting even though it's been sitting on my drive for a few months lmao.
Something something heart links. Cradled skeletal hands. Chains as wings, heaven and hell. Alt versions below from when I was testing colors:
