Cooking for the House of Lamentation
Let me start this post by saying that over the years I've had plenty of experience cooking for a lot of people. I'm no expert cook whatsoever, just a helping hand in the kitchen during festivals and occasions (which happens multiple times in a year). If you have more experience and insights, please feel free to share!
Let’s start this off by having some sort of baseline so we’re all on the same page.
MC /OC/you/us/we (and what have you) can:
follow a recipe well enough
be in the kitchen and not have it burn down
cook an edible meal at the end of it all
A fairly average cook if you will.
Now, time for chaos.
Cooking for a lot of people is…a lot. A feast for upwards of 10 people can take the whole day. Not to mention buying ingredients beforehand. How many dishes are you gonna cook? Do they go well/compliment each other? What’s the serving size? Are you gonna have desserts too? Do you have the right equipment? Are the ingredients available/accessible? Is there anyone who has a food-specific condition to look out for and make alternatives for? Are there ingredients that need to be marinated/prepped in advanced? Is everything within budget? (These are some questions at the top of my head)
Now the main concern here is volume/quantity. Beelzebub. Need I say more?
Actually, YES. It’s a house full of men. Men eat a lot. Oh, and they’re also demons. So let’s assume they eat/consume significantly more than humans. (You can pitch in your HCs for each brother regarding how much they eat) But let’s say the food has to be for 10-15 people at the very least.
GROCERY RUN!
There’s a whole ass booklet for the groceries, with each brother having their own page/section. Let’s assume there’s no budget constraints (Lucifer can bitch about the cost and budgeting but his brothers need to be fed). Groceries are bought in bulk. Multiple times a week. Emergency trips in the middle of the night or else they starve for breakfast. 
At some point they get their groceries delivered every 3 days or so. The runs are now for necessity/emergency.
But if a brother requests a certain dish, then it’s time to go to the market. Prepare your haggling skills.
THE BATTLEFIELD
Based off of the game (and referencing the floor plan from Wanderer’s Whereabouts), the kitchen is actually pretty spacious. Good. We need all the space we can get for this. I’d like to think Barbatos personally made sure the kitchen is fully kitted out with all the equipment and utensils one needs. (Thanks, Barbs. You’re the best!) No worries on that end.
I headcanon that the kitchen is split into 2 parts: the side where the stoves and appliances are and the side where the dirty kitchen is. That way you have access to stoves/ovens and the fancy appliances as well as being able to cook with coal or in a spit. Increases the capacity for cooking multiple dishes at once. (Please share your HCs for the kitchen!)
PREP TIME
Prepare your hands and arms. Washing, peeling, chopping, dicing, slicing, marinating. Any and every sort of ingredient prep. How many ingredients does this dish have? Are you gonna prep one dish only? Are you gonna prep for two in advance? Mis en place (or whatever the term is im no culinary shrimp)
Also think about the sheer amount of ingredients.
Say, according to the cookbook, this dish serves 5 people and it needs 1 whole onion. Pretty straight forward right? But you’re cooking for 7 demon brothers and one being the Avatar of Gluttony. Let’s go back to the 10-15 people approximation. That means you have to increase the amount (in this case that’ll be 2 or 3 whole onions). That goes for every fucking dish. 3 onions for dish #1. What about dish #2 and #3 and so on? (Honestly, your hands must be well marinated by the time you’re done with all the prep)
Measuring the ingredients too. 1 cup of this, a tablespoon of that, a pinch of this. Please please please let there be enough soy sauce for tonight’s cooking.
Another thing: you’re probably dealing with local Devildom ingredients (which you did not even know existed until then)
Veggies? Sliced
Meats? Washed and cut.
Condiments and seasonings? All measured.
Are we ready to cook? NO.
Please clean up the peels, excesses, undesirables, and packaging.
GET THE FIRE GOING
Finally! The actual cooking part! Take a deep breath and put that pot on the stove. Good luck cuz you’re gonna be juggling between multiple dishes just to be able to get ready for dinnertime.
One dish is boiling so the meat softens? Time to fry. Oh and have you checked the one you were marinating? Please add that to the veggies in dish #2. Don’t overcook the pasta for dish #1! Please adjust the heat, that pot is boiling over. Taste test for dish #3. Hhm needs more salt. Is the meat soft enough? Good, let's season it. Please mind the fire! You’re gonna char the one you’re frying. This one has marinated long enough, we can add it to dish #2. Take dish #1 off the heat. I think it’s done. Do you think this is fried well enough?
It’s hectic. It’s a mess and a half. You make sure nothing is overcooked or undercooked. Taste test to make sure everything tastes fine. (are the dishes safe for human consumption tho)
ALL DONE!(?)
You wish! Now you have to deal with the clean up!
Wash everything you used for cooking. Pots, pans, knives, measuring cups and spoons, plates and bowls you put the ingredients in, the tasting spoons you used, the ladles and spatulas, etc
Please clean the stoves, sinks, countertops/tabletops too.
Oh yea, put away the excess ingredients and return the condiments and seasonings.
You still there? Still got energy to study and do homework later?
Personally, i clean as i go whenever i have the time in between tending to the dishes. I hate hate hate a messy/dirty kitchen while i cook it makes me wanna rage
DINNERTIME
These fuckers better sit down and eat what you cooked. No. Who the fuck cares if someone is being rowdy or moody or being dramatic. NO ONE wastes your efforts in preparing the food. Sit down and EAT.
I mean alright, maybe you can tag team dinner prep but it’s still a lot in terms of quantity and sheer volume. Will that brother be of actual help in the kitchen?
To sum it all up,
May the Universe have mercy on MC when they’re on cooking duty.

Make a Week of Cheap, Easy, High-Protein Breakfasts in Less Than an Hour
If you’re looking to eat healthier, one of the best things you can do to make that happen is to make eating healthier easy. Like stupid easy. So easy, you hardly have to think about it. One way to accomplish this is to prepare your meals in advance so you know exactly what’s in them, and so that when you’re pressed for time, you don’t default to eating whatever unhealthy options are on hand or getting expensive, no-good-for-you fast food. When it’s time to eat, you just grab your ready-made meal from the fridge or freezer. You know, meal prep. One make-ahead meal I’ve been enjoying recently is a high-protein breakfast bake. I got the idea from a fella named Johnny Hadac on Instagram who serves up easy, affordable meal prep recipes for people looking to lose weight/eat better. This breakfast bake takes about 15 minutes to prep. The thing that takes the most time is dicing up your veggies. Bake time is about 35 minutes. When you’re done, you’ll have six tasty, high-protein, low-carb mini breakfast casseroles that will leave your belly feeling nice and full, but without a ton of calories.  Just take a look at the macro breakdown for each bake: * Protein: 50 grams * Carbs: 12 grams * Fat: 22 grams * Total Calories: 452 Cost per bake is $3.50. You’d pay about $13 for a similar breakfast bake from one of those companies that sell ready-to-eat meals online. I know, because I’ve bought them before. So these babies are tasty, healthy, and cost-effective. Here’s how to make them. Ingredients * 6 eggs * 24 ounces egg whites * 24 ounces low-fat cottage cheese * 12 ounces mild cheddar cheese * 6 precooked chicken sausages (you can buy them already cooked) * 1 onion * 3 bell peppers * Salt and pepper Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit Queue up the Art of Manliness Podcast Great to listen to while you’re prepping these. Dice Onion and Bell Peppers This is what will take most of your time. Lay Out Six Cooking Pans on a Table We’re going to prep these like they’re on a Henry Ford Model-T assembly line. I used these aluminum meal prep pans that you can buy at most grocery stores. I recommend doing the same when you first try this out. If you decide to make this a regular thing, you can buy some Pyrex pans. It will save you money, and you’ll be able to reheat your bake in the microwave right in the dish. Spray Each Pan With Cooking Spray Crack One Egg in Each Pan Add ½ Cup of Egg Whites to Each Pan Add ½ Cup of Low-Fat Cottage Cheese to Each Pan If cottage cheese makes you squeamish, don’t worry, you don’t taste it. But it gives the bake more protein and some bulk. Add 1 Diced Sausage to Each Pan I used Al Fresco Sweet Apple Chicken Sausages. Why? Because it was the only precooked chicken sausage available at my local Walmart Neighborhood Market. You could use whatever precooked meat you want to use: bacon, ham, ground beef, whatever. I used chicken sausage because it’s lower in fat and higher in protein. Add ¼ Cup of Mild Cheddar Cheese to Each Pan Add a Handful of Veggies to Each Pan Sprinkle With Salt and Pepper and Mix Ingredients Together You can also add other seasonings as desired, like Old Bay. You know I love me some Old Bay! Bake in the Oven for 35 Minutes Bam! A Week’s Worth of High-Protein Breakfasts If you baked them in the aluminum pans, just slide them onto a plate to reheat in the microwave. ~90 seconds should do the trick.  These actually taste really good cold.  I like to hit mine with some sort of hot sauce before consuming.  Enjoy! bestie i'm really stuck for money right now and need to think of inspiration, do you have any tips? I'm even considering starting an Only Fans hahaha
Hi lovely, i guess it depends on how stuck and what youve already got in place to get money. Like, I'm very wary of only fans and wpuld suggest trying literally everything else first just because its presented as an easy money maker with no consequences but really it isnt, its quite an exploitative platform, and I think it requires a lot of work and persistence to get any actual income from it.
What I will say, is get on reddit and r/eroticasells, you can make a bit of cash to tide you over by writing erotica for people, but again, u have to be careful, generally get the money before u give them any work u know. So that u arent scammed.
You can do that on fiverr too, but you have to be extremely careful about what you write in your advert because they suspend accounts at the drop of a hat and then u have to wait three months to withdraw your earnings. When I was on there I would withdraw my money the second it cleared. But i still got caught out by them and don't use them anymore. Its annoying though because fiverr was how i found the best clients who were willing to pay.
I don't know if u can do things like take on extra hours at your work (idk this feels like something you'd habe already thought of and lile super patronising to even suggest but idk) i ended up getting a second job and then a third job when i couldnt get good hours. It was kinda exhausting but i guess worth it in the end cause i got to keep my independence.
What i would say is,
Don't be tempted to use a credit card or any kind of loan, i know we're in a cost of living crisis so those loan compamies and credit card men will be out in force trying to prey on people who are short of cash. You can build up credit debt so quickly and its scary and stressful af so don't be tempted!!
I tried (and am going to try again) selling my old clothes on depop. That was a lot of effort too for my adhd ish brain but it could work for u.
Then like other little things like, my dad taught me some good budgeting skills over the years i guess.
But try to plan how much u spend a week on food/travel/everything.
So rn I'm getting worried about my money again and I'm trying to spend no more than £15 a week shopping, so I'll try to plan meals and stuff. If you don't cook from scratch its much cheaper to buy your ingredients for stuff like pasta all seperately ect.
This feels patronising or obvious again though tbh so if its something ur already doing then I'm sorry i couldnt be more helpful.
Times are really really tough and shitty right now an am sorry you're struggling bestie.

Advert Alchemy: The Timing

In this series, Squideo is breaking down the eight key ingredients to turn your advertising content into gold! In the last edition of Advert Alchemy, we examined the importance of music in creating the perfect marketing campaign. This week, we’re looking at the importance of timing. 
How long should your advert last and when should you hit your audience with unique selling points (USPs)? Timing is everything and hitting the right notes at the right time is the difference between your audience visiting your website or pressing mute. 
Time to Shine
The ideal length of your advertisement varies depending on three factors: 
01. Location, Location, Location
Adverts can be shown on multiple platforms, so either focus on one main platform or create multiple versions for maximum optimisation. An advert on Facebook should ideally be 60 seconds, 30 seconds for television, and up to 15 seconds for YouTube. 
02. Countdown 
Do your market research. How long is the average viewer going to watch an advert on the platform of your choice? How long is your target audience going to watch? Don’t make an advert your customers won’t want to watch or you might turn them off your brand altogether. 
03. Cash to Splash
If you’re planning to air an advert on television, remember that the longer your advert runs the more it will cost. The cost of your advert will also depend on the platform you want to broadcast it on, as different channels charge different hosting fees. 
Making Your Time Up
Let’s break down five adverts of different lengths and examine how they use timing to maximise their impact. 
01. Breaking Records
The longest television advert, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, lasted a whopping 14 hours! Shown exclusively in Brazil, it filled a gap between scheduled television much like teleshopping does on British satellite channels. Creating this was no small feat, with production and editing lasting months. 
The brand which produced this gargantuan advert is one you’ll definitely have heard of: Old Spice. Their advertising campaign, created by Procter & Gamble, has been so successful that it led to a 60% increase in sales of Old Spice products after the first advert aired when the initial increase target had only been 15%.

The Old Spice adverts have been so successful, their campaign has run for over 10 years. It’s accomplishments are down to its fast humour, excellent audience targeting and fantastic casting. From the offset, Old Spice adverts start selling, packing a perfect punch into its longest and shortest ads. 
02. Blink and You’ll Miss It
On the other end of the spectrum are adverts so short it’s entirely possible to miss them: blipverts. 
What’s the point of that you ask? In a world of fast-forwarding, ad-blocking and skip buttons, getting to the point quickly is an artform that’s worth mastering. 
The shortest Superbowl advert to ever run was half a second long. Viewers caught sight of a logo and heard the name. Curiosity was piqued. The Seattle restaurant Ivar’s is known locally for its eccentric advertising campaign, but this stunt took the brand to a new level of national infamy. 
But the record holder for the shortest ever advert goes even further. The adverts for MuchMusic last 1/60th of a second, appearing on screen as a flash of an image. These would be run concurrently during advertisement breaks to ensure viewers took notice.

03. Epic Odyssey
After hearing about an advert 14 hours long, something 90 seconds or over seems fairly tame. But compared to the average length, this is considered quite the investment. It’s rare for adverts to last longer than 30 seconds, so having something running for 90 seconds plus is certainly attention grabbing. 
These long-form adverts can also be shortened into multiple segments making them very adaptable. On British TV, these long adverts are typically infomercials (think JML) or Christmas placements (John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Aldi etc.). 
Warburton’s is a British companies that frequently likes to break the 30 second average. Whether it’s Robert de Nero creating a bagel empire, Peter Kay romancing the wholegrain, or The Muppets singing about crumpets, each advert is worthy of the time it takes and proudly showcases the product.

04. Running on Standard
Most adverts last between 15 and 30 seconds. An interesting way to shake up this average, however, is to create a series of adverts that run on from each other. This gives viewers an incentive to keep watching, which helps reinforce your brand in their memory, without paying for a longer advert which could lose the attention of an audience. The adverts can then be spliced together to create a longer advert to show on YouTube or your website. 
Take a look at this compilation of John Smiths adverts. The brewery used the same group of actors throughout the series of adverts – including the well-known comedian Peter Kay. The plot often ran on from the same location, e.g., a wedding, a restaurant.

They became so popular with viewers that, when the advert series ended in 2005, there was a public campaign calling for its return. 
05. Topsy Turvy
You can also run what is a called a top and tail advert. These are two adverts in the same television break of 15 seconds each, giving a total length of 30 seconds. These adverts are usually run by show sponsors. 
John Lewis, for example, sponsors Channel 4, specifically their home related content (Homes on 4) like Grand Designs or A Place in the Sun. Their adverts are created to run before and after each commercial break, which is why they decided to use this advert style.

Everyone loves a good Greek Saganaki and there are so many varieties to create easily at home.
This time, similar to my Okra Saganaki recipe, I made it using green peppers.
They are placed in an oven dish, bathed in a lush tomato sauce and plenty of feta cheese and then baked slowly in the oven which does all the work.
A super easy, low cost recipe to create during early Summer and Autumn months when green peppers are tender and fragrant.
Suitable for lacto-vegetarians.
 
INGREDIENTS:
400 gr. / 14 oz Small Green Peppers, whole, sweet or mildly spicy, washed  (e.g: Spanish Padrón, Herbón or shishito)
150-200 gr. / 5.5-7 oz Greek Feta Cheese
200 gr. / 7 oz Mini Grape Tomatoes, washed
400 gr. / 14 oz Crushed tomatoes, canned
2 Garlic cloves, minced
3 tbsp. / 45 ml Olive oil
15 ml / 1 tbsp. red wine Vinegar
1 tsp. dry Thyme
To garnish: 2 tbsp. fresh Parsley, finely chopped
Ground black Pepper -NO SALT-feta is salty enough!!

METHOD:
A.    Make the Saganaki: 1. Spray or brush some oil on an oven Pyrex dish of 23 x 35 cm / 9 x 14 in.
2. Spread the washed, whole green peppers in the dish.

3. Scatter the grape tomatoes around the peppers.
4. Pour the crushed tomatoes sauce on top of all the vegetables, followed by the olive oil and vinegar.
5. Sprinkle the dry thyme on top, rubbed between your palms to release its aromas.
6. Season with ground black pepper (only). Add also the minced garlic.

7. Using a large spoon or your gloved hands, mix all ingredients very well.
8. Crumble the feta cheese with your hands and spread it on top of the peppers.
9. The dish is now ready for some slow baking. Wasn't that simple!?

B.    Baking instructions: 10. Place the oven dish with Saganaki in a preheated oven, both heating elements on @180℃ / 350℉, and bake for about 1 hour - 70'.
11. TIP: Use heating elements (NOT FAN) to prevent peppers from drying out!
12. After about 30', open the oven and gently flip the peppers. Return in the oven for another 30'-40' of baking (depends on the oven).
13. When ready, remove dish from the oven.
14. Just before serving, sprinkle the chopped parsley on top of the dish.
 
C. Serving suggestion:
Serve Peppers Saganaki as the centerpiece of your family dinner.

I served this dish with Kalamata Olives and brown bread, to sop up the rich tomato sauce with melted feta.

The tomato sauce has permeated the peppers beautifully, which have remained whole through cooking and are now tender, sweet and tangy from the feta.
What a great combo and so appetizing! Enjoy this dish! Because you know what they say: "Everything is betta with Feta"!!

If you have leftovers, store them after they cool down, in an airtight container, in the fridge for 1 week.

Όλοι αγαπούν ένα καλό σαγανάκι και υπάρχουν τόσες πολλές παραλλαγές για να το φτιάξετε εύκολα στο σπίτι.
Αυτή τη φορά, παρόμοια με τη συνταγή μου για μπάμιες σαγανάκι, το έφτιαξα χρησιμοποιώντας πράσινες πιπεριές.
Τις βάζουμε σε ταψί φούρνου, τις περιλούζουμε με μια πλούσια σάλτσα ντομάτας και μπόλικη φέτα και μετά ψήνονται σιγά σιγά στο φούρνο που κάνει όλη τη δουλειά.
Μια εξαιρετικά εύκολη, χαμηλού κόστους συνταγή για να φτιάξετε στις αρχές του καλοκαιριού και του φθινοπώρου, όταν οι πράσινες πιπεριές είναι ακόμα τρυφερές και μυρωδάτες.
Κατάλληλο για χορτοφάγους.
 
ΥΛΙΚΑ:
• 400 γρ. / 14 oz μικρές πράσινες Πιπεριές κέρατο, ολόκληρες, γλυκές ή ελαφρώς καυτερές, πλυμένες (π.χ.: ισπανικές Padrón, Herbón ή shishito)
• 150-200 γρ. / 5,5-7 oz Φέτα
• 200 γρ. / 7 oz Ντοματίνια μακρόστενα, πλυμένα
• 400 γρ. / 14 oz Ντοματάκια ψιλοκομμένα, κονσέρβας
• 2 σκελίδες Σκόρδο, λιωμένες
• 3 κ.σ. / 45 ml Ελαιόλαδο
• 15 ml / 1 κ.σ. Ξύδι από κόκκινο κρασί
• 1 κ.γ. ξερό Θυμάρι
• Για γαρνίρισμα: 2 κ.σ. φρέσκος Μαϊντανός, ψιλοκομμένος
• Μαύρο πιπέρι τριμμένο -ΟΧΙ ΑΛΑΤΙ-η φέτα είναι αρκετά αλμυρή!!

ΜΕΘΟΔΟΣ:
Α. Φτιάξτε το Σαγανάκι:
1. Ψεκάστε ή αλείψτε λίγο λάδι σε ένα ταψί Πυρέξ φούρνου 23 x 35 εκ. / 9 x 14 in.
2. Απλώστε στο ταψί τις πλυμένες, ολόκληρες πράσινες πιπεριές.

3. Σκορπίστε τα ντοματίνια γύρω γύρω στις πιπεριές.
4. Περιχύστε τη σάλτσα ντομάτα πάνω από όλα τα λαχανικά, ακολουθούμενη από το ελαιόλαδο και το ξύδι.
5. Πασπαλίστε από πάνω το ξερό θυμάρι, τριμμένο ανάμεσα στις παλάμες σας για να απελευθερωθούν τα αρώματά του.
6. Καρυκέψτε με μαύρο πιπέρι (μόνο). Προσθέστε επίσης το λιωμένο σκόρδο.

7. Χρησιμοποιώντας ένα μεγάλο κουτάλι ή τα χέρια σας, με γάντια, ανακατέψτε πολύ καλά όλα τα υλικά.
8. Θρυμματίστε με τα χέρια τη φέτα και απλώστε τη πάνω από τις πιπεριές.
9. Το φαγητό είναι τώρα έτοιμο για αργό ψήσιμο. Μα δεν ήταν απλό!;

Β. Οδηγίες ψησίματος:
10 Τοποθετήστε το ταψί με το Σαγανάκι σε προθερμασμένο φούρνο, στις πάνω και κάτω αντιστάσεις στους @180℃ / 350℉, και ψήστε για περίπου 1 ώρα - 70'.
11. ΣΥΜΒΟΥΛΗ: Χρησιμοποιήστε τις αντιστάσεις (ΟΧΙ ΤΟΝ ΑΕΡΑ) για να μην ξεραθούν και στεγνώσουν οι πιπεριές!
12. Μετά από περίπου 30' ανοίξτε το φούρνο και αναποδογυρίστε απαλά τις πιπεριές. Επιστρέψτε στο φούρνο για άλλα 30'-40' ψήσιμο (εξαρτάται από το φούρνο).
13. Μόλις είναι έτοιμο το φαγητό, αφαιρέστε το από το φούρνο.

I hate articles that claim they're full of tips about saving money and then you look and it's things like "cook from scratch", "buy in bulk", "don't let food go out of date", "start a veggie garden", "reuse boxes and jars but also don't let things get cluttered", and of course the "make coffee at home"
Like jesus fucking Christ there's literally a dozen reasons why people can't do these things. Especially the "start a garden" like 1 - not everyone can physically do that and 2 - do you know how much tome and effort gardens need????
For example:
I'm mentally ill, so the process of: choosing what I want to eat that week, writing down ALL of the ingredients I need, going to the store & buying Everything I don't already have, coming home & putting them away, & then remembering to cook them all, takes up just so much energy and emotional bandwidth that i can't do it. I use dinnerly which is expensive but it literally cuts out the shopping part. I choose the recipes I want out of a selection so it's not "every recipe in the entire world" it's "pick 3 out of these 50 but since you're such a picky eater it's actually like 15 options".
Then my only other problem is that if I'm working, I won't be able to cook cuz I can either work or cook and not both (tho thankfully I only work part time and I share dinnerly with someone else who can also cook)
I know a few people are gonna think I'm making a big deal about nothing but I know a lot of disabled people who are like "yea it costs more when you're disabled" and these "money saving tricks" seem to forget that disabled people exist. I mean even people just working more than 1 job probably struggle with this.

How cultured meat went from hype to climate problem

Meat grown in labs has long been the hip pet child of investors. But insiders now admit how 'their plastic waste mountain grew faster than their meat'.
Is it 'cell-based meat', 'cultured meat', 'animal-free meat' or 'lab meat'? In Singapore, the first country in the world to allow the sale of artificial meat, scientists have already investigated which term convinces consumers best. Cultured meat is number one, 'cell-based meat' actually makes them drop out.
Yet that is the most precise description: lab meat is created by multiplying animal cells in heated tanks on a mixture of sugar, yeasts, growth hormones or other patented ingredients.
Ever since a Dutch researcher proposed the first artificial hamburger in 2013[1], investors have been captivated by laboratory meat. Theoretically, it could put an end to animal suffering on a large scale. At least $2.8 billion is said to be involved in the sector, mostly venture capital that hungry start-ups are competing for. Because lab meat remains extremely expensive, making it more of a promise of the future than a tangible product.
Yet after the hype, disillusionment grows. Especially now that some employees of the American Upside Foods[2] have come clean to technology magazine Wired. Upside Foods is one of the rare companies that doesn't mimic the structure of processed meat, but that of a fresh chicken fillet – which is more complex. According to employees, the company misled the public about the process. The large steel 'bioreactors' that Upside Foods[3] liked to show to journalists did not work well enough. “We often had to throw away the meat because the tanks became contaminated,” says a former employee who managed the process between November 2021 and the summer of 2022. “Then we had to burn the proceeds.”
Single-use plastic
And so Upside Foods had to switch gears: it started manually creating tiny layers of meat in small disposable plastic bottles. This is a problem in a sector that is faced with the task of scaling up production and making it cheaper. “We had lab technicians apply procine gelatine to the inside of bottles. They’d later fill the bottles with a small amount of chicken cells and add growth media—a rich broth of hormones, sugars, and other nutrients” says a source. After a week of simmering in the heat, layers of approximately 2 grams were removed from the bottles with a spatula and stuck together to form a fillet.
“You can imagine how much plastic waste we generated,” a concerned former employee told Wired. According to the news site, Upside’s current production method likely produces plastic waste more than 10 times faster than it makes meat. The final product cost “thousands of dollars in labour,” according to employees. For the time being, those fillets were only available in a very exclusive restaurant in California.
Upside Foods has more or less confirmed the findings. “We are in a development phase,” it sounds. “Not every research avenue, cultivator, or idea we explore will materialise exactly as we expected.”
Peace of Meat
The Government of Flanders can confirm this. In 2019, it provided approximately 702,000 euros in subsidies for the start-up of venture entrepreneur Dirk Standaert. His company, Peace of Meat, pledged to make cultured meat on an industrial scale. “The same juicy meat you love; a whole different story for the planet and the animals,” was the slogan[4]. At the end of 2020, Standaert sold Peace of Meat to an Israeli sector colleague for 15 million.
The ambition then was to become the European market leader. Problem: lab meat was and is not yet approved for human consumption anywhere in the European Union. Only the Netherlands has allowed the first experimental test rounds for a few days now. Moreover, the Israeli investor discovered that the volumes promised by Peace of Meat would not be achieved for years. The Israelis pulled the plug. In April, the Antwerp court declared Peace of Meat bankrupt[5], stating that the company's main activity was 'advertising and market research'. Last month it turned out that there is no buyer for the lab materials. None of those involved wished to respond to questions.
The Israeli investor is now trying to breed 'laboratory fish' with new backers from the Middle East. That would be a little easier, because 'artificial fish' grows at lower temperatures. [6] It also contains less of the difficult-to-reproduce fatty tissue.
Wishful thinking
“With rising interest rates and a war in Ukraine, the investment climate is no longer the same as five years ago,” Meatable, a Dutch producer of lab meat, told De Standaard.[7] Meatable just raised 30 million euros, half of which came from the Dutch government. Yet they also feel that promises alone are no longer enough. 'When we started in 2018, no one had anything concrete yet. Now you have to be able to show an effective product.” Meatable claims that it can grow pig cells into sausages in eight days, and is now moving to Singapore. “First we want to make it happen in that market, then in the US, and then hopefully in Europe. We need to build up experience before we can submit our file to the European food safety watchdog EFSA.”
Scientists now warn that lab meat cannot replace all 'real' meat. “Every scientific, truly independent study indicates that we cannot scale this up at a reasonable price,” Ricardo San Martin (Alt:Meat Lab, University of California[8]) told the BBC this summer. 'There is a lot of wishful thinking in the sector. If there is not more openness soon, I see the financial flows drying up.'
Higher CO₂ emissions
Because the positive climate impact of cultured meat is not as clear as the companies claim. “Because the growth media for lab meat must be purified to an almost pharmaceutical level, you use more energy,” says researcher Derrick Risner (University of California) in a new paper. "In the short term, emissions appear lower than those of a livestock herd, but depending on the energy sources, cultured meat can cause more emissions in the long term, which also accumulate and linger longer," researchers calculated in the scientific journal Frontiers of Sustainable Food Systems in 2019[9]. Some estimate that cultured meat can emit four to 25 times more CO₂ than 'normal' beef. The companies reject those results. But since they protect their exact production process because it is a 'trade secret', there is a lot of uncertainty.
The United Nations food organisation also recently asked for 'more data and transparency' in order to assess possible dangers to the food chain. Unless the laboratory process takes place in perfectly sterile conditions, cultured meat quickly becomes contaminated with bacteria. The waste from the bioreactors should therefore not simply end up in the environment. This hygiene obviously comes at an additional cost.
Finally, more and more activists find lab meat problematic, because it strengthens the agro-industry's hold on our diet. Companies such as Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill, Nestlé, Maple Leaf Foods invest in cultured meat and plant-based burgers, but are known for unsustainable agricultural practices and monoculture. “Cultured meat only perpetuates that system of industrial, ultra-processed food production,” says the NGO Food and Water Watch[10]. 'Getting people to eat more lentils and beans also pushes back meat production, but there are no big corporate profits to be made there.' Navdanya International, an NGO that advocates a more ecological and less profit-driven agriculture, therefore called lab meat a 'false solution'. "A livestock fulfils more functions than just producing meat," microbiologist Eric Muraille (ULB) also agrees on The Conversation[11]. Paula Calvert: A Gutsy Lady with a Challenge for Her Community

They drive. They stop. They deliver and they interact. They drive again. They stop again. Three hundred and fifty times a day. That’s the job description for the folks who deliver the daily food for the Meals on Wheels program orchestrate five days per week by the Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley. The non-profit may operate 15 other services, but the meal distribution is by far the most labor intensive. The argument can be made, too, that the weekday lunches represent the most important activity that Paula Calvert manages as Family Service CEO. Sure, there’s transportation, wellness, informational seminars, and hygiene assistance, but Meals on Wheels likely delivers the only sustenance – and human interaction – the majority of clients have access to on a daily basis. How’d ya like to wake up to that responsibility?  Well, that’s exactly what Calvert has done for years, why she’s always battled for attention every chance she’s had, and why she’s enthralled that Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley was selected as the benefitting organization by the directors of the annual Mountaineer Brewfest. Last year, the Seeing Hand Association received $40,000 from the festival. What if that’s the amount offered to Family Services this year?  Just so happens that’s how much those meals on wheels cost … each month. Calvert cherishes her family, including her husband Grove, and son Grove, Jr. What is the message you hear most from those seniors you help on a daily basis? The messages we receive from the seniors are bittersweet. When you read a message that states they love your meals and this is the best they have eaten in several years, it hits you hard. When additional funding is available, we send water and beverage boxes to reduce dehydration.  The hand-written notes about the struggle to carry heavy grocery bags put your abilities in perceptive and confirm that the services we provide are essential.  My favorite notes are about the kindness of my staff, and I love when the seniors share recipes with the drivers. The social interaction is incredible.   Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley reduces the struggle of cooking a variety of healthy meals for a one or two-person household.   Have I told you that I love my job?    Are you a beer drinker? I do enjoy a cold glass of beer.  I’m excited that Family Services is the recipient of the Mountaineer Brewfest and I’m looking forward to talking to the participants.  I’m eager to learn the differences in the process and ingredients. One thing I do know is that a beer with family and friends is my favorite.   I have several fond memories of vacationing with friends enjoying food, beverages, and laughter. Those are moments that I cherish. This summer I have a goal of creating more memories with those l the love the most.   I also believe that a cold beer and a hot dog taste better at a ballpark. I love the game of baseball and watching the game at a ballpark is amazing. A close second would be a football. The Christmas season is Calvert's favorite time of the year, and her family and friends certainly know that fact. What is most difficult when it comes to operating a non-profit organization the Wheeling area? It is difficult to operate a non-profit in Wheeling because of the unnecessary “noise” of some of the population. The mission of every non-profit is clear, but the misinformation that is communicated is exhausting.  As I stated many times during radio shows—if you have a nonprofit that serves you – make sure you support that nonprofit.   Nonprofit leaders must fight the perception that whatever you need can be provided by applying for a grant.  That is not always the case.   Wheeling is filled with amazing seniors that Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley serves daily.  I’m encouraging Ohio County seniors to join the fun at our center!   When scanning TV stations, what movies or shows do you always stop on to watch – even for a short bit? I love Christmas movies and comedies!  My husband and son always are making fun of my love of Hallmark Christmas movies, and they enjoy the scary movies (I can’t even listen to the scary music … lol). I love a heartwarming movie that I have seen a thousand times.   The season of Christmas with family, lights, and gatherings is what I LOVE!  I also like comedies especially if there is a movie marathon that plays all day. Family time - including future daughter-in-law Paige Howard - is most important to Calvert, but her Family Service clients are always on her mind. What happens to the people served by Family Services if the organization suddenly goes away? I do not want to think about that day.  If Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley suddenly goes away, seniors in Ohio and Marshall counties will go without food, and my dedicated Meals on Wheels delivery drivers are sometimes the only human contact for our clients. Without Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley seniors would not have reliable transportation to their doctor’s appointments, financial appointments, visiting spouses in the hospital, or wellness activities. The programs we offer at our organization provides information and reduces isolation. Education and information are necessary to remain connected to your the community, reduce the threat of being scammed, and to live the best chapter of your life on your terms.   I have an amazing staff that goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of our seniors. We are always looking for more dedicated employees. I’m challenging the leaders of the community to learn more about Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley. Yes, we are always looking for donations, but we also need strong advocates for positive change for the senior population.   My challenge is to call me at 304-233-2350 x 105 and schedule a tour of our organization. How do you make strawberry syrup?
Strawberry syrup is a versatile and delicious addition to any kitchen. Whether you want to use it to top pancakes, waffles, or ice cream, or to add a fruity twist to cocktails or mocktails, strawberry syrup is a must-have in your pantry. And the good news is, making your own strawberry syrup at home is easy and fun! Here's how to do it:
Ingredients:
- 1 pound fresh strawberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
1. Rinse the strawberries and remove the green tops. Cut them into small pieces.
2. In a medium saucepan, combine the strawberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, and salt.
3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the strawberries are very soft and the liquid has thickened.

Week 1: Lost in Prague
We made it! Our plane ride here was smooth sailing.

At first, I was stressed about going through customs in Amsterdam since it was my first time crossing an international border without my parents. However, everyone was super helpful and we got through within 15 minutes, in time to catch out next plane with only a one-hour layover! Also, being that it was an international flight, it felt a lot more luxurious than a flight from New York to California. They were consistently feeding us (more than 4 meals in total within 8 hours) so I left happy and with a food baby :)
Seeing my flat (apartment) for the first time with all my roommates was a surreal feeling. Till this point, the idea of studying abroad hasn’t hit me yet. For the next three months, I’ll be living in a 4 bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with 3 other roommates. Compared to my Ann Arbor apartment, this room is luxurious. I no longer have to dangle my feet off of my twin-sized bed and have room to walk.

For the entirety of our first day, we were riding on a high. Any direction we looked was a sight to be been. I’m used to meaningless New York City skyscrapers, therefore, such beautifully crafted and historically rich buildings are definitely a breath of fresh air.

Prague is also a super convenient city. Not only is it super walkable (and unfortunately hilly) but the public transportation is also extremely well designed. It spans the entirety of the city and its 3-month pass costs half of what I used to spend on MTA in a week. Our 3-month pass was around $65 USD and this would give us access to almost all public transportation in Prague. 
As we settled in though, I began to realize the cultural barriers that soon became a little frustrating. It started with little things, such as not having clothing dryers or learning the currency exchange instinctually. Then, when I went to the supermarket, I became more frustrated when none of the labels were legible to me. This was never something I experienced before. Being a food snob, I was accustomed to reading every label and ingredient list before purchasing. Now, either I pull out Google translate or had to trust my instincts. 
Climbing is something that always feels close to home so, of course, I had to bring it to Prague. I got a few of my friends to join me at BigWall in Prague 9 for a climbing session this past week. The climbs here are significantly harder than the ones I climb back at home which is a blessing in disguise. This gives me an opportunity to focus on techniques that aren’t my forte and would normally just skip past for other more fun climbs.
