what even was today
i was woken up by a donut being handed to me. hell yeah. i got up and actually sat down at my computer for a hot minute to take my meds and start on my thermo homework, which i actually did a little bit of. which was nice. less stressful than matlab. it's just math.
got up, showered, went to joel's for today's d&d game, during which we decided as a party to buy ourselves a house. that's what we did. we went real estate shopping. i fucking love d&d.
joel got home while we were playing, and eventually re-emerged from the other room after we were all done and as we were just chatting.
lisa made steak for dinner and casey left, and daniel and i were just sitting for a while and joel came over and he and john joined in the conversation and it was nice.
during said conversation, joel and i told them that we'll be adopting kids at some point, because we both want to. joel poked me and said i just needed to not be broke all the time. which, yknow, fair. but that made me really happy.
daniel and i left around 10:30 or so, him heading directly home and me heading to dq for some ice cream which is making my tummy angy now and then stopping for gas, and i realized as i was driving that us adopting meant that my parents will actually get to have grandkids. sure they won't be biological, unless we do IVF, but my hormones are already fuckin wack without another human growing inside me. so adoption. and it's not like it's a second choose either - i've always wanted to adopt, for as long as i've wanted to be a parent, and at every point when i've wanted to be a parent. i just want to give some tiny humans a good home with loving and supportive parents and family members. i also anticipate that any adoption agencies we go through would want us to be married or something before we adopt, so if that happens too, then like. bada bing bada boom. everything my mormon-raised traumatized ass could ever want: a family i can help be better by taking care of them and providing for their needs and wants as much as humanly possible. i'm just. i wanna take care of people. but i also don't know if i'll have that kind of time as a scientist. but i'll make that time, and i'll teach my kids to pursue what they love, and i'll support them in everything they want to try. we'll have their backs every step of the way. and that part, the "we" there? that's my favorite part of all.

today at work i learned from a coworker that, during my interview, i had solved my supervisor’s programming test shockingly quickly. i’m not sure what to do with that information. in my head i’d been panicking and sweating, and feeling sharp and dizzy, and i thought i was freezing up and going awkwardly slowly. but apparently it was fast enough and mistake-less enough that not only did it impress them, they also talked about it with other employees?
anyway today i started learning how to program in git. it’s really similar to iraf, which i used in my astronomy program in undergrad, so i actually just kind of... picked it up right away. i’m nervous that i’m going through the training packet too fast... i don’t want to jack up their expectations by looking like some kind of genius right off the bat. maybe i’m underselling myself, but i genuinely don’t remember a lot of this stuff until something reminds me. a huge chunk of my skill set sits behind a wall like that. they asked me to solve a matlab program in my interview and i genuinely thought i had forgotten everything and was just working off general things i knew about computers. i didn’t remember the syntax at all, i know that for sure.
i kept an eye on my coworkers to see what kinds of breaks they were taking. the guy at the desk next to me had his phone out and was scrolling through facebook while he programmed on his work computer so i felt a million times better about dicking around on discord while i waited for things to load, or waited for my boss to get back to give me my next task.
afterward i hoofed it over to creative writing club. i left a little early, i cut into my lunch break to make sure i was still putting in 8 hours. gotta be on my best behavior until i’m done with training, and then i can see about relaxing with the “exactly 8 hours” thing. i need the money anyway, a hundred dollars a day is super helpful but only doing it for 5 days isn’t going to cover everything i need to pay by the end of the month.
going to bed at 10 is miserable though. i’ve barely slept the last two days.
anyway, writing club! i gave some feedback on another story, and worked on the comic i’m going to stream tomorrow, and chatted with the other club members about the steven universe movie afterward. it looks like all of us have a lot of ongoing projects that will need feedback in stages this semester, so it looks like the three leaders aren’t going to bother with the collaborative world this semester. we’ve all got too many other things to bring to the table haha. cristian wants me to show some of my comic next week though. i might pick the halloween story, people seem to really like that one and i am the happiest with it i think. and it’s the easiest to establish context for and still mostly get the emotions across. if i read out the fishing story, it wouldn’t have the same effect at all if you didn’t already care about the characters.
it’s nice to not have homework but god 10-6 is NOT my ideal sleeping period. my body handles 11:30-7:30 so much better. i kind of hate it. i’m a little too tired to work on the comic tonight, but i did work on a comic at club, and i also went to club haha so i was out of the house for nearly 12 entire hours. i could pull up my job training and keep going but i keep reminding myself “like hell they’re not paying me to learn git! you HAVE to only do that during business hours.” haha. we’ll see how much energy i have tomorrow. i’ve got to run my regular errands and stream and stuff. i’m already dragging my feet and it’s only 9:45 though. at least the bike ride to and from the office has been helpful... the exercise is so much better than riding the bus or anything like that.

Paperless Student? An Update
One of my all-time most popular posts was about being a paperless student. In this post, I'll be providing an update on my current paper use as a student now that I am back in in-person classes. It is also an update on the post I wrote last fall on the apps I use in remote college. I still try to be as paperless as possible, but unfortunately, some of my professors print stuff out for us or require us to turn in hard copies. The core products continue to be Microsoft OneNote for notes, Google Drive for files, Microsoft Lens for scanning, and PDF Expert for reading and annotating PDFs. A web application and Chrome extension that I have recently discovered is Speechify which converts text-to-speech. This post is broken into sections for each of my courses. For the full list of my current courses, click here. In a future post, I’ll update you all on my current time and task management systems as there have been some significant changes.
CSC 220
All of our assignments are completed digitally as this is a web programming class. I have been writing code in Visual Studio Code and have been using MAMP as my local webserver. My file transfer protocol (FTP) client is Cyberduck. As for notetaking, I type up my tutorial and lecture notes in OneNote. Rather than use a textbook, we’ve been completing lots of tutorials on a website called W3Schools.
CSC 223
Our readings and other assignments for this class have been digital so far, but we may end up sketching a few things on paper. We are learning Ruby on Rails and had to install a bunch of software to get everything up and running. The terminal I use is a Linux distribution called Ubuntu. (I also occasionally use this for CSC 220). My text editor of choice is Sublime Text. We also make use of GitHub. During class, I take handwritten notes on my iPad (in OneNote of course). My reading notes are typed up in OneNote and my reading reflections are typed up in Google Docs.
EGR 320
This class is why I can no longer claim to be a paperless student. We get hard copies of all the slide decks and worksheets and must turn in hard copies of our homework on engineering paper. We even need to print out our MATLAB code and figures. I do actually use the paper handouts, but also take some handwritten notes on my iPad while watching the pre-class videos. As for textbook notes, I type them up. Upon getting my homework turned back, I scan the pages (using Microsoft Lens) and upload them to my Google Drive. One nice thing about this class and its paper use is that the professor provided us with a nice binder and dividers to use. For now, I am using my own 1-inch binder, but I’ll probably have to transfer things to the class issue 1.5-inch binder soon as I’m running out of space. We were also given physical textbooks to use for the semester, but I prefer to read the PDF version on my iPad.
EGR 390dc
Like EGR 320, homework must be complete on engineering paper. Fortunately, I don’t need to turn in a hard copy and can simply scan my homework and then upload it to Moodle (and Google Drive for safekeeping). For lab work, we use the Arduino IDE and Spyder (installed via Anaconda) which is a Python IDE. In order to program the Arduinos with Python code, we use a library called pySerial. I do my actual lab write-ups in Google Docs. Fortunately, we were provided with a PDF textbook that I read on my iPad. Just last class we started getting paper handouts in class, but I opted to continue taking handwritten notes on my iPad. I did have to frequently add screenshots from the lecture slides as there were circuit diagrams that would have taken too long to draw neatly. Like most of my other classes, my textbook notes are typed.
ENX 100
For this class, I read and annotate the readings on my iPad in the PDF Expert app. (I first download the files from Moodle and then upload them to GoogleDrive). As for my response papers, I write them up in Google Docs. During our first lecture, I typed up a few notes in OneNote. Since we’ve only met twice, I am still figuring out my systems for this class.
ESS 945sp
In this class, my journal and weekly papers are typed up in Google Docs. My Fitbit (and the corresponding app) have also been helpful digital tools for tracking my workouts.
ITL 205
Just like in ENX 100, I read and annotate the PDF readings in PDF Expert. Our quizzes are on paper, but we don’t get them back so it doesn’t bother me. So far, I haven’t been taking notes as I prefer to engage fully with the lecture and don’t need to remember super specific and obscure facts to be successful. I have been bringing a paper notebook just in case because the professor really doesn’t want people on electronic devices.

Where do I begin? Well, first off last semester kicked my ass. I failed two classes, got two C’s, and a B+. I wanted to mention this because I feel like a lot of people in this community don’t talk about the bad semesters that they have had. They only talk about the good. But sometimes shit happens, and that is okay. It’s okay to fail, but it is not okay to give up.
There were many problems, one of the big ones being that the one of the classes that I got an F in was a time sink. The teacher didn’t like me and he made my life hell.
So many things went wrong...like EVERYTHING ALL OF THE TIME.
But I am going to change how I do things this semester.
1) I am going to make sure that I understand the concepts that were covered THAT week. This seems like such a simple thing, but it is something that I have never done before, I normally put it off or realize that I don’t know something right before the exam. To ensure this I plan on meeting with the professor every week and review my notes frequently.
2) I will start the homework the day that it is assigned. Another simple thing that I tend to over look.
3) Study groups from the very beginning
4) Eat, sleep, exercise! During one of the exams I actually fell asleep. I have no idea how much time I lost. I didn’t eat before my exams so I wasn’t able to concentrate. I did exercise some, but I need more! This helps my brain take a break, but it also helps it process information.
5) Track my time. I need to know where I am investing my time and how much I am time I am giving certain tasks.
I think that this is a pretty good list. Oh yeah, my classes.I am taking comprehensive physics II+lab, orbital mechanics+lab, grown up linear algebra, and oil painting. I need to talk to a professor and see if I can get into the matlab course, (light load). I hope that everyone has a great semester, don’t be like me! Good luck!

Make Your MATLAB Homework Answers Look More Professional
Ever heard of the phrase “First impression matters?” Well, this is true, the first picture created in one's mind within the very first second upon seeing your work, dictates his/her attitude towards your work all through. Writing excellent quality MATLAB homework answers is essential to score that A+ grade, and so is formatting.
Having an appealing assignment; which is from proper formatting, can impress your professor, and make him/her want to read more of your work, with a positive view. Did you know that 50% of impressions are purely based on the visuals? When faced with the question “How can I do my MATLAB assignment,” you need to take into consideration a few keynotes, to have an attractive paper.
Why is having an attractive paper that stands out from all the rest this important? For instance, if your class has got seventy students, that means that your professor has to go through seventy dull papers, all written in the same format. It is so human that eventually, he will get bored. To lighten him/her up once he first takes a look at your MATLAB homework answers, consider incorporating the following.
1. Other Than The Default Font, Use A Contrasting Font Style
Times New Romans is considered as the default font. However, you are still open to use different presentable writing fonts such as Calibri body, Arial, Manjari, Abyssinicia SIL, etc. If you happen to choose a particular font, ensure you use it consistently throughout your assignment. This will give your professor a break from all the Times New Romans written papers.
Take care of the following as well;
- Heading Size: 14
- Sub-Heading Size: 13
- Paragraphs Sentences Size: 12
2. Be Keen On The Color
According to our MATLAB assignment experts, using the proper coloring on your assignments enhances it to look more professional. Black and white is mandatory for academic writings. However, for tables, diagrams, logos, etc., you can make full use of contrasting colors.
3. Spacing
The recommended spacing is 1.5, and you should never use any other unless instructed. One thing that ties the assignment together is how spaced it is. Between paragraphs, there should be a blank line, and all the questions in the paper should be underlined.
4. Frame Appropriate Headings And Sub-Headings
Most scholars, while faced with a “How can I do my MATLAB assignment,” tend to forget that the most crucial part of the assignment is the headings and sub-headings. Why? They give the reader a hint of the contents of a specific paragraph. Anticipating to impress your professor? Make proper use of the headings and sub-headings. There are several font styles provided, “Heading 1”, “Heading 2”, and so on. Ensure that their font size is greater than the rest of the workings.
5. Headers and Footers
Do not forget to use the headers and footers. The use of these gives your paper an outstanding picture upon a quick glance. Some of the details you can include in your header and footers include;
- Your full name
- Your university registration number
- Your course name
- Assignment number
- Mention page number at the last

today i got some thermo done! i'm now fully done with three assignments for it! i have a lot to go, but i'll be able to do it without needing much assistance from dr noah. so then i can ask him about the matlab things i keep having problems with. yeesh.
but!!! the last problem i did had to be done in matlab and so i was able to create a program to make it and it works BEAUTIFULLY. i'm really proud of it.
tomorrow!! graduation!! i love graduations. they help me feel a strong sense of validation, that pride in myself for doing something worth celebrating. because so far all of my accomplishments have either been inside my own head or academic, it's nice to have an acknowledgement of some of the hard work i put into things. i'm very excited. (but first, joel gets his cast off in the morning.)
i ended up talking to my mom a bunch today about tomorrow, and just talking to her in general. i also helped her sort fabric into boxes so she can reorganize her closet. and i finished decorating my cap.
it was generally a nice day, plus it was cooler outside than it's been lately. so that was nice too. but i got to sit and watch a movie while i worked on homework, as i waited for joel to finish up streaming. i'm glad he's mobile. i know he's excited to get the cast off tomorrow.

AY2019/2020 Y1S1 Module Review
AY2019/2020 year 1 semester 1 review
Started school around august after orientation camp in july, and had to study after doing nothing for months after a levels and finally had the taste of the rigour of this major.. semester 1 went by too quickly..
Modules taken this semester:
CS1010S
MA1101R
MA1521
BT1101
GER1000
CS1010S Programming Methodology (Python)
Prof: Ben Leong
Exam Dates: 2 Oct (Midterm) / 16 Nov (Practical Exam) / 27 Nov (Finals)
Weightage:
Coursemology – 25% (25%)
Participation – 5% (5%)
Midterm test – 15% (-)
Practical exam – 15% (20%)
Final assessment – 40% (50%)
(those in brackets are for those taking alternative final)
S in CS1010S is for science students, most students are either science students (DSA/ Life Science plenty) or BZA students.
Overall this module easily had the highest workload compared to other modules, having to rush missions every week, complete tutorials (this is pretty standard duh) and lecture trainings before deadlines for bonus points on a gamified platform. One could sit at their table wracking their brains for the whole day and still not be able to come up with a feasible code, or have their codes stuck with some bugs and not knowing how to continue. Really, without the help from fellow friends this module would be hard to get through. Luckily my TA was kind (and patient!) enough to explain such that my brain could get it. Ended up having to IP this module sadly… This module really requires your wholehearted devotion and really tests your patience i must say, especially for people who are not too intellectually inclined (aka me)..
They introduced a new scheme this semester aka Alternative Final, meaning you get to retake your midterm and finals by tabao-ing it into the next sem except you do your finals during the recess week instead of the finals, kinda like a half-retaking a module? Your grades for finals are IP-ed (in progress) rather than letter grades and the finals and midterms will be accounted for in the following half a semester albeit under different weightage components.
They said its a introductory module, but …………..
This year’s practical exam was particularly hard i think i had friends (even the zai ones) getting single digit marks… banked full in on the Method of Life question (Q5) of finals which is a giveaway question asking you how you can apply the concepts to other parts of your life and your main take-aways from taking this module (filled up the whole page and got full marks for it 4m) without this question i would have failed the paper..
Now i have to work hard the next sem… its kinda sad for us BZA students because CS1010S is a prerequisite for those wanting to take BT2101 and CS2030/2040 modules in the following semester (y1s2). Future students (esp BZA) please take the advice to consider this when deciding whether to IP…. because guess who didnt and regretted not thinking deeper…..
Ah one more thing to take note is the weightage is quite different for those IP/ alternative final people, theres higher weightage for the papers :_D
Ben Leong is a pretty good lecturer, hes solid in delivering concepts except my brain may be a little too slow for him.. Theres also lecture videos online that you can refer to and thousands of papers (with solutions!!) waiting for you to do.. something uncommon for many modules i heard? also, you get to see your final (scanned) paper through a website, in ben leong’s words “how cool is that?” he also uploads the mark scheme for your reference which is pretty cool imo. He’s a very interesting lecturer.
MA1521 Calculus for Computing
Prof: Leung Pui Fai
Exams: No midterms, just an online quiz (4 questions, most get full marks for), and the finals
Weightage: cant really rmb the weightage but i think its 40-60? i think tutorial attendance isnt graded..
They said this was just a repeat of H2 maths with more stuffs well boy i must say this wasnt as easy as they said.. okay maybe for me, ive always struggled with maths for a really long time. Surprisingly got a B for H2 Maths, i got a B3 for O levels really the blemish in my results. Got a B- for this module. Many people will say this is an easy module, you can trust them a little different in my shoes i guess. I didnt turn up for lectures for the half part of the semester since he talks a bit too slowly so i just watch the webcast sped up. But being a procrastinator i’m really behind on webcasts by the time the exams came.. i think i spent too much time on CS1010S and its still not enough.. if you dont have the discipline to watch them religiously at home, i would suggest you go for the lecture even though he may talk abit slowly but it forces you to not miss out on them. I dont really had the time (is it i wonder?) to do the tutorials either so i was also behind on them.. most of the time i just sat for tutorials and took the answers down to only work on them many weeks later (much regrets) so i didnt really understood what was going on as the TA went through. please dont be like me… the recess week was for sure not enough to revise/ learn all the content for all your mods for both midterms/finals so please dont be lazy like me…. this is the suffering i brought upon myself TT
Overall i think. it is not that hard a mod if you do your work consistently.. things got a little confusing towards the end i heard they dropped a whole chapter this semester glad they did.
MA1101R Linear Algebra I
Prof: Wang Fei
Weightage:
Finals (28 Nov, 2h)— 60%.
Mid-term test (4 Oct, 2h)— 20%.
3 homework assignments (4% per assignment) — 12%.
An in-class Lab (MATLAB) quiz — 8%.
This was one of my most hardest period in my life and i say this on PERIODT. As if maths wasnt tough enough, this will really declare a survival of the fittest among your remaining brain cells. Friends told me maths came into their dreams… pls extinguish my soul. You must be thinking i am crazy for wanting to take 2 math mods in a sem right? ?
Yeahh no one really does that but it was my idea because i didnt want to do maths together with all the core core mods (BT and CS) next sem so i decided ah i should just get maths over and done with ( hAH real joke bc i couldnt clear CS1010S and i cant take 2k level mods for BT and CS and unlocked clown outfit because theres one more ST2334 core mod that involves probability and stats so much for thinking i will be over and done with for dealing with maths– someone tell me why did i choose this major again?)
Somehow along the way i realised the bell curve for this was surprisingly high i think those who chose this mod intend to delve even deeper in mathematics, mayhaps i joined the wrong major. The R in MA1101R actually stands for rigorous i didnt realise until my friend read the fine prints in the SOC Course Curriculum for BZA or sumn. Pure hell. There are 3 homework assignments (graded mind you) and most of the students get around 50++/60 i think i was the one of the rare few who flunked quite badly and always eyeballed by my TA (who is a prof for some 3k or 4k level maths, not for this mod though). I approached him for consults and for help and he was nice enough to sit me down and explain slowly. He’s pretty good at explaining slowly although he’s pretty fast in class (and most of the semester i had close to ZERO idea what was going on in class for pretty much most of the mods). Shockingly managed to pull out a C from my butt. The intellect of the students are no joke.. Homework assignments are every 3 weeks starting week 6 i think (so week 6, 9, 12) and i think are there to make sure you catch up with the work.
Oh lectures-wise, i sat for ½ of his classes, i really absorb almost nothing.. the rest of the lecture hall seem to get it though or so it seems. so i stopped attending my own lectures to watch the webcast for Prof Victor Tan too. His webcasts/lectures are really popular and it really owe it to his teaching, apparently he taught Wang Fei before and of course had over ten more years of experience. WF’s lecture turn-outs are comparatively less compared to VT. And on panopto (webcast platform) i think it was almost always 360++ views for VT as compared to a 80++/ was it 30++ for WF if i recall correctly. VT slides are also more concise and simple to understand where as WF’s ones are similar to the textbook. You are also required to purchase a textbook for this module costs around $20 from the co-op store in science and i urge you to purchase it asap when the profs announce they are made available bc they run oos quite fast.. the tutorial questions are from the textbook and the textbook is very simple and straightforward and put together by some of the lecturers/profs in school.
BT1101 Introduction to Business Analytics
Prof: Dr Sharon Tan, Desmond Ong
Weightage:
1. Online Quiz & Datacamp Assignments — 7%
Tutorial 1-4 — 8%
Tutorial 5 onwards — 15%
In-class Assessment (Written) — 10%
Practical Assessment — 20%
Final Assessment — 40%
In class assessment is held 2ish weeks after your midterms week so its kinda like your midterms?
Mm i would say this module is the most ?? its hard to put in words but if you read up the confessions page (NUSwhispers) regularly you would see many complaints that the mod is structured not as neatly as CS1010S its quite here and there everywhere and personal opinion, sometimes i dont know what i am supposed to learn but i guess its like that? The profs seem to value not wanting to spoonfeed and us learning on our own and stuff like that. I heard the mod was much harder in previous years and they simplified it a lot compared to in the past (which i really thank god) but its still a bit ?? They split it into two halves, first half of the sem is taught by Dr ST (Descriptive Analytics) and the next half by DO (Prescriptive and Predictive Analytics).
There are online videos to be watched every week even though you get lectures once every 2 weeks when Dr ST teaches and tutorials to be submitted to your TAs that are graded only after about 6/7 weeks. They leave comments (½ sentences someitmes shorter) and your marks received and thats about all so you dont really know where you went wrong since they are not marked paper and pen way. The tutorials are coding exercises for questions using the R language. They also used Datacamp to drill some of the basics of R for a headstart. Her workshop style lectures are a lot of on the spot learning how to code and stuff which i lag behind a bit because she goes a bit fast in order to cover everything. We learn new content via the online videos that we have to watch every week and theres quizzes for them too weekly iirc.
The next half by DO had no online videos (great!! and no quizzes!!) but weekly lectures and graded tutorials are due every 2 weeks(!!). There are still weekly tutorials but its only graded for every 2nd one, wow this saved me a lot of time phew. I didnt get to do the tutorials for those that are not graded but read through the questions so that i get a gist of whats going on, and somehow i really dont have the time to do it? CS1010S really absorbed a large chunk of my time cries. Finals was a oK it was not that bad i think. There are 20 MCQs and then about 4 structured questions? Closed-book with 1 A4 sheet cheatsheet.
Oh and the bad part about the tutorials are the tutors wont provide you with the model answers/codes so you’re really just on your own. You either get it or nah. :_D
GER1000 Quantitative Reasoning
Weightage:
1. Tutorial — 10%
2. 10 Weekly Quizzes — 20%
3. Project —35% (Presentation 10%, Final Report 25%)
4. Finals (28 MCQs, 2h) — 35%
No lectures so no profs, just weekly online videos and quizzes.
Tutorials are every odd/even weeks depending on the slot you chose.
Groups are arranged by the TAs beforehand.
This was pre-allocated for us so (grits teeth). Honestly a waste of time. One of the mods i neglected till the end to focus on other mods (which was worth it). The workload was manageable, of course (if not how to neglect). Every 2 week you meet together wiht your groupmates to discuss tutorial questions (each group will discuss 1 qn) and every tutorial class ended about 30min earlier. Nearing the end theres a group project report and slides to be done. Report is in the form of QnA so you just answer the questions and slides/ presentation is going through an article of a topic you chose (theres about 10) and you analyse the QR part of it what is good what can be better, etc. Theres also a bit of the stats part with probability and stuff but its a OK. Bell curve steep for finals (40 MCQ, 2h) but most finished in 1h and left the hall, i was one of the few who stayed till the end even though i was just staring at the paper into the depths of my soul for reasons unknown) It’s a lot about experiments not really the scientific/ calculations part of it but understanding about coming up with experiments, the pros and cons of carrying things out a certain way in loose terms something like the art of crafting experiments? makes you think a bit deeper how and what people think and not so dry i guess.
Epilogue
i guess thats a wrap–new semester starts soon :( i think this might be the first module/semester review tumblr blog but i hope this can be of help to anyone, to anyone at all. the owner of many of similar review blogs get really stellar results which i may be too out of league from so i hope this brings comforts to those who are doing not so well and encourage them because im not any different we exist, and we’ll survive.

today i rolled out of bed about 10 minutes late. i got to campus and had just enough time to talk to the professor about my homework and medical situation before i needed to hold my si session. seven people showed up! out of 300! i was not feeling at my best and fumbled a lot of explanations i realized i could have done way better about 1 minute after everyone left.
also my throat was super sore. i worried i was catching a cold on top of everything. also i bled all over my pajamas, which was annoying.
heather said my throat was probably sore because of the stomach acid and stuff. i didn’t think much of it at first, but later in the day it sounded pretty right.
i had a granola bar for breakfast and had to struggle to keep that down. i tried to go to nuclear class, but had to half-ass my quiz and run out of the room to hide in the bathroom for i think over 10 minutes. i didn’t quite throw up, but i think it was because i had nothing TO throw up. i talked hogan into getting some lunch after class because i was starving, so i had some veggie broth with tofu and noodles and stuff. real gentle. no tea this time, just some sierra mist. i hung out with hogan for a while as he complained about his mother. it’s something we bond over.
as soon as we got up to walk back to the department i started feeling super bad. i was talking and had to stop mid-sentence to try and catch my breath. we saw devon at the department and i tried to say hi but had to cut myself off again. devon said he was leaving for numerical analysis class in five minutes so i said great, i’ll just puke real quick and we can go. i think he thought i was joking, because when i got back he asked where i went. i was all sweaty and shaking. my abdomen was really hurting by that point too. also my throat hurt way worse, providing evidence to heather’s guess.
by the time we got to the math department i was losing my ability to focus without a gargantuan effort. devon and i talked through some matlab programs that the professor had uploaded for us and i was understanding what was going on... well enough. my head felt super hot though, and was starting to actually hurt a lot. by the end of class i was really struggling to keep up with the quiz questions. i think i only made one mistake though. i immediately went home, almost fell asleep on the bus, and trudged through thigh-high snow back to the apartment.
the heat and pain in my head hasn’t gone away for seven hours. i did manage to eat some tofu and bread and keep down some green machine, though it didn’t help my throat feel better. i watched some video essays instead of doing homework. then it was 8. i was gonna break out my books and get something done but then i started talking in a discord chat about my winter break and to asher and now it’s 9. i gotta get up at 6, so i should probably sleep real soon. also i don’t have much more energy to spare for typing.
everyone is being so nice to me. well, not everyone, but a lot of people. i don’t get it. i feel like i’m still letting my professors down. like that patience is gonna run out any minute now. it’s stressing me out. i feel like i’m letting MYSELF down.
i guess my illness picked a really convenient time to get dramatically worse. if i had felt like this before the funeral, i might not have been able to... fully attend, i guess. it’s still not good though. i’m like 2 weeks behind on classwork, and my laplace professor is expecting the work to be in tomorrow. i might be able to do it over the weekend if i really muster up all my energy, but i don’t know about being able to do it while at the hospital or between the hospital visit and class at 12:35.
don’t got much else to say right now. we’ll have to see what the radiologist says tomorrow morning. hard to think straight.

@Clover Thank you for answering my question about the mech and aerospace eng double major program. I'm prefrosh and I've taken foundations of engineering and engineering applications (basic eng classes). I've taken calc BC, multivariable calc, linear algebra, and am currently in diff eq (ODE). I took AP Chem last yr and can satisfy the chem BSE requirement through AP credit. I'm also taking AP Physics (mech and e&m). However, I know very little about robotics and CS. Thank you for your help.
Response from Clover:
Hi again! I think you have an enormous amount of prep that will definitely help you with being MAE. Getting your chem requirement out of the way is major. The fact that you’re in diff eq rn is also really major. With Princeton, they’ll take your BC credit no problem, but you’ll have to take placement tests to get our of MAT 201 and 202 (our multi and linear classes). I don’t think they’ll even take diff eq placement credit, but if you can manage to place out of 201 and 202 and go into MAE 305 with that preparation already, I think you’ll be really far ahead of the curve and do well. If you can get 5s on both mech and E&M, you’ll place out of physics and would be well on track to start your MAE classes early and possibly even be advanced standing... But don’t despair or feel pressured to do that, because I only know 2 people from our year who did that, so it’s not like the norm or anything. With prep of AP Physics, it’ll really help you out in our equivalent PHY 103 and 104. In short, it’s looking like your requirements will be reduced a lot which leaves more room for possibly delving into MAE early, which is great.
Not knowing about robotics and CS is really not a negative thing at all. For COS, everyone has to take COS 126, but you can read up more about the class to find that it’s very well taught. It’s not super beginner friendly to those with 0 CS experience, but with your freshman year looking like it’ll have less pre-reqs going on, you should be able to dedicate a good amount of time to the class. Within MAE we only really have been doing MATLAB stuff through sophomore year, so you’ll be good to go at least for those first 2 year. As for robotics experience, that really doesn’t impact you at all. Starting next year, MAE 322 (one of the engineering design courses) will start to be offered in the spring, which means the earliest you would get involved with a hands-on engineering project like that will be sophomore spring most likely. But most everyone will also have no robotics experience, so you won’t be at a disadvantage. There’s no required “robotics class” in MAE, just an optional one. I think your foundational engineering courses are a perfect amount of prep for when you start delving into more hands-on engineering in Junior year-- you’ll already be ahead with that experience under your belt. And if you were worried about lack of robotics experience impacting your participation in engineering-related clubs, that won’t affect you either-- all our engineering clubs here are very open to beginners.
With freshman year stuff aside, I think that you’re as prepared as you possibly can be to come into this curriculum. Some of the first MAE classes you will take will have strong echoes of physics, such as with MAE 223 and 206 (solid mechanics and engineering dynamics). Others will be tangential to core subjects, but could be helped along by your experience with general engineering, such as MAE 221 and 222 (thermo and fluids). The classes are more rigorous than high school even if they echo core subjects you’ve taken-- I took all the same APs and still find the homework and exams to be challenging. This being said, you really are super well prepared in terms of having taken those AP courses-- just being experienced with that kind of class rigor and the problem-solving/study techniques involve will help you immensely. If you end up placing out of a lot of classes, I’d try to delve into one MAE class your freshman spring if you can-- I think it’s the absolute best way to test that rigor for yourself. If you end up taking physics and some math again, no worries! I’d focus on those and put your full effort into them, and then from there you can still get a good sense of what the rigor of MAE will be like, as I think PHY/MAT gives you a baseline of the difficulty of Princeton STEM courses in general. You’ll get into the groove of studying for exams here, working on problem sets effectively, etc., and if you end the year open to or even eager for more, than I think MAE will go just fine for you!

TIPS on answering CV based Interview Questions
Components of a CV:
1. Contact Details
2. Personal Statement/ Objectives
3. Academics
4. Skills/ Languages Spoken
5. Projects
6. Work Experience
7. Extra-curricular Achievements
8. Interests/ Hobbies/ Passions
9. References/ Declarations
Recruiters consider it fair game to ask questions related to anything on your Resume.
1. Use your CV to guide the course of the interview towards your strengths.
2. Avoid mentioning projects/ skills related to a domain if you are uncomfortable fielding questions related to that domain.
Commonly asked questions on Career Objectives:
Why do you want to work as a Content Writer <or any other role>? Why do you want to work for us? What do you know about our company?
“Writing is my hobby. I have been writing blogs for the past 3 years. You can go through some of my posts at www.myblog.com. I intend to write a book someday. This role is perfect for me!”
“I have been building software Apps as a hobby for a while now. Some simple 2D games that I have built are available on GitHub. With this job, I would be paid to work on something that I have already been pursuing as a hobby.”
If you have included a Personal Statement or Career Objectives statement, ensure that it aligns with the role that you are applying for.
Why do you want to work for us? What do you know about our company?
1. Do your homework. Go through the website of the company you’re applying for. Understand its mission and values.
2. Understand the customers of this company and how it delivers value to those customers.
3. If possible, get introduced to an existing employee in that organization using your network of contacts / alums. Have a conversation about the company with your contact before the interview. Mention it during the interview to showcase your diligence.
Commonly asked questions on Education/ Academics with some suggested answers:
Why did you decide to become an Engineer? / Why did you decide to focus on English for your B.A.?
“I’ve always liked tinkering with electronic and mechanical devices as a child. I like building stuff, taking things apart and generally figuring out how things work. Engineering was a natural fit for me!”
“I have always been a voracious book worm. I guess you could even say that I come from a family of book worms because everyone in my family reads a lot. English and Literature are my passions.”
Use this question as an opportunity to talk about your passions in life and how they align with your chosen education stream.
Why are your grades so poor?
“I really felt free for the first time in my life during my college years. I was used to being motivated by parental pressure and struggled to be disciplined without external motivation. But I believe that I have now acquired the discipline to become a self-motivated, responsible person.”
“I was nominated to be the Placement Representative <or any extracurricular activity>. I prioritized that role over my academics. I think that I have learnt more through real world organizational experience than through books.”
Acknowledge your lack of focus and discipline. Express your regret at the poor effort you have put in academically and point out reasons why you are on the mend.
Questions on Skills/ Languages/ Software Tools:
1. How does the JAVA Compiler ensure platform independence?
2. Why don’t you introduce yourself in French?
3. What is a Pivot Table?
If you mention in your Resume that you are proficient in a particular domain, you can definitely expect questions in that domain. Be prepared to field questions related to fundamentals in that domain.
Commonly asked questions on Academic/ Extra-Curricular Projects:
Explain this project in very simple terms as though you’re talking to a seven-year old. / What are the potential real-world applications of this project?
“I built an automated braking system that uses Infrared sensors to detect if there are obstacles ahead and automatically apply brakes. It could be used in cars and trains to avoid collisions.”
“My team analyzed all available data compression techniques to identify the optimal compression technique for specific scenarios – streaming videos, sending secure file attachments etc. This graph explains our findings in detail.”
Avoid jargon. Explain everything in simple terms while clearly conveying the idea.
Focus on real-world applications of your projects. Have a few illustrations where the concepts are applicable and explain those in detail.
Represent information visually. Bring a folder with charts documenting key findings from your project. Or you can always draw a quick graph on paper or on whiteboard summarizing key findings.
What are your key learnings from this project? What were your contributions?
“Primarily, I would say that I learnt using MATLAB for this project and I have become quite proficient at it.”
“I learnt the importance of early feedback. We often interacted with our assigned Professor much early during the project and hence we were able to incorporate all his inputs so that we could really make an impression.”
Have a list of bullet points on learnings – technical as well as non-technical. Be ready to talk about them if asked.
If this was a team project, you should be prepared to answer when asked about your specific contributions to the project.
Commonly asked questions on Work Experience – Full Time as well as Internships:
What were your roles and responsibilities? / How did you help the company and its customers?
“I worked in Sales, specifically Tele-Calling. I would call up leads and explain our value proposition. I achieved 24 conversions totaling $5300 during my two month internship. When a conversion happened, I was happy because I was adding value to my company and to the customer who made the purchase!”
“I built a free Mobile App for making appointments with dentists online. Consumers benefited by being able to find highly rated dentists and book appointments. Dentists received more patients. My proposal to remind users to schedule a check-up if they had not visited a dentist in 2 years was accepted and built into the App.”
1. Link your daily tasks to the value created for the company as well as for its customers.
2. Use specific metrics to measure the impact of your work.
3. Highlight any process/ requirement change proposed by you during your work.
What were your learnings? / If you were to do this job again from scratch, what would you do differently?
“I have learnt the importance of asking for critical feedback from my managers and from my peers. If I were to do it all again, I would pro-actively schedule feedback sessions myself to understand where I can improve myself.”
“The biggest learning was the importance of the User Interface in driving engagement. Most users would move on if they didn’t find something useful or interesting within the first 6 seconds. A website has to make a fantastic first impression to gain traction.”
Have a list of items that you have learnt from your job/ internship.
1. It could be technical: you have now become proficient in SQL.
2. It could be process-oriented: you have started tracking tasks in a dashboard and you regularly keep your manager updated on progress
3. It could be at the business level: you have learnt the importance of customer-centricity to organizational success.
Commonly asked questions on Extra-Curricular Activities, Interests and Passions:
What have you learned from your hobbies? / How did you benefit from attending this event? / What paper did you present at this seminar?
