I do think Blazing Saddles handled its one depiction of native americans very poorly, and the full extent of its representation of chinese workers on the railroad is they were literally just there. not even one single speaking line. unclear if this is worse or better than the redface.
it's fucking phenomenal at lampooning antiblack racism though. extremely blatant, extremely funny satire, which is constantly and loudly saying "racism is the philosophy of the terminally stupid at best and morally depraved at worst, and we should all be pointing and laughing at them 24/7"
plus the main character is a heroic black man who has to navigate a whole lot of bullshit but is constantly smirking at the extraordinarily stupid racists and inviting the audience into the joke. the one heroic white character is a guy who was suicidally depressed until he met the protagonist and they just instantly became buds, and he's firmly in a supporting role the whole time and happy to be there. the protagonist saves the day with the help of his black friends from the railroad, and uses the position of power he was given to uplift not only those friends, but all the railroad workers of other minorities too, in an explicit show of solidarity.
anyone saying "Blazing Saddles is racist" had better be talking about its treatment of non-black minorities. it had better not be such superficial takes as "oh but they say the n-word all the time" or "they have nazis and the kkk in there!" because goddamn if that's the full extent of your critique I very seriously suggest you read up on media analysis. there is too much going over your head, you need to learn to recognize satire.
Small but significant character moments that I actually really adore are from both the times we see the boys as tots. There is a reoccurrence that happens in both of them that I find so incredibly interesting.
For the turtle tot short, Splinter leaves the boys with weapons. In the short, Raph is the one who suggests they do “what Lou Jitsu would do” and Leo is the one who takes point when Splinter comes back to reprimand them. Leo, in taking point, is the one to defend them and get Splinter off their tails.
And then, in the flashback regarding the Kuroi Yōroi helmet, Raph is the one who grabs and throws “Skully” as a way to replace their missing ball which breaks it into pieces, but Leo is the one who speaks for the group and rushes into action to fix the teapot.
I love this for multiple reasons, but the biggest are how it shows that Raph has always been inclined toward the bold and fun and making the plans to include his brothers in what he loves and believes they’d love, whereas Leo has always been inclined to be the “Face” of the group and shoulder the attention even if it’s potentially negative all while coming up with on the spot attempts to fix the situation.
In the episode Polymorph, the bit where Rimmer is watching old home movies from his childhood. It made me think how he’s trying to look back on his childhood with some kind of positive nostalgia. Yes, growing up in that household was smegged up in many ways, but in all honesty it’s the only family he had at the time.
Since he’s dead, he’s trying to look back on his life as worthwhile with some sort of ‘loving’ family growing up. But of course it’s not true so he deceive himself in that aspect.
Back in the Better Than Life episode, it truly hit home that his whole family is dead. I think the show sweeps over Rimmer’s confusing grief because it’s mainly focusing on Lister losing the human race and everyone he known. Yet the same can also be said about Rimmer and how he could be missing civilisation too. But he sweeps it under the rug and focuses on keeping Lister sane as it’s his main mission as a hologram. Therefore making it seem like the whole situation didn’t effect him emotionally and mentally.
But onto my original point, Rimmer had a smegged family but it’s still his family and all of them are dead. In some way it’s relieving for him yet in other ways they were the main people in his life so probably watching those home movies in Polymorph was some sort of comfort to him. Course he knows they weren’t the best of people deep down, that’s why he didn’t yell at Kryten when he called Rimmer’s mother a trout.
I wonder in the episode, Trojan, if there was grief for Howard dying. Probably not since it’s a comedy series but let’s pretend for a minute. Imagine your brother died millions of years ago, came back as a hologram then died again properly saving you. God, the amount of confusing feelings for that would be a psychologist’s dream.
I would want to see someone’s take on this in a fanfic or add on to my mental mess. Basically looking and coming up with a way on how Rimmer felt about his whole family being dead the minute he woke up as a hologram and actually thinking about it in Better Than Life.
Otakon's AMV contest allowed VHS submissions, and I knew I just had to submit the collab I edited with @astravis this way.
I hope it's clear why!
youtube
(It uses a lot of actual VHS footage.)
And I loved putting AMVs on tape so much that I quickly ordered a bunch of blank tapes online to compile all of my anime music videos this way.
(Short reel of a few of them.)
And, like, it's definitely far from perfect. My computer doesn't have an HDMI port, so I have to use a converter for that, and it's horrible quality. While that does add to the VHS aesthetic, it also makes some of the subtitles nigh impossible to read (as especially evident in the "First Time" video above). My digitization process also isn't exactly ideal, either.
But popping in a VHS tape of my videos and seeing that on the TV? Absolutely amazing. There is no other way I want to physically compile my AMVs. 10/10. MarshmallowGoop/MarshmallowGoop.
Would like to improve my process someday, but if anyone else is curious about how to make VHS tapes out of videos on your computer, I mostly followed this guide here!
I need to work on the neck a bit more, but I cut off the mask's neck piece, stuck another doll head into the mask to be the back of her head (and so I can connect her to the new body), and tried my best to do something with her hair.
I would say I'm more surprised they didn't make more Fiona dolls, considering how popular Shrek was in the 00's, but toy companies seem to think girls hate green and a plus sized doll was a hard sell in the era of "be as as skinny as possible" so.
And nowadays Shrek is considered a meme franchise so I doubt we'll get another official one anytime soon. A shame because this is a genuinely lovely sculpt and face up, and I adore it so much.
I've rewatched Howl's Moving Castle after years and fell in love with Hauru againnn!
I took my kalimba out and tried to remember how to play the main theme song <3
I need to play more, it's so cute and fun...
