Idk definitely something with strings though) but that dan dan dan / dan dan dan / dan dan dan dan dan dan / dan dan / dan dan / dan dad dan dan dan thing that repeats all throughout Riku's theme is so... uuuaaaaghhhh............... 'Thunder and lightning Heading your way Ride the rainbow Crack the sky
Stormbringer coming Time to die' — Stormbringer by Deep Purple
In other words:
'You've been thunderstruck' —Thunderstruck by AC/DC
Thyjs' theme playlist.
FIRST:
Yup! That's right – Thyjs is going to electrify y'all.
My original thought was that I've wanted to create a little playlist with thunder/storm/electro lyrics but then I stumbled over these songs in the list up there (first one shook me the most) and so I threw my original idea into the storm. Spending like two months on it now how to write down what I feel or see when I listen to this selection tied to Thyjs. So, here's his entire Playlist now: basically Introduction and fight theme songs as well as a calm one — like I did with V before but different.
Storm If I had to choose just one song for him, this one would be it. This awesome instrumental song is the ultimate standalone theme song for Thyjs. Like his goddamn introduction in a movie appearance. When I listened to it for the first time it just struck me like one of his lightning strikes. It is the only song that can be tied to the cyberpunk music genre since every song in the list is more classical soundtrack-ish (he needs that epicness. He's a godverdomme soldier). Back to the song: It sounds tempting right from the start with that beat giving you an overall Cyberpunk feeling at first, making you somehow feel alarmed because of the electronic sound. The air around you may feel electrified and you know something is coming. Then suddenly there is that melodic part setting in with those classical elements that literally screams 'Thyjs' to me. When I look at him I see; He's beauty, he is grace — but coming as an all through soldier package. No one would probably expect it but Thyjs does love to listen to classical music (piano, violin/cello and entire orchestra) of various known artists as well that is why it brought me on the way to look for songs like these in the list. It calms him down, especially after a long and hard mission. To me he feels unapproachable, like he's not from this world at all, yet he is. Wherever he goes in uniform or military gear, people will look at him with a certain respect. You're immediately drawn into admiring him because you probably ain't seen such a pale soldier like him ever before. He can make you feel like time stopped only to let you know with a loud thundering bang that everything you see is real and time is still running. That is when that part that sounds electrifying somewhere near the middle of that song, starts right out of nowhere. Sir! I'm so sold to it right now. I have to admit, the song is fairly long at 7 min, yet I recommend listening to it completely but the important parts really are the start and the middle.
Into the Storm is literally Thyjs getting ready for the battle that lies before him. Ride right into the storm, full force. It is like he can feel a storm is coming, with the storm being the enemies. You gotta know, Thyjs is a soldier to the bone. He devoted his entire life to it, trained as soon as he was old enough for it, to serve his country and Benelux Union. He's heroic in his own way. And that song does him justice.
I'm Electro A short song that strikes you after just a few seconds — the hard way. It represents that you gotta show some respect towards him if you do not behave correctly. He'll immediately put you back into your place where you belong, using his voice and electro shock (if you dare to enter his comfort zone) — like AC/CD would say: in the 'You've been thunderstruck' way (it's in fact exactly what happened to Ryder meeting Thyjs for the first time). Thyjs is capable of making use of electricity that is fed into his left arm, therefore also the glowing (Hanako) cyberware. The brighter it glows the more electricity Thyjs has to make use of. He already knew very early he was kind of immune to electricity after he grabbed an electrified fence feeling literally nothing. Once he lost his left forearm during a heavy battle with drones he decided to get himself some limb replacement that could make use of electricity since he literally survived a lightning strike as well on the battlefield during a thunderstorm, but more of that I'll keep for another time. That battle also gave him his nickname 'Storm', which he also uses as a code name. He can power up from any source that is running with electricity — Night City is full of it. He will give Arki and Ryder a boost if they need some as well. Ry gets himself Shock-n-Awe installed after having met his future lover for the first time. Thyjs even suggested the team to wear mods in their clothing gear if they do not want additional cyberware to their body because lightning can't be really controlled. It will always spread over to the next best source.
Storm Another Storm song (I wanted to decide for one of them but they are both so awesome I have to include them both). This one here seems to be a re-interpretation of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and this song hits differently: Thyjs has Sandevistan — the Militech 'Apogee' Sandevistan Mk. V of course. So he's fast. Like lightning. The fast stringed instruments represent his fast acting and when that thunder sets in right at the start he vanishes into air. The only time you'll see him is before he starts and when he ends it, with the ladder it is already too late for you. The highlights in the song can stand for that if you are able to watch him in action you will be seeing him in between, avoiding incoming their enemies that are fast as well, sometimes he may even look gracefully, appearing for a moment, time pausing for max 3 seconds until he vanishes again just to reappear in a different place again, slaying his enemies one after another. You can hear exactly 3x a loud bang in that song around 2 min in — this is him starting with Sandevistan going for the enemy, then disappears, leaving only electricity behind, and lastly he shows up again, right in front of you with his Constitutional Arms M2038 Tactician 'The Headsman' Power Shotgun –BANG– three enemies on the ground, limbs missing, or even their heads exploded. He's able to load his shotgun within his used Sandevistan time but he often makes use of his toxic knife as well dealing severe damage to the enemy who will die because of poison going into their bloodstream.
Tempest It's like that epic battle song everyone likes and may even get goosebumps from. It is fast paced, tearing forward, to set one strike after another. See it as the last boss battle. The final big one. Before everything is finally done. Battle won, for Thyjs and his squad (when he was still serving) or the team he joins shortly after the incident out in the badlands that led to his whole squad being blown up and him being the only survivor. If you can't imagine Thyjs' fight style in some epic battle try imagine a combination of playing battlefield V and e.g. watching Final Fantasy Kings Glaive. Thyjs moves similar like Nyx Ulric, the warps with the weapons I mean, only he does not warp, he's just super fast with his Sandevistan but also leaving lightning behind.
Van Gogh's White Roses Calm moments incoming. Thyjs loves to play piano. The pretty tunes calm him down as he plays them, or even just listens to them. It is his way to chill and he could do it all day long appreciating the calm moments of his live thrice as much because as a soldier he is mostly on high alert (even if it doesn't look like it) and always prepared that every day could be his last. So better especially appreciate the little things in live and things that he loves: music, art, flowers and his new gained friends and most of all; time with his love: Ryder. The moment I decided Thyjs is Dutch was when I added the ears cyberware to him. Idk I just got reminded of Van Gogh in that moment. So Thyjs went to be Dutch, he loves Impressionism and is ofc an admirer of Van Gogh's art (I might do an extra post for that as well some time why I made Thyjs like Van Gogh).

Favorite Final Fantasy Music (FFXIV - Shadowbringers)
It is finally time for the best expansion. From the moment the first trailer dropped, to logging into the expansion for the first time, you know this part of the soundtrack is different. A lot of heavy songs, both in genre and in meaning, for an amazing combination of bangers and tearjerkers that I'm sure everyone who has played this expansion appreciates.
Like Stormblood, I would regret putting in any of the past game/other game remixes in here in lieu of XIV original tracks, but know they're all amazing (that fucking cover of Force Your Way dude. Holy shit)
5. Knowledge Never Sleeps In a way, this is kinda also a spot for Tomorrow and Tomorrow, but I just personally really like this version specifically. This is the music for the Crystarium, but only during night time (which is a big thing for the story so it has like, significance, rather than just being a nice night time theme). The song starts with a really nice piano/orchestra version of the Shadowbringers theme, but then once the actual Tomorrow and Tomorrow motif comes in, that's when I really love it. The violins playing it up, then the song getting more lighthearted with the harpsichord and other strings, and finally the ghostly, yet beautiful choir. The song is already really emotional, but this version gets to play a lot more frequently, and so is like a reminder of your journey, as well as still being a great theme for the city it plays in.
4. The Black Wolf Stalks Again This is a really interesting song. The previous weapon fight was hard rock into choir of death, and now here, against Emerald Weapon, it starts again with the Primals cover of Ultima, but then in the second phase, you get something a lot more subdued. A slower tempo, yet still a song that goes hard. That intro guitar on top of the reveal that "Oh shit it's installed with Gaius" gives you that chill down your spine, and then it goes into the empire theme to really create that menacing aura. The song overall is not AS in your face as some songs are, but give you a heavy beat to bop your head to during the fight. I love that really cool metallic bouncing sound that plays, that to me sounds like echoing metal in the water, perfect for a fight against Emerald which originally was in the water (I choose to believe this was on purpose). I also love the more bitcrushed sounds as well. Finally, that fucking final guitar feature where it just SHREDS on you, is just beautiful. The last point I want to give to this song, is the title. The Black Wolf Stalks Again is so fucking raw, that even just reading it alone gives me chills.
3. To The Edge The only reason this song isn't higher is because I was the last person in my raid group to get the Gwiber of Light and NO I'M NOT STILL SALTY ABOUT IT. That aside, this song is beautiful. The fight is beautiful. my fucking reaction when I saw we were facing off against the actual original FFI box art Warrior of Light? aaaaaaaaaaaaa! The clock ticking in the background echoing Amaurot? AAAAAAAAAAA! The percussion in this entire song is so good, I love how it's really subtle compared to some of the other rock songs, but unique enough to bring attention to itself. The way the vocals start with a whisper and the main Shadowbringers theme, into a sort of low quality radio sound, feels like it's supposed to represent Elidibus's fading memories. Also, you gotta love the Riding Home sound whenever it comes in. All of this leading up to the build up to the chorus and the actual chorus itself, giving you this hard rock version of the Amaurot theme is enough to make the screen somehow really wet and blurry and I don't know why I can't see the boss guys??? This song is a perfect end to the overall Shadowbringers story, and it just gives you that Little Extra Gutpunch when you find out it was written when Soken was at the peak of fighting off his cancer. Shit man. (DEEP INSIDE, WE'RE NOTHING MORE, THAN SCIONS AND SINNERS!!!!!!!!)
2. Shadowbringers Like I said at the start, the moment that first trailer dropped, you know this soundtrack was gonna be something else. This was my first expansion release for FFXIV, and I craved the longer and longer versions more and more (Dawntrail's doing that to me right now goddammit). That solemn intro with the visuals of death and darkness and fire, the Exarch's words playing in your head whenever you listen, but also this part of the song used for a lot of the heavier parts of this story has its own legendary energy... but then the guitar starts. The guitar and the rising orchestra. Those whispery vocals. It sounds like a barren desert, perfect for the WoL walking forward, exhausted. The vocals in general alone make this song addictive, Jason Charles Miller fucking slays this whole song. The band getting more involved, which can I just say is VERY unlike the previous trailers, hypes you up like no other, especially with this losing battle on the screen as the WoL goes through all of his previous jobs. Then the song reaches its peak. The whole section starting with "AUTHORS OF OUR FATES" is so hype, but then that fucking CHOIR. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME! RIDING HOOOOOOOOOOOOME! SHIT MAN! THAT'S MY GODDAMN FAVORITE PART. I MISS LOGGING ONTO THE GAME EVERY DAY AND HAVING THAT HEAVENLY CHORUS BLAST INTO MY FACE, IT'S LIKE THAT GIF OF LOUISOIX GETTING BAHAMUTED. IN THE PRIMALS VERSION THEY ADD THIS SICK GUITAR SHREDDING IN THE BACK WHICH JUST LIKE, HOW DID YOU MAKE IT EVEN BETTER?????? Then the song goes into Eternal Wind???? OH SHIT IT'S FFIII TIME! I stand by what I said when I said Eternal Wind is the greatest thing FFIII did for the world, and this is the peak of that point. I also still get shivers, again, the Exarch's lines always playing in my head when I hear it. That finale, the WE FAAAAAAAALL, with the sight of the light sky being cut in half showing the dark, and the reveal of the Dark Knight? Dude. This was as much of a "I love this song" as it was an "I love this trailer", because the two are intertwined.
1. A Long Fall This song, is the pinnacle of "What the fuck." Because, this is the song, for just a Random Dungeon. Like we've had dungeons go hard before! But this is another level. That intro beat goes absolutely insane, and the song does not chill out at any point, you are bopping and banging 100% of the time. It's also like, absolutely perfect for what this dungeon is??? It's a combination of eScape, Omega's battle theme, representing the Garlond Ironworks, and the Crystal Tower theme, cause duh, you're in the Crystal Tower (also a little bit of the Prelude cause why fucking not???), and it's all just expertly weaved together to make an amazing song and an amazing storytelling device. I know I'm not ranting and raving about it as much as Shadowbringers, which might seem weird that it's a place higher, but I truly do not have more to say about this song. You can listen to it, you'll probably fucking understand! I can listen to this song on repeat for hours, and I still won't sick of it. It also gets bonus points for the meme (shoutouts to TheTwinning.mp4) and it getting official fucking recognition in the actual Primals music video. This song is legendary, and again, it's just for a random fucking dungeon. Soken who LET YOU COOK BECAUSE THEY SHOULD LET YOU DO IT AGAIN
Honorable mentions go to: Four-fold Knowing, Rencounter, Insatiable, What Angel Wakes Me, In The Belly of the Beast, Full Fathom Five, Neath Dark Waters, Mortal Instants, Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Blinding Indigo, Landslide, Floundering in the Depths, Primal Angel, Return to Oblivion, The Queen Awakens, Wrath of the Harrier, and Seven Flames, as well as all of the FFVIII and NieR remixes.

Musical Breakdown of A Whole New World's instrumentation (Original vs Live Action)
So I went and did it lol. This is going to be long.
Disclaimer: I’m a pianist and a hobbyist arranger so like, this is all based on my limited knowledge and just … vibes. I’m not 100% sure about the instruments I identify because honestly I just learned to pick out orchestra instruments recently. But hey, I’m still gonna go off in this PERSONAL analysis lol because I think orchestration really gets underappreciated in how much it’s able to contribute to the overall emotion the listener feels.
Ok so first of all, music is about expression and sending a message to your audience. You’re trying to convey something. So let’s being by setting some facts straight: The song is about a magic carpet ride. The singers are soaring through the sky, completely enamored by how beautiful everything is and how freeing it is from up in the sky, and in each other’s company. I think we can all agree on this general message.
Now then, let’s see how the instrumentation affects how this is conveyed. I won’t be talking too much about the vocal performance because I’m not a singer lol. Imo all singers did a generally good job tho, and my main gripes are not with them.
Some terms that might need explanation: crescendo – gradually gets louder diminuendo - gradually gets softer arpeggio – broken chord sixteenth notes – notes that last for ¼ of a beat glissando – a slide between 2 notes
Overview:
The original is light and colorful, with a bias towards soprano instruments. The piano, which can do a whole range of notes, is the one that carries the bass of the song (and well probs some strings like the cello, but they don’t get heavy). There’s a general theme of low notes ascending crescendo scales/glissandos/arpeggios/sixteenth notes. Another theme is starting low and embellishing the ends of the phrases with high pitched notes and instruments. I think this is quite fitting for the whole feel of awestruck wonder, and taking off from the ground before soaring through the sky. These all help give the listener the feeling of well, elation, soaring, floating, etc. “high” or “up” seems to be the theme. There’s no percussion in the song, so there’s nothing really keeping it grounded.
As for the live action: It's heavy. It’s grand. It’s explosive. It feels like the drummer had this intense main character syndrome and just went off by themselves.
But the guitar addition was nice—it adds a different vibe that I do like. Honestly the intro was a different vibe that was enjoyable in its own way. It just doesn’t balance out how … idk where the other choices are coming from. I am struggling to see the context in the choices, as this song about flying and romance is—albeit grand, really so heavy that it cannot take off.
Intro
OG: basically a piano arpeggio (aka broken chord) with … flute (?), a glockenspiel, and a harp. The piano intro starts in the usual low register, and is accented by the high-pitched instruments at the end of the phrases. There’s a tentative, wondering feeling, which ties well with Jasmine’s tentativeness at the start.
LA: instead of an arpeggio, it’s piano with strings setting up the atmosphere. Takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s also okay—it’s a different kind of uncertainty, one that is purer and more innocent. Or maybe not exactly uncertainty, but rather a shyness. But it still works imo, it’s just a diff vibe which is fine.
I can show you the world Shining, shimmering, splendid Tell me, princess, now when did you last let your heart decide? I can open your eyes Take you wonder by wonderOver, sideways and under on a magic carpet ride
OG: Chimes, flute, oboe (?), piano, harp, strings (esp violin). The piano is still carrying most of the bass, while the rest of the instruments are there to keep things sounding light. It should be noted that the piano is playing around the second octave to the 3rd/4th (?) Not sure exactly but considering the 4th octave is where middle C is, you can see they refuse to go too low and make it heavy. The winds are providing the countermelody, while the harp glissandos and chimes are there to tickle us and give that “magical” feeling every now and then.
LA: Most noticeable is the addition of the guitar. It slightly veers away from the more traditional orchestra instruments by adding a guitar. That’s fine, it’s a nice touch, Aladdin isn’t really some fancy king, and guitars are associated with a more “commonfolk” vibe, as this is also a much more accessible instrument than the other orchestra instruments. It’s a vibe I’m digging, honestly, so kudos for that.
We’re having some heavy bass here but it still sounds good. The guy is of course singing in a lower register, and we’re just starting out. This has a more earnest vibe to it. More grounded. More down-to-earth. It’s romantic in its own way, and I guess it fits the whole realism live action thing.
A whole new world A new fantastic point of view No one to tell us "No", or where to goOr say we're only dreaming
OG: The strings become a more prominent force here in the chorus, also in the higher register. The high-pitched violins are giving more substance than the winds earlier (as you want to have a stronger sound in the chorus), and they accompany the harp as well in its crescendo to give it more force. The winds still embellish the last parts of the phrases. The instrumentation continues to stay biased towards the higher register.
LA: From being quite quiet and earnest with the instrumentation, it just … EXPLODES. IDK WHY. It’s like a bomb goes off. The percussion is so. Fucking. In your face. Which is a choice I just really don’t understand. You can have light percussion!! Why is this so heavy, like they suddenly started that overemphasized drum track you get at karaoke. Or when you just add that backing track beat from your electric keyboard.
Idk like it sounds a bit more pop-ish, and while I am fan of pop, the drums are just stripping the song of any magic. Can’t we have some magic because live action be damned, THIS IS A FUCKING FLYING CARPET. NOTHING REALISTIC ABOUT THIS.
A whole new world A dazzling place I never knew But when I'm way up here It's crystal clear That now I'm in a whole new world with you
OG: Ah, Lea comes in with her show-stopping voice. I’ve always admired how she really puts the “clear” in crystal clear with her delivery, but one detail I failed to notice initially was how at the start and end of that line, the glock sounds a delicate note, completely solidifying that crystal imagery. It’s just such a good detail.
In “that now I’m in a whole new world with you”, the melody dips lower and the instruments back off a bit, leaving the piano and some ambient strings. This sets up yet another crescendo glissando (this time joined by Brad’s singing) to transition into the next verse! It’s evident this is a recurring thematic choice, and this up and down theme and a low start climbing and building up to explode into sparkles is just so satisfying each time!
LA: Again, why is the beat so heavy???? It’s drowning everything else out. Cymbals??? What???? THE TOMS???? ABSOLUTELY KILL THE MOOD????? It's like they got a drummer and he had this main character syndrome 😭
Unbelievable sights, indescribable feeling Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling Through an endless diamond sky
OG: This might be my absolute favorite bit in this entire song—it just really makes me go *clenches fist* *goosebumps* *chills down spine* *tears in eyes* so good. I think the piccolo (?) (Or maybe flute and piccolo?) shines here, and the glock gets more prominent. These are extremely effective at producing a twinkling, sparkling sound, which makes you think of stars in the night sky, or more specifically, “an endless diamond sky”. There’s also a short run of descending sixteenth notes from the piccolo again (or flute?) that makes you think of tripping or well, tumbling, right exactly when Lea sings “soaring, tumbling, freewheeling”. The piccolo also repeats that small run at “diamond” which just tickles hehe. The piccolo and glock are very cute instruments, and they absolutely shone (or better yet, twinkled) in this verse. Such good choices.
LA: Ok I like the tension the strings add here. It’s not the light sparkly beauty of the original but it’s reminiscent, a stronger version. It matches the deeper, darker (?) quality of Naomi's voice compared to Lea's. BUT AGAIN WHAT IS THE HEAVY PERCUSSION DOING HERE. WITH THE CYMBALS. IT’S REALLY THAT BACKING TRACK YOU ACCIDENTALLY PRESS ON YOUR KEYBOARD. There's also brass doing the countermelody? It goes with the heavier sound but yeah idk you already have a lot making this song heavy and then you add brass to make it … heavier. But the brass touch is still better than whatever is going on with the percussion.
A whole new world (Don't you dare close your eyes) A hundred thousand things to see (Hold your breath, it gets better) I'm like a shooting star, I've come so far I can't go back to where I used to be A whole new world (Every turn, a surprise) With new horizons to pursue (Every moment, red-letter) I'll chase them anywhere There's time to spare Let me share this whole new world with you
OG: They’re doing the crescendo glissandos almost every line now! But aside from that, yeah they’re keeping the general theme they did last chorus. At the end of this, though, they seem to be setting up a landing, so while the glissando still happens, there’s no crescendo.
LA: Ok we have those harp glissando crescendo but instead of it exploding into sparkles I feel like it gets smashed back down by the cymbal crash??? LIKE THE MAGIC IS TRYING TO HAPPEN BUT THE PERCUSSION KEEPS SMOTHERING IT. The individual beat emphasis for “I’m. Like. A. Shooting staarr” WHAT WHY WHY WHY. This is not it. That is not the vibe. I do enjoy pop music and rock music and just … music where drums are heavily used but this is not it!!!!
The strings are similar to the original and the harp glissandos are still there and the vocalists are killing it and then the cymbals just crash in on “wooorrrllld” PLEASE STOP.
AND DID THEY USE THE TOMS IN THE LANDING SET UP PART. WHAT. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE ROMANTIC AND SLOWING DOWN. Like ok they ended it with a soft cymbal crash but you could have like … not done that at all. IT's REALLY SUCH A VIBE KILLER.
A whole new world (A whole new world) That's where we'll be (That's where we'll be) A thrilling chase (A wondrous place) For you and Me
OG: It seems our fliers are about to descend from their earlier high, so the music is changing to express that. The tempo gets slower, there’s a very gradual diminuendo. The oboe (?) is back, and we’re going into a lower register, the one in the first verse. The glock is still there to add that occasional tickle.
I do like that they make the piccolo/flute (sorry I really am not good at telling them apart yet) do that ascending run at “a thrilling chase” because the high pitch during this “landing” catches us a bit off guard (we’re supposed to be descending and slowing down now!) so that really does make it feel like we were chased. The surprise is a small thrill.
LA: Ok I can deal with these single high hats (?) at the start of each measure. It’s actually nice. THIS is using it well.
OUTRO
OG: The vocals are at a low note, the fliers have landed and their voices slowly fade out. It is now time for us listeners to leave them on the ground, and prepare for the final sparkler sendoff. The flute and piano do the high pitched outro melody. The flute then sustains its note to keep us in the sky while the ritardando arpeggio from the piano climbs back up again to build up tension enough to set up the last sparkle/firework for that magical feel, courtesy of chimes and a quick piano arpeggio. They probably wanted to emphasize and sustain the lightness at the end though for like movie scene purposes so the strings carry that well and then die down.
LA: So the strings handle the melody while the singers are still singing. That's alright. Kind of gives a heavy romantic vibe.
The guitar and piano take over doing melody when the voices sing their last line, and it’s a nice touch, calling back to the intro. Thankfully the percussion is gone by this point. The strings also serve the purpose of sustaining the last note, like in the original.
--
So that's it. If you made it this far, honestly, thank you for reading. I super appreciate it. If you have any of your own thoughts to share, I'd love to hear them!

The "aura" of Jazz throughout the years
Jazz- the music you think of when you see New Orleans.
Jazz heavily relies on improvisation, highlighted in solos. A person who plays in a jazz band can sound entirely different from another person in a band. Everyone has their style.
You know its jazz if it has a "swing" to it and you hear the "blue" notes. Speaking of instruments, it always sounds like one instrument is responding to another. Having a little conversation.
Jazz artists love to play renditions of songs. A popular song might have like 10 different versions.
Historically, Jazz did gain its popularity in New Orleans and formed as a combination of ragtime, blues, and march bands. Jazz itself has its own versions like traditional, swing, bebop, and cool jazz.
The first recordings of Jazz began in the late 1910s, but its predecessor, ragtime, began in 1817 at the Congo Square as the official place for slaves to play music and dance.
youtube
Lets start our journey with Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues" from 1920.
Ooh I can hear the crackle of the recording. Feels very authentic. I can hear the instruments talking with her. I think I hear the clarinet here, its very high pitched and I'm not used to hearing it in jazz. What a good deep voice she has. She's really looking for that man.
The most traditional you can get with Jazz.
A little bit later, we got this absolute classic. "When the Saints Go Marching In." From 1935.
youtube
That man's voice though. Love the gruff and charm to it. He uses a female voice as an instrument. The classic trumpet (solo) is here and it has such nice energy. I love how he says he was happy to have "swung" the song to the audience. The clarinet here makes more sense. This is a iconic set of instruments here.
I feel like I can snap my fingers and "swing" to this song all day.
Now onto a duet from the 1950s!
youtube
This man's voice just, wow.
Okay now this is what think of when I picture Jazz. The light piano, the drum tapping with metal brush, the bass violin. Have you heard the Charlie Brown soundtrack? Sounds exactly like this. Pretty sure this is "cool" jazz.
Finally, we get to one of my favorite Jazz songs. From the 1960s.
youtube
There goes that clarinet and piano again. A bit more instruments in this song. This has that "big brass jazz band" sound- because its exactly what that means. Big band, lots of brass. It's identified by the rising sounds of the brass instruments, usually heightened at the end.
Lets move into the tech future of the 80s and listen to "All I Need is You" by David Sanborn.
youtube
So this is the first Jazz piece so far with no lyrics (Except a few words). People would call this elevator music nowadays. Immediately, I notice a new instrument- synth! That artificial piano with its light airy keys, even the bass sounds very different than previous songs- I think that must be an electric guitar too. Its super airy, and much more higher-pitched than the other songs- its really happy- and feels almost the opposite of cool jazz.
Jazz had been around for so long now. By this time, Jazz had to adapt to keep being relevant. So in response, new technology was used. And man, this fits the 80s so so well.
Lastly, lets finish off by traveling to the 21st century to see what Jazz is today.
youtube
Sound quality is astounding. Her vocals shine here. There are still the same instruments: piano, voice, drums, etc. However, this song is a jazz rendition of "Dreams" from Fleetwood Mac. Jazz renditions are popular in the 21st century, since its hard to come up with something completely original in the jazz style. This album "Beautiful Life," won a GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Everything in this song is so crisp!
Overall, after listening to all these songs- what was lost and retained in the "aura" of Jazz?
I can say that no instrument has really disappeared over the years. Since there are many styles of Jazz, every style calls for different instruments. The back and both conversations between instruments has been mostly retained. In short, we know there is a thread that ties all Jazz together, so not to loose the "aura" so much that we can't call it Jazz anymore.
What might have been lost is certain styles of Jazz, like the "cool" Jazz style or big brass bands, which we didn't see much in the late 20th century. If people want to hear that style of Jazz, any artist can learn the older Jazz songs and play it, as long as the license to play the song is free.
Jazz has always been about improvision, and yes, this means remediation of Jazz songs is bound to happen. But this helps keep Jazz alive.
Jazz is what you- the artist- make of it.
Thank you, for taking this tour with me!

Alright so I may or may not ha e just seen your navigation post and diOaksnsks ma'am you now have yourself a top fan soaowisis anyways, may I request headcanons for Yaku, Kenma, Akaashi, and Sugawara with a same year as them s/o who's part of the music club and the younger members look up to said s/o like a big sister? I wonder how they'd react...
From: The one and only BucketofForks
To: You :DD
okay, this request is sO CUTE!! AHH!! thank you for being my first request and I hope you enjoy it! :)
their musical s/o that acts like a big sibling  to the younger members
sugawara
suga met you after school when he just so happened to walk by the music room on the way to practice.
his ears picking up such a beautiful sound flowing from the cracked open door that his body just seemed to move by itself over there.
through the small window, he could see that someone was obviously practicing the violin. their eyes closed with a pleasant look on their face.
he was mesmerized, his eyes following along with the way their body would sway along to the music and their foot-tapping to keep the rhythm
he couldn’t help himself to push further into the room and clap after they were finished, a bright red blush spreading across your face as you realized someone was watching you
“that was amazing,” suga exclaims, his bright smile livening up the room
“really?” you ask, “I’ve only had the piece a couple of days, but we have a show coming up soon so I want to get it down.”
“well I think you definitely have it down alright, can you play me another?”
yes, he was late to practice that day, but BOOM romance erupted from there.
the first time the boys met you, it was when you walked into the gym to give suga some notes for one of his classes. of course, you walked right into the fifth kageyama and hinata argument of the day.
of course, all of the other boys are tense and not sure how to stop them from bickering but DUN DUN DUN suga’s s/o to the rescue.
“alright, it seems like you two need to sit down and have someone guide this conversation,” you blurted out, everyone’s head snapping towards the unfamiliar voice.
“hey sugar,” suga voiced as he jogs his way over to you, wrapping his arms around you before placing an obnoxious kiss on your cheek, “don’t worry about them, they do this all the time.”
“is that so? well, it seems like they’re holding everyone else up, I’ll sort them out.”
coach ukai is just like please, I’m begging you.
so kageyama and hinata are dragged over to the bleachers where they are scolded by their upperclassman and lead through a very thoughtful and successful conversation
even made them hug it out, which was great blackmail for tsukishima later on.
the boys knew that if you could calm down kageyama and hinata, then you definitely need to stick around.
and you did, in fact becoming very close with them.
you’re seen at every one of their volleyball games, cheering so loudly for the boys (well, mostly suga.)
you probably yell embarrassing things like “SUGA YOUR BUTT LOOKS GREAT.” “HINATA SWEETIE, PULL UP YOUR PANTS.”
the boys are in the front row for every performance you have, asahi has definitely cried once when you had a solo
you’re one of the few people that can pick on tsukishima, and him not having a comeback for it
you walk around and make sure that the boys are eating properly at lunch
you help yachi with breathing exercises when she gets too overwhelmed
you always make sure that they all get big hugs after the games
you tease nishinoya and tanaka by telling them that someone was going to ask kiyoko out today, just to see their reactions
but most importantly, you give them all emotional support when the boys need it the most.
overall, suga’s s/o would be just as chaotic as him. but loves to give them bear hugs, a good scolding, and sneaks them some snacks throughout the day to make sure they have enough energy.
akaashi
akaashi met you during one of fukurodani’s talent shows, hosted by the music club!
you signed up to perform, deciding to play your guitar and sing as well.
akaashi couldn’t take his eyes off of you, his heart fluttering with every note that you would sing.
he loves the way you let yourself get lost in the music even though you’re performing in front of hundreds of people right now.
he had to talk to you, and he gathered up the courage to after the show.
“hey,” he stutters slightly as he approaches you, you’re even more stunning up close, “you did amazing up there.”
“oh gosh,” you laugh slightly covering your red cheeks, since you’ve always had a crush on the observant setter of fukurodani, “you’re too kind, but thank you.”
“would you teach me how to um, play the guitar maybe?” he blushes
you couldn’t believe it, THE akaashi keiji is asking YOU to help him learn how to play guitar? you obviously agreed to it, anything to get close to him
the weekly guitar lessons, turned into weekly dates, that turned into finally becoming significant others.
the first person you meet is bokuto, naturally. he forgot his lunch at home that day and didn’t want to spend money to get something to eat. his hair all frumpy as he goes into emo bokuto.
but lucky for him, you always pack an extra lunch in case one of your friends forget theirs. so you offer it to him, and bokuto looks at you as if you put the stars in the sky. bokuto happily eats your food, complimenting it with every bite. then invites you to come to their practice.
akaashi was nervous to have you come to practice, what if he messes up? what if you think volleyball is lame? what if the boys hate you?
yet when you stepped into the gym, you seemed to fit right in.
you help them set everything up, you get along with yukie and kaori, you compliment bokuto when he seeks your praise, you help toss to konoha, and sneak in little kisses for akaashi
since that day, the team seems to stick to you like glue
they always ask you for help when it comes to studying
you give them little performances during their breaks in practice
you give them head pats and words of encouragement before every game
you even invite them to every single one of your performances, knowing exactly where they in the crowd from bokuto’s prominent voice.
basically, you become the teams' second mom behind akaashi. you support them with motherly love and they support you back by being your number one fan.
kenma
you were a mystery to kenma at first
every day after school, kenma would hear the most beautiful voice singing in the stairwell of the school. yet, he could never see who it was since they left before he reached the bottom.
but one day, he was determined. it was like figuring out who the mysterious voice was that was guiding him in a video game, so he left earlier to wait at the bottom of the stairs. lo and behold, here comes you singing to your heart's content as you descend the stairs.
stopping in the middle of a long note as your eyes land on kenma, sitting on the bottom step looking up at you with a slight smile on his face.
“you have a nice voice,” his soft voice states as your cheeks become redder by the second
“oh, thank you, I don’t really sing in front of others,” you state bashfully
“you should join the music club,” he casually states as he picks up his volleyball bag, “they would accept you right away.” then he walks off, gaming on his phone.
the next week you come racing towards him, a bright smile on your face as you explain to him that you got into the music club.
“but,” you explain as your smile drops, “I still can’t get over the nervousness of singing in front of others.”
“you can start by singing in front of me, if you’d like,” kenma states, his eyes lowered in shyness, “then maybe once you’re comfortable around me, you can work your way up.”
“oh! like leveling up in a video game,” you exclaim.
kenma swears his heart stops for a second at that statement, his cheeks a bright red.
“yeah, exactly like that.”
so every day, either before or after school (depending on his practices) you would sing in front of kenma. while either walking to school or from, eventually kenma couldn’t hold his feelings in any longer and finally asked you on a date. and then you became love birds.
you met the boys by kenma’s idea actually
“you’re comfortable around me, what about we move up to my team?”
you agreed, reluctantly of course. but here you are, in the gym about to sing to a group of boys.
but you put your big kid pants on, and you did it. you ended up making lev cry from how beautiful your voice was, you had to console him with hugs and head pats.
the boys were in awe of not only your talent but the way you just casually hugged lev. soon enough, all of the boys wanted hugs. then they became your little clingy cats.
you had Yamamoto hissing at people in the hallway when they looked at you as if kenma did already do that.
you sang the periodic table song per kuroo’s request
you always listened to lev excitedly explain something and explain something to him if he didn’t understand
when it came to your first ever performance on a stage, the boys sat in the front row so you had familiar faces to look at.
it was at that moment that you would’ve never been where you are without kenma.
yaku
the boys were curious, why has yaku been showing up to practice at the last minute every day?
he would run in, out of breath, with a sappy look on his face.
so, they followed him (as sneakily as lev and Yamamoto would let them) and see what he did after school every day.
that's when they found you and him in the music room, you were playing the piano while GASP, YAKU WAS SINGING?
the boys were astonished, not only because he had this talent and he never told them. but because he has the voice of an angel??
his voice is what made you approach him in the first place, you heard him singing loudly with his headphones in his ears while he walked home from school one day. you just so happened to need a voice to test out the new song you just wrote.
so you asked, well more like begged him. but you were too cute to say no to. you would meet every day after school, he even helped you fix some things for the song. eventually, you two would start hanging together at lunch and even after school. leading you two to start dating.
but now here we are, with all of the nekoma men's volleyball team in too much shock to move as they find their libero singing beautifully in front of them.
oh but don’t worry, lev will say something.
“yaku, you sound like an angel!” he exclaims as he steps into the room.
“LEV?”
“Actually we’re all here.”
“WHAT?”
cue yaku running around the music room to hit each and every single one of them for a. stalking him and b. finding out his secret.
which leads to you introducing yourself, and having another shock to the team as yaku actually has a significant other?
“whaattt?? yaku got someone before me?” kuroo whines as he pouts with his arms crossed. leading you to karate chop him on top of the head, because no one disrespects your mans >:(
that small action would make the team realize that they now had two mothers to yell at them.
and oh boy would you.
you had to scold lev if he would say something mean to other teams (without realizing, he's a precious boy he doesn’t mean any harm)
you drag Yamamoto by the ear when he over girls for too long
you take kenma’s gaming devices so that he eats during lunch
you also scold kuroo every time he hits lev with a ball
but they wouldn’t have it any other way, because they adore you (and you keep yaku calm)
when it finally came to performance time for your song and for yaku’s big singing debut, you wouldn’t want any other team to be in the front row.

8 Songs, 8 People
Rules: answer the 8 prompts and then tag 8 people
thank you @exchangestudentsneedtochill for the tag! (all the underlined titles can be clicked on and listened to!)
1. Favorite song at the moment:
the whole album to Bo Burnham's netflix speciel "Inside" especially "White Woman's Instagram" and "All Eyes on me" completely unrelated favourite songs are also Machine Gun Kelly's lockdown sessions from last year, especially "In These Walls"
2. A song you associate with your favorite ship: i don't really have a "favourite" ship right now, here is a small collection for ships i enjoy tho?
cheesy start: Crowley and Aziraphale - "From Eden" by Hozier
Kaz and Inej - "Anchor" by Novo Amor
and i've already run out of ideas for now
3. A song that could be about you:
before this gets sad: these two, please listen to them 1) "I don't want kids" from Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq. 2) "I've no more ... to give" also from this dapper chap
4. A song you think is overrated:
i can't think of one. i therefore present you a song that is rightfully rated god tier - "Achilles Come Down" by Gang of Youths, it's just beautiful all around.
5. A song that reminds you of a good memory:
"Dancing's Not a Crime" by Panic! At The Disco. Just overall a good time when I listened to that album in 2019 and I went to their liveshow which was lovely too. puts me right back in a good mood even now.
6. The last song you listened to:
before i frantically started looking through my spotify lists for this game? i listened to "Comedy" by Bo Burnham.
7. A song that makes you laugh:
actually, quite a few. i will not link Bo Burnham's special again. Also the older stuff from him. like the country song. also, maybe Twenty One Pilots' "Tear In My Heart" but especially this version featuring Mutemath. You need to watch the video for this too, you'll see.
8. A song you want your mutuals to listen to:
ohhhhh. have i mentioned my recent obsession? aside from that:
"12 Rounds" by Bohnes. it's so good? esp. from 2:17 until the end
"Lemon Boy" by Cavetown
Violin Concerto in D Major by Tchaikovsky, played by Hilary Hahn. This is the first part, which i ADORE. but also listen to the others. And the piano concerto as well.

Naruto Arts School AU
Tumblr media
Reposting bc I love this post and bc I can lol
Character
- major
description
Naruto
-Drums
okie nobody can deny that our main boy over here is a loud soul, however, he can also carry a damn good beat that compliments his band mates’ music really well. Tbh, he sucked at music to begin with and had trouble matching rhythms and listening to his band mates when they played, however he eventually became a really good rhythm maker.
Sasuke
-Guitar (lead)
He’d be assigned to the same band as Naruto, and that’s how they met. This boy is a damn good guitarist y’all, but has attitude problems™, and used to not be able to deal with Naruto’s haphazard beat making, thus perpetuating a rivalry between the two. He constantly feels overshadowed by his elder brother Itachi, a piano major.
Sakura
- Dance
Ya girl fucking demolishes every single dance routine. Initially starting out with a focus on ballet (pre-shippuden in canon), our pink headed queen soon realized that she wasn’t getting the full experience of what it meant to dance. Her point shoes were her loves, however they hurt and nipped in places not just physical. She realized that she didn’t want to be pigeonholed into a genre of which she would be inhibited by standard, and rather to dance so as to forget technical perfection. Thus, what would partner with post-shippuden Sakura in canon, Art School AU Sakura got into hip-hop. And bitch, she goes hard. A lot of the other girls who she used to dance ballet with admire her for her absolutely BODYING her dance routines, but also for never sacrificing her femininity to dance and not taking BS for being a girl who goes so hard in a male-dominated genre. (Some people believe that hip-hop is heavy hitting and a little metaphorically “dark” so to speak, which Sakura is not. So obviously I expect a little disagreement regarding this, however if you look at people like Delaney Glazer or Kaycee Rice, that is how Sakura would dance).
Hinata
- Creative Writing
Shy and bookworm-like, Hinata can write the best poetry, romance and adventure pieces out of all the creative-writing majors. She’s especially good at writing character relationships and development, and has such a subtle sense of intelligent wit in her writing, that if you blinked you would miss it. However should you catch it, you’re sure to chuckle. Her only struggle is that she tends to drag on in important scenes, stretching them against the regular flow of the rest of her writing. Needs validation for her writing through an IV drip.
Kiba
- Drums OR Photography
Drums for obvious reasons (loud and obnoxious), although ruff boi looks good with a camera, too. Great at landscapes and street photography.
Shino
- Creative Writing OR Photography
I could definitely see Shino having fucking beautiful handwriting, and being a beast at writing anything within the sci-fi realm. I could also see him doing some journalism, and writing for the school paper. He’s very good at the logic of his sci-fi books and coming up with logical but enrapturing stories, that intermingle knowledge and mystery. He’s a very specific type of read, however, and may not appeal to all, however if you enjoy anything similar to Star Wars or Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, then Shino is your author. If this doesn’t float your boat, though, try photography-major Shino. He can get the best angles of bugs he sees, and has an extensive portfolio with entomology-related snapshots.
Ino
- Dance
Like Sakura, she, too, began with a focus on ballet, however began to branch out into contemporary ballet a little later than Sakura. This is another reason why Sakura switched her focuses, as she and Ino had always had a fierce rivalry for dieting (ballet dancers are pressured to be as thin as possible) as well as battling for technical perfection when they were ballet focused. As the two grew, Ino focused more so on contemporary, but can certainly do some hip-hop with Sakura every now and then, just as Sakura occasionally takes a contemporary class with her. The two still have a rivalry, however, just not to the previous extent as when they were actively competing against each other. They’re more like sisters.
Shikamaru
- Guitar (bass) OR Creative Writing OR Architecture
Smart boy’s a tricky one. He would either be a bassist, a mystery and historical fiction writer, or, of his school offers it, be great at architecture. Idrk.
Choji
- ermmmmm….. maybe graphic design? Tech theatre (props)? Vocal???
Choji is hARD dwnccnpc (that’s what she said). I could see him behind a computer screen, animating and designing games/covers/posters or whatever. He could also do something in theatre, but I don’t think he would do anything up on stage. Something like props would suit him. He might do something in music, tho???? Can he sing???? Help???
UPDATE: Choji is a band kid. He plays tuba or some shit. Big boy got big lungs.
Tenten
- Dance
Always has been, and always will be a hip-hop dancer. She wanted to be like Tsunade, a legendary dancer and followed in her footsteps, taking up hip-hop. (that’s why Sakura focused on hip-hop, too, because Tsunade mentored her and taught a few of her classes, too). Tenten is fast and can keep up with any beat. Not only is she a great dancer, but she’s also athletic, and does track and field (cross country), football, and softball at another school too, since the arts schools doesn’t offer it. Overall great dancer with styl. She’s really looked up to by some of her underclassmen for her cheery, but badass style and skill.
Lee
- DANCE (hip-hop, too)
It’s sweat. It’s burn. It’s energy. It’s Lee.
Neji
- Violin
First chair violinist in his freshman year for the school’s philharmonic orchestra. He be extra like that.
Gaara
- Guitar (bass)
He had a lonely childhood with neglectful/abusive parents, and rock music really helped him with that. Emo music is emo and often made fun of, but the songs have messages and Gaara related, so self-taught himself the bass guitar to help cope, and bring him closer to the music that salvaged him.
Kankuro
-Art
Specifically sculpting. For obvious reasons.
Temari
- Acting
Girl can make you cry with some of her monologues. Total lead. Has a seriousness in her acting that makes her believable, however can falter on the less-serious roles. She may also double-major in whatever Shikamaru does. And she’s better at it than him.
Itachi
-Piano
Boy could play any etude at age 7. Performed at Carnegie Hall when he was 10. And no, he didn’t pay to play there. The hall invited him. Began composing at 9. Has perfect pitch. Owns international awards. If he’s not at school it’s because he’s traveling to play for crowds. He excels at classical and baroque, however has an ear for romantic, and enjoys playing/composing pieces either written or inspired by romantic pieces. Enjoys Schumann, Debussy, and Tchaikovsky. Hates modern classical music, though. Can only take cinematic pieces composed by people like Williams, however can’t stand Prokofiev at all. He does like modern music, though, so long as it’s outside of the orchestral/classical music realm. He likes R&B. He would have liked to do film with Shisui, particularly producing, however his parents pressure him with piano, so he helps Shisui with student films and projects outside of school (will probably pursue film after graduating, tho).
Shisui
- FILM / VIDEO PRODUCTION
Fight me on this!!! THIS BOY IS SO GOOD AT CINEMATOGRAPHY MY FILMMAKING ASS CAN’T EVEN. AS SOMEONE WHO IS IN LOVE WITH FILMOGRAPHY, TRUST ME, SHISUI HAS IT™. THE IT™. HE’S GOOD AT EVERYTHING. CINEMATOGRAPHY. DIRECTING. SCREENWRITING. GRIP-WORK. EDITING. PRODUCING. HE’S SUCH A FILM NERD TOO, AND WATCHES OLD FILMS ALL THE TIME. HE’S JUST TOO GOOD AT IT. DOES STREET PHOTOGRAPHY TOO. HE’S OVERALL A GENIUS WITH CAMERAS. Does film with Itachi outside of school and teaches him, and the two are overall geniuses at filmography. They want to start their own studio together (they do, and it becomes huge). He becomes a leading director, while Itachi becomes a producer and directs sometimes too.
Sasori, Deidara, and Sai
Guess.
Kakashi
- Saxophone
It’s the only thing that suits him and it suits him so well. Has suave.
Obito (omfg his arms y'all)
- Not to say drums or anything, but…. drums.
Narutard 2.0. But he also dabbles in other areas of music. Like, he can also play guitar and sing. He’s also pretty good at music production. Makes R&B sometimes. He wasn’t always the best musician but proved to be a late bloomer, and really harnessed his potential. Tries to be as suave as Kakashi and his saxophone. He isn’t.
Hashirama
- Vocal
OkaYYYYYY. VOCAL GOD. CAN DO RIFFS AND RUNS AND HAS PERFECT PITCH. ALSO THE SWEETEST GUY??? WAS A CHAMBER SINGER AS A FRESHMAN. EVERYONE LOVES HIM, GOOD BOY ENERGY.
Likes to belt.
Madara
- Piano
Total prodigy, but hates classical music. Once was accompanist to Hashirama for a solo vocal performance and hasn’t been left alone since.
Tobirama
- Viola or Cello
Some sort of string instrument and takes it very seriously. Probably plays cello because violas are violas and that’s lame (if you know, you know). Has almost as many awards as Itachi and Madara, but hates his usual piano accompanist, Izuna.
Izuna
- Piano
Also a piano god. The uchihas breed them. Hates being accompanist for Tobirama. They’re secretly best friends though, don’t tell anyone.
Karin
- Tech Theatre.
Idk why. Probably started out with props and made her way up to TD (technical director) in senior year.
Suigetsu
- Tech Theatre
Fucking hates theatre kids. Assistant TD. Karin hates him.
Jugo
- Visual Art
Paints landscapes and nature. Really good with oils and gouache respectively.
Yamato
- lmao Trumpet.
Met Kakashi since they both play brass, but boy he ain’t got that suave. That’s why he plays trumpet. Lmao he plays the fucking trumpet anjdwcnojdnn.
Rin
- Vocal
Sweetest voice and could also play the acoustic guitar when she sang. Died in a car accident junior year. Kakashi was at the wheel when they got hit by a drunk driver. Obito saw the whole thing.
Kurenai
- Visual Art
Can create dream like paintings that almost seem like illusions.
Asuma
- Cello / guitar
Used to play cello because of his parents, but loves to play guitar. Can sing but his voice is raspy from smoking.
Gai
Who the fuck do you think teaches dance?
Jiraiya
- Guitar (lead)
Used to major in lead guitar. Sucked at first. Probably has a couple, casual Grammy Awards (they’re actually not that hard to be awarded with, The Recording Academy award many people outside of mainstream media. My school has a few). Now teachers as head of the Band department at this school.
Tsunade
-Dance
Legendary dancer. Probably toured with a few famous people. Now teaches. Mentored Sakura, and mentored Ino but for a shorter time.
Orochimaru
- Idk, didgeridoo, or some shit
Definitely a wood wind. Flute maybe??? Teaches now but no one knows what he does. Pedophile. Has a thing for Sasuke.

Ok, then, a post that rates all the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fall themes coming up:  SNES - Actually, I find this song to be a bit annoying. It is too repetitive and too loud. It also didn’t help, that for some reason, SNES didn’t had crops for fall, so that fall was more like a winter where you could collect mushrooms.  GBC - It is the same as with the SNES, but in the Game Boy sound font. It actually is a bit more tolerable like this, but still not much. 64 - Now that’s a good fall theme! The melody is just perfectly aligned with how busy fall is and there is the sense of an underlying hurry in the theme, probably because winter is creeping up. It also sounds like a remix of the SNES fall theme, but one that was done very right.  GBC2 - This one is nice. It tries to get the best out of the limited GBC sound system. It has a very nice melody, a bit melancholy, but overall catchy. If someone would play this with actual instruments, it probably would sound amazing. BTN - One of my favourites actually and not only because I love BTN. The song is just catchy, it goes in your ear and it certainly makes you think of a sunny fall day. It repeats the first notes a few times before changing it a bit and repeating. The low notes in the background really let the song shine and the constant rythm doesn’t make the song boring.  GBC3 - I still can’t find a video which points out which seasonal theme is which, but it is still pretty yikes overall.  AWL - Because of the lack of traditional season themes, we only have the records. The fall theme is a remix of the N64 one. It is still the same awesome melody, just cleaned up and played with different instruments. It sounds really good.  What a bummer you can only get this records by trading with FoMT.  FoMT - The same as BTN, but in the GBA soundfont. It definitely sounds better on the PSX. It is fine for the GBA, but too much chiptune for my taste.  MM - This theme has a bit of music that would play in a lounge. Where you would go and hang out with a fancy cocktail, just relaxing after a hard day of work. The melody is definitely catchy and I enjoy listen to it. The song also is coherent, unlike the winter song, and makes me want to sway to it. Though, I have to admit, MM songs are pretty long, unusual for HM music.  STH - Aw, this theme is fun. It tells you that a busy autumn day lies before you, where you stroll along the leave covered street to town to hold conversations and sell your hard earned produce. All while you sway to the tact of the music.  Sadly, I can’t find the town theme.  DS - Woah! Just woah! This sound starts out with a few very elegant notes and it only gets better. The song is almost creepy in a way, but it is thoroughly beautiful, with a piano melody as the main melody. Always only a few notes, and then they leave room for the background notes, but the song wouldn’t be complete without this three notes.  It definitely is one of my fav fall themes.  HoLV - Oh, that sounds like medieval folk music ^^ It is very cute and catchy, a very cheerful song. Certainly gets you into the mood to work on the fields and harvest your crops.  ToT - Elevator music! That is straight up elevator music! Who composed this song?! The song would probably be higher in my favour if the first part wouldn’t sound so much like elevator music, but the second part is pretty good.  Thanks at jake-marshall for providing a link to the night theme. I agree with them, this one would have been perfect for the day theme. A nice piano in the background and the melody is played with a violin, sounds very much like a chill fall day and more importantly, doesn’t sound like elevator music! IoH - The OST of IoH continues to convince and starts with a cheery little melody, but it very much culminates after a few seconds with a key change, which makes the music sound higher, as if floating in the clouds. Only downside again, it’s too short. AP - This song carries a sense of melancholy, but a good one. The sweet memories of the picnique you had with your crush, thinking about sitting around with your family and talking, thinking about just having dumb fun with your friends. It is a very emotional song, in a good way. A song that warms the heart, a song you want to roast sweet potatoes to.  The night version is a much more calmer version of the day version, with a piano in the background and a flute for the melody. It sounds like it wants to coax you to go into bed.  I defnitely get tired from it.  SI - A nice song, another one that makes you think of a busy autumn day, but the same as the winter theme, it feels a bit not coherent and a bit too chaotic for my taste.  GB - That is a fun fall theme! It starts with a nice little jingle and then changes into the general melody. The jingle continues as the background and the melody gets played with different instruments that complement each other wonderfully. It culminates into a medium fast version and is just fun to listen to.  ToTT - I am not going to lie, this is another one of my favourites. The song just slaps. It makes you think of a busy fall day right away and you just have to sway in the melody, especially when the second part starts.  ANB - Ah, ANB, you are just a source for fun and good music. The autumn theme very much reminds me of HoLV, a very medieval folk sound, with a lot of violins played in that very cheerful matter, ready to harvest the crops to. But the best part is the second part of the song, it is such a nice melody, I want to sway to it.  TLV - I actually rather like this track. It sounds busy and conveys a fall day pretty well. It is also catchy and I remember not getting tired of it when listening to it in game. The melody is coherent and not grating, but it is a bit too short. The night theme sounds like someone put a blanket over the theme, it is very slow and quiet, as if it doesn’t want to disturb the night.  SoS - “You are the ocean’s grey waves.” Wait a moment, Fire Emblem Fates only came out AFTER SoS. Huh, but the melody sounds very very similar to “Lost In Thoughts All Alone”. To be honest, the SoS OST is a bit too generic for my taste, it isn’t too catchy. The Fall theme is the same, only that it sounds so similar to a famous Fire Emblem song makes it stand out.  SoS actually brought the night songs back (I think I forget this in the winter rating list). The night theme is very calm and sounds like someone played the main melody on a harp. It seems to say “good night”.  SV - I can only find a whole video with the OST without time stamps and not the fall theme on its own, so I have to skip on this one.  SoS 3oT - That one is fun. It has this usual busy melody and carries around a certain autumn wind with it. The song starts with a cheery melody and then in its second part gets to a climax.
LoH - What a nice melody. Cheery and playful. It is fun to listen to, but a bit too short. The beath drop after the beginning is done really well though. SoS FoMT - It is again, the same as from BTN, but actually... I prefer the BTN one! The SoS one is a bit too... chiptunes? I guess. I prefer the much more cleaner version we got for the PSX.  This one has an alternate version that plays on the weekends/festival days. I actually really like this one. It is calmer than the usual one and uses a piano for its main melody. It has a very nice section with high notes in the second part of the song.  SoS Doreamon - I actually forgot about this game in winter! But let me make up with the fall theme. I am actually not too sure about it... it sounds fine, but a bit too broken up. It has a bit of a western theme to it also, probably because of the harmonica that is used in the background. It is certainly very calm and relaxing.  If I forget a game or you have a link to the songs I couldn’t find, please tell me.

Stan Talent, Stan Pentagon
Tumblr media
So many reasons to stan Pentagon:
1. Self-Produced
They just have a ton of talented songwriters in here! Cube is popular for self-produced idols after all, like BtoB, another super talented group.
Hui is a composer-producer, not really a secret because he’s well-known as a genius as he also composed hit songs for other popular groups (such as Energetic by Wanna One)
Kino and Wooseok wrote a lot of songs in their albums too, including some of my favorites Spring Snow (Kino) and Nostalgia (Wooseok). Kino also wrote their special single Eternal Flame. Wooseok had a big contribution in writing my absolute favorite, Daisy (but mostly written by Hui), and honestly his songwriting talent seems to be underrated.
Jinho has also composed a few and helped write a lot. Yuto also composed songs (aside from his rap lines), one song being Camella that a lot of “unis” love. *Universe/Unis = fandom name
Both Kino and Yuto have their own soundclouds for the songs they write/produce.
Yeo One composed his own solo songs (yes, even as rookies, they were already composing), and they’re actually so good.
Also, in general, they are so creative in their songs and performances. Example: their Road To Kingdom performances, and also their super fun b-sides like Round 1 and Round 2!
My personal favorites: Obviously the genius Hui, Wooseok (I love him so much!), and Kino (such a talented person)
2. Vocal Kings
Their main vocals (Hui and Jinho) are absolutely top-tier vocalists, two of the strongest ones in the kpop world (imo).
Jinho was LITERALLY a vocal coach of kpop stars. Incredible vocal range.
Their lead vocals Hongseok (actually now a main vocal) and Yeo One are potential main vocals! And their sub-vocals, Kino (honestly surprised he was a sub-vocal cause he’s waaaay too good to be sub!), Yan An and Shinwon, are on par or better than other groups’ lead vocals, imo.
Vocal kings of harmonization. I love it so much, they sound so good! They take after their sunbaes BtoB, the OG harmonization kings. (Song references: You Are, and Shine acapella version).
Wooseok and Yuto’s rap are also so good! Honestly, I go crazy sometimes, especially with Wooseok’s delivery.
Edit, random trivia: I actually found out Wooseok auditioned in Cube as a vocalist and a model. Thank God, he discovered his talent in rapping later on, because dang, this guy is SICK. His rap touches my heart. He is proof that the basis of what a good rapper is doesn’t need to be about how fast you can say your words.
My personal favorites: Hui, Jinho, and Yeo One (what a beautiful voice, and he’s so good and stable live, halp huhu, totally underrated), Wooseok’s rap (I’m a big fan, my eyes are filled with hearts)
3. Musical ability (in general) and Dance
Being composers/producers, they have a good understanding of music theory and techniques, especially for Hui (obviously, the genius), Jinho (as a vocal coach) and Kino (I think).
Musical Instruments: Almost all of them (except for Hongseok) plays musical instruments
Piano: Hui, Jinho, Kino, Shinwon - I have to make a special note here. These guys can really play. They’re not the type to say they play the piano but only press a few chords here and there a bit and sing a song. They play their keys!
Guitar: Yuto (he is really good! he posts electric guitar covers on Twitter), Wooseok, Jinho, Hui, Yeo One, Shinwon
Erhu (Chinese traditional instrument): Yan An - studied it for 10 years. Haha! This is so unique, I’ve never seen him play it, and it’s not exactly a useful instrument to have for kpop music, but I love it!
Edit: I also found out Wooseok can play the violin. Not only that, he’s won a violin competition.. I couldn’t believe it! Violin it’s such a hard instrument. It’s not easy to be good at violin, let alone win a violin competition. Wooseok really surprises me with the musical talent he has sometimes.
Dance: Quite obvious as a kpop idol group, even though admittedly they aren’t exactly the best as a whole group.
But anyway, Kino is the main dancer. (Also known for being such a good dancer of girl group songs. Hihi cute)
Lead dancers: Hui, Yuto, Yeo One
Apparently, Kino is also the choreographer! I think he was the main choreographer for Daisy. (Don’t @ me, I’m not sure. But in general, yes, he does choreograph for the group.)
My personal favorites: Kino, Hui - this also includes stage presence.
4. Visuals
Their official visual is Yan An. (Pentagon is whipped for Yanan, btw.)
Other unofficial visuals, at least in my book: Yuto, Hongseok, Yeo One, Kino (but tbf, as a well-loved idol group, everyone becomes an unofficial visual)
Shinwon was actually a legit model before being an idol, and he became viral for being “the handsome part-timer” at a cafe Exo went to.
Men’s Health Korea models (YES, ACTUAL MEN’S HEALTH COVER BOYS aka gym freaks): Hongseok, Yeo One. *PS: I have a feeling Yuto will also be on there soon, one of these days
Let me just reiterate though that while Hongseok is known for his muscles, he more than his abs. He’s smart, funny, and talented, as you can see in this whole post. So yeah, basically, please don’t objectify him.
My personal favorites: Yuto (the reason why I checked Pentagon out in the first place! my heart went deugun deugun), Hongseok (what a great face, beautiful eyes), Yeo One (cutie), Kino (very very pretty face)
*check ending for gifs/pics*
5. Other talents
Acting
Literally THREE of them are musical theatre actors, and all were actually the main characters in their respective musicals: Jinho (already a theatre sunbae), Hui and Yeo One. Honestly, this shows both acting skills and strong vocal ability. (Imagine the strong vocal ability of the lead vocal, in PTG, Yeo One, a main character of a musical. It gives you an idea of how good the vocal line up is.)
I think some of them had some acting in dramas, like Hongseok and Yeo One
Update: Yanan and Wooseok are also on dramas/will be on dramas now. That makes almost everybody in Pentagon (still waiting for Yuto and Shinwon) an actor.
Another update: Kino is now hosting his second podcast with Dive Studios! :)
Randoms
Hongseok, Jinho and Kino speaks three languages pretty comfortably: Hongseok/Jinho (Korean, English, Chinese), Kino (Korean, English, Japanese) ---not super fluent but able to have good conversations. And foreigners Yanan (Korean, Chinese), and Yuto (Korean, Japanese) are obviously fluent bilinguals.
Kino drew and painted the album art for WE:TH / daisy. He even gifted a painted version to Hui for his studio!
6. Personality
Let me start by saying Pentagon is a crazy group. They aren’t really kids but they are so chaotic. I love that they have no filter!
Even the leader, Hui, who’s not really young, is very chaotic! Hui is actually such a cutie pie. And also so funny, especially in their TMIs
Hongseok is so funny, so witty, and has absolutely no shame. I love it!
Shinwon is very witty, and is known to be the mood-maker of the group.
Yeo One is a little 4D. He’s like a messy kid and sometimes has his own world. :)) An absolute cutie!!!
Kino is the sweetest person ever! He never fails to tell Universe how much he appreciates us.
Jinho is known to be the kind and caring hyung they can depend on.
My personal favorites: Hongseok (hilarious and crazy, has me dying), Hui, Yeo One (ugghhhh super cute personality!), Kino also!!!
Tumblr media
Overall: They have a bunch of all-rounders! (My personal favorite all-rounders: Hui, Kino, and Yeo One) They’re so talented and deserve a lot of recognition and support.
Hui is my bias and my ult, but I can’t decide who’s my next bias.
Update: I think Kino is my next bias, cause he’s just so good, so multi-talented! I can’t with this guy. I’m even considering adding him to my ult list.
But my gosh, Changgu is absolutely adorable. Wooseok talent. Huhu idk if second tier bias or...
***Not to be this obsessive OT10 fan, but I really like Dawn (formerly E’Dawn), so I’m writing his skills as well: Great composer (Shine, one of my faves huhu), such a great Rapper (he gets some amount of hate for his voice, but I actually really like it!), Main Dancer (what a good dancer tbh), and very unique personality. I love him, he’s so talented. (But anyway, even with him gone, Pentagon isn’t lacking! They’re still so great!)

Steven Universe’s Representation and Music: an informal essay
As the first animated Cartoon Network show created entirely by a woman, Steven Universe’s run lasted for five seasons, a movie and a sequel-epilogue series. The show was far from perfect and its fandom wasn’t the best either but there is something so special about a show that followed lesbian space rocks and a young boy saving the world.
More specifically Steven Universe is about a young boy named Steven, who is half-Gem, half-human who protects the town of Beach City from evil. Gems are a kind of alien who take on the form of pastel-coloured women, to better assimilate with the rest of the world.
Rebecca Sugar, the creator, explains her colourful characters in a behind-the-scenes promo:
“I always dreamed of making a show that would have this mix of fantasy and reality. So, I wanted to make these fantasy characters that enjoy being with Steven as much, if not more than they enjoy being fantasy characters. The characters aren’t perfect and that’s what makes them so great.”
Steven’s family are known as the Crystal Gems, a group of rebels who fought against their government thousands of years ago and now live on earth. Steven’s mom, Rose Quartz was at the forefront of the fight, she did extremely terrible things and when she gave up her gem—-so Steven could be born—-she was left unable to form a body ever again. Steven, with only his dad and three alien women, must attempt to fix her messes and deal with the repercussions of his mother’s actions.
One of the main mechanics within the series is known as fusion, in which two or more Gems become a single being who is stronger and more powerful. The fused form takes on the physical, mental and emotional aspects of those who are part of the bond. As mentioned and discussed many times within this blog, fusions are a physical embodiment of different kinds of relationships. And for a show starring a primarily female cast, they do not shy away from using this mechanic to tell queer stories.
So explicitly that in 2018, the show had the first-ever lesbian wedding in a cartoon. Of course, representation wasn’t always as accepted in Steven Universe. Just two years before the big wedding, higher-ups at Cartoon Network told Rebecca Sugar, they not happy with the multiple queer relationships, so much so that they were ready to threaten cancellation.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she expressed:
“If this is going to cost me my show that’s fine because this is a huge injustice and I need to be able to represent myself and my team through this show and anything less would be unfair to my audience.”
Being LGBT herself, identifying as bisexual and non-binary, representation is important to her. For many queer people, especially grown-ups, they hope to see themselves represented in kids’ media today as they never had growing up. They want nothing more for children’s shows to say that being “different” or not fitting in with our heteronormative society is actually normal.
Within Steven Universe, you can find woman-loving-woman relationships, non-binary and intersex characters, woman-loving-non-binary relationships, asexual coded characters and basically every other letter in the acronym.
Rebecca Sugar even acted as the exciting force for LGBT inclusion within Adventure Time, originally working as a writer and storyboard artist before leaving to create her own show. She pushed for making the ex-romantic queer couple to be canonically part of the story and for it to not just coded into the dialogue.
A few years later, she returned to the show, multiple times, to compose over 20 songs that would air over the series 10-year-long run such as, “I’m Just Your Problem” which had lesbian subtext that would be confirmed later.
Some other iconic songs including “Fry Song“, “Remember You“, “Good Little Girl“, “Everything Stays” and even the finale song, “Time Adventure“.
Much like the show as a whole, there is something so special about the music she writes. In total, there were over 160 songs written for the franchise, some being short little tunes, no longer than a minute while others were full-blown musical numbers. No matter, all of them have their place within the show. Often when the character can’t express lines through speech, music is utilized to provide a more raw and poignant portrayal of their emotions.
Why Steven Universe is so widely loved is due to the music, as the overall story is not even close to perfect. Yet, everyone can agree on one thing, the music is unbelievably good. What is interesting is the different styles of melodies and backtracking used in the various songs, even more impressive is that every character has their own instrumental motif.
Steven’s motif is the ukelele as he is often seen playing the instrument himself, performing short little melodies and even writing the in-show version of the theme song. Additionally, Steven’s music uses a large amount of Chiptune synth, electronic music which is created using a programmable sound generator. Both instruments have a very childlike feeling to them, Chiptune especially as it is normally used in video game music like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, one of the main musical inspirations for the show. As Steven is the lead, most of the music has Chiptune somewhere in the score and fun fact, the first song in the show, sung by Steven, “Cookie Cat” was actually written on an old Gameboy.
Amethyst is very loud and fun, her motif is electric drums which is extremely reflective of her character. As she can be angry from convincing herself that she is not good enough to happy and giggling from pranking Steven, her instrument can be used in so many ways as she is not a simple character. No matter what, for the few songs Amethyst has on her own (or in the score), her drums provide such an interesting emotional response to the situation.
Garnet is a fusion, so her motif is actually the combination of two instruments. Ruby is a drumbeat as she is a fiery and loud character, she is chaotic while Sapphire is her opposite. Sapphire is calm and collected, she has ice-related powers and is represented by Synth music. The characters together have a perfect unity, expressed by Garnet’s synth bass sounds, she is the equilibrium of two very contrasting characters. The music associated with Garnet, uses primarily the synth bass but Ruby and Sapphire’s individual instruments can be heard throughout her music. All three instruments are also heavily representative as Garnet’s main dancing style is Hip Hop which clashing with others’ softer dancing styles.
Despite, not being alive during the show, Rose Quartz still has her own musical motif as she plays a large part in Steven’s growth throughout the series. As well as being in many flashbacks, she is represented with strings, more specifically, the violin. Rose’s story is rather sad which quite is visible within her associated music, yet, she was also an extremely powerful character as she led the fight against the Homeworld government. Her strength can be heard with strong uplifts and swells in the music. She is never seen playing an instrument unlike the rest of the main characters but one person who plays hers is Pearl, a character Rose was possibly in love with.
For the complex and beautiful character, Pearl, her motif is classical and swing piano. She is visually represented as a ballerina for a large majority of the series, dressed in a leotard, a small skirt and ballet shoes. Apart from Garnet, she is one of the calmest characters in the show. She is a perfectionist and is knowledgeable on many topics. She has a dark past and her fair share of trauma, all of this is wrapped up in her music. From her traumatic past with Rose Quartz, the violin had been heard throughout her music, yet, when she finally dealt with everything, the violin was lost. Swapped out for a new instrument, a bass guitar which she learned how to play at the end of the series. Pearl is a character who has been through a lot and her music reflects it. As she grew, her music changed with her, becoming her own instead of something built off of Rose’s.
My personal favourite song is “It’s Over Isn’t It?” which is this heartwrenching and emotionally painful ballad sung by a broken woman. Pearl was in love with Steven’s mom. Yet, the feelings were not mutual or at least ended being reciprocated as Rose left her for Greg, Steven’s dad. It hurts because Rose didn’t just leave her, Rose Quartz also passed away. As the song goes:
That they didn’t really matter until you I was fine when you came And we fought like it was all some silly game Over her, who she’d choose After all those years, I never thought I’d lose … You won and she chose you and she loved you and she’s gone It’s over, isn’t it? Why can’t I move on? … Who am I now in this world without her? Petty and dull with the nerve to doubt her What does it matter? It’s already done Now I’ve got to be there for her son
Without Rose, Pearl has lost her place in the world as all she ever knew was her. Yet, now she is left to help raise a half-human baby and go on with her life. It makes it more difficult as this baby is the product of Rose and the man that she left Pearl for.
Pearl doesn’t want to hate Greg, she is angry at him but she doesn’t have hatred towards him. They may not be the best of pals at the start of the series but in the song called “Both of You“ has Steven, finally, begging for Greg and Pearl to just talk to each other.
Why don’t you talk to each other? Why don’t you talk to each other? Just give it a try Why don’t you talk about what happened? … You might not believe it but you got a lot in common, you really do You both love me and I love both of you … I know you both need it Someone who knows what you’re going through
An interesting thing about this song is that Steven is this to them, the person with Rose’s gem is singing to the two people who fought over Rose. It makes me wonder if this could be Rose speaking through Steven to her two loved ones. Whether it is or not, doesn’t really matter to the overall story but it is a fun idea to look at.
Overall, these songs are a literal representation of dealing with ones’ emotions in a healthy way, something that Steven Universe actively tries to teach their younger viewers about.
To say Steven Universe is a good show only for its music would be a false statement, it’s one of the strongest aspects but without the story or the characters, the music would fall flat and not have any of its passion.

RWBY7 Soundtrack
Should I be reviewing/giving my thoughts on the OST when I have plenty of asks in my inbox to answer and have no musical authority at all? No, probably not. Am I doing it anyway? Yes.
This is just going to be in what (I assume) is the track order. Let me know if I miss any; I’m going off a YouTube playlist.
1. Trust Love
Initial thoughts: Eh.
It’s okay. It’s not my favorite opening, that honor goes to When It Falls, but it’s competent. Very optimistic, which is a trend for this volume’s soundtrack despite how dire the tone of the latter half is, so I don’t think it fully fits the volume it opens for, but it’s by no means a bad song. It’s easy to sing along and bop to, just doesn’t seem as impressive as the other opening songs. It feels like a different sort of sound than what RWBY songs have been in the past, which is also a running theme for the OST this volume - new artists singing, a lot of experimentation in the style. That’s not a bad thing; the tracks I like the most on this album are the different sounding ones, but it’s very.... noticeable, and didn’t go in the direction you would think for Atlas.
2. Touch the Sky
Initial Thoughts: Why is the best part of this song the ending?
No, but seriously, that outro is a very different sound to the proceeding song and it’s so good. Other than that, I’ve got questions. Like, whose song is this? I’m leaning towards Team RWBY as a whole, but I’ve seen people suggest it’s Weiss’s, it’s Blake’s, I could see an argument for Yang - it’s very unclear. Also, why is the POV character(s) so happy? Their situation isn’t all that much better in terms of Salem and the Relic and all that; they should still be weighed down with that knowledge, shouldn’t they? They don’t trust Ironwood to help make things all better, they still have to carry the Relic (for plot reasons), the only thing that’s changed is that they’re going out on missions. Well, fresh clothes and a distraction are always nice, and it is a chance to put all that stuff on the back burner. I’ll give them that, then.
3. Brand New Day
Initial Thoughts: From the writers that make every Blake song a duet, here’s her volume 7 song; a duet with.... Qrow?
Have Blake and Qrow ever even spoken to each other? And, is there actually no solo Blake song, or am I beating on a dead meme? Actually, to be completely serious, these two actually work well in a song together. Their character directions compliment each other in this volume - both trying to reinvent themselves some and become better (Blake with her new hair and outfits, Qrow with a new outfit and a resolve to recover from alcoholism), it’s just a shame that, you know, this kind of talk or relationship never happens in the show. At all.
Someone in the YouTube comment section said this song sounds like a 90′s sitcom opening, and I have to agree. It really does, mixed with a bit of 50′s doo-wap. It’s not bad, I actually like the doo-wap, but it also has bits of the usual RWBY style rock, and they don’t mix as coherently as I would like in some places. The guitar bridge after Qrow’s verse is pretty nice, though.
Overall, it’s another good song to bop along to, but like the songs before it, I’m not sure it’s one I’ll be listening to over and over.
4. Let’s Get Real
Initial Thoughts: So, even the song thinks they should talk - why didn’t they?
Here’s something you may not know about me. I don’t romantically ship Renora. I’ve always preferred them as a brother/sister pair - probably in part because I’m a sucker for found family. I’ve never really had anything against romantic Renora, though... but this volume definitely made me go from neutral to dislike. Ren’s confused, he’s worried, he’s having doubts about their relationship that he’s not sure how to vocalize. He admits as much. And instead of, I don’t know, respecting that and letting it be for the moment, or pulling him aside to try and help him talk it through, she... kisses him. Instead of stopping to let them work through where their relationship is at the present (which would be nice, to clue the audience in on what exactly their status is), she pushes their relationship to the next level, presumably. It leaves a very bad taste in my mouth, that Ren’s emotions about his relationship with Nora are just shoved aside and aren’t brought up again. Hopefully it does in the next volume (Nora and Ren are notably split for, like, the first time ever in the Volume 8 preview), but still - I thought Tumblr had decided that “guy shuts a girl up by kissing her” trope was sexist or something - shouldn’t this be similarly scrutinized?
Putting that aside, I actually really really like this. It’s very reminiscent of Shine, but a Renora version; it’s got a great beat, the lyrics do a great job in character insight (something I love from RWBY songs, which are probably why Touch the Sky doesn’t do a lot for me), and it’s just a very fun, peppy song. It also feels very at home in Atlas with it’s more techno-leanings. The ending chorus chant of “Is it love?” is also a nice touch.
5. Celebrate
Initial Thoughts: The better Brand New Day (musically speaking).
And by that I mean, it leans all the way into this different style than the half/half approach Brand New Day did, and it’s all the better for it. Once again, another good dancing song, easy to listen and bop to, but it feels... oddly generic. For one thing, there’s no character tied to it, no character insight - I guess you could make an argument for Robin or the Happy Huntresses, but... not really? For another, while as a song I really enjoy the genre of music, it also makes it feel very much not like a RWBY song (something not helped by name-dropping Vegas). It’s fun, but it doesn’t feel like it adds much to the show.
6. War
Initial Thoughts: Wow, I didn’t think you could make me hate the AceOps fight more, but look at that.
Probably the first RWBY song I just flat out hate, and that’s a crying shame considering the excellent music and vocal performances. Those lyrics, though.  Just - I hate them. I hate them so damn much. I refuse to give this song more than that.
7. Hero
Initial thoughts: Hell yeah hell yeah hell yeah HELL YEAH -
Best song on the album probably. It has all the usual RWBY flare, gives us a great insight into Ironwood’s thoughts and motivations, and is a fantastic performance by Caleb Hyles. The operatic section at the beginning is wonderfully chilling, and the rock section is very epic. 10/10 song even though I’m not rating these.
8. Until the End
Initial thoughts: Time to play “Who does this gorgeous song belong to?”
Actually, I really, really enjoy this song. It’s creepy in its melancholy, but I love it for that. The piano and subtle strings are beautiful, and the way Casey’s voice echoes gives the illusion of solitude in an empty place, perfect for the tone this song conveys.
Now, the matter of whose song it is. The consensus seems to be Ruby and/or Summer, and that’s pretty likely (and letting Ruby actually have a song would be nice). However, I heard a rumor before the album dropped that this was an Ozpin song, and going through it with that lens makes a whole lot of sense - the repeated “I’ll be here until the end”, the constant use of “we”, “our” and other plurals, the lines “ In waves of shame, we’re desperate to make amends / But through a simple soul, we lie complacent” could refer to him lying dormant in Oscar or other souls in the past instead of actively working to defeat Salem, and in the lines “ As light fills my eyes / I’ll picture me beside her / And pray that I’ll inspire”, it could be him thinking of Salem when he dies, and then praying that he’ll be able to inspire others to fight for humanity, for the light.
I could see it either way, honestly, but no matter which it is, I love this song.
9. Fear
Initial thoughts: Fire whoever was in charge of sound mixing, otherwise, not as preachy as I was fearing.
This is actually the first time I’ve listened to this. I was pretty pissed at the ending of the finale so I didn’t stick around for the credits, and hearing that it was called “Fear”, I was not in the mood for more Ironwood bashing or “You’re just as bad as she is if you act in fear” or whatever BS Oscar said. So, yeah, wasn’t looking forward to this track.
Thankfully, though, it was not another War. I actually enjoyed the lyrics, and the music was top-notch. Don’t really have much more to say about it other than it was difficult to hear the lyrics over the music in some places, but that could be a factor of the video I was listening to. All in all, pleasantly surprised.
10. I May Fall (Acoustic)
Initial Thoughts: Can someone tell the Williams that “acoustic” doesn’t always mean “depressing?”
Like, acoustic doesn’t have to be a super slow, piano/strings, somber rendition, right? It’s just the instruments and the singer without any added computer editing/layering/whatever, if I’m not mistaken. That style of acoustic works alright with songs like Time to Say Goodbye, but not so well with more upbeat songs. This version isn’t bad, per se, but I’d like to see an acoustic version more in line with the original.
That aside - the original I May Fall is my favorite RWBY song, bar none. This rendition was always going to be something I liked, and I do appreciate a lot about it. The strings are absolutely beautiful, particularly the cello(? I think, again, I’m not much of a music person, just have a sister that plays violin), and I love the way the violin/viola picks up for the second verse and gives the song a second wind, implying more strength and resolve. I love the music cutting out completely to let Casey sing, with the instruments slowly coming in to join as she gets louder and stronger, as if standing with her - beautiful, it’s all insanely beautiful, and this is one I will probably buy.
Closing Thoughts
This album was... average, to me. Only a couple songs really jumped out at me, while most were good, but not something I was dying to listen to again, or were dragged down by the context.
What’re your thoughts on this volume’s songs? I’d love to hear them! Until then, have a good evening, and stay safe!

“I’ve been dying to find out the hard way” idk but this lyric SLAPS
“I’ll burn that bridge when I get to it” (KILLER PIANO ENTERS)
8/10 to my playlist thing song goes
- Razzle Dazzle from Chicago
I’ve never listened to Chicago so here we go
Janus loves Jazz TM
“How can they see with sequence in their eyes?” ooooo
“Razzle Dazzle them and they’ll beg ya for more”
why does this seem like Janus telling Virgil he’s tricking everyone else with a friendly disguise?
I’m pretty sure this song is about prostitution
I know this song is supposed to be about disguising bland things with stupid amounts of show, but it gives off the vibe Janus is horny
6/10 just because I thought the song was SUPER repetitive
- Into the Unknown by the Blasting Company
I see over the garden wall (but I never watched it)
Same vibes as Come Little Children
“All that is lost is revealed” OOOO
Singer has rich voice I love it
7/10 I wanted more
- Don’t Tell Mama from Cabaret
Why do I get poor unfortunate souls vibes?
Song about lying about where you are (What Janus thinks Virgil is thinking?)
“I'm breaking every promise that I gave her, so won't you kindly do a girl a great big favor?” Major betrayal vibes
Lying to eachother is a big theme in this song
9/10 TO MY PLAYLIST YOU GO
- It Seemed The Better Way by Leonard Cohen
Again: evil vibes
DEEP VOICES
“Sounded like the truth, seemed the better way. Sounded like tha truth, but it’s not the truth today.” DAMN
This is more on the lying side of Janus
Violins are GOD TIER
7/10 I love the OoooOOOoooo-ing
- Talking at the Same Time by Tom Waits
Jazz Boys Assemble
Subtle trumpets, good beat
Again: MAJOR SvS REDUX VIBES
Kind of silent drunk ranting vibes
“You got to build your nest high enough to ride out the flood”
8/10 voice is annoying at points but it works well
- Anywhere by the Scarring Party
MORE JAZZ!!!! (Kind of Hadestown vibes)
I can’t understand the singer but it’s fun
Lots of dramas and flair
5/10 I couldn’t understand, but the music slapped
- Change by Lana Del Rey
I’ve never listened to a single Lana Del Rey song so this will be fun
Angst-y
“I’ve been thinking it’s just someone else’s job to care, but who am I? To try?” JANUS STOP BREAKING MY HEART
“Change is a powerful thing, I feel a coming in me.”
Janus would most likely try learning this song on piano
ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING HOLY SHIT
9/10 Haunting, and I love it
- As Far as I Can See by Phantogram
Jazz/Techo? Hell yeah.
I really can’t tell if my phone is glitching of if it’s this song
“As far as I can see, nobody loves me. As far as I can tell, nobody loves you either.” OOP
“As far as I can see, nobody’s listening. As far as I can tell, nobody’s listening to me” SvS VIBES
7/10 confusing but catchy
- I Put a Spell On You by Nina Simone
afsgafafsha JANUS IS A HOCAS POCUS FAN
Jazz Vibes, I love her voice
“You know I can’t stand it, you’re running around” VIRGIL ANGST
6/10 I NEED MORE
- All the Good Girls Go to Hell by Billie Ellish
Fun Fact: I thought Billie was a male white 33 year old country singer until I heard this song a couple of months ago
“Once you get inside em, got friends but can’t invite em.” JANUS AND REMUS BEING CAST AWAY BY EVERY OTHER SIDE
“When the water starts to rise, and heaven’s out of sight, she’ll want the devil on her team” SvS REDUX VIBESSSSSS
“You’re cover up, is caving in, man is such a fool why are we saving him? Poisioning themselves now. Begging for our help? Wow.” I JUST ASDFGHJKL
10/10 I love this song for Janus, and I just love this song in general
- Evil Night Together by Jill Tracy
Man Janus just loves those jazz songs
Evil voices? We love it
“Let sway away the hours, let’s spend an evil night together” Janus, I just- I- why is he horny
“Who’s gonna make you a hero? Who’s gonna blow you away?” BETRAYAL VIBES
I just LOVE HOW THE MUSIC BUILDS TENSION
7/10 gets repetitive at the end, but I love this song
- Bladk Hole Sun from Scott Brandlee’s Post Modern Jukebox
Oooo is this jazz or classical
It’s jazz
Her voice is so beautiful
“Black Hole Sun, won’t you come, and wash away the rain?”
More major keys then other songs
INSTRAMENTAL SLAPS
10/10 I have no criticisms
- When the Chips are Down from Hadestown
Asdfashdhahesksksk I KNEW HADESTOWN WOULD BE HERE
Very different from the broadway version in voices, but I think it works for Janus
PIANO BREAK (jams)
“Aim for the heart, shoot to kill, if you don’t do it then the other one will” VIRGIL
“The first shall be first, and the last shall be last. Cast your eyes to heaven: you get a knife in the BACK”
8/10 I love this song but the voices don’t do it for me
- Devil in the Details by Bright Eyes
The voice? SLAPS
“Now you have your cake, don’t hesitate. Come on just do it.”
“There’s no backing out. This is gonna be reality, you can never dream it down.” DAMN
The strings? SLAPS
Angst TM
The guitar? SLAPS
“If there’s still time to turn around, I’m going too” SvS REDUX!!! VIBES!!!
Another 10/10
- Criminal by Fiona Apple
Evil jazzzzzzzz
“When a girl will break a boy just because she can”
Her voice is amazing, and it works well with the tone
“I got a lot to loose, and I’m betting high, so I’m begging you.” SvS vibes!!! (Not redux tho)
I really think Thomas, Joan, and Tayln knew what the fuck they were doing with this song and causing chaos with the Janus and Virgil shippers (yes they exist)
7/10 the ending wanted to be a fade out but it didn’t really work
- Trust in Me from the Jungle Book
Oh Jesus
Ooo opening just BURSTS through the door
Scarlett Johansson didn’t have to go this smooth but she did and I love her for it
MORE EVIL JAZZ
I like this take on the song, gives it more evil mom energy
10/10 I just- amazing
And that’s the end, Janus’ playlist overall is a 8/10

Folklore is truly Taylor’s best album she’s ever done ❤️❤️
The production and instrumentation is incredible thanks to The National’s Aaron Dressner, William Bowery (whoever he is) and of course Jack Antonoff with Taylor also taking part as well. This definitely is a “back to her roots” kind of album she’s experimenting with indie alternative & folk while returning to form in the genre where she got her start in the industry: country music while also adding some pop elements here and there in more of the indie pop vein.
Taylor said that this album is about all her “Whims, fears, dreams and musings” and you can tell in the production and writing It has a very peaceful soothing vibe to it like walking into an enchanted forest or walking trail with songs like the lead single Cardigan (which has an amazing music video to boot), August, Seven, Exile (with the amazing Bon Iver who has an excellent performance both vocally and in the writing), The 1 & Peace. There’s lots of very excellent instrumentation with lots of piano and acoustic and electric guitar, violin, strings and even harmonica and Taylor’s vocals are so soft and warm and just incredible.
The best part tho is the songwriting which is honestly Taylor’s best she’s ever done. Lover really showed some of Taylor’s best written songs since Speak Now & Red and Folklore takes the songwriting much much further to the point of storytelling and poetry like in songs like The Last Great American Dynasty which is about a real life wealthy woman named Rebekah Harkness who had a reputation and threw a lot of lavish parties in what is now Taylor’s Rhode Island mansion and also the love triangle trilogy of Cardigan, August & Betty which is told from three different perspectives and the solely Taylor written My Tears Ricochet which is about a lost romance But anyways the songwriting is just top notch perfection.
Overall Folklore is a true indie pop masterpiece work of art ❤️❤️ It’s peaceful, relaxing and at points hauntingly beautiful And I know it’s gonna be a critical darling and will definitely be another huge success for Taylor be sure to check out if you haven’t you won’t regret it 😊😊
My faves include: August, Cardigan, The 1, Seven, Mad Woman, My Tears Ricochet, Mirrorball, Betty & The Last Great American Dynasty but the whole album is amazing start to finish ❤️❤️
@taylorswift ❤️❤️

note: i found the breakers somewhere here in tumblr but i forgot who the owner is, so full credits to whoever owns these breakers
Tumblr media
ONE
tell me the first song that made you stan your current fave group and why did your faves attract you so much?
of course it’s their debut song Crown. I have to admit, I listened to them not because i discovered them but because of the whole “bighit is releasing another boy group” fiasco. people thought the hype would die down, i did too, but to this day the boys never failed me. they consistently made me happy with the content they gave out for everyone to enjoy. also adding, i think i’m attracted to them more (compared to their seniors) since they’re around my age– something in which i feel like i can relate to (in terms of the content they put out, or the jokes, etc)
Tumblr media
TWO
rule: answer the ten questions and write your own!
what’s your unrealistic goal for life?
becoming a music artist (pop star) 😔
if you had known that we would be in a global pandemic, what’s one thing that you would’ve done before things shut down (if they have for you)?
travel to Japan and explore the place 😩
what’s an unconventional thing that you carry around with you when you go out?
chopsticks hahahahaha because i usually eat using the spoon and fork when i eat out
favourite type of plushies and why?
anything twotuckgom related! they’re so soft and convenient because of the size. i also kinda wanna buy the bolsters 👀
favourite song right now?
i don’t have any but if you ask what i’ve been jamming to i’d say its city girls by chris brown
something that you’ve always wanted to learn?
producing music, japanese, korean, hacking
tell a funny story about yourself (or just something that you’ve witnessed)
so in the city where i live, there are places in which the canals don’t have any stoppers. i saw this kid walking with his family alongside these canals and he was just vibing with the song he was singing to. he was so into the song he was singing that he missed a step and he kinda slipped and fell in to the canal (don’t worry though there weren’t any serious injuries) and i swear it was a funny sight
headphones or speakers? why?
headphones! when the opportunity is present then i’d listen to my music with no outside noise
craving any food right now? what are you craving?
corndogs 👀
which music streaming platform do you prefer? why?
spotify since i’m on spotify family
😌✌️
questions from eri to me:
what’s the best trip/vacation you’ve ever had?
the vacation i had in Japan last year! 10 days never felt so short in my life and i was planning to go back earlier this year but you know...’rona....
do you have any random fears/phobias? if yes, what are they?
i’m the toughest gal everyone knows but i get really creeped out by butterflies or bugs. i also get scared with inanimate objects that look like a human being when it’s laying still in the dark, i’m scared of mirrors as well HAHA.
weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?
worms
do you have any hidden talents? what can you do?
i can curl my tongue into what seems to resemble a three-leafed clover. i can also mimic voices well and, from what my friends said, i could actually dance well and im super fast in picking up choreography hahaha (ok but it’s what they said okay)
what is an activity you’d like to try out someday?
biking/hiking/camping :>
when did you get your first phone and what type of phone was it?
i think it was back in 4th grade and it was the famous nokia 3310
what is a movie you never get tired of watching?
flipped!
biggest pet peeve?
i absolutely get annoyed when someone tries to rush me and by the time i’m ready, they haven’t readied themselves
earliest childhood memory?
i put sand in this ice-cream-cone-looking rock, and i ate the sand thinking it tasted like ice cream
as a child, what did you want to be? what about now?
a music artist (pop star), until now that’s still my dream but unfortunately, i had to be “practical”
✌️😌
questions from me to you:
android or apple? why?
words of affirmation or physical affection? why?
bean bag or rocking chair? why?
do you view a half-filled glass as half-full or half-empty or an in-between? why? (go as deep as you can)
if someone were to grant your wish right now, what would it be and why?
if someone were to give you anything you want right now, what would it be and why? (something that can be held)
favorite season and why
what made you enter tumblr?
are you happy with where you are in life right now? why or why not?
to see the boys in real life but for it to happen only once in your lifetime, or to meet the boys via online fan meeting as many times as you can in your lifetime? why?
