Ah…thanks for the info. The standard in my country is betwen 4.5-5 in the morning to 5-4 in the afternoon. And then a break followed by labs until late into the evening. 6 days a week. And we dont get paid. Hm. I always thought i might be a whiny baby for it, because i always swung between the same, like, five sites, and they all had more or less this schedule, but i find it rather physically demanding, because we also get very few physical aid items (i got bad bones) and like no toilets, no water, food that is not nutritious, and stuff. You basically have to provide for yourself, the accommodations are not very comfortable, and whenever you make a request of something that you truly need for your health/would increase your work efficiency, you get treated like youre insane for considering it in the first place.

I guess thats the MO when you’re a student and need the experience for a chance at employment. I guess ill move to the US lol

That sounds... not great. However, I would caution you from thinking it's necessarily any better over here. While there are certainly outstanding dig supervisors who prioritize their archaeologists' safety and time, there are also many who fit the profile you described. CRM in the United States is notoriously demanding at the expense of safety. Someone died in 2022, and heatstroke/exhaustion is common. Companies expose people to chemicals and other toxic contaminants.

Students at digs often get the short end of the stick, and have different legal protections than paid employees. Ableism is rampant, as it unfortunately tends to be in fields that revolve around manual labor. I personally have transitioned to more lab-based archaeology for that reason.

You are not a whiny baby—everybody deserves to have their safety be a priority and be compensated for their time. It's my sincere hope that archaeology as a field can start reckoning with its harmful practices and cowboy culture.

Also what if I said the show taking time to show that Luz and Hunter aren't unhealthily dependent on one another post time skip the way they were in thanks to them (but still close seen in Luz's patches on her clothes or Hunter taking time off work to go to Luz's bday) actually plays in to the cycle of sibling betrayal motif w/ the Clawthornes and Wittebanes????

One thing I really dislike when reading posts is when people state something as fact when it's hearsay at best. "Furina was the first person to receive a vision from Neuvillette." "Arlecchino gets rid of orphans that aren't good enough to become child soldiers."

If something is implied, say it's an implication. If something is assumed, say it is an assumption. Even if someone is guilty by association doesn't necessarily mean they do it themselves. Don't pass things as fact unless it's explicitly stated, no matter how much it sounds like it could be true.

It's such a tiny innocuous thing that really doesn't matter, but I feel like calling duel monsters a children's card game (when it's fundamentally baked into everyday life, and your social existence is judged by what you play and how you play it so very intensely, for everyone in-universe) is an absolute injustice to what it is for that universe of people.

on a positive note it's the first night in my uni house with all 6 friends here, i'm so excited to spend the next 2 years cooking next to each other and filling the kettle for all of us and deciding which hand soap to get for the bathrooms and asking if we've locked the front door and checking the water meter it's going to be so much fun

Had a mouse sighting tonight, confirms why Rocket was climbing up onto my desk (a place she rarely goes) to stare at the ceiling and why she had all kinds of dust on her face earlier today.

It's way too late in the night to do anything about it tonight naturally so tomorrow when we go to the post office we'll pick up some mouse traps and finally* go around the house to plug up any holes in the siding and so on.

*we've all been sick with Covid, the original plan was to have that done a few weeks ago but here we are with what we've got

Help Bilal's Family Survive!

After Bilal @bilal-salah0 reached his goal on August 1st, he contacted me to let me know that, because the Rafah crossing is still bombed and closed, he can't actually use the funds to evacuate his family right away. The funds have since been redirected toward the skyrocketing cost of living in Gaza.

His family now has to raise another €30,000 as soon as possible to sustain themselves before the Rafah crossing opens, which could be as soon as next week for all we know.

My post celebrating Bilal getting close to his original GFM goal has over 7,000 notes, yet Bilal is only bringing in €20 every hour or so, which is a sharp decline from his previous momentum.

Bilal is still struggling with his own housing insecurity in Germany and the looming threat of deportation. Despite this horror, he's put the work in to vet a handful of fundraisers, promote fundraisers, and call out scams for us. He is simply too busy to campaign for his family on his own.

I encourage everyone to donate to Bilal's family and share his campaign with people you know on other social media platforms. You can repost any of the art people have made for him and share the pictures on his gofundme.

Bilal is a valuable member of our community! Please don't let him fall through the cracks!
