Review quotes of Booboo Stewart’s performance in Let Him Go

Okay, yeah, so I totally checked over 100 reviews of Let Him Go just to see what they had to say about Booboo Stewart. Relevant quotes under the cut, but let’s just summarize first:

Apparently the film starts out as a slow drama and ends up as a bloody revenge flick, which means that there are some reviewers who go “it takes forever to get started, but once it does it’s great!” and other reviewers who go “it started out really nice, but wtf was that ending?”

Likewise, Booboo has a small role, and there are some reviewers who go “what was even the point of that character?” and others who go “I wanted the whole movie to be about that character!” Also plenty who don’t mention him at all.

The important bit: while I have seen some criticism of the writing of his character, I have not seen a single reviewer criticize his acting. Everyone who mentions his acting is praising it.

Best known for playing Seth Clearwater in The Twilight Saga, Stewart shows nice depth here as a peaceful drifter who helps George and Margaret pull off a hard-fought family reunion. (Collider)

I definitely want to give props to Booboo Stewart, who played Peter. If I'm being honest, I would have loved to have seen a movie just based on his upbringing. I thought that that young man, Booboo Stewart as Peter in this film, kind of this outcast in a sense, hearing his story was so tragic, and again, I would have loved to dug deeper into that, but man, this guy did a really good job in the little bit of scenes that we spent with him, and the scenes that he shared with Diane Lane I thought had a lot of emotional impact, and I thought he did a really good job in this movie as well. Booboo Stewart does a solid enough job at offering a sympathetic new take on typically well-worn character tropes. (comingsoon.net)

In the supporting cast, Carter is fine, but Stewart invests greater poignancy into Peter, a young man robbed of his birthright but retaining the nobility it confers on him. (One Guy's Opinion)

Booboo Stewart also has a nice role as a local Native American escapee of a residential school, who helps the older couple in their quest, but has enough agency to know the two are pushing things way too far with the Weboy clan. (Joblo)

Choosing a Chastity Cage

FLR Tips is the sister site to FLR Info, where you’ll find introductory information about Female-Led Relationships. If you’re new to this, you should head over there. This site is about the practical, day-to-day aspects of FLRs. It is much more explicit and quite sex/femdom-oriented.

By making your man wear a chastity cage 24/7, you can control his erections and orgasms.

Stated matter-of-factly like that, it doesn’t sound like a big deal, but make no mistake - it is! Not only do you control his erections and orgasms, but he’ll be walking around with a constant reminder of your special arrangement, which goes a long way towards fulfilling his need for the arrangment to be rooted in something sexual and kinky.

In fact, I believe many FLR-leaning couples could simply add a constantly worn chastity device to their relationship and reap 90% of the benefits of a more elaborate FLR setup. The man gets his kink while at the same time building up his desire to serve, and the women gets her worshipping/pampering/sexual attention, without the ups and downs that comes with a man who can decide for himself when to become erect or have an orgasm.

But all of this hinges on the requirement that the man must wear the device constantly. Whenever you aren’t actively using his penis for something, it is securely locked away. In order to do this successfully, you’ll need a cage that works well with long-time wear, and that’s what the rest of this article is about.

There are several factors you’ll need to consider when choosing a cage. Let’s go over them one by one.

Size

Men and their penises come in many different sizes, and you should choose a cage that fits your particular man. But what, exactly, makes a chastity cage fit?

In our experience, the most important factor when it comes to size, is that the part of the cage that holds the penis itself should be pretty short, so that even when his penis is in its most shriveled-up state, the tip of the penis will almost never have any clearance with respect to the tip of the cage - there should be contact at all times.

There are several reasons why this is a good thing. The most important one is that it makes night-time erections less painful. Somewhat unintuitively, the less room his penis has to grow, the less it hurts. When he can’t even get semi-erect, it prevents the cage from pulling too hard on his testicles (which is what causes the most pain).

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the thought of him having some discomfort during the night, while I am sleeping like a baby after receiving my massages and orgasm(s) for the night. Even a small cage hurts a little, especially in the beginning, but not to the point that it causes a real issue. I want my husband to sleep well too, for the most part - it’s important for his long-term health.

Another reason we like a small cage is that it really does prevent him from getting an erection. It’s not just a slightly crippled erection that hurts in that good way - there is no erection, period. He’ll swell up, of course, and push the cage away from his body a little, but that’s it. And we enjoy the fact that the control I assert over his erections is real.

Finally, a small cage is easier to hide under clothes, especially if you get one with an integrated locking mechanism (ie. no padlock required), which I highly recommend.

Material

Chastity cages typically come in three materials: Plastic, silicone and metal.

My distinct impression is that most people start out with a cage made of plastic. For the most part, they work really well as far as restricting the penis goes, and they are excellent starter cages to get a sense of how it feels to have one’s penis locked away, or how it feels to hold the keys to a man’s penis. And if you just want a chastity cage that you can use as a fun sex toy, they do the job admirably.

BUT, I do not want you trying to establish a long-term chastity regiment using a plastic cage. You see, the thing about plastic cages is that they are terribly unhygienic, in our opinion. After just half a day or so they’ll acquire an unpleasant odour, and they are notoriously hard to clean without being removed, which makes them simply unsuitable for our purposes.

Luckily, there’s a simple solution: Metal cages. I don’t know the chemistry behind it, but metal cages just don’t have any issues in this regard. And they are typically much more open, so my husband simply cleans the cage and its penile occupant every night with soap and water, while remaining locked, and it works like a charm. Both the cage and his penis dry up within minutes, with no moisture trapped inside the cage.

Not only that, but aesthetically speaking, metal cages are the only ones that work for me. They look masculine and shiny and incredibly solid (which they are), not to mention that they feel much better to touch and play with.

We have very little experience with the silicone ones, to be honest, and a big part of the reason is that they just seem too flimsy, too flexible. I’m sure they work for some people, but our tastes lie elsewhere.

So, metal it is. I’m sure you’ll find people who use plastic cages for long-term chastity with no issues, but this was pretty clear-cut for us. We moved on from plastic very quickly and haven’t looked back (or even sideways).

Security

By “security”, I mean the ability of a cage to ensure that the man is not able to free or stimulate his penis. The importance of this particular parameter probably varies wildly from couple to couple.

For us, it isn’t terribly important. I can certainly see the appeal in having a 100% secure cage, but not if it complicates things in any way.

Most regular cages can be escaped from. It might not be easy, and it might hurt quite a bit, but most determined men can find a way to pull their penis out and do the deed. It might be very difficult to put it back in without the key, though, so those who hope to be able to slip it out at their convenience and then put it back unnoticed may be in for a surprise. But frustrated men are resourceful, if anything, so I’m sure there are those who can do that successfully too.

It boils down to trust and intent. If the cage is intended to be a tool to help you as a couple to achieve the amazing life hack that a successful FLR relationship is, then the hoops he would have to jump through to free his penis without the key should be enough to remind him that he is not supposed to do that, and continuing on that path could easily end up damaging the relationship - not because chastity is important in itself, but because it is a violation of trust, which is bad for any relationship.

It’s very simple in our relationship: By mutual understanding, any attempt to escape or cheat when the cage is locked means jeopardizing the entire FLR part of the relationship. Others might have a more playful attitude towards this, maybe even develop it into a sort of cat-and-mouse game where he is always trying to escape and she is always trying to come up with ever more secure cages. That’s fine, of course, but not for us.

So why not dispense with the cage altogether, if it’s based on trust anyway? Many reasons! It’s not all based on trust, there is a real barrier to cross to be able to circumvent the cage. And even the most devoted man cannot just decide to never have erections, simply to please his woman. Not to mention the joy of having an actual, physical cage and an actual, physical key, that, for the most part, work exactly as intended. We get a lot of pleasure from the chastity cage.

If security is very important to you, and you are not afraid to take things pretty far, you should do some research on urethra cages and/or Prince Albert piercings and cages that are designed to integrate with them. I’ve also been told that there are outfits that make custom-built cages that can be very secure. These apparantly cost several hundred or even thousands of USD, but go nuts if that’s your thing!

Other considerations

Price is obviously a factor for many people. A quality metal cage actually costs less than many of the plastic ones, typically in the range of 25-50 USD.

Where to get one? We have bought all our cages from an online store with the rather silly name Toys 4 Naughty Boys in the UK. Another company with a very nice selection is the US-based Lock The Cock, which also has a presence in Europe.

And, since I have already gotten this question many times, the cage we currently rely on for day-to-day use is the Tight Squeeze III.

Maggie is very reasonable with Scott about the conditions for seeing Cassie; it’s refreshing to not have this played as ‘harpy ex-wife refuses to let man see his child because she’s just the worst!’ Maggie has a child to look after - and has been doing so for years now while Scott was in jail - and she has every right to impose rules on how things proceed, Scott doesn’t get to just march in and have things his way ‘because she’s my daughter!’ Children are not possessions or status symbols, and this movie does a nice job of recognising that and having the adult characters recognise that and behave in reasonable and understanding ways for Cassie’s benefit rather than their own egos. Other films should take note. Also, real people.

Turning lambs into goo is worse than kicking puppies. What a monster.

They do a pretty solid job with the reason for Hope not being allowed to don the suit instead. It has strong potential for seeming like flat-out sexism, the idea that a woman can’t get the job done (in universe) and that a female hero won’t sell (out universe), and while that may indeed still be the core reason, they still pull off the reasoning as if it’s genuine.

Pym’s excuse for why he never told Hope the truth about her mother’s death, on the other hand, is pretty fuckin’ weak. Tell people to stop pretending ‘I was trying to protect you’ is a reasonable explanation for lies. It’s super-high - easily Top 5 - on my list of Worst and Most Tedious Cliche Lines.

Kurt suggests that the suit is the work of gypsies and it’s...not the best line they could have picked. Something less racist instead, maybe? No?

Cross is really fixated on Pym as a father figure. It’s different. I like different.

“That’s a messed-up looking dog.”

Scott and Paxton making peace is so great. Paxton peeing in all the corners and Scott being all jealous and threatened by Paxton ‘usurping his place in the family’ would have been such a predictable cliche for them to use, and this very palatable mature adult behaviour is sooo much better. This is how you stop normalising petty possessive rivalries.

Luis is magical, and also, mad cultured. I love it, but I love even more that they don’t hang a lantern on it, they just let it be part of his character.

Ok, I confess, this is probably gonna be a weird sort of meandering review, because I’ve had this post sitting in my drafts for two months gathering dust while I deal with the mental and physical fatigue of the first trimester of a pregnancy (it’s FUN), and now the due date for this post (pun definitely intended) is right on the horizon, so...I’m just gonna get it done, and it’ll be whatever the heck it is in the end. This is not a complex film filled with deep nuance, it’s basically just an action-y heist movie with some hand-waved scifi on top. And there’s ants. It’s not a hard film to talk about, so you’ll excuse me if it doesn’t get my very best effort. I’m kinda busy growing a human over here.

I remember a lot of grumbling and even some outrage in fandom, back when this film was announced; a lot of people upset that the MCU was bringing in a comparatively little-known and perhaps little-loved superhero like Ant-Man when they still hadn’t bothered with a single female-led film yet, and various complaints about the problematic nature of the Ant-Man character from the comics (referring, I believe, to the Hank Pym version). And then, of course, there was the doubt about whether or not an Ant-Man story was just a fucking idiotic idea in the first place, what with the questionable application of science and the even more questionable appeal of a tiny little man running around playing with ants. Expectations were not high. And yet, Ant-Man pulls through, not just with a great fun romp, but with what I consider one of the more entertaining films the MCU has churned out to date.

I have made my fair share of sour comments about previous films in the MCU and their unimaginative paint-by-numbers plots, and so what I’d like to talk about with Ant-Man is how it manages to be such a success to me despite an essentially uncomplicated story that follows a predictable narrative arc the likes of which we’ve all seen a hundred times before. The basic tenets of a heist movie are all there; the basic tenets of a good vs evil story play straight, alongside a low-key but typical redemption plot, and some plight-of-the-regular-guy vs corporate greed and warmongering, and the leading man hooks up with the leading lady in the end and proves himself as a hero to his family and all that jazz. We know every one of these story and character beats. So. Why do they work?

Let me back this up a second to talk about a couple of major-league pet peeves of mine, the one a microcosmic version of the other: firstly, when people say ‘all Marvel films are basically the same’, and secondly, the Advanced Level Faux-Intellectual Douche version of that sentiment, when people declare that ‘there’s no such thing as originality anymore! There are only seven types of story in the world anyway! Everything is derivative!’ It’s an obnoxious absence of a viewpoint that betrays a lack of imagination and a use of such broad-strokes surface-level comprehension as to be essentially meaningless. Sure, if you break down story concepts to their most fundamental core drives, you can summarise their arcs in a relatively small number of ways, and familiarity with these core concepts can provide a degree of predictability in the way things play out. But that doesn’t mean that every single version of, say, the classic Hero’s Journey is the same damn story, and therefore a useless derivation from which no entertainment or message can be gleaned. If someone asks you to tell them the plot of a movie and you just go ‘oh, it’s a Hero’s Journey’ and leave it at that, you’ve told them almost nothing about what to actually expect. The Matrix is a very, very different Hero’s Journey to The Lord of the Rings, which is a very different Hero’s Journey to Finding Nemo, which is not at all the same as Iron Man. And which of them is closest to The Odyssey, anyway? One of the most obvious differences with all of those examples is genre, and the traditional trappings which often (but not always) follow from them. Sure, the MCU films tend to all fit superhero-comic genre conventions, and some of them (particularly origin stories, as with Iron Man and Thor) may employ a lot of the same tropes while they’re at it. But does anyone really, genuinely think that Ant-Man is ‘basically the same’ as Captain America: The First Avenger? Is Guardians of the Galaxy almost indistinguishable from Black Panther? Does anyone who says ‘Marvel movies are all basically the same’ actually believe the words out of their own mouth, or do they just hope it makes them sound smart if they imply that they’re ‘above’ enjoying mainstream popcorn action?

All of this is to say, what makes Ant-Man work where other trope-heavy films fall apart? The same thing that makes literally any story ever work, and be worthwhile, whether it ‘breaks barriers’ or ‘teaches something’ or is considered ‘high art’ or not: details. Some films are too light on details, which makes them boring because they never really bother to build anything on top of those core foundations we know so well. Sometimes, the details - numerous as they might be - are too generic to have an impact, and the dull result is the same. Sometimes the details are too absurd to land, or there are too many to keep track of, or they require too much extraneous qualification to fit into the flow of the rest of the story, or they’re irrelevant to the rest of the story anyway. The thing about details? There are countless options. People come up with new ideas all the time, through the exercise of imagination or through developments and innovations in the real world. Basic, core plot arcs may be distilled to a handful of options, but story details are limitless, and the possibility of fun new combinations is always there, whether you’re inventing something entirely never-before-seen or not. It avoids tedious masculine antics in his interactions with other men, while encouraging balanced and respectful interactions with women; Scott never asserts himself as the boss or leader in his relationship with Luis and the rest of his crew, allowing for a smoothly-cooperative dynamic; no time or plot is wasted on pointless jostling for control of the operation with Pym; the idea that Scott needs to prove himself to the three female characters in his life - Hope, Maggie, and Cassie, each for similar but different reasons - is given legitimate weight, instead of implying that Scott and his perspective is inherently superior and correct and the onus is on the other characters to realise that, rather than being on him to live up to other people’s reasonable expectations. It should come as no surprise that the latter element is especially interesting and heartening in the context of this blog.

I can think of three different examples of it in action right off the top of my head, with no effort required. Point is, the degree to which I was utterly thrilled by this movie subverting cliche at every turn of its family saga really cannot be overstated. Maggie is a reasonable person! Scott respects that Cassie’s needs are more important than his wants! Paxton cares about his family and genuinely wants Scott to land on his feet, for the benefit of everyone! There’s no jealous posturing and Scott acting all hurt about being ‘replaced’! HE LITERALLY THANKS PAXTON FOR EVERYTHING HE DOES, WHEN HAVE I EVER SEEN THAT BEFORE?! Honestly, you don’t have to tell the most original story in the world to tell a story that resonates. You don’t even have to avoid common tropes, you just have to think about what you want to do with them. It’s not rocket science. It’s just good honest storytelling.

Great outdoor boot

I'm not exactly an expert on boots, this is the most I have ever spent on a pair of hiking boots, and I know they can run 4x the price of these easily. I used to buy nice work boots, and not have enough left over for nice hiking boots, so I either hiked in work boots, or bought $25-30 hiking boots. It was finally time for an upgrade. I couldn't be happier.

I've had these now for a year or so, and have used them in every season. They have excelled. I'm not a long distance hiker, and that factors in. For fall and spring, these are brilliant all around. In winter they aren't insulated, so you need really good socks. In summer, they aren't very breathable, so again you need really good socks, and ample opportunity to take them off and cool your feet. I tend to do shorter hikes with heavier pack loads, for bushcraft camping. For the various on and off trail, wet and dry, rocky and muddy, infinitely varied conditions, there are none these haven't been comfortable for.

After all this use, they are just broken in really, no noticeable wear. This year I applied some sno-seal, and I'm very happy with how the leather has responded to it. I think these boots are going to last me at least a few more years, and even then it may just be a case of some new laces and insoles.

Still holding up well, though the soles are showing a little wear, it's consistent wear. The lugs are a little worn, but grip hasn't been compromised. I haven't really been keeping track, but I've put at least a couple hundred miles on them. The original laces are getting frayed from thorns catching on them, but haven't broken. Treatment with sno-seal annually has kept them waterproof and the leather is holding up great. I'm not convinced these are the greatest boots in the world or anything, but if you are looking for a hiking boot for environments that are cool and wet, you won't regret buying these. They do get pretty hot if it's 80f and you have sun hitting your feet, breathability is limited.

Good looking and completely waterproof

I ordered these for my husband who has wide feet with a pretty flat arch. He's incredibly hard on his shoes and he needs shoes that are supportive and can really stand up to everything he puts them through. In this instance, he needed waterproof boots and I ordered these despite being concerned that they might not be waterproof enough.

I'm happy to say I was wrong - these are great! Not only do they look great, but they held up to him hosing down a ship deck and soaking his boots in the process and his feet stayed dry!

The fit is great and he needed zero break in time. They're now his go-to shoes whenever he's going anywhere and he's says they're extremely comfortable to be in all day with no soreness or irritation.

I'm really pleased with how well these are made, and how well they're holding up to heavy, regular use. They still look brand new, and if you knew my husband, you'd know that's really saying something!

Great Waterproof Boot!

This is my second set purchased. I ordered my first pair 4 years ago and they're still going strong. I just wanted a second pair to wear for around-town use.

1. Waterproof - I've had no issues with tromping through streams and deep snow with these. They keep my feet nice and dry. 2. Tread - I've never had a slip or fall due to loss of traction with these boots. They will go wherever you need to go. I've worn them around town, hiking through streams and over rocks in the Colorado Rockies, day hikes on managed trails, tree climbing... lots of places. These boots will get you there! 3. Sizing - I always order wide width when I can because of my foot size, and this boot has been one of the most comfortable I've ever purchased. 4. Laces - The laces are good length, and work best if you double knot them. They've lasted as long as the boots have so far (my first pair, 4 years old). 5. Foot support - I don't have arch issues, so I can't really comment on arch support. I can definitely say that my feet don't feel worn out after a long day hiking in these boots.

Happy with sizing and quality

The sizing recommendation (1/2 size smaller than tennis shoe size) was spot on for me. I struggle when buying shoes online because I sometime fit in 11s, and sometimes fit in 11.5s. I took their recommendation and ordered 11's and they were a perfect fit. I've been on several multi-mile walks on pavement with them so far and no problems with blisters or fit right out of the box. Quality is nice. Haven't tested the waterproofing and hope not to, but purchased them with the intention to wear riding motorcycle in the off chance I get caught in the rain. Will update if they meet/exceed/fail expectations in the wet.

Comfrotable, light, and nice looking

First: size. Fits as expected but runs small for a timberland. I have 9.5s of the basic 6" boot with leather collar and they are a tad too large. These at size 9 fit almost too snug (my big toe just sometimes touches the front, it's acceptable but just know this shoe model doesn't run as large as other timberlands.) So this shoe fits as expected, and the 6" basic runs a tad too large.

Second: Comfort. Hot darn, this feels like a sneaker. I've worn boots for years for work and got used to it. I wear boots all the time because I like the versatility. But these are very light and comfortable. I laced up and my foot felt nice inside. I tightened the laces and it still felt comfortable.

The shoe looks great and doesn't feel cheap. The sole is a bit soft which is good for grip but may wear often.

I wear the same shoe every day until they break. My 6" recently got splattered so I got these to replace them. I don't think these are as durable but I would definitely buy again. I paid $60 during a sale, well worth that price.

Great Boots!

I use these for work (Black) and I have a Brown pair for casual wear. I wear a 8.5W in these and have bought three pair of these excellent boots. They are water proof and relatively warm. I work outside and in the winter I wear two pair of sox and either toasty toes or a hand warmer on top of my toes in between the two pair of sox. There is enough room for all this, but not too loose if I don't put them in. My experience with timberland has been high quality footwear with Wide sizes available. I need wide as timberlands seem to be engineered towards a narrower foot than mine in the regular sizes. I always buy wide in timberlands and the sizing seems to be universal among other kinds of boots as I have purchased other waterproof boots in 8.5W but these are the best so far, I bought these when Amazon no longer carried the kind I bought last time which looked more militaristic as I work federal armed security. This pair does not look as military but they have been slightly more comfortable and at a better price.

this bit features a lot of me channeling crazy ex-girlfriend: rosy and lydgate basically burst into “we’ll never have problems again (love yay)!” and rosy’s entire mindset with every relationship she’s ever had with a man can be summed up with in one indescribable instant, which you should all listen to and think about compulsory heterosexuality and unrealistic relationship expectations and lowkey laugh/tear up with me while you listen.

full disclosure: i’ve never read a sarah dessen novel, and i’m sure her books are well-written and wonderful. the quotes i take from this lullaby (which, according to rosy’s tumblr, has been her favorite book since she was like, twelve, no i’m not a weirdo stalker) are necessarily out of context. i’m by no means hating on the book or its depiction of romance: it’s really about how rosy interprets the book???

also rosy is maybe kind of sort of starting to sort her shit out.

fred says that he’s arrogant, max says that he talks over him, and jaime doesn’t seem to like him much either. rosy doesn’t ignore these criticisms--they all know him better than she does, for now anyway. but she’s been watching cinderella on repeat for the past week, and she’s re-read sarah dessen’s this lullaby at least three times in the past four days, and she keeps waking up with “so this is love,” stuck in her head, and she writes quotes from the book into her planner when she has the time, so the most important parts of her days ends up looking like this:

12. “i had a feeling that something big was going to happen. to both of us. that we were, in fact, meant to be together.”

rosgate is the perfect name for their relationship, and rosy smiles wide at the camera, just like she’s practiced.

“this is a great love story in the making,” she says, pushing thoughts of fred and max’s tenuous romance and fred’s barely-concealed broken heart to the side. he’s being so smug about her and lydgate anyway, and the viewers want more content about rosgate, surely.

she repeats that phrase in her head-- “this is a great love story in the making,”-- long after she’s stopped filming.

she stares into the camera, imagines that it’s her brother, and announces, “my standards aren’t that high, fred. it just takes a really extraordinary guy to live up to them. and i think i found one.”

rosy wills herself not to think of chelsea beatrice’s worn, stained, covered-in-patches leather jacket, and more than that, she wills herself to believe her own words.

sure, thomas is a bit of a flake, but he’s a pre-med student! of course he’s busy all of the time, of course he has a lot on his mind, of course he forgets little things like texting her and telling her that he can’t make it to the dinner at the best restaurant in town, that he can’t spend time with her. that doesn’t make this a disaster, fred. it makes rosgate a real developing relationship.

the funny thing is that a part of rosy is more disappointed about washing her makeup off more than anything else. rosy elects to ignore that particular part of herself, and eats a box of chocolate she’s saved for occasions such as these. she pops a white chocolate heart into her mouth, forgets how long it had taken her to apply the perfect shade of eyeshadow, and thinks of nothing but lydgate and her unanswered texts and phone calls. there. all gone.

15. “i am coming to terms with the fact that loving someone requires a leap of faith, and that a soft landing is never guaranteed.”

the thing is--

“rosamund?”

rosy hates destiny, on occasion. it brought her and thomas together, but it also shoves chelsea beatrice back into her life, an inconvenient obstacle on the way towards her romcom ending with thomas.

“rosamund? is that you?”

rosy bites her lip, and drags her eyes upwards, away from her newly-painted pink nails and to chelsea’s baffled face. rosy takes a tiny breath. she had forgotten how dark chelsea’s eyes are, the collection of freckles near her right eye, the tiny dragon tattoo on the side of her neck.

“are you ok?”

chelsea’s voice is even and measured: it’s not a roommate’s voice, or a friend’s voice. it’s a stranger’s voice, noticing something vaguely amiss.

rosy swallows the lump in her throat. her face burns, and her eyes sting. of all the things she could have expected, this hurts the most. “i’m fine.”

chelsea squints at her slightly, like when rosy would pre-game too hard and insist on wobbling to a party anyway. “are you sure?”

rosy closes her eyes, thinks, she is just an obstacle, opens her eyes, and smiles right at chelsea. “would you mind going somewhere else to study? i really need quiet today, i’ve got two big exams coming up and a presentation to prepare for.”

chelsea opens her mouth, then closes it, then grabs her bag and her laptop case. she leaves without another word.

rosy wonders, for a moment, in the silence, what chelsea had wanted to say to her. she opens her textbook and begins to read.

an hour of studying later, thomas texts her: wanna come film for dot’s documentary? i have a surprise for you :) and rosy appreciates how thomas never uses the winky face emoji, and she replies yes, be there soon! xo right away: surely she’s studied enough.

when she gets to her shared room, thomas is holding the camera.

“i thought i could film you for once,” he declares, grinning that almost-smug, hopeful smile of his.

all of the anticipation whooshes out of her as she sits on her bed. rosy manages a little laugh. “i’m not sure if i--”

“come on, it’ll be fun!”

“i just don’t get it,” he tells her, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder on her bed. he’s too close, but rosy doesn’t tell him that: she can’t drive him away, of course. “why do you keep saying you don’t like being filmed but then make videos for dot?”

“it’s--” rosy bites her lip. “it’s different, that’s all.” she leans into him. he’s solid and strong and still too close. “can we go get lunch?”

the camera is hers (and sometimes fred’s). she uses it. she controls it. she doesn’t--rosy makes sure to squeeze thomas’s hand as they walk to lunch--she doesn’t want to be filmed in that way, in the way that thomas looks at her.

a traitorous thought keeps rosy up all night. her phone flashes the time: 1am, then 2:32am, then 3:45am, then 4:13am, then 5:57am. she keeps humming “so this is love” to herself. she tries to breathe evenly.

the thought doesn’t go away. the thought keeps repeating: maybe she doesn’t want to be seen that way at all.

16. “you know, when it works, love is pretty amazing. it's not overrated. there's a reason for all those songs.”

rosy and thomas are finally, officially together. he kisses her, and it’s the same as every other boy she’s been with.

while the camera is still on, she beams, and for a moment she feels so happy she could burst.

she stops recording and presses the power button.

the same sinking feeling slowly settles into her chest.

she feels a rush of...something. it’s not really butterflies. it’s not adrenaline either.

maybe it’s fear.

rosy nearly laughs: maybe she’s terrified.

17. “i can say I made a lot of mistakes, but i don't regret things. because at least i didn't spend a life standing outside, wondering what living would be like.”

fred goes on and on about how her and thomas are so heterosexual he could die, how they’re the straightest couple he’s ever known.

an hour before celia’s party, he whines, “when will i get a boyfriend?”

rosy checks her lip gloss in the mirror. “maybe if you actually asked max instead of just assuming he’d show up--”

“it is homophobic that you have a date to the party and i don’t,” fred declares, flopping backwards onto his nest of pillows, ending the discussion.

it’s just a joke. fred says stuff like this all the time. rosy should laugh, or feel smug, but instead she is angry.

her knuckles whiten. “shut up, fred.”

his voice is muffled from all of his pillows. “c’mon, you know it’s true--”

“fuck you.”

rosy is dressed and ready to meet thomas at celia’s. her lip gloss is flawles. she leaves without looking back.

the party is fun. everyone is so fun. rosy wants to be fun, but she’s still angry, everything buzzing loud in her head, so she drinks more than she’d planned to. she drinks and drinks and and drinks and feels fun.

she doesn’t tell anyone else this, but drawing her number on billie’s arm was the best part of a shitty night. even when rosy sobers up the next day, she almost wants billie to call her. no. not almost. rosy blinks in the too-bright light. she wants billie to call her. not in a true-love way, not in a pining crush way, but still. rosy wants billie to call her. she allows herself to realize this, and then thomas starts talking to her with the camera on.

18. “love can make up for a lot.”

“i know what is and isn’t healthy for you.”

thomas wants her to give up drinking, and that angry feeling squeezes rosy’s chest again, so she goes out drinking the next night, with dana and sharon and jackie and all of her other friends. it’s the weekend. she can do her work later. she can respond to thomas’s texts later.

the next morning, rosy hears thomas talking. he’s sitting in her room talking...to the camera? she tries to go back to sleep, to ignore the uneasiness and irritation and--ugh, that was one too many tequilas--but then she catches thomas saying, “i’m beginning to feel really powerless here,” and rosy cannot believe it. did he really say that? is she still drunk? she almost wants to laugh, if she wasn’t so tired and hungover. she doesn’t catch his next sentence, but she does hear, “she was so mild when we met,” and, “i don’t know what happened,” so rosy interrupts him.

she wants to say, “i don’t know what happened either, but i’m starting to figure it out why it’s been happening.” she doesn’t say any of that. thomas tells her to go back to sleep, so she does.

rosy wakes up later, drinks water, manages to sit up after a while, and tries not to worry too much.

I hope you’re in the mood for reading, because this is gonna be l o n g.

STEP ONE: GETTING STARTED

- The first thing you should do if you want to start writing, or just start doing it on a regular basis, is to get inspired. And I don’t mean sitting around, waiting for the muse to come visit you. Inspiration comes not from having extraordinary things happen to you, but from always trying to discover something interesting and unusual about your immediate surroundings. Inspiration comes from thinking. Watch your thoughts. Describe the things you see in your mind, ask yourself what feelings and thoughts they evoke in you, and why that might be. Keep your brain muscles fit - draw connections between objects that are not usually regarded as similar, concentrate on the details, invent stories in your head on your way - it’s would also make your alone time much more interesting!

- Get to know yourself. Poetry is an excellent way to examine your feelings and accept yourself as the person you are. It’s also a way to take control back from your emotions when they seem overwhelming and scary. Don’t shy away from your feelings - get to the core of each emotion! The moment you understand why you feel the way you do, you’ll be able to cope with it and find a way to feel better! :)

- Find connections between your feelings and the world around you. Now that you know how you feel and why, think about the things that have made an impression on you recently, and match them to your current thoughts! The more you think about your ideas, the more different points of view you regard them from, the deeper you will explore into them and the better you will understand them!

STEP TWO: GETTING IT RIGHT

- Take notes. It might sound tempting to store your visions only in your memory, but trust me, memory has an attitude of its own, and can be suprisingly single-minded and stubborn sometimes. You know how when you suddenly recall something you realize that in a moment you weren’t aware of that thing ever happening? If you want to develop your ideas, you have to keep them ordered. The best advice I can offer is to make a notebook or simply a file in your phone where you can write your thoughts down in plain text, when you’re particularly satisfied with them.That will allow you to go back to them as often as you like, and draw inspiration from them whenever you need it!

- Read. Vocabulary is the most important thing in poetry (imho), especially if you want to write in rhyme. Getting to know the language is even more important if you’re not writing in your mother tongue (as I am), so don’t hesitate to learn these new words - but don’t hang on to each one! Sort the new words that are most common and learn them, because using uncommon words can be frustrating for the reader (more on that later). Make sure you understand the context of the words you’re using, so as to not convey the wrong meaning!

Example 1:

Don’t tell meFor spoken words, they fumbleAnd fall to the groundWrite it down.

Don’t play meFor sung words, they waverAnd lose in the soundWrite it down.

As you can see, the word fumble should be replaced with tumble so the right meaning will be conveyed. Always check the words you’re using, especially if you just added them to your vocabulary!

STEP THREE: GET TO WRITING

- Write it down. It doesn’t matter in what form - uneven rhyme, blank verse, or even plain text - the most important thing is to get your ideas ordered. Once you figure out what you want to write about, the rest comes easily!

Example 2:

Now, this is a very rough draft that, of course, is what I would have called absolute trash had I not concidered it as the mere spine on which to place the bones and flesh of my actual poem! It as a very common mistake, so don’t make it! If there is a law to writing, it is do not delete anything. You never know when you can turn a failed verse into a materpiece!

- Plan. Planning is a writer’s best friend. Think about the structure you want to use, focus on the begining and the end - these should be your strongest points! Speaking of structure, that’s one very helpful device - a mirror frame or a refrain would help you organize your poem around a phrase/motif, and make your writing more coherent and your thought process easier to follow. Remember, the reader doesn’t know your way of thinking, and can’t always get adjusted to it unless you help them a little!

Example 3:

Oh, why don’t you wander,My little fickle heart?There’s a rose-bud– there’s a thunderWhy not settle for that?

“Roses stung me, thunder burned me,”Said the little fickle heart.“So I stole a petal and a flash,Won’t you let me now come back?”

Oh, but what of wonder,My little fickle heart?Worlds await you– words will mend youWhy not settle for that?

“Words enslaved me, worlds forsakeme,When their magic had worn out.But I brought a paper and a pen,Won’t you let me back again?”

Ah, you’re so ungrateful,My little fickle heart!Life will bend you– I’ll betray youWhy d'you settle for that?

“‘Long as you would let me restBruised and bleeding in your chest,‘Tis but all I’ll ever ask,”Said the little fickle heart.

Now this is the beautiful poem that came out of that messy draft! :D

- Forget the thesaurus. Draw your words from memory and not from a dictionary, unless you want your writing to turn into an incoprehensible mess of complicated words whose meaning even you don’t remember

Example 4:

The ink of my soul got blurred under yourfingertipsThe solidness of my bones went fluidThe width of my gaze narrowed down to your faceIn the hole between my lungs your heart found a place

Our words lost their outlines in the sweetest ofsighsAnd light and shade colorizedWe put liquefied stars in each other’s eyesBut the universe expands and gravity took our hands

It tore through our lungs and our united breathsgot burnedDesecrated our dreams and our starlight refracted in tearsSat like morbid growth on the tips of our tonguesWhispered blood in our ears ‘till we choked on the feeling

And acid rain fell from the atmosphereOur hearts beat brokenly for no-one to hearFingerprints we left faded from our handsThank God we’re sane again

(I have absolutely no idea what desecrate means :D)
