I’m currently rewriting the first two chapters of Toon Zaps, a sick hurt/comfort fic about Mickey Mouse during the last month before his copyright is set to run out.

While I liked the first two chapters that were already uploaded, I also felt like it wasn’t complete. I wasn’t entirely happy with it. I’m excited to get the first chapter out and then the first chapter of Mouse Dad fic (a fic where Mickey Mouse eventually adopts Yakko, Wakko, and Dot). I might upload each chapter of those stories back and forth at the same time. I might wait to upload one store after finishing the other. It’s up in the air.

But I want to share the first paragraph of Toon Zaps Chapter 1 rewrite with you all!

‘Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick...’

One lone clock punctuated the awkward silence as a gruff-looking man in a white coat scribbled notes on a clipboard in silence, his expression confused and intrigued. He sat facing a computer mounted on a mechanical arm attached to the ceiling, whose screen was cluttered with seemingly random notes and charts. A couple posters with yellowed edges adorned the white walls behind him. On these posters there is an inherent disconnect between the words to the right: 'Talk to your loved ones about life insurance' and the image of a happy family captured during a time of shared laughter. Almost as if they were silently enjoying the silent dread emanating from the patient across the room.

It starts with the low call of the mourning doves.

The day is the coolest it will be and the shadows creep along the street as they run from the sun. It's always a distinct smell that lingers in the air, but one that can only be described as summer. Harkening back to the days of your youth, to long days spent doing nothing while complaining about the heat, to laughs shared with your friends while doing stupid shit, to tears shed because of sunburns and exhaustion.

Your body carries with it memories that you have since forgotten, memories that can return at the drop of a hat thanks to the specific combination of the sun on your skin and the call of the doves and the intro to that hit song from years ago. The particular sound of ice clinking against your cup or the feel of juice dripping down your chin after biting into a piece of your favorite fruit or the smell of chlorine or salt or dirt, mixing into a body of water that hits you just right.

It starts with the low call of the mourning doves, piercing your heart with stunning precision, knocking the breath from your lungs, even if just for a moment.

#there's this specific combination of sensations that just #take me back to when i was six with my cousin playing in front of his friend's house with trees that shaded the entire street #as the caw of a crow came moments before the call of the mourning dove #and another wherein i remember visiting my sister at the house where she grew up when i was four #the old stuffy feeling of the glass displays with porcelain dolls not meant for children and how everything was tinged blue #the call of my sister before she dragged me out of the house and into the sun (and man i've always hated the sun)#the scrape of my knees on the pavement as i tripped and the laugh of the best friend who she no longer talks to #the smell of the evergreen hedges that bordered the property offering nothing but home to spiders and lizards and the like #then falling asleep in the park as a teenager as i waited for my friend to come out; the feeling of safety that has since been torn from me #the grass prickled the skin of my arms and legs and the heat was unbearable but it was worth it and i would've done it time and again #and they're all so fucking visceral as though happening only yesterday #x:ix
