The knowledge that she could open a portal to her own world, albeit unstably and at great emotional cost, became Kayleigh’s most guarded secret and her most fervent hope. The "research" sessions conducted by Vesta and his team, now hyper-focused on replicating her anger and fear-memory associated distress , became a strange sort of training ground for her. While they prodded and provoked, trying to elicit the specific emotional signature Raphael had identified , Kayleigh inwardly practiced. She learned to ride the waves of induced emotion, to feel the surge of anger or anxiety without letting it crest into an uncontrolled portal manifestation. Instead, she’d subtly try to channel that energy, to feel how the phone responded, how the soul within resonated.
Her nights were dedicated to more intense, self-directed "rehearsals." She would meticulously reconstruct the most infuriating and stressful encounters with Grendel Jinx – the coercion into the "Friendship Agreement," the sixteen simultaneous homework assignments, the sheer audacity of Grendel's kleptomania. She would then layer these with the cold fury she felt towards Rimuru for the Falmuth massacre and her current imprisonment. It was a dangerous cocktail of genuine past trauma and present indignation.
The phone would grow hot, the vortex icon sometimes flickering into view, but she always pulled back before a full portal could form. She was learning control, learning to build the emotional pressure to a critical point and hold it. Each session left her exhausted, emotionally raw, but also with a growing sense of grim determination. She was walking a razor's edge, but it was her edge.
Chapter 28: The Unseen Observation
Kayleigh was not as unnoticed as she hoped. While she managed to avoid creating any overt dimensional disturbances during her nocturnal practices, Raphael, Lord of Wisdom, was not limited to detecting only such gross phenomena. She spent the day in a state of feigned compliance, her mind meticulously planning. She knew the surveillance was constant. She couldn't just open a portal and stroll through. She needed a distraction, however small, and she needed to be fast.
As night fell, she began her preparations. She didn't focus on escape immediately. Instead, she feigned a deep emotional breakdown, a tactic she hoped would be interpreted by her observers as a sign of her finally cracking under the pressure of their experiments. She let out a choked sob, then another, allowing genuine feelings of despair and frustration to surface, but keeping the core of her emotional "weapon" – that cold, focused fury – tightly coiled within.
The phone in her hand grew warm. She could sense the watchers, perhaps Vesta’s team monitoring her vitals, perhaps Diablo himself observing from the shadows.
Let them think I'm breaking.
Then, with a suddenness she hoped would catch them off guard, she shifted her emotional state. The despair became a catalyst, fuel for the inferno of righteous anger and desperate longing she had been cultivating. She pictured Grendel’s smug face after a particularly egregious act of manipulation , Rimuru’s cold justification for the massacre, the endless, sterile days of her confinement.
The phone blazed. The vortex icon burned onto the screen. The air tore. A portal, larger and more stable than any she had managed before, ripped open in her room. Through it, she saw the familiar, slightly worn armchair in her Chichester flat, bathed in the soft glow of a streetlamp outside her window. It smelled of dust and old books and home.
"Now!" a voice screamed – Rimuru’s. He was already moving, appearing at her doorway with Diablo a split second behind him, their expressions a mixture of fury and alarm.
Kayleigh didn't hesitate. There was no time for a witty retort, no time for a final condemnation. She lunged towards the shimmering gateway.
Diablo was faster. A tendril of pure darkness shot out, not at the phone this time, but at her ankle, seeking to drag her back.
The phone, as if sensing her imminent escape and the direct threat, pulsed with a final, defiant surge of energy. The personal anti-magic shield around Kayleigh flared brilliantly, and for a crucial microsecond, Diablo’s tendril seemed to stutter, its form disrupted by the sheer intensity of the soul-powered barrier.
It was enough. Kayleigh threw herself through the portal, a desperate, tumbling dive. She felt a searing pain as the edge of the portal seemed to slice at her trailing leg, Diablo’s disrupted attack perhaps still grazing her. Then, the familiar, musty smell of her flat enveloped her, and the roar of Tempest’s alarm sirens was abruptly cut off, replaced by the distant, comforting drone of late-night Chichester traffic.
She landed hard on her own worn rug, the phone skittering away from her grasp. The portal behind her snapped shut with a sound like a thunderclap, leaving only the lingering scent of ozone and a profound, echoing silence.
Kayleigh lay there, gasping, pain shooting up her leg, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was out. She was home. But as she looked at the fading energy burns on her ankle, she knew her escape had not been without cost, and the echoes of her time in Rimuru's world would not be easily silenced.

Blog Post 50: VR PROJECT: City S-8
In this brief blog, I want to reflect on the importance of getting feedback from peers and instructors — and how it completely changed my mindset about the project.

Finding Inspiration
After the lows of the last few days, I spent some time scouring the internet for inspiration. What I found left me both enlightened and amazed by the incredible work and technical skill of other artists. Among the many pieces I came across, one stood out for its sheer audacity and visual complexity: City S-8 by Piotr Krynski.
Piotr Krynski — A Master of Atmosphere

Piotr Krynski’s work has been a source of inspiration for me, not just for its technical excellence but also for its haunting, macabre tone. His sculpting skills are among the finest in the industry, and his ability to compose a scene with the depth and emotional resonance of a canvas painting has baffled me for the longest time.
Perhaps the most demanding and impressive aspect of his creative process is his mastery of lighting and scene development. One of my favorite pieces of Piotr’s work, The Last Woman on Earth, manages to capture the fragility and complexity of humanity within the confines of a digital art piece. The way he manipulates light and shadow to create emotional depth is nothing short of extraordinary.
City S-8 — A New Benchmark

City S-8 has the combined aesthetic of Dishonored and Half-Life: Alyx — two of my favorite games — and showcases a degree of visual fidelity and complexity that leaves me in awe every time I see it. While many of Piotr’s other works are also highly detailed, I believe City S-8 is one of the few that fully captures the atmosphere and aesthetic of the games that inspired it.
What really amazes me about this project is how it appears to be a concept art piece — yet it’s a fully modeled and textured 3D scene created in Blender. The seamless integration of photoscanned assets with sculpted elements creates a level of depth and authenticity that’s hard to replicate. The lighting alone adds an extra layer of complexity, heightening the overall atmosphere and making the environment feel alive.

Piotr’s breakdown videos of City S-8 are equally eye-opening. Seeing how he constructs the scene — layer by layer — makes me realize just how much technical and artistic mastery goes into creating something of that caliber. The computational complexity alone is staggering.
Setting a New Goal
My goal is to one day create art pieces that rival the work of Piotr Krynski and other artists of his caliber. That goal feels distant right now — but it’s not impossible. If I’ve learned anything from this project so far, it’s that progress comes from persistence. Piotr didn’t reach this level overnight — it took years of learning, experimenting, and adapting.
I aim to continue on this path, refining my skills and growing as an artist, until I reach that level. One step at a time.

Too Many Iterations? How to Avoid Three Common Problems in Semiconductor Design
Developing semiconductor intellectual property (IP), system-on-chip (SoC) designs, and complete systems is enormously challenging. Even a small error in the hardware design can require a very expensive chip turn to fix. Of course, this also delays time to market (TTM), as do any unexpected issues arising in design verification, hardware/software co-verification (also known as pre-silicon validation), and post-silicon validation in the bringup lab. Some of this is hard to avoid, due to the sheer size and complexity of today’s designs. However, there are three problems that commonly arise in the design, verification, and validation flow that can be avoided by rigorous application of specification automation.
The Imprecision of Natural Language
Every design, whether a single IP block or a room-sized massively parallel supercomputer, starts with a specification. The product marketing/management team defines the target market, talks to leading-edge customers, surveys the competition, and defines the key requirements for the product. The architecture team must then convert the description into a detailed specification from which the hardware and software teams can develop the physical product. While there have been significant advances in formal design specifications, today there is no way to completely specify a semiconductor design except with a natural language such as English.
The problem is that natural languages are inherently imprecise. Translating words into register-transfer-level (RTL) design code and programs in languages such as C/C++ is very much an inexact science. Naturally, any misinterpretation results in a system that does not operate as specified. The resulting design may not perform intended functionality, perform it incorrectly, or fail to meet performance and power requirements. Detecting these issues during verification and pre-silicon validation requires enormous resources to find them, debug them, fix them, and confirm that the fixes are correct.
The only way to get around this problem is to write specifications in a way that is precise and not subject to misunderstandings. While there is not (yet) a universal solution, there are many parts of a design that can be specified in rigorous, precise formats. Examples include registers and memories, state machines, data paths, interfaces, clock-domain-crossing (CDC) logic, functional safety mechanisms, and block interconnections. Available formats include IP-XACT, SystemRDL, state machine transitions, and spreadsheets. When your designers can write their RTL code accurately from these precise descriptions, the design is much more likely to be correct.
The Ambiguity of Natural Language
Natural languages are ambiguous as well as imprecise. There are many teams on an IP or SoC project who work from the same specification. In addition to the designers, the verification team must develop testbenches and tests, programmers must write embedded code and drivers, validation teams must run the hardware and software together, and technical writers must create end-user documentation. It is impossible for all these teams to read and interpret natural language specifications in the same way. Any inconsistencies delay TTM and consume lots of resources as the development teams figure out what’s wrong and fix it before chip fabrication.
The only way to avoid this problem is to automatically generate as many of the traditional manual files as possible. If RTL code, testbenches, and tests are all generated from executable golden specifications, there are no inconsistencies to be found and fixed during the verification process. The resulting design is correct by construction. If the drivers and embedded code that interact closely with the hardware are automatically generated along with the hardware, there are no inconsistencies to be found and fixed during pre-silicon or post-silicon validation. Not finding issues in the bringup lab means that chip turns will not compromise your project cost and schedule.
Automated generation from executable specifications, also known as specification automation, also helps with the first problem. A specification automation solution can generate RTL hardware much faster and more reliably than a designer. This saves time and resources while eliminating human errors such as typos. Similarly, generating software, verification and verification environments, and documentation directly from the specifications is faster and more accurate than manual effort.
The Evolution of Design Specifications
All the benefits outlined above would be compelling even if they only applied once on an IP or SoC project. That’s not reality; the truth is that specifications change constantly over the source of your project. Product managers continue to talk to potential customers and keep tabs on the competition, and sometimes this results in new features or requirements being added to the specifications. It is also common for implementation issues to ripple all the back to the specifications. Logic synthesis, layout, design-for-test (DFT) insertion, and other steps in the implementation process may require specification changes for resolution.
When all the hardware, software, verification, validation, and documentation files are written by humans, they must be updated manually every time that the specifications change. This introduces new opportunities for typos and different interpretations, delaying TTM as these issues are found and fixed. There is also a high likelihood that teams will get out of sync when multiple revisions of specifications are in play. Specification automation resolves the evolution problem entirely. Sorry if you’ve done this before, but for Himring worldbuilding do you have any thoughts on the layout of the fortress and its architectural style etc? In fic I’ve variously seen it described as ranging from a single solitary castle all the way to a whole little walled city on the hill so I was wondering what you thought about that! I think it's somewhere between a single castle and a walled city! It's a walled fortress comprising of a number of primary buildings within the walls and then a number of remote outposts throughout the March.
The Fortress of Himring stands on the hill of the same name. It is a stone fortress constructed primarily from slate, granite and travertine. Its construction took several decades and was worked on primarily by members of the Noldorin host Maedhros had brought there with aid from a group of dwarves from the Ered Luin Maedhros had formed an alliance with. In exchange for their help, they were given access to the geological resources of the March and protection while traveling North towards the Ered Engrin.
A number of stonemasonry techniques were utilized in the construction of Himring including arch masonry, dry stone (used primarily in the construction of remote buildings and lower walls), and post and lintel which makes use of pillars and beams. Most of the arches and arch systems of Himring are vault arches, that is, self supporting arched systems used to construct ceilings and roofs. This means spacious almost cavernous rooms with high ceilings. Almost all rooms have either fireplaces or fire pits with some buildings having a complex system of chimneys.
The fortress is built upon the Hill of Himring and rises up from the top with sections extending around towards the base of the hill and even some under the earth. The foundations rise to a sheer, wide tower with surrounding buildings connected through bridges and ground level passages.
The design is beautiful as is most creations by Noldorin architects but Himring is generally thought of as a grim, utilitarian place. It is a pallet of grays of varying shades, standing starkly against the cold skies. It is made to withstand both harsh weather and enemy attack. Its full plans are known only to Maedhros himself and there are many secret exits, hiding places, storage areas and other features understood on a need to know basis
Indeed, it is probably the most utilitarian of the Fëanorian realms with the lowest number of civilians. People went to Himring because they desired to be on the forefront of the battle with Morgoth. There is a population of non fighters, comprising of both soldiers who are unable to fight (temporarily or otherwise) due to injury and those with other distinct roles. They are employed as cooks, hunters, construction and repair, crafting, producing and mending essentials like clothes, weapons and blankets, overseeing trade and supplies, translation, cartography and strategy and others of the many jobs that are needed to maintain Himring.
There is a small market that operates within the walls of Himring but, due to rations and inventory protocol, is fairly regulated. (Any essentials, and there is a long list for this, are regulated and cannot be sold without formal permission. Luxury goods, puzzles and toys for the few children who live at the March, other crafts, and certain food items are usually sold here depending on what they are made from)
Most artisans come to Himring with the understanding that there wares will be primarily used for the war and supporting those fighting it.
The fortress is lined with parapets near its top. Half of them are partly covered to protect against the worst of winter winds and snow.
Steel is made in a bloomery and forge a few minutes away from the fortress of Himring itself where weapons are also made. The forge combines Noldorin techniques with some Sindar ones and weapons development is more prioritized than in most of the other Fëanorian realms. Animals are kept in lower, wooden outer houses towards the bottom of the hill of Himring, to protect against theft and the cold.

why the american campaign in afghanistan was destined for failure, and other strange stuff.
Our campaign in Afghanistan which began on October 7, 2001, dubbed “Operation Enduring Freedom” for some peculiar and uniquely American reason, was doomed from the very beginning, and most of the blame for the failure is ours.

So why did this happen in the first place?
Detailing the entirety of Afghanistan’s tumultuous 19th- and 20th-century history here would an arduous (and, ultimately, pointless) task, but, put succinctly, the USA and Afghanistan’s eastern neighbour, Pakistan, were instrumental in the initial development of the Taliban as a viable militant organisation and major player in Afghanistan.

The Soviet Union embroiled itself in a bitter conflict in Afghanistan from 24 December 1979 until 15 February 1989. Through Pakistani intelligence services, the CIA, in its anti-commie fervour, armed and funded anti-Soviet resistance groups, collectively known as mujahideen (which is Swedish for “turboprop plane”, or maybe just Arabic for “those engaged in jihad”). Spirited resistance and brilliant guerrilla-style tactics by the mujahideen, which included future prominent Taliban figures such as Haibatullah Akhundzada and Mohammad Omar, led to the eventual departure of Soviet forces from Afghanistan in what has been termed (perhaps ironically, considering our current situation) “Russia’s Vietnam”. At least 562,000 Afghans perished in the Soviet-Afghan War, and millions more either fled the country or were internally displaced. This conflict also likely directly contributed to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

As a civil war further ravaged Afghanistan, the Taliban, founded in 1994 by Islamic cleric (mullah) Mohammad Omar, emerged as the preeminent force amongst the mujahideen. Backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, the Deobandi Islamist group quickly made territorial gains and captured Kabul in 1996, brutally murdering former President Najibullah to punctuate their conquest.
Under the newly established Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Taliban regime went right to work in establishing stringent shari’a law over the territories they subdued, barring women from education and work, suppressing ethnic and religious minorities, and outlawing music and TV (which, with the exception of the last thing, should sound familiar to anyone familiar with our own history).
A certain Usama bin Laden (UBL), who founded the terrorist organisation al-Qa’ida (literally “the base”) in 1988 during the Soviet-Afghan War, funnelled resources, to include arms and foreign fighters, into the mujahideen resistance effort in Afghanistan through his Maktab al-Khidamat. Though the organisation provided little in terms of overall impact on the war, it boasted a backing of both Pakistan’s ISI and Saudi Arabia’s General Intelligence Presidency, and was later absorbed into al-Qa’ida.
Having had his Saudi citizenship stripped and amid mounting pressure from Saudi Arabia, the US, and Sudan, bin Laden opted to return to Afghanistan in 1996, where he would forge an alliance with Mullah Omar. Omar’s Taliban regime provided a suitable, ahem, base of operations for bin Laden’s burgeoning global terrorism aspirations, and Pakistan provided continued funding and manpower for the Taliban and its al-Qa’ida allies up until 2001.

Ahmad Shah Massoud, a guerrilla commander who famously repelled Soviet occupying forces from the Panjshir Valley, became a leading figure in anti-Taliban efforts. Massoud, along with Abdul Rashid Dostum, a polarising yet powerful ethnic Uzbek warlord, formed the United Front (commonly referred to as the Northern Alliance). Instead of the Pashtun-centric approach utilised by the Taliban, Massoud sought to incorporate Afghanistan’s numerous ethnicities under the United Front’s umbrella.
Despite the Northern Alliance’s clear opposition to the Taliban and ostensibly having prior knowledge that radical elements were at play, the United States provided zero backing to the resistance efforts. Massoud himself addressed the European Parliament and warned of an imminent attack, and also expressed the need for US aid in combatting Taliban belligerents.
Two days prior to the September 11 attacks, the highly revered Massoud prepared to give an interview to a pair of Arab TV journalists, and it would be the last thing he did, as the “journalists” detonated a suicide bomb fashioned out of a TV camera, which was apparently stolen in France. The "Lion of Panjshir” was buried in his home village of Bazarak, Panjshir Valley, with hundreds of thousands of people in attendance.

Following 9/11, then-President George W. Bush threatened the Taliban regime and demanded that they deliver al-Qa’ida leaders in Afghanistan to American authorities, an undertaking they promptly decided to never do. Naturally, Bush came to shove, and a joint resolution that somehow declared war on the very concept of terror was issued.
The United States also finally decided to team up with the Northern Alliance at the onset of OEF in October 2001. Fortunately, it paid off; the Taliban regime rapidly disintegrated after being bombed into the Bronze Age. Despite having effectively vanquished the Taliban, the US failure to capture or kill UBL at Tora Bora likely protracted the conflict into the behemoth bumblefuck we currently recognise.
We did manage to finally kill UBL on May 2, 2011, but stayed in Afghanistan for another 10 years, because stuff. In 2018, then-President Trump ordered a drawdown of approximately 7,000 troops, and in February 2020, US envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban vice emir Abdul Ghani Baradar signed a peace agreement. In July of this year, we abandoned Bagram Airfield, our biggest base, virtually overnight, and did not bother informing the Afghans, which I’m sure made them extremely happy.

The Taliban resurgence into power was equally swift and met surprisingly little resistance: on August 15, 2021, the Taliban took Kabul and cemented its authority. This version of the militant group the NATO coalition and pro-Western Afghan forces soundly defeated in 2001 made promises to uphold women’s rights and to maintain an inclusive government, though the killing of at least three at a protest in Jalalabad, amongst other things, probably does little to reassure critics that their takeover is a positive turn of events. That said, far-right and neo-Nazi elements are, in fact, celebrating the Taliban’s seizure of power for some depraved Nazi-exclusive reason. It must also be noted that, on multiple levels, the evangelical brand of Christianity possesses significant overlap with the Deobandi Islamist stylings of the Taliban credo.

As of late, we have frequently underestimated the capabilities of enemy combatants, and the conclusion of our campaign in Afghanistan is no different: President Biden hugely miscalculated the Taliban’s competence in retaking the nation, citing the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces’ (ANDSF) strength in numbers and superiority in armaments and materiel. Following the takeover, he even went on to blame the ANDSF’s lack of resolve as a reason for the US-backed regime’s collapse. While technically true, it also fails to take into account Afghanistan’s nature itself. In reality, Afghanistan, in contrast to a central federal government such as that of the United States, is very splintered, factional, corruption-ridden, and largely fiercely independent and self-governing, especially amongst Pashtun tribes. It’s as if Piru and Crip sets spread out over an entire country ... and over several centuries.

An additional blunder was approaching the campaign as one would a conventional conflict, something which clearly does not apply to a place as plagued by lawlessness as Afghanistan. There are largely no clear enemies (or friends, for that matter), and trying to distinguish friend from foe is akin to stabbing a warbling mass of sentient Silly Putty or the weird black goo from Prometheus. The United States will almost always win in terms of sheer might and overall warfighting acumen, as we are skilled in both conventional and asymmetric warfare, but what can you do when you have no idea who the enemy is? When the enemy is willing to “wait it out” indefinitely? Sure, we could literally blow everyone up, but, last I heard, wholesale genocide is a generally frowned-upon activity.
Calling Afghanistan even a Pyrrhic victory seems like an overstatement when you examine the initial mission, our successes, and the final result. Sure, we got UBL, which was supposedly the entire point of the invasion, but if so, why did we choose to remain for another ten years, wasting a metric asston of resources in the process? To build a nation? To soothe our collective ego?

If one is to build a nation, it requires a decent understanding of and a rapport with the people groups with whom you are dealing. It is not enough to simply install people who share your particular leanings and instruct them to do what you would do. It is certainly inadequate to provide arms, training, and funding to people and expect them to do your bidding when shit hits the fan. This sort of thinking also indirectly implies that we possess some kind of moral authority over the nations we invade. While our post-war influence has proved positive in some places (Japan, South Korea, Germany, etc.), it does not mean that we should be building nations in every place in which we set foot, especially in a place so volatile and tribalistic as Afghanistan.
I have communicated with a few individuals who insist that President Biden’s withdrawal was too hasty, or that we should just remain in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. As much as I am typically revolted by former President Trump and his frequently incoherent word salads, he was right about this particular matter: “The only way they last is if we’re there. What are we going to say? We’ll stay for another 21 years, then we’ll stay for another 50. The whole thing is ridiculous." Yes ... yes, it is ridiculous to prop up an institution that will collapse instantaneously in our absence.
I am no fan of former Senator Ron Paul, and especially Alex Jones and InfoWars, but Paul is almost completely correct in making this statement. Ultimately, a militaristic approach to dominance does not pave the way for longevity. While it is virtually impossible (and infeasible) to return to a 1930s-era isolationist policy, repeated and extended global conflicts only serve to deplete American resources, even if war profiteers have much to gain from it.

Ultimately, rather than rushing pell-mell into unknown and dangerous situations, it is important, especially in this time period, to examine why things went wrong to avoid embroiling ourselves in additional catastrophic and unwinnable debacles such as our Afghanistan conflict. This is a time for self-reflection, rather than outrage.
