"Homer Goes to College", ep.3(84) of S5 (October 14, 1993).
"Rosebud", ep.4(85) of S5 (October 21, 1993).
I want to make these drawings kinda sketchy and loose – because I want them to be done quickly, I’m getting lazy, and because I want to honor imperfect, loose style of original things. It’s not that easy to do deliberately sketchy work so it would still look finished and not half-baked. Maybe I’m going to master it to the end of this project…

Whats your favorite simpsons episode(s)?
Are there any that you really enjoy for being barney (semi)centric?
Thanks for the ask! Oh there are so many episodes I love a lot. Ones that come to mind though...
Moe Baby Blues is very high up my list. Of course, Moe, but also cuz it's genuinely super sweet to see him bond with Maggie.
Lots of earlier episodes I like a lot, one that sticks to mind a lot is Homer Alone. I love how everyone is characterized and Barney's good and silly in there as well.
Mr. Plow is iconic, and I love how it develops Barney and Homer as characters both independedly and seperately. One of my top favourites.
I really like The Way We Was, mostly because I love how it shows a little insight on Homer and Marge's high school years and it's just a very fun episode in general.
New Kid on the Block I enjoy too mostly because Laura is a super fun character and I wish she got to do more.
I Love Lisa is an episode I love a lot due to Ralph. He's one of the characters that got me into the show, I just think he's adorable and silly and I miss when he was just a clueless, innocent child. Very strong episode in general too and I love Wiggum too, he's so dumb lol.
Homer's Barbershop Quartet cuz it's just good. Rosebud also. I don't much care for most of A Star is Burns but Barney being a movie guy is something that speaks to me.
Lisa the Vegetarian I like a lot as a vegan and is the main reason I like Lisa as a character still when most people are divided on her. It's actually the most respectful depiction of vegetarianism in animation I've seen even if Lisa is hardly portrayed as being in the right or anything! It just feels authentic and I can see myself in there even if I avoid any animal product, not just meat. Gonna make seitan today actually hehe.
Tbh I also love whenever Moe gets to do anything cuz I love him so much. Wiggum also.
Of course there's also Days of Wine and D'ohses which is a huge episode for me, because of how it focuses on Barney and his struggle with alcoholism. I see a lot of myself in him as a character, mostly in the thing of nobody taking him seriously but then he goes and does the thing anyway. Also he's damn cute. It made me cry when I first saw it.
Less pleased with the later ep She Used To Be My Girl because we're meant to believe he had a deep meaningful relationship to this one-episode-wonder guest-star lady who just hogs the spotlight and all we get to see is one kissing session and that they proceed to have pity sex. Boo! If they're so insistent on not making him openly bi, I'd rather Barney get back with his art girlfriend Kako (or Yoko, for writers who forget they renamed her) tbh cuz it'd be cute.... wuhhhh I love Barney I want more of him all the time everywhere

The Simpsons Ultimate Showdown!
Round 3: WAYLON SMITHERS VS JIMBO, DOLPH, & KEARNEY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Waylon Smithers TidBit: Several of the allusions to Smithers's sexuality have turned into battles with the network censors. For example, in Smithers's fantasy of a naked Mr. Burns popping out of a birthday cake in "Rosebud", the censors had not wanted Mr. Burns to be naked. Another example is "Marge Gets a Job", which has a dream sequence where Smithers is sleeping and Burns flies through a window. The sequence shows Burns flying towards him and Smithers looking happy, but originally it went on for a few seconds longer. It had to be trimmed down due to scenes that showed "Mr. Burns land[ing] in a particular position on Smithers's anatomy".
Jimbo, Dolph, & Kearney TidBit: Kearney owns a car (even though he rode the school bus on "A Milhouse Divided", "The Mook, the Chef, the Wife, and Her Homer", and "How the Test Was Won"), regularly shaves, has custody of a child from a divorce, is old enough to vote in a general U.S. election, was sent to prison (though "Marge Be Not Proud" and "Lisa the Skeptic" depicted Kearney in juvenile hall), and pays taxes.

Combing through seasons 1 through 3
I went through episode summaries on Wikipedia and Real Jims videos on YouTube.
Season 1
Season 1 has a lot of charm, but I think it's ultimately too incongruent with the rest of the show.
Homer's Odyssey is an interesting option, as it gets very dark with the suicidal ideation, and provides back story for how Homer got his improbable job, but that's not something that I think needs explanation. Other episodes are indisputably classic, but I don't think they're essential to what the show would become.
Season 2
Season two has some strong considerations.
The season premiere, Bart Gets an F, is a great example of Bart struggling. I think the character is at his best when he tilts more towards being a kid who is struggling, who gets bullied, who can't stay out of trouble, and is trying to understand how to navigate the world. Some of the darkest years of the Simpsons lean on into Bart being "cool" and it's really painful to me. Bart Gets an F is absolutely a vibe that I want to include, but I think it's much better captured by episodes like New Kid on the Block or Bart Sells His Soul. Even Bart vs. Thanksgiving a couple episodes later might be a stronger option.
The Way We Was is one of, if not the first, flashback episode. I want to include one, even though they're generally not the strongest, but I'm leaning towards And Maggie Makes Three, although I might need to rewatch to get a good sense how how good these episodes actually are, both overall and compared to each other.
There is a LOT of Mr Burns in Season 2, and I love that. I want Mr Burns to be a big part of my arc, but I'm not sure how much space I can really dedicate to him. I'm tentatively set on Last Exit to Springfield, Flying Hellfish, and Who Shot Mr Burns as a kind of Burns Trilogy. I think he's at his best as an intermittent character, and I don't think any of his Season 2 episodes touch those, and that's not even counting Rosebud, which will be really hard to pass up.
A brief aside on the Mr Burns arc
I think I really like the idea of Mr Burns getting his first starting role in Last Exit to Springfield. He just exists as the boss, and Homer only interacts with him because he falls into his union position.
Flying Hellfish then makes his connection to the Simpsons personal, and Who Shot Mr Burns turns the town against him.
Very roughly it's
Mr Burns vs his workers
Mr Burns vs Abe / The Simpsons
Mr Burns vs the Town
I like the idea of presenting him more as an overarching villain, and less personal to the Simpsons.
An aside within the aside, I'm very skeptical that I'll use any Sideshow Bob episodes. Cape Feare is the creme de la creme, but I feel his episodes are too sequential, and too many of the entries are weak to bother with it. I expect some people would find this an inexcusable, glaring omission, but he pales in comparison to Mr Burns as THE antagonist.
Back to Season 2
Lisa's Substitute. This is the first episode in the show that feels like a must include. I'm not 100% it will fit in, but it would be tough to pass up. It's an incredibly strong episode, makes a strong statement on who Lisa is and how she fits into her family and Springfield, and has a fun b-plot that helps build up the world of Springfield Elementary. I'm not sure there's a better episode to establish Lisa early on (early in my season that is), and I love the symmetry of having this heartbreaking episodes early, and wrapping up Lisa's arc with Summer of 4 ft. 2 as my quasi-series finale. Plus, Sam Etic guest stars.
Season 3
The final phase of "early" Simpsons, where we're on the cusp of greatness. We're so close, but we're not quite in the definitive era.
Homer Defined isn't my favourite episode (I think it was heavily in Global's syndication package for a while), but does a strong job of establishing the Nuclear Plant, and having a sad sack Bart B-plot. This is very weak contention for my series premiere.
Flaming Moe's, Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk [sic], Radio Bart, and Homer at Bat are all classic, solid memorable episodes that don't quite feel essential. I could see any of them filling a slot, but I'm not sure any of them are needed.
Colonel Homer is the first Marge/Homer marriage troubles episode that I've seriously considered. I definitely want at least one (I think Secrets of a Successful Marriage is my frontrunner right now) and the songs are 10/10, but I don't think Marge is nearly fleshed out enough in this episode to deliver on that theme.
Season 1 to 3 Wrap-Up
I've got one very strong candidate in Lisa's Substitute, a couple considerations for role players, and a handful of episodes on hand for filler. Season 4 is where this is gonna get tough.

High Hopes in Popular Culture
85th Academy Awards – The song was performed by Seth MacFarlane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Daniel Radcliffe during the 2013 Academy Awards ceremony
The Rat Pack – A customized version of the song is performed by the Rat Pack, consisting of Frank Sinatra (portrayed by Ray Liotta), Dean Martin (Joe Mantegna), Sammy Davis Jr. (Don Cheadle), Peter Lawford (Angus MacFadyen) and Joey Bishop (Bobby Slayton), at a fundraiser for John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential election campaign
The Simpsons (episode 1F01 "Rosebud") – Principal Skinner, voiced by Harry Shearer, sings the song with a mob
A Goofy Movie - During the road trip Max turns on the radio to listen to acid rock music then Goofy puts in a 8-track tape and sings along to the song "High Hopes". But Max switches it back to acid rock music and Goofy switches it back to the song. They fight over the radio causing the 8-track tape to spit out parts of the taping and the radio to explode while Max declares that they don't have any music to listen to now
Rocky Balboa – The announcers play the original 1959 recording of the song on the loudspeakers when Rocky Balboa enters the ring. He at first doubts when hearing the song that his brother-in-law "Paulie Pennino" has chosen, but later says "He's very good, Sinatra
Osmosis Jones (2011) - The Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School kids sing the song on a school bus. Among them are Hector Cruz (Miles Heizer), Christine Kolchuck (Miley Cyrus), and Mayor Paul Spryman (Michael Cimino).
Muppets Tonight (episode 207 "Rick Moranis") – While telling Seymour and Pepe that they need to have skill, patience and high hopes, Moranis begins singing the song. However, Seymour interrupts by smashing the ant, who later taken in an ambulance prompting Moranis to continue singing including the ant's injury in the lyrics ("That dead ant had high hopes/Before you smashed him, he had high apple pie in the sky hopes.")
Ramona Quimby, Age 8 – In chapter 1, Ramona's dad sings the song's chorus with rather nonsensical lyrics that he came up with himself
High Hopes theme tune – a version played on a harp is used for the opening and closing credits
The Middle (S3E14 "Hecking It Up" – the Heck family sings the song in the car to cheer up Sue

August 10th, An actual Redux
Decided to return to my deleted post early. Talked about 3 things I liked about 'Citizen Kane'. 1. The Cockatoo. I like slow movies, a movie can be slow and paced well, especially given how fast a lot of newer videos on the internet are. But, by 90 minutes in, I was a little tired. The Cockatoo woke me right up. 2. 'The Simpsons'. It was cool seeing just how much of the film 'The Simpsons' referenced, especially with Mr. Burns. The Vaudeville number? Wow. But it was also interesting seeing what had escaped general pop culture. Last year I watched 'The Planet of the Apes', LOVED IT, and found it really interesting that the first quarter, the human sci-fi exploration part, was never referenced. Less so with 'Citizen Kane' given how it is the most overanalysed film, but I thought it was going to be focused a lot more on politics. Didn't know it was going to be non-linear and a focus on the ethics of journalism, which as we all know was what gamergate was really about (sarcasm). So yeah! 3. Plot Hole. In 'Toy Story', Buzz is a toy who doesn't think he is one. How does he know to act dead when a human appears? This is a plot hole I hear mentioned a lot. I have 2 things to say about it. a) It's very easy to rationalise. If you were on a strange planet, would you act like the friendly locals in a situation you perceive as dangerous to mitigate said danger? b) I'm a very particular person, I can focus on minor details like this that can take me out of the movie a bit. But if you can rationalise it with one line like I have, does it really ruin your enjoyment of the film? Does this ONE detail ruin it? I don't think so. The first scene of 'Citizen Kane' features the titular character dying. He says "Rosebud", drops a snow globe, and the nurse comes in later, covers him up, and takes him away. Who heard him say "Rosebud"? The Butler did. He said so right before telling his story. Granted, this happened right before the Cockatoo so it's easy to forget. But to have this kind of criticism you'd have to engage with the film pretty deeply and for the most overanalysed film, it's kind of embarrassing that this is a common criticism. Again, it's one detail. You're going to let THAT ruin your enjoyment? That was the first half. I think it was 3 times longer but c'est la vie. Anyways, the next section needs the start otherwise it doesn't make sense. I can't remember how I led into it so it's going to be a bit jarring.
We might have to move house at the end of the year. I really don't want to. My mum says that it won't change anything but I severely disagree. It will change everything, travel, interaction etc. It makes all the effort she's put "renovating" the house the past year or so pointless. But without a second full-time income we just don't have the resources to pay. I've offered to give half of my income but she doesn't want me to spend do that because I'll be worse of the future. I understand that but I'd still like to help out. I don't think having to move is fair. I really hope if we do have to move, it's still within this district. Recently, I started a new job. It involves working with children and I love it. I think I get along with people outside of my age range. And besides for a few people at my employment level, everyone is outside of said range. It's a much better alternative than lounging about at school, hoping that a friend has some time off from their "busy" schedule. My friends at Tertiary school I made back in Secondary school. They are all STEM students and all they do is complain (I get the irony). But they put themselves in this situation. No one forced them. The ones who have been pressured by their parents are the ones who don't complain. And it's so hard to have a conversation with any of them. Either they complain about school work, or they can only talk about one specific interest. It's like being forced to attend a lecture on a topic is uninteresting and told in a way that is unengaging. I don't mean to sound like a dick. I don't need to talk about the themes of 'Catcher in the Rye' or Hegelian Dialectics, but fucking rocks?! There's a friend of mine who for a month straight, whenever there was a moment of silence he would just talk about the different types of rocks. And that was it. It would be like if I just described how much screen time each Simpsons character had. And that's it. There's no meaning. And I know this guy can be a really engaging speaker. He did a 20 minute talk on how science can be hard to initially engage students. Beforehand, I did not care about the plight of the scienceman but by god if it wasn't one of the best things a peer did. But just talking about rock types or the different costumes of a Genshin character does not cut it for an engaging conversation. And I think part of it has to do with their hatred of English and the Humanities. I am often the butt of jokes because of my choice of studying, how easy it is, how childish it is. They often envy my life (I guess? don't know how else to phrase it) because of my "lucky" timetable. It wasn't lucky, I carefully planned it out so I had enough time to work and also have fun outside of both avenues of work. And I love my job! My friends envy me on a surface level. They see me walking about without any stress and they say "oh, wow I wish I could be as care-free and innocent as you". And then I describe the work I have to do for school, analysis of media sometimes, and my job and they say "oh, I could never do that". I know you can't! You're you and I'm me. I made my choices and I am happy with them. Why can't you be? Anyways, that's it. I will have more to say on their hatred of English another. Also forgot to reinclude my random thought about if video games are high art, another thing I will discuss at a later time. This isn't the end though, my previous entry is the "conclusion" to this. Now I got to run along and write a gratitude letter for someone. Lame!

Meet The Shot Blast Media Team: Our Favourite Movies
The Shot Blast Media team are a small, experienced and captivated team who are incredibly passionate about bringing creativity to the video production industry. In this blog , you will learn about the team’s favourite movies, why they enjoy working in the video production industry, and a little bit more about their career background! Lotty Wiltshaw , Director, formed Shot Blast Media in 2012 with one purpose in mind: to produce corporate videos that would go above and beyond a simple portrayal of what her clients do. Lotty specialises in creative storytelling by using a multitude of skills acquired over a career which spans many years in video creation & production. Lotty’s previous years of experience working across Television Production for the BBC has also helped push her creative production skills forward as Director at Shot Blast Media. When she’s not working, she loves adventures. Lotty is always looking for a new city or country to explore, taking in the scenery, enjoying the food and getting involved with the local arts and music, as well as spending quality time with her family. What is your favourite film? My favourite film is Shawshank Redemption. It’s a fantastic story. Very moving with compelling characters and sends out a message of hope. Well written, well acted and well filmed too. All round perfect movie in my eyes. What do you like about working in the video production industry? We get to tell lots of stories, our own and other peoples whilst getting behind the scenes of businesses and seeing things we don’t often get to see. That’s exciting! Steph Taylor , Sales & Business Development Manager, has more than 14 years of experience working across sales and business development in a variety of large corporations, such as Experian and Virgin Pulse. Steph joined Shot Blast Media in 2023, and works towards promoting our video production packages and other popular video services. What is your favourite film? My favourite film is Shawshank redemption because the story is gripping yet heartwarming. The main character alongside Morgan Freeman works so well and I love a happy ending. I do enjoy a good underdog story so my second favourite is Erin Brockovich. What do you like about working in the video production industry? Early days into my experience here at SBM, I enjoy supporting companies to bring their products and culture to life via video production. Video’s tell the story so well, bringing creativity and personality together. Short, snappy and engaging!! David Mead , Camera Operator and Editor, is an accomplished and innovative filmmaker with 20 years of experience, specialising in video editing, camera operating and directing. He has been working with Shot Blast Media for the past 6 years, bringing to life every client brief, from script to screen projects of all shapes and sizes. What is your favourite film? I hate this question! So lets put a spin on it, what’s the 1 desert island disc I would take… The Simpsons Season 5. The peak of the golden era! I’ve seen all these episodes countless times, the opening 5 episodes are all 10/10, it’s hard to find another 5 in a row this good. Homer’s Barbershop Quartet, Cape Feare, Homer Goes to College, Rosebud and the best, Treehouse of Horror IV, including the segment Terror at 5 and half feet, where a Gremlin attacks the school bus. This was the inspiration for a short film I made with a puppet and CGI Gremlin a few years ago called Turn Around When Possible, which had over 2 million views. Go check it out! This series also includes my favourite all time episode. Boy Scoutz ‘n the Hood. I could recite the entire script for you if you wanted. It’s just one hilarious gag after another. Homer is in fine form. GET ME 700 KRUSTY BURGERS! The Simpsons in general has always been one of my favourite things to watch (only season 3-9, that story is for a different day). Huge sense of nostalgia with every watch. Themes of family values mixed with a bit over the top mayhem with countless brilliant characters is just bliss. What do you like about working in the video production industry? Going to all sorts of places and meeting all sorts of people. Every week is different which keeps everyone on their toes. I’ve travelled to places far and wide across the UK, Europe and North America on projects. Places I would have never gone doing another job. Getting to use new equipment is always fun and finding ways to make each project better than the last. Maddy Goddard , Marketing Executive, works to bring creativity to Shot Blast Media’s social channels. She graduated from the University of Leeds in 2021 with a degree in Film, Photography and Media, and her years of experience in the marketing industry means she is ideally focused on brand awareness and lead generation for the business. Maddy previously worked in Marketing for various recruitment firms across Leeds, and was extremely excited to start her role within her dream industry; video production. What is your favourite film? I would have to say that Madagascar is my favourite film. Madagascar 2 is a pretty close second though… It’s my go-to film on my birthday and it never fails to make me laugh. I also cannot wait to watch the stage musical of Madagascar soon…. Some may say that this is a kids film, however these people would be WRONG. What do you like about working in the video production industry? I have wanted to work in the video industry since I was in school, so it’s fantastic that I’ve been able to fulfil that dream. I absolutely love working in this industry. There is something different happening every week and I’ve learnt a whole bunch of new filmmaking skills since working at Shot Blast Media. Byron Sheldon , Camera Operator and Editor, joined Shot Blast Media after finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking from Leeds Beckett University in 2022. Byron focuses on working on the company’s monthly video subscription service, in which he films and edits unique and memorable videos for a range of businesses across Yorkshire. What is your favourite film? Hot Fuzz holds a special place in my heart, and it’s no surprise why. I’m a massive fan of the dynamic duo, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Their comedic brilliance and on-screen chemistry have never failed to put a smile on my face! And let’s not forget the icing on the cake – Edgar Wright, the genius director behind this cinematic gem. Here’s a fun tidbit about me: When I was younger, I dreamt of joining the police force! And that’s precisely why “Hot Fuzz” resonates so deeply with me. It’s a perfect blend of thrilling action and hilarious comedy, all within the context of law enforcement. Watching the film brings back memories of my childhood aspiration and sparks a sense of adventure every time! What do you like about working in the video production industry? One day, you might find us delving 100 metres underground, capturing breathtaking shots in unexpected locations. The next day, we could be perched on majestic mountaintops, filming electric trucks zooming by! This industry brings with it an exciting mix of challenges and endless possibilities, allowing me to bring my creative vision to life in ways they never imagined. Let us know what your favourite film is! Find out more about the Shot Blast Media team . Learn more about our video services .
