“cinnamon girl"
MIGUEL O'HARA x READER warnings: none that disastrous, mention of piercings, biting and blood (harmless, but hot) words: 2,598
Miguel is busy working, trying to focus on tasks at hand when you walk in the office space and suddenly, all he can think about is why you smell so good. He can’t get your fragrance out of his mind, which drives him to give in to his infatuation…
As Miguel sat diligently at his desk in the bustling headquarters of the Spider Society, he immersed himself in his work. Surrounded by the hum of activity and the glow of computer screens, he focused intently on the tasks at hand. With his attention fixed on the reports and footage in front of him, Miguel was determined to meet his self-imposed deadlines and excel in stabilising the multiverse.
Behind him, Jess and Gwen discussed their latest mission. As radiant as ever, Jess flaunted her expertise on Gwen, who absorbed every last detail with admiring eyes gawking at her. Somewhere in the corner, Pavitr and Hobie lurked in the shadows, contemplating yet another political firecracker Hobie had ignited between the two. Peter sat on one of the couches, exhausted from having to run after Mayday, who had been confined to her seat surrounded by a labyrinth of webs. The hubbub was lively, and somewhat productive.
Miguel hoped for a break in the stagnancy. He reminded Lyla to send alerts to everyone, instructing them to work, but to no avail. It seemed that everyone had taken one long break. Well, everyone except Miguel, who had not rested for two whole nights, his eyes half-lidded and brow tensed.
But amidst the controlled chaos of the office, something unexpected disrupted his concentration. A delicate fragrance, sweet and intoxicating, began to waft through the air, catching the attention of his spidey senses like a gentle whisper. The scent was so enchanting, so captivating, that it transported his thoughts to a place far removed from the monotony of his workplace. The aroma of cinnamon, coconut, and vanilla trickled through his nose and smudged his mind into a fog of nothing.
Intrigued by the allure of the aroma, Miguel glanced around, trying to discern its origin. He followed the scent with his senses, his focus shifting away from the computer screen and onto the ethereal fragrance. It seemed to be emanating from the far end of the office, teasing him with its enigmatic presence.
You walked in, eyes fixed on your iPad, tapping away furiously, as if racing towards the finish line. You could barely see what or who was in front of you and bumped into Gwen, pushing her into Jess, which Gwen obviously didn't mind.
"Honey, watch where you're going, yeah? One of these days, you're going to leap of some edge..." Jess muttered affectionately.
Redirecting yourself, you began walking in the other direction, almost missing the corner of the coffee table, which Peter managed to cover and soften with a blob of web.
Miguel watched you from his vantage point, wading through the numerous obstacles, including Pavitr and Hobie who had managed to hold themselves in some unsolicitedly intricate Yoga pose. As if under a spell, his mind wandered, captivated by the intoxicating scent that seemed to possess a magnetic pull over him. His eyes glazed over you, no longer registering the rows of desks or the symphony of typing keyboards. Instead, his imagination conjured images. Images he never would've visualised were it not for the fact that after all these months of you working for him, he hadn't notice how beautiful you were. Was it your perfume? Or did it just take him this long to fully notice you.
Miguel had spent countless hours working side by side with you. You shared the same office space, exchanged occasional pleasantries, and collaborated on projects. You'd helped him analyse data and organise it. He had never seen you. He simply took you for another helper. You, a human, hired for your impeccable work ethic and skills, were simply a resource to him. But all that changed when he saw you in your element. Did you always smell this great?
It was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing a captivating sight he had somehow overlooked. Your silky, flowing hair cascaded gracefully through a ponytail, framing a face that radiated warmth and intelligence. Your eyes, deep and expressive, looked so sensual whenever they focused on something. The way you would bite your lip when you came across information you didn't understand, the way you'd tuck strands of hair behind your face, but they'd never stay there, the was your neck arched to look up at the screens, revealing your collarbones and the pearls that rested on them, the way your loose buttoned up tops would slightly give away the view inside, the way your your trousers hugged your curves perfectly, the arch of your feet when you took off your shoes to sit comfortably on the couch now made Miguel mesmerised and entranced. He marvelled at how he had been blind to this captivating presence for so long, consumed by the mundane routines of their shared workspace.
As Miguel watched you interact with colleagues, he noticed the genuine kindness that infused your conversations. You effortlessly put others at ease with your compassionate words and infectious laughter. The more he observed, the deeper he fell under your spell, unable to tear his eyes away from your captivating aura.
Yet, even as his heart soared, doubt crept in. Miguel wondered if his sudden infatuation was a fleeting illusion, a trick played by his own desires. Maybe he was just exhausted and needed to sleep.
Shaking his head, he forced himself to look away from you and went back to work. Surely the multiverse was more important than his momentary crush on you.
As the day wore on, Miguel's infatuation with you continued to grow, his thoughts consumed by your presence. Feeling the need for a brief respite, he decided to take a quick water break, hoping to clear his mind and regain focus. He made his way to the lobby, where a small coffee cart stood, offering a momentary escape from the office routine.
As Miguel approached the cart, his attention was diverted by a figure standing nearby. It was you, engaged in a conversation with another colleague. Something about your demeanour caught his eye, a certain grace that commanded attention.
"Ay, dios mío, por favor..." he mumbled to himself, palming his creased forehead.
You looked back, glad to see Miguel out of his seat. You were hoping he would take breaks more often. The man worked for 24 hours. If a day was made up of 38, he would work for 38 hours.
"It's nice to see you out here... in the plebeian world..." you said jokingly, not meaning to practically throw it at his face.
Miguel didn't know whether to reply or to claw away at the walls and escape. Even your voice was a delight to hear. It was like you aroused all five of his senses. Slowly, he made his way to you, hoping to chug the whole water canister and not speak for God forbid what comes out of his mouth if he's left to his own devices.
The colleague who was with you took one look at a fatigued Miguel, said God's name, and chose to march in the opposite direction.
"What would you like? Coffee? Tea? Whatever that green thing is at the back?" you asked.
Your perfume. That's what I'd like, he thought to himself.
"Uh... Coffee."
"Milk and sugar?" you asked sweetly.
"Just throw it in," he said. He couldn't take it anymore. The alluring scent of your perfume, it enveloped Miguel's senses, and he couldn't help but inhale deeply, the fragrance permeating every fibre of his being. It was a fragrance so intoxicating, so enticing, that it seemed to possess a magical quality.
He gave in to that tiny part of him and stepped closer, standing behind you, watching you press the buttons on the coffeemaker. AS gently as he could, he lowered his head and breathed in. The combination of cinnamon, coconut, and vanilla in her perfume was an intoxicating symphony that danced around Miguel's senses, leaving him spellbound and yearning for more.
The warmth of cinnamon caressed his olfactory receptors, infusing him with a sense of comfort and familiarity. The spicy notes seemed to ignite a spark within him, igniting a fire of passion and igniting a newfound energy that fuelled his infatuation.
Coconut, with its tropical essence, added a touch of exoticism to the fragrance. As the scent mingled with the air, it invoked a sense of freedom, inviting him to embrace the spontaneity of life and the possibility of new beginnings.
And then there was vanilla, the sweetest and most alluring note of all. Its creamy and comforting aroma wrapped Miguel in a tender embrace, evoking a sense of intimacy and tenderness. It awakened his senses to the depth of his emotions, stirring a yearning for connection and a longing to explore the depths of his infatuation.
How could a stupid perfume make him act like that?
He regained composure and stepped back slightly. He watched you watch the machine pour coffee in a small cup. His eyes fell on your pierced ears. He got a feeling that you liked pain, in an adventurous way. Four piercings were after all a lot.
"Here," you said, handing him his cup. In his hands, the size of it shrunk dramatically.
Miguel took it, his fingers brushing past yours, which didn't help his plan of resistance at all. With each sip he took of that ridiculously sweet beverage, his need to consume you grew. He clutched the cup tightly, hoping his mind would find something else to focus on. He almost wished an anomaly would come and wreck the room. Lost in thoughts, he held the cup so tightly that it broke into pieces, splashing the coffee around and lo-and-behold, on your top.
"Fuck... I-" before he could apologise, you interjected and began dabbing tissues on your chest.
"That's okay. It happens. With you people. I guess. I think. I concur. I'll just... Go to the washroom," you said.
"Yes. This way," Miguel replied, leading you to the nearest washroom. He had no idea why he was going with her. She knew where it was. Why was he with her?
She opened the door to the washroom, walking over to the basin, leaning over it, and splashed some water on her top.
Unbeknownst to him, Miguel had followed her in and now stood behind her, trying his hardest to pull his gaze away from her chest, which was glistening with water droplets.
"You good?" you asked, looking at his reflection in the mirror.
He couldn't resist the temptation any longer. He reached out and took your wrist in his hand, holding it gently but firmly. He lifted it to his nose and took a deep breath, savouring the scent of her perfume. It was intoxicating, and he felt himself getting lost in it.
"What is this?" he asked.
"What?"
"Your perfume. It's fucking ridiculous. Why does it smell so good?"
You let out a soft chuckle. "It's just a body splash... Why-" you couldn't finish your sentence because of what Miguel started to do.
As he held your wrist, he realised how smooth your skin felt against his fingers. He couldn't resist the urge to touch her more. Slowly, he let go of your wrist and placed his hand on her neck, feeling the softness of your skin. He leaned in, inhaling her scent, and felt a rush of desire wash over him. He was going insane over how good you smelled, how smooth your skin felt against his. Feeling your skin rise with goosebumps satisfied the animal in him. Like a bloodhound, he buried his nose in the crook of your neck, inhaling as much as he could, his hand still tenderly caressing your arm, running his fingertips up and down.
He knew he shouldn't be doing this, but he couldn't help himself. She was like a drug to him, and he was addicted. He felt his self-control slipping away, and he knew that he was in danger of losing everything he had worked so hard to achieve. He tried to pull away, to regain his focus, but it was too late. He had already crossed a line, and he couldn't go back.
"Dios mío, hueles tan bien..." he whispered in your ear, feeling you shudder.
He smiled, and continued whispering sweet nothings in your ear. "Eres tan hermosa. No sabes lo que me estás haciendo, verdad?" He closed his eyes and let his body react to you. He snaked his arm around your waist, pulling you closer and trapping you between the basin and his body.
"I have no idea what you're saying but..." you paused to take a deep breath.
"Mmm? Qué pasó, mi chica canela?" his voice reverberated in your ear like a rattling bass and that silenced you from thinking.
You shook your head, and mumbled, "Nothing... don't stop."
"I don't plan to." He leaned in, his lips brushing against yours. You, completely drunk on how Miguel made you feel, responded eagerly, your arms wrapping around his neck as he held you closer.
He couldn't get enough of you, the taste of your lips, the feel of your body against his. As your lips met, a rush of electricity shot through his body. He pulled you closer, leaving next to no space between you, his hands sliding down your back as he deepened the kiss. He untucked your top from your trousers and slowly unbuttoned your shirt.
"Don't throw it on the floor... It's expensive," you muttered in between kisses.
"I'll buy you ten more."
Feeling you smile into the kiss, Miguel growled, his grip on your waist tightening. He was indebted to that coffee stain for he would never have been in this situation were it not for that. As you pulled away for a bare moment, Miguel stared into your eyes, his heart racing. He knew that he was in too deep, that he had gone too far. But he couldn't bring himself to care. All that mattered was you, your scent, your touch, your kiss. He knew that he was putting everything he had worked for at risk, but he couldn't help himself.
"Mierda, quiero morderte, nena..."
"Hmm?" you asked, tilting your head oh so conveniently.
Miguel inhaled sharply and looked up at the ceiling. Did you really just do that? he thought.
He cocked his head and looked down at your innocent face. He wasn't a person who'd ever ask for anyone's permission, but seeing you be so vulnerably beautiful made him do it anyway...
"Can I bite you?"
He half expected you to run away. So, when your eyes glinted with and approving excitement, he was surprised, to say the least. He wasted no time holding your face in his palm and tilting your head, exposing your neck already pampered with his kisses. His dug his fangs into the soft flesh, feeling ecstatic, as if he was transported to another dimension.
All of his senses were heightened. Your perfume, the feel of your skin, you soft gasps, the taste of your blood, and the sight of your figure reacting to him in the mirror, sent Miguel to heaven. You were simply divine.
Miguel O'Hara had never wished for a more opportune break from his work and he was sure to take some more henceforth.

IELTS Listening Practice: How To Beat The Accent Game

Improving your IELTS Listening skills, especially in dealing with various accents, requires focused practice and strategies. Here are some tips to help you “beat the accent game” in the IELTS Sri Lanka Listening test:
Familiarise Yourself with Different Accents
Listen to Various English Accents: Expose yourself to different accents (British, American, Australian, Canadian, etc.) by watching films, TV shows, or listening to podcasts and radio stations, or through recordings available at the IELTS classes you attend.
Use Online Resources: Websites like BBC Learning English and TED Talks often feature speakers with diverse accents.
Practice with IELTS-Specific Materials
Official IELTS Practice Tests: Use official practice materials that include recordings from different accents, which are offered through IELTS online classes, as well as physical classes.
Listening Exercises: Websites like IELTS Liz and IELTS Simon offer listening exercises that can help you get accustomed to the exam format.
Develop Note-Taking Skills
Practice Taking Notes: While listening, jot down key points, especially names, numbers, and specific information. This can help you follow along and answer questions accurately.
Summarise Information: After listening to a clip, try to summarise what you heard. This will reinforce your understanding.
Improve Your Vocabulary
Focus on Common Themes: IELTS often covers similar topics (e.g., education, environment, travel). Build vocabulary around these themes.
Learn Synonyms: Understanding synonyms can help you recognize answers even when they’re phrased differently.
Work on Listening for Specific Information
Practice Listening for Keywords: In each recording, listen for keywords or phrases that signal important information.
Understand Context: The context can often give clues about what to expect, so pay attention to the tone and setting of the conversation.
Simulate Exam Conditions
Timed Practice: Practice listening exercises within the time constraints of the IELTS exam to build your stamina and concentration.
Follow Directions Carefully: Pay attention to the instructions for each section, as they can guide you on what to focus on.
Review Your Mistakes
Analyse Practice Tests: After completing a listening test, review your mistakes. Understanding why you got an answer wrong can help you avoid similar mistakes in the future.
Focus on Difficult Areas: Identify specific accents or types of questions you struggle with and spend extra time practicing those.
Stay Calm and Focused During the Test
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Stress can impact your listening ability, so practice deep breathing or visualisation techniques to stay calm.
Keep Track of Time: Be mindful of the time and pace yourself during the test to ensure you don’t rush through any part of it.
By implementing these strategies and dedicating time to practice, you will enhance your ability to understand different accents and improve your overall performance in the IELTS Listening test. IELTS Sri Lanka course fees are quite affordable, and hence it is highly advisable to follow such a class before taking the exam, so that you are fully prepared.

WHAT DOES A FASHION STYLIST DO?
The stylist role is extremely varied. As a stylist, it is possible to be working on an almost endless number of projects, from professional photoshoots, magazine features, advertising campaigns, music videos, album covers, TV show appearances, stage outfits for a tour or red carpet events or even as a wardrobe stylist for a movie or TV show, creating costumes for characters alongside a costume designer.
Considering the amount of jobs you could possibly be involved in, it’s no surprise that to be successful, you’ll need to know the fashion industry like the back of your hand.
Here is a break down of the main roles and skills that may be included in stylist job descriptions:
STAYING ON TOP OF TRENDS.
Spending a significant amount of time researching is essential in order to stay on top of trends in the styling world, moreover, it will also be required for you to analysing the current industry landscape to predict future trends, which is an important aspect of the job as clients want to be on top of or ahead of trends.
To allow yourself to keep on top of what’s going on in fashion and culture you’ll need to watch runway shows, visit brand showrooms and attend fashion industry events. Moreover, having a good knowledge and understanding of the history of fashion could also help your career. Building a network of designers and brands can help you develop an expert level knowledge of products.
IDEATION AND PRESENTATION OF LOOKS.
A brief will usually be given to a stylist when approached for a project, including; what event the look is for, the kind of style/aesthetic to be achieved and any other requirements.
Creating mood boards to curate ideas for you client can help you visualise a look or inspiration. You should also be prepared to add additional context, reasons behind your choices whilst taking into account their ideas.
Styling, truly is a collaborative process.
PRODUCT SOURCING.
Once you’ve finalised your ideas having a network of brands and retailers which you can work closely with can help turn you ideas into a reality. You will need contact PR agents, brand showrooms and designers; finding, borrowing and buying clothes, shoes and accessories to bring an outfit together.
A focus on sustainability in the fashion industry, has also brought a new parallel to this aspect of styling. Many stylists will now also need to be comfortable sourcing vintage items and looking through designer archives, whilst still managing to create a fresh and on-trend look.
CONSULTATION.
Much of styling involves working with other departments therefore providing consultation and advice can help them achieve a desired end result. It may also help to consult with art directors on photoshoots, helping to implement their vision for the shoot through the looks you put together. You may also have to work with hair and makeup teams, and models to provide direction that will allow the correct message to be conveyed visually.
PERSONAL SHOPPING.
Another part of a stylist job is personal shopping which sees you work one on one with a client in a retail setting. During a personal shopping trip, you could either be tasked with finding a singular look for an event, or a complete wardrobe revamp for the upcoming season.
BACKSTAGE SUPPORT.
If you’re styling a photoshoot or fashion show, you’ll have plenty to do backstage. Along with organising all of the looks, you’ll be steaming, pinning, fitting clothes and products to models to make sure they match your vision.
TRAVEL.
In order to put the looks together properly and all necessary adjustments to be made it is important that stylist are on the ground a the shoots/locations. Therefore, it is required for stylist to travel to events and set location although you will also be based in your studio or office.
Not only will you need to travel for photoshoots and events, but you may also need to travel to brand showrooms when sourcing products and to meet clients to discuss the project. Whilst international travel is common in this industry.

Week 9: Reflections
1. Return to the brief you first set for yourself and analyse your progress. How are you progressing?
The initial brief was to document the daily lives of Chinese students in New Zealand through a photography project to help prospective students and their parents better understand what life overseas is really like. A wide range of scenes reflecting the daily lives of international students were successfully captured, such as shopping, cooking, driving, attending academic events and leisure time. The photographs effectively demonstrated the challenges and achievements of the students in their independent lives and provided a realistic portrayal of life. Feedback from the students helped me to clarify the theme and make the project more relevant.
2. Return to the learning matrix - are you where you need to be to achieve your personal learning goals?
Significant progress has been made in mastering shooting in different lighting conditions, capturing dynamic scenes and post-processing to produce high quality images. However, the post-processing needs to be refined, but it is much improved from the initial state.
4.Make a blog post detailing your next major photoshoot with a short description and at least 2-3 visualisations of what it will look like (a shot of the location from google maps, a photoshop mockup, a sketch, a lighting diagram, etc).
This Wednesday, I will have the honour of following an international student and documenting a day in his life, delving into his everyday life in New Zealand. The day will take place at his home and I plan to capture him in his everyday life, from cooking to studying, to relaxing.
I will start with him preparing dinner, documenting how he skilfully combines western and eastern ingredients in the kitchen, showing his passion for food and how cooking eases his homesickness. This is not only a time to showcase his culinary skills, but also a chance to glimpse how he incorporates Chinese culture into his daily life.
Afterwards, I will record his study time, which is the most important part of an international student's daily life. I plan to capture those moments of concentration and endeavour in his study space, whether he is tapping away at the keyboard in front of his laptop or reading a book with a contemplative expression, these images will show his side as a student and his determination and challenge in pursuing his academic achievements.
In the evening, I'll move on to capturing his leisure and recreational activities, whether he's playing video games in his living room, watching a film, or chatting with a friend over video, these moments will show how he balances his studies and life, and how he stays mentally fit and socially active during his study abroad life.

Elevate Analytics workflow with Gemini AI

Data Analytics workflow
Disjointed, difficult, and time-consuming data analysis can yield insights. Data teams spend time ingesting structured and unstructured data, organising it for analysis, and optimising pipelines. They would obviously much rather conduct insights-led decision making and higher-value analysis.
They unveiled Duet AI in BigQuery at Next ’23. This year at Next ’24, Duet AI in BigQuery transforms into Gemini in BigQuery, offering intelligent recommendations to optimise expenses and boost user productivity along with AI-powered experiences for data engineering, preparation, and analytics workflow.
BigQuery’s new AI-powered assistive features and its seamless integration with other Google Workspace products enable their teams to glean insightful information from data.
Google Analytics Workflow
The low-code data preparation tools, automatic code generation features, and natural language-based experiences simplify high-priority analytics workflows, increasing data practitioners’ productivity and freeing them up to concentrate on high-impact projects. Further more, users with different skill sets like their business users can use easier-to-access data insights to make positive changes that promote an inclusive, data-driven culture within they company.” declared Tim Velasquez, Veo’s Head of analytics workflow.
The new Gemini features in BigQuery in more detail.
Use AI to expedite data preparation
Your data quality determines how good your business insights are. Working with sizable datasets sourced from multiple sources frequently results in inconsistent formats, mistakes, and missing data. Cleaning, changing, and organising them can therefore be very difficult.
BigQuery now offers AI-augmented data preparation, which assists users in cleaning and organising their data, making data preparation, validation, and enrichment simpler. Furthermore, they are giving users the ability to reconstruct old BigQuery pipelines or create low-code visual data pipelines.
AI greatly lessens the labour involved in maintaining a data pipeline by helping to identify and fix problems like schema or data drift once the pipelines are operating in production. Users also benefit from integrated metadata management, automatic end-to-end data lineage, and capacity management because the resulting pipelines run in BigQuery.
Launch the journey from data to insights
The majority of data analytics workflow begins with exploration, which includes selecting the appropriate dataset, comprehending the structure of the data, spotting important patterns, and determining which most important insights to extract. This step can be laborious and time-consuming, particularly if you’re a new team member or you’re working with a fresh dataset.
BigQuery’s Gemini offers enhanced semantic search features to help you find the most pertinent tables for your tasks in order to solve this issue. Using Data plex’s metadata and profiling information, Gemini in BigQuery presents pertinent executable queries that you can execute with a single click.
Natural language analytics workflows
Google Cloud are also rethinking the end-to-end user experience to increase user productivity. With the new BigQuery data canvas, you can explore and scaffold your data journeys in a graphical workflow that mimics your mental model. Redesigned BigQuery data canvas uses natural language for data exploration, curation, wrangling, analytics workflow , and visualisation.
For instance, you can use straightforward natural language prompts to find the sources of campaign data, integrate it with current customer data, gain insights, and present visual reports to executives all in one seamless experience when analysing a recent marketing campaign. For a brief introduction to the BigQuery data canvas, watch this video.
Boost output with help with Python and SQL codes
Even seasoned users occasionally find it difficult to recall every nuance of Python or SQL syntax, and it can be intimidating to navigate through a large number of tables, columns, and relationships.
With BigQuery’s Gemini, you can use straightforward natural language prompts to write and edit SQL or Python code while referencing pertinent schemas and metadata. Moreover, you can use BigQuery’s in-console chat interface to use straightforward inquiries like “How can I use BigQuery materialised views?” to explore guides, documentation, and best practices for particular tasks. “How can I consume JSON data?” “How can I enhance the performance of my queries?”
Optimise analytics for swiftness and efficiency
It becomes more difficult for analytics professionals, including data administrators, to efficiently manage capacity and improve query performance as data volumes rise. they are launching suggestions that can help reduce errors, maximise platform expenses, and continuously enhance query performance.
These suggestions will help you determine which materialised views, depending on your query patterns and the partition or clustering of your tables, should be created or removed. Spark pipelines can also be autotuned, and errors and performance problems can be troubleshooted.
With a particular focus on data preparation, analytics workflow itself, and data engineering, Gemini in BigQuery leverages AI to streamline various stages of data analysis. This is how workflows are accelerated by it:

CONTROL YOUR ANGER
Ms. Aanam Verma | Head of Department | Asst. Professor Biological Sciences | CPSM College of Education | Gurugram
HOW TO CONTROL YOUR ANGER | ANGER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES | TIPS TO OVERCOME ANGER

Most people get upset simply because they don't know what to do when they experience anger in their daily life. Sometimes aggressive behaviour may get their needs met in the short-term, but there are long term consequences. Your words might cause lasting damage to the relationship or even lead to its demise. So here by, I will like to share some simple tips how to tackle the ghost of ANGER.
When calm, express the anger

As soon as your thoughts are clear, express your frustration in an assertive but non-confrontational way. You must state your concern and needs in a direct and clear way, without hurting others or trying to control them.
Physical Activities

Physical activity like yoga, stretching, aerobic exercises reduces stress which is the cause root of your anger. Neck rolls and Shoulder rolls are good examples of nonstrenuous yoga like movements, which controls your body and harness your emotions. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or do some enjoyable physical activities like cycling, hit a few golf ball, playing your favourite game.
Relaxation Exercises

There are many relaxation exercises but the key is to find the one that works best for you. Breathing exercises and Progressive muscle relaxation are two common strategies for reducing tension. Your breathing becomes shallower and speeds up as you grow angry. Reverse that trend by taking slow, deep breath from your nose and exhaling out of your mouth for several moments. In Progressive muscle relaxation, try to tense and relax slowly your different muscle groups in your body, one at a time, along with slow deliberate breathe. Eg. Closing tightly & relaxing your fist along with breathe in & out respectively. You can use kids small smiley ball too. Stress balls are also available in the market. Relaxation exercises take practice. At first, you might feel as they are not effective, but with practice, they will.
Warning signs

Be alert & aware of the emerging signs of anger like fast heart beat, red & hot face, clenching of fist, unable to think properly etc., so that you can take control and prevent it to reach the boiling point.
Identify Triggers
Take stock of things that trigger your anger like traffic jams, sarcastic comments, messy room, work not at time etc. You must structure your day differently and prevent the triggers to take place.
Be aware of your feelings
Think critically what real emotions are lurking beneath your anger. Sometimes anger act as a mask to protect you from more painful emotions like embarrassment or disappointment. Acknowledging underlying right emotion can help you to get the root cause of problem. For an example, if someone cancels a plan on which you were so excited, chances are you rush in anger but underlying emotion is disappointment, so you can explain your feelings of disappointment instead of making the scene. Be honest with your feelings, then only you can resolve the issue. Responding in anger just push people away.
Keep your mouth shut
When you are provoked, you may speak rubbish, which will worse the situation rather than any positive result. So, in an argument tightly close your lips as they are pasted. This will help you to take time to collect your thoughts and respond in a mature way.
Repeat a mantra
When your temper flares, repeat a mantra or calming word or phrase, that will help you to calm down and refocus. Repeat that word again and again to yourself when you are upset. ‘Relax’, ‘take it easy’, ‘you will be o.k’ or everything will be fine’ are good examples.
Picture a stop sign
The universal symbol to stop can help you calm down when you are angry. It’s a quick way to help you visualise the need to halt yourself, your actions and walk away from the moment. You can put any symbol on your back of your hand which will remind you to STOP & control your anger.
Find a creative channel
You can turn your anger into a tangible production. Consider digital creativity, painting, writing poetry or journal when you feel upset. What you can't say, perhaps you can write. Jot down what you are feeling and how you want to respond. Processing it through the written words can help you calm down and reassess the events, increases understanding and more possible solutions. Emotions are powerful muscles for creative individuals. Use yours to reduce anger.
Practice Imagination
Just step into a close room, close your eyes, and imagine yourself in a relaxing scene. Focus on the details of the imaginary scene. Colour of shedding leaves.... movement of water….brightness of the rising sun etc. This practice can give you calmness, peace, serenity and of course strength.
Keep a calm down kit
Make collection of objects which helps to engage all your senses. When you can see, hear, smell and touch the calming things you can change your emotional state. So, prepare a calm down kit which may include scented hand lotion, an image of serene landscape or any relaxing scene, Audio- Video spiritual passage or quotes, a few pieces of your favourite candy. Just include all those things that you know will help you to remain calm. You can create a Portable calm down kit that you can take anywhere. For example, calming music and images, guided meditation or instructions for breathing exercises etc. to be stored in a special folder on your smartphone. Keep your bag loaded with hand lotion, perfumed wipes & candies.
Change the focus
The best way to calm down is to change the focus immediately on something else. It’s better to distract yourself with an activity. Do something that requires your focus and makes more challenging for negative thoughts to creep in. For an Example, organising the wardrobe, deep cleaning the kitchen, weeding the garden, sign a petition, write a note to an official etc. Pour your energy and emotions into something thats healthy and productive which keeps your mind occupied and won’t able to ruminate on the things upsetting you.
Listen Music
Let the music carry you away from your frustrated feelings. Put on your earbuds, move to the park or drive the car and listen your favourite music, humming & bopping your anger away.
Countdown
Feeling angry, countdown up to 10. If your anger touching the peak, start slow backward count. By the time you count, your heart rate becomes slow, and your anger subsides slowly.
Sharing with a friend
Instead of whirling in the episodes that made you angry, you must have a long talk with a friend who is trustful, understands you and your all perspectives and also help you to get rid of the problem.
Write a letter or Email
Write a letter or email expressing all the events, even minute emotions which made you angry. After that, delete it. This will help you to release the suppressed emotions and make you at ease.
Rehearse your response
Rehearse what & how you are going to say when the same type problem approaches you. This rehearsal period gives you chance to role play all the solutions coming to your mind.
Practice empathy
Fit in other persons shoes and see the situation from their angle. When you narrate a story according to their perspective, you may gain a new understanding and can overpower your anger. Think like a scientist, not a lawyer
Feel the anger but avoid action
In anger person loses judgement and problem solving skills which makes him rigid & blunt. Ambrose Bierce rightly said “speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret”. Anger drives us to aggress , confront, take revenge and retaliate. It’s better to go to bed angry, before sending angry email keep it for few days, just walk away when fight arises.
Self reflection

Some person are proud of their anger. Even they achieved nothing, they experience a warm inner glow of self satisfaction .They believe they have accomplished something tough, powerful and righteous. But that's not. One must see or hear himself in anger once in life. Tennis great Roger Federer who was a racket smashing brat in his junior years, was watching himself throwing tantrums on TV that put him off of it throughout the life.
Take care of yourself
Factors like alcohol, pain, fatigue, stress, sickness, unmet drives like hunger, thirst, lust, etc. act as a fuel to anger. Reduce these variables as much as possible. Take proper sleep, make routine timetable, take some time off, streamline your week, delegate, relax, and have nutrition rich diet.
Stick with ”I”statements
Criticizm or blame game will always increase tension. So, use ‘I’ statements while presenting the problem. Keep in mind to be specific and warm. Example say ‘I don’t feel good when you leave the table without keeping the plate in sink’ instead of saying ‘you never help in housework.
Take short breaks
Give self short breaks during stressful or overloaded days. A few moments of quiet time will help you feel better, focused and prepare you to handle what’s ahead without getting irritated or angry.
Work on solutions
Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Always remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything and might only make it worse.
Forgiveness
Learn to Forgive. If your anger overpower your positive side, you find yourself dipped in bitter & poisonous fluid. But by forgiving someone who made you upset will make both of you to learn from the situation and strengthen your relationship. If it finds hard to forgive the person who has done wrong to you then imagine to forgive him. This way your anger slip away.
Evaluation of anger

Analyse whether your anger is a friend or an enemy. If you see your right is being violated, you are suffering an unhealthy situation or emotionally abusive toxic relationship, then your anger can do justice. Here, you can change the situation rather than changing your emotional state. Anger gives you the strenghth & courage to take a stand and make the right change. Another case, if your anger is enemy, it will destroy your healthy relationships and make you upset. So, evaluate your anger is positive or negative for you.
Humor, the best medicine
Lightening the situation can diffuse the tension. Humor can give you insight that what’s making you angry or having any unrealistic expectations. Avoid sarcastic comments, it only hurt the feelings and also make situation worse. Diffuse your anger by looking for ways to laugh, whether playing with your kids, watching stand - up, or comedy movie.
Gratitude
End of the day, always be thankful to life, what positive things it has given you, even under hard situations. Just ignore the negative part and enrich more with gratitude for right things in your life. Anger will get no attention & will try to eliminate automatically from your life.
Know when to seek help
Learning to control anger is a big challenge. Seek help or consult a psychologist if your anger seems out of control, causes you to do more harmful things you regret.

Dreaming and Dream Working:
Dreaming on the other hand is the natural release of DMT during the REM sleep cycle which causes us to enter the astral dreamscapes, dreaming is thought to help us process subconscious data gathered in our brains during waking life while we are at rest. Dreams are often plesant and can have an impact on our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing and can also serve to teach us or prewarn us of events, intentions and situations. Dreams however just as with any hallucinogenic trip or as with astral projection can turn into negative experiences known as nightmares where our fears and internal conflicts are brought to light through visualisation and scenarios, likewise when awakening abruptly from REM sleep we may also experience sleep paralysis or night terrors where our body has not woken from resting along with the mind which is still highly dosed on DMT and begins to hallucinate visually in waking reality while unable to move which can lead to traumatic experiences. There are a number of Occult practices surrounding the concept of dreaming, these are as follows:
Dream Interpretations:
Dreams often manifest as strange fantasy realms full of interesting creatures, objects and characters and dreams often have a deeper psychological meaning as it is thought that dreams are the unconscious minds way of processing information. The interpretation of dreams can often be useful in helping to consciously process the information that the dreamscape is attempting to bring into focus, in order to understand the meaning of dreams we must first take into account the personal associations the dream has with specific themes as this can skew the symbology for example a person who is afraid of snakes will likely associate negativity with snakes appearing in their dreams while they might be a more nuetral or positive symbol for another person experiencing a similar dream, on the whole general symbology can be applied to themes, objects, animals, plants and characters within dreams and the meaning can be determined via coupling this symbology with an analysis of the events of the dream. Dream dictionaries are available and some will be of a better quality and more accurate information than others. Dreams are often fleeting and hard to remember and so anyone wishing to work on the dreamscape must endevour to begin by keeping a diary of dreams attempting to record the information as soon after waking as possible so that it can be accurately remembered and more accurately analysed.
Lucid Dreaming:
Lucid dreaming is a rare dreamstate where during a dream the mind becomes conscious of the dream but the body does not wake this enables the experiencer God-like powers over their dreamscape and enables them some control over the direction the dream is taking until the dream inevitably pulls them back into the illusion and they again fall unconscious or until they wake up. Certain stimulation within the dream can trigger lucid dreaming such as falling from very high and landing safetly which can make the mind aware that the dream is taking place, this is known as DILD (Dream Initiated Lucid Dreaming). Certain chemical compounds and hallucination inducing machinary have been manufactured which help to generate lucid dreams there are also a variety of herbal plants that can aid in the endevour which wil be discussed later in our Occult herbology studies. In order to trigger lucid dreaming several techniques have been developed these actually work best when used in conjunction with one another and fit into two catagories; WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dreaming) where the practisioner aims to remain lucid before entering the dreamscape and MILD (Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreaming) where memory techniques are used to create a conscious awareness of dreaming, the first technique involves using a watch during the day to regularly check the time, each time saying or thinking “I can read the watch therefore I am not dreaming” this is because during a dream you may then check the watch only to realise that the information it is giving is senseless or contradictory which will cause your mind to realise “I cant read the watch therefore I am dreaming”. Another technique is called reality testing and it involves the similar process of regularly checking to make sure we are really awake through methods such as the one previously described. Another method involves utilising astral projection meditations and is called MABA (Mind Awake Body Asleep) and is a form of WILD, basically instead of going to sleep normally the practisioner uses astral projection meditation while laying down to induce a conscious dream state. Another MILD technique involves counting backwards from 100 while attempting to fall asleep and thinking “I am going to have a lucid dream” between each number in an attempt to self-hypnotise. Finally there is the Wake-Back-To-Bed technique, this involves using an alarm clock to wake yourself up 4-6 hours after sleeping and then going straight back to sleep which encourages conscious dreaming during the REM sleep cycle. Lucid dreamers recommend keeping dream journals as this helps to create a conscious distinction between dreaming and reality. From my own experiences lucid dreams can have powerful effects on events in reality I once had a lucid dream where I attempted to give a CV to two women who agreed to get back to me about a job, I was woken from that dream by a phone call from a friend I had not spoken to for some time offering me a job, this may be coincidence but I do not tend towards the existence of random unconnected events, therefore I would advise some caution on the side of be careful what you wish for when lucid dreaming. Lucid dreams can also be used within nightmares to face and overcome our fears however it is much harder to stay conscious of the dream when already gripped by fear or other negative emotions and often an unsettling theme within a lucid dream can bring a lucid dreamer back into an unconscious dream state.
Dream Walking:
Dream walking is the process of attempting to psychically invade the dreams of another sleeping person this is done by creating an empathic psychic connection by astral projecting and focusing on that person, it helps to know when that person is asleep as their dreamscape cannot be entered while they are awake. Having achieved an empathic connection by locating or manifesting the persons spiritual likeness on the astral plane we can attempt to use this likeness as a doorway into their unconscious mind stepping through their likeness into their dreamscape where being conscious the practisioner has greater control of the dreamscape. It is much easier to perform dream walking when a strong psychic, spiritual-emotional connection such as love already exists between the dream and the dream walker. My own lover once posted on social media that she was experiencing nightmares which in turn caused me to attempt dream walking to enter her dreams and make them romantic, the next day I watched her post on social media “fallen in love with who I imagined” and “fallen in love with an imaginary you” which in turn solidified my belief that I had been successful, however I advise caution, during the dream I presented her with a green rose symbolic of my heart chakra, the next person she dated had a green rose tattoo, this was not my intended effect and stands as a testiment to the powerful psychological manipulation potentials inherent in dream interpretation and dream walking.
Reoccuring Dreams:
Reoccuring dreams are dreams that have a central theme or characters that are experienced across multiple dreams these dreams are often but not always stress induced and are commonly caused by the brain attempting to discern meaning from some type of problem or to draw attention to some specific key event or detail which once realised breaks the cycle.
Prophetic Dreams:
Prophetic dreams are dreams which have themes or details which later turn out to be true to our reality, that can come as warnings or as psychic intuition of future events, this can in turn be one cause of the sensation of deja vu. Prophetic dreams can be hard to recognise unless they are reoccuring since we do not know which dreams are prophetic until they come to pass however realising that a key theme of a prophetic dream is begining to play out into reality can help us to alter the course of events, becoming skilled in dream interpretation is the only fairly reliable method of begining to understand which dreams are prophetic.

Week 3: Future Thinking Tool Kit & Storytelling with Data
What global misconceptions did you have that were false or true?
The last of eighteen questions based on common misconceptions about The United Nations goals related to the total amount of raw materials used across the world annually, since 2000. I assumed that it stayed about the same but actually it has increased to about 70%. Over half of the people who took this survey got this question wrong. Thus, this alludes to the concern that presumably, most people are probably completely unaware of how bad the worlds state of consumption really is. The resource furthers this concern as the increase of consumption is not due to increasing population but that more people are becoming richer. Research shows that the increase is 3 times higher than the population growth over the past 20years. Ironically said, it seems as if when one problem solves itself, another is created. Which makes me think about my own motives to be wealthy as well as to be more conscious about my own styles of consumption. Ultimately, it is the misconception in itself and trends like buying more from Amazon or places like K-Mart (as a personal example) that are cushioning the major issue like a soft blanket. Not to be naïve, a massive part of the problem is that we think we can’t trust the data when in fact we can (derived from a UN report Gapminder, n.d.), that we don’t know enough or don’t care. The reality is that our current reuse, recycle and reduce or presumable circular economy is way past falling short – by 20 years and at an increased 70% to be exact.
At this rate we’ll run out of natural resources and in doing so, destroy many natural habitats. So, we can say goodbye to our beautiful environmental makeup and say hello to more ‘stuff’.
Not enough people are taking this personally; people should be taking this issue personally. This calls for a lifestyle makeover and not only makes minimalism that much more appealing but then puts the concept of business as the lifeforce of consumption into question. In a quote I read today it said that businesses should never be about making money but that it should be about serving it’s people or else it shouldn’t even exist. I wonder what the future of business would look like in the next 30 years; picture the revitalisation of indigenous concepts of business, less desire for stuff and a fully propelled circular economy. It sounds good but that’s nothing short of a utopia. However, the whole point of this was to become aware and to take this particular issue personally.

Introduction to Data and Storytelling:
Data Visualisation is the graphic representations of data that makes complex information more visible, better accessible, and easier to interpret. We can understand trends, relationships, and patterns between data in more compelling ways when we can visualise it than if we were to view it as a report or in plain writing. Unlike traditional approaches such as report writing, data visualisations primarily use colours, shapes as well as language cues to share information. The cruciality between simplifying or condensing large and complex data is the capability to correctly inform than to mislead. Moreover, the data literacy skillset encourages communicators as well as information receivers to critically assess data sources by combining better reading and understanding with smarter use and communication.
Introduction to the Futures Thinking Toolkit.
The Futures of Thinking Toolkit is interesting because it promotes a way of thinking about the future. The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) uses such design concepts along with a list of others to think about the future of New Zealand. Moreover, in the classroom, it can be a structured way to develop student’s futures thinking skills. This can be used in conjunction with system thinking approaches by observing and speculating mental models for the purpose of understanding past and present behaviours. Essentially, the toolkit supports analysis by offering prompt questions related to the creation of possible, probable, and preferable futures, whilst factoring in wild possibilities, drivers, trends and into the present of a given situation. Due to the fundamental tie and the interconnectedness of arguably all social and environmental problems my team and I chose to base our research on Sustainability and Climate Change in New Zealand. We will do this by first using elements of The Futures Thinking toolkit such as existing Situation, trends, and drivers to analyse impartial futures over the next 30 years.
Provide a documentation of your research issue on Sustainability and Climate Change; categorise your research on, Existing Situation, Trends and Drivers from the Futures Thinking Toolkit.

Ritaban Das: Storyboarding for Effective Storytelling
Character designer, illustrator and storyboard artist, Ritaban Das, elaborates on the significance of storyboarding to effectively tell a story and thus also shares insights from his decade-long experience in animation.

Ritaban Das is a character designer, storyboard artist and illustrator working in the animation industry for the last decade. He’s worked on a wide range of national and international 2D and 3D animated projects for platforms like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Pogo. Recently, he shifted to Toronto, Canada for higher studies, looking to contribute his skills to the Canadian animation industry. He hopes to someday work on his own animated show.
ORDER A CUSTOM ILLUSTRATION
Q. How do you differentiate your approach between the roles of character designer, storyboard artist and illustrator?
Ritaban Das: At the end of the day it’s all interconnected; it all comes down to ‘story’. When I design a character, I start by thinking about what kind of personality the character has and their role in the story. I think about what I’m trying to communicate through the illustration. This helps me to figure out poses and expressions. As I’m drawing, I’m thinking about shapes, proportions and appeal. I also think about the composition of the illustration. When I make storyboards, I’m telling a story in motion by acting out the characters in them.

Q. What have been the greatest lessons you’ve learnt professionally and personally in your ten years of experience?
Ritaban Das: Draw what you like and the rest will fall into place. Only you know what motivates you.
Q. How did you find your calling to be an artist and, thereafter, how did you nurture your skills to hone your craft?
Ritaban Das: I’ve been drawing for as long as I remember and I’m always very passionate about it. To be very honest, I sucked at studies and my parents knew that very well. I remember spending most of my time with a box of chalk and slate gifted to me by my father. Like every other child, I also loved to sketch my favourite cartoons. I usually sketched these animated characters on the back pages of all my notebooks and also my classmates’ notebooks. It made me known amongst my seniors for my sketches.
That’s the only thing I was good at which I followed blindly. Honing my craft came from lots of practice. I draw almost every day. I also follow and study other artists’ work. Reading or watching their interviews, where they describe their work processes and the likes, helped me a lot to grow as an artist over the years. I try to open my eyes and ears to absorb everything.

Q. Could you take us through your process of how you envision a character and then execute it practically?
Ritaban Das: Being a Character Designer, most of my work is very much character-driven, blended with humour and very graphical too. I always try to convey some sort of story through every character or Illustration I make. I like to play with various shapes and silhouettes and usually keep things simple.
The character design process is, in a way, a combination of different things. I ask myself ‘Who am I drawing? What is his/her personality?’ I sometimes look at influential artists’ work to get some ideas or even start from a drawing I like and translate it into my style. Then, trying to forget those influences, I often start from scratch with a basic shape such as the face as it determines the rest of the character for me, then the body (this can be a circle, oval or even a pear shape – it all depends on the personality of the character I want to draw).

Q. Could you please elaborate on your current pursuit of higher studies and how you came to choose Canada for it?
Ritaban: I completed my studies at Humber College in 3D modelling & VFX and Graphic Design and got a job in an animation studio called House of Cool as a Story artist. I’m working on a very exciting project which will probably start airing next year.
I’ve always been well aware of the Canadian animation industry from the beginning and the kind of projects they do. I worked on a bunch of Canadian animation projects back in India.
We used to do a lot of outsourcing for studios here like Big Jump and Brown Bag Films. Canada’s animation industry always attracted me in terms of work culture, the kind of content they nurture, and the quality they produce, so I want to be a part of it.
“Whether you’re working on a commercial TV spot, web video or film, storyboards are an effective way to quickly tell a story. “

Q. What about the world of animation draws you towards it?
Ritaban: Animation is important because it enables us to tell stories and communicate emotions and ideas in a unique, easy-to-perceive way that both children and adults can understand. Animation has helped connect people throughout the world in a way that sometimes writing and live-action films cannot.
Today, anyone can pick up a drawing tablet and show their ideas to the world. Drawn figures can be funny, sad or serious. It can have a playful, less intimidating feel to it to make the viewer feel more comfortable. Often, it has simply served as a way to make a heart-warming story that makes you think.
Through live-action movies, people can form biases based on the appearance and real-life personality of an actor playing a character. But as an animated character, the character feels like their own being.

Q. What would you say are the most challenging aspects of working in the animation world and how do you tackle them?
Ritaban: Every project is challenging in different ways. The challenging ones are the projects where clients don’t have a clear understanding of their audience and outcome, goals or don’t have an investment or hierarchy for arriving at a consensus on feedback. The most challenging projects always boil down to size and scope and managing a team to produce the animation. Also, animating subject matter that I’m not interested in is challenging. But at the end of the day, we all survive because we all just love what we do.

Q. Could you take us through your process of creating a storyboard and highlight its most important aspects?
Ritaban: Whether you’re working on a commercial TV spot, web video, or film, storyboards are an effective way to quickly tell a story. A storyboard is a sequence of drawings that represent the shots planned for video production. It covers all of the major shots, angles and action of your film. The very first step is to read your script and visualise it as an audience would. As I go from scene to scene, I analyse the screenplay and decide how I want each scene to look.
A script breakdown tells you what storyboards you need to create. Then I start doing the rough thumbnails with all the necessary camera angles in Photoshop and chalk out the entire scene I’m planning to do. The important thing is to give anyone who looks at the storyboard a sense of space — where are the objects in relation to the space they’re standing in.
Once I finish locking the scene on thumbnail level, I pitch it to my art director or creative director and take their feedback. After passing the thumbnail phase, I start making the rough staging in Storyboard Pro and work on the required actions and move forward with the scene for the final animation. I might have to rework scenes over and over, combining different elements of the iterations until I finally have what the team is looking for.

Q. What ways do you apply to understand client needs better and thereby produce results that are in sync with them?
Ritaban Das : Whether I work in any studio or as a freelancer, I always listen to what clients need. Listening to your client will help you understand and retain the information you’re already receiving, even if it isn’t a formal meeting. You need to ask questions to identify needs and paraphrase what they say. It helps with clarification and to enhance your understanding of their needs.
Also, I bring new ideas to the table. I don’t hesitate to propose something other than what the client had in mind. You may have a better service in mind and, if nothing else, this again shows you’re listening and attempting to understand your client’s needs. Understanding client needs is one of the biggest challenges of any business but also one of the most important and rewarding tasks.

Q. Considering your range of work, could you please elaborate on significant projects and clients you’ve worked for?
Ritaban Das: Over the ten years of my career, I’ve worked on various national and international projects back in India for clients like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Pogo. I’ve been part of the projects like “Camp WWE”, “F is for Family,” “Kuu Kuu Harajuku,” “Evan the Epic,” “Penn Zero: Part-time Hero,” “DC Superhero Girls,” “Cloudy with a chance of meatballs” (series), “Rhythm Warriors” (series-in production) and other numerous animated TV shows.

Q. According to you, in what direction should animation be exploring and progressing now?
Ritaban Das: Animation is an incredibly versatile medium that is widely used in many different forms today. Animated films are big business nowadays. Companies such as Disney have had enormous success producing animated children’s films for many years. Animated characters such as The Simpsons and The Flintstones have long been familiar visitors to our television screens. The future of animation looks to be on an interesting journey as the quality of films is becoming higher and higher. Most people would now aim for a 4k film. Also, they’ve been experimenting and coming up with new techniques of animation.
One of the interesting ones is Mix Media, a technique that Disney has been experimenting with for a few years is mixing CGI and traditional 2D animation. The idea is to create an animated film using CGI and then to draw over each frame to give it a hand-drawn quality. The computer gaming industry is also pushing the boundaries of what is possible with animation, leading to the creation of some extremely realistic game footage. Computer game animation has certainly come a long way from the 2D graphics of early arcade games.
Now computer game animators can build environments and objects that react to the player’s actions. The animation looks set to continue delighting audiences for many years to come. With animated films continuing to rise in the blockbuster charts, capturing hearts and imaginations, there is no sign of this genre coming to an end.

3. Familiarising Myself with Documentary (part 2)
(Date 19/02/21)
Nichols, B., 2017. Introduction to Documentary. 3rd ed. Indiana University Press.
I Want to Make a Documentary: Where Do I Start? This is the tenth chapter in a revised edition of Nichols’ acclaimed book. I will note what insight I gained from it here, with personal comments in bold.
The Starting Point: Pre-production
- Screenplay not needed; world needs not to be created from scratch.
- Involves learning more about the existing world and how we can represent it in film.
- The idea stems from our relationship with the world around us. Something will ignite a passion that develops into a film.
- “It may begin as something about which we know little but want to know more, or something we’ve experienced for a long time and now feel we have a clear perspective on.”
I believe I have already somewhat tackled this initial stage – I have been ignited by a passion for a subject that I want to explore further. My relationship to the performing arts is an interesting one. I have always been adjacent to but not fully immersed in that particular world, for instance, a lot of my closest friends grew up as part of these amateur groups, and are now pursuing it at a higher level. I would always attend the shows, and listen to their backstage experiences. I did GSCE drama, and was always a dancer in the yearly school musical, but never pursued performance further than A level theatre. These combined experiences, a mixture of occasionally being onstage and being an observer, leaves me with a strange, complicated relationship to a craft I greatly admire. I have always felt like it was never in the cards for me to pursue acting as a profession, but I adore the construction of performance and the principles of what makes good theatre. I love to watch it, and analyse it, and I am obsessed with anyone passionate enough to enter the brutal industry of the performing arts. Back to Nichols.
What Is the Film About? What Is the Main Story or Focus?
- “Nonfiction stories can be about almost anything. They need not be about big, important topics to be big, important stories.”
- Short and to the point, or can invite longer, more thoughtful contemplation.
- Filmmaker needs to be driven by a passion to investigate the subject, that’s the key to what makes it compelling.
Why is the topic important? Why does it matter?
- Need to convince investors, financers, crew that the film is worth their attention.
- Proposal/ pitch vital.
- How will the project benefit those involved, send a message, make societal change, advance the art of filmmaking?
- “paint a picture of why it is important that the film be made and what the finished version will be like.”
- Persuasive language/ writing (why the filmmaker is a credible figure, offer convincing arguments of why the film should be made.)
- A clear understanding of the desired result can help the production process.
That last point is very important; It will be the best use of everyone’s time if we enter the shooting stage with a clear schedule, storyboards, interview questions etc. I will endeavor to make sure these are prepared and ready in plenty of time for peace of mind. I will of course develop these in the near future.
The pitch/ project proposal will be of great importance when I begin to communicate with potential participants. I want to make their involvement in the project appealing and worth their time and effort – to them I will be describing how I foresee the end result. I will be put to the test on how I come across professionally, but luckily, I can apply my existing people/conversation skills to this uncharted territory.
Some ideas I touched on in my first post that I believe will help convince the participants are:
- It will be a change for young talented people to show their passion and skill. A polished project like this will represent them positively, and will look good for any potential employers/ casting agents for jobs they want now or in the future.
- It will raise crucial topical questions about young people and their relationship to performing – how the industry is becoming increasingly unsupported by the government and yet the passion of the individual rages on. The company will hopefully want to be aligned with this sentiment, and convey an inspiring message to the audience.
Why should you be the one to tell this story?
“A coherent, compelling, well-written, or clearly spoken proposal by someone who knows his or her subject, knows what must still be learned or discovered, and conveys a passion for making the film is already well ahead of the game.”
- Demonstrate why you should be at the helm because you are passionate, and have done solid research.
What result do you want the film to have?
- No true answer – may be to provide a “captivating visual experience”, “chronicle a historical event”, address a societal issue etc.
- A clear idea of the film’s goal will help the proposal (which again, helps the production process.)
As I visualise it now, in this early stage, my film will rely on content that emerges from interviews, but the message will be reinforced and elevated by the visuals. For instance, one of the kids rehearses alone, in an empty studio, to highlight the disconnect between the now and the pre-pandemic, as the rehearsal was once a communal act among peers. I will definitely want to use some theatrical conventions (e.g stage lighting, costume) to reinforce the theme and play with performance. I will need to work out what elements will be pre-planned (e.g. organising with the talent if they need to prepare a performance) and what will emerge from the content of the interviews. Will it prompt any spontaneous new ideas? I should prepare for this, and allow room to manoeuvre around the shooting schedule.
What form will the film take?
- Narrative, poetic, or rhetorical?
- Will the film advocate for a solution/ approach to an issue?
- What mode works best has to be decided in relation to the specific project.
- Knowing what to avoid, what will work against your desired outcome, can also be valuable.
- Brief treatments must have an element of the cinematic – a beginning middle and end, and the language should create suspense and curiosity to discover more.
- Gather visual material (sketches, examples of other work) to help illustrate how the film will look and feel.
This final section inspires me to go ahead and start planning, creating storyboards and gathering existing examples that I can be inspired by. From there, once I have a CLEAR plan in mind, I can begin scouting for participants.
This will be the content over the next few posts. I will also be examining several acclaimed documentaries I have seen recently, looking at their strengths, and what aspects I can pull from them.
