49. Daydream by The Lovin Spoonful debuted Feb 66 and peaked at number two, scoring 973 points.
John Sebastian's song was inspired by touring with The Supremes, and their songs Where Did Our Love Go and Baby Love which had a "straight eighth feel." The song in turn, inspired The Beatles' Good Day Sunshine and Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks.

"your cosmic call sign" inspiration bible
it was very strange not writing yccs this week and knowing i wouldn't have a new chapter to post tonight, so i've finally organized the media influences and playlist i promised! under the cut are the many different movies / episodes / podcasts / music that inspired "your cosmic call sign." another huge thank you to everyone who came along on this intergalactic adventure with me!
MOVIES
The biggest influences on YCCS were Super 8 (alien vs. a pack of teenagers and their camera) and The Vast of Night + The Fog (small town vibes and radio broadcasts as a narrative device). While I recommend all the movies on this list, The Vast of Night and The Fog deserve more love! The Vast of Night is atmospheric sci-fi, reminiscent of 50s radio dramas, and The Fog is atmospheric horror. Both are 90 minutes and make for great Sunday night watches, especially once it's dark outside.
The Vast of Night (2019)
Arrival (2016)
Super 8 (2011)
Adventures in Babysitting (1987)
Explorers (1985)

The Fog (1980)

The Blob (1958 & 1988)
Invaders from Mars (1953)
It Came from Space (1953)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODES
Where Is Everybody? (S1E1)
Time Enough at Last (S1E8)

Peter during his In This Generation: My Life in The Monkees and So Much More tour; GRAMMY Museum, Los Angeles, June 17, 2013. Photos by Brian Cahn/ZUMA Press, Inc./Alamy Stock Photo, and Rebecca Sapp/WireImage via Getty Images.
From reviews of the tour:
“[Peter] picked up a guitar. He played. He was really good. He picked up a banjo. Played. Really well. He sat at the keyboards. Not bad.
He played the blues, imitated Elvis and did enough of the Monkees repertoire to placate those who desperately needed to sing ‘Daydream Believer’ with him. He told compelling stories, too, all of them rolled into the autobiography that he clearly wanted to convey: Yes, Peter Tork can play, and he can own the stage, alone. He talked about growing up in a house filled with classical music; about moving to Greenwich Village in its folk heyday: about heading to LA, where a friend named Stephen Stills helped him land a job on a TV show about a band called the Monkees. He recalled his frustration that the members of the band were originally denied the chance to play on their records. ‘We don’t want what you have to offer,’ a produced told him when he complained. ‘You’re not the Lovin’ Spoonful.’ On Sunday, he was witty, agile, energetic and sufficiently self-deprecating to balance his caustic streak. He won a standing ovation, fueled by more than nostalgia.” - review by Mary Schmich, Chicago Tribune, June 12, 2013
“In real life, Tork is a soft-spoken, sarcastic troubadour-typ; his solo acoustic set was soaked in his deep affection for old folk songs and the blues. If you were looking for a taut run-through of Monkees hits, you would’ve been disappointed. This was a multimedia storytelling event as much as it was a concert. As Tork told us stories of listening to Burl Ives with his parents, struggling as a wet-behind-the-ears Greenwich Village folkie, and following his friend Stephen Stills’ suggestion that he attend a casting call for the show that would become The Monkees, corresponding photographs appeared on the screen above him. It was a gold mine for any serious Monkees fan, if perhaps a little slow for somebody who wanted to show up and sing along. Admittedly, the best moments usually involved Tork getting down to business. A snippet of the lovely folk song ‘The Fox’ made me wish he had done the whole thing. Bluesy renditions of pop hits ‘Last Train to Clarksville’ and ‘She Hangs Out’ exposed their soulful bones. And a banjo-and-vocal cover of Jackie Wilson’s ‘(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher’ was ragged, tender and true. […] [His set] proved that he’s talented, period. Switching between acoustic guitar, banjo and keyboards, the goateed and bespectacled artists (who looks pretty much nothing like the Tork of Monkees days these days) oozed Americana, putting just the right kind of mustard on every chord progression and bluesy lick. His voice was more workmanlike than his playing, but it was invested with an earnestness that felt right. And it didn’t hurt that he was pretty funny. In the middle of ‘Higher and Higher,’ Tork tried to get the crowd to clap along. A bunch of folks started clapping on one and three. ‘You don’t know what clapping is, do you?’ he quipped. There, in that moment, we got a solid idea of who Peter Tork is. He’s got the friendliness and humor of a Monkee, and the world-weariness of a septuagenarian in a small Buffalo club, who just wants a proper backbeat already. You don’t normally get this level of insight from a live show, so for people still in the throes of Monkeemania, this was a very special night indeed.” - review by Joe Sweeney, The Buffalo News, May 5, 2013
Someone on YouTube uploaded clips from one of the performances (in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, on May 24, 2013); here's everything in a playlist..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my friend and keyboardist Steve Adams, Roy Buchanan, Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Danielle Dax, Ani DiFranco, Jermaine Dupri, Charles M. Gehr, Don Grolnick, Buddy Holly’s 1957 single “That’ll be the Day,” Julio Iglesias, Cush Jumbo, Tim Keller, Tom Lester (“Eb”), John Lomax, the discovery of Neptune (1846), OMC, Paul Petersen, Walter Pidgeon, Mary Kay Place, Aubrey “ Po” Powell (Hipgnosis), Mickey Rooney (good to have met you), Tim Rose, Romy Schneider, the 1994 film SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, the late Rolf Smedvig (good to have met you), Neil Smith (Alice Cooper), Bruce Springsteen, Jeremy Steig, Soulima Stravinsky, and Steve Boone of The Lovin’ Spoonful. Starting in 1964, The Lovin’ Spoonful rose out of the Greenwich Village folk/jug band scene. Their sound diversified into chamber pop (“She’s Still a Mystery”), country rock (“Nashville Cats”), and the chart-topping hard-edged psychedelic “Summer in the City”—songs penned by their main songwriter, John Sebastian (who later embarked on a long and notable solo career). Beginning in July 1965 with their debut single “Do You Believe in Magic,” the band had 7 consecutive singles reach the Top 10, including “Daydream,” “Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?” and “Rain on the Roof.” By the mid-60s, The Spoonful was among the most popular groups in the world, and their music and image influenced many rock acts of their era—it is believed that John Sebastian’s wearing of “granny glasses” inspired John Lennon to follow suit. The band migrated from NYC to the Laurel Canyon (Los Angeles) music scene, intersecting with Crosby Stills & Nash, Love, The Mamas & Papas, The Monkees, Frank Zappa, etc. After 1967, The Spoonful went through various line-ups (including a short reformation in the 1979 Paul Simon film ONE TRICK PONY). The current iteration features Steve and long-time members Joe Butler and Mike Arturi. We crossed paths on road gigs a few times—check out this recent clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isTJ3VBL18Q  Meanwhile, HB SB and thank you for your years of giving us lovin’ spoonfuls of great and joyful music (photo of the band at a brick wall by Henry Diltz).

Watch "NEW * Daydream - The Lovin' Spoonful {Stereo} 1966" on YouTube
youtube
So the morning of my 8th birthday, I was eating my breakfast and listening to the radio. I suddenly realized that the DJ was talking about me and how much I loved this song. My mom had called the radio station asked them to dedicate this song to me as a birthday surprise. I was over the moon...I can still remember exactly how excited I was. Trust: I still love this fucking song. Good morning y'all! 😂
"What a day for a daydream / What a day for a daydreamin' boy / And I'm lost in a daydream / Dreamin' 'bout my bundle of joy
And even if time ain't really on my side / It's one of those days for takin' a walk outside / I'm blowin' the day to take a walk in the sun / And fall on my face on somebody's new-mowed lawn
I've been havin' a sweet dream / I been dreamin' since I woke up today / It's starrin' me and my sweet thing / 'Cause she's the one makes me feel this way
And even if time is passin' me by a lot / I couldn't care less about the dues you say I got / Tomorrow I'll pay the dues for droppin' my load / A pie in the face for bein' a sleepy bull toad
And you can be sure that if you're feelin' right / A daydream will last long into the night / Tomorrow at breakfast you may prick up your ears / Or you may be daydreamin' for a thousand years
What a day for a daydream / Custom-made for a daydreamin' boy / And I'm lost in a daydream / Dreamin' 'bout my bundle of joy"

Today’s compilation:
Sixteen Solid Gold Hits 1986 Pop / R&B / Pop-Rock / Country-Pop / Soul / Doo Wop / Rock & Roll
Well, this comp from the mid-80s that gathered both big and small hits from the 50s through 70s was a bit of a mixed bag. Frankly, I think it was a really bold choice to lead off with the shittiest and most embarrassing re-recording of Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" imaginable, but the album definitely got better from there, with original versions of Gladys Knight & The Pips' "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me," The Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream," and B.J. Thomas' "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" coming to save the day 😅.
Now, despite this release having the title of Sixteen Solid Gold Hits, a substantial chunk of these songs actually seem to have fallen into relative obscurity. And that's something that definitely piqued my interest going into this listening sesh, but unfortunately, none of these less remembered tunes seem to be worth highlighting here 😔.
And although there doesn't seem to be much of a theme to this album, besides gathering some songs that made it onto the Billboard charts over a three-decade span, there is definitely an unexpected current of country-pop songs on here. And that's a huge personal blind spot of mine that I'm hoping to change at some point, but these offerings here just sound like disposable, string-infused, commercial Nashville schlock ☹. Oh well.
Still a decent listen. Would be substantially better without some of these re-recordings, though. Never understood the purpose of those when 99% of the time they're inferior to the original versions. Sure, they're probably cheaper to license, but your listener's gonna feel hoodwinked when they actually go to listen to your album and find cheap imitations on there instead of the original Billboard hits that they were expecting; especially when you neglect to mention it on your packaging, like this one does. Tipper Gore should've made that her music crusade instead of complaining about things like Twisted Sister lyrics. I think we'd all have been better off for it.
Highlights:
Gladys Knight & the Pips - "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" The Lovin' Spoonful - "Daydream" B.J. Thomas - “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”
