So, I found out today that my department will no longer exist as of January 1st 2025, and that is all anyone will tell us! Joy!

Anyway, have a bit of fic I managed to bang out in the Michael's parking lot. This is fairly late in the fic, after Vic's family life sort of. Ceased to exist. This is Vic's first year alone for the holidays and Egon can tell it's weighing on her a lot, possibly based on things she's said but also just her overall attitude and body language, I haven't gotten that far yet.

She looked surprised at his invitation to spend the day with him essentially at work, but the expression was fleeting, quickly replaced with the subtly tired, distant look she'd had since the beginning of November.

"You really sure you want to spend the day with me?" She asked.

"Yes."

"You know I'm not exactly good company right now."

Her reply was tinged with a self-disparaging bitterness that made him wish he could punch her father again, and aim to break one or more bones in the man's face this time. In lieu of an assault charge and the legal sundries that usually accompanied such a thing, Egon settled for continuing the present conversation.

"Good or not, you still deserve company. If that's what you want." He quickly tacked on.

Victoria rolled her eyes and scoffed.

"Yeah? In what universe?"

"Mine."

Shit.

He hadn't intended his response to sound that...romantic. His irritation at the source of Victoria's depressive state coupled with his desire to make her feel better had prompted him to reply without the thought he usually gave to his words; to quote a colloquialisim he heard now and then, his heart had gotten in the way of his head.

And now he was left cursing his momentary lapse in self-control and, when Victoria's head snapped up in surprise, scrambling for a way to ensure that his impromptu romantic overture was anything but. She had a place with everyone at the firehouse, not just him, and she quite literally lived with Janine.

That could work...

"And Ray," he continued, after a pause that came too close to being awkward for comfort. "And Peter, and Winston, and Janine, both physically and socially. Ray wasn't being hyperbolic when he said we're your family now; we aren't genetically related, but we don't have to be in order to have empathy and support you as needed."

Victoria opened her mouth, but before she could say anything - likely in protest - he held up his hand to stop her.

"And in my professional opinion, you need support right now."

Jason “my family doesn’t know im alive” Todd and Danny “my family doesn’t know I’m dead” Fenton going alongside each of their plans my beloved. like Danny will absolutely go head-to-head with all of Gotham to support his new best friend on all his crime lord endeavors while he drags Jason to also attend collage with him. They are roommates and there never seems to a mention of family from either side. It’s an unspoken understanding they have. They met because Crime alley as a ghost lair thrummed with so much loneliness, it was at first the perfect place for Danny to hide his ecto signature in. But then he saw the dumbass whose lair it was lean his motorcycle just a tad too much when making a sharp turn to an alley, he sweeped the floor through a lifted chain link that passed his body but not his helmet. Yep that’s right the red thing got stuck. Danny who at the moment happened to be watching through his window snorted. Much to his horror because if not a ghost that dude could’ve gotten his head flung off.

Still, the scene was ridiculous.

On a whim he irrationally sees the police closing in on the guy and panicked at the thought of the guy using intangibility to free himself so Danny phased them both through his apartment wall and left the guy sprawled in his couch. Jason didn’t freak out but that’s normal when one’s got a concussion, one the guy immediately denied having as Danny laid out the medical supplies. The idiot proceeded to almost flatten four steps to the door with his stubbornness. He also said “I’m asexual” in the most deadpan voice as Danny dropped him back in the couch.

Danny sighed. Clearly though, he’d done so too early in the night because the guy kept trying to go, kept trying to knock Danny out, kept trying to slash him with knifes Danny didn’t know he had stashed. He’d only disarmed the guy from his guns. The visible ones apparently, cause at one point the guy did take out a gun and shoot until the ammo ran out and then teetered the thing like it was an art prop and hit his moon lamp.

Danny "yeah you aren’t officially my friend until you’ve tried to kill me" fenton my guys.

Anyways both keep having the same argument over if Danny technically kidnapped Jason or not. Danny holds the fact that the police at least didn’t see the guy make the ridicule. Jason argued that happened cause he was sporting a concussion. Danny argued he got that after.

Jason at first thinks the guy's a meta, but no. Danny introduces himself, sheepily now that he recognizes this is who the lair he invaded is from. He bandages him and tries to cook for him. If Danny didn’t have ice powers he most certainly would’ve burned the apartment. Jason then proceeds to kick him out of his own kitchen and make them both enchiladas. It’s the most normal both had in a while with another person and the air seems oddly settled. From then on, Jason constantly invited himself over, under the pretense that this was his territory and therefore he could drop in unannounced. Danny who has actual powers says he only allows this because Jason cooks very well.

Danny stays away from the crime fighting business unless his buddy is in deep shit he can’t get himself out. Also it’s Danny’s turn to cover for his vigilante friend which Sam and Tucker give him so much shit for. (but also advice)

And they were roommates. (omg) Danny effectively derails Jason’s big comeback plans by casually dropping ghost lore every two days. Like,

Jason, talking about how he doesn’t want Bats snooping on his territory:

Danny: Just don’t let them in

Jason: ??

Danny: yeah!! Hasn’t Batman died and got revived??? You can totally kick out death touched people you don’t want entering on your lair.

Jason: …I can?

Danny: Yep dude, your lair’s supposed to feel safe.

Jason: wait does that mean I can kick you out?

Danny: First this is my apartment. Second, im dead, not dead touched. Third, it’s too late to get rid of me. bitch.

Anyways Jason is super excited. You mean to tell him he can actually deny people over to his territory haunt?? (Yes it’s only to people who have died and came back but still!! The sample size is exactly the type of people he doesn’t want to see—!)

Joker my beloathed can’t step foot in Crime Alley.

(Jason’d feel a lot safer if the clown was dead but the possibility of his murderer turning into a ghost and their little loophole not applying on the clown is too scary to contemplate.)

Anyways, Jason loves experimenting with the power. It can go from simply making people shudder and not want to enter crime Alley to straight up not letting them enter like there’s an invisible wall blocking the way.

Jason because he’s hurt that Bruce never even patrols Crime Alley and also because he’s petty put B under the category of “invisible wall” blacklist. His reasoning is that the man doesn’t even attempt to enter Crime Alley. To him it’s surely just a place shadowed in tragedy. (anyways that’s it’s the place he met Jason)

Ironically, Jason totally forgets that Batman does venture into Crime Alley one day in the whole year. The day he met Jason.

Okay. He didn’t forget at first. The first year Jason remembers cause it was only a few months till then but then the next— Jason forgets that today’s the anniversary of the day’s Bruce’s parents died. He forgets to allow B in when he feels a slight tug and dismiss the feeling that prompts Bruce to investigate because he literally can’t enter Crime Alley. He starts the trialsTM, he scouts on the very edge and sees people the whole day enter and get out and cross with no problem but Bruce can’t.

It’s literally just Bruce.

Time to call Constantine, i guess.

regarding your response to the ask about how common/uncommon black female cats are (and the older explanation post linked)—it's so interesting to see how the ratios change based on the amount of red cats vs black cats in the population. That answers a lot of confusion I've had with the subject lately, as I had been doing (albeit amateurish) punnett squares to try and figure out what the likelihood for red females was and was just getting so confused as to where people were getting the 5:1 statistic from, since in my own chart it was showing 1/3 being female. But your explanation makes much more sense.

Is what you initially entered, 0.2 orange to 0.8 black, what is seen as an accurate estimation as far as total orange vs black cat prevalence, or is it just entirely varied? I tried doing some googling to find studies about orange vs black distribution and had no luck.

It's a commonly cited number, but even after multiple tries, i haven't been able to find any source for it. Honestly i think it's probably made up, but it works as a example and gives nice round numbers to demonstrate the phenomenon.

But it doesn't really matter because for almost all real predictions or calculations the local/breed-specific allele frequencies are more relevant, and those are too varied and constantly fluctuating to make a reliable guess anyway.

they're both close to their moms and their families in general, yet they both are very independent spirits and want to go out of their families' shadows, they're both morally grey and work to keep the streets of gotham safe, they're both emotionally stunted and full of grief they don't ever fully let go of, and they're both the first of something storyline wise, since they both make the huntress name and suit for themselves, they both have been born into a rich and religious family, but they overcame their privilege and works to help gotham by the dint of their vigilantism and determination and humanity, they both like cats

but also; helena wayne hasn't faced shit for being morally grey like helena bertinelli has, helena wayne was not fully satisfied with her lawyering job in golden age and has not been said to have a dayjob afterwards, helena bertinelli is committed to her teaching job and it is a part of her cause to help gotham vet better and protect its vulnerable and innocent. helena wayne is shown to be good at being in teams and has worked on intergalactic missions, helena bertinelli has stayed in birds of prey the longest and outside of that she's mostly been a solo fighter here and there

another reason they could work is that helena wayne is a bat but not batfam hardcore, she appears more levelheaded than helena bertinelli but she's not a goody two shoes or her father's loyal soldier, and i think helena wayne is a very fair person, she'd respect helena bertinelli and not try to change her morals or whatever, because they're both much closer to each other in terms of their morals and crime fighting philosophies

metacontextually, they're so... soulmates coded if you think about it. helena bertinelli wouldn't exist without golden age helena wayne, and new 52 helena wayne was able to exist in the main earth because of helena bertinelli. their names are forever tied together for worse and for better because when you have one, you have the other, like two sides of the same coin

and finally, their emotional side... helena bertinelli is rooted to her past and can't ever move on, she's frozen in time. meanwhile, helena wayne is always on the go, never still, always changing names, always changing locations, always changing lives, because she can't afford to be stable, she doesn't have a place she can call home

but home can be that one person for you. and when both of them can always find each other no matter what missions or self-isolation periods they vanish off to, they'll always have their home

Now that I'm thinking about that video criticizing C3, I think a much more valid criticism of Campaign 3 is how disconnected the characters are from political institutions. Orym is the only one with any such connections going into the story, and his are a very specific and limited situation. Chetney is intelligent, but he's also been a loner and isn't from Marquet. This is in fact a very political story - international cooperation from many disparate nations to address a global threat, a violent cult deliberately fomenting unrest, one key figure in that cult ruthlessly using the resources of the Dwendalian Empire (and earlier, Molaesmyr) to pursue these goals, another key figure a former war hero - and yet no one in the party knows shit. I am bringing up Campaign 2 not so much to bemoan that this is not a repeat campaign - I don't in fact want that - so much as that it's a very good illustrative example, but that was also an extremely political story and it was one that succeeded because there were characters like Caleb and Beau who were both knowledgeable about and deeply invested in the outcome, and tied to the institutions involved. The same can frankly be said about Vox Machina. I think if this campaign had leaned into those political aspects instead of having a group that's largely apolitical and to be honest ignorant even of very recent history they lived through, that would have helped both with the sense of party agency and with the sense of stakes and consequences. Political stakes in actual play are incredibly popular - again, see both the previous two campaigns as well as Dimension 20 and Worlds Beyond Number (and, for all its faults, RQG) - and it feels like Bells Hells is often avoiding them.
