early thoughts on The Ssum: Forbidden Lab

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for; The Ssum is finally out, 4 years after the release of the beta and multiple release delays. So what’s all the fuss about?

... I’m not really sure! But I will do my best to lay it out for you - below the cut!

The Good Things

Teo

He seems like a sweet guy. I appreciate that he doesn’t seem as instantly enamored as some otome love interests can be. I’m excited to learn more about him.

I’m doing the Day 2 lunch chat as I am writing this review, and I would like to reiterate that he is genuinely very sweet. I enjoy the way he writes, it feels very distinct. He reminds me a bit of Ray and Yoosung in terms of the way he talks about things.

The interface

The new UI and interface is super neat. Personally a big fan of how you can change themes, although I don’t really have anything to choose from yet.

Labs

I personally find the labs to be a lot of fun, but I also understand that a lot of people aren’t fan of them. To me, it’s a good way to connect with the community to some degree without having to join discord servers or generally be active online.

If you see a Josephine (u6A0zZ) talking about Saeran in one of the Mystic Messenger labs, then that is probably me. Feel free to shoot me a message and say hi! I would love to chat (both on the app and here on Tumblr).

The Okay Things

Energy incubation

This is just a silly thing to me. Maybe it’s because I don’t understand it. There seems to be a trick to it, but I don’t get it. Anyway, I don’t actively dislike it, I’m just not a fan of grinding based mechanics.

Teo’s slow typing speed

Maybe I’m just a fast texter, who plays Mystic Messenger on the highest speed, but god Teo types like 1 word a minute. The game isn’t meant to be played like MM though, so I can overlook it as I can just put down my phone and walk away.

Tutorials

There are many tutorials, and not all of them do a sufficient job at explaining what the features actually do. It can be a bit frustrating having to guess why I have to do certain things other than just because it’s fun

At least they are short.

Again, a feature I don’t understand the point of. Why am I raising alien tamagochis?

The Bad Things

Subscription price

It is very expensive, and from what I can gather from people who have paid the subscription, it does not give me more of what I personally wanted from it - more chats and calls with Teo.

To me, it would make more sense if it was a one-time purchase like the calling cards in Mystic Messenger. The steep monthly price seems like a cash grab.

Locked/paid features

This includes paid (battery) answer, private account, changing your schedule, etc.

I’m a big believer in free to play games, and I understand that Cheritz is a company that needs to make money. But dang. There are so many things you need to pay for access to.

Overall, it’s a very mixed experience that is very different from what I expected. I knew it would be different from Mystic Messenger, as Cheritz is allowed to make new and different games, but I think overall I expected more chats and less... Other features. It is fair that they have less chats, as there is only one character to talk to, although they hint at there eventually being more characters (or versions of Teo?) in the future.

But I think overall I am excited for what’s in store for this game - to see where the journey takes us... To the space station, maybe? lol

I've made posts before about autism headcanons for the characters and paired them with Spotify playlists I've made for them. I've made playlists for both Soi and Shinbi, but I don't really have many headcanons for them.

I hope that when I make these playlists, people might be listening to them..... Hm.

Idk if I'd make any playlists for the other characters tho. Doubt I could make any for Zion or Hobin, n I guess I could make one for Yujin, but I imagine there'd be a very limited amount of songs I could choose for him

I hope people enjoy my fics too!!! :0 I'm especially proud of my wip Secret Ending Three.. I should write more of it today!! That, or I just cave and try making a playlist for Yujin. Idk!

It would've been nice to do something for Cheritz's anniversary in February - I was planning on getting a Nameless (the character) tattoo, but was depressed at the time, and cuz of how much energy getting a tattoo takes out of you anyway, I decided to leave it. I may instead get that tattoo on my birthday, in September then.

Nameless my favourite thing ever - I hope I can get some official merch one day - I'll probably get it for Christmas :3 after that, I might want to start saving for Crobi Dolls. That'll take me years, but it'll be a life long hobby, so it doesn't matter

Maybe you might like to make Nameless content too!! :3 I encourage it, all the help is appreciated ^^ on the Discord, I regularly (ish!!!!!) stream the game n I always love when ppl watch the stream, even if they don't say anything. I try to do it on Fridays, but it's mostly just whenever I feel like it - after I finish Nameless, I'm gonna stream Dandelion too!!

Hell, maybe I should just do it on Twitch or something if I wanna make it a proper regular thing?? No idea. I just like Nameless and Cheritz a lot

I'd really love if I could meet other Cheritz fans (who Aren't just fans of MM or Ssum) irl.... Ik that someone in the Nameless fandom actually had their own stall at a London con, so ik that a Nameless fan out there is actually in the UK!!! But London, at a con.... Idk if I'd go there to see em
