Movies Watched, Jan.2023

Happy New Year! The world hasn’t ended yet, even though it keeps feeling like everything could just crumble at any moment. Maybe that’s just how it feels all the time, though. Glad that I started the first month pretty strongly with movies. Obviously the holidays helped, but it feels like there are a lot of good films this year too.

You People (2023)

Great cringey ride. Seymour Dreyfus taps her horrifying self, and the leads are sweet.

The Fablemans (2023)

Very melodramatic tone. I enjoyed the Cinematography, felt and looked different than most contemporary movies. Dano and Williams had such good performances.

Love on Delivery (1994)

A classic Stephen Chow joint. Absurd, increasing stakes and become more surreal as the film goes on. A cute reminder that we haven’t really seen movies with similar comedic sensibilities in a while.

M3GAN (2023)

Quick, funny and the rightful heir to the insane murder doll genre. Smarter than the last Chucky remake. Scary and absurd. M3GAN’s dialogue is sharp. Also a secret queer story 🥲

Turn Every Page - The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb (2023)

Learned a lot and was very pleasant and funny. Everyone had daddy issues.

Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 (1974)

Funny and campy, the race jokes feel like it didn’t pay off. Very dated and uncomfortable. Glad I’ve finally seen this version.

The Glass Onion (2022)

Great romp with a throwback to classical structure. Not feeling the ending, though.

The Menu (2022)

Great acting but the second half is kind of a let down. The premise was exciting but I think it got in its on way. It was less than what I desired, but probably more than I deserve.

I know that I am a few hours early, but I really wanted to get this out there since I may not have the chance to do so tomorrow. In remembrance of the late, great Robert Archibald Shaw, whose magnetic personality, mesmerizing screen presence, and dynamic energy entertained us for so many years on the silver screen. One can only imagine what would have been, and how he would have continued to thrill us, and what movies would have been better for his participation, if he wasn't taken from us way too soon. You are still sorely missed, 46 years after your passing, Mr. Shaw!

Here's something that very few are aware of.....  Carol for Another Christmas is a 1964 ABC American TV movie, written by Rod Serling as a modernization of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. Robert Shaw portrays a very vociferous Ghost of Christmas Yet-To-Come, and gives an amazing monologue with Sterling Hayden that, is riveting, and almost on par as his famous USS Indianapolis monologue from JAWS. If you have not yet seen this minor classic, TCM usually has it available for streaming year round.

1313 – Day 2

TOWNSEND FARM

Once more, there is a sudden chill in the air that hinders the Townsends’ farming. They still find plenty to occupy them, not least due to Benjamin’s efforts of learning to read and write. It is slow going – he finds it hard to make sense of the fact that the tiny characters form words he knows – but he does his best, and whatever he knows, he imparts to his brothers. They don’t have much to do, anyway, and he still hopes that this skill will aid them in their future, should they have opportunity to do something other than farming.

Malika keeps them company most of the time. She has Benjamin give her some lessons as well, but most of the time, she is just quietly doing her sewing or knitting, caring for the twins or doing work around the house. It is still strange to her, having several siblings around. Back in their own cottage, there had only been herself and her parents for the longest time, and then, after several miscarriages her mother had suffered, her baby brother Abraham. But she enjoys it.

CRAWLEY HOUSEHOLD

Over the years of her marriage, Anna has become good friends with her husband’s sister. Caroline can be a little imperious – quite like her mother, in fact – but for the most part, she is softer than Mary, and far more amiable.

Except when she is losing at chess. Which is exactly what she is doing right now.

“When have you gotten so good at this game?”, she huffs.

“Over many matches lost to your brother”, Anna jokes, and takes another of Caroline’s pieces off the board. “Blame him.”

“Oh, I do, believe me. I shall tell him exactly what I think when he comes home.”

“Pray, don’t be too hard on him. I may still have need of him later on.”

“If you say so. Whatever for, I couldn’t say. George doesn’t seem much use to anyone these days”, Caroline grumbles, probably mostly because George isn’t home much these days. He has followed his father into studies of the law and is often on business with him.

Anna decides to change the subject. “How are you getting on with your paramour?” She has been courted by a merchant’s son by the name of Tobias Sterling lately. To be precise, Tobias has merely been adopted by a merchant – a child of the widow Sterling Sr. he had married – but as he is likely to inherit his adopted father’s business, Mary and Matthew still consider him a suitable match for their daughter.

“Well, I think. Although I’d be happier if Mother didn’t keep reminding me that I might have become a sister to the Earl. As if it’s my fault that his brother has a wandering eye.”

“You know how ambitious your mother is. I’m sure once you’re married, she will adjust.”

“If you think that, you don’t know my mother. Well, the small mercy is that she won’t hound me about children too much, I hope. Not while you and my dear brother are so avid to provide them.” She looks meaningfully at Anna’s stomach. She is pregnant once more. Fertility, at least, is something she hasn’t struggled with.

All that is lacking is for one of her children to be a boy. As happy as the Crawleys have been about Annette’s birth, they still lack an heir to carry on the family name. It is only your third child, she tries to console herself. Watcher willing, there will be many more.

After her chess match is over, Anna steals herself into her bedroom, where her little darling is still in her crib. Looking at her baby girl still makes her happier than anything else in the world, and she thanks and prays to The Watcher every day for her continued good health. She had been so afraid that Annette would suffer the same fate as Matilda, but her little one grows every day, hale and healthy.

She can only pray that her third child will be strong as well.

Finally, after years of marriage, Lady Elinor Pelham has given birth to her and her husband’s first child - Richard, the heir the family has been craving for so long. There has been much rejoicing in the Baron’s household as a result.

Am I enjoying dressing Anna up a bit too much for the fact that her family isn’t even gentry? Maybe. But I can’t help myself, she’s such a pretty sim. And it would make sense for Mary to want her family to be well-dressed. Disclaimer at this point: I know there were several new sumptuary laws put in place in England later in this century, but I’m not going to reflect those. 1) Because my cc is limited enough as it is and 2) this challenge is historically inauthentic anyway, I'd rather have fun with it than agonize over every detail.

Bill Cobbs as Rev Charlie Jackson in Get Low (2019) with Robert Duvall and Lucas Black. Bill was born in Cleveland and has 201 acting credits from The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (1974 as a man on the subway platform) to an episode of a 2023 mini-series. His entries among my best 1001 are The Brother from Another Planet, The Cotton Club, Sunshine State, and A Mighty Wind (as a blues musician). His other honorable mention is The Hudsucker Proxy.

His other notable credits include an episode of Good Times, A Hero Ain't Nothin But a Sandwich, Trading Places, Silkwood, The Color of Money, Suspect, Bird, New Jack City, The Bodyguard, 13 episodes of I'll Fly Away, Demolition Man. The NYC Subway has set an accessibility goal of ensuring that no station is more than two stops away from the nearest accessible station. Seems like a noble goal, but how much of an investment does that actually involve? Let’s take a look at the current gaps in the network.

The 1 train has an eleven-stop gap (Dyckman St to 96 St) and a nine-stop gap (Penn Station to Chambers St). 3 new accessible stations would be needed.

The 3 train has seven non-accessible stations beyond Utica Av; 1 new accessible station would be needed in addition to the planned upgrades at Junius St.

The 4 train has four non-accessible stations beyond Fordham Rd, but this gap will be filled by planned upgrades at Mosholu Pkwy.

The 6 train has an eleven-stop gap (Pelham Bay Park to Hunts Point Av) and a seven-stop gap (Hunts Point Av to 125 St); 2 new accessible stations would be needed.

The 7 train has a six-stop gap (Court Sq to Woodside); 1 new accessible station would be needed. (Upgrading Queensboro Plaza would also fill a gap on the N and W trains.)

The A train has a seven-stop gap (Euclid Av to Lefferts Blvd) that will be filled by planned upgrades at Rockaway Blvd.

The C train has an eight-stop gap (125 St to 59 St) and a seven-stop gap (Utica Av to Euclid Av); 2 new accessible stations would be needed.

The D train has a seven-stop gap (Kingsbridge Rd to Yankee Stadium) and a six-stop gap (Atlantic Av to 62 St); 2 new accessible stations would be needed. (Upgrading 36 St would also fill a gap on the R train.)

The F Train has a twelve-stop gap (Church Av to Coney Island); 1 new accessible station would be needed in addition to the planned upgrades at Kings Hwy.

The G train has an eighteen-stop gap between Jay St MetroTech and Church Av; 3 new accessible stations would be needed. (One of these would also fill a gap on the F train.)

The J train and Z train have a record-holding nineteen-station gap between Flushing Av and Sutphin Blvd. 3 new accessible stations would be needed.

The L train has an eight-station gap (Bedford Av to Myrtle—Wyckoff Avs); 1 new accessible station would be needed.

The M train and R train have two six-station gaps (on either side of Roosevelt Av); 2 new accessible stations would be needed, including the planned upgrades at Woodhaven Blvd.

The N train has a seven-station gap (New Utrecht Av to Coney Island) and an eight-station gap (Astoria Blvd to 57 St); 2 new accessible stations would be needed. (Upgrading Queensboro Plaza would also fill a gap on the 7 train.)

The Q train has a six-station gap (Prospect Park to Avenue H) and a seven-station gap (Kings Hwy to Coney Island) that will be filled respectively by planned upgrades at Church Av and Sheepshead Bay.

The R train has an eight-station gap (Atlantic Av to 59 St); 1 new accessible station would be needed. (Upgrading 36 St would also fill a gap on the D train.)

In total?

The stated goal could be met with 22 new accessible stations beyond what’s already planned. That’d bring the total number of accessible stations on the system from 143 (30% of the system) to 165 (35% of the system).

And that’s not particularly impressive. Ultimately, “no station will be more than two stops away from an accessible station” might sound like a lot but honestly isn’t all that much of an improvement on the status quo. The MTA needs to be held to a higher standard for accessibility.

Usually the bigger episode have 9-1-1 behind the title like, Brawl in cell block 9-1-1 and The taking of dispatch 9-1-1. Is there any particular reason for this?

I think it's just when they can do these types of titles, they do.

Like Ocean's 9-1-1, Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1, The Taking of Dispatch 9-1-1 are all movie references with the numbers replaced with 9-1-1. (The Ocean's movies [ex. Ocean's 11], Brawl in Cell Block 99, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3).

Then "9-1-1, What's Your Grievance?" and "9-1-1, What's Your Fantasy?" Are just plays on "9-1-1, what's your emergency?"

Tragedy in Life and Conscious is Existential Experience, not Aesthetic.

This movie is on all the time as if someone's missing something. And I think we are. It's Pelham 1 2 3 it's the taking of and it's a section of the subway that has it's the engine and it means something interesting and the pelham's it's an old family from that area it's a area of town in New York City and they had been attacked and that particular clan and it was the Max and they were murdered all of them and they're gone and they did find out who it was it was the clones and apparently they want to go after our son's money so we know what it means.

: it means to take her son's money from places where they lost first and that is a basic is what the 123 means and it means one two three and they're out. It's an engine they want to use which means that their loss that's what they use and it's the clones and so they mean that it is any of the warlock as motivation where they succeeded and you can see it and there are certain areas where there taking the money first or having it taken one of them is Boston Massachusetts and it's a big heist and they have famous people doing it we're not necessarily Max another one is Los Angeles and a Wells Fargo headquarters and they did that because there are five plans that were wiped out. The sun is right though they're grabbing his money but that is the kickoff for a different leg if they're playing. Tony soprano knows it right away it's like they died there and it's like one two three better being better boom and he understands like we did when it is saying that's where they almost lost or they took a loss they want to start to win and the saints with our son too but really they're doing it with Tony soprano he's one of the major criminals and if you look in Boston the one that they're ripping off as the mayor is someone who is like Tony soprano in Los Angeles it's the same deal. To get away with the money and the stocks they are stopped on the Brooklyn bridge. There's strong symbolism there Brooklyn is a notoriously morlock area and what it means is that they're getting stocks they're getting stopped by these warlocks on their way to taking over the new lands and they mean the rest of the world. That is something we were saying and he gets shot in the heart they're bringing him in there trying to question him and he gets broken out and they start to understand these people make it very hard to do stuff hasn't happened yet but we catch some putting it out there all the time and they're saying it constantly

It's not necessarily where we are or the demons but this is with their theory and they're going with it they're also making a major motif to take the money in areas where they have lost or losing but the main reason is motivation for the whole program in other words they're not doing well but they will recover doing acts of war that are subterfuge successfully in those areas and taking the money is one of them and they mean all of it I have to take control of it. 1319 – Day 2

Winter is finally, finally at an end. The Townsends couldn’t be more overjoyed, especially when the ground thaws and presents itself as firm enough to be planted again. They’ll see if the weather holds, but for now, they decide to put at least some of their efforts into working the fields again.

They don’t stake their future on just that, however, and double their efforts on their other trades. Benedict is fortunate enough to attract a rather well-paying commission, which goes a long way towards them being able to pay their taxes, but they have bigger plans, too: they still intend to buy new farm animals, once the prices have gone down a bit.

As agreed upon with the Watmore brothers, they take Elsie and Wilfred over to Mahlsberg to live with their uncles in the future. It’s a tearful goodbye, and Elsie feels quite put out at being sent away, but she makes up for it by coming to visit as often as she can, a lot of the time just sitting with Malika in the cottage while she works on something.

To make good use of the improved weather and take the twins’ mind off of missing their cousins, Benjamin decides to revive his old passion for fishing, with his children in tow. It gives him some time alone with the two of them, which is also rather pleasant.

They may only be six now, but he knows best himself how quickly time passes. Looked at from another angle, he can honestly say that he can’t believe that they are six already. It feels like yesterday that he first held them in his arms, yet so much has happened since then.
