A satisfying sort of chaos

Advice to Aspiring Comic Book Creators by Gene Luen Yang

I turned forty last year.

When I was a kid, forty seemed like a lifetime away. I didn’t think about forty all that much, but when I did I imagined I’d have life figured out. By the time I got that old, I’d have cracked the code.

My actual fortieth year has been a blur of ink and airplane trips and diapers. Most days feel chaotic, but it’s a satisfying sort of chaos. And while I definitely haven’t cracked the code, I have learned a few things along the way.

That’s why, when I get asked for advice by aspiring cartoonists, I feel that I have something to offer. The following is for those of you considering a career in comic books. I hope you find it helpful.

1. Decide what’s more important to you: expressing yourself or earning a living through art.

Money and self-expression aren’t mutually exclusive in the long run, but in the short term they usually are. Books are a difficult way to make money. Independent, creator-owned comic books? Near impossible, especially when you’re just starting off.

If your primary objective is to make money through art, I’d suggest switching to a related field: animation, graphic design, web design. You’ll most likely be using your talents executing other people’s visions, but these sorts of jobs can still offer enough creative elbow room to be satisfying.

Don’t get me wrong—becoming a successful animator or graphic designer can be just as difficult as becoming a successful cartoonist, but at least you’ll have a chance at working for a company that offers health insurance.

But if what you really want is to get a deeply personal vision out of your head and onto paper, get a day job. Get a day job you like, one that leaves you with enough time and energy to work on your dream project on the side. As I’ve expressed in a previous post, I’m a big fan of day jobs. I’ve taught at the high school or college level for my entire cartooning career. My day job isn’t just a source of income, it’s also a source of inspiration for my books. Interacting with a variety of people on a daily basis naturally leads to stories.

2. Explore different ways of making comics.

When I began drawing comics, I drew on Bristol board, using a brush and a bottle of ink. Why? Because that’s how Stan Lee and John Buscema told me to do it in their book How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way. After meeting other cartoonists, however, I realized that The Marvel Way isn’t the only way. If you talk to ten cartoonists, you will probably find that they use ten different sets of tools. Heck, if you talk to one cartoonist at ten different points in her career, you will probably find that she’s gone through ten different sets of tools. There is no one right way to make comics, and art tools are personal. Experiment, read books besides How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way, get pointers from friends. Especially that last one. Nothing educates you on cartooning like having cartoonist friends. Which brings me to my next point:

3. Find a community of like-minded people.

I was lucky enough to fall in with a shockingly talented group of cartoonists when we were all in our twenties: Derek Kirk Kim, Lark Pien, Jason Shiga, Jesse Hamm, Thien Pham, Ben Catmull, Jason Thompson, and a bunch of others. We used to hang out once a week. We would draw together, critique each other’s writing, talk shop. I never went to art school, so my friends were my comics education. I learned about storytelling from them. I tabled with them at conventions. I even got publishing deals through them. Derek Kirk Kim introduced me to my current editor.

Making comics can be a lonely affair because you spend most of your days cooped up in your studio, alone at your drawing table. But the truth is, success often occurs within the context of a community. You have to find that community, grow it, and nurture it.

4. Go write. Go draw. Right now.

Have a groundbreaking idea for a graphic novel? That’s great, but I’ve got to be honest: Ideas are cheap. Everybody has at least one groundbreaking idea for a story. Most people have several.

But most people don’t have the determination to do something about it. If you actually sit down and write your story, if you draw it out in panels, you put yourself several steps ahead. Set goals for yourself. Give yourself a few weeks or a few months to mull over an idea, to do sketches of it in your sketchbook, to talk to friends about it. But once those week or months are over, you’ve got to move on to the actual writing and drawing, no matter how scared you may feel. You have to force yourself to do it.

A great idea that’s still stuck in your head might seem big and important, but in reality it’s a small and feeble thing. A successfully executed great idea, on the other hand? One that’s made the journey out of your head and onto something tangible? That’s powerful enough to change the world.

So go do it. Punch your excuses in the face.

Robotics and AI Can Enhance Human Capabilities

Striving for perfection is a universal characteristic found in human nature. Although we’re far from perfect, technological innovations have improved our lives in so many ways, and thanks to medical advances, we live longer than our ancestors. Not only did technology extend our life expectancy, but it also changed how we communicate, work, and learn. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, as technology can benefit humanity in so many ways. As innovations continue to blur the lines between humans and machines, we can’t help but wonder what it would be like to have our bodies and minds enhanced with technology. Will it make us closer to becoming superhumans?

Researchers have made great technological leaps over the past couple of years, especially when it comes to robotic solutions. It’s no longer strange to see a human working alongside a robot. Since robots have proved effective in assisting humans, scientists are taking a step further and developing robots that will enhance our current capabilities and eventually become a part of us. Moreover, robots could help solve complex medical issues and completely revolutionize the healthcare industry.

This low-cost robotic arm could change the lives of the disabled

One such innovation was developed by an engineering student from the Pham Van Dong University in Vietnam. The 23-year-old Ngo Van Det created a robotic arm designed for people with disabilities. The arm took eight months to develop, and it’s made from resin, which is significantly cheaper than other materials used for prosthetics. In fact, similar products on the market can cost thousands of dollars, while Det’s innovation costs around $130. This robotic solution is ideal for Vietnamese veterans and accident victims who are disabled and usually can’t afford to buy expensive prosthetics. This innovation is also equipped with pressure sensors connected to the user’s biceps. Once the biceps move, the movement triggers the sensors to send a signal to the rest of the robotic arm. And thanks to its robotic fingers, users can easily grasp items with varying degrees of pressure. During testing, Det’s solution did extremely well. Le Quang Trong, a disabled person who tried the robotic arm, says it’s much better than the traditional prosthetic arm he used previously.

Treating an inborn condition with an implantable robot

A group of researchers from Boston Children’s Hospital also made a significant contribution to the world of robotics. The team developed an implantable robot designed to treat children suffering from esophageal atresia, a condition in which a baby is born with a disconnected esophagus. If not treated correctly and on time, it can lead to death. The traditional procedure requires surgeons to install long sutures on both ends of the esophagus. These sutures should gently stretch the esophagus, until its ends are long enough to get stitched together. However, after the sutures are installed, the child needs to be kept on sedatives to make sure the sutures stay in place. The process, which can take several weeks, is costly, because the child requires intensive care. Plus, such a long use of sedatives can lead to further complications.

All this encouraged the researchers to come up with a better alternative. They developed an implantable robot made from waterproof silicone rubber. The robot consists of two metal rings that attach to the esophagus. As these rings spread apart, they elongate the tissue and extend the esophagus. The robot is connected to a WiFi controller placed on the child’s back, thanks to which doctors can apply “adjustable traction forces to the rings, slowly and steadily pulling the tissue in the desired direction”. This innovation has already been tested on pigs, where it managed to stretch the animals’ esophagus without disrupting their health.

AI as a memory booster

Besides implantable robots, scientists are also experimenting with advanced neural implants to improve our memory. Embedded with artificial intelligence (AI), such technology could boost our brain performance and potentially make us smarter. At least that’s what researchers from the University of Pennsylvania believe. Their project, published in the journal Nature Communications, reveals that AI could make our brains work faster and more efficiently.

The researchers conducted an experiment involving 25 respondents suffering from epilepsy. Each patient had between 100 and 200 electrodes installed in their brain. The team first monitored the patients’ neural activity while they were given memory tasks. All the data was then collected and used to create an AI-based algorithm capable of predicting whether the patient’s brain will remember the information presented. Once the algorithm shows that the patient is unlikely to remember specific information, it triggers “precisely timed pulses of electric charge to the brain”, which boost “the brain’s capability to act”. As a result, patients who were given AI stimulation had 15 per cent better results than those who didn’t. The team involved in the project hopes their discovery will lead to bigger developments in AI research and help scientists to create powerful systems to enhance the brain’s capabilities even further.

While some believe machines will take over the world, making humans useless, the reality presents a different picture. Technologies such as AI and robotics won’t destroy us. Instead, these innovations have great potential to augment our capabilities and make our lives better. And if you thought existing developments are impressive, wait to see what the future holds.

Finding Phong finds a paying audience in Vietnam

Will people pay to watch documentaries in Vietnam? A film about a transgender person has raised hopes they will.

The audience cheered and clapped as the screen faded to black at a cinema in Hanoi.

The applause was not for a sold-out Hollywood blockbuster, a Vietnamese action movie or a tear-jerking romance.

This time, the audience was cheering for Finding Phong, the first independent Vietnamese documentary to be commercially distributed in the country’s hubs Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

It is no exaggeration to say that this marks a milestone in the history of independent documentary making in Vietnam, where such filmmakers have struggled to find support as well an audience that typically thinks documentaries are stuff you watch on TV for a few minutes before switching channels.

Finding Phong premiered on October 2 in HCMC.

More than 200 people showed up to meet Phong, a transgender person who underwent male-to-female surgery in Thailand to achieve her dream of becoming a woman.

Very few of them are likely to have known that it took four years for Finding Phong to be screened in Vietnam’s cinemas, although it was very much a movie made in the country.

“We brought the film to major cinemas in the country, but they refused to screen it. They said it would not attract an audience,” said Tran Phuong Thao, who co-directed the film with her French husband Swann Dubus.

Thao was referring to 2015. The film had been finished in 2014 and she was looking for a way to have it reach the masses.

“The cinemas weren’t wrong. They needed to get something back for screening a movie. Who’s going to cover all the cinema costs if no one pays for tickets?” Thao told VnExpress International.

Thao’s struggle is not new for Vietnamese independent filmmakers. The latest edition of this story is one that goes back to 2004.

History and prejudice

2004 is considered a landmark year for independent documentary making in Vietnam because the first “Varan” filmmaking course in the country was launched then.

Varan is a documentary style originating in France that focuses on capturing the nature of events and people without filmmakers’ direct interference.

The courses opened a new chapter in Vietnam’s documentary history, which had been dominated until then by government-funded propaganda films.

But the first Vietnamese independent documentary filmmakers soon found out that their movies, despite being made with a lot of passion, could not attract an audience.

Vietnamese audiences have a prejudice against documentaries and are reluctant to see them, said Bui Thac Chuyen, the first Vietnamese filmmaker to win an award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival Cinéfondation, a foundation dedicated to support young creators worldwide.

“They think of documentaries as old war films funded by the government for propaganda. They don’t think it’s worth their time,” Chuyen told VnExpress International.

Therefore, documentaries are typically screened only in cultural centers in Hanoi and HCMC for a small audience. Even annual documentary festivals are attended by a limited number of viewers, no match for entertaining Hollywood movies that dominate cinemas.

The small audience image also meant that cinemas and production companies invest more in screening Hollywood films, ignoring documentary projects that also require financial support, Chuyen said.

Nguyen Tran Khanh, a representative of Blue Production, the partner company in releasing Finding Phong, explained the viewing habits of most Vietnamese when he said: “They assume that documentaries are meant to be watched on television, and they only know documentary films via awards, not commercial distribution.”

Tran Thanh Hien, an independent director and former instructor at documentary center Hanoi DocLab, said most independent documentary filmmakers have to seek funding outside the country.

“Filmmakers usually have to find financial support from international film festivals in Asia or Europe. There is very limited support from Vietnam,” said Hien.

Although the government-funded Studio for Documentary & Scientific Film offers funding, it is only for members of this organization who usually make government-ordered documentaries, he said.

“The lack of finance forces filmmakers to take up side projects to make a living, creating more challenges in the already difficult filmmaking process,” Hien added.

Good premise

Before Finding Phong, another documentary had garnered public attention by being screened at a cinema.

In 2014, Madam Phung’s Last Journey, a film about a drag queens performance group directed by Nguyen Thi Tham marked the first time that a documentary was screened in a cinema in Vietnam.

The film was distributed independently by Blue Production, and screened in culture and film centers, said Khanh.

Finding Phong has taken another, bigger step in getting documentaries to the general public.

“It is a milestone when the distributor can negotiate with the cinemas,” said co-director Thao.

The film has come out when the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in Vietnam is finding its voice, another breakthrough in a country where sex and gender orientations are still taboo topics not openly discussed.

The year the film was completed, 2014, was also when the first VietPride event was organized. This annual event now gathers thousands of people marching for the rights of the often ostracized community.

While Finding Phong was being screened at international film festivals in 2015, Vietnam’s main legislative body, the National Assembly, approved a law that allows transgender people to change their legal gender identity.

In the revised Marriage and Family Law that took effect on January 1, 2015, the article prohibiting “same sex marriage” was removed.

Even Vietnamese film authorities have supported Finding Phong by giving it the P rating, suitable for all ages, although the film has “sensitive” scenes showing pictures of human sexual organs.

‘Quality, not category’

But there are other aspects of Finding Phong that have kept the audience interested.

The film, released on October 12, 2018, has been assigned screening slots in cinema throughout October.

“Finding Phong is a very good film. It blurs the border between a documentary and a feature film and shows that the value of a work of art lies in its quality, not category,” said Pham Thu Hang, an independent documentary filmmaker.

To a transgender person, coming out and convincing family members of his or her desire to change sex is an extremely difficult task, given the social norms and prejudices in the country.

In Finding Phong, however, Phong’s optimistic and lively personality generates a positive vibe. The characters’ natural dialogues and Phong’s excitement when discovering the feminine changes in her body add to the optimistic feel.

Thao and her husband Dubus have also included Phong’s own video journals, which capture her most personal thoughts, expressed in imaginary conversations with her mother, the person who was most difficult for Phong to persuade.

“Transgender is a good topic, but the way the filmmakers crafted the film was even better. It touches the audience’s emotions. It touches my emotion,” said Hang.

The film made its international debut at the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (BAFICI) in 2015. In the following two years, it won six international prizes, including the Grand Prix at the 2015 Jean Rouch International Film Festival and Official Selection at the 2015 San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.

Hang, whose debut feature has recently been premiered at the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival in South Korea, is confident that Vietnamese audience will learn to appreciate good documentaries because of Finding Phong.

“Most of them just haven’t seen a good film yet,” she said.

Chuyen was also optimistic about the future of independent documentaries in Vietnam. “When people pay to see a documentary, the filmmakers will be more motivated to pursue their path.”

“Finally, people have started to notice Vietnamese documentaries,” he added.

Hien said he believes that the film will be a good first step for documentaries to reach the general audience.

Cinemas will also see that there are good values of showing a documentary. “They might screen more films in that category for this reason, even though they won’t make much profit from those films,” he said.

“Finding Phong will set a good premise. Viewers will see that they can learn more from a documentary than a regular Hollywood movie.”
