antiope!mary and yelle!shannon send post
MMM!!
em i love this. antiope!mary, with her quiver of exploding arrows, absolutely begging shannon to have a single emotionally intelligent non-self sacrificial bone in her body. literally grabbing her by the shoulders trying to get her to have a reaction to serious things that isn’t closed-off stoicism (bc shannon isn’t superficially yelle, she’s not an outwardly groovy stoner funguy, but it's a different expression of the same thing, of throwing herself so hard into a Cause, and into the protection of her friends, to the point where she has accepted she has no worth beyond it). mary!antiope pleading please care about your own life, your own life, your own life—the world is better with you in it, the best thing that you can do for the world isn't die.
(please. i love you. i don't want you to fucking die.)

In my reread, something that I've noticed is the romance dawn trio's dynamic in a way that I never really did before. They all serve a leadership role on ship that the other characters don't. Now, I think that the Strawhats don't have any kind of typical hierarchy or anything, and seem to defer to each other based on the situation. But I do think that in terms of leadership, Zoro and Nami stand out. Undoubtedly Luffy has final say in decision making about what the crew will be doing, where they'll be going, and who their allies are, and he's the one that the crew place their loyalty and trust towards. And Zoro is the one who seems to place the responsibility and safety of the crew on himself, and when Luffy isn't around, he tends to step up. Nami... um, well, Nami actually does all the duties that ship captains normally do (sorry Luffy). Let me explain; if you've ever been on a boat before then you know that the captain/skipper isn't just the leader, but is actually a specific role on the ship that comes with certain duties. Now my sailing experience is primarily in the form of dinghy sailing, racing and yachts (a very little), so a bit of a different situation but I feel my point still stands. The way that Nami commands the ship, calling out instructions for tacking and setting the sails is the captain's job. How she manages their finances, cargo and resources, and organizes and delegates the tasks for the maintenance and upkeep of the ship is the captain's job. For a story about being a pirate on a ship, they don't actually spend all that much time on the ship, but I think that pre-timeskip especially makes it very clear that for day-to-day life, while they're actually sailing, Nami is in charge. For Nami especially, I think going from being subjugated for so long by Arlong, with very little autonomy, to taking on a leadership role on the strawhat crew without even really being asked is such a wonderful trajectory for her story to take. And I just think that this trio's dynamic is kind of neat, how Luffy clearly places so much trust in both Zoro and Nami. He relies on them so much, for guidance and to do the parts of leadership that he's just not so good at. They're the two most likely to challenge him and tell him what to do, and he usually listens to them. There's just something really unique about the relationship that he has to both of them and how they function within the crew that I'm really enjoying in a way I just didn't before now

Guidance
There sure are a lot of ways to give guidance to a troubled young man. Two different ways to model it...
...Sekingar's calm demonstration of how to rise above provocation contrasts jarringly with Bang smacking Garou by way of discipline.
I hope that Bang finds another way to guide Garou other than hitting him when he acts up. Otherwise, I worry about what will happen when he decides he won't stand for it any longer.
Edited because I have too many thoughts to leave in the comments:
I think we start to understand why Garou chose the path that he did a little better. Bang means well but his way of thinking has always been 'I'm stronger than you, therefore you must listen to me.' That's how his elder brother handled him. That's how he's run the dojo, where the strongest disciple rules, and that's why he smacks Garou every time the latter acts up. Garou's learned well. He has a problem with the way heroes are modeled in the world, therefore he has to beat them down to show that he has a point.
The intergenerational violence looks inevitable.
The difference in the way Sekingar, who couldn't scratch Metal Bat if he tried, nevertheless influences him for the better is a testament to there being another way to do things.
ONE is still cooking. Let's hope someone can talk sense into Bang before Garou hits him back.

If fighter pilots lived in a world of split seconds, bomber boys lived in one of agonizing hours, with too much time to think about their own end, which depended inordinately on Lady Fortune. In its testing and training programs the Air Force looked for different qualities in fighter and bomber pilots: physical strength, judgment, emotional stamina, dependability, team play, discipline, and leadership in bomber pilots; rapid hand-eye co-ordination, aggressiveness, boldness, individuality, and a zest for battle in fighter pilots. In a profile of the ideal bomber pilot, the Air Force noted:
"The attitude of crew members... was that they would gladly let some other crew have the hottest pilot in the group... if they could have the man who, when in a tough spot, where a decision which might mean life or death to them had to be made, would quickly... make the best possible decision." For bomber pilots, "intellectual traits" were more highly prized than sensory-motor skills. "Love of blood sports, cockiness... and lack of high intellectual stature would prove to be good qualifying factors for fighter pilots," said this Air Force study.

violentine literally has everything. tension to friends to lovers. i wall myself off from people to keep myself safe but theres something about you. we understand each other. going against your group to stand up for this person and what you believe is right. "i saw that you were in danger and i just acted without thinking". battle team. co leaders. "ive lost so many people and i cant lose you too i wont". struggling single parent finding someone who supports her And her kid. not-so-ex-girlfriend one of the main villains. go to war together. captured together. escape together but lost in the chaos and later reuniting. twice. fighting ex together. twice. making it back (mostly) safe and sound and building a real home worth fighting for together
BUT theyre in a choice game so you can also have: betrayal. manipulated by not-so-ex-girlfriend in a moment of severe weakness into agreeing with the wrong side. fighting against each other (and later apologizing). severe injury? DEATH?? no matter what a sacrifice is Made???

not to be political but I've seen a lot of people saying that those who call Israel an apartheid don't know what they're talking about and um. As someone who has studied South African apartheid as well as grown up in a Jewish community. This claim has more merit than you think

something about the tragedy of things left unsaid, of unresolved anger and frustration, of the weight of their current world and responsibilities turning them against each other. something about how the ones you love the most are most capable of hurting you, and you're capable of hurting them in return. and there is so much love here. so much they'll never get to say, so much love left unexpressed.

what kind of catharsis do you need ?
tears .
You've been holding it all in for so long, haven't you? It seems like there's no time, no space to fall apart. But you don't have to pretend to not be hurting. The tide of pain in you is cresting. Let it out. There's no judgement here.
freedom .
You've had the weight of the world on your shoulders, haven't you. It's okay to put the burden down, stretch your legs -- everything won't fall apart if you just take a second to breathe. Go for a late night drive with the windows down and the radio up. Howl at the moon. Break something. You earned it.
