GOOD VIBES CHALLENGE: THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS (1995)
Tumblr media
@thealmightyemprex @the-blue-fairie @themousefromfantasyland @goodanswerfoxmonster @softlytowardthesun @angelixgutz @princesssarisa @amalthea9
In this adaptation of the famous Kenneth Grahame novel for children, we are presented to the live action framing device of a grandmother, played by Dame Vanessa Redgrave, taking a both ride trough the river with her grandchildren, so they can enjoy a picnic in the banks, and to entertain the children the grandmother reads to them the story of a group of animal friends who might live in the woods, and this way we are introduced to the animation that tells the main story of the adventures of the curious and innocent Mole, his companion, the wise Rat, the stern yet generous Badger, the wholesome family of Otis and his little cub, and the rich, arrogant and extremely inconsequential Toad, who is constantly in pursuit of trilling new vehicles no matter how expensive they are or how dangerous his handling of them can be to those who are in the surroundings.
While the mamal characters present us to a more calm and poetic slice of life story, with focus on how Mole and Rat can long for adventure new knowledges of the wide world while learning with each other to value the beauty that they already have in their every day lifes, Toad's misadventures present a more agitated, cartoony style of slapstick comedy.
The movie perfectly works as family entertainment because it explores well the more energetic comedy of Toad's side plot that can be more atractive to younger viewers, while older viewers will find something more atractive in the calming and sooting daily lifes of Mole and Rat.
This has become my second favorite animated film based on The Wind in the Willows (the first favorite being the Rankin Bass animated film).

Thank you @pink-octopede64 for bringing to our collective attention that this game exists. (Post: here)
If anyone else is interested in trying to get this game up and running, the archive link is here. Surprising to no one, however, it looks like trying to get a game that’s nearly 30yo playing has its hurdles, but I thought I’d at least share the guide that comes with it.

Pocahontas (1995): 3 times Pocahontas is compared to her mother + 1 time she's recognized on her own merits.
rambling lil meta under the cut
see, what's crazy about this whole situation is that it makes me wonder what exactly pocahontas's mom was like to have left such a massive impression on literally everyone in their community? there's that outright statement that "yeah, your mom's spirit is in the wind, basically, and our people venerate her as a spiritual guide (at the very least)." we know that she's the main connection between pocahontas and grandmother willow, and there's an implication in there that whatever leadership role she held in the village is expected to fall on pocahontas's shoulders someday.
i am so convinced that this role is some kind of spiritual leader/shaman position. wise-woman, priestess, whatever it's called. we don't see anyone else besides kekata performing any kind of spiritual rites, and even he isn't seen acting in direct contact with spiritual entities. kekata has to perform chants, provide offerings, and use a medium. pocahontas can just fuckign. talk to the things. how is she doing that? why isn't anyone else really able to do that? john smith could talk with grandmother willow but would he be able to if pocahontas wasn't there (i actually think he could but that's a different post)? has she ever done that for literally anybody else? nakoma never mentions grandmother willow. nobody mentions grandmother willow. apparently, the only two people who knew about her before pocahontas brought her new bf over was pocahontas and her mom.
i'm losing track of myself here, but the point is pocahontas is Highly aware of the ghost she's expected to live up to. and it sucks. and there's a lot more to her character arc about this but the eventual come-around to accepting that she has a responsibility to be more than herself and more than her mother's ghost is so heartbreaking because it also meant she had to let go of her soulmate at the same time so i c ry

10 Classic Films to Give You Cozy, Vintage Winter Vibes
While there are plenty of films that take place during winter or feature a winter section, for this list, I specifically aimed for films that had that cozy, comforting vibe to them.
*I expanded a bit, so this time around, you'll find films here that are pre-1995, again, for those who were looking for something more on the vintage/retro side. Also, I tried my best to find some that weren't strictly Christmas-related, though there are a few of them on the list.
----------
The Bishop’s Wife (1947, Comedy/Drama/Fantasy)

Cricket on the Hearth (1967, Animation)

Christmas in Connecticut (1945, Comedy/Romance)

last song: i do not know the technical answer to this question there have been a lot of songs in the last 24 hours (i went to a spongebob rave and then a club) so theres really a good mix of spongebob banger remixes, dua lipa, cupcakke, nicki minaj...
currently watching: the pride and prejudice 1995 series (i am almost finished, i had only seen the 2005 movie)
currently reading: the sun and the star, bringing back a lot of nostalgia; and listening to the wind in the willows, also bringing back a lot of nostalgia
current obsession: the very hyper niche terror au's i've been cooking up with @lollians (one of them involving one of my long-time dnd ocs which nobody saw coming and now im insane)

Touch Me
by Stanley Kunitz
Summer is late, my heart.
Words plucked out of the air
some forty years ago
when I was wild with love
and torn almost in two
scatter like leaves this night
of whistling wind and rain.
It is my heart that's late,
it is my song that's flown.
Outdoors all afternoon
under a gunmetal sky
staking my garden down,
I kneeled to the crickets trilling
underfoot as if about
to burst from their crusty shells;
and like a child again
marveled to hear so clear
and brave a music pour
from such a small machine.
What makes the engine go?
Desire, desire, desire.
The longing for the dance
stirs in the buried life.
One season only,
and it's done.
So let the battered old willow
thrash against the windowpanes
and the house timbers creak.
Darling, do you remember
the man you married? Touch me,
remind me who I am.
from Passing Through: The Later Poems, New and Selected by Stanley Kunitz
(W. W. Norton, 1995)

The Good Vibes Challenge
As I told @thealmightyemprex, it's taken me so long to recommend films because I've kept overthinking what qualifies as "good vibes" for me compared to others. Like, Return to Oz is one of my comfort movies, but it's also the film that opens with Dorothy taken to an asylum. Likewise, Fanny and Alexander is my ULTIMATE comfort movie, but it's a five-hour magical-realist-style/historical/fantasy epic dealing with the subjects of child abuse, abusive marriages, etc. (It DOES have a happy ending, however.)
But here are my choices.
Rusalochka (1976) directed by Vladimir Bychkov
Tumblr media
2. The Magician - I know this was already recommended, but it's good! And it does have elements of a romp, among other things! I love the characters - and I love the odd family vibe between them all. I think it's sweet.
Tumblr media
3. Matilda the Musical - on Netflix - I just saw this last night, but aaaaaaaah, it gave me all the feelings! BEAUTIFUL.
Tumblr media
4. The animated 1995 version of Wind in the Willows, narrated by Vanessa Redgrave and starring Rik Mayall as Toad. The animation is SO GORGEOUS, i remain in awe. it's like a balmy spring day.

Here’s something interesting: there is a PC game based on the 1995 adaptation of The Wind in the Willows! Information about this is scarce because outside from some Ebay listings and different box art, it’s pretty obscure and there is no gameplay footage online. But someone did uploaded the game on Archive.org and you can find it here: https://archive.org/details/WindInTheWillowsInteractiveAdventure/
