A Close Call

Bigby Wolf x female reader

Summary: After the attack from Bloody Mary, Bigby decided it was best to try and get some form of rest to heal. [Name] ensured he did so.

The room was thick with the smell of medicine, blood and alcohol. As well as those bloody Huff’N’Puffs, but that was the least of [Name]’s concerns at the moment. When she got the call from Snow about what happened to Bigby, she all but sprinted to Bigby’s apartment, white hot concern coursing through her veins with a burning tightness in her nerves. Sitting beside Colin on the floor, [Name] tried her best to keep herself calm as Dr Swineheart carefully removed each little fragment of the bullets that riddled Bigby’s body. His hands stained with blood, but it was nothing compared to the blood on Bigby’s body and chair. 

She knew him being a Fabel meant he could take injuries that were fatal to humans but the fact he had stopped breathing a few times during the operation had her fighting back tears and keeping herself from falling apart right there in the room. When she first got there, and saw Bigby like that, she had some colourful words for Snow as to what happened and why she allowed it to happen. 

“Don’t worry, [Name]. Bigby’s a tough bastard, he’s been through worse.” Colin said, plopping beside her as they watched Dr Swineheart work. Snow had taken to hovering around them then sitting down for a few minutes, and then repeating it all again. Chocking back a shaky breath, [Name] tried to steel herself, tried to make herself believe Colin’s words. A soft groan was heard, making everyone perk up to see Bigby lifting his head, looking around in a daze before turning his head to spit out blood. 

“Bigby.” [Name] couldn’t stop herself from moving over quickly and resting her hand on his cheek. A wave of relief hit her hard to see him awake, alive. His eyes focused on her and he smiled weakly. 

“Hey, love.” He coughed a little, little flecks of blood on his lips but [Name] didn’t care as she pressed a soft, loving kiss on his lips. 

“Excuse me, Miss [Surname], but I’m still working.” [Name] looked at Dr Swineheart before apologising and stepping aside to give him more room to work with, though she hovered close to Bigby. “He’s lucky to be alive. If he takes one more silver round close to his heart, the only place we’ll be meeting again is the morgue.” A cold shard of ice pierced her heart at that, and her mind working hard not to picture Bigby in that situation. 

“It’s been... a confusing set of days. Even for us.” Snow commented, but [Name] couldn’t be bothered to listen to her. Her attention focused only on Bigby as she gently held his hand, he responded by giving her a weak squeeze with what strength he could muster. His arm bandaged up after being reset and Dr Swineheart finished up once removing the final piece of bullet, bandaging the rest of the injuries up. 

“Miss [Surname], please ensure that the Sheriff gets some rest. His body will eventually give out if this continues. There are limits to what even I can do.” She nodded at that, standing up for a moment to see him out, thanking him profusely for his work. Snow had followed not long after, agreeing to let Bigby get some rest for the night. The second they left, [Name] locked the door and removed the phone from its base, preventing any phone calls from reaching them. 

Another soft groan was made as Bigby forced himself to his feet and shuffled into the kitchen to get himself a drink. His body stiff and aching with every little movement. Just as he shut the fridge, he felt a warmth press against his back and two arms come around his front, her touch gentle in worry that she might hurt him further. 

“I’m alright, [Name]. I’m not made of glass.” He smiled, taking a sip of alcohol and humming softly against the warmth. Her touch seemed to chase away any pain before, but these wounds weren’t so merciful. Still, he enjoyed the touch regardless. 

“You scared me.” He just caught her voice by how low it was, the fear and worry that stitched into her words, the concern. “You.... we almost lost you.” Her hold tightened ever so slightly and he could feel her body shaking lightly. 

“Hey, hey, hey.” Bigby shifted around, setting the bottle aside and took her into his arms, ignoring the sharp shooting pains. “I’m not leaving you that easily, [Name]. I promise.” That was the last thing Bigby wanted. He didn’t want to see her distraught like this, he wanted to be there for her. In the Hellhole that was his life, [Name] was the one ray of light that kept him from drowning in it. 

She nodded, resting her head against his chest. "Thank you, Bigby." They remained like that for a moment, the world around them no longer of any concern, all that mattered was each other. In each other's arms, feeling the warmth of their bodies, even all the little textures of their skin. The slightly rough bandages that covered most of Bigby's chest and shoulder, as well as the bits of chest hair, but it didn't bother her at all. She could hear the faint rhythm of his heart beating beneath his chest, a sound that gave her such relief and comfort, a soothing sound.

"Hey, you know I'm still here, right?" The tender moment was shattered by Colin's announcement. An annoyed sigh slipped Bigby's lips but he looked over at the pig.

"Colin. Do you mind?"

"Not really but I'd like a drink, and you're both in front of the fridge. And I don't have hands." [Name] chuckled softly, pulling away from Bigby before turning and getting Colin a drink, setting it down for him as he thanked her. Bigby took the moment to watch them. Watch her, mainly.

Where would he be without her? The one that brought such light to his life, such warmth and a sense of belonging. If it meant protecting her, he would take any bullet for her. But [Name] didn't want that, he knew, she wanted him to live.

Maybe being a bit more careful wouldn't be a bad idea.

Willingham was raised in a staunchly conservative family, had Israel described to him in a certain way for his whole life, and was writing a series which specifically aligned itself with displaced Jewish populations. It also stems from a pretty identifiable place: Fabletown itself is, in large part, an analogue for the Jewish diaspora. Given that American media has portrayed Israel exactly like that for a very long time, I think it's a pretty easy oversimplification to make if you're not particularly politically conscious. Willingham thinks of Israel as a scrappy underdog going up against the big guns with survival on the line and coming out on top. The Israel bit is Willingham doing what a lot of Americans have done over the years: Being ignorant about Palestine, while assuming Israel's geopolitical situation to be "tiny nation for an oppressed people heroically holds the line against a region that wants it dead". They're not good, but I also don't find them hard to gloss over, given that they make up a few pages at most of a 150-issue series.Īnd the Israel thing in particular I think gets misconstrued. Abortion, for instance, is less a topic that the comic addresses, and more something that gets a few scattered references to. He is pretty clearly a conservative, and there are undertones of that (which I, as a leftist, don't personally love), but I definitely don't think that they heavily inform the work. Every "Nu Trek" (2017- ) Series Ranked from Worst to Best:

Very Short Treks (2023): There's really no words for just how terrible this series is. I mean, I know that it only barely counts because it's explicitly not canon and has a total combined run time of about 15 minutes, but *my god* is it bad! Only one of its episodes is remotely funny, and even that manages to feel like it's driven its main joke into the ground by the end of its 2-minute runtime. The only thing that I can say for it is that is that it gives me an easy, uncontroversial choice for worst Star Trek series, not only of the last 7 years, but of all time.

Picard (2020-2023): Listen; I know that this series is unpopular with the Tumblr Trek fandom, but it actually breaks my heart to have to put it so low on the list. It has, in my own opinion, the best dramatic acting of any Trek series and among the best directing, and almost every individual scene, in isolation, is compellingly watchable. More than that, it has fascinating worldbuilding choices, you can really *see* the passion of the writers for what they're creating (at least in the first and third seasons), and Agnes in particular is among my favourite characters in anything ever. It's got a lot of great moments, too! Picard and Seven bonding over shared Borg trauma; Soji uncovering the truth of her identity; Jurati hacking the Borg Queen's brain; Picard's final farewell to Q; Shaw's Wolf 359 monologue; Geordi's reunion with Data...I could go on. And yet, it just feels like so much *less* than the sum of its parts! Incredible ideas are introduced and then just shrugged off to pursue much more boring ones. Story arcs feel pointless if not actively offensive. Absolutely baffling writing choices are made throughout, with no indication as to why. And the nostalgia baiting , particularly in the final season, becomes so intense that it just chokes the plot to death. One comes away haunted by the feeling that this series should be so much better than it is.

Discovery (2017-2024): Really, this is two separate series: a twisty, grimdark, sci-fi war drama and a gentle queer coffeeshop AU about scientists who talk about their feelings. Both of them have their moments, but they each fall down in the same way: a focus on epic, high-stakes mystery box storytelling that undermines one's ability to really get invested in the characters, or even know who they are when they aren't off saving the universe. Without that, while I liked many of the characters and loved seeing them science the shit out of things using teamwork and the power of math, it's kind of difficult to get invested in this series one way or another. In spite of its absolutely gorgeous visuals, it comes off feeling weirdly...flat.

Short Treks (2018-2020): Not a lot to talk about here; just kind of an anthology series of short films adjacent to Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. Mostly they're varying shades of mediocre, but a few of them are as brilliant as any episode of Star Trek ever made, so the series gets to be relatively high on the list.

Strange New Worlds (2022- ): This is the first entry on this list that, in my opinion, belongs on the top shelf with some of the best of the older series. And it achieves it basically by adopting the same formula as the original series or the next generation--socially conscious planet-of-the-week adventures with enough wit, cleverness and joie-de-vivre to keep it interesting. I remember in 2017, there was plenty of discussion of how it's possible to update Star Trek's formula for prestige television; how funny that the solution turned out to be "don't change it at all, just give it modern special effects and actual character arcs." That said, the series is a bit *too* beholden to the original, with focus primarily on a bunch of characters who aren't allowed to grow or change too much because we already know how they'll turn out. It would be even better if it were about a new ship and a new crew full of nobodies who we can come to love. Which brings us to...

Lower Decks (2020-2024): Above, I said that Picard felt like it should have been so much better than it was. Lower Decks, frankly, should have been so much worse. How is an adult animated sitcom with Rick and Morty style animation and constant memberberries this freaking good!?! Every episode is a master class in efficient storytelling, with 22 minute runtimes often feeling like they contain as much story and character work as episodes twice as long. And the characters are incredible--like TOS and TNG, they feel almost archetypal, and even though you've never seen them before, they slide so seamlessly into the Star Trek universe that it's hard to believe that they weren't just *always* there; that there was ever a time when you could imagine the Star Trek universe without just intrinsically knowing that Tendi and Shaxs and Mariner were off somewhere in the background. It's greatest success though, the reason why it's comedy works when it really shouldn't, is that it's only *slightly* sillier than the serious series. What we end up with a fantastic series with an ethos that is pure Star Trek, and in fact, if I had written this list a month ago, it would certainly be in the #1 spot. However...

Prodigy (2021-2024?): The first season of Prodigy is...charming. It's got some fun characters, some spectacular visuals, some interesting premises. And if the plots tend to be a little too simplistic to be engaging to an adult, hey, it's a kids' show. It's good. Solid. Above average. And if I had only the first season to go on, it would probably be in third position on this list. But then, a few weeks ago, it went ahead and dropped the best season of Star Trek in a quarter-century, and I really...I just cannot recommend this series highly enough. The sheer, ambitious scope of the narrative; the arcs it puts its character through; the cleverness of the writing; the fricking GORGEOUSNESS of it! And it does all this while redeeming deeply unpopular characters and plot points from other series, in a way that never feels forced or pandering. Not only is it the best Star Trek series of the 21st century, it's one of the best children's animated series since AtLA. Go. Go! Watch it! Watch it now!

Considering that Ezra found his wolf in Season 2, I'm curious how Ahsoka, Rex, and maybe Commander Sato reacted to Ezra's wolf form the first time? And if Ezra and Kanan meditate, does that mean they still become Loth wolves? Or do they need to be asleep or stunned to do this? 🤔

I'm also curious about that! Rex and Ahsoka would be the least astonished, they've seen some shit, especially Ahsoka. She's deeply intrigued but it makes sense to her once Ezra explains it. I think Rex will love Wolf!Ezra. He can't wait to show Wolffe lol.

In terms of Sato and the rest of Pheonix Squadron's reaction? Well first, I think there's a good chance the Ghost crew just don't even mention it for awhile. Because after Legacy (Ezra finds out he's a wolfwalker just after Legacy) Pheonix Squadron has freshly lost their base and are just running around space again. They're not likely to encounter Wolf!Ezra, when Ezra is only occasionally going aboard other ships when he's awake. And I don't think they'd even consider the wolf appearing during a mission. It's not until it actually happens that they realize being stunned counts as sleeping lol. I think Kanan especially is of the opinion they shouldn't draw attention to it unless they have to. They don't know how other people will react. They don't know how the Empire would react when they find out. And really how do you explain turning into a giant wolf when asleep?

When they establish Chopper Base is probably when Hera decides they do in fact need to have a squadron wide meeting in which they explain that if anyone sees a giant wolf on base DO NOT SHOOT IT THAT'S OUR SON. They'd explain to Sato first, and I think he'd be pretty baffled but totally chill about it. Chalks it up to more Weird Jedi Shit, and mostly just wants to know if this is gonna require some kind of accommodations and is it going to affect what sort of missions Ezra can take.

The other rebels have mixed reactions. No one actually believes it until they see Ezra transform in person. A lot of them just think the Ghost picked up a weird pet. And when the information does saturate, most of them are just like. Sounds like some Weird Jedi Shit that is Not My Business. Those who interact with the Ghost crew most often get used to it quickly and adore Wolf Ezra! They play with him and pet him and he's actually great for morale. I imagine there's a few people legitimately disturbed by it, probably the same people who are still wary of the Jedi. Not everyone grew up on tales of the Jedi as heroes. Not everyone is used to having people with weird super powers around. But the more time passes the more Wolf!Ezra becomes a totally normal part of Pheonix Squadron and eventually a bit of a legend among the wider Rebellion.

About meditating! They definitely can become wolves while meditating, but they don't have to. In fact I imagine meditation is when they have the strongest connection and control with their wolf forms and can meditate their way into wolf form without sleeping and use it to stop from wolfing when they are sleeping. If they meditate before sleeping they can basically say 'hey not tonight, ok?' Which might occasionally be practical, but it wouldn't be comfortable. They'd feel restless and itchy and sleep terribly. At times of fierce emotion or extreme urgency they can also wolf spontaneously, and that goes for any wolfwalkers not just the Jedi ones.

So according to the newest trailer/clip for season 2, the Wyldness is, as Ras says not just the lava region we saw Wyldfyre in. Among the places he lists is the forever rock, which is located in China, meaning that likely the Wyldness used to be part of Chima before the merge. That would explain the Wolf theme of the Dojo and the fact, that Ras is a tiger. However, if the dojo appears in the upcoming Garmadon comic, does that mean, that we will see Garmadon travel between the realms, into the realm of Chima
