I'm not gonna disagree with the validity of some of these points, but I still feel the need to make some of my own.

So, "shonen", of course, is merely a demographic. It isn't a genre. When people outside of Japan use "shonen", they're often just using it as shorthand for what's an actual genre: battle manga. Shonen encompasses a great deal of genres, from sports manga, romance manga, slice of life manga, and gag manga, and even those can blend together. It still amuses me a bit that smaller slice of life gag series like Nichijou or Azumanga Daioh are both shonen and nobody seems to notice. Even a yuri manga like Bloom Into You is shonen, and was published in the same magazine as Azumanga Daioh.

It should also be noted that the vast majority of battle shonen that takes off outside Japan are the ones published by Weekly Shonen Jump, which has a particular brand and image. When people harp about alleged clichés in battle shonen (regardless of whether these clichés are actually that prevalent or if they're just going solely off Dragon Ball and Naruto), it's usually the tropes frequently utilized in these particular mangas. Which, to be honest, reflects a very narrow view? It's like simplifying American comic books to just Marvel. I'd also argue that some of them don't get enough credit for their female casts (I'd point to Gintama and Black Clover as good examples), but overall...well, splitting mangas by gendered demographics naturally leads to the aforementioned issues with female representation.

Dandadan is an example of a shonen that exists outside of the Weekly Shonen Jump bubble. It's published on Jump+, which has a looser guideline for what fits the image. It could never have been published in Weekly Shonen Jump. And I think that's a big reason why people are touting it as being this big shakeup, because it's from a different publication (still by Shueisha, sure) with more room for experimentation. There's still only a limited amount of Jump+ series that have been big hits, which is partly down to it being relatively newer. It could be a good sign for the future if Jump+ keeps having hits with this level of good writing and representation.

But seriously, don't limit yourselves with the shonen manga you read. There's still a couple with genuinely good female characters, some even protagonists! I'm gonna list a few for people to check out:

1. Undead Unluck. Great romance, great action, genuinely insane plot twists, very well-characterized female cast who all get moments to develop, and Fuuko Izumo is genuinely one of the best shonen protagonists out there. 10/10 character development. There's definitely some iffy stuff early on, but hey, same with Dandadan. And if you like romance, Undead Unluck does it VERY well.

2. Akane-banashi. So imagine a sports manga, except it's not about sports, it's about rakugo. That's this series. Incredibly engaging, Akane is a fun MC, and then you delve into deeper themes about the power of art and storytelling and you start crying.

3. Magilumiere Co. LTD. More proof that locking anime adaptations of good manga to Hulu and Prime is bullshit. A Jump+ series about magical girls as an actual business for responding to monster attacks, the main protagonist is a newbie to the world of adulting and job hunting before becoming part of a small magical girl startup. The only manga I've read where "privatizing the magic industry" is an actual plot point. And yes, there is commentary on aspects of capitalism and how valuing profit over people is bad.

And those are just the ones I'm reading. That's without going into Kindergarten Wars or Shy, both series with their own cult followings and female MC's. Or hell, Frieren got super popular, and some people don't seem to realize it's published in Weekly Shonen Sunday.

So, in short...yes, Dandadan bucks a lot of clichés associated with the most popular battle shonen, but it's still speaking from a limited point of view. There IS more variety out there, you just have to look. Don't just focus on the stuff that gets the big social media reactions from the anime adaptations, focus on the smaller cult hits too.

Ways I can think of that “DanDaDan” differs from other shonen series:

* Female MC is as important as male MC

* Canon romance gets consistent development through the series. I think that’s part of the reason why the MC ships with the rivals (Aira, Jiji) aren’t as popular with the fandom for once. The main ship is actually getting good development, so the fanbase doesn’t have to make up headcanons to fill in the space.

* Flips the found family trope on its head by having the main group despise new people whenever they show up and they even actively try to kick them out. The new people only end up staying because they keep lingering around to the point that the main group just gives up and lets them stay.

* The rivals aren’t emo or angst-ridden. Aira is a delusional tryhard popular girl while Jiji is a himbo drama queen. I’d even go as far to say that the MCs are the ones who are emo and angst-ridden.

* Supporting cast is more than just important, they become integral to the story. I’d say that the further you read into DanDaDan, the more it becomes an ensemble cast where everyone is a protagonist in their own right.

* World-building is all over the place, but in a good way. Most other shonen are pretty consistent with what kind of world their characters live in. MHA is superhero-based, Naruto is ninjas and magic, Bleach is spirits, and so on. DanDaDan feels like the author just throws whatever cool shit they can think of into the story. That’s actually the reason why I wrote in a different post that DanDaDan reminds me more of Marvel/DC than any other shonen series, it manages to capture the catch-all insanity of those comics.

* Doesn’t rely on hidden power-ups. The main characters either have to outsmart the villains or they have to train to get better with the powers they already have.

* The pervert comic relief guy is actually endearing for once. Not because of his pervert tendencies, but because he’s so oblivious to how socially inept he is that it’s kind of funny. This is gonna sound strange, but he sorta reminds me of Thor in Thor Ragnarok. Full of himself and oblivious to how dumb he can be. He’s Thor without the good looks lol.

* Flips the “nerdy outcast loser somehow gets a harem” trope. Instead of making Okarun cooler than how he actually is, the story emphasizes that the women who fall for Okarun are as weird as him. Momo is a weird outcast, Aira has main character syndrome, Vamola doesn’t understand how to human because she’s literally not one, Rin thought Okarun was a vampire (and wanted him to be).

* Flips the “elderly figure in charge of the teenagers” trope. I don’t really get motherly figure vibes from Seiko Ayase, I get more “cool wine aunt who is stuck with her niece” vibes. In fact, there was the arc where Okarun showed up to her in spirit mode to get her help with fighting off the alien invasion and Seiko’s response was, “Well, I’m not in the area and I have other shit to do, so you kids figure it out.”

* The series takes the piss out of the trope of mystical/magical items that the group acquired to get their powers. I mean…the main mystical MacGuffin in the series are Okarun’s balls.

* Okarun was about to go into an “I’m weak / I wish I was stronger / I want to get stronger for my friends” breakdown, but Turbo Granny told him to shut up and keep fighting.

* Not afraid to put the “cool girl” in as many funny situations as possible. Off the top of my head, the series built up Momo as this cool, tough girl who doesn’t take shit from anyone…then several chapters later, Okarun found out she got a job at a maid cafe.

When operations go wrong, there’s little that can be done to reverse the initial mistake. Not only are lives put on the line, but so too are relationships and the foundations of friendship. Being under constant fire, unable to reach backup or safety, really wears down the body and mind. Though some may find a thrill in it, eventually that too wears away.

In your case, you had been pinned down for nearly an hour. Though your position had been defensible, it was on track to becoming more of a hazard than anything else. It wasn’t clear who was to blame for the mishap, everything having happened so fast, but one moment the team you were apart of was working together and the next you were alone with Jesse McCree.

Sighing, you pressed your back to a stone wall. It was one of the only walls that sheltered you from the flying bullets and sniper fire. Jesse was crouched across from you, trying his best to peer around the corner for the next viable bit of cover.

You picked up your earpiece, taking it from the place it had fallen when you had run for cover. Quickly bringing up two of your fingers, you activated the line. “Commander? Commander are you there?”

Jesse spared you a glance, worry in his eyes as he took in your features, before turning back to make sure no one had advanced on your position. There was a faint crackle of static before your attempt at communication was answered.

“I’m here, agent.” Reyes’ voice was rough and you could hear the noise of gunfire through his link. “What’s your status?”

You knew that he could hear the gunfire on your end as you answered. “We’re pinned down, I don’t think McCree and I will be able to get to you.”

Reyes cursed under his breath before answering. “Everyone’s on board. We’re ready to get the hell out of here. This aircraft has taken too much damage for us to wait any longer. We’ll give you as much cover as possible, but you two are gonna have to get yourselves out of there. Figure out how to get somewhere safe, you know the drill, agent.”

McCree, whose communications system was linked to yours, nodded. You could see he was too focused to give a verbal answer, so you kept speaking. “Copy that. We’re ready when you are.”

“We’ll keep in touch, agent.” The words ran through your head over and over again, even opened the door in front of you.

After Reyes had provided enough aerial cover for you and McCree to get to safety, you had both gone to the nearest safe house. Each assignment Blackwatch, or Overwatch, gave its agents was well thought out and discussed. Drop sites that were busy had cheap motels or hostels listed in their information packets, or predetermined safe houses when the locations were more secluded. In this case, it was a secluded safe house. The information sheet you had pulled up earlier made mention of a stocked kitchen, running water, and first aid supplies. What it had failed to tell you was how small the place would be.

It was practically a one room flat in the form of a cabin. Half walls separated the less private rooms, with only the bedroom and bathroom having proper privacy. The rooms were cold, the thermostat untouched for a long time, but it would do.

Flicking on a light switch, you watched as the florescent bulbs lit up the kitchenet and living space nearest the door. A deep sigh escaped you as you finally allowed your body to relax, dropping the small bag on your shoulder near the door. “Well, Cowboy, this is home for the next 48 hours.”

The brunette man behind you had the decency not to laugh as he made his way past you. “Seems so, sugar. You can take the bathroom first, I’ll take a look ‘n’ find somethin’ for-”

“Us to change into. I know. You talked about showering and getting your wounds dressed the entire way here, Jesse.” You said, smiling despite the pain of your split lip, as you went to find bath supplies.

“Wasn’t aware I talked so much.” He laughed, shaking his head and making his way to the bedroom.

“You always talk, Jesse.” You were already halfway into the bathroom, a towel in hand, when you heard him laugh in reply.

You took your time removing your armor and torn, military grade suit. It wasn’t often that you came out of a skirmish so battered, so the shock didn’t fully register until you’d locked yourself in the room alone. Sighing, you focused on getting out of you clothes and tried to ignore the sounds of bullets echoing in your head. It was more painful a process than you’d expected, as you’d gotten grazed by more bullets and scraped by more gravel than you cared to admit.

Just as you let out a hiss, there came a knock on the bathroom door. You heard Jesse’s spurs jangle before he spoke. “You alright, darlin’? I left some clothes out on a chair here.”

You called out, “Just fine, Jesse! Thank you, I’ll grab them on my way out.”

“Sure thing.” He smiled as he spoke, and though you couldn’t see it, you could hear it in voice.

It made you smile as well, knowing you had your best friend looking out for you. The longer you thought about Jesse and his kindness, his thoughtful but flirty nature, the more your cheeks reddened and stomach fluttered. You’d harbored feelings for the modern gunslinger for a long time, nearly as long as you’d been friends. It was something you kept to yourself, mainly because of Blackwatch’s strict dating guidelines for its agents. Stepping into the shower, you knew the next 48 hours would be tough to get through.

Stepping out of the shower, wrapped in a towel, you found yourself staring directly at the bare chest of your cowboy partner. “Jesse.”

“Darlin’.” The smile on his face grew, becoming a large smirk, as he noticed the blush across your face. “Clothes are over there. Mind gettin’ out o’ the way? Man’s got to shower just as much as the next person.”

You shook your head, blinking quickly as you looked back at his face. “You’re the one in my way, Jesse.”

Chuckling, he stepped aside and let you grab the clothes before heading into the bathroom. The image of his bare chest replayed in your mind as you dressed, despite you having seen him that way before. Jesse was built well, sturdy and muscular. His body had definition and flexed with strength when he moved. Slim, muscled, and padded in just the right places, you’d say. Attractive. That’s what it was. Jesse had an attractive body and personality.

Perhaps that’s why you’d spent so long harboring feelings for him, when you could have tried getting over it. Jesse was a good man, though he had his flaws, and he was always kind to you. He had been your first friend in Blackwatch, your first confidant. You’d been thick as thieves for the longest time, attached at the hip. You’d known him for so long, that it hadn’t been a surprise to you that you found his body similarly attractive. It had been painful to watch him go through relationships and flings, wishing one day he would chose you and stay.

Sighing, you tried to get rid of those intrusive thoughts by taking care of your injuries. Knowing Jesse McCree so well also meant knowing his trouble with commitment and genuine emotion. He got scared, you could easily tell, and pushed people away when they got close. He may have been worth it, worth the bumps in the road, but no one else knew him enough to know that. Not like you did.

Clink. Clink. Clink. Your thoughts were interrupted by McCree coming out of the shower, fully dressed, and fiddling with his peacekeeper. He seemed to have taken care of his flesh wounds while in the bathroom, a couple bandages visible beneath the black shirt he wore. His damp hair stuck to his forehead, no hat on his head, and accentuated the small cut running down his temple.

He barely looked up as he stopped in the doorway. “Darlin’-”, He started.

You shook your head, standing to take his pistol from his grip. “Let me look at that cut, Jesse.”

Looking up at you, he gave you a gentle smile. “No need, darlin’, it’s not very deep. Ought to heal like a charm.”

“No, sir, can’t have that getting infected now. Besides,” You glanced at the only, small bed in the room and then at the couch just beyond the doorway to the room. “We can talk about sleeping arrangements as I do.”

Wordlessly, he sat at the edge of the bed and let you get to work. “You know, that couch is old.”

“Mhm,” You focused on your task, making sure to pay attention to his words nonetheless. “It’ll likely be a back killer.”

“Absolutely. Reckon I should take it.” He moved his head a little, wincing at the pressure you put against the cut.

“I have the better back, Jess.”

“Sure, but we wanna keep it that way. ‘Sides, I wouldn’t be much o’ a gentleman if I let you take it, would I?” His comment made you laugh and he smiled at you, glad to see you so happy.

“Stuck in the West again? Acts of chivalry are rare nowadays, Jess.” You said and pulled your hands away from his face, finished with your work.

“We could share.” His suggestion threw you off, especially when you saw he wasn’t joking.

“You sure?” Your voice was a little nervous as you spoke, something he picked up on.

“As the day I was born. Only if you’re comfortable, darlin’.”

“Yeah. Okay,” You smiled, helping him to his feet.

Jesse was wide awake, his thoughts running a mile an hour. On his back, he could feel where your back met his side, he could feel each even breath you took. He didn’t have any reason to suspect you were awake. You lay facing away from him, eyelids heavy, breath even, and mind somewhere else. He assumed you’d fallen asleep.

With a soft sigh, he pulled his hands from behind his head and turned around. He tried his best not to wake you, keeping his chest from being flush against your back. He tried his best to keep his hands from touching you, but couldn’t help it when he reached up to brush some hair out of your face. It caught your attention, but you didn’t move, too sleepy to care. You just listened as he sighed once more and shifted just a little closer.

“Darlin’,” He whispered. “I’ve gotten ‘round to thinkin’...”

He paused, almost as if trying to convince himself to stop talking. “I’ve been thinkin’, and I can’t live without you. I’m scared. I’ve loved you for so long now but I’m jus’ so afraid. I could’ve lost you today. I don’t know what went wrong, I don’t want that fear of not knowing in my heart, but I ain’t strong enough to tell you-”

He took a deep, steadying breath before reaching out to you. He wrapped his arm around your waist and, carefully so as to not ‘wake’ you, pulled you completely into him. “Look at me. Confessin’ in the dark while you sleep, not hearin’ a word. It’s pathetic. Truth is, no matter how much I try, I can’t seem to say the words to your face. I want to look at you and say it, I want to keep you close, but I’m a coward. I’ve never been the type of man to commit to no one like that. I don’t think I’m the kind of man to love like that. Never have been. But damn, darlin’, if I can’t help wantin’ that with you. Want to keep you safe, by my side, always, but... but I ain’t the type of man worthy of you like that...”

He trailed off and you, now wide awake, could feel small drops of water hit the back of your neck. Jesse McCree, the strong, charming cowboy was crying. It broke your heart, so much so that all the words you’d thought to say to him left your mind. He was so worth it, so much more than he gave himself credit for, and you loved him. Just as he was.

Turning around, you watched his face mold from sorrow into shock. He tried speaking, but you didn’t give him the chance, “Darlin’-”

Your lips met his before he could utter any more words. It was a soft, emotional kiss that tasted of salt. His tears fell harder, and you only pulled away to hug him closer. Wrapping your arms around him and locking your legs together, you didn’t have to say much to get him to hear you.

“You are my everything, Jesse. I’ve always loved you.”

Hargreeves House Masterpost

So sometimes you’re just there watching Umbrella Academy and you think “Hey, this is a really big confusing house, it would help to have a map of it!”, but no one’s done that so you have to (and also you’re a trivia nerd who wants to).

There will be a couple inconsistencies with certain parts of the show because the house wasn’t all filmed on one location, so those inconsistencies are in the show itself, but I’ve done my best to be as accurate as possible with as much of the show as possible

This is gonna get long, so I’ll put it under the cut

Okay, let’s start with the basics

The house forms roughly this shape

you can see it in this screenshot, with the courtyard in the middle there, and the courtyard is enclosed on all sides except for the opening to the right

It’s got a gazebo but not a whole lot else, it’s a pretty dismal place.

The reason I’ve split the stuff around it into house and training rooms is that the house curves around the courtyard but basically ends there (where I’ve marked on the diagram), the windows here mark the back of the house (give or take a small amount) and look onto the courtyard

However, this staircase

isn’t one that appears in the house, and I don’t think Hargreeves would allow the kids into the courtyard if he didn’t own all the buildings around it, and given how they’re doing exercise stuff here I assume this part of the building functioned for schoolwork, fitness and powers testing

(We don’t see any of this part of the building other than the stairs, but there’s plenty of it, so you can go wild with the headcanons here)

Now to the house itself - we’ll take this floor by floor.

Basement Level

The dance scene isn’t 100% accurate for where stuff is in the house, because they cared more about showing the people than the house, but it’s a pretty good guideline

The basement level is laid out more or less like this (doors/entrances are green)

(I’ve listed the staircases by colour because there’s more than one set)

So the whole academy wasn’t originally one building, Hargreeves more or less just bought the whole block and then knocked down the connecting walls, you can see them around in certain places where he hasn’t bothered to fix it up, the doorway between the stairs and the kitchen is an excellent example, as you can see here

(if you’re looking at this from the kitchen you’ll see the utilities, but like I said, discrepancies)

Now next to the main entrance of the Academy is what used to be a laundromat, and that laundromat has it’s own basement entrance that goes down from the street, it’s where Vanya and Leonard enter through in episode 6

And that leads into the kitchen

We don’t know much about this part of the house other than what we see in the dance scene, but we can see Pogo’s room, and we can presume from the look of the place next to it (and also bc there’s nowhere else for it to be), that that’s where the elevator down to Vanya’s dungeon is (probably quite deep underground, as the elevator takes a while to go up and down)

Ground Floor

The ground floor layout looks something like this

The entrance hall and living room we’re all pretty familiar with, that’s where most of the scenes in the house take place

Next to them in the dance scene we can see two things, the continuation of the red staircase coming up from the basement, and Grace working in a kitchen

This kitchen actually has an oven and stuff, so I assume it’s where most of the food prep gets done, as opposed to the basement kitchen which is a lot more chill of a space

We don’t technically know what’s behind any of this, but there has to be something given how the floor above it has rooms there, so if I had to guess I’d say it was more spaces Grace needs

The part at the back again, we only know is there because of the floor above it, and the second floor is entirely Sir Reginald’s back there, so this part probably is too

The second floor is the most complicated, so I’ll take it in parts

Second Floor - Left

This is where most of the kids rooms are, and is most characterised by the long corridor with the fighting instructions along it

The original layout for this part of the house was something like this

(The blank space is left because there is a corridor there, but we don’t ever see what it leads to, and the cues we get from the scene don’t make sense with the layout of the house)

The red stairs continue throughout the house, the spaces left in this case because it’s just part of the corridor, though there is a door downwards

The bathroom is directly across from what was originally Vanya’s room, and there’s fighting posters along that corridor too

Now I say originally, because here’s the interesting thing - at some point Vanya’s room was removed

Our first scene we see of the kids rooms, you can see Klaus and Vanya’s rooms are clearly separate, here (and both really tiny)

However when Vanya goes back in episode 10 to all the memories in these rooms, it’s not her room anymore, it’s just Klaus’

And this continues into the present day - here’s Klaus’ room now, and you can see the divide in wall where it used to be two rooms

It’s also still got both doors, in this scene Five enters through one and leaves through the other

What happened that Vanya was removed from her room? I don’t know, but I’d imagine that had something to do with Reginald’s attempts to isolate her (and it definitely contributed to this being a bad memory for her)

(Also on the subject of Five - when he left Vanya’s room was still on this floor so that’s another thing to think about)

Diego’s, Allison’s, and Luther’s rooms stay pretty consistent throughout the series, here for reference

At the end of the corridor is the green staircase, which leads up to the attic (and also connects to the central part of the house)

Second Floor - Central

Not much to say here, it’s all very pretty but we know what it looks like, or you can go back and watch for yourself, this part is in most house scenes

Second Floor - Hargreeves’ Rooms

We don’t know that much about the layout of Hargreeves’ rooms, we see a lot of it but not in relation to itself, we know it contains Hargreeves’ bedroom, study, the surveillance tapes room, and many other rooms, it’s all blue and dramatic

Here’s what we do know

Second Floor - Right

There’s not much of note here, it’s basically just the walkway, so I’ll just include the dance scene screenshot

Third Floor/Attic

The layout of the third floor looks like this

This is far enough over that half of it faces the alley, with the dumpster where Klaus chucked Hargreeves’ stuff

(here’s the fire escape from Five’s room)

(and Five’s room itself)

Closer to the street is the attic room, which we see from the balcony a lot (I mean okay upon further looking it’s probably just an extension of the fire escape but it’s a balcony now bc I don’t feel like changing my floor plan)

And here’s the attic room itself, with our only glimpse of the rest of the attic beyond it

It’s also the place Klaus gets Diego to tie him up

In the hallway we can see the top of the green stairs, and also a room to the right, which we know nothing about but I’m going to assume is Ben’s room, because no one ever goes in, and it’s the most convenient place to put it

(It also means that the attic housed the two kids who died/went missing, which would explain why Diego and Klaus mention they hate being up there, and Allison goes up there when she’s upset)

We can also assume there’s stairs up to the roof somewhere here, but we never see them

Roof

Honestly, this is more of a courtyard than the courtyard.

On the left is where the attic stairs would come up, and is probably the only access point to this whole place, since that’s the route Hargreeves uses, even though his rooms are on the other side

The only place of note here is the greenhouse, where Allison and Luther’s fort was

But yes, that’s a complete layout of the Hargreeves’ house (or as much as we see in the show anyway), now go forth and write more informed fics or come up with headcanons or whatever you wanna do with this info

Buckle up for a life story!

I’m not sure how much I’ve talked about this, but here’s how I figured out I was gay and what christian school taught me and how its okay to be gay!

Trigger warnings: Suicide, self harm, derogatory terms

This school was hard core Christian. It was run out of a church, small town based, very much so had that bible thumping redneck agenda going on. Most of the kids going to this school also went to church there and their parents worked for the school, church, or both, and EVERYONE knew each other and who they were and where they stood on the totem pole. If your parents worked for the school or church and you went to church there, you were automatically higher on the pole, and sad for me, being an outsider, parents didn’t work for the school or go to church there, I was smack bottom. Between the totem pole and the typical private school cliques, it was social hell for poor me. I was a California avocado swimming in a pool of southern sweet tea sat atop a mountain of bibles, with no end in sight.

So as a 10 year old 4th grader, moving from a Californian private school that was relatively laid back to a southern private school with strict uniforms and even taught Latin, it was a huge culture shock. At this same time I was also beginning puberty, and that’s about the time you start discovering which gender you prefer, if any at all and let me tell you that first year of being questioned which boy I liked when I really was starting to take a liking to the girls, was weird. I felt ashamed of it, but at the same time not. The stuff I was taught growing up that I should get married to a man and give him kids and be a home maker was telling me it was wrong, but something deep inside was telling me no, this is right, you don’t need to marry a man, you don’t like men (to be found out later I’m actually a bit more flexible lol), and it was deeply confusing. I saw my fellow classmates and saw them all expressing interest in the opposite sex, and I really was just hiding the fact that I took a preference to the girls by saying I really didn’t care. To be noted, though, I had been struggling with my gender identity since I was very young, before I even started kindergarten, so whether at the time I was straight or gay, it was changing most definitely.

Around this same year, 4th grade, I was introduced to an instant messaging app called Palringo after I got an iPod touch for Christmas. A quick overview of this app, at the time I got in to it, all you needed was an email, and you could have an account, and you could join whatever group you wanted. The age restrictions at the time were technically 13+, but hey look at me, rebellious 10 year old. I ended up joining a group for teens and lied, saying I was 16, using a fake picture and everything. I posed as this very girly girl in my online persona, I was somewhat flirtatious, “dated” a mod from the group (dating being we had each others usernames in our profiles with hearts) and learned way too much, way too soon. I was 10 years old and the people in this group thought I was 16 because I lied and were telling me about sex, anatomy of both sexes, and teaching me slang and phrases one would find in urban dictionary.

I became obsessed with this app. It took over my life. I didn’t really talk to people at school anymore, I didn’t talk to my one friend on my block, and basically my last couple years of elementary school disappeared on this app where I learned about sex, sexuality, gender, and drama. By the time I was 11, I had become pretty solid in the fact that I didn’t like boys, but pretended I did at school. Instead I was open about liking girls on Palringo, since people didn’t judge me there. I eventually found a group of people who I consider to be my high school friends. When I met them, I came clean about my lie with another lie, just not as far fetched. I told them I was 13 instead of 16, yet in reality I was still just 11 or 12. And I got along well with these people. I even met my current girlfriend during this time in these groups. But my real life in person social life was dead. I connected with no one, I became severely depressed, and by the time I was 13 or 14, I was self harming.

My depression came on about the time I was 12 or 13. I was t this Christian school that I didn’t belong in, I couldn’t be myself there, and my social life was dead between that and palringo taking over my life. I was also dealing with gender identity issues and being scared to talk about it with anyone. I certainly couldn’t talk to my parents about it, I had attempted to tell them about liking girls and being gay and they told me I was going to hell and took all my electronics and went through my private possessions. I couldn’t talk to anyone at school about it because that place was the same way, Christian and frowned on it. It’s not like I can change who I’m attracted to. So again I turned to palringo, which was fine communication wise, it just lacked that physical aspect. I couldn’t hear them say the words, or I couldn’t feel them hug me, and I really thrive off human touch in all forms, romantic, platonic, etc.

I quickly spiraled into being suicidal at the age of 14, already been self harming for about 8 months, at that point. I still have horrible scars from it that I’ll probably have forever. I had been seriously dating my girlfriend (who I’m still with!!) for a year by the time I was 15. It was long distance and text based, sometimes we could talk on the phone but had to make sure our parents didn’t find out, so that was very limited. She has talked me out of suicide a few times now, but the most notable time was the very first time. After living in Alabama and going to this Christian school, my dad’s job moved back to California, so we picked up and moved again. I was about 15 I believe, or 14 about to be 15, and we moved in the last third of my 8th grade year. My parents, for financial reasons, decided to put me in public school for the last third of 8th grade. I had never attended public school at this point. I’d only ever attended private Christian schools. Oh man did this public school almost kill me. I experienced outright bullying like never before. I’d experienced it before but it was always subtle and underhanded. At this public school, it was very direct. I was called fag, fatty, fat lesbian, and more of those in other variations, along with bullying in the form of the popular girls wouldn’t let me change in the bathroom because they didn’t like the fact I wouldn’t change in front of them. They would harass me and physically push me around. And of course I didn’t fight back, I was taught my whole life to turn the other cheek.

That small span of 3 months, I almost put a bullet in my head. I couldn’t talk to my parents, they disapproved of the fact that I was gay, they didn’t like the people I hung out with because they were also gay, I wouldn’t have gotten sympathy or help from them. I knew where my dad kept the guns. We were in a small apartment that my dad’s company was providing us and my dad stored his guns in the closet in his room. I planned it for a week. Grocery day, I would come home from school while my mom and sister were still out, I’d grab the hand gun, load it with one bullet, and stash it under my bed, which I did. It sat under my bed for 3 days. Every night, I sat in bed thinking about pulling it out and finally ending it. For all I knew, high school would just be another 4 years of this bullying. One night, I was sitting in bed after a particularly bad day. They bullying had been extra bad and I was beyond reasoning. I finally pulled that gun out. I was talking to my girlfriend, Jali, and telling her my goodbyes. I told her goodbye and was talking to her, trying to calm my storm and get the balls to just end it. She had nothing but soothing words for me. Somehow she knew I was serious, despite me not actually telling her what I was doing or about to do. I remember putting the gun in my mouth, loaded and cocked, all I had to do was flex that index finger, and I would be gone. Jali had sent me a message saying “I will miss you. You have been nothing but a light in my life and I don’t know what I’ll do without you. Please don’t do this.” I remember it vividly. I can see the screen in my head to this day as if I’m reading it all over again. I put the gun away. Unloaded it and stashed it back under my bed. And I cried. I cried so hard my eyes hurt for days. I bottled so much up and hid so much from everyone in an attempt to be the person my parents want me to be and to be strong for all my friends and for Jali that I was being broken from the inside out. I forever thank her for keeping me alive that night and the other couple times I was close to ending it. She kept me around to finally meet her beautiful self and finally find peace and acceptance.

This was a tough post to write, and it didn’t even really scratch to surface of the things I experienced in middle school and high school. Christian school showed me that even in extreme peer pressure to be like everyone else and in strict guidelines of who to be, you can still pull through and be your own light and be yourself. The internet and Palringo have shown me things my parents haven’t even talked to me about yet. I’m 20 years old and my parents still have not had a sex talk with me. I learned it from the internet and my internet friends. They taught me it’s okay to be me and who I am and that I am my own person, not something to please my parents.

Don’t fall down the same hole I did. Talk about your feelings. Be happy, be yourself, and don’t let anyone tell you who to be, from your parents to your friends to your partner, you’re the only person to tell yourself who you are

Reddit Marketing Strategies for Those Who Don’t Have Time for Reddit Marketing

Reddit is one of the most vibrant communities on the Internet and a powerful source of attention. A positive Reddit mention can mean thousands of visits to your website or your product.

Your audience may be there. Opportunities certainly exist there.

Should you be there, too?

It’s a tricky question to answer because one of the first rules for marketing on Reddit — one of the first rules for marketing on any social media site, really — is that you have to be genuinely engaged and committed to the communities you’re part of.

But there’s good news. You can gain so much from the awesome people at Reddit whether or not you have the time to fully dive in. Yes, there are marketing tactics to drive meaningful traffic. But there are also a handful of other ways to benefit by learning from the community, engaging with the community, and building a thoughtful Reddit strategy.

Yet when you hear about strategies for marketing to social networks, you rarely hear about Reddit.

This isn’t to disparage all the great guides that people have written about Reddit marketing. They’re really good! These guides have some great tips in them, which we’ll do our best to condense into the most actionable takeaways that you can put to good use today.

So why does Reddit fly under-the-radar when it comes to social media marketing options?

Well, one of the key things to note about Reddit is that it’s not exactly welcoming to organic, native promotion. Reddit wants authentic contributions — which of course makes sense. That’s how the best social networks thrive!

This ethos is really well-captured in this phrase from Reddit’s community guidelines:

It’s perfectly fine to be a redditor with a website, it’s not okay to be a website with a reddit account.

Hmm, well, all of us brands and businesses are definitely websites. What are we to do?

One great thing about Reddit is that, while its guidelines are protective, they’re not meant to be exclusionary. There are ways for marketers to make use of Reddit in many ways, whether you’re interested in becoming a redditor or not, and whether you’re looking for organic or paid. Even if you don’t have time for full-scale Reddit marketing, there are ways you can gain from the Reddit community.

Reddit Marketing Strategies

1. Use Reddit as a Customer Research Tool to Find the Latest Trends

We believe this strategy can work for all marketers — whether you’re a redditor or not, and even if you only have small pockets of time to commit.

The great thing about this tip is that it doesn’t require you to devote yourself to becoming a seasoned Reddit contributor. Anyone can use Reddit for research, right now. It only takes a few minutes, and there’s a ton to gain for your marketing.

The premise is simple:

You can gain marketing insight by using Reddit as a research tool to see what people are talking about and what’s trending right now.

Step one: Find the subreddits that are relevant to your brand or business.

This will come in handy for the Reddit strategies we mention later on, too.

There are a couple different ways to search for subreddits. You can go straight to Reddit and search for the topics that you’re interested in. The search results will show you a list of suggested communities to join as well as a list of the most popular content related to your search term.

Another way to find subreddits is on a subreddit itself. The subreddit “find-a-reddit” is a place for people to ask questions about certain topics and then the community responds with ideas of subreddits to join.

Also, there are some great third-party options for subreddit searches. too.

One of the best is Redditlist which aggregates the most popular subreddits and lets you search for keywords. Also, Redditlist gives you some neat data on the subreddits, like how many subscribers it has and how fast it’s growing.

Generally, the larger the subreddit, the faster you’ll be able to gain research insights. And of course, when you get into advertising potential, the larger the subreddit, the larger the audience.

Once you’ve found your “people” on Reddit, the next steps for researching are totally up to you.

You can go the super manual way and just navigate to each of the subreddits directly and browse them. If you go this route, I’d recommend setting up a regular reminder to visit things daily or weekly, depending on the volume of the subreddit.

And another way that works really well if you’re doing research or content at scale is to plug your subreddits into a content aggregator like Feedly. We do this for social media content on our Buffer feeds. This will pull in all of the subreddit threads directly into Feedly where you can browse them cleanly all at once. We’ve gained a lot of insights into social media trends by following Reddit conversations over the past months.

The one thing missing from the Feedly approach is going to be the upvotes and rankings for content. You won’t see this in Feedly. So what you can do instead is sort the content using Feedly’s popularity option, which scores posts according to their popularity on Feedly and other platforms.

Then just like that, you’ve built your research engine. You can use it for things like:

Hearing what questions people are asking

Noticing what topics are getting the most attention

Keeping an eye on upcoming trends and competitor products, and

Catching news stories you might have otherwise missed

While we’re on the topic of research, let’s go to our Reddit strategy number two, which you can also put to use whether you’re a redditor or not.

2. Use Reddit to get ideas on how to write catchy headlines

One factor into why content does well on Reddit — other than the quality of the content itself — is how something is framed or worded in the title. Redditors make great use of this space to show off what their post is about. Marketers can learn a lot from this!

You can observe the copywriting on Reddit to see what kind of styles are resonating with people and getting upvoted. Anything at the top of your chosen subreddits will be good to see. You can also go to the Reddit homepage or the subreddit “all” and check out the most popular posts across all of Reddit.

Then you can use these writing insights to feed back into your blog post headlines and email subject lines, just like that!

3. Connect with people on Reddit who want to engage with your brand

Though Reddit might not want marketers in their midst, the topics do occasionally shift to products … maybe even your product. A good social media practice is to be present with your customers and audience wherever they are, which means lending a listening ear to Reddit.

You can do this with a manual search, keeping tabs on any brand mentions that happen to come in. You can also look into some social support tools that have this functionality built in.

When you’re choosing to respond, be sure you understand the context of the conversation you’re jumping into, then feel free to jump in and be helpful. There’s a fear with marketing on Reddit that the backlash for bad marketing can be swift and severe.��But If you approach your conversations with authenticity, then you should be in good shape.

4. Get more traffic from Reddit (the right way)

When people talk about Reddit marketing, they’re often thinking of ways to get traffic from Reddit to their website. If you’re interested in using Reddit for referral traffic, then let’s start with some of the advice we mentioned earlier …

First and foremost, you must be an authentic contributor to the Reddit community.

There’s no way around this. If you want to drive organic traffic from Reddit, then you can’t just show up and promote your stuff. You have to genuinely take part in the community.

The only other shortcut to Reddit traffic is through advertising, which we’ll get to in a minute. But for organic referral traffic from Reddit, it all starts with you getting involved.

And once you’re involved, here are the next steps to follow.

1. Find your ideal subreddits.

Again, you can do this by searching Reddit or by using a tool like Redditlist.

2. Understand the Reddit demographics

On the macro scale, Reddit’s primary demographic is males between the ages of 25 and 44. The overwhelming majority of users come from the U.S., in particular San Francisco and Seattle.

But that’s by far not the only crowd that’s on there.

Especially with Reddit’s subreddit system, you can find huge pockets of engaged communities that are specific to your niche.

So when it comes to your Reddit traffic strategy, you can take a couple of different swings:

You can swing for the fences and aim to reach the front page of Reddit, where everyone can see your content.

Or, you can target specific niches on subreddits. These will have lower reach than the 330 million users we talked about earlier, but they do have significant sizes: Many subreddits boast 100,000 and more users.

Here are a couple more things to keep in mind if you’re looking to get traffic from Reddit.

5. Earn karma points by giving value to the community

Karma points function as a scorecard for Reddit users and are earned every time you share links and comments. These links and comments can be upvoted or downvoted, which corresponds to the rising and falling of your karma.

To be successful on Reddit, you need to build up your karma points. At least a few hundred points are needed to show that you’re serious about taking part in the communities. Some subreddits even require a minimum amount of karma before you can post.

Karma points don’t necessarily affect the virality of your content, but they are a good signal to your fellow redditors of whether you’re on Reddit to genuinely be involved or whether you’re just there to self-promote. When you’re building up karma points, there are a couple of workflows that can help …

Get involved in popular subreddits like today-I-learned and Ask-Reddit. These are some easy, breezy places to get started with commenting.

And when you’re link sharing, you can build Reddit into your usual content workflow and share to Reddit anytime you would share to Twitter and Facebook, too.

Ok, now when it comes time to post your content to Reddit, here are some ways to make sure it gets as much traction as possible.

6. Reverse-engineer the popular headlines of your subreddit

Like many things on social, one of the key aspects will be the title. The same goes for Reddit threads.

Look at the structure of how these titles are created. Notice what gets upvoted and what doesn’t. Then you can take these insights and put them back into the title that you write.

On the Grow and Convert blog, they talk about a couple of headline formulas that work really well on Reddit.

The first is …

Need [x]? Here’s [y]

For example, you could say: Tensed shoulders? Try these few stretches (very work-friendly!)

And the second headline formula is …

[specific time before] I [did something]. I will now [explain to you/share even more detail/teach you how/explain what happened].

And an example of this is: 3 months ago I posted the exact process on how I made $150,000 selling T-shirts on Amazon. I will now explain the exact steps you can take to earn your first $1,000,000 selling on Amazon via the Shopify integration with ZERO inventory.

The Foundation blog also did a study on Reddit titles, and they found some general rules to follow.

Posts with titles between 60 and 80 characters got the most upvotes.

Posts with titles that were longer than 120 characters or shorter than 20 characters fared the worst.

And their overall advice probably sounds familiar: The best approach to ensure that you’re writing a title is to review the top 15-20 posts within a subreddit.

The research really pays off!

Additionally, it’s worthwhile to pay attention to some of the trends on Reddit. For instance, the most frequently used phrase in titles is “if you have …” which is very similar to the “need this? try this” formula that we mentioned a moment ago.

And another favorite topic of redditors is year-end lists or year-ahead posts. Some of the most common numbers in titles are years like 2018 and 2019.

So if you authentically engage with the community and write good content with titles that resonate, then you stand a great chance of succeeding on Reddit. One last tip we’ll mention is about promoting your content on Reddit … in addition to posting on your chosen subreddit, you can also

7. Cross-post to other subreddits to make sure it’s seen by as many people as possible.

When you do this, you can click the “cross post” button at the bottom of your original thread to cross-post it to any other subreddit. One thing to note: You’ll want to use this strategy wisely and not be overly promotional with every post you share.

8. Use Reddit paid ads to place your content

Reddit advertising is in its early stages compared to other social sites, so there’s still room here to get good returns.

Reddit advertising works on a cost-per-click basis. You can optimize your campaigns for reach, video views, traffic, and conversions. The video views are especially great because videos are one of the most engaging types of content on Reddit.

For targeting, you can choose to show your ad to all of Reddit or you can focus on certain subreddits.

I certainly understand that line of thinking. You’re living paycheck to paycheck, barely making ends meet, and it just seems impossible to pay down debt when you have a low income and little (or no) extra money to work with.

But when it comes down to it, paying off debt is rarely about how much money you make. Most of the time getting out of debt is more about how you manage your money and less about how much you have.

How to Pay Off Debt When You Live Paycheck to Paycheck and Don’t Have any Money

In this article I’ll show you some great tips to help you pay off debt, even if you have a low income. You’ll discover there actually is a path to debt freedom even when you have only a small income to work with.

What is the Definition of Low Income?

Unfortunately, it’s normal to be in debt. Of course when you have a lot of debt payments every month you don’t have a lot of money in your pocket for anything else. This is especially true when you have a modest income to work with.

So what does it mean to have a low income?

Even if you make a good living you may be classified as Low Income depending on the size of your household.

The Federal guidelines define “Low Income” as those who make twice the Federal poverty level. Using the guidelines for 2015, this is what that looks like for households of different sizes:

Household of 1 = $23,540

Household of 2 = $31,860

Household of 3 = $40,180

Household of 4 = $48,500

Household of 5 = $56,820

Household of 6 = $65,140

Household of 7 = $73,460

Household of 8 = $81,780

What Does Living Paycheck to Paycheck Mean?

I don’t know of any official definition of living paycheck to paycheck. But what it basically means is that you’re spending all the money you make every month (and usually more!) just to pay the bills and support your lifestyle. Putting money into savings doesn’t happen.

One of the curious things about living paycheck to paycheck is that it has nothing to do with your income.

There are plenty of high income earners that live paycheck to paycheck too, just like people with small and medium incomes. It’s not about how much money you make, it’s how you manage it that makes the difference.

Does Income Really Matter When You’re Getting Out of Debt?

Even though your income doesn’t determine whether or not you can pay off debt, there are some differences in how you’ll need to approach it depending on how much money you make.

Paying Off Debt With a Low Income

When you have a small income and you’re paying down debt, things can get really tight. If you’re in this category, you probably can’t cut your expenses much, if at all. So it might take you longer to get out of debt than if you had a higher income, but it’s definitely not impossible.

You’ll have to pay extremely close attention to where every dollar goes, and you may have to find ways to earn extra money. But when you’re diligent, your efforts eventually pay off in a huge way!

Paying Off Debt With a Middle Income or High Income

If you have a middle or higher income, paying off debt will be a little easier for you. Simply cutting expenses saves a lot of money you can put toward paying off debt without sacrificing any basic needs.

Since you have a bigger shovel (your income) to dig yourself out of the hole, you may not have to cut back as much as you would if you had a smaller income.

But if you have huge amounts of debt, you may have to resort to some of the tips for paying off debt I’ll talk about below that are over and above just cutting back on expenses.

Things You Can Do to Start Paying Down Debt

So there are a few things you absolutely have to do if you want to be successful at paying off your debt. They’ll set you up for permanent success so that you’ll never have to live paycheck to paycheck again!

First, You Have to Believe You Can Pay Off Your Debt

Especially when you have a modest income, it’s hard to believe that it’s even possible for you to get out of debt. But in order to get the job done and pay off debt for good, you have to believe your goal is achievable.

You have to tune into the mindset that there are tons of people that have gone before you and achieved the financial success you’re looking for. In fact, some of them were in worse shape than you before they started.

You can do this!

Next, You Need to Know Where Your Money is Going

One of the most basic reasons over 2/3 people live paycheck to paycheck is because most people don’t keep close track of their money.

Money flows in and out of their life without a lot of forethought, then at the end of the month they have no clue why they wound up with more month than money.

You have to know how your money flows so it doesn’t leak out everywhere.

Below are the first two things you should do to get those leaks under control.

Keep Track of Your Spending for 30 Days

The first thing I always recommend is to keep track of every dollar you spend for the next 30 days. You can use the note taking app in your smartphone or a little notebook you carry with you.

It doesn’t really matter which method you use as long as you record every single purchase, no matter how small.

This is a simple but powerful exercise. It helps you start to understand where your money goes and how it flows. Plus it gets you ready for the next step, which is learning to do a budget.

Learn to Do a Budget

Once you’ve written down every transaction for the last 30 days, you’re ready to start doing a written budget. Of course, you don’t have to use a pen and paper if you don’t want to. Use a spreadsheet, an app, or whatever works for you.

However, your budget has to be very detailed if you want it to work. Just writing down your bills ain’t gonna get it. The point of doing a budget is to plan your spending for the next month so every dollar has a specific place to go.

Many times just the act of doing a written budget helps free up a few hundred dollars a month you were otherwise wasting. If that’s the case for you, then you can use that money to start paying down debt faster.

But if you’ve done your budget, cut every expense to the bone, and your income is still not enough to pay everything, don’t fret! There are still ways you can make your budget work. I’ll address that in just a minute below.

Then You Can Devise a Strategy to Pay Off Your Debt

Once you know how your money flows, then you can start putting together a plan to pay off debt.

It’s very important to have a written plan to work from. Most people have a tendency to “wing it”, which usually doesn’t turn out well. But when you have a good solid plan for getting out of debt, it’s easy focus on paying off debt by working your plan.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a lot of extra money. You can still get your debts paid off in due time just by working your plan.

What if You’re Low Income Isn’t Enough to Pay Down Your Debt?

You might be in a position where your income just isn’t enough to pay the bills.

Yes, I know that sucks.

But it doesn’t mean you’re in an impossible situation and you’ll never get out of debt. It just means you have to do a few things differently and maybe make a few more sacrifices to get the job done. You CAN do this!

Below are a couple of things you can do to increase your income and get the extra money you need to pay off your debt.

Sell Your Stuff

Everybody has stuff they don’t need and don’t use. You can sell your old stuff in a garage sale, on Ebay, or even on Amazon!

Sell everything that’s not bolted down!

Get rid of so much stuff that the dog is afraid he’s next!

Sell the stuff that got you into debt in the first place!

Of course, you likely won’t be able to sell enough stuff to pay off all your debt, but it’s a good start. It’ll get you the traction you’ll need to start making some progress in your situation.

Find Ways to Earn Extra Income to Pay Off Debt

The next thing you can do is find ways to make extra money. Even $50-$100 every month helps to accelerate paying off your debt that much faster!

But I’m betting you can do even better than that…

I’ve discovered in doing a lot of surveys and talking to a lot of people over the years that there are a lot of underemployed people out there. I’ve also found there are many more that are unhappy with their job.

Excel at Work to Increase Your Income

One good thing you can do to increase your income is to find ways to be more valuable to your employer. If you’re just average at your job you can only expect to be compensated with an average wage.

But when you find ways to excel at work, eventually you’ll earn more because you add so much value. Here are a few ways to make that happen:

Get more certifications and training than your coworkers.

Do the types of jobs your coworkers shy away from.

Develop a reputation as the “go to” person in one or two particular areas at your job.

Develop advanced skills that your coworkers lack.

Also, if you feel like you’re not getting paid as much as you should and your employer just won’t budge on a salary increase, then you can always search for a job that pays more.

One thing I consistently teach is that it doesn’t matter how much money you make, it’s about the plan. Whether you have a low income or make well into six figures, you can be broke if you don’t manage your money right.

But the great thing is that lack of income doesn’t have to keep you trapped living paycheck to paycheck for the rest of your life!

Even if you don’t have any money you can still pay off debt and live life on your own financial terms. It just takes the right strategy, some hard work, and some patience. But once you take the leap and do what it takes to achieve debt freedom, you will NEVER go back!
