The Enlightenment
The Enlightenment (Age of Reason) was a revolution in thought in Europe and North America from the late 17th century to the late 18th century. The Enlightenment involved new approaches in philosophy, science, and politics. Above all, the human capacity for reason was championed as the tool by which our knowledge could be extended, individual liberty maintained, and happiness secured.

In response to those questioning the “value” of grad school & #education at #university :
”As a very grateful honors #student who LOVES learning & as an early admissions earner of multiple scholarships, who worked part time AND earned my masters from amazing #NYU  at a very young age - grateful for every #teacher #educator I’ve ever had the great honor of studying -
I’m cognizant that it was my PASSION & DEDICATION to my own path as an artist- that guided me through education… and while I’m always suggesting to anyone contemplating their own path- it’s your own motivation that determines much (not all) of the experiences we might have as students, as humans being, I do believe that NOW MORE THAN EVER: WE NEED AN #EDUCATED POPULACE … an #Educated #Electorate- to balance out the sheer ignorance perpetrated on our #democracy by the obvious slashing of funds for #authentic education across this nation. In observing & enduring the political conservative insanity, it’s obvious that many of us have clearly lost our minds & hearts & souls to the devilish enabling of craven greed. The only medicine for this toxin is EDUCATION. Any attempt to denigrate the PRICELESS value of a real #LIBERALARTS #EDUCATION  — YES — LIBERAL 🦋🌊🐬🏳️‍🌈🐛🎶🎬🦋 - the denigration & toxic doubt of the inestimable VALUE of the FRUITS OF #TheEnlightenment as FOUNDATION for #civilization - Is folly - as that very seed of doubt is a poison pill, enabling those who wish harm on civilization, people and our dear old Mother Earth. The #enlightenment is our foundation for the #CivilRightsAct … for #WomensRights #Votingrights & #MarriageEquality — ALL under attack by the #InferiorSupremeCourt … a #SupremeCourt so poisoned by its own inferiority complex that it is jealous of the girl who brought her to the dance : #Humanity … and SHE - needs us to stand up for her, lest we pay the tab for our own gluttonous apathy and indifference.”

In the Romantic Russian-language poem, Satan is presented as a tragic anti-hero - a Byronic* hero born from the Romantic characterisation of the devil. That's the big 'R' Romantic of the C18th literary/intellectual/artistic movement, not the little 'r' of love, which, confusingly, is a subject of 'The Demon'... Depictions of the devil, Hirst suggests, are based more so on literature than the Bible (which is arguably also literature, but that's a separate discussion I don't wish to instigate), because so few descriptions of the fallen angel exist in the "good book." In contrast, Dante's 'The Divine Comedy' (1472) and Milton's 'Paradise Lost' (1667) paint vivid monstrous and sublime portraits of the figure, respectively. If you've not read them, they're better than "good books" - they're epic poems 😏. The works of both poets have had such great influence upon following literary representations of the devil, including Lermontov's, that Satan can be seen as the archetypal poetic anti-hero. 🧐: If you need help finding the lecture on YouTube or 'The Devil' to read online, just let me know. *More on Byron another day. 📸: Detail, 'Tamara in the Coffin', Mihály Zichy (c.1880), in the State Lermontov Museum Tarkhany collection. . #darkpoetics #poetry #thedemon #religion #religious #lermontov #russianpoetry #romanticism #theromantics #theenlightenment #history #18thcentury #europeanliterature #europeanhistory #russianpoetry #generallygothic #gothic #books #bookstagram #darkacademia #darkacademiaaesthetic #spookynerd #romanticart #russianart #milton #dante #paradiselost #byron #dantesinferno #thedivinecomedy https://www.instagram.com/p/B-s-C6GA-TT/?igshid=1hfw3dmd99516

Rarely a day goes past without a memory of #PeterBatkin blazing a shower of light through the grinding pain of my daily life; reminding me of the historic impact #eccentrics have on the world. “History is not made by conformists it is made by #eccentrics those daring individuals who not only elevate the social temperature of a room by their presence, they change the world by cutting a line of their own in the way they think live & dress.” Peter entered my life while I was still grieving for my father - a British spy in WWII - & grappling with my diagnosis for a #braintumour We embarked on our own missions through those parts of Mayfair & St James’s relatively unchanged since the 17th & 18th C ⚜️Most people remember Peter as the director of @sothebys but it was his work in the 80s & 90s with MI6 & the KGB in Russia finding & recovering #artcollections missing since WWII & a host of secret missions all highlighting his bravery & commitment to opposing #injustice & #prejudice ⚜️Batkin made history in 1988 by holding the first #artauction in #Russia since the #bolshevikrevolution — The Russian Avant-Garde & Soviet Contemporary Art Auction netted £4 mil - but it was the power of art to unite that motivated Peter ⚜️ His death last year felled me - sucking hope & joy from my life. Peter was a true #eccentric & the world is poorer without him. A man who lived for the arts, #beauty & #pleasure that glorious triumvirate that feuled #theenlightenment - the flame of which Peter & all eccentrics keep alight in our hearts 💜 (at Mayfair) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6G-TMcAYqc/?igshid=17gy0x6q32iby

Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is the foundational document of the United States of America. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, it explains why the Thirteen Colonies decided to separate from Great Britain during the American Revolution (1765-1789). It was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on 4 July 1776, the anniversary of which is celebrated in the US as Independence Day.

Bang Energy Fucking Sucks
Wanted to stay up all night last night so I had a Bang around 11PM. As soon as I drank it, I began to feel tired. I stayed awake for a good hour and then promptly passed out for seven hours without even trying to sleep. I rarely drink caffeine so I know I don't have a tolerance to it.
Tasted okay, but didn't even do what it was intended to do. Complete waste of money.

Born on Halloween day, 1795, Keats was destined for a life of melancholy, cut short by tuberculosis at the age of just 25. Though Keats' name is now synonymous with the English Romantic movement of the long 19th century, during his lifetime he had no association with poets such as William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The larger, European Romantic era spread not only across the continent, but right across the arts (from traditional visual art, through literature, to music) too. It was an intellectual rebellion against the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Enlightenment. It was a rose-tinted backwards glance at Medieval times as an ideal historical moment that celebrated nature in all its sublime beauty, and all its sublime horror. Closely related to gothic literature, emotion and imagination were at Romanticism's core; the movement generated many deep explorations of individual psychology with lasting universal, melancholic appeal. Despite this, during his lifetime, Keats was largely unpublished. It was only in his last 4 years of life that he made his way into print... and he died thinking he had left no legacy. Now considered one of the great English poets, he is widely taught, studied, read, and adored. Today, let us celebrate his life and his truly lasting legacy; 👉 head to stories to see his life mask, photographed at Wentworth Place, his former home in London. . #generallygothic #gothic #gothicliterature #gothicfiction #johnkeats #otd #onthisday #literaryhistory #keats #poet #poetry #romanticism #romanticpoetry #wordsworth #coleridge #wentworthplace #theenlightenment #darkacademia #literarytheory #spookynerd #bookstagram #biography #hardcoverbooks #librarybooks #nonficton #cartography #books #gothicpsyche #odetopsyche #bookquotes https://www.instagram.com/p/B878QgPA6Ej/?igshid=1c3ynyi9fr1f3

“Snatch myself a rich businessman, I guess.” He smiles, looks down bashfully as he imagines the things he could get up to tonight with the handsome dark-haired man in the pretty, grey pinstripe suit. He had a gold watch on his wrist, and a serious look that Yeosang could probably write a very cheesy song about if he wanted.
“Oh yeah?” A voice comes from behind, and Yeosang is slow to turn because he already recognizes it. His cheeks flush. “You’re so sure I’m rich.” Jongho’s eyes are as playful as his smile and Yeosang is glad he didn’t take it the wrong way. He’s not a gold digger, not actually chasing after any money. Love is not something he wants to buy.

24th March 1733, birth of English natural philosopher, pioneer chemist and political theorist Joseph Priestley. Combining Enlightenment rationalism with determinism, Priestly promoted a natural understanding of the world through observation and teaching, in order to promote human progress; advocating toleration and the free and open exchange of ideas. Priestly after meeting with Benjamin Franklin published ‘The ‘History and Present State of Electricity’ in 1767, and after began a series of his own experiments which would lead to the discovery of carbonated water, and "dephlogisticated air", (oxygen). This discovery would also be credited to Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Antoine Lavoisier. Priestly became a member in the 1780’s of the Lunar Society in Birmingham England, a club of prominent figures in the Midlands Enlightenment, including industrialists, natural philosophers and intellectuals, which included Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin), James Watt, inventor of the Watt steam engine in 1776 and Josiah Wedgwood founder of the Wedgwood pottery company. Alongside his scientific discoveries, Priestly also wrote a series of political and religious pamphlets, expressing support for the French Revolution. Decried as a radical by increasing public and government reaction to the French Revolution, Preistly was eventually forced to flee during the reactionary Birmingham riots in 1791, in which his home and laboratory were burnt by a mob. He spent the last ten years of his life in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. 26th March 1814, death of French physician Joseph-Ignace Guillotin. On the 10th October 1789, during the early months of the French Revolution; continued in the comments. #gothichistory #darkhistory #historylesson #darkacademia #regencyera #regencygothic #historicscene #historicscenes #napoleonicwars #18thcenturyhistory #19thcenturyhistory #darkromanticism #historyofscience #historical #sciencehistory #frenchrevolution #benjaminfranklin #lunarsociety #guillotine #louisxvi #historyfacts #theenlightenment #scientificdiscovery #naturalphilosophy #onthisdayinhistory #19thcenturystyle #18thcenturystyle #interesting #interestingfacts #history https://www.instagram.com/p/CM4-cEwHgZB/?igshid=1s9c5uqqq5573
