Dare to Care – Share a Scare Horror book giving phenomenon All Hallows’ Read is brooding on that ominous Halloween horizon. Listen! Isn’t there a voice in the cold, ill wind? It almost sounds like Neil Gaiman giving his all in a hoarse whisper to remind you of his marvelous idea: 
 – Wouldn’t it be awfully nice if people gave each other good scary books along with the Halloween candy, to spread the joys of reading horror? All alone? In the dark? With spider-leg-like chills creeping up the back of your legs? The feeling when you kick back and draw something that has just about exactly the qualities you aspired to be able to pull off when you set out on your artistic journey eons ago.

Got me thinking what it was I wanted to get my pencils to do back then. I think is was something like this. imaginary yet realistic, naturalistic without reference, sketched as if I had the subject in front of me, more 1800 than contemporary.

The BIG question now is why I mostly just do it in my spare time (although I try to pry as much spare time as possible from work). I should be doing bestiaries all day long every day.

Each year I make a booklet for my stall at Malmö Magic Fair. So far there has been an issue on novel uses of your cauldron; on local magic creatures; on the history of the magic fair; on exercises to boost your magic abilities - four educational miniature books. And the magic observatory I curate claims there are far more titles :)

Now the work has begun on my fifth one. It will present six different types of plant creatures. Some more grumpy than others!

So, apparently, unaware it was the eve of the summer solstice, I spent it drawing this hobgoblin charging in his steed of a cauldron. It must have been a midsummer’s waking dream.

It’s that time of year again and I think you all should take some time and celebrate something dear to you, about yourselves.

I honestly don’t know who or what I would be without my imagination. We have had so much fun, so many adventures, have taken on such challenges and have weathered such storms together. I love that about myself. It means the whole world.

I’m quite proud to say it’s the seventh year in a row that I paint and release a cursed book to pester my fellow tumblrererererers about this lovely idea :)

I’ve had so much fun preparing for the digital larp we’re doing next Sunday for members of Blåkullalajv: Bucklornas Buckla! (The Trophy of Trophies). You are more than welcome to join Blåkullalajv, membership cost close to nothing, events are in Swedish though (but I’m sure that won’t stop those really brave) and when the plague isn’t an issue anymore most of what we do takes place in or around Malmö, Sweden. As you can see I’m a living painting (hanging at the magic shool in one of the chatrooms of the quiz walk). Yes it’s very Harry Potter inspired :)

Some photos from the miniworkshop I attended trying my hands at sculpting using styrofoam and jesmonite — a coating that felt like a mix of acrylic paint and plaster. I learned a lot!

Even though we worked two long days I had to scrap my plans for the jaw and the horns. I’ll get a round to that eventually but now I’m really keen on giving it some color. But there’s no time for that yet.

Just wanted to check in and say I am still here working on my undisclosed project. It has taken a lot of my focus so terribly little have been posted this spring. I’m sorry!

Since the start in January it has grown in a way I was not expecting. Yes, I set out to work with more detailed and complex pictures than I usually do but then it kind of had to have text too, and that led to research on a whole new scale. Writing is not my usual creative outlet so it’s quite uncharted waters and slow going.

Today I spent some time researching and writing up in a beautiful old willow tree with its’s huge branches reaching out over a pond.

Come the end of June my six month of part time leave from work is over. I bugs me I won’t have finished the project in that time but one of my main goals were to let this grow as it pleased. Eventually I will show it.

Emily Hare is running an art promt based on creatures in her fantastic world, Stangehollow. It’s part of the final stretch before the launch of the Kickstarter for her second Strangehollow book and I can’t wait to see it!

Emily paints beautiful, quite colorful watercolors with a fine eye for details and humor, although you never feel totally safe in the company of her creatures.

Her painting of a mountain unicorn is one of my favorites. I really wanted to do more of an homage but in the end had to make a really quick pic of this unicorn foal high above the Strangehollow forest.

It’s been ages since I made any Brain Scoop fan art... and technically this isn’t either... BUT Emily Graslie is finally going long format with a three part TV-series on PBS called Prehistoric Road Trip. It airs Wednesday June 17th at 9 pm US central time and I’ve been looking at way more preview clips than I thought I would find and I think it has a lot of that special Brain Scoop vibe. Apart from Emily goofing around and being scientific at the same time and meeting tons of experts it has music and high quality and fun graphics of the same sort. I’ve been waiting for this since November 2018 and I’m soooo looking forward to catch it as it premieres (here). The only catch is it’s 4 am mid work week here in Sweden. I gonna be so tired Thursday :S X) 8D
