Alright I've been waiting for this, get ready for a really long lore dump... (click on keep reading so I don't clutter up the tags)

Future AU takes place 200 years after when-ever the main events of the game are. This would make Shadow 215 years old and Sonic 216 years old. Sonic: Sonic was created by a cult of former ARK scientists who wanted to create a version of Shadow specifically to be a weapon and without the Black Arms DNA. They used the DNA of a god and were successful (obviously.) However, Sonic at one point lost control of his power and destroyed everything, this event made him lose his memory. The first thing he saw when he woke up was the nature around him, creating his free-spirited nature (contrast to how Shadow woke up seeing Maria for the first time.) All this lore is here to explain why Sonic is immortal. However because Sonic is immortal and the public is unaware of this, and basically the gods have their own secret cult that gave Sonic an ultimatum. Basically he could A) Die at around 40 but keep his freedom, however the earth he loves may one day be destroyed due to the lack of him protecting it. B) He lives long enough (around 110) for people to realize he is immortal like Shadow, and not wanting to waste their best protector against the planet, seals him away, freezing him and only take him out when they need him to save them, or C) fake his death and continuing living, but lose his humanity, never being able to be “Sonic the Hedgehog” again. Sonic also never made this choice, as Shadow was the one who decided. Shadow feels guilt over this even if Sonic has gotten over it at this point.

Sonic goes through a major depression in the years 110-150, as he basically loses his identity and is struggling with that. Sonic eventually finds some old outfit Shadow has in the closet, and uses it to become a masked figure called “S.” He now saves people under S, his speed being from “technology” and a voice modulator hiding his voice. Sonic is insanely powerful in the future, so people start equating him to a “legendary hero” who only appears when a threat too strong shows up. (like how Silver acted when talking about Whisper in IDW #8.)

Sonic still has a lot of his immature traits personality wise, however he is a lot smarter when it comes to combat, having experience in situations, as well as being extremely overpowered.

Shadow: Due to Shadow being the ultimate lifeform, he’s allowed to still be in public and shows his face. Shadow leaves G.U.N after Rouge retires, as Team Dark disbands. Once Rouge dies, Shadow spends a lot of time with Sonic, as Sonic is going through it being dead in all but name.

Around 130-140, Shadow created “Maria’s Solutions,” his own private organization for helping people. Shadow is someone people go to when people can’t go to police or other organizations for help. He accepts help from almost any client, however he is often avoided by the worst as his power is terrifying. Shadow is now a detective, negotiator, and bounty hunter all in one, as he is more knowledgeable and collected now.

After Eggman's death, Shadow adopted Sage at his request, not having it in him to bring her offline. Sage has a duplicate robot body but she prefers to spend time with him on Shadow's phone. She helps him out in missions, with hacking and tech related problems.

Shadow has other employees for Maria’s Solutions, however I’m still working on them. Main ideas include an innocent girl similar to Maria he’s taken a soft spot to, a robot like Omega who works as a maid around their house, etc.

Silver: Silver will occasionally come back to check in on Shadow. Due to the deal they made, Silver can’t know Sonic is alive. However, due to a mishap, Silver finds out and becomes friends with S. Sonic likes spending more time with Silver so he hides this fact from Shadow, sometimes going on missions with Silver.

Other info

Sonic and Shadow aren’t important to this world. Lots of organizations and people fight in this world, thus leaving Sonic to deal with world ending threats and Shadow his clients. Organizations include

Technology conglomerates

A church that worships Gaia

The restoration

Militaries

Sonic and Shadow are married with rings pierced in their ears, however they do not like to define relationships.

Anyone who Shadow trusts enough will meet Sonic by accident, but calls him “S” either way.

Knuckles can be spoken too by connecting with the master emerald, which is underneath Sonic and Shadow’s house in an underground facility.

Tails reincarnates when he dies with an extra tail, however he gets his memories from his last 100 years only if he meets Sonic. They don’t meet until 130ish, where Sonic agrees to wait until Tails is 20 every time before he hunts for him. (this part I’m still working on.)

Sonic is a jack of all trades who can use any weapon to fight as he likes to switch it up. Shadow uses a gun and sword combo along with his chaos abilities.

AU is more comedic despite the somber tone, as Sonic and Shadow are still Sonic and Shadow at the end of the day.

A Guide to My AU ("Evay AU")

Hello! I make art for anything and everything I love, but if you follow me you'll find that a large amount of my content is centered around my own Sonic AU. I thought I'd make a handy little guide for those of you who are new and just learning about my AU or for those of you who have been following me but might want a refresher.

★This guide is a living document that will be continuously amended as I make changes and additions to my stories. ★

OVERALL PREMISE

My AU centers around Sonic & Friends through adulthood as they navigate relationships, careers, marriage and family. The primary genres are "slice of life" and "romantic comedy" with some action/drama interspersed throughout. My AU mostly follows the video game canon and the IDW canon with some elements from Sonic Boom and Sonic X tossed in and then I created my own characters and stories to fill in the gaps. My AU DOES NOT include the Sonic Cinematic Universe, Archie comics/characters, Fleetway comics/characters, Sonic Prime, SatAM, the OVA, Sonic Underground, the 1992 Manga, etc.

SPECIAL NOTES

In my AU, I depict "Classic" versions of the Sonic cast as their younger selves with their "Modern/Boom" versions being older.

Although my canon does not include Archie/SatAM, I do refer to Sonic characters' classification as "Mobians" and the planet they are on is referred to as Earth/Mobius interchangeably. I credit this as simply "cultural variation" between humans and Sonic characters but they all originate from the same planet.

MOST IMPORTANTLY please remember this is a fanmade AU. Nothing I say, write or draw influences the Sonic franchise or canon in any way. I'm just here to have fun and I hope you enjoy the ride!

KEY

For the timeline below, Canon Sonic characters will be highlighted in blue and my original characters will be highlighted in pink.

If there is a comic or written fic that corresponds with an element of the timeline, I will include it as a hyperlink.

ABRIDGED TIMELINE

Project Shadow is created and suspended.

Domino and Phlox meet. Sonic is conceived.

Domino raises Sonic to approx. toddler age until she loses her life in a flash flood. Sonic is left alone to fend for himself and eventually represses his memories of Domino to cope with the trauma.

Clay Rose and Lulu Petula meet. Together, they have Amy and she lives with her parents until her fortune cards lead her to meeting Sonic.

Majority of the game/IDW canon takes place.

CC (originally labeled as "Code Compiler") is a spherical/ovoid robot created (August 26) by an independent inventor (no relation to the Robotniks) to assist with production. CC's intelligence rapidly evolves and she gains sentience much to her creator's dismay. After a struggle, the inventor powers her off and the workshop falls into disrepair. The building is marked condemned and CC's chassis remains hidden within the rubble.

Sonic and Phlox run into each other on several occasions. Neither realize they are related.

Amy begins her pursuit of archaeological studies.

A mystery woman going by the name "Light" (who is secretly Aurora from the future) appears and warns Sonic & Team of an oncoming threat that is hellbent on killing Shadow before wreaking havoc on the planet. Light claims she was sent here with the task of protecting Shadow but is not forthcoming with any other information about herself or her 'previous team'. Light & the Team work together to fight off 'the threat' and along the way Shadow develops a romantic interest in Light who also has strong feelings and an allegiance to him for reasons he does not know. Upon defeating the villain, Light must return to where she came from. Shadow tries to discourage her and even asks to accompany her, but she insists that if she stays any longer, she risks causing catastrophic damage. She departs and Shadow vows to find her again.

Rouge and Omega join Shadow in his search to find Light. After combing the globe with no luck, their quest takes them off-world and they go on an interplanetary journey. The three become mercenaries to fund their space expedition.

Knuckles bulks up! His goal of spending time away from Angel Island did him some good!

Sonic and Amy begin a romantic relationship.

Sonic moves in with Amy.

Tails establishes Yellow Sky Industries, a company where he can begin sharing his gadgetry with the world as well as partner up with other innovators to put their genius to good use.

Stone establishes The Mean Bean coffee shop. Much to his delight, Eggman frequents this cafe but is unaware of Stone's affection.

Sonic and Amy get engaged. Upon hearing the news and growing homesick, Rouge and Omega return home, leaving Shadow to continue his journey on his own. While attending the wedding festivities, Knuckles and Rouge rekindle their budding romance.

During one of Eggman's many failed attempts at world domination, he falls victim to a near-fatal accident of his own making. Sonic rescues him, but Eggman loses his right hand in the process. Eggman is forced to reconsider his health and kickstarts some moral dilemmas for him. His attempts at world domination begin to dwindle.

Cream departs home to pursue humanitarian/Mobianitarian(?) efforts

Rouge uses her mercenary wealth to develop her own mining and jewelry business (she does not give up thievery). Knuckles is initially hired on as head excavator, but this job is only temporary until he secures enough money to fund a dream project of his.

With his own money and with the support of Yellow Sky Industries and his friends' investments, Knuckles develops the Young Heroes Program - a nonprofit youth organization. He works full time as a trainer at the program to help empower kids and strengthen the community. Sonic assists YH as needed, but is not a full-time volunteer.

Sonic and Amy decide to start a family. Aurora is conceived.

Rouge and Knuckles get married.

In one last ditch effort to regain Sonic's attention and to encourage Sage to follow in her father's footsteps**(See note), Eggman kidnaps Amy. This triggers her to go into labor early and Aurora is born (March 13). This is the nail in the coffin as far as Eggman's villainous efforts go and he makes an unspoken agreement with Sonic to 'retire' from villainy. He still plans to regularly annoy them by inserting himself into their lives. (**Note: This comic was made before Sage was introduced to the game canon. In retrospect, Sage would have been a part of this story and part of the reason Eggman decided to kidnap Amy, no matter how much Sage discouraged him. Sage instantly bonds with Aurora and vows to be her lifelong friend.)

Amy takes on a second job as an interior designer to support her family while Sonic becomes a stay-at-home dad and focuses most of his time and attention on raising Aurora.

Once Aurora is old enough, she begins attending the YH program. This is the closest Sonic will allow her to participating in any adventures.

Ruff Hyena is born (January 29).

As a defense mechanism against constant bullying from her peers, Aurora’s light powers begin to manifest.

In addition to attending the Young Heroes Program, Aurora begins a mentorship with her Uncle Tails for optics/physics lessons in order to better understand her powers.

Eggman and Stone begin dating.

Aurora begins to experience premonitions in the form of dreams. Amy does her best to help Aurora hone this skill, but without much success.

Tumble Hyena is born (January 30). Ruff and Tumble are abandoned and left to fend on their own before ending up in the foster care system. They remain there for many years.

Aurora develops a crush on a boy named Kyle and they go on a few “playdates”. Aurora invites Kyle over to the house to meet her parents and Sonic does not handle it well. After an argument, Aurora and Kyle agree to not hang out together anymore.

Knuckles and Rouge adopt Ruff and Tumble.

Aurora ages out of the Young Heroes Program. Sonic discourages her from venturing out on her own and convinces her to work for YH instead.

After receiving a heartfelt message from Rouge, Shadow resigns from his quest and returns to Earth. He decides his new mission will be to get to better know the world Maria had always spoken so highly about.

Feeling “stuck” in her life, Aurora broaches the topic of moving out to be on her own. Sonic talks her out of it.

While reconnecting with The Team, Shadow is introduced to Aurora. He instantly recognizes her as the woman he’s spent the last several decades looking for, but doesn’t understand how that’s possible and she is adamant they have never met before. While telling Sonic and Amy of his world travel plans, Aurora offers to be his guide around town as she knows every inch of it. Shadow takes her up on her offer and the two quickly develop a friendship.

Shadow decides it doesn’t matter if Aurora is the Light he formerly met or not. He asks her on a date. Remembering how badly things went the last time one of Aurora’s “boyfriends” and Sonic interacted, she accepts Shadow’s courtship but only if they can keep it a secret for now. Shadow is wary of this, but agrees to her terms.

Keeping secrets from her parents begins to take a toll on Aurora, to the point she is getting sick. She tells Shadow she can’t keep lying to her family, so she tells him they shouldn’t see each other anymore. In hopes to “fix” the situation, Shadow meets with Sonic and Amy to ask their permission to date Aurora. This immediately escalates into a battle between Sonic and Shadow. Aurora intercepts the fight and, heartbroken, she tells Sonic that as much as she wants his blessing, she doesn’t need it, and is going to continue to date Shadow. Sonic, Amy and Aurora have a heart-to-heart to try and reconcile things, but Sonic makes it clear that though Aurora is a grown up and can technically date whoever she wants, she has to follow certain rules while she’s still living in their house.

Tails purchases an abandoned factory to expand Yellow Sky Industries. There, he finds the deactivated CC. He powers her on but she is severely traumatized and significantly damaged. He repairs her and after understanding how advanced her intelligence is, he offers her a job as his lab assistant.

CC quickly develops romantic feelings for Tails.

Knuckles, Rouge, Ruff and Tumble legally change their last names to “Motley”

In her pursuit to become “Mobian,” CC fabricates herself a Mobian-like body.

As Shadow and Aurora’s relationship progresses, they begin to explore more of the world together.

Tails and CC host a charity banquet. Things go awry.

Aurora gets her first apartment. She also begins a singing career.

Tails and CC officially begin a romantic relationship.

Aurora begins to have recurring premonitions about Shadow being in danger. She puts her musical tour on pause to stay vigilant.

A dangerous, mysterious entity appears and attacks The Team, severely wounding several members and nearly killing Shadow. Before the threat can be defeated, it retreats by escaping via time travel where it plans to successfully kill Shadow. With most of The Team out of commission or fearful of altering the timeline, Aurora travels back in time to save Past Shadow and the rest of her family. To protect her identity, she goes by the name “Light.”

Sonic and Shadow reconcile their differences. Sonic becomes noticeably more accepting of Shadow and Aurora’s relationship.

Shadow and Aurora get engaged and move in together.

Aurora continues her musical career.

Shadow and Aurora get married.

Ruff ages out of the Young Heroes Program and in the hopes to follow in Knuckles’ footsteps, he becomes a crime fighter. When Tumble isn’t helping his brother fight crime, he’s working on his own mechs.

Eggman and Stone digitally uploadt heir consciousness to Cyberspace so they can live indefinitely.

Shadow and Aurora decide to start a family. They have their first litter of triplets: Piper, Zane and Nova (November 12).

Shadow and Aurora have a second litter of twins: Aster and Blitz (April 8). At this time, Shadow uses the wealth he’s amassed to construct a large house that can accommodate their growing family.

Shadow and Aurora have a third litter of triplets: Cinder, Diamond and Boon (February 18).

Sonic and Amy return to a life of world traveling.

In addition to attending the Young Heroes Program, Shadow trains all of his children in how to best use their powers for the greater good of the planet.

During a fight, Cinder critically wounds Diamond with his “Stellar Tantrum” power. Boon uses his powers of healing to restore Diamond to full health without any scarring, but Cinder never forgives himself. He becomes withdrawn and distances himself from his family members from this point on.

Hello, I've been a fan of your yandere ramblings, especially the sonic ones since no one does those really on this.

So I came with my own little ramblings for a human y/n that gets sucked into mobias (basically a reverse sonic X)

First of all, y/n is always staying at someone's house in a rotation (from cream and vanilla to tails to Amy, etc), and isn't allowed to sleep on their own without some mobian cuddling them.

Also y/n pulls a generations and meets different eras of the sonic cast, first meeting classic sonic, tails, knuckles, Amy, robotnik and metal sonic. And robotnik just being intrigued by this other human, and has metal kidnap them (who grows obsessed, yandere robot go brr).

And after a lot of classic obsession and shenanigans, y/n is transported to the mid modern era (sonic adventure and advanced series), and meets new characters like cream, big and chaos.

Cream is the only normal one (still is clingy), and tails is slightly more obsessive (still normal tho), and chaos just plays hot potato of constantly nabbing y/n during adventure 1.

Then onto generations itself and the time monster decides to also nab y/n because Eggman told them to (definitely not because it finds this human adorable).

Also fleetway sonic and scourge being the clingiest and jealous hedgehogs ever.

Omega also likes to just hold y/n randomly, like he does with cream and cheese in the comics

(tails and cream and chao's are strictly platonic yanderes for any yandere sonic stuff I do and may add to the platonic only if needed)

I do imagine they have their are scared as all hell but for classic sonic I do imagine he is shorter kinda how it is in other modern games and just imagining y/n in changing styles everytime they are put into a new sonic generation just to fit into the era. And is the classic era kinda wearing something like eggmans fit but modified to be their own and kinda fitting the hero style but they do try to take their gloves off but it's a struggle. And just imagining classic knuckles keeping y/n near the master emerald as that way he can protect two things at once. Tails is kinda like a that little brother who always wants to show you stuff even if your already doing something. Like tails will come to y/n and holds up his newest invention and y/n is like "oh cool. But tails I'm really busy right now t-" and tails is like "hold on let me show you want it does" and ends up destroying the only portal way home for y/n.

I do imagine just y/n at classic Amy's place and is just like "I wonder if I can make a run for it to see what would happen." But mostly just waiting for the right moment to run like when classic eggman and sonic were fighting and ended up tripping into a open portal somehow and now are in the mid modern era and I like to think their outfits changes to corespondents with the sonic era they are in. And imagining with some cross over games may or may not become obsessed with y/n like the sonic characters are and it's hell for y/n cause like bro has to deal with this now.

Plus imagining omega just being a kinda bodyguard for y/n is nice. They don't know omega is obsessed to buy keeps it more professional and so is shadow because he grows more insistent that he go everywhere with y/n to keep them safe even if not endanger, he still goes just to be sure nothing happens and then rouge is like "oh the master emerald and y/n! What a package deal!" and steals both but if she cannot get the emerald, she goes for the better option and y/n having to cling into rouge because like they do not wanna fall from how high she flys cause like bro you wouldn't be scared just looking down to see how far from the ground you are from?

Plus imagining y/n having a bunch of chao's walking behind y/n like ducklings because I say so and y/n wanting to take one because it decided to sleep on y/n's lap but they can't take them out of the chao garden. I love chao's they are so silly.

Also metal sonic after he sees y/n standing minding their own business:

Metal sonic and y/n are bascially that scene with miles running away and Miguel chasing him. And imagining that metal sonic dragging y/n back to eggmans base by the ankle because like I know if metal sonic held hands with y/n, he ain't never letting go of y/n's hand

(that's it's for my yapping for rn, but anyways if you guys like this y/n or idea please don't feel shy and request your ideas or y/n ideas. But for now please stay safe and drink water!)

The Future Team Dark is here!

Team Dark during a moment of my AU - TheSonicFutureAU.

I finally managed to finish them. I confess that although Omega didn’t have many changes, I needed to draw him to complete the whole team, and here it is!

Here are some things about them in my AU:

After a great universal conflict against Dr. Eggman, Sonic and his friends joined forces with the Resistance to defeat the evil genius once and for all. With Sonic's victory, Eggman mysteriously disappeared along with his allies, leaving behind widespread destruction around the world.

With the mysterious disappearance of the villain, Team Dark is recruited by G.U.N to track down Dr. Eggman's whereabouts and gather data from his bases, deactivating all of them and eliminating any remaining threatening technology.

During these events, Shadow encounters a Dark Chao destroying Badniks that were still active on its own. They end up working together to leave the base and find the rest of the team.

Despite being small, the chaotic Dark Chao begins to follow them and becomes a new member of the team, being nicknamed Kuro by Shadow.

At the end of the mission, Rouge convinces Shadow and Omega to join as secret agents and intermediaries for G.U.N., since they would now have recurring missions to investigate all the technology used by Eggman and help with the security of humanity when needed.

5 years later:

Rouge and Knuckles are now together. In addition to being the owner of a famous jewelry store in the center of Station Square, she also works as a business decoy for T.H.A – a group of professionals who search for treasures and artifacts for research purposes, created by Knuckles. Although she is a very busy entrepreneur, Rouge secretly maintains her work as a secret agent for the President and for G.U.N. occasionally.

Shadow continued working as a G.U.N. Special Agent, investing his rewards into the creation of the MARIA Institute, with the goal of helping children with chronic or severe illnesses make their greatest dreams come true, with Cream being the primary person responsible for helping manage the institution.

Omega, just like Kuro, stayed with Shadow throughout all these years, both also working as Special Agents. (The two share a chaotic love for destroying robots and finishing off what remains of Eggman.)

When they weren’t working, Shadow enjoyed spending most of his time doing simple tasks. Shopping, reading books, tidying up his apartment, helping some acquaintances when they needed it, or even visiting the Institute and other charitable organizations.

With the return of Sonic and Amy, Rouge and Knuckles decided to go ahead with their wedding, now that all their friends could be present at the celebration.

2 years later:

Rouge finds out she’s pregnant.

At first, she feels hesitant to tell Knuckles, as the idea of becoming a mother had never crossed her mind. A pregnancy between species is highly risky for both the child and the mother, which made her even more nervous about what Knuckles would think.

Rouge tried to hide it, but Amy and Cream soon found out. Both of them talked to her to calm her down and told her that Knuckles deserved to know, reassuring her that he would not only be happy with the news but would also support her no matter what decision she made.

When she revealed it to Knuckles, she was surprised by his contagious happiness. Knuckles promised Rouge that if she was comfortable with the idea of them becoming parents, he would do everything to protect her and the child at all costs, and would give all the love she deserved. Upon hearing this response, Rouge felt much less tense and allowed herself to be more positive about the idea of becoming a mother, feeling very happy that Knuckles was willing to take a new step in their lives.

Knuckles and Rouge have a child - Jade Jasper.

4 years later:

The Incident of the End of the World begins. A familiar figure takes control of Eggman's lost technologies, leading a global army to destroy the Earth and all who inhabit it.

During this event, Shadow encounters a father being attacked and cornered with a baby in his arms. He protects him from the robots, but the father explains that he is too weak to resist any longer. Even though Shadow tries to find other ways to help him, he eventually gives in to the man’s last request. The father hands the child to Shadow and begs him to protect and care for her. Shadow takes the child.

Despite struggling a lot during these events, Shadow eventually forms a protective bond with the baby and ends up adopting her as his daughter, Aura the Porcupine.

About the Designs:

Shadow no longer grows, so he chooses to wear his Air Shoes with slightly higher heels.

Rouge only wears this outfit during missions and at T.H.A; at her jewelry store, she wears a different outfit that is less revealing of her secret profession.

Omega painted the symbol that Shadow frequently uses in his honor.

Kuro is a mix of the original DARK CHAO design and the SHADOW CHAO design.

Conclusion…

And for now, that's it! I hope to bring more about them in the future :)

ppl do human designs of the sonic characters but do you ever wonder what omega would look like. would he look the same, the same but resized to fit alongside human rouge and shadow's heights, or would he have a different design altogether. ive been thinking about this for some time and i know ur robotpilled

human versions of sonic robots is honestly just not something i’ve ever given much thought to, mostly because it just doesn’t click in my mind. with most of those characters, their robotic nature is essential to who they are. if you make them human, you might as well just make a different character. i always figured that in these human AUs, the robots are still robots and omega just kinda looks the same lol. maybe taller

the closest I’ve gotten to a human omega design is a mobian-badnik hybrid AU version of him in dance in fire - he’s half magpie. this is literally just a photo from the zine rn because i can’t access the pdf LOL

i really like this design but just . haven’t drawn it again LOL

Thinking about how shadow loses the 2 people closest to him and almost gives up his life in adventure 2 to save people he doesn't actually know.

Thinking about how in his next appearance, even though he doesn't remember anything and thinks he could be an android, he finds Rouge and Omega, 2 people with goals similar to his own and immediately helps them. And then he never leaves them again. They're right there in his own game, trying to help him and also get his help. They show up at the end, and then never leaves his side. Even when things look bleak in Sonic 06's future, they stay by his side. Omega waits 200 years to help him fight Mephiles then admits to Shadow that he's the one who captures him when the world crumbles. Rouge tells Shadow that even when the world turns on him, she'll fight on his side no matter what. And they stay by his side to fight mephiles, to try to stop that future.

Thinking about how in every game Shadow is in from then on, Omega and Rouge are there too.

Thinking about how Omega, a robot made by eggman, wanted to overthrow his creator and start a robot uprising and rule over all humans, but abandoned that to stay at Shadow's side instead.

Thinking about how he saves Rouge from prison island even though he doesn't know her because he thinks about how he couldn't save Maria, and decides if he has a chance to save someone, he has to take it. And she stays by Shadow's side while staying a treasure hunter and a GUN agent.

Thinking about how Shadow joins GUN, the people responsible for Maria's death and Gerald's insanity. All they had to do was recognize shadow was not at fault and give him a chance, and he takes it. He joins Rouge as an agent and brings Omega with him.

Thinking about how they banter in game. How Rouge is playful with him, how Omega is straightforward. Maybe when Rouge smiles, maybe when Omega recites facts, Shadow sees the ghosts of Maria and Gerald.

Thinking about how even though Shadow lost everything, he still found new friends. They don't ever leave his side. And he never leaves theirs.

You know what? I’m yapping about my own roleswap AU. It’s called Liberation. I got some chapters on Ao3. I might draw some of it, but I suck at drawing lmao

As a prelude, this is who’s who: Sonic - Shadow, Tails - Maria, Amy - Rouge, Knuckles - Omega, Abraham - Gerald/Topaz, Eggman/Aleena - Black Doom (also Silver - Blaze, Chaotix - Vanilla’s family unit, Metal Sonic - Biolizard, but I didn’t talk about them here)

Abraham Tower - G.U.N. Commander. Lives and works on the ARK, a military base that protects Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Abraham was the one who decided to recruit aliens they found. He later became the only one who defended Tails and Sonic. He was called down to Earth to meet with G.U.N.’s council, but he was instead trapped. They tortured him and eventually executed him, erasing almost all proof of his existence except for a few records Topaz preserved

Tails - A two-tailed kit was found on a broken spaceship, floating aimlessly through space. Abraham thought he was harmless enough to interrogate, but the kit proved his intelligence. Abraham brought him in as Project Tails, but still learning human languages, the kit thought Tails was his name. It stuck. Tails made the Eclipse Cannon to help protect Earth. When the ARK was raided in Abraham’s absence, Tails pushed Sonic into an escape pod and stayed behind, getting shot in the process. Tails died the day of the raid

Sonic - The military personnel on the ARK discovered a strange sound frequency coming from an astroid. They brought it onboard and found Project Sonic. Tails, still confused, called the alien Sonic, and that, too, stuck. Sonic was Earth’s main protector, but this took a toll on him. He didn’t talk around anyone except Tails and Abraham (he generally doesn’t talk to any humans except a select few). He also, as IRL hedgehogs do, self-mutilated by biting his arms. Abraham got him a set of bracers before he left for Earth. Because of his immense power, G.U.N.’s council wanted him executed, and the raid was meant to kill Sonic. It killed nearly everyone but him. When he awakened fifty years later after the raid on Prison Island, he was found by Black Doom who showed him a video where Abraham told him to complete Operation Liberation, a plan Abraham made to protect Tails and Sonic from the council where they would destroy a planet for Earth to mine/colonize (and letting Tails and Sonic live on that planet instead of the ARK). Driven by Tails’ last words (or what Sonic remembered of it) and Abraham’s video, Sonic decided to destroy Earth

Shadow - A seemingly regular Mobian on Earth who stumbled upon a sickly Maria one day. The two became quick friends, and Shadow was later adopted into the Robotnik family. He takes care of Maria and Gerald, and since Maria puts herself in danger a lot, Shadow has unintentionally saved the planet more than a few times

Maria Robotnik - An extremely smart but sickly teenage girl. She has to wear a metal exoskeleton that lowers the gravity on her body. She can also use it to fly and pseudo telekinesis. Her main area of scientific expertise is bio-robotics

Gerald Robotnik - A kid born on the ARK and one of the few survivors. Since he saw G.U.N.’s corruption firsthand, he decided to become a scientist within G.U.N. to reform it. He lives with his granddaughter, Maria, and his pseudo-adopted grandson, Shadow

Amy Rose - A private investigator who was contracted by G.U.N. to join Sonic and Black Doom, relaying information to G.U.N. and (upon Topaz’s request) convince Sonic not to destroy the planet. She has her hammer, but she can also use her tarot cards as a weapon. Additionally, her mastery over chaos energy helps her know details about the past and future (for chaos is timeless)

Rouge - Honestly, just a regular bat lmao. She became friends with Shadow and Maria, and helps them save the world from time to time

Knuckles - A former slave of Black Doom after his tribe was killed by the Black Arms. He broke free from the mind control and instantly rebelled. While he does have the goal of destroying Black Doom, he also wants to collect relics of his tribe

Omega - One of the many races Black Doom destroyed were the Badniks. Omega is the last among them. He protects the Phantom Ruby as its guardian. He also hates Black Doom and wants to destroy him

Topaz - Abraham’s apprentice. She was left behind on Earth when he went to the ARK. Per his final wishes, she convinced the council to imprison Sonic instead of executing him. She also became the commander after him

Black Doom - An alien warlord who needs to conquer Earth because it’s filled with untapped chaos energy that will really help Black Doom destroy all his enemies

Aleena - On Mobius the planet, Aleena rallied the scattered tribes together to create a unified kingdom. It was foretold that she would have twins, but instead, three babies were born. The third was revealed to be a connection to Gaia. Aleena’s scryers told her that she needed to abandon her children to save them. Sonia and Manic went to their canon places, but Sonic was lost to space in an asteroid. When Aleena found Sonia and Manic again, she decided to spread her kingdom to all corners of the universe. She wanted to retrieve all Mobians from Earth, even forcibly kidnapping them if that’s what it took, not only to expand her army but also because she believed Mobians were the pinnacle of evolution

The post where I do vague cultural worldbuilding headcanons for Sonic characters??

Sonic and Knuckles are mountain man bros in the sense that they both grew up in the wild raised by animals. They dunk themselves in a river, call themselves clean, and then fistbump about it. They eat fruit right off bushes. Knuckles can find you a damn good tuber in a pinch and Sonic would be able to snatch you a worm if you really wanted it. Knuckles finds it difficult to pick up on mainstream cultural customs but Sonic's always found it easy now that he's older.

Tails and Amy, meanwhile, grew up in towns. These towns had a definite human influence, hence their possession of first and last names, but they still grew up in a Mobian in-group of sorts. They know proper fur/quill care, feel that it's gender non-conforming for a boy to wear clothes and a girl to go without them, and are adept at reading ear/tail gestures. Tails was never really one for any small-town slang but Amy still uses more rural phrasing even now that she lives in a larger city.

Rouge grew up in a large city, so she's more well-versed in cultures other than her own. She's adopted some human rituals because she thinks they're fun, like face masks and shaving some of her body fur. She loves exploring human cuisines because they're "exotic" to her while Mobian cuisine are comfort foods. She's fluent in several different kinds of slang along with the gestures/manners of the different cultures.

Shadow was raised by humans. His mannerisms are unmistakably human. From wearing human-sized shirts around the house, to having a taste for "human" comfort foods, to being completely unable to read ear/tail gestures in conversation, any Mobian is able to peg him as an outsider pretty quickly. While he's absolutely embraced proper quill care, Rouge had to first point out to him that he was doing it wrong- using human shampoo is not going to cut it, hun.

Omega is. . . weird. For the most part, he's predictably alien: what few social customs he's bothered to learn he has to have observed first. Rouge has been a helpful educator on the rare occasion he gives a shit, usually in regards to slang translation to add to his dictionary. He's almost more like Knuckles in the sense that he was isolated and now he's playing catchup. Sometimes, sometimes, though, the assumptions Omega makes will lean more towards human biases. Anyone who values their life knows not to ever point that out to him.

Metal Sonic reads like a robot imitating a human imitating a Mobian. Yes, he can imitate Sonic's gestures, but it's the movement in between that's uncanny. The physicality of his limbs. The weight of each step in his out-of-combat walk cycle. It screams "human". Most of his cultural knowledge, the little that he has, comes from observing Eggman's daily routine. But Eggman is just one human, and an isolated and eccentric one at that. Metal Sonic could recognize a refrigerator but not a washing machine, could recognize a plate and fork but not any other kitchen cookware. His knowledge is piecemeal. His imitations are incomplete. He was designed for combat, nothing more. His unconscious attempts to fill in the gaps are illogical, aren't they?

Silver is permanently locked into a culture called "survival mode". That's a joke, but only mostly. His behaviors more closely match that of someone growing up in extreme poverty. He can't stand to throw stuff away and he has a hypervigilance about danger that someone who grew up in a "bad neighborhood" would understand. Not to mention that any cultural values he has learned are a few hundred years out of date, so his guesses at any customs tend to be slightly off.

Blaze is from a different dimension, which basically reads as just a different culture than the one that's prominent where most of Sonic's friends reside! She actually gets a kick out of sharing her customs and comparing them to everyone else's. She's also from an extremely privileged walk of life, though, and it definitely shows no matter how much research she does to try and be less ignorant about how "normal" life works.

Team Heroes races off to Rail Canyon to put a stop to the mad doctor's evil schemes. It's a race to the finish, but what lies at the end is a sight no one could have expected...

“Alright gang! Time to spoil that rotten egg!”

“Yeah!”

“Let’s go!”

Team Heroes descended upon the winding rails from the canyon cliffs above, the Hero of Mobius taking the lead. With his human friend safe at home, he felt like he could really let loose for a change, not needing to hold back his powers for her sake. He smiled, allowing the wind brushing against his quills to wash away any lingering worry or strif-

WHAM!

“GAH!!!”

Tails jolted, “SONIC, ARE YOU OKAY!!?”

The hedgehog did a flip as he flew forward, recovering his stance as he continued his path along the yellow grind rail. He looked back ahead of him only to find an ebony figure recovering his stance as well.

“Shadow!?”

The young hedgehog, still not fully awake or restored to his former power, glared down his older counterpart behind him, “Hmph! Get out of my way, hedgehog!”

Sonic growled, “I could say the same to you! Watch where you land next time!”

Omega appeared on the rail beside him, Tiny safely tucked in one of his storage compartments, “SHADOW. IS. ONLY. A. TINY. CREATURE. GO. EASY. ON. HIM. SONIC.”

“I AM NOT JUST A ‘TINY CREATURE’!!!”

“Says you!” The thieving bat approached on Sonic’s left, “You haven’t even fully recovered from waking up and then Pinkie over here gives you a concussion!”

“I SAID I WAS SORRY, OKAY!!?” The hedgehog in question appeared with her team from behind, “I DIDN’T KNOW WE COULD TRUST HIM!!”

Shadow winced slightly before looking back ahead with a huff, “Well, you can certainly trust that I’m okay. Now let me focus on the task at hand.”

Sonic smiled smugly, “My Shadow, quite the faker we have here, huh?”

The younger hedgehog began fuming, “LOOK WHO’S TALKING!!! YOU KEEP AVOIDING YOUR PROBLEMS AND YOU CALL ME A FAKE!!?”

Sonic began fuming as well, “WHAT WAS THAT!!?”

Tails and Rouge sighed, “Oh boy…”

“YOU HEARD ME!!!”

“SAY IT AGAIN, I DARE YOU!!!”

Shadow slowed his pace until his hands met the Blue Blur’s in challenge, both of them growling, “FINE!!! YOU’RE A FAKE!!! IN FACT, YOU AREN’T EVEN GOOD ENOUGH TO BE MY FAKE!!!”

“I’LL MAKE YOU EAT THOSE WORDS!!!”

The two pushed off of each other, Shadow grinning in playful challenge, “How about a race then? The first to make it to Eggman’s base is the winner!”

Sonic grinned as well, “Heh! Didn’t take you for the rival type! Alright! Bring it on!”

SHOOOM!

Everyone else continued along their path in exasperated disbelief.

Those idiots…

It took more than a few minutes for everyone else to reach the rendezvous point outside the base. Once they had, they were greeted by the sight of the two hedgehogs arguing over who’d won, the younger fuming as the older rested an arm on his head as if he were a kind of short armrest. After another few minutes of deliberation and the winner– Sonic –ultimately being decided in a quick thumb-wrestling match, the three teams made their way through the front doors of the large building. They searched the facility, ready to tear through any badniks in their way.

…

And yet…

…nothing.

Perplexed by the seemingly abandoned base, they turned to Omega for answers. The robot responded that the base was still registered as active on the Eggnet, prompting only further confusion. After another few minutes of searching, they finally found it: a control room filled wall to wall with monitors, each recording activity in various locations across Mobius.

The outside of the base included.

Sonic watched as the trio of detectives cornered the doctor around back, unwilling to let him escape their grasp.

Then something else…

Or…someone…

The hedgehog watched in horror as a familiar figure walked into frame from the side.

Tails gasped, “E-”

SHOOOM!

Meanwhile, outside the base, Team Chaotix continued to stare down the mad doctor.

Vector growled, “Give it up! We know your tricks!”

Espio jolted as he felt a sudden presence, drawing his kunai once more in response, “Everyone stay sharp! There’s something fast approachin-!!”

FWOOSH!

Everyone froze as the sudden gale died down.

“Huh?”

The trio of detectives jolted, shouting in unison.

“SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!!?”

“...”

The girl began to sweat as her best friend stared her down in confusion and hurt.

“Eve…?”
