Okay, so I haven't watched all of FMAB yet, but I love how Ed is so fucking oblivious. He got a gorgeous girl, way smarter than him and out of everybody's league, who plays with the cord of the telephone when they speak together because she's down bad and laughs softly when he talks. And he's like "yeah, yeah, well, I am glad you're alive haha I thought they were going to brutally fucking murder you today. So that's a relief. hi, I recently came across your post about the failures of most popular shonen animanga (it was so great to finally see it articulated like that, wholeheartedly agree with it).

do you have any recommendations for shonen animanga that does it right? that maintains a story, keeps to the themes, doesn't fizzle out and turn into a mindless training->war->training format? nothing new comes to my mind but I also haven't been keeping up with post-2000s anime. please let me know which shonen titles impressed you the most!

i'm not sure if Terror in Resonance can be considered a shonen, and it's only 11 episodes, but it's absolutely incredible. i showed it to a friend who doesn't watch/enjoy anime much and he insisted on watching the whole thing in one go because he was hooked

Mob Psycho 100 is beautiful and heartfelt and breathtakingly animated. it's full of story and meaning and i'm pretty sure it's like Done now, so you'll get the full story instead of waiting for the next season. highly recommend

Eighty-Six is gorgeous and has excellent sound design. there's a plot, there's well-animated battles, there's good character moments. it's mech without being like Big Robot mech. i have to warn you, though, that it's devastatingly sad. still really highly recommended from me though (i've watched it twice already)

No. 6 is also sad, but it's worth it. another 1-seasoner, this is a quick watch and has really great storytelling. it's been several years since i've watched it, but if i'm remembering correctly, it relies on a lot of "showing" instead of "telling" for the world building, which really set it apart for me since a lot of anime uses dialogue for exposition

Chainsaw Man is not shonen, but it's still very very good. the animation is top tier, the story is great, the characters are amazing, and it has really great pacing. as long as you're good with excess blood/gore and adult themes, you should enjoy it

Trigun Stampede has the vibe of shonen, imo, but it's certainly not shonen. it's also, quite simply, stunning. i really don't have a lot to say about it that i haven't said for the others, but you should definitely give it a shot. i personally really like the animation choices, and the music..... chefs kiss

i personally love Bungo Stray Dogs, but i also understand that it's an anime that you either click with right away or don't. the characters are unique and interesting, and there is actually a (tenuous) plot throughout all of the seasons, but it does have weakly explained power scaling (no training arcs, though, which is nice). i love the animation and really suggest watching at least the first two episodes of season 1 to see if you vibe with it

i also wouldn't be me if i didn't have Haikyuu in the list. it's a sports anime, sure, but it's shonen so it counts. is the plot super simple? yes. does it stay on-plot the whole time, though? yes. and the characters are wonderful, and it's funny and doesn't take itself too seriously. don't watch it for an engaging story, but do watch it for free serotonin (i rewatch it yearly, usually in the winter, for some happiness JSBDVKJDBF)

ALSO, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a new anime (season 1 is almost finished releasing), and i think it's absolutely lovely. it's such an interesting take on longevity/immortality and, honestly, on how to tell a story. the pacing is unique, the characters are so lovable, and the animation is stunning (the way the animators have brought fabric to life in the anime is just incredible)

godddd royai is SO fucking good. royai is laced with the kind of crack that is usually only present in unintentional queerbait. they have the kind of dynamic that every other anime gives to two men who are Just Supposed to be Besties.

i think that fullmetal alchemist is a great case study for how gay shipping in various fandoms, anime in particular, is often kickstarted by a very particular type of canon homoeroticism resulting from misogyny, and fmab serves as a counterexample. it shows that, actually, people WILL go apeshit for straight ships, provided that the author gives the women in their story enough depth and agency that they're allowed to build compelling and tense relationships with the men around them. the push and pull between roy and riza is so good — the way they know each other so well, but call each other only by their titles. the way they give each other everything yet have this barrier between them that neither allows themselves to cross. the way that, when riza catches envy in the guise of roy, it turns their very pretended formality into a show of intimacy. the way that they love each other enough to sacrifice each other, because their love is selfless, and they'll carry on each other's wishes no matter how much they want the other alive. the BATTLE COUPLE of it all. do NOT separate them.

my main thing with royai, though, is that despite it all, i don't really...ship it? in the sense that i don't create transformative work or Blorbo Imaginings of them romantically involved. simply because i think the ambiguity and platonicness of their canon dynamic is the most compelling possible version of their relationship. so yeah, im not really a royai shipper, if anything i'd only really write them as a qpr, but rest assured that whenever i see some good Royai Content i am clapping and cheering throwing flower bouquets in the air etc etc

And its just… okay yes it goes into the gutter but also just the sheer amount of societal fuckery? Like yeah there’s the ‘public sex is everywhere’ horny thought but what if we looked at it realistically?

Like there's two school of thoughts: have sex before meeting your soulmate so its not your first time and those who are more obsessed with purity.

Like everyone wearing long sleeves and gloves and pants until they meet their soulmate and its this statement.

How would a teacher who doesn't have a soulmate be treated by people? Because there's gotta be the thought of: DON’T LET THEM TOUCH THE STUDENTS because ‘what if’ (and we decided it never happens unless its university students and teachers).

What about asexuality? (we decided its all cuddles and it also is even more stigmatized cause of this world)

What would the sex education look like? Would it be very good or terrible because it’s still ‘well all vanilla heteronormative because any gay soulmates are actually fake and they deserve to die’?

Or if because its proof there are gay soulmates how has society adapted? Like is donor/surrogacy way more promoted? Are there arranged marriages between gay and lesbian soulmates like lavender marriages?

Then we got into discussing how MHA would be because of some quirks (Monoma, Shigaraki, Uraraka) and how a society where touch ends up with your soulmate like this would be seen as perverted or ‘weird’. (and Monoma facing worse shit over it because a copy Quirk is added to it). And then it's a ‘wait what about people like Momo who need skin open?’ which just spirals for us.

Take any other fandom! Marvel, Batman, FMAB, Bleach, Naruto! Just holy hell. The drama!

A villain grabbing a rando and hey the flash! A hero and villain fighting and bang! Enemies suddenly having to fuck to live! The awkwardness of being in the middle of nowhere on a road trip and your buddies accidentally touched, now you're sitting outside the car/tent trying not to listen!

Just… imagine the fucking drama, hilarity and how society would have formed!

Don't you think it's funny cause actual canon gay characters in BL manga will say "I love you" but only the shounen bromance can spew out some of the most romantic shit akin to a 19th century poet writing a letter expressing his surpressed love for his lover 😭.....

You said it best yourself, it's about the "suppressed" aspect of it all. I think one of the reasons that fans go so crazy for the shonen bromance is that it has to maintain a certain level of hype and intensity about all the aspects of its plot (including character relationships) BUT can't ever be anything more than a friendship (I mean objectively and realistically because we can fly close to the sun but I would be REALLY surprised if shonen jump ever allows an explicitly gay romance in one of its series).

So you find yourself in a situation where the author has to write a character dynamic that is just as hype and epic and intense and powerful as the fights they draw, without ever dropping the explicit "I love you" bomb. And just like you said, that's how we end up with a 19th-century poet confessing his secret suppressed love type of dialogue.

I definitely think that it's part of the appeal though. A lot of people CRAVE the suppressed love stories, with yearning and stolen glances and intense emotions that can never be shared. That's why we still love Jane Austen and gothic love stories centuries later. It's all about the slow burn babyyyy!

It also goes to show that people will go extra crazy for romance if there's a good plot attached to it. There are a lot of great stories where the relationship is the only focus and it's still amazing. But a love story being part of an ever bigger plot with higher stakes can make us go fully feral and that's what happens in Shonen.

FMAB is a pretty good example. Contrary to a lot of other shonen, it doesn't have a super strong homoerotic rivalry between two guys (unless you count Ed and Ling, because Edling is a GREAT SHIP but they're not exactly rivals like bakudeku or narusasu) and yet most of the main m/f ships are beloved by the fandom. People go crazy for Ed x Winry and Roy x Riza, because they fit a lot of the same tropes as your traditional shonen bromances. The yearning, the intensity, the slow burn, the saving each other in life or death situations ... both ships are canon and endgame BUT they are well developed and within an already great story with high stakes.

To conclude:

"I love you" = boring, done before, no spice ...

"I would go to hell for you if you asked me to" or "I will break every bone in your body if this is what it takes to bring you home and save you from him" = holy shit oh god holy shit hold on hold the fuck up holy shit oh my gooooooooood ..........

Well, since I usually get consumed by the media I’m currently on, I might end up forgetting some couples here and there. I’ll go by order of remembering 😂

SatoSugu (JJK). I simply LOVE when two characters are written in such a complimentary way. Also, it’s worth noting that Gege queer coded most of JJK, so this is one of those instances where the fandom isn’t just shipping “because yes”, it feels like the author truly meant it to be perceived that way. Given that this is a shounen in Shounen Jump, the author couldn’t have put in there a gay relationship, so he made it clear in subtext.

RoyRiza (FMAB). These two have occupied my mind for a very long time. FMAB is my all time favorite anime, it is so incredibly well written, has no plot holes, every character matters and plays a part in the story (I’m looking at you with disappointment, gege) - basically, everything is purposeful. And in that regard, we have beautifully crafted relationships. RoyRiza tugs at my heart strings because they are connected in a such deep and intimate level. It’s like, there is romantic attraction, sure, but they bond is so incredibly profound. They know each other in every single way, they’ve shared hardships together, and they’re the most important person in each others lives. I find that to be so beautiful.

JamieDani (Haunting of Bly Manor). I love the flanaverse, and mostly, I really like how he always makes sure he includes POCs and queers in all of his original work. Jamie and Dani for me share one of the most realistic and beautiful love blossoming story between two people that met by chance. One thing I specially like is that homophobia and lack of rights for queer people is not completely forgotten, but it is NOT the main point of it. Their love and unfathomable dedication to each other is. And I’m a sucker for doomed-by-narrative couples, and how they decide to be together anyway, because their love is more important to them than the sure sad ending to their tale.

for ling:

most fandom takes are incorrect: maybe it’s just me but ive seen a decent amount of people make ling out to be a pervert or just reduce him to a stupid silly character. ling yao is NOT A PERVERT! WHERE DID YOU GET THAT FROM! he would never even do HALF OF THE THINGS YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!! and he is so far from just being a funny guy that makes the audience laugh. his motives and character as a whole are so incredibly strong and i’ve never been so fascinated with a character like ling yao. please give him more attention.

that also goes hand in hand w/ stop putting them in situations!!: he would not be looking up girls skirts or something 🙁 be kind to him i think he deserves the world also. the cast of fma consists of a bunch of 14-16 year olds who traveled across the world to fulfill what they feel is their destiny but they end up on a journey of pain and suffering instead. they are children they should be playing roblox and minecraft and brain rotting like me ……….. i need a 500 chapter fic of ling being happy and joyous and eating all the wonderful meat in amestris.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NOT ENOUGH CANON / UNDERRATED: as much as i love greedling and understand the combo … i wish ling got more screentime alone separate from greed. he is really such an interesting and unique character with a banging design and sometimes i feel greed robbed him of his iconic features (his yellow jacket & sword) and people just forget that greedling exists because ling was strong enough to withstand the homunculus in his system + LING IS THE BODY!!! he is serving that facecard and body 24/7 because that’s all ling yao!!! i still do really like greedling because they have a lot of room for interaction but i feel like ling yao is one of the characters who is often forgotten when it comes to merch n whatnot. he’s not as much of a main character as ed of course but he is just forgotten!! he is really such a cool character i wish there was more of him everywhere

there’s probably a deep seated reason why i love him: yes. because he is me and i am him (not really). i just project onto him and he is just me at this point! i will forever be such a huge ling yao fan the first time i watched fmab i instantly got attached to him i am so happy he is alive. i hope being the king of the yao clan is treating him well though he didn’t look to happy in that one photo of him as emperor….. it’s a tough job so i get it man! i hope he explodes

for edling:

pretty privilege: they are both pretty. brotherhood art style is a bit inconsistent at times i feel but their designs are both so gorgeous (their colors complement one another!). and also the bloodhell episode. ling yao fighting envy with his cool sword and handsome face…. ed somehow still looking pretty despite all the traveling and fighting. they are pretty!!!

don’t typically discuss irl because of fandom: more and more people nowadays seem to forget fma franchise as a whole 🙁 it makes me so sad because this series is so fire and i wish it would keep its popularity but it obviously makes sense that more relevant shows and animes will overtake its light. i’m also afraid most people don’t like edling (edling nation consists of like 10 people) so i just don’t really talk about fma irl at all! no one here has a Fullmetal heart..

everything else is just me wanting to bite them (lovingly) and stuff them in my pocket and hold them in the palm of my hands to show them off to the world. i do not actually want to plot their demise and i am not actively doing so. i would put them in a wood chipper in a loving manner

for ed:

has done nothing wrong: he’s innocent, your honor… everything he’s ever done has been for his family. he’s committed a huge taboo in the alchemy world by trying human transmutation but him and al just wanted their moms back. they were TOO YOUNG TO BE ORPHANS AND HAVE TO GROW UP WITHOUT THEIR MOTHERS LOVE! he ended up becoming a dog for the military but he had to do what he had to do to get closer to that philosopher stone… in 03 he did end up taking some lives too i think. he’s only 15 and never intended to Actually murder someone. seeing him after the greed scene is so incredibly heartbreaking. 03 and cos are such horrific renditions of fma (in a good way) and it makes me so sad to think that’s how he ended up??? he had so much hope as a little kid and was so full of life but by 18 he’s stranded from the last bit of family he knew and is left a depressed alcoholic who keeps losing people. edward elric has done nothing wrong..

there’s probably a deep seated reason why i love him: even from the outside HE IS SUCH A COOL CHARACTER. a character who canonical has prosthetic limbs is already so cool. knowing the story behind those limbs and his brother is so 🙁☹️☹️… his iconic red jacket!!! his LEATHER PANTS WITH HIS PLATFORM BOOTS? his striking gold eyes and bright blonde hair? how he wears his stupid pocket watch…. his dumbass belt… i love edward elric’s flamboyant style so much i’ve never seen a more bi-coded character ever. i love everything about his design and his personality is unlike most shonen anime protags and that adds to his charm. he is hot-headed and will bite your head off if you comment on his height or call him pipsqueak but he is still such a sharp and intelligent young man .. He is literally an Alchemy God…. he is so capable even at such a young age and carries himself so well because if i were him i would be breaking down crying every step of the way! he is dedicated and loyal to his cause of finding the philosophers stone to return their bodies back to normal and doesn’t even hinder once throughout the journey. he loves his brother dearly and it makes me so joyous to see a strong sibling relationship in this genre that isn’t Weird. favourite thing: I love how nice and gentle and sweet he is despite everything going on, but also in 03 how he has this anger and almost self disregard bubbling as time goes - when he's captured by envy thinking he should have died so many times in the past, when he tries to rip wrath arm off to give it to ed, when he recklessly sacrifices himself to try and save ed

least favourite thing: I feel like cos shortchanges him way too much. we get such a compelling insight into ed throughout the whole series even if much is implicit, but cos doesn't really reckon with either al losing his memory and how he feels about that or have time to deal w him regaining it and what that means for him and ed. and I get it's prob partially intentional because amnesiac al feeling more unknowable deliberately alienates us from him - he genuinely feels different, and we have to wonder if the recklessly cheery attitude is a facade to cope w missing ed. but nonetheless it feels like cos kindve demotes al from the co protagonist position he had throughout the series

favourite line: not fav for any deep content but i love the delivery - the bit in cos where ed lands in the armour pile, sees a helmet that looks just like al - and then its eyes light up and you hear a 'niisan..? NIISAN!!'

brotp: ed and al!!!! I love their relationship so much it is so deep and powerful. but also scar and al is such a nice duo - the way scar vicariously lives through the elrics brotherly love because he regrets letting his crush on human lust get in the way of telling his brother he loved him 😭 also al/wrath post COS bc the film left so much of their relationship unexplored and I need to know

otp: I think al/fletcher could be kindve cute. al/wrath too - I know some ppl find it icky bc of wrath viewing sloth as his mama but I feel like aside from the sloth/trisha distinction it doesn't really create a brotherly relationship btwn the elrics and wrath. and im just as content w it as a brotp too anyway so

random headcanon: not cis and not straight - being trapped in a body you don't recognise and feeling cut off from really living and engaging w the world is dripping w queer subtext! more specifically I like nonbinary gay al but I can really see it going in any direction. (altho I can't think of any girls I would want to ship him with in 03 or fmab)

unpopular opinion: uhh... I don't know how unpopular it is but him and mei as a couple in fmab does not make sense to me lol

fav thing: he is just such an interesting addition into the gaps of the source material?? making izumis baby who she tried to transmute into a homunculus is soo interesting even just in a meta sense, and the whole parent child switcheroo between sloth/izumi and wrath/elrics is so good

least fav things: I need to know more about him post COS and his relationship w al and winry and izumi!!!! especially since he was one of the few people who really knew wtf was going on down in the underground city along w rose

fav line: 'she was your mama too' when the elrics kill sloth. brutal

brotp: as above him and al but also I'm dying to know what his dynamic w winry was. and come to think of iit envy too honestly

otp: al/wrath ig (per the disclaimers above) but aside from that idk lol who do you ship him with
