Scientists develop coating for enhanced thermal imaging through hot windows
A team of Rice University scientists has solved a long-standing problem in thermal imaging, making it possible to capture clear images of objects through hot windows. Imaging applications in a range of fields—such as security, surveillance, industrial research and diagnostics—could benefit from the research findings, which were reported in the journal Communications Engineering. "Say you want to use thermal imaging to monitor chemical reactions in a high-temperature reactor chamber," said Gururaj Naik, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice and corresponding author on the study. "The problem you'd be facing is that the thermal radiation emitted by the window itself overwhelms the camera, obscuring the view of objects on the other side." A possible solution could involve coating the window in a material that suppresses thermal light emission toward the camera, but this would also render the window opaque. To get around this issue, the researchers developed a coating that relies on an engineered asymmetry to filter out the thermal noise of a hot window, doubling the contrast of thermal imaging compared to conventional methods.

From the bridge of the Shadowsea, Ada watched the monitors and gritted her teeth. The camera drone was barely keeping up with Cinquain's flight armor, and on top of that, throttling down its bandwidth to the relay to stay beneath the station's detection threshold as they approached, so the picture was getting steadily worse. She keyed the mic.
"Cinq. How are you holding up?"
"Green across the board, boss. Thermals where they should be. Deflek geometry solid, aerodynamics smooth like butter."
"Not the armor, Cinq. You."
"Green across the board, boss," her pilot repeated. "You nervous? You sound nervous."
No point in hiding it. "Always."
"Don't be. You trained me for this. Tell the mission jitters to fuck off."
"Wish I could. I don't have your triggers."
"Hard life you live, boss." Her pilot paused. "Coming up on the go/no-go line. We doin' this or what?"
She released the mic switch for the duration of one long intake of breath, held it again. "We're doing it."
"Right."
"And here's me," she told her pilot, and flicked a quartet of hardswitches across the width of the console. The Shadowsea's automatics took it from there.
For a quiet minute, nothing happened.
Then, when the moment was right, the firing solution perfect, the ship shuddered as its twin railguns hurled cobalt slugs in perfect over-the-horizon arcs. Elsewhere on the planet's surface, Cinquain had entrenched weapons where Ada commanded; now buried hypersonic missile launchers ripped their way to the surface to launch a a follow-up barrage of smarter, heavier ordnance.
The camera feed lit up white and then went to SIGNAL LOST. On the voice link, Cinquain whooped and then her signal was gone too.
Ada bit her lip. Nothing to do but wait. And oh, how she hated waiting.
The signals came back, eventually.
The camera drone had survived, and in its feed, defense drones fell burning from the sky. Pillars of ash spread from where railguns and missiles had blasted the station's air defenses to dust. The black wings of Cinquain's armor in approach configuration showed briefly against the steel and glass of the station itself, and then, nothing.
She put the drone into signal relay mode and switched to Cinquain's armor's camera just as Cinquain smashed through the station's walls. The video feed was chaotic, patchy, contrast blown by weapon flash. Most, not all, from Cinq's own weapon.
It was over quickly. She watched every second, room by room, unflinching, reminding herself what this all cost in the end, what was gained, what was lost.
"—day— … —ender—"
"Say again, Cinq."
"I said, that's something you don't see every day, boss. Finally got one of the bastards to surrender."
The armor's camera showed a room full of metal shelves, and a young woman, wearing the usual black and gold but cringing, arms crossed in front of her face as if to ward off Cinquain's cannon.
That didn't happen. Their indoctrination ran deeper than she'd ever been able to figure out a way around — at least, in the field. "You're kidding."
"Nah. Somebody's lucky day, I guess."
"Is the station secure?"
"Other'n this chick, yeah. Everything matched up with our blueprints and personnel records."
"Good. Hold for pickup. I'm bringing the ship in."
"Urgh." She could hear the grimace in her pilot's voice. "Be careful, will ya?"
Despite the chain of command being obvious, short, and to push the metaphor, tightly wrapped around a certain pilot's neck, Cinquain still considered the Shadowsea hers.
Pilots.
"Funny of you to tell me that."
"I'm the one who has to fix the paint job. And last time, two layers of armor underneath—"
Ada spoke a phrase into the mic.
In a voice entirely drained of its irritation, as well as its accent, Cinquain replied: "I hear and obey, Miss."
"Good girl," Ada purred. "Continue to hold. I'll be there shortly."
She reached up to pull the flight controls into position…

NASA's dust shield successfully repels lunar regolith on moon
NASA's Electrodynamic Dust Shield (EDS) successfully demonstrated its ability to remove regolith, or lunar dust and dirt, from its various surfaces on the moon during Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 1, which concluded on March 16.
Lunar dust is extremely abrasive and electrostatic, which means it clings to anything that carries a charge. It can damage everything from spacesuits and hardware to human lungs, making lunar dust one of the most challenging features of living and working on the lunar surface.
The EDS technology uses electrodynamic forces to lift and remove the lunar dust from its surfaces. The "before" image highlights the glass and thermal radiator surfaces covered in a layer of regolith, while the "after" image reveals the results following EDS activation. Dust was removed from both surfaces, proving the technology's effectiveness in mitigating dust accumulation.
This milestone marks a significant step toward sustaining long-term lunar and interplanetary operations by reducing dust-related hazards to a variety of surfaces for space applications ranging from thermal radiators, solar panels, and camera lenses to spacesuits, boots, and helmet visors.
The EDS technology is paving the way for future dust mitigation solutions, supporting NASA's Artemis campaign and beyond. NASA's Electrodynamic Dust Shield was developed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida with funding from NASA's Game Changing Development Program, managed by the agency's Space Technology Mission Directorate.

While Palestine Action US is targeting Elbit systems to protest the ongoing genocide in Palestine, Elbit’s tools of occupation are also being deployed in the US. As Antony Loewenstein documents in his book, The Palestine Laboratory, Israeli defense contractors test their wares on Palestinians and then export their tools of surveillance and warfare around the world. Loewenstein highlights the connection between so-called border security in the US and the oppression of Palestinians, writing, “Israeli technology was sold as the solution to unwanted populations at the US–Mexico border where the Israeli company Elbit was a major player in repelling migrants.” In her book Border and Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism, Harsha Walia describes how US Customs Enforcement officials impose the violence of bordering on Tohono O’odham lands, along the US Southern border. Walia wrote, “US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has contracted Israel’s largest private arms company, Elbit Systems, to construct ten surveillance towers, making Tohono O’odham one of the most militarized communities in the US.” In 2017, members of the Tohono O’odham Hemajkam Rights Network (TOHRN), went to Palestine on a visit organized by the Palestinian group Stop the Wall. TOHRN member Amy Jaun told Antony Loewenstein that it was a relief to talk “with people who understand our fears … who are dealing with militarization and technology.” In 2022, after years of resistance from Tohono O’odham organizers, the construction of the contested surveillance towers was completed. As Will Parrish reported in The Intercept in 2019, each tower is outfitted with thermal sensors, high-definition cameras with night vision, and ground-sweeping radar. As Parrish noted, “The system will store an archive with the ability to rewind and track individuals’ movements across time — an ability known as ‘wide-area persistent surveillance.’” The Tohono O’odham’s struggle against the construction of Elbit’s towers is just one example of how the company is exporting Israel’s tools of bordering and occupation. In The Palestine Laboratory, Loewenstein describes an event at the Paris Air Show in 2009, where Elbit screened drone footage for “an elite audience of global buyers.” The footage showcased the assassination of a Palestinian. A subsequent investigation by Andrew Feinstein, a global expert on the arms industry, who observed the sales video pitch in Paris, revealed that innocent Palestinians, including women and children, were killed during the drone attack that Elbit showcased at the Paris Air Show. Feinstein told Loewenstein, “This was my introduction to the Israeli arms industry and the way it markets itself. No other arms-producing country would dare show actual footage like that.” As evidenced by the construction of surveillance towers in Tohono O’odham lands, Elbit’s work extends beyond the bounds of war, but the lines between war-making, surveillance and what governments call “security” are murky, at best. When tools of war and subjugation are tested on a captive population, and marketed on the basis of how effectively those people are killed, how do we expect those tools to be deployed globally?

Solar Panel Inspection: Ensuring a Bright and Efficient Future
In today’s world, clean energy is more than just a trend — it’s a necessity. Solar power has become one of the most widely adopted renewable energy sources, offering a sustainable solution to our growing electricity demands. But as more homeowners, businesses, and governments invest in solar panels, a crucial question often gets overlooked:
Are these solar panels being properly maintained and inspected?
Just like any other piece of technology, solar panels need regular inspection to operate at peak efficiency. In this post, let’s dive into the importance of solar panel inspection, how it’s done, and why it’s essential for anyone who relies on the sun to power their life.
☀️ Why Solar Panel Inspection Matters
At first glance, solar panels seem like low-maintenance assets. They sit quietly on rooftops or open fields, absorbing sunlight and generating electricity. But that doesn’t mean they’re immune to problems. Over time, several issues can impact performance, including:
Dust and dirt accumulation
Bird droppings or nesting
Cracks from hail or debris
Loose wiring or connection faults
Shading from growing trees or new structures
Even minor issues can reduce energy output, sometimes by 20% or more. In large solar farms or commercial setups, this drop can mean significant financial loss over time.
That’s where regular inspections come in — not only to catch issues early but to prevent major damage, extend the lifespan of the system, and protect your investment.
🔍 What Happens During a Solar Panel Inspection?
A typical solar panel inspection is more thorough than most people realize. It usually involves both visual and technical evaluations. Here’s what it looks like:
Visual Assessment The inspector checks for any visible damage — cracks, discolored cells, frame warping, or dirt buildup. They may use binoculars, ladders, or even drones for hard-to-reach arrays.
Electrical Testing Technicians use tools like multimeters and IV curve tracers to check current, voltage, and overall output against expected values.
Thermal Imaging Infrared cameras detect hot spots that may indicate malfunctioning cells or internal wiring problems. This is especially important for larger systems.
System Monitoring Review If the solar system has monitoring software, the inspector will review performance data to identify dips, trends, or alerts that need attention.
Report Generation After the inspection, a report is created that outlines the system’s current health, any detected issues, and recommended actions.
🛠️ How Often Should Solar Panels Be Inspected?
The frequency of inspection depends on several factors — system size, location, exposure to harsh weather, and whether the system is residential or commercial.
Residential systems should be inspected at least once a year.
Commercial and industrial systems may benefit from inspections every 6 months.
After extreme weather events (hailstorms, heavy snowfall, etc.), a quick post-event inspection is always a smart move.
Some solar companies offer annual maintenance plans that include routine inspection, cleaning, and monitoring — a convenient way to stay on top of system health.
🚁 Drone Technology: A Modern Inspection Tool
One of the biggest game-changers in solar panel inspection is the use of drones. Equipped with high-resolution cameras and thermal sensors, drones can inspect large solar installations in a fraction of the time it would take a ground team.
With drone inspections:
Visual and thermal data can be collected simultaneously.
Dangerous areas can be accessed safely.
Data is processed with AI to spot issues instantly.
Inspection time is reduced by up to 80%.
While drones are typically used in larger or commercial installations, some residential service providers now offer drone inspections as part of premium packages.
🌿 Solar Panel Cleaning: A Vital Part of Maintenance
Inspection often goes hand in hand with cleaning. Dirty panels can lose efficiency, and in dusty or pollen-heavy regions, buildup can occur quickly. Depending on your environment, panels may need professional cleaning once or twice a year.
Some common cleaning methods include:
Soft brushes and purified water
Low-pressure washing systems
Robotic cleaning devices for large solar farms
Avoid using abrasive tools or harsh chemicals — these can damage the panel’s surface and void warranties.
📈 Long-Term Benefits of Regular Inspections
Maintaining a solar system might seem like a hassle, but the benefits of regular inspections are too valuable to ignore:
Improved Energy Output: Keep your panels producing at maximum capacity.
Increased ROI: More energy means bigger savings or higher payouts on feed-in tariffs.
Early Detection of Problems: Fix small issues before they become expensive.
System Longevity: Well-maintained panels can last 25–30 years or more.
Peace of Mind: You know your system is running safely and efficiently.

InGaAs Image Sensors Market Drivers Include Rising Demand for Infrared Industrial Vision Systems
Introduction
Rising automation, stricter quality standards, and the quest for reliable low-light inspection are propelling the InGaAs Image Sensors Market toward unprecedented growth. Made from indium-gallium-arsenide, these sensors capture visible-to-short-wave-infrared (SWIR) wavelengths, making them indispensable for modern industrial vision systems that must see beyond what silicon-based detectors can perceive. The market is expected to grow significantly as manufacturers intensify investments in photonics-enabled production lines.

1. Industrial Vision Systems Lead Demand
The strongest driver is the integration of SWIR cameras into production-floor machine-vision systems. Silicon detectors become ineffective above 1 µm, leaving inspection gaps in semiconductor wafer probing, electrolyte checks in lithium-ion batteries, and mixed-plastic sorting. In contrast, InGaAs arrays can detect moisture, organic compounds, and silicon defects through protective coatings, enabling complete, non-destructive in-line inspection. As automation expands, factories demand sensors that offer high-speed imaging and reliability under harsh operational conditions.
2. Process-Automation Economics: Why Infrared Pays for Itself
SWIR-enabled imaging reduces false rejects and rework by revealing invisible contaminants or layer thickness variations. Automotive paint shops can minimize scrap by identifying solvent pockets, while pharmaceutical production lines using InGaAs systems achieve quick return on investment due to improved defect detection. These gains help justify the higher upfront costs of InGaAs-based solutions, especially in high-volume or high-value manufacturing sectors.
3. Low-Light Advantages and Spectral Selectivity
Unlike thermal detectors that require emitted heat, InGaAs sensors operate in the reflective SWIR band (0.9–1.7 µm), providing high-contrast imaging even under low-light conditions. These sensors can work with invisible, eye-safe LED illumination, making them ideal for around-the-clock inspection. Narrow-band filtering enables detection of specific materials like epoxy, moisture, or sugars, enhancing precision without redesigning hardware, which makes InGaAs a versatile tool across industries.
4. Falling Costs and Technological Breakthroughs
Three major advances are driving costs down:
Improved manufacturing yields – Modern fabrication techniques have increased sensor yields, reducing per-unit cost.
Wafer-level packaging – Integration of micro-optics and signal processing at the wafer level lowers assembly complexity.
Flexible integration – Open firmware and modular architecture allow OEMs to customize performance without incurring licensing costs.
As a result, the total cost of deploying InGaAs-based vision systems is dropping, encouraging broader adoption even in mid-sized industrial operations.
5. Regulatory, Safety, and Sustainability Catalysts
Government regulations now push for non-contact, accurate inspection across industries like food safety, battery production, and chemical handling. InGaAs image sensors meet regulatory expectations for material detection and quality control. They also contribute to sustainability goals by enhancing combustion control in furnaces and kilns, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions across industrial operations.
6. Regional Hotspots
Asia-Pacific: Strong manufacturing infrastructure and government subsidies are boosting domestic production and deployment of SWIR systems.
North America: Military and defense applications are accelerating InGaAs sensor demand for field-deployable systems and night-vision solutions.
Europe: Environmental compliance and industrial innovation are encouraging adoption in recycling and automation-focused sectors.
Each region is witnessing demand driven by a unique combination of policy, infrastructure, and sectoral focus.
7. Competitive Landscape
The market is currently dominated by a mix of global and regional players.
