And so our story begins…

Okay, so if you’ve been around the fandom on Tumblr/Fanfiction.net, you will probably have seen me write “Oliver is autistic, I will die on this hill” on a post or story. If you have not, then, you have now. Congrats.

I came to this revelation maybe three years ago now. I had been in a discussion with some fandom friends and something in the conversation had made me wonder if Oliver was autistic.

We’ve all seen the cliche representations of autistic people in the media, especially those coded as such without explicit confirmation. For example, Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory. These characters are often there for comedic value, where we, the audience, laugh at them for their disability. The shows get away with it because they never explicitly state the character is autistic.

I’m getting off track already.

So after the discussion mentioned before, I went away and began my research - to Google! Now, I have to admit, part of my curiosity regarding this matter is because I have been told I write Oliver well. Personally, I feel I write him a little OOC, but I like how I write him so it doesn’t bother me. I write Oliver as a version of myself. So my thought patterns at the time were that if Oliver was autistic, could I be too?

Oh yes, you thought you were just here for an educational piece about autism? Nope, you’re getting the whole damn story as to why I will die on this hill.

So I did my research and I found lists of signs of autism. I devoured internet articles and soon it was all I was interested in. I even bought a book titled ‘Aspergirls’ by Rudy Simone (who is autistic). If any of you read this piece and start wondering if you’re autistic (and you’re female, more on gender later!), I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I literally cried reading it.

The signs!

Okay so what are all these signs, let’s start a list! Autistic people can have:

Rituals that they refuse to change,

Odd or repetitive movements,

Unusual sensory reactions,

Be clumsy or awkward,

Nervous in large social groups,

Have a hard time making friends,

Speak in unusual ways or with an odd tone of voice,

Talk only about themselves/their interests,

Have narrow, often obsessive interests,

Want to be alone, or want to interact but not know how,

Avoid eye contact,

Have a hard time understanding body language,

Have trouble understanding other people’s feelings or talking about their own feelings,

Poor/abnormal posture, often sit on chairs oddly,

Trouble with left, right and other directions,

Large or unique vocabulary,

Lack of organisation,

Intense compassion/empathy,

Intense anger or no anger at all,

Connections with animals,

Difficulty understanding pop culture, styles, trends, etc.

Rigid in their ways,

Okay, I’ll stop there. I could probably go on if I wanted to, because although I’ve written a lot of things there, these are all manifestations of the clinical diagnosis criteria.

Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts, as manifested by the following, currently or by history (examples are illustrative, not exhaustive; see text):

Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation; to reduced sharing of interests, emotions, or affect; to failure to initiate or respond to social interactions.

Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviours used for social interaction, ranging, for example, from poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication; to abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures; to a total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication.

Back to the story

So I went to my doctor after all of this reading. I was convinced. Nothing had ever made so much sense to me in my entire life as reading about autism.

I was, at this point, what people in the autism community call “self-diagnosed”. Now I was lucky, I could go on to get a “proper” diagnosis. Not everyone is as lucky. Many doctors do not believe that girls/women can be autistic. Many doctors do not believe that ethnic minorities can be autistic. Many doctors do not believe adults can be autistic. In some countries, people do not have free healthcare and so they cannot afford a diagnosis. There are many reasons why people can’t/won’t get diagnosed.

The point I’m trying to make is that if you see someone posting about being self-diagnosed, don’t be all “oh but a doctor hasn’t said it so you’re not”, because that person does not need your doubt and it does not help anyone. Their self-diagnosis helps them to navigate their life and it does not hurt anyone. Honestly, the amount of people that are “wrong” about their self-diagnosis is probably very small, and those that are probably have some other kind of neurodivergent condition such as ADHD.

Anyway, my doctor gave me a form to fill in, a questionnaire. A series of questions aimed very much at the male expression of autism. I felt horrible at the time, because I knew exactly how to answer these questions to fill the boxes required. I knew because I had read so much about autism that I knew what they wanted to hear.

I filled it in honestly. I scored highly enough anyway.

My doctor did not know who to refer me to. She had never had to refer an adult before. She asked around and found out what to do; I got put on a waiting list.

A while later, at work, I found out I could get tested privately and work would pay for it. Oh, how I love my job. I spoke to someone who had been the manager of another employee who had gone through the process. That helped.

I talked to the man who was supposed to be the disability advisor, he made me fill in the same questionnaire that my doctor did. I filled it in again.

I was on another waiting list.

The advisor had also recommended me a book, which I bought and read and hated. The language used very much implied that I would never be ‘great’, just ‘coping’. It was written by a neurotypical person. I told the advisor by email that this book was stupid and damaging. He did not reply.

Months later, the private assessment happened. I spent an entire day with a clinical psychologist and a speech and language therapist. My parents and manager came too. I answered questions, had to explain things to them, made up stories with random objects. My parents, mainly my mother, talked about my childhood.

At the end of it all, they decided I was autistic.

I was ecstatic.

The day before, a person at work said I was a hypochondriac. One of those people who read about conditions on the internet and convince myself that I have them. I still do not talk to that person.

Finally, everything made sense. Finally, I had a reason why people made fun of me for reasons I could not fathom. Finally, my weirdness had a name.

The Gender Issue

So there is a ‘gender issue’ with autism and it’s diagnosis. Everything is aimed at young (white) boys. It’s designed for the stereotype of the young boy who likes to collect trains. And that’s why there are five times as many autistic boys in comparison with girls.

People of colour, women and girls are very often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Generalised anxiety disorder, depression, OCD, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, various eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, ADHD…

The list goes on.

Now, that’s not to say many girls don’t have these things. Often they do. But often they have those and autism.

I very much doubt there is five times as many autistic boys. I think there are just a hell of a lot of women and girls who are undiagnosed.

Why this disparity? Well, autism presents differently in girls, or perhaps, society sees it differently.

When a young boy is quiet and withdrawn, happy to play by themselves, something is wrong. When a girl is quiet and withdrawn, she’s just shy. There’s also a lot of evidence to suggest that girls are a lot better at masking their autism.

Essentially, due to the societal pressure on young girls, they hide their autism and mimic their peers. That’s why the most common time for a woman to get diagnosed with autism is when she has children of her own and they’re getting diagnosed.

Is it genetic? There’s no strict evidence of an ‘autistic’ gene, I don’t think. But its quite common. When I was getting tested, I gave the previously mentioned book to my mother and said, “Hey, can you read this, I think I have this”. My mother read the book and told me she thought she had given it to me. She got tested two months ago.

I also look at my father and see many of the traits. But he has no interest in getting tested.

If you’re intersted, google “autism in girls” or something similar, there are plenty of resources.

The result

So I have my diagnosis, my work is fully informed. I am now protected by the Disability Act. I can’t use disabled parking spaces, but some autistic people can, if they need it.

What does this mean for me? It means that my employer has to make adjustments for me to make me comfortable for work. Changing the lighting, giving me a quiet place to work, working with me on deadlines and stuff. They know now (officially) that I have issues with auditory processing, and that they should take that into account.

I’m lucky, my employer has been good about this, and it is in their interest to. Autistic people can be an asset to any company. They are often experts in their chosen field and will work solidly on stuff they enjoy.

Lots of autistic people are not as lucky. They are one of the highest unemployed groups. Workplaces are full of unwritten rules that are hard for autistic people. This brings me on to…

Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month. You may see this as Autism Awareness Month in some places. But I don’t like that. “Awareness months” and “awareness days” are often reserved for horrible diseases like cancer, for which we want a cure.

There are a lot of resources out there from damaging institutions this month, such as Autism Speaks. They are advocating for a cure and also promote ABA (a type of ‘therapy’ that is disgusting and should not be allowed). If you take anything from all this, please do not support Autism Speaks.

There is no cure for Autism. It is a developmental disorder. It’s not a disease.

But what about the vaccines?

Of course, I cannot talk about autism without mentioning the vaccines!

In the 90s, about 1 in 150 children were diagnosed with autism, by the early 2000’s, this went up to 1 in 68. One of the big things that had changed in this time was the number of vaccines children had.

There have been many studies regarding autism and vaccines. And there was one that said there was a link between autism and vaccines. In this study, there were 12 subjects.

Now I do statistics for a day job. So I can tell you categorically, that 12 subjects for a study is not enough for decisive proof. The person who did this study was struck off and rightly so.

But the media got hold of this idea.

And so the anti-vaxxers rose up, refusing to vaccinate their children from deadly diseases because obviously, being autistic was worse than being dead.

In summary, vaccinate your children.

Side note, I, as an autistic person, am allowed to make jokes about vaccines. For example, I received some vaccinations before travelling and joked with the nurse that I was ‘topping up my autism’. This is funny because we both knew it was wrong.

‘Autistic person’ vs ‘person with autism’

This one is a tricky one. I’ve seen arguments both ways.

‘Person with autism’ puts the person first, but also makes the autism sound like an accessory.

‘Autistic person’ puts the disability first, but you can’t separate the person from the autism, it’s intrinsic to who they are.

Basically, this is up to the person. If they prefer one way or the other, use it. It’s like pronouns, you use what the person you’re talking about asks you to use.

Personally, I’m not too fussy, but I lean towards ‘autistic person’.

Asperger’s vs Autism

Asperger’s was merged into the general Autism diagnosis criteria a while back. Asperger’s is what is sometimes called ‘high functioning autism’. The autism community do not like the term ‘high functioning’ because it denies aid, in the same way that ‘low functioning’ denies agency. The criteria for ‘low functioning’ is having an IQ under 70. So it’s quite broad.

Also people who have been classified as ‘high functioning’ don’t necessarily function well in everyday life without help.

Also, Hans Asperger’s was a bit of a knobhead, so a lot of people don’t like using his name.

Headcanons

A headcanon is a fan’s personal, idiosyncratic interpretation of canon, such as habits of a character, the backstory of a character, or the nature of relationships between characters. The term comes from the fact that it is the canon that exists in a fan’s head.

So when I say ‘Oliver is autistic’, this is my personal headcanon. Do I want it to become fanon? Yes, of course, I do. In the same way, I love that Yasuhara x Gene has become popular (for which I take full responsibility).

But if you disagree with it, that’s fine. You’re allowed to do that. I will not think any less of you for it. Because at the end of the day, the author has not come out and said ‘Oliver is autistic’.

Personally, as an autistic writer, who has always written some of her characters as autistic, whether she knew it or not, I suspect the author of Ghost Hunt might be an undiagnosed autistic person. Because Oliver is not the only person I recognise traits in… But that’s for another day.

If you only take one thing away from reading all of this, then let it be this:

If you’ve met one autistic person, that’s it. You have met ONE autistic person.

We’re all different, just like everyone else.

i should also probably let you guys know:

work issued a two-week ultimatum for me to “””””improve”””” (on things they won’t even give me SPECIFICS for?), or I’l losing my job.

So all I asked or is a thorough, detailed checklist of things I have to “improve on”, and complete during my shifts, because to my knowledge, I am doing everything I was trained to do.

tl;dr after about three weeks of conversations, me asking managers about priorities vs. time management, I figured out that they want me to randomly “notice” OTHER things to do, which doesn’t happen when you’re a non-visual person with ADD, especially when I’m very concerned with keeping my area clean, and my skillset, the way my brain works, is very specialized. this is why I’m good at anatomy, chemistry, and ecology, but not very great at small talk, unless I have an internal dichotomous script (”if they say this, I’ll say that. But if they say the opposite, here’s how I respond.”)

Point is, they’re asking me to do something I am physically unable to do.

Ask my stepmother-- she’s been yelling at me for this stuff all my life. Calling me names over it. ABUSING me for it. So that’s a little terrifying to the part of me with PTSD as well as the part that doesn’t want to lose her fucking job over this.

And I don’t know if this will even work...

So they gave me a form, I took it to my psychiatrist and my councilor, and I had them sign it yesterday, and also got a note from the psychiatrist on how my ADD is debilitating and a freaking CHECKLIST will help me do my job.

(How hard is it to make a checklist? How is that something I needed a form and a doctor’s note for??? PetSmart and Chipotle had checklists that expanded on their corporate checklists by CHOICE, long BEFORE I came into the picture. I told them this, I told them it works miracles on me, and the Target people STILL don’t want to make me one.)

The Americans with Disabilities Act REQUIRES employers to make “Reasonable Accomodations” for employees with disabilities.

Hohboy, is ADD fucking debilitating.

But making a freaking CHECKLIST for me? How is that an unreasonable accommodation.

I make them every week.

It takes me about two hours, because I have to re-run things constantly, to make sure I didn’t forget anything... even just to build my grocery list......

...but somebody who’s able to sit there and, in focus and tangent-free thought, tick things off on their fingers? This list would take, maybe a half hour. Including the time for lamination. There’s one right in that office. And we already have dry erase markers in my department (...even though we have no dry erase board there???)....

I’m not asking for that much time, effort, or resources. It is a VERY Reasonable request for Accommodation.

So, they are at the point where they’re being a little ridiculous about not wanting to put any liiiittle Extra effort into... helping an employee improve? (Isn’t that a manager’s entire JOB?)

...I mean... when I brought my concerns to another manager, she didn’t even flinch and basically said, ask the department lead for a thorough list when she gets back from vacation. SHE didn’t need a note to justify it.... but whatever.

I’m at the point of looking for another, better-managed job. Problem is: not even the specialized, local veterinary jobs are paying $10.50/hour. (Minimum wage here is about $8.50. And most secretarial and assistant jobs, without the vet tech registration/certification, are only offering $9/hour.)

....sooooooooo I don’t really want to lose this job. I’m kinda liking the cushy pay and immense relief of financial anxiety, and ability to buy my own food without cutting into rent costs.

(I’ll still be applying for food stamps, because food DOES cut into costs for, say, a new pair of shoes to replace my work shoes that are starting to, literally, fall apart... but you only notice if you look straight at them. That isn’t as essential as rent.)

...and I can’t apply for medicaid and food stamps because the family won’t, you know, actually SIGN a paper stating that I’m paying them rent.... -_-

...but in the meantime: $10.50 is satisfying my immediate needs, until I can get out of school and ask for higher pay....

I don’t want to give up just because the immediate managers are being dicks about my ADD, honestly. I was over the MOON when I was hired by Target, and I told every single manager this. I am GOING to fight for it, even if I have to call

...I’m still kind of considering applying for disability........ but I don’t think I’ve been working for 5 years solid, juuust yet. And you need 10 credits, one for every 6 months, of being in the working world. And all I have on my side is a diagnosis from age 7, I need to kind of get my medical providers more aware of my issues and how they limit me before I can ask for a thorough note and ask them to fill out extensive paperwork regarding my disability to perform basic tasks...

...it’s so ridiculous and frustrating that I can name every part of a neuron, list off hormones and neurotransmitters, tell you the difference, and tell you what most of them do, from what I read ONCE last night. But I can’t accomplish a simple task like “notice the pizza sauce on the counter right in front of you and notice that you have to clean it up”.

Because my attention is internally controlled, not externally controlled.

Because I have ADD.

And this makes me immensely driven to accomplish tasks I know I need to accomplish.

But this also makes it damn-near impossible to seek new tasks that I’m not already aware of.

An internal locust of control grants me immense powers of responsibility, drive, motivation, and desire to do things for the sake of getting them done.

But everyone else around me seems to focus with an external locust, where their environment guides them and motivates them. Where they do things by seeing that it needs done. Usually without ADD getting in the way.

And this means they simply can’t actually comprehend my struggles. How it limits me... how I need specific, individual direction if tehy want me to suceed.

I just need help.

And I think that’s the most frustrating thing; I genuinely did think I was being a phenomenal employee. I got accolades from several superiors, at least three customers individually told me they love it when I serve them because I’m “very polite”, or “make good recommendations”, or “this is my new favorite drink”. And I don’t even LIKE people, I’m just very good at manipulating them into thinking I’m ~happy~ with my facial muscles and vocal tone.

The managers are willing to criticize, but not address the root causes of my supposed shortcomings.

And even with my internal locust of control, I know there are forces I cannot control. Like short-sightedness. And narrow-mindedness. And managers not understanding their duties and required accommodations listed under federal LAW.

And that sucks, because there’s so much more I could give, if only they’d open that door and let me see what it is I need, so I can give it. Because obviously, I can’t open it myself. I can’t “just look around and see”. I can’t. I never will. Not until they teach me what to look for.

(And is that ever too much to ask? “What do I need to SEEK? I can’t just notice things; I need to SEEK them. I need to know what I’m looking for, and when to look for it.” Why are these questions they can’t answer?)

I saw this incredibly written blog post about anxiety and it resonated with me more than anything I've ever read about mental illness. I wanted to add a few of my own and I don’t even know if in any way it really describes what is so hard to put into words. This is for me. Right now I am in the bright moments in between the bad days and it all seems so silly when everything isn’t so dark. I guess talking is the key and anyway, I hope to look at this and picture a time when I won't have to feel this way.

Anxiety is an invalid excuse. That is why I sit in the back of the classroom closest to the door. That's why I always plan an escape in every room I enter. Just in case. Just in case I need to leave. And just in case I need to ensure it all still looks as casual as possible.

Anxiety is an invalid excuse. That is why I have 15 half-filled, failed prescriptions given to me to try and fix the hell inside my head. A third of which didn't work. Another third of which threw me into a deeper depression than I've ever known. Two of which gave me stomach pain so terrible the doctors were sure it was an ulcer. (It wasn't). And one of which put a demon inside my head after only the first half dose leaving me screaming on my bedroom floor, while my parents helplessly watched, crying and wondering how long until they needed to call 911.

Anxiety is an invalid excuse. College is the best years of your life. If you didn't enjoy it you did it wrong. Then why have I been so miserable? It was all basically picking my life at age 18 and having to stick with it by 23 because it's too late to change now and I've already spent thousands of dollars to google and teach myself all while being forced to sit in claustrophobic classes while my chest tightens until I can't breathe as I just concentrate on the floor tiles begging for the attack to be over.

Depression is an invalid excuse. How hard is it to reveal your deepest sorrows and inner sadness? To explain that there is no backing behind it, just a blanket of weight that engulfs your mind so heavily for no reason at all. Only to have someone say "it will be okay." Or "you just need to take some time to relax". Believe me. I wish it were that easy.

Depression is an invalid excuse. Especially when someone in your family has already gone through worse. With scars on her wrist to document it, how could I ever reveal the same. How could I ever bring such pain to my mother a second time? The answer is I couldn't. Perhaps the only thing keeping my wrist smooth is that hope to shield others from more pain. While I drown in my head from a hailstorm of terrifying unwanted thoughts.

Depression and anxiety are invalid excuses. That's why the school counseling center is understaffed and overbooked and my condition is not considered "critical enough" to be seen. Instead I am given a slip of paper with a list of local counselors and therapists who will charge $120 for 50 minutes, instead of getting help for free from the place that I pay tuition money to have access to.

Depression and anxiety are invalid excuses. That's why the school recommends submitting disability forms in regards to mental illness at least 3 months prior to each semester to “appropriately accommodate” making it impossible to keep up with the flow of paperwork required and the signatures and justifications to prove you are sick enough. When all you want to do is take a test in a separate room but the miles of hoops to jump through to get there make it impossible to achieve before the semester is through.

Anxiety and depression are invalid excuses. Because they can't be seen. There's nothing on my body that indicates they are there. No scars, no germs, no red flags associated with all other illness. My smile hides the sadness. My calm demeanor hides the chaos engulfing my brain. My healthy looking body and exercise habits hide my binge eating and self loathing for a body that constantly betrays me. Even the doctor says "Ohhhh quite the list of problems we have hmmm?" when looking at my record, ending the sentence with a pointed look that tells me she doesn't believe me at all.

Anxiety and depression are invalid excuses. I know this because I am too afraid to loose those I love by telling them what's really going on. Afraid they will be afraid of me, or worse label me crazy.

Anxiety and depression are invalid excuses. That's why I continue each day with a false brave face until maybe one day I won't have to anymore.

So I applied for extra hospital insurance. Aside from being pretty severely autistic, he's physically a pretty healthy kid, no major problems, no ongoing treatment. However, recently he needed to have a dental procedure, and they decided it was best that it be done in the hospital, and that he be fully knocked out. A few years back, he also needed to be knocked out for an MRI (he had a seizure, but none since). Anesthesia is expensive, and when he had the dental procedure, it maxed out the hospital coverage on my current plan and I got stuck with a $9000 bill. Hence, the decision for better hospital insurance. When applying for health insurance, they do 5 year medical records check, and those two things are going to come up. What's going to happen... My 17 year old son was driving his 2003 Ford Explorer, when he was hit by another vehicle. My son was approaching a stop light and traveling between 3-5 mph....The vehicle that struck him was a company work vehicle. The work truck was pulling out of a parking lot when he hit my son. His estimated speed was also 3-5 mph. There were no injuries at all, and there was no medical treatment sought. This all happened on April 10th 2011. It was found that driver of the work truck was at fault for inattention. Honestly, this guy was super nice and walked my son through the process of calling police etc til I could get there....Now dealing with the Companies insurance carrier has been a headache!!!! here is the basic timeline....Explorer still drivable....Had to wait 10 days for police report....contacted Company that owned work truck, and they forwarded me to their insurance co....Was advised to seek several estimates, and fax them over....Faxed over estimates to adjuster. All estimates exceeded 5k....Stated she would have to contact an adjuster from local area to work this. Local adjuster came out. Estimated damages to be 3300.00. Insurance Company sent me check for 3300.00 and advised me when vehicle repaired, auto shop would need to work with adjuster on any additional repairs and costs. Explorer was in shop 30 days before finally being totaled. Local adjuster was horrible to work with, did not communicate with body shop, etc. I finally contacted the insurance company, and told them I refused to deal wither contracted adjuster etc. Now that the vehicle has been totaled, they don't want to pay what I think is fair. The insurance company wants to settle for $6928 plus $367 for taxes. Clean retail for the Explorer is $8100. This is for my area. I have been car shopping for 2 days straight. can't find anything comparable with the money they gave me etc. I have taken off work to deal with this etc, been going on for 2 months plus, and Iam worn out with it all...All I want is for my kid to be back in a safe reliable vehicle. The insurance company did provide a rental car. I had to drive it, my son had to take my car, my other son had bought our car from us, but can't get it yet, because the other needs it for work school etc....I am so frustrated with the ins ompany""
