Hello welcome to yet another post that was 1) originally meant to be a short thing but it rapidly got out of hand 2) caters to me specifically 3) is all over the place because I kept finding more things I wanted to talk about

The way rui approaches emotions is so fascinating to me bc like. He approaches everything with a very rational/logical thought process instead of an emotional one and he tends to either ignore his emotions or view them as an obstacle/hinderance.

If he acknowledges that he’s upset or unhappy he tends to just go “oh well. What can you do.” & then berates himself for not wanting to be unhappy. I feel like a lot of that can be explained by his childhood alienation from his peers.

In RMD his reaction to his classmates refusing to take part in his play once he explained the tree jump stunt & them calling him weird is to blame himself:

Little Rui: Nene… No. That’s not it. I pushed my show onto everyone and bothered them.

Which is pretty telling. To Rui, the issue is that he asked for too much, that he as a person is something that must be tolerated by his peers.

But ultimately he still has faith that he’ll find his people.

Little Rui: …That’s right. People like you, Nene, who would say that they like my shows, surely exist out there. I want to make my own shows. But as of now - I think it might be a little hard.

And he *did* keep trying to find people who would accept him for a while - Wonder Halloween shows that he continued to try to reach out even after the stuff that happened in RMD, but eventually anyone he got a little close to would end up leaving & reinforcing his idea that he was too different from others to form relationships.

I’ve seen some people say him giving up on forming relationships was due to the events shown in RMD, but I think it was more of a result of him experiencing the same rejection over and over again. The definition of insanity is trying over and over again when the result never changes, and despite what his peers may think, Rui is not insane. I think he gradually lost faith in his parents assurance that he would find people who accepted him - he begins pushing Nene, the only person who hasn’t left him yet, away.

Why he pushed Nene away is sort of left up to interpretation - To protect her from himself? To leave her before she left like everyone else? - but I think the assumption that her invitation is out of pity show that at least part of his decision to push her away was out of the belief that she, like everyone else, was simply tolerating him. If he assumes everyone hates him/is scared of him right off the bat, he can avoid getting his hopes up and being crushed when he’s inevitably abandoned. It’s not unhealthy or detrimental to forming relationships he’s just recognizing a pattern and using it to predict the behavior of others (blatantly wrong).

2) if he’s incompatible with other people, there’s no reason to get his hopes up because he’ll never find people he fits in with

3) if nothing is ever going to get better, he should be content with being alone. There’s no reason to be sad over a fact of life. It is what it is.

4) being sad over this is inconvenient, unhelpful, and a distraction from following his dreams (on his own)

5) inflicting himself onto others is a selfish desire and he should just keep to himself. “It’s for the best, anyway.”

6) he’s perfectly fine on his own. He doesn’t need anyone for his shows, and he doesn’t need friends.

By the time the WXS main story takes place, he’s already fully convinced himself that he’s better off alone, and that Actually It’s Super Beneficial For Him & His Shows And He’s Fine Like This.

I’m probably going to talk about his continued pushing of Tsukasa’s limits/suggesting insane stunts and over emphasizing how dangerous they are at a later date - and how that was (imo) an attempt to find the point where Tsukasa would hate and leave him too -

(surely this is too good to be true, Tsukasa/wxs will be like all the others -> wait he’s not calling me a freak and leaving ok I guess I’ll go full throttle on the insane shit surely at some point he’ll get tired of me -> he got injured because of me and he’s still here?? what the fuck???? Unfortunately humans are a social species & emotions don’t follow (faulty) logic so rui *was* unhappy on his own and he *did* want to have friends. Which I’m sure he continued to call himself selfish/greedy for feeling. Rationalizing all of this was a way he could accept/make peace with being miserable (because it must be this way, because this is how it will always be).

Rui: I was the same a long time ago… I gave up on fitting in with anyone.

Rui: - in reality, I really did want to put on a show with someone else. But people didn’t understand the shows I was making. On a subconscious level, I convinced myself it wasn’t going to work out and gave up on the idea.

This added scene from the main story animation adds to this - why he leaves WXS did have to do with Tsukasa yelling at Nene, but the reason he doesn’t come back after Nene forgives Tsukasa is because Tsukasa’s self centered attitude is something that antithetical to a belief that Rui thought he’d given up on a long time ago: great shows *can’t* be made alone, no matter how many times you insist that you don’t need anyone else. As much as he denied it, Rui *did* still want to connect with people and be accepted - not just for the purpose of making shows, but to have a place where he belonged. For the first time in years Rui got his hopes up, started believing in what his parents told him, and Tsukasa proved to him that he never should have done so in the first place. Unlike the other times, though, Rui is the one to walk away first. & then tsukasa/wxs do the whole “true feelings” show etc etc we know how the main story ends.

That being said, I think that Rui still subconsciously believed WXS would grow to hate him and leave because he would finally be Too Much. Wonder Halloween showed him that this wasn’t true (Which is why it’s so important that the zombie plushies in the world link performed potato ghost to connect to the other plushies - it’s the show that was performed when Rui fully realized that wxs was not going to abandon him.) but I feel like that only cemented the fact that wxs would keep performing alongside him, not that they were his friends.

Rui also very clearly did not process or evaluate how his childhood impacted him.

Nene: When you talked about the old days, you seemed happy.

Rui: fufu. I don’t mind it anymore because it was so long ago.

After so long by himself, with shows as the only thing he had, I think that having a connection to people *outside* of shows was completely unfathomable to Rui.

Which is why he’s kind of incapable of realizing why the idea of leaving wxs hurts him so much,

I make fun of him for taking a year to finally be like “yeah tsukasa-kun and I are friends” but I think it’s pretty reasonable taking his trust/abandonment issues into account. Accepting Tsukasa’s offer to join wxs (twice) changed his life drastically - he realizes that he can connect to others outside of shows, that it’s possible for him to form relationships with people outside of wxs. Rui just needed to make the choice to accept the outreached hands - not changing the parts of himself that people previously deemed too weird or strange (not that he was ever going to do that anyways) but changing his attitude of “it’s just impossible for me to be accepted.”

Rui: I had always thought that I could never properly understand everyone around me.

Rui: as I started doing shows at Wonder Stage with everyone, my way of thinking and feelings began to change.

Rui: now, I am able to understand and connect with someone without relying on shows, and I’ve come to value the beauty of laughing alongside others

This is also why he tends to berate himself for having the very normal desire to hold on to wxs. He’s never had something like this before, where he has people who accept and love him as he is. He’s never wanted to keep something as badly as this. He’s asking too much of them, he’s imposing like he did with his classmates in RMD, he should let them leave. It’s the mature thing to do. He spent so long on his own, he should be fine going back to that, isn’t it selfish and greedy to want more?

I think that, in future events, he’ll (hopefully) come to realize there are more people who will accept him (& get more trust ranks. Please.). I think it’s an impossible ask for him to be completely fine with wxs going their separate ways some day (and the same goes for everyone else in wxs), but I think when the time comes it will at least be bittersweet and with the knowledge that he can find other places to belong & that his relationships with the rest of wxs is strong enough to withstand not being in the same troupe. Things can’t stay the same forever, but change doesn’t have to be bad. Etc etc.

Why does W×S main story have to be the first and the last in the timeline?

sorry for the late response, i've had so many asks over the last few days that these ended up getting buried under about 30 others.

It's mentioned in the WxS main story that the failed debut play was on the first day of the school holidays. By process of elimination this is most likely summer break (the story is some time after the start of the school year, and before christmas). Their main story also only takes place over a very short period of time compared to most of the others.

Saki and Haruka both started regularly attending school at the same time. According to STEP by STEP!, the transfer windows to and from the credit course are the start and midway point of the school year. Haruka would've transferred at the start of the year, so that's when Saki transferred too. This is a retcon though since the actual main story seems to suggest that Haruka transferred partway through the year.

Haruka is stated to be 16 in the main story but that's just because all 1st years are 16 regardless of birthday due to the timeloop so I'm not taking it as an indicator of when the MMJ story is set

However if you want to count it and say that the MMJ story is after October 5th, it pushes the WxS story into the winter holidays.

Also in the WxS main story opening it's stated that Saki has just started school, placing WxS and L/n main stories at the same time (though as stated, WxS has the shorter story)

In Kohane's initial 1* story, she mentions to Minori that a new troupe has recently begun performing at PXL (they have performed multiple shows by this point). It is also mentioned that Minori has recently become friends with Haruka and that Kohane is meeting with someone from another school (presumably An). Kohane has not cut her hair by this point.

But also according to Toya's initial 3* story, BAD DOGS split up before Saki has gone to school, which means no L/n, no MMJ, and no WxS. Given the whole 'transfer at the start of the year' retcon, it also means that no one in VBS should be in high school lol

So if that's too complicated here's the order of main story events according to the main stories and initial card stories:

Saki starts school, Haruka transfers course, Rui transfers school. L/n and MMJ main stories start.

Tsukasa attends his audition for PXL. WxS main story starts.

thanks VBS writers. WxS has to finish before the formation of MMJ, L/n, and VBS, but also WxS (and by extension, L/n and MMJ) have to not even have their stories started when BAD DOGS splits up just before the end of the VBS story. so WxS is either the 3rd story to start and 1st to finish, or last story to start and finish. I didn't forget about N25 but they can do basically whatever they want bc they don't impact the other stories.

summary of rui’s wl chapter cause it made me ueuueueeu (spoilers ahead)

so the first chapter opens with wxs discovering a new island in wonderland sekai. they need to find the map to "star island" and then they see a phoenix soaring above with this very map. i forget if the phoenix like. already had it or they snatched it, wxs then decide to go on a quest to find the phoenix and get the map back. to do this they must journey the island, so they set off!

(rui's chapter begins) the first place they encounter is a village of plushies, and along with them, some "zombie plushies”. we learn that the zombie plushies are outcasted from the others because they're "scary and weird", and rui immediately motions to go meet the zombies. they meet them and it turns out they greet by biting lol, but rui isn’t put off at all, and bites back. everyone introduces themselves, then asks the zombies if they knew about the phoenix. the zombies refuse to give information because they think the others might be faking kindness, and are probably scared of them like everyone else, and they don't want to help people who "hate them", so they run away. rui kind of pauses for a moment, and rin asks what's wrong, and rui says that their words resonated with him, because the plushies remind him of his old self. (pl end)

after this rui says that he can tell that the zombies really do want to make friends, they’ve just been rejected so many times they’ve given up, like he did. he then says he wants to make them realize their dreams and make them come true, like wxs did for him.

the gang approach the zombies and rui suggests the zombies do a play to convey their feelings. it is settled to do an altered version of “potato ghost”, the show from wonder halloween, and the zombies take the role of well. the zombies. they play around and show the plushies they’re not scary, and that actually being a zombie is fun. the others plushies see this, and start to befriend the zombies.

rui watches this unfold and he’s so happy he was able to help the zombies, and see their true desires. he pops out a tom gray quote reference about breaking down the barriers of people’s hearts and i died a bit.

the gang finds a new clue for the phoenix via the zombies. and we move on.

this is literally everything i could have asked for in his chapter i maybe cried a bit. i love you rui kamishiro.

hl really is so boring. like it was fun in the moment when reading the novel for the first time but then there’s a post-novel clarity where its like huh the relationship is actually so shallow. idk how ppl can compare hl and wx and think hl is better (even tho novel wx has major issues too). but comparing it to cql wx? its not even a competition, cql wx wins by far 💀

for REAL. hualian's big strength is that they have fabulous chemistry. every scene with them together is genuinely really fun and silly and I can tell very easily how much they care about each other, which is why despite my griping I actually do enjoy a lot of the romance scenes in the book. but if you're looking for something deeper, or even something real....it's just not there. it's all fantasy and idealization and hyper-devotion to the point where you have literally nothing else in your life that you care about or think makes life worth living. hc giving xl his ashes and saying essentially 'if you die, there's no point to me living' is actually really sad. xl inspired a traumatized child to live and then instead of actually living his life that child just devoted himself to xl utterly...it's just a self-fulfilling loop. hc never found anything else that he cared about or loved or was passionate about to really live for. he died for xl MULTIPLE times and he never appreciated his existence beyond xl's presence, which is honestly one of the most depressing endings a traumatized child can have

also you're so right when you say it's shallow. hc like 'gege is absolutely perfect and beyond reproach' and xl is like 'hc is so funny and we get along so well' and sure you have the dramatic "I saved your life/I'll kill for you' backstory but that didn't make it more interesting, it's just made it more dramatic. their principles, their morals, their life experiences, their perspectives and goals and respective places in life - it's not that those things are incompatible in the relationship, they're just irrelevant to the relationship. so like...what does any of this matter besides 'well they're happy now!' I personally like when characters care about each other for actual reasons that tie into the themes of the stoy

and yeah, despite its issues novel wx was extremely compelling and their dynamic for the most part made sense bc they complemented each other rly well and there were such good romantic scenes in the book i shan't lie. and like if two characters have never actually had to deal with genuine issues in their relationship because they just accept the other as perfect the way they are, its a very fragile and unstable dynamic because they have no idea how to resolve conflict or come to terms with being angry at each other. yet another reason wangxian is so much more stable and rewarding than hualian. they know what it's like to truly be opposed to each other, disagree with each other, hurt each other, and they found a resolution to that. not that they're perfect but in comparison, they've put in the work

and comparing hl to cql wx is really funny to me actually. real hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby situation in terms of like...themes...knowing each other...growing as people together...living meaningful lives...yeah idk how mdzs/cql fans moved on the tgcf and got into the romance because it's so much more simplistic and, imo, unappealing

Oh trust me, I was excited for Tsukasa5 being limited as well (multiple reasons, aside from what you've said: while I understand the reasoning behind this set being lim, I genuinely wish it wasn't because it'll likely lock side stories and generally nice story moments from some players forever which is unfair, and I don't think shouldn't have been lim in the same way Canary event or Our Happy Ending or Saying Goodbye to My persona weren't; I'm also pissed off by, as I already said, VERY BAD TERRIBLE NO GOOD precedent for the greedy and unfair gacha this banner sets up). It's majorly messed up from Sega's part to do that with him, but it's not because they hate WxS as characters or something, it's because they know they can put a limited event, a WLE (semi-limited) and then a fan-favourite unlimited banner and still get profit from all of it, possibly more than they would if the distribution was better. It's not them hating WxS fans (if anything, VBS fans are more screwed), it's just corporate greed that we need to stop personifying.

I guess I'm just majorly disappointed, more even in the VBS fans being... Like this than the outside reaction. VBS have always been a running joke withing the fandom let's be honest, not a lot of people take them and their (very interesting) themes seriously at all (which is partially why LUtF had so much backlash for suddenly getting serious as if VBS weren't already that). Others' reaction to The Event was always something that I could predict, the amplification of it by the malicious planning is unfortunate but understandable. It's the in-fandom panic and the discovery that people who claim to be fans genuinely do not read the events, do not read the events' synopsis, the events' short summaries and then proceed to have insane takes and spread them as truth that got me upset the most I think lol.

That said my rage is amplified a lot here, mostly for laughs. I am majorly annoyed and miffed because I was expecting at least the VBS fans to be hyped and excited so we could all celebrate, but oh well. Forgot I have different definition of "a fan of a unit" than 90% of the fandom. I still know a lot of people who are on the same wavelength as me and we can get hyped together though, so like I said, it doesn't upset me too much, just makes me want to whack some people with a comically oversized hammer. I'll be just fine.

Going to Akito may not have been the best idea, especially considering how he was with romance anyway, but he was his best friend! Surely he'd have good advice

It was a shame that Akito was almost just as clueless as Toya was. He had overheard something from a novel Mizuki was talking about, maybe that could work?

He gives Toya the advice he heard, and Toya latches onto it immediately. He really had nothing to check it against, and it seemed like it could work well anyway!

He asks to talk to you after class, and when you go to meet him, he has a box of your favorite snacks in hand. What was going on?

1- everyone except nene does, starting off!! given everything thats gone on with her, pre-main story she still can’t get herself to sing anymore, even for online songs where she isn’t performing in front of an actual in person audience. after main story she gets more resolve, and she does take some time to start singing again, but with her very supportive friends she starts to find her confidence in singing again :) (can i mention how overjoyed rui gets about it. can i mention how much he missed her voice. can i mention how AGAIN he is filled with so much guilt around how the sound of her singing coming from her room was replaced by suffocating silence after what happened. can i mention how genuinely happy for her and proud of her he is, that despite it all, that maybe they really do have a chance here, all together. sorry i’m insane about rui and that doesn’t change here.)

2- i’ve been debating on whether or not they start filming their shows at the closed off wonder stage actually! they do start off filming in sekai at least. i think both areas have their pros and cons, so they might end up alternating. not sure yet.

3- tsukasa and toya’s relationship have stayed the same, and same with saki. tsukasa’s past has actually stayed practically the same in general. i haven’t changed much about his.

mizurui on the other hand. ohohohohohohoho. fun fact i was brainrotting specifically about swap au mizurui a lot a while ago. bc this au co exists with wxs-ified n25. dont look at the old tag i had for them please. i want to fix them cause i have more stuff i want to add and like. do it better. but i haven’t gotten around to it. all you need to know is n25 now does theater shows together instead. yahoo. anyway i think about swap au mizurui a lot. because. augh. their relationship has stayed very similar to canon, being lonely outcasts who found each other on that rooftop, but it makes me ill bc. rui introduces mizuki to theater and shows. he might not do them anymore but he sometimes talks about them with mizuki and mizuki can see the love he had for them and they get curious. and they give it a try and find so much joy into doing shows and being able to express themselves on stage with less judgement while they act and finding people who DO accept them and while they’re not able to stay long it gives them hope, that there are people who will accept them as they are, and if mizuki’s lucky they won’t even lose them. like. rui who was so hurt by theater and things that happened with it and mizuki who finds so much comfort and hope in it. are you hearing me.

4- through the power of luck none of them really get discovered. i think the one thats the most likely to be recognized is tsukasa though, maybe with saki or toya stumbling upon one of their videos.

HIIIIII nws i love when ppl ask me abt my aus :D i was planning on writing it at some point but the prsk hyperfixation has faded juuust enough that i don't think i could do it now shdjdhfjhd anyways all of this to say im gonna explain the whole plot (of ch1. i lost steam so bad) to you now. hits you with my autism beam

so! starting with the basic facts this au is a saki protag. i noticed she dies in pretty much every dgr au (usually really early) and i love her so that rly pissed me off and that's what motivated me to make this au LMAOOO anyways the supports are tsukasa and toya because i am just a liiiittle insane abt the tenma siblings

nothing Particularly Interesting happens in the prologue except for the miku design drop. she's got elements from every sekai's Miku, one pigtail is dark pink like l/n's miku and one is her regular green like mmj's miku. her hair is twisted like vbs miku and her voicebank/tuning is in the style of wxs miku. also she's got heterochromia and different height socks like niigo miku. also this wasn't in the prologue (because i did actually write it) but everyone's tablets have a dm feature so they're basically just phones except they don't let ppl out of the sekai. also also wasn't in the prologue but important detail that it's against the rules to go in someone's else's room even if they have the door unlocked/open unless they give you explicit permission OR they're in some way incapacitated (passed out/dead). all the other rules are pretty much the same from previous dgr games

chapter one time!!! this one is Sad. they're all sad actually dgdhdhdjdh anyways so the motive for this chapter is like a million dollars. and everyone agrees that's a stupid motive and none of them would kill for money. nobody's gonna kill anyone we're better that that ‼️‼️‼️ <- moments before disaster. anyways so all the money is in a giant cube in the gym and a few people talk abt how just having it so out there in the open could entice people. and minori is not having that at all so she gets shiho to help her take this massive box from the closet that's on the second floor of the dorms. the box doesn't actually weigh that much so minori lifts it on her own and instead gets shiho to stand just a few steps down on the stairs and guide her down since she can't find a way to fit the box down the stairs when she's facing frontwards. but when she takes the first step down backwards she slips and falls down the stairs, knocking shiho down with her. the fall breaks shiho's neck, killing her pretty much instantly. it also breaks several of minori's bones, so she takes more painkillers than she should and is really really Weird for the entirety of the investigation because of it.

she doesn't make like. a huge effort to hide that she killed shiho because she was planning to confess, but she doesn't end up doing that because at the start of the trial miku is like "oh btw if you're the murderer and you get caught you get executed lol" and minori just. can't make herself do it bc of the Fear. i think if everyone hadn't figured it out she would've ended up confessing to save haruka and all her friends but everyone did figure it out so she didn't have to do that.

in minori's execution she's got wings like icarus (held together by wax) and she's flying over the ocean. she's still hallucinating from the painkillers so she thinks the glow from the sun is a bunch of glowsticks that are in her color so she flies towards it. the wings melt and she falls into the ocean. minori can usually swim but between the broken bones and the current of the sea she can't keep herself afloat and drowns. and that's the end of chapter one :)

a part of her feels empty and she becomes more agitated than usual and ends up spending more money on shopping trips to cope, but no worries! mizuki’s there to make sure she doesnt spend ‘too’ much

she ends up typing up paragraphs off of how much she loves and misses you at the dead of night once her session with n25’s over but ends up deleting it (you only really have luck in seeing it if you have notifications on…)

when youre fully back she tries to act like she didn’t care that much but how touchy and needy she is says other wise! make sure to give her affection and a souvenir once you’re back!

haruka fully understands with low contact as she always had to travel because of her work as an idol so she isnt as pushy as ena or emu

of course, shes still sad! she barely gets to see you and she got into the habit of facetiming or meeting up with you after practice with the rest of more more jump!

shes happy that you have time to relax and finds herself wondering and curious as to what youre doing and day dreaming about the amount of joy youre having late at night, the price she’d pay to see you so happy is expensive

once youre back she gives you a big welcome and invites you on more dates and hangouts to make up for the lost time!

since shes really touchy not being able to be able to hug or even talk to you that much is breaking her

I saw some people saying there might be a perm mixed before l/n wl which would give wxs a lim, do you think that could happen? 6 days (9th to 15th) seems too short for an event in general as well though. Alternatively there could be an emu lim event at the end of the month but the l/n wl is there so there isn't back to back emu cards I think.

Tsukasa5 is definitely the perm slot after Over Rad Squad (1 week events have been happening for the entire time wles have been around, and almost all of them have been wxs events lol), but I could see Emu mixed at the end of the month happening. I think now it's a perm banner that Emu is pretty likely for Tsukasa5 (given that last rota she and Tsukasa got no rateups outside their own banners), so L/n WLE could bridge the gap between the events. Like i assumed previously it was bc there would be a leoneed lim in this slot, but apparently not, so there probably is some other reason that the leoni wle is in late july. Putting a gap between two emu 4*s would make sense. Unfortunately it wouldnt be miya 2-B but it's getting kinda dire on Emu needing that mixed event.

And just to shove my other tsukasa5 lineup predictions here I think the other 4* will be vsinger and Nene 3* Rui 2*.

Honestly, i dont remember where the wen siblings were in canon when Jiggy was in Nightless city, but for fic sake, theyre there now. Wen Yao meets Wen qing, and while there is a lot of mutual suspicion they... get along? Theyre not best friends, but they help each other. Wen Qing shows Yaoyao how he can heal/help his own wounds and pain and also like. Basic biology stuff. That concept has already been there in a few wen yao fics i think?

Anyways i adore the headcanon that Wen yuan is Wen Xus son, so we r sticking with that!

Wen Yao is there for the birth! *waves hand around* he knows the mother (not sure yet if she'll be from the dafan wen or like. Just there.) And has been keeping her company through the last bits of her pregnancy, esp when WQ wasnt there to do it. Since he has thr experience from the brothel in hoth working with pregnant women but also birth? Something like that.

so when A-Yuans mother dies and WX is gone as well, when Wen Yao isnt working/actively doused in blood, he helps take care of A-Yuan and supervises the time WRH spends with his grandson.

So when WRHs state gets insanely bad, Wen yao is the one saying "maybe you should send a-yuan with Wen qing away so nothing happens to them,with all the fighting going on? :(" and WRH agrees!

During the last bit Wen yao doesnt see Wen qing nor a-yuan.

Are you there? Last week you asked about fics that I would like to see as real books (and also for high-quality recs), and I'm able to answer you now! I wrote a lot so it's going under the cut

Honestly I mostly rbed that post out of a brief amusement over a hypothetical bc I don't think fanfic and original stories really scratch the same itch or even draw on the same skills so I am happy to keep them separated. And if I love a work for being about wx, I don't think I'd like it if it was revamped to be about original characters. I don't think most fanfic authors (who are primarily hobbyists) have the writing skill to craft really good original fiction, and that's fine! I do know for a fact at least one writer whose fics are in my rec list IS a published author and I know that her book sucks. it has got to suck with prose like that

BUT. if there was one who DID write well enough that their work could be published. Glyphic of See You Yesterday fame I have absolute faith in. The worldbuilding, while based off canon, is complex and well-developed, the plot is drawn-out but absolutely riveting, the character work is rich enough that I can see them creating compelling original characters, and the prose is gut-wrenching. If that author released a real book with a premise I had interest in, I would buy it and expect it to be good bc that fic is so delicious and I have complete faith in their ability to create original content. and it would be a finished product so I could FINISH IT without FALLING INTO DESPAIR unlike my current relationship with syy

And yes it is in my fic rec list! Each fic has a little summary and I usually say whether it's decent quality or not, plus my favorites are starred. I'd say check out Section One for all the best wangxian stuff, but See you Yesterday's entry is in Section Four

But for specifically high-quality wx/excellent writing, here are the highlights. Please keep in mind I prefer happy endings but I do tend to gravitate towards dark content since I think it captures canon themes the best, so many of these comes with hefty trigger warnings that you can see under their entries on my rec page. *feast and famine by luckymarrow - extremely high-quality writing, including wx writing, but huge tw for sexual assault. like. that's the plot of the fic

*places under the sky by narie - lots of wwx family backstory! it hurt me so bad is all and I can never read it again

*总有一天; a place to hide (can’t find one near)* by yiqie - shaky and corny writing here and there, but overall a lovely story with some geniunely riveting passages. one of my older faves. tw for suicide attempt

*As a Shadow, As a Dream* by balmandbitterness - some creepy magic post-nghtless city keeps lwj and wwx in contact. spooky, but tender and comforting even so. and I love the ending

*somewhere they live, somewhere they multiply by perilously - spooky! let's get this married couple some therapy

the low sky, raining over by chibilwj (thelogicoftaste) - very unusual fic, this one. postcanon kidfic but the kid is maybe cursed

*Close Your Soft Eyes* by timetoboldlygo - just REALLY lovely and mature wx

Where the Lonely Ones Go by CSHfic, VSfic - really cute postcanon casefic with a haunted baby girl wx sort of adopt

From Section Two:

his hands keep turning to birds and flying away from him (him being you) by zerodignity - the first part of a series where wwx isn't cis but also doesn't have the words to describe himself. the wx in the second work in this series rules

From Section Four:

*hide fox, and all after* by blackfeather (oogenesis) - not wx, but I AM in love with the worldbuilding and I think the attention given to a tertiary character (mxy) shows a strength in original writing that you wouldn't necessarily see if someone was only writing main characters who already have personalities, backstories, etc.

*a tide in two seas by occultings (microcomets) - this one was wild

counterpart by queensmooting - similar concept to the above. also wild

*strangers on the shore by seularen - spy fic but not a bootlicking kind, just really well-researched and tense and elaborate

From Section Five:

*To Love Mountains* by HerenorThereNearnorFar - not wx, but the backstories of all the parents is SO fascinating I love you cssr

*Marital Prospects* by Vamillepudding - not particularly high-quality writing in any sense except for the fact that this author has posted some of the funniest things I have ever read and that's got to count for something. see also The Shape of Your Love (is Horny) (found in section six)

From Section Six (heed warnings abt the authors!)

*A Lot of Edges Called Perhaps* by hansbekhart - honest to god obsessed with the wx in this one
