Story

Frost wakes up after being magically pulled from a frozen pond, carrying no memory as to how he’d ended up there or any life before that. The moon names him Frost. Frost is an immortalized sixteen year old.

Frost is thrilled at first, seeing that he has a sort of magic that he can control through a hook shaped stick he finds beside the frozen pond. But he quickly discovers that he is invisible to the word and people can walk straight through him, leaving him completely alone in the world.

Three hundred years later in the middle of spring, Santa Claus, more affectionately known to his friends and elves as Jack Kelly, his birth name, is making toys and preparing for next Christmas. Yes he has sleeve tattoos, yes he’s only actually twenty six (though technically he’s been alive for hundreds of years) and yes he’s still a big goofball who happens to be a badass.

His elves rush in and scream that something’s wrong. When Jack rushes out, he finds his map being engulfed in black dust. He believes it to be a warning from the man in the moon who chose him to be a guardian. He believes that it means The Boogeyman is coming back.

He summons the rest of the guardians.

Katherine, known to the world as the tooth fairy, arrives first. She looks just like a regular woman. She where’s brightly colored clothes and has wings though and she wears a colorful mask. Her helpers look like the little fairies in the movie though, including Smalls, who is Baby Tooth. Katherine and Jack have a bit of a history. She’s twenty seven.

Then comes Crutchie, the sandman. He’s missing a leg and is mute, but can communicate through pictures of sand that appear above his head. Jack and Crutchie are very close. Crutchie loves to hang around the North Pole in between sending dreams to the kids of the world. He can get around by floating on magic sand, but sometimes he makes himself a crutch to get around. He’s nineteen.

Lastly, Spot. Jack calls him that because of the way he paints his eggs. Eventually, it just stuck. He’s not really a bunny, but he’s still a magical being who uses bunnies to help him with his holiday. He is a tough guy. Him and Jack are often competing to see who’s the tougher of them. He uses a boomerang as a weapon and is very fast. He looks very intimidating at first, but once someone becomes his friend he’s fiercely protective of them. He’s twenty six.

Anyways, the moon tells them once they’re all there that there is going to be a new guardian.

Frost.

The guardians are a bit surprised at this as Frost is very immature and has pulled pranks on every one of them.

But Jack tells them that’s what the moon’s saying, so it’s what has to happen.

Meanwhile, Frost, or Race as he’s known by Jack and some other magical beings who caught him many times trying to mess with his elves but was too quick for him to catch, is messing around with some kids, overall spreading joy and happiness, even though the kids still don’t believe in him.

He actually ends up with a big group of kids. Specifically one Les Jacobs and his friends. Les is nine, and still believes in Santa and all of them despite his friends not.

Race starts a snowball fight between Les and his friends, getting them to laugh and smile for a good while before Les loses a tooth and goes to put it under his pillow for the tooth fairy.

Race is disappointed that people still don’t believe in him, but he watches over the Jacobs house until the sandman starts sending out his dreams.

He follows one until he ends up in an alley where he’s cornered by Spot who mentions to him that he’s still made at Race for his last prank. Race tries to laugh it off and go, but he’s stuffed into Santa’s bag and taken against his will.

When he’s released, he finds he’s in Jack’s office and the guardians are all around him, trying to officially swear him in as a guardian.

Race tries to run, but Jack grabs him and brings him back. Race says he doesn’t want to be a guardian because he just likes to have fun and he doesn’t want to be held up with responsibilities.

Jack tried to explain to him that they were all chosen for a reason. He tells Race a little about his past. How he was just a boy who used to steal and gather money for the kids in his village and give them presents to put a smile on their face. How he was poor and had nothing but made sure the other kids always had something. He says that’s why he was chosen.

Before Race can ask any questions, the tooth fairies helpers send out a signal for help. So Jack gets everyone on his sleigh to take them there.

Spot hates riding in Jack’s sleigh as he’s terrified of heights and would much rather travel by rabbit tunnel. But Jack doesn’t give him a choice and Race teases him about it the whole time by jumping off and around the sleigh, joking that Spot cared when he thought Race had fallen from the sleigh.

When they arrive at “Tooth Palace” the guardians find that the place has been destroyed. They’re attacked by a swarm of nightmares who are kidnapping all the fairies and taking every single tooth that had been stored for safekeeping. While they’re being attacked, Race manages to catch one of the nightmares and save a single fairy.

Smalls.

The boogeyman, dubbed The Spider by Jack, confronts them then and there, believing Race to be a neutral party since no kids believe in him. He then tells the official guardians that he plans to destroy children’s belief in all of them, thereby making them disappear completely. Katherine begins to feel a bit weak. The boogeyman explains that it’s because children were waking up on one side of the world and realizing that no fairy had replaced their tooth with any kind of gift that night. Jack has to catch her as her wings give out a little bit.

Spider warns Race against staying with them because they obviously lied to him about what it really means to be a guardian, that being, if kids stop believing in them, they aren’t just invisible, they cease to exist. This prompts Spot to throw a boomerang at him, going to attack him as Jack grabs a couple of knives and goes at him too.

But Spider gets away.

Katherine is heartbroken. She goes a little frantic trying to find any one of her fairies that are left. Race hands her Smalls and Katherine calms, but only slightly. She then explains to Race that the teeth they kept weren’t just teeth. They held memories. Whenever someone needed a reminder of something, the fairies would help them remember. She explains that she was just a normal girl in her past life. She came from a wealthy family but was surrounded by others who had nothing, so her goal was to get them to smile, always. She tells them that when they were in the midst of a good moment, to close their eyes and hold onto it for as long as they could and when they opened their eyes, there would be a gift waiting there for them.

She explains to Race that she even had his memories from his past life which makes Race pause because he believed he didn’t have a past life. She assures him he did and Race makes it his mission to find his lost tooth to regain his memories.

Though the group knows danger is coming, Race can’t help but notice they all seem to be hopeful still, making jokes and messing with each other like normal as they try to come up with a plan to save themselves and protect the children.

Katherine states that there’s still one side of the world that hasn’t woken up yet. Without the help of the fairies, the only people left to do it are all of them.

So they go.

Jack and Spot create a competition to see who can get the most teeth the fastest, pulling Crutchie and Race both in as Jack is determined to make this at least a little fun. They try to cheat to get around each other, using their own entrances and magic to get by. Race is much more competitive with Spot than with anyone else, in fact, him and Jack team up to beat Spot.

They make a pretty good team.

But they forget to leave gifts under the kids pillows.

So they make a game out of going back through and doing just that.

Jack wins.

And they all end up in the room of one Les Jacobs.

Race catches up with Kath there first. She tells him she hasn’t been out in the field for over four hundred years and she can’t remember why she stopped. It’s not until the others join them that they get too loud and Les wakes up.

Les is amazed at the sight of them, especially Jack. But he still can’t see Race.

Before Les can say anything, his dog jumps up on his bed, growling at all of them, but mostly Spot who insists he can handle a puppy. Race isn’t so sure. So he sets off Les's alarm clock, startling the dog and laughing as it attacks Spot. Spot tells Crutchie to knock the thing out and Crutchie tries, aiming but missing, instead hitting Kath and Jack first with his magic and then Spot before he can calm the dog and put Les back to sleep.

Race is still slightly amused until he hears Spider laughing.

Les’s letting brother Elmer, only four, sneaks into the room and uses Jack’s magic ball to transport somewhere without anyone knowing.

Crutchie and Race are forced to face him alone. They’re lured out into the street where Spider summons his army of nightmares and attacks them with it, explaining to Crutchie that he stole the concept of his magic, taking the good dreams and turning them into nightmares. Race manages to freeze a few nightmares, but they’re no match for the big army and Crutchie ends up struggling to get away.

The rest of the gang tries to catch up to them, only for Spider to get Crutchie and infect him with bad dreams forcing him to give up and dissolve into nothing.

Race screams for him but can’t do anything to stop it.

They watch as Crutchie dies and Spider only laughs at them.

They go back to the North Pole where they make a small shrine for Crutchie. It’s the first time in three hundred years that Race sees Spot cry.

Though the group is upset and frustrated, Spot makes it known that Easter is still in a few days and they have to go get ready for it. He hopes it’ll bring everyone’s spirits up.

Jack offers to take the sled again, but Spot says since it’s his turf, it’s his way or no way, just as he taps his foot on the ground and creates a rabbit hole without warning and they all fall down into it.

Once they get there, Spot notes that something’s wrong.

They all gear up for a fight until they realize that it’s just a tiny little boy. Elmer. Les’s little brother.

None of them have any idea what to do, except for Race who tells them that they live everyday working for kids. Kath tries to talk to Elmer but ends up scaring him even more so Race tells Spot to give it a try.

Spot is mortified. But he walks over to the scared child and Race throws a snowball at him, spreading the joy of winter onto him and Spot immediately knows what to do to calm Elmer down, taking the kid into his arms and asking if Elmer wanted to help him paint Easter eggs.

All of the guardians help watch Elmer while they all paint eggs and get ready to hide them until Elmer eventually falls asleep in Spot’s arms.

Race promises to take Elmer back home and return before Spider comes back even though Spot asks him to stay in case there’s another attack on them.

He goes anyway, putting Elmer back to bed with the help of Smalls before he hears someone calling for someone named Antonio. He knows he’s heard it before. So he follows it falling into Spider’s lair where he finds all the fairies and is ambushed by Spider who gives him a pretty decent beating and taunts him with the fact that his greatest fear is that no one will ever believe in him. While they’re arguing, Race manages to swipe his tooth and his memories.

Spider manages to distract him long enough to capture Smalls and let his nightmares destroy all of the Easter eggs Spot and the others painted and hid, ruining Easter and causing the world to lose faith in Spot, making him invisible to the world.

Race tries to beg forgiveness, trying to explain, but Spot can’t hear him out and walks away. Jack tries to comfort him but Katherine pulls him away.

So Race runs away to Antarctica, hiding out for a little bit until Spider finds him. The boogeyman tries to convince him to join his side, but Race refuses. So Snyder turns against him immediately, hreatening to kill Smalls unless Race gives up his staff. After a long moment of hesitance, Race gives it up and demands Spider give him back Smalls. But Spider refuses, moving to take Smalls with him until she bites him and flies back to Race.

Spider snaps Race’s staff in half, causing Race to feel physical pain. Before he can recover, Spider throws him into an icy pit and throws his staff in after him. And Race cries for a minute, hugging Smalls to him until she wiggles out of his grasp and gets into his sweatshirt pocket while Race sobs about never doing anything right and ruining everything he touches. He thinks Smalls is just hiding for warmth until the container with his memories inside is placed in his hand.

Smalls prompts him to open it.

Eventually he does.

And it all comes back to him.

He remembers a boy that looks just like him with brown hair and brown eyes. It takes him a while to remember that it was him.

He remembers making kids laugh and having fun with them even when things seemed bleak.

And he remembered the day he died.

He did it to save his brother’s life.

Romeo.

He told him they were going to have a little fun instead of Romeo falling through ice.

He used the staff to throw Romeo to safety and fell in himself.

That’s when the moon chose him.

After this, Race is ecstatic. He’s smiling and laughing and happy because he understands now. He remembers his family. So he takes his staff and forces it back together with his magic and chases after Spider, Smalls on his shoulder all the way.

He goes back to Spider’s lair and tries to free the fairies only for them to be unable to fly because none of the kids believe in them. All but one have lost hope and Race knows immediately where to go.

Finding Les all alone in his room, his faith fading fast, he makes it snow the boy’s bedroom, drawing in frost on his window of Easter eggs and Christmas presents.

Les recalls the name of someone his brother mentioned once. Mr. Frost.

He turns around to Race who takes a minute to realize that Les can see him and is more excited than he’s ever been. Race tells Les that he needs his help. He takes Les to find the rest of the guardians, finding Spot only supported on Jack’s back as he was getting weaker and weaker. Katherine could no longer fly and Jack could hardly walk. Race tells Les that everything’s gonna be alright before just as they’re cornered by Spider who tells them that for hundreds of years no one had believed in him.

He explains that back in the dark ages he thrived on the fear of others but the moon chose Jack, Katherine, Crutchie and Spot to counter him and bring hope to the world. He says that now it’s their turn to be forgotten and he goes to strangle Jack who drops Spot to the ground as he fights for air but he’s too weak to fight Spider off.

Les tells Race he’s scared. It’s the same thing Romeo had said to him before. So he tells Les they’re going to have a little fun instead and he manages to catch Spider off guard so he can and Kath can get everyone on a makeshift sled and they can go get the rest of Les’s friends.

Once Les’s friends see him flying, they can all see Race who Les introduces as Mr. Frost. They rally all of his friends together and it gives Spot enough strength to stand on his own, fighting right beside Jack as he comes to.

Spider introduces himself to the kids as the boogeyman who haunts their dreams and will continue to forever. Les tells him that just because he might believe in him, doesn’t mean he has to be afraid of him, and when Spider comes at him to hurt him, Les just stands his ground and the black sand turns back to gold.

As all of his friends stand by his side, Les tells Spider that he can’t have his dreams and Crutchie emerges from the golden sand, taking Spider by surprise and knocking him unconscious.

Jack's first reaction is to hug Crutchie tightly and all the other guardians join him in second.

When the kids try to figure out what happened, Race distracts them with a snowball fight which all of the guardians join in on.

Realizing he’s lost, Spider tries to crawl off and escape.

Jack catches him with all the others close behind. Spider says there’s nothing they can do to stop him from trying again, but soon realizes he’s surrounded by his own nightmares and they can sense his fear. They’re ready to pounce.

The nightmares charge at Spider and drag them down to what we can only assume is the underworld.

Jack then looks at Race and asks him if he wants to be a guardian, if it sounded fun to him.

Race accepts the offer, getting named The Guardian of Fun by the man in the moon.

some more elaborate thoughts on the given dub

OK ok i made a rly vague post about this a while ago but i have A Lot Of Thoughts and want to get them in order

People have their various feelings about dubs, and to each their own opinion, but! I happen to think they can be really good, provided that they’re cast well. Which, of course, is why I have pretty strong opinions on various roles in the Given cast - specifically Mafuyu’s.

Take two seconds to look at the stuff I post on here (or hell, just look at my damn username) and it’s very easy to tell that the show Given means a lot to me. I’ll chat about that more in depth some other time, but it’s something I love a lot and, as a reasonably big fan of the manga/show, I am really, REALLY hoping the dub is done well - not only in having a good cast, but also in keeping the music and its meaning as true to the original as possible. 

Given is, at its core, a story about grieving. The story follows Mafuyu as he not only comes to terms with everything he’s lost, but also how to express his feelings about it - specifically through music. Part of what makes Fuyunohanashi so raw and painful and real (at least in my opinion) is the fact that it’s sung by Mafuyu’s voice actor, Shogo Yano. He does an absolutely fantastic job, and I could ramble about how excellent both Fuyunohanashi and Marutsuke (the end credits song) are all day, but the point I’m trying to make is that the music being performed specifically by Mafuyu’s voice actor makes a world of difference in the emotional value of each song. 

So, where does that leave us with the dub?

The dubbed voice actor could be cast to match Mafuyu’s pitch/tone as closely as possible so the original audio for Fuyunohanashi could be reused. Provided that the voices are similar enough that it’s hard to tell the singer is someone else unless you’re actually looking for it, I’d be ok with that (and similar things have been done reasonably effectively before, such as with Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas).

The directors could also go the translyrics route, and translate the song as best they could into English and have the new VA sing that. Which also works, although some of the meaning and raw emotion of the song will also undoubtedly be lost (the same as with any dub).

But really, I think the best (although most theoretically difficult) option would be to find a dub voice actor who can provide a fantastic performance as Mafuyu, and then deliver an equally fantastic performance of Fuyunohanashi in its original language. Thus providing an opportunity for a new take and perspective while keeping the base meaning of the piece the same. 

Now, if only we knew a voice actor who can give a spectacular and heartbreaking performance as Mafuyu, AND sing beautifully in Japanese...

(if you exist in the cosplayer/anime community of TikTok, you probably know exactly who I’m talking about.) 

Brandon McInnis has had several noteworthy roles (Sir Nighteye in My Hero Academia, Gen Asagiri in Dr Stone, etc), can certainly sing (he’s released both original songs and covers) and is fluent (or at least fluent enough to be able to speak comfortably and release translated covers of anime OPs and other songs in Japanese). Moreover, he’s revealed himself to be a fan of given (see this tiktok) and covered (or at least partially covered? It’s unclear from the short clip) Fuyunohanashi. 

Casting Brandon McInnis as Mafuyu Sato would allow for an opportunity that I, at least, have not seen before in dubs. He could bring his own take to Mafuyu’s characte, Fuyunohanashi, and Marutsuke, all without losing each song’s base meaning or the emotional value of having both songs performed by the same voice actor as the character who sings them. 

I will be perfectly honest - I don’t know how casting for dubs works, or how much power voice actors have over who they can audition for. I don’t know anything about this process, or when casting will start for Given (or if it’s already happened). And, of course, if Brandon McInnis is not cast as Mafuyu then I will fully support any and everyone who dubs this show. 

But, I do think this opportunity is worth noting. And if nothing else, may McInnis know that he was my first choice to dub a character I hold close to my heart.  

TL;DR Brandon McInnis would do a damn good job cast as Mafuyu Sato in the Given dub.

The Doctor’s & Clara’s romance

I’ve made a little compilation of all the notable Whouffle and Whouffaldi moments over the seasons, along with my thoughts and theories:

Their relationship was set up as romance right from the very beginning with these words, because it becomes obvious right away that Clara might be romantically interested in the Doctor by hinting at future snogging. I don’t believe that she immediately jumped him, but she let him know from the beginning that she wasn’t uninterested. 

Let’s jump to “The Crimson Horror” where Eleven and Clara pose as husband and wife and they both convinced Mrs Gilliflower, a woman who is anything but stupid. In fact, they both seem to enjoy it, too.

I always like to believe that the end of “Nightmare in Silver” is the moment Eleven realizes that he fancies Clara because he notices her on a physical level. Besides, the conversation Mr Clever had with Clara in which “the Doctor” confesses his love to Clara is probably based on the Doctor’s own thoughts to which Mr Clever had access at that moment, but Clara saw through it and knew that the Doctor would never admit it.

When Clara suggests that she needs a boyfriend for Christmas dinner Eleven was excited. He actually believed that she was serious for a moment and he was more than happy to be her boyfriend, yet at the same time he was a bit worried that he might disappoint Clara. It was Eleven who was disappointed when he realized that Clara wasn’t actually serious.

Unfortunately they never really got to explore that part of their relationship because he got stranded on Trenzalore and later regenerated.

Matt Smith has confirmed that Clara was sort of his girlfriend while Jenna said in an interview or during a panel that Clara realized she was in love with him during the regeneration.

The rest is under a cut because it’s long:

After his regeneration the Doctor picks up where they left of, with the boyfriend argument. He assumes Clara never actually wanted him to be her boyfriend and admits that it was his mistake for assuming so for a brief moment. 

I never actually paid a lot of attention to this dialogue before watching the German dub for the first time and afterwards I realized that it could be read in various ways. In the German dub “Am I home?” was translated to “Do you want me to live here?” and the Doctor reply is “If that is what you want” and I now realize that the English original can be read as exactly that. The Doctor was more than happy to let Clara live with him.

The Doctor is heartbroken when he realizes that Clara doesn’t understand that he and Eleven are the same person and that his feelings for her haven’t changed and he begs her to give him a chance, which she does.

We all know that Clara started dating Danny in S8 because for her a romance with the Doctor was off the table now that he had made it clear he wasn’t her boyfriend, yet the Doctor is anything but fine with the competition. One of my favourite scenes and clear indication that the Doctor was jealous and actively trying to sabotage Clara’s relationship was the moment he hid in her bedroom during her date. He didn’t want her to be with anyone else.

Nevertheless, he is curious and wants to know just how serious Clara is about the other man and when he realizes that she is in fact serious, he can’t just let it happen.

He is jealous, but he can’t openly show it, so he decides to just do better than the competition.

The brief moment during “The Caretaker” when Twelve assumes she is dating Adrian breaks my heart every time I watch it. He thinks that Clara has chosen the young, dorky looking man with a bowtie who reminds him so much of his former self and he feels reassured that Clara is only using Adrian as substitute because Eleven is gone and that she still loves him. In his head the Doctor thinks that if she still loves Eleven, she can love the current him as well.

The Doctor is devastated when he realizes that Clara isn’t dating Adrian, but Danny, a soldier who couldn’t be more unlike the Doctor.

Again he is competitive and starts showing off while Danny is in the room, trying to prove that he is better for Clara, that he can take her to places Danny couldn’t even imagine, trying to show him that Clara is his by proving she wouldn’t hesitate to run away with him even in the middle of her date with Danny. 

MOTOE is meant as their break-up, their “last hurrah”, because Clara thinks she has chosen Danny and can no longer travel with the Doctor because he has changed. However, she is shocked to learn that their goodbye might be a bit more final than she had in mind and tries to cling to him despite her decision of not wanting to continue wit their travels. She is nervous and frightened. She doesn’t actually want to stop seeing him.

I think the “last hurrah” ist more like a “first hurrah” to them because I genuinely believe that they slept together on the Orient Express, probably for the very first time. That is based on a theory by @anotheruserwithnoname (if you would be so kind to reblog this with a link to your theory added, I couldn’t find it on your blog). The entire corridor scene is sizzling with sexual tension, as several articles have pointed out. Also the fact that both the Doctor and Clara were utterly nervous suggests that they knew what they were about to do (for the first time).

Clara specifically uses the word “dump” and unlike Danny she knows that the Doctor is sort of like a boyfriend or at least has the potential to be because S8 is basically a love triangle story.

After their adventure on the Orient Express Clara understands the Doctor a little better and she knows that she can’t leave him, so she decides to lie to Danny, her boyfriend, about running away with another man. If the Doctor had been just a friend Clara could have told him, she could have told Danny that she had decided to keep travelling with him and their previous phone call tells me that Danny would have understood and Clara knows this. Yet she still decided to keep the Doctor a secret - because he is more than a friend.

This is one of the strongest lines the Doctor has ever said to Clara and Steven Moffat himself confirms that it was meant as an “I love you”, but in this case “I love you” wasn’t enough. The Doctor’s feelings for her are so strong that they cannot be expressed simply by those three words.

This is a very interesting bit of dialogue because it raises the question why the Doctor is angry. Because he is travelling to the afterlife to get Clara’s boyfriend back, the boyfriend of the woman he loves. He doesn’t actually want to do it, but he has to because he loves her so much and he would tear the world apart to make her happy, even if it means that she is going to be with another man.

Towards the end of the episode Clara says something to Danny that makes him realize he never stood a chance against the Doctor. She tells him “He is the closest person to me in this whole world. He’s the man I will always forgive, always trust, the one man I would never, ever lie to.” It hits Danny that he can never compete with that, that even though Clara may have loved him, she will never love Danny as much as she loves the Doctor.

Yet Clara does lie to the Doctor at the end of “Death in Heaven”, just like the Doctor lies to Clara because they want the best for the other (and because they’re idiots). It is only later that they realize just how miserable the other has been and decide to elope together at the end of “Last Christmas”.

Playing “Pretty Woman” is an undeniably romantic gesture, one even Missy recognizes because she gives Clara a look. After telling her all about how Time Lords are above love and romance the Doctor goes and proves her wrong and you can read from Missy’s face that she thinks “oh what an idiot”. 

When the Doctor tells Clara that she needs another relationship, what he actually tells her is that she needs a relationship with a human, someone mortal, someone to keep her grounded. He wasn’t okay sharing Clara with Danny, but I think Clara’s relationship with Jane Austen is proof enough that he isn’t generally against sharing her with a person who would be good for her. He repeats that later in TGWD. However, Clara reassures him that he is enough for her both times.

Funnily enough the bit of dialogue in between where he tells her that humans are always writing songs about relationships or go to war is exactly what the Doctor will do for Clara at a later point.

I’m still in shock over the fact that this line was actually on the show. Obviously, they never say “I love you” to each other. Clara doesn’t because she promised Danny that she wouldn’t say it to someone else. The Doctor doesn’t because his feelings for her are a lot deeper than a simple “I love you”. Yet here is the confirmation that they loved each other. Clara assumes it and the Doctor proves it by coming back for her.

This is the scene where Clara understands for the first time just how their relationship is going to end, I believe. He said it to her before during that episode, he said that one day the memory of her will hurt so much that he won’t be able to breathe, but I don’t think Clara understood it at that point because they were still in the middle of trying to save Ashildr. Here she realizes that she is the person the Doctor truly can’t bear to lose.

Again, they never said those three words to each other for reasons I’ve already mentions and right before her death Clara is afraid that he is going to say them at last because it would rob her of her courage to go through with it. She knows that he loves her, but if she hears those words she knows she will want to stay. For his and for her own sake.

The parallel with the old couple was wonderful and subtle, but that is exactly what the Doctor and Clara are at this point. They are in a romantic relationship, if not married. And there is a wonderful theory out there that I’ve seen her here, but I don’t remember who posted it that said the sudden shift in their S9 relationship makes much more sense if you assume they got married after “Last Christmas”.

In his quiet moments during his 4.5 billion years in the confession dial that is what the Doctor does. He imagines that Clara is by his side. Steven Moffat also said in an interview that the Doctor painted the portrait of Clara from memory.

Again I’d like to point out that the Doctor spent 4.5 billion years trapped in his own person torture chamber and there are moments he thinks about giving up, he thinks about confessing everything, but he doesn’t because that is his last chance of saving Clara. It’s a small chance, but he clings to it because he is determined to get her back.

Even Clara is surprised when she learns just how far he would go for her, what he would go through just to have a tiny chance of saving her and she is shocked that he would do that.

Finally, in the cloisters, Clara decides to come clean and I believe she told him a lot of things during the scene we never saw, including that she loves him, even though she might not have used those exact words. 

Ashildr is older than the Doctor in this scene and she has seen everything there is to see. She knows the Doctor and Clara are more than just friends, she tells him her theory that together they are the hybrid. That is how strong their love is - it can destroy the universe.

In the end they both realize that they have to part ways because if they don’t do it now, they will never have the courage to, but even this last scene shows how bonded they truly are. “Let’s do it like we’ve done everything else. Together.” And by everything I believe they truly mean everything.

10 Dorothy's divorce hit close to home for Bea Arthur

One of Dorothy's biggest insecurities was undoubtedly her divorce from Stan Zbornak. The mere mere mention of his name sent her spinning. In the first season's "Guess Who's Coming to the Wedding?" Dorothy and Stan's daughter Kate announces she's getting married. This meant Dorothy would have to see Stan at the wedding. She puts on a brave face and endures the awful day with some help from her mother Sophia. In the end, she confronts Stan and tells him off. This specific scene was hard for Bea Arthur, as she went through a similar experience with her ex. Gene Saks.

9 The Girls hated the mink episode

In the second season's opener "End of the Curse," the ladies breed minks as a way of making some extra cash. What fans don't realize is how much the actors disliked the script. The staff was aware Betty White was an animal activist, but they didn't know Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan were ones, too. Writer Terry Grossman backed them up as much as he could, but the talented actors persevered. They had no interest in doing stories with harmful themes like breeding animals for profit.

8 A familiar room

Production designer Ed Stephenson favored "modular" sets ⁠because they could be reused with a few simple adjustments. So the series made good use of a teak-paneled courtroom from the show Soap. Dubbed the "Classic Interior", this set was repurposed as a waiting room ("Mother Load"), a banquet hall ("Love for Sale"), a hair salon ("Rites of Spring"), a clothing store ("Love Me Tender"), and a restaurant ("Ro$e Love$ Mile$"). Following the end of the series and its spin-off, the set was rented out to other productions. All proceeds went to Tony Thomas' favorite charity, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

7 Where's the oven?

Some of the best scenes in the whole run of The Golden Girls took place in the kitchen. Whether it was Rose cooking up wacky Scandinavian delicacies or Sophia perfecting one of her Sicilian recipes, the kitchen was the heart of the home. And for a room where eating nothing but mouth-watering meals was par for the course, it may be surprising to learn there was no oven. Just a cabinet with a piece of plywood in place of a door. The kitchen — from Helen Hunt's 1982 sitcom It Takes Two — originally came with an oven next to the fridge.

6 The best prop ever

Blanche was famous for her amorous  lifestyle. And to literally illustrate her many sexual conquests, Blanche offered her surrogate family an original Christmas present like no other. In "'Twas the Nightmare Before Christmas", the ladies' holiday vacations are each postponed by inclement weather. Yet prior to that, the Golden Girls share homemade presents rather than purchased ones. Mrs. Devereaux gifted her friends with "The Men of Blanche's Boudoir" calendar. Every month features a man who brought some "special joy" to Blanche's life. In reality, the prop calendar contained photos of the male production crew in ridiculous outfits and poses.

5 Blanche's accent

Despite Rue's character growing up in a part of Georgia where the Southern accent was considerably modest, she felt it wasn't funny enough for the role of Blanche. So, she opted for a humorous dialect that is more phony than realistic. Rue McClanahan 's inspiration for Blanche's accent came from her mother's cousin. She was from Oklahoma too, but she spoke like a Southern belle pretending to be British. The funny thing is though, Rue almost didn't use the accent for Blanche. She thought she had to keep her default intonation until the show gave her permission to make Blanche Southern.

4 Where's Coco?

Fans surely noticed the ladies lived with a gay man named Coco in the pilot, but where did he go afterwards? The late actor Charles Levin was completely comfortable with playing a gay character. So that's not why he wasn't kept on. What actually happened was the network didn't like the idea of Coco being intimate with other men. Levin suspected the AIDS crisis at the time was a factor. His scenes were trimmed to the point where Coco was only a glorified servant. The official reason conveyed to Levin after the pilot was they wanted to focus on just the women.

3 Being fashionable comes at a price

Blanche, Dorothy, and Rose did not dress like the average senior citizen on television. The majority of their clothes were handmade by costume designer Judy Evans Steele. She implemented a lot of bright colors and prints to match the spirit of Florida. Something else unusual about the ladies' wardrobe — with the exception of Sophia, the Girls dressed like people who don't live in Florida. Meaning it gets very hot there, yet Blanche, Dorothy, and Rose are wearing layered, expensive, and fashionable outfits. It may have been one hundred degrees, but the Girls wouldn't be caught dead in a sleeveless top.

2 The truth about the cheesecake scenes

Would cheesecake be as popular without The Golden Girls? Probably not. The ladies frequently sat down in the kitchen and chatted over several slices of the dessert. Fans love these scenes, but they may be heartbroken to know that not every Girl liked cheesecake. Although Betty White enjoys cheesecake, she doesn't eat anything on camera. She claims Rue McClanahan is the opposite and would go to town if there was cheesecake. McClanahan said that's not true, and she only pretended to eat it. As for Bea Arthur, she hated cheesecake. In fact, she didn't like the scenes involving it either.

1 Living in style

The ladies had a very enticing living room. There was a sizable amount of woodwork on the set, but unless one is looking for it, they would never notice that the wood isn't at all carved. Instead, it's painted to look textured. The show was filmed in standard definition so these details are harder to discern anyway. Something else worth noting is the rattan sofa the Girls lounge on. Assistant art director Michael Hynes chose it because it looked feminine. Throughout the series, the pillows change in style and color because the women's clothes would otherwise clash with the furniture.

What are the Boneheads?

           Basically, the Boneheads is both an AU (alternate universe), and a series of comics centered around the idea that skeletons from different walks of life and different franchises, will mingle and interact with each other. The comics themselves focus on:

Manny Calavera (Grim Fandango)

Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEVIL)

Lewis Pepper (Mystery Skulls Animated)

Manolo Sanchez (Book of Life)

Jack Skellington (The Nightmare Before Christmas)

The group also has two honorary members, Sans and Papyrus (both from Undertale). Basically what that means is that whenever the situation calls/addresses the group as a whole, Sans and Papyrus will be with the group. Otherwise, they’re not around most of the time, unless the message involves them. Any other interactions with the main group won’t involve the entire group.

Can ( Insert name here) be a part of the group?

The answer is no. At this time, I’m not adding any more members to the group or honorary group. My reason for this is because I don’t want the comics to become crowded and unfocused.

What about a cameo?

At some point I’ll add other skeletons in the form of a cameo, but I don’t know when, and that doesn’t mean cameos can apply to any kind of character. Bottom line, if I don’t want a character to appear with the boneheads, they’re not going to.

Do the Boneheads have their own ask blog?

Can I send in a message asking the boneheads something?

At the moment, no. Due to how many messages I still need to answer for the boneheads,  bonehead-related questions are on a message hiatus. If you wish to ask me a question about the boneheads, I will answer it the best I can. Otherwise, your message will be ignored and deleted.

When will the next boneheads comic come out?

When it’s done. I don’t have a set schedule for the comics, so I don’t have a specific release date. I ask that you please be patient, as I’m the only one working on them, and I’m trying to get them done as fast as I can.

Can I make fan art/ fan fiction/ etc. for the boneheads?

Of course! I originally started making these comics for fun (I still do), so I see no reason why you can’t have a little fun yourselves. And if you feel like sharing, be sure to send me a link.

What kind of art to you make?

Mostly Digital.  The kinds of content I tend to make are sketches, comics, fanart, illustrations, and storyboards. Every now and then I’ll make an animatic or an animation.

Which fandoms are you a part of?

This is always a weird one for me to answer. Whenever I talk about what fandoms I’m in, I’m mostly referring to what shows/video games/movies/ that I’m currently interested in. Because outside of that, I really don’t consider myself all that invested in a fandom community. I’m happy to talk about the stuff I like, but I mostly stay away from the community as a whole.

Anyways, for stuff that I like, gosh there’s a lot. Off the top of my head, my current interests are:

skeletons, MSA, pokemon, Wander over Yonder, Steven Universe, My little Pony, GravityFalls, a few anime, Megaman, Disney, Over the Garden Wall, Undertale, and Sonic the Hedgehog, and many, many more.

Can you draw__________?

Most of the time, the answer is going to be no.  This is because I’m working on a lot of different things at once, and thus, don’t always have the time to make artwork for that request. If you’d like, I’d be more than happy to work on your request if you would be willing to commission me for it.

Can you please draw Lewnolo?

No. A thousand times no. For those of you not in the know, Lewnolo is the name of the ship for Lewis Pepper and Manolo Sanchez.  Let me make this clear. I do not ship them. I don’t dislike them, per say, but I have no interest in the ship and don’t wish to create artwork for it. I mention this ship in particular, because it’s the one I get asked about the most. But as long as I’m talking about ships, under normal circumstances, I will not draw shipping artwork for ships I don’t like.

But, you’ve made Lewnolo artwork before! Why won’t you do it now?

Let me ask you this. WHEN did I make that artwork? Cause I can tell you. Anytime I’ve ever made Lewnolo artwork, it was during a challenge called the Kiss Meme Challenge. The challenge involved someone sending in a number with the description of a type of kiss, and two people or a ship attached to the message. I only had a few objections to what I would and would not do; otherwise, I made artwork for a bunch of different ships, despite my own personal feelings. Lewnolo was one of those ships that I was indifferent to. Also, if you go back and read the tags for the artwork that was made for the Kiss Meme, you’ll notice how it’s tagged under “kiss meme”, or something along those lines. You will never find the Lewnolo artwork, or any artwork that was made during the kiss meme under the boneheads tag, because I don’t consider it a part of those comics. The Kiss Meme art only pertains to the Kiss Meme. Nothing more. So there.

If you really want me to draw Lewnolo artwork, you either wait until I do another art challenge when you can send a ship in as a request, or you commission me to draw it.

What about if you draw (insert different ship)?

I’m gonna say no to this, too. I have ships that I like, sure. But there’s a time and a place for it, and I have no interest in creating artwork for any ship I don’t feel invested enough in.
