What Polyamory Does For The It Fandom VS In The St Fandom.

These are some brain worms I've had for a while and I've decided to share, regardless if it makes some people mad. Although that is truly not the intent of this post. Anyways. If you haven't been in the It fandom and only have stayed in the St fandom this post may not make sense but I do encourage you to read it.

I joined the It fandom in 2017. I'm one of those few people who were in the It fandom first before moving over to also join the St fandom in late late 2017/early 2018. I had a blog for consuming content but I didn't start making content until 2020 for the It fandom and more recently and regularly for the St fandom. Anywho what I'm trying to say is that I've seen a lot.

I loved many ships in the It fandom and one of the main ships is Poly Losers Club. This is the first fandom I've seen where a poly ship was one of the more popular ones. Even if someone didn't ship all the Losers, throuple and quatrouples (is that how you say it?) have always been popular in this fandom.

Because it is almost unanimously agreed across the fandom, that whether platonically or romantically, all the Losers love each other. Even the most die hard of reddie shippers, the fandom's most popular ship, can often agree on certain fanon headcannons, Stan and Richie practiced their first kiss on each other, Eddie's first crush was on poor oblivious Bill. And that comes back to the agreement that all the Losers love each other. Ships in this fandom have never had an issue coexisting. If someone shipped something different from someone it was always more like "oh that's not my favorite but I definitely see where you're coming from'" OR they're like "yeah no they're in love too," Hardly ever any belittling or any superiority complexes.

That's what makes being in this fandom fun and easy.

Poly Losers even often features a gay man and a women and I've read many beautiful fics where this is explained as they're more best friends than lovers but Eddie doesn't love Bev any less because she's a woman. This fandom allows Eddie and Bev to have an amazing and emotionally intimate relationship because I feel like this fandom does understand, for the most part, that platonic love is just as important as romantic love.

Now on to the St fandom. There are some poly party shippers out there but they are far and few. And there is SO MUCH shipping discourse. Yes I could talk about Mileven and Byler but come on, it goes beyond that. It's with Jany and Stancy, Ronance and Rockie. Elmax and Lumax, and Steddie and Stonathan. Just about every ship you think of there is an alternate ship that people will fight for. They will belittle you for shipping something they don't, and insist that your ship is nothing but platonic. That,,,that just doesn't happen in the It fandom. You know the joke, "All the Losers had a crush on Bill at one point," I think that in itself says a lot. Bill, the arguably least liked character, (my poor bb), has the joke that all the losers had a crush on him at one point.

I'm getting off track. Anyways I'm not saying that shipping everyone together in a poly sense would fix everything with these shipping wars but i do believe why there was never any shipping wars in the It fandom was because of Poly Losers. Also when I talk about poly in St I mean it like Poly Party and Poly teenage crew. Not together, I hate that I have to clarify that.

In the St fandom, it's just not as universally agreed that everyone loves each other, even in the basic platonic sense. All anyone seems to care about in the St fandom is romantic love. A lot of shippers want to be right, they want to prove that their ship will be cannon which just,,,sucks the fun right out fandom spaces.

Canon, fanon, why can't people just make cute fan art and talk in babbles about thoughts they have on a ship. Why do you have to be right about what's going to be the canon ship? Why do certain people feel the need to put down and even to the extent as far as bullying people who ship something different? I've never seen a fandom so focused on 'canon pairings' like the st fandom. (Side note I was never in the sherlock and supernatural fandoms, I knew to mention this)

The party, like the losers, are friends who have been through turmoil that have bound them together for a lifetime. I don't care what pairing you give me from st, whether it be a platonic or a romantic one, I will tell you that those characters deeply care for each other.

Side note: it's worth a mention that the Duffer brothers originally wanted to film the It remake and when they didn't get it, we got Stranger Things. It can be argued that the Party is based off the Losers club so you know what that means? THEY ALL LOVE EACH OTHER. Take it as platonic or romantic idc.

Again, I don't think that poly party is the answer to ending the shipping wars. I do think however that if people could remember how much the party members mean to each other, that that could make less tiring fandom spaces.

Okay I'm done. I just thought this was an interesting point on how it's been like in the It fandom vs the St fandom.

Wait I was doing tags and I forgot to mention that there are few people who ship Elumax and Stoncy, two throuples and kudos to them. They're just worth a mention, I didn't forget about ya'll

I’m so glad Argilly is picking up traction, we are one step closer to the big mlm polycule with Argyle, Billy, Eddie, Jon, and Steve + I’ve seen almost all ten of the possible individual pairings in the group being delved upon so far (Argilly, Edgyle (idk the name), Jargyle, Mungrove, Harringrove, Byergrove, Stonathan, Eddithan/Jeddie (idk either), Steddie)

All we need now is to think about how Argyle and Steve’s dynamic (Stargyle) would work and HERE is how I think it could:

Everyone trying to pit two bad bitches against each other for best hair, but they actually just know they are simply the masters of their own domain and respect each other; Steve reigns over the tall, poofy, and curled hair, Argyle reigns over the long, luscious, and silky

Argyle will try to expand Steve’s food palate

Steve playing with/braiding his hair, Argyle affectionately ruffling Steve’s

Out of the other guys, even Jonathan when stoned, I feel like Argyle and Steve are able to just naturally be on the same wavelength at any given point; like if Argyle was making astute observations (simple or deep), Steve can easily pick up his train of thought, casually all “oh yeaaah, yeah I totally get what you mean” and vice versa (Argyle picking up what Steve’s puttin down)

Sweet, goofy, playful bfs and also party kings when the energy is high

When they vibe to music together, they put their whole bodies into it; popcorn karaoke riding in each other’s cars, belting their hearts out

Casual homie kisses goodbye; “see you later brochacho” and then Argyle pecks Steve on the cheek

Like, after they have a friendly game, they do a bro handshake, and then Steve’s like “good game” before he goes in for a kiss

Stargyle is the ultimate 'bros to lovers' vibe. Also I just love the name??? Stargyle, ahhh.

Like they call each other 'dude, bro, man' but then you'll catch them asleep cuddling on the couch waiting for their other boyfriends to come home.

Argyle definitely digs movie dates with Steve, because all of the guys have different tastes; Billy and Eddie are more horror/slasher/gruesome action fans, Jonathan forces them to watch indie films or romcoms, Argyle prefers comedies, but he'll watch anything. So Steve usually watches his newest picks with Argyle when he wants to wind down from the week.

The whole polycule is very into playing with each others hair, but Argyle and Steve are the two who will be in the bathroom the longest if paired together (though Steve and Billy also take forever), Argyle helping Steve keep his hair in place while he styles and sprays, Steve brushing out Argyle's hair just cause it's pretty long and can be a hassle to do alone. Steve usually braids Argyle's hair before bed if Billy doesn't beat him to it first (or if Eddie and Jonathan haven't gotten their hands in Billy's hair first, because boy does that man become putty if you touch it).

Steve, Jonathan and Argyle will talk circles around each other when high and Eddie and Billy will just watch while draped over each other or playing cards because they're lazy stoners. Argyle joins them in cards sometimes, really depends on if Steve and Jonathan have moved from rambling to wrestling or not (it's playful, really, they just end up in a tangle of limbs and giggling afterwards because Jonathan is still somehow able to beat Steve every time).

Argyle and Steve have the most similar music taste, and when surrounded by their metal/rock n roll boyfriends, they have to fight for the radio. Thankfully, Argyle's vans is constant vibes and they rule over the selection of tapes.

The broshake and then kiss is so them, I love that. They'll do that before heading off the work and the other three are just bewildered by it in the beginning because

Billy: 'how did our boyfriends steal each other???'

Jonathan: 'When did this even happen??'

Eddie: 'Not hating it, but can you guys not act like platonic bros before maKING OUT IN FRONT OF THE DOOR?!'

first and foremost is ‘sleepless nights, losing ground, i’m reaching for you’ by @andiwriteordie. this fic only got uploaded yesterday and it absolutely INSANE, i felt like i was actually watching it all play out on screen i was so anxious. takes places post s4 vol1, and is an imagining of how vol2 could play out. please, if you read any byler fic, read this one.

next: ‘you’ll forget your days away’ by @douxamers. takes place post s2 - mike thinks that since there’s evil magic, there must be good magic too, and goes in search of it. this one made me feel all warm inside, it feels very in character for both mike and will to do what they do. definitely some angst, but a good amount of fluff to balance it out :)

‘come to california, be a freak’ by crow_of_crimes ( @crimetimecrow ) is a nice mike runaway fic, although it focuses slightly more of the friendship between mike and max which i adore. also elmax! definitely a must-read

‘the yellow box’ by @zombiewheeler is a byler fic FROM HOLLY’S POV! i lost my shit when i first read this. it’s so nice. i love outsider povs of byler so much because it’s So clear how they feel about eachother always

speaking of outsider povs - ‘mama said you can’t hurry love’ by andiwriteordie (again! please read all of their fics actually, i love them all) is mike & will over the years through joyce’s eyes, and another must read

‘kiss it better’ by beansie ( @byeler ) is another look at byler throughout their lives, from childhood to beyond, exploring how they care for each other. it’s incredibly sweet.

and finally - ‘cosmonaut.’ by ghostshaming is an in-progress fic that is just incredible. features the runaway mike wheeler trope with a supernatural and confusing twist. i’ve been on the edge of my seat reading it and cannot WAIT for the next update!

these are just a few of my favourites - i also have fics with background byler (lots of steddie, although there’s a few stonathan and ronance too) that are super sweet. hope this was helpful! happy reading :)

I do get what you mean when you say you were worried about not being taken so seriously if iylo? wasn't so smut-focused, but (a) first, so hilarious to me that there is a context where "will people take my writing seriously without the smut?" is a thing. But also (b) as a demi/ace-spec reader who's kind of ambivalent about smut (don't hate it, it's fun, but also even if it's fun, sometimes my brain just winds up tuning out of a fic no matter how well-written it is) this is actually why I love your writing – your other fics too – especially when smut shows up. But esp iylo?. The characterization, the scenes, all the feelings are so much more tangible and developed, it actually keeps me involved and engrossed in the smuttier bits, because you've made them so real and alive.

As thrilled as I am with every new chapter posted, I'm already dreading the day the final chapter goes up and there won't be anything more coming... But I hope you keep up the long-form semi-smutty writing afterwards too – whether about our two favourite lunkheads (affectionate) or something totally different. I enjoy your writing so much, and I really hope you believe the crazy amount of positive feedback you get because it's def deserved!

pre-iylo, i wrote let it roll and it has a very similar style - steve's characterization, vignette style, eddie leaving hawkins and steve following. but it has an M rating and for a while, i saw a significant difference in how much engagement it got (not something i pay as much attention to now but at the time, it was hard not to). this feels hypocritical of me as i mostly read E-rated fics lmao.

i both relish and dread the day iylo ends. it feels like a very real world that i get to work on and i know it's going to be hard to close the door on it.

as of now, i have 1 long-ish steddie fic (i'm saying 40k but we've heard that before) in the works, as well as a steddie oneshot that i'll post in april (one i talked about AGES AGO but never posted). but outside of that, i feel like it'll be fun to write another pairing so i might give stonathan a shot. and argyle. i gotta write argyle.

i do not ship harringrove IN THE SLIGHTEST. stommy & stonathan r just kinda funny to me,but steddie has my heart. buttt the thing is,all these guys have deffo played a huge part in steve figuring out that he’s into guys. maybe at one point,he found himself looking at jonathan a little too long. or when tommy was with carol,and he’d try to make some sort of “bros over hoes” type comment so he could spend more time with him. or when billy got a little too close under the pretense +

oh. OH. I am so glad someone is giving me the opportunity to go on my long winded rant about how Jonathan was actually Steve's gay awakening, like canonically, because trust me I HAVE SOME THOUGHTS.

In s1, when Steve picks up the nail bat that becomes his signature--who was holding it only seconds before? And who does he use it to rescue from the demogorgon? Jonathan fuckin' Byers. I think it's so important that Jonathan can't protect himself and when Steve does it for him--not protecting Nancy, but protecting his supposed rival for her affections--it becomes one of his defining characteristics for the rest of the show.

In s2, when Murray is talking to Nancy and Jonathan he says "you've got the important shit: shared trauma!" The night before, Nancy and Jonathan had admired their matching demogorgon-summoning scars. Steve doesn't have a scar but he was there too--he has that same shared trauma. We already know how it affected the way he feels about Nancy; I think it's reasonable to assume it gave him some pretty strong Emotions (TM) about Jonathan too.

In s4, when Steve and Nancy are talking and he says "you gave my head the biggest thump of its life." Yeah, you know who actually gave his head that thump while he beat Steve's ass (starting the trend of Steve Harrington Can't Win a Fight)? Jonathan. Fucking. Byers.

Steve is wildly obsessed with him, too. It's more than just "he's the weird kid," it's more than just "he's my girlfriend's guy best friend," it's this whole additional layer of masculinity and pretenses and wanting to be tough but also being gentle (I know Steve paid for that camera Nancy gave Jonathan for Christmas, I just know it) that is just...so queer coded.

Some day, far in the future, Steve Harrington is going to sit straight up in bed, drenched in a cold sweat, and rub his hands down his face while he goes "did I have a crush on Jonathan?!" And then Eddie will sit up in bed next to him and simply say "Yes, sweetheart, now go back to sleep."

I don't even ship Stonathan, honestly--I think they would be a wildly poorly matched pair, their respective weirdnesses don't compliment each other like Steddie imo--but, like, the Duffer brothers have so aggressively bisexual coded Steve with the Steve/Nancy/Jonathan love triangle. I also personally love the Jonathan is transmasc HC and I could so easily see s1 Steve explaining his feelings for Jonathan away by misgendering him, trying to rationalize that he's "still straight," whereas by the end of s4 Steve is like, yep, Jonathan was the first boy I had a crush on.

I love Stargyle as a crackship if we ignore everything canon. Like I think Argyle is the best options out of the guys in the show, however he's Jonathan's bestie sooo there is this slight problem where I can't fully embrace it for some reason. It's the same with R*nance bc why would Robin go for Steve's ex who hurt him. The same goes for Argyle why would he go for Steve, Jonathan's nemesis, plus he already gets shipped with Jonathan and I think they are kinda cute. It's so great Jonathan's opened up to someone outside of trauma/UD/end of the world scenarios.

My Steve ships are Steve x reader or OC (specifically my OC I'm writing for my rewrite of the show) I'm sorry if that's cringe but I'm free lmao Stargyle, Steve x Chrissy (bc hello cheerleader and player trope plus Chrissy is so sweet she would be the best girl out of the cast for Steve), Steve x Kali, Steve x Barb, Steddie and Stommy share the sixth place, Stonathan, Stancy and dead last H*rringr*ve.

My dream ending/endgame for Steve is for him to leave the show with Robin bc they are besties and start over in a new city where he doesn't have to prove himself to people bc usually with anyone who interacts with Steve he has to make up for his high-school years.
