Let my contribution for Simon's birthday be "let's make something out of my overthinking to unpack his funny little violent brain" (I saw this being shared on twitter dot com like "you're not fooling anyone Simon" and "why would he say thaaaat??" and I think I have an idea of why...)
Tumblr media
First of all, I think CO gives enough to let the reader know Simon doesn't know himself, doesn't understand romance/desire (yet) and practically brainwashes himself to make everything around him fit into the narrative shaping his life... but thank fuck we got the sequels. CO Simon feels very "incomplete" to me after getting the full picture of the character in the trilogy – the sequels even reframe or give deeper insight into his thoughts and actions etc in CO.
CO Simon rarely hands over answers straightforwardly, especially when it comes to romance, because he himself doesn't know yet (even if the feelings are already there). Note Simon's "kissing is new, the wanting to kiss" in CO as if he has never wanted to kiss Baz before he actually kisses him vs Simon in awtwb going "I always want to kiss you. I always have" in the context of talking about the past (he was specifically asked if he wanted to kiss Baz in 5th year – he bullshits for a bit and takes his time, but that "I always have" is the true answer).
When Simon shares how much he missed Baz every summer (the longest he went without seeing him) in WS he's not pulling that out of his ass. One of the first things Simon does, something that it's introduced as an essential part of the character (alongside stuff like "he's attuned to danger because he has to," "he knows how to fight" etc) is that Baz consumes his every thought. Iirc he starts talking about him on page 2 or so. In a life or death situation, his head goes to him. He's talking about Baz, sharing so much about him (and not generic info either, but shit you have to pay attention to know) way before he even brings up his "list of things and people he misses about his favorite place in the world."
Think about Simon in CO sulking because he's eating alone and Baz isn't paying him attention like "this is why he doesn't get dates" as if this was a date and he's being neglected. He calls Baz a creep or something there, even though Baz is not doing anything even remotely creepy. He's just reading, but that's the problem: he's doing something that takes his attention away from Simon, instead of eating with Simon (food=love and connection in the series). It tells you that Simon just gets a bit nasty without actually meaning it, or that when something unsettles him, he tends to go for the easiest (maybe even negative) explanation, rather than unpacking his feelings.
There's only one time I could genuinely see Simon being "creeped out" by Baz, and one has to remember that Simon figuring out Baz is a vampire wasn't an accident. He actually "investigated" and looked for proof, but before that, the signs must have been genuinely unsettling (the image of Baz's mouth when it fills with teeth in his sleep, when it's dark and quiet and you're expecting a regular human, could be nightmare-inducing). Even more given that they were just kids and Simon was being trained to fight all sorts of dark creatures.
The thing is: you don't follow guys who genuinely creep you out. You want them the fuck away from you. Simon might have tried to change roommates, but he was following Baz everywhere when he absolutely didn't have to (he was making damn sure he was close and seated whenever Baz wanted to dedicate time to his passions and hobbies). When he says it was "to prove he's a vampire" in CO, he states it with absolute conviction, but it turns out the little bitch already knew for sure before he started stalking him, he just didn't want to confront the real reason he wanted to follow him then. He even looks back at this in awtwb like "there's obviously no heterosexual explanation for me starting to follow you everywhere in 5th year" and even has the gall to look exasperated at Baz not getting that "I'm just trying to prove you're a vampire" was bullshit (Simon clearly does a lot of thinking about his true feelings for Baz in the year that passes after CO).
To top it off, while the vampirism might have genuinely unsettled him at first (a valid reason to be creeped out) a Simon that is getting to know and tries to be honest with himself just tells you is hot. He's into Baz being a vampire and all things Baz.... Also, he does things like saying "he's ruthless and mean" and whatever in CO, and you think he's seeing this as something negative, but he's actually into this too. Hell, he's even like "how dare him being hot" like it's a personal affront.
So when CO Simon is like "he's a creep and I totally mean it" I wouldn't take it too seriously or even as a bad thing (because it's Baz). He's not actually presenting you with something about Baz that puts him off (like people normally would be doing when using "creep"). Baz might have had a bit of a severe-goth-vampire air in his gel-wearing days – a regular person who finds him hot might not feel inclined to associate that with "creep," but Simon is used to feeling angry and uncomfortable and unsettled, so I'm not surprised he goes to "off-putting words" so easily, even if what he's feeling is attraction or romantic love or the desire to have Baz's attention (to be on Baz's mind as much as Baz is on his). Even when what he's expressing is that Baz's presence has the power to make him feel calm or settled in an unfamiliar place. That it makes him feel home – that's the essence of what he's conveying in that part I'm sharing at the beginning of the post... if Watford feels like home to Simon and that's connected to sharing a room and sleeping next to Baz, then what does that make Baz? What does that say about the fact that sleeping without feeling Baz close to him is simply not the same? That he doesn't sleep as well without him?
I'm even inclined to think "he's a creep/he creeps me out" might be Simon's version of mental pigtail pulling. (I think about MRB, the official AU that tries to keep their essence, and iirc Simon is mentally calling Baz a "creep" and a "vampire" after he's already following him around and trying to catch him showing skin. He's already thirsting when he says that! He might also be sulking there since Baz is a disaster and not making a move haha). That kid thing where you insult that person you like, behaving like you don't like them at all for whatever reason. (And also not a kid thing, given that lighthearted "insults" are them actually flirting when they're together. That whole scene in their room in SFC when they're talking about cake and how Simon heard about that place and the "insults" and Baz pretending to leave without kissing Simon goodbye it's all basically foreplay.)

hey emma! do u mind expanding on mitch’s utilisation this post season and how theyre not maximising him at what hes best at so he can contribute elsewhere where the team is lacking like you mentioned in your post? fairly new to hockey so im a bit behind :( thank you!!
i'm not an expert on this but lfksdj i can rant. jonas siegel dropped an article today about mitch's playoff impacts, so i'll drop some screenshots you can read here if you don't have an athletic sub.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and there is also this video from yesterday that essentially breaks down the way mitch adjusts his game to the playoffs vs the regular season and the way mitch adjusts to play more conservatively (which, despite the 'best playoff performer' narrative, still makes him better than most players on our team. by not a small amount lol)
but mitch has been put on the second line this postseason to essentially shut down the bruins biggest offensive threat in david pastrnak and they've done that extremely effectively. his line has taken a vast majority of their shifts starting in their own dzone, meaning they aren't immediately set up for success bc they have to win the puck back away from david & co and are tasked with making their way back down to their own ozone and trying to make an offensive impact that way .. which has allowed auston's line to already start their shifts set up in their ozone 80% of the time apparently. in that way, i don't think the first line's been very effective bc they're sitting at a net neutral rn despite scoring 'the most' goals for us.. meaning they're getting scored on as much as they're scoring, lol. (auston himself is actually at a +2 but bert and domi are getting caught out and prayed on so they're at 0 +/- wise lol)
leafs have a real problem creating offense in the post season, and instead of being able to load up and let mitch do the elite playmaking he can do by being a little LESS defensively responsible and more quick w his hands and thinking on his feet on the rush, they've been forced to play mitch in a more defensive position bc other forwards can't take that spot on the second line and effectively shut pasta/bruins down. essentially, mitch doesn't get room to do what he's best at (help draw attention and make room for the best shooters on this team and then pass to them) bc he has to worry abt making the smart and safe plays to keep the puck away from the bruins scary offensive threats and it's making him look like he's been neutralized... when REALLY.. he's being used in a position that is not favorable to the best offensive parts of his game but rather relied upon for his ability to be responsible. even if he WERE putting up points with auston, people would say they don't matter since they're not at Clutch moments so lol. this team is just built weirdly and domi and bertuzzi are liabilities defensively so they've been put with our most responsible forward on the top, but so far they're not making a huge difference. it is what it is, and willy coming back will certainly help with some off the rush offense probably, but willy is also a defensive liability but he's being played with holmberg and calle who are both way more solid in that way.... luckily the bruins 3rd line isn't as dangerous as the top 2 so maybe he and the swedes will be able to feast on them 🤞🤞🤞
we will see what game 4 holds tonight... i think this team could be so much better with some actual upgrades on d, but we will have to SEE what treliving does this summer. it is very annoying to watch magical mitch marner with real creative vision have to take on a more under appreciated role as a defensive bedrock of this team, but idk what i expected considering we were LITERALLY playing him as a defenseman this season, lol. i have way more fun watching him play globetrotter and put up points but he is basically an elite jack of all trades. siegel's article talks abt the key to that line's offense being him shooting more, so we'll see if that's something he personally incorporates, but a lot of the critique of him this year in the postseason has been so unfair in comparison to the position he's being put in.

“I’m telling you,” drifts through the cracked door, and Louis’ ears prick, twitching with interest. “There’s something wrong with that cat.” “Have you talked to Liam?” asks another voice, worried. Louis thinks it’s the tall one with curly hair. Taller one. They’re all tall when you’re ten inches high. “Not medically wrong,” the blond one says. “But I swear, and I know this sounds nuts, but I don’t think he’s a cat?”

Louis shrugs his shoulders as nonchalantly as he can manage in his aroused state. “Let you stay in my house didn’t I?” He narrows his eyes at the spliff still between Liam’s fingers. “Let you smoke my weed. Seems like a fair trade to me.” Liam raises a brow challengingly. His expression is mostly unimpressed, but even from the other side of the room, Louis can still see the glint in Liam’s eyes. He likes it when Louis makes him work for it too. Zayn chuckles darkly. “Looks like someone came home with an attitude. What’s wrong Lou? No one on the road with you that could put you in your place hmm?” (Or the one where Louis comes home from tour feeling exhausted, yet antsy. Luckily, Liam and Zayn are there to put him back together).

He let out a noise of surprise as his arms were suddenly full of a sweaty body, as Tommy threw himself at Louis and held on tightly. “Thank you so fucking much,” he muttered against Louis’ shoulder, squeezing a little. “You have no idea how much this means to us.” Louis softened a little, gently tapping Tommy’s back. “I absolutely know what this means, lad,” he replied, his voice gentle and supportive. “The way you’re reacting to being out there? That’s exactly why I chose you for the support slot.” He gave a reassuring squeeze. “You deserve this, okay?” He pulled back a little, gripping the back of Tommy’s neck and looking him in the eyes. “You deserve this.”

TYKE & SONS LUMBER CO. SENTENCE STARTERS!
feel free to change these as needed.
❝ Well, little [___], the day has come! ❞
❝ No, not the beginning of summer or your coming of age, but me throwing you out on your ear! ❞
❝ That's what my father said to me when I was your age. ❞
❝ No one knows where [they] went. Really weird, if you ask me. ❞
❝ You'll soon be let free from this prison you call "home." ❞
❝ It's time for you to explore the world. ❞
❝ I'm going to be watching you from a safe distance. ❞
❝ I am a professional. ❞
❝ Now, get lost. ❞
❝ This is your time to shine! ❞
❝ Promise to make me a proud [parent], will ya? ❞
❝ This is as important as me teaching you how to walk on two legs. ❞
❝ I need a Mixchiato to-go, quick! ❞
❝ I ordered a Mixchiato, not a regular coffee. You really need to listen closely. ❞
❝ I expected more of you. ❞
❝ For real, if you fail this, I will ground you forever. ❞
❝ I would help, but I'm waaay too busy complaining over the simple things in life. Like weird-tasting coffee. ❞
❝ Now go! Go and make me proud! ❞
❝ The moral of the story is that you can make cocktails, even without the ice. ❞
❝ [___] is going to ruin the whole thing for me. [They] will expose me. ❞
❝ I can't let that happen. ❞
❝ I have to get rid of [them]. ❞
❝ That won't be too much of a problem. I've done similar things before. ❞
❝ I will continue to take care of those who find out more than they need to know. ❞
❝ I'm a mastermind. I can't fail. ❞
❝ Did I just have a stroke? I actually forgot my name. ❞

❝ Tomorrow is another day, where I hope nothing unexpected happens. ❞
❝ Please don't make this difficult. ❞
❝ What's a car? ❞
❝ Move now or I will take out the taser. ❞
❝ [___], do something! ❞
❝ Don't drag your [child] into this. ❞
❝ And that, [son], is how you avoid the cops. ❞
❝ Something isn't right. I really don't recall doing something illegal this time. ❞
❝ We need to get to the bottom of this. ❞
❝ YOU need to get to the bottom of this. Because I'm old. ❞
❝ Who told you that I would actually pay you with money? ❞
❝ Bad things happen from time to time. I'm just happy that I'm still alive. ❞
❝ Go take a look. You will like what's down there. ❞
❝ Listen, I need your help again. ❞
❝ You still owe me one after the coffee incident yesterday. ❞
❝ Go fight the robot. Or make it go away. I don't care. ❞
❝ Something happened that really upset me. ❞
❝ I was supposed to get trashed, yet I am working perfectly fine. ❞
❝ I woke up here in the dump this morning. ❞
❝ You animals wanted to trash me. ❞
❝ Look at my six-pack. I'm ripped. RIPPED! ❞
❝ I am going to crush you. I'm going to smash you to the ground, sit on you, tear you apart, and make lumber out of you. ❞
❝ You think you can stop me? ❞
❝ I knew you could do it! ❞
❝ Overall, a pretty neat battle. I give it a seven out of ten. ❞
❝ I was young once, too. I know what's hip. ❞
❝ I would strangle you if I could. ❞
❝ Nobody can ever know what my deal is. ❞
❝ Ahahahahahaha! I'm so evil! ❞
❝ Where have you been!? I was slightly worried. ❞
❝ I have something interesting to show you. ❞
❝ That's it! You're under arrest for sleep disturbance and murder! ❞
❝ Murder? Since when is that a topic? ❞
❝ Man, we really need a television. ❞
❝ Oh, [___]. Violence isn't always the solution. ❞
❝ That's what your mother would say. ❞
❝ That was a sick move. Good [boy]. ❞
❝ What. ❞
❝ ...they all died...blah blah blah...screams...blah blah blah...magic creatures and all that stuff...blah... ❞
❝ And then I sold them on the black market because the company wasn't paying off. ❞
❝ I don't like unannounced visitors in here. Get out! ❞
❝ I didn't know who was the right person to turn to. ❞
❝ I was tricked, I tell you. ❞
❝ The day would come where I would have my revenge. ❞
❝ That's what actually happened, for real! ❞
❝ We had a fight afterwards and [they] THREW me out of the window. ❞
❝ I landed on my head and they had to give me a new body because I would have died. ❞
❝ I look like a Minecraft Creeper now. ❞
❝ He looks like something that died under my bed and was stored in my fridge. ❞
❝ Agh, I'm just not a bad person. ❞
❝ Oh, boy. I think we're in for a treat. ❞
❝ I do have an answer. Yes, I really do. The answer is very interesting, [___]. The answer is complex. However, I'm not gonna tell you what it is. ❞
❝ We know that we're the good guys, and that counts, I guess. ❞
❝ Good night, and don't let the monsters get you. Hahaha. ❞
❝ Seriously!? How dumb are you? ❞
❝ I came to the conclusion that the best solution was to just lure you down here, and that was easier than I thought. ❞
❝ Don't worry, I won't just kill you off. ❞
❝ You're trapped, after all. What can you do? ❞
❝ I just wanted to experience what it felt like to be the star, for at least a moment. ❞
❝ I've had it with you!!! ❞
❝ Wow! You need to teach me that! ❞
❝ Sorry for being such a weirdo. ❞
❝ It's not like there has been any lore, ever, that took more than five years to solve. ❞
❝ If anyone needs me, I'll be in the underground disco. ❞

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @thewolvesof1998 thank u bud i’m procrastinating packing and this was fun
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
seven!
2. what’s your total ao3 word count?
129,484 which is a fake number to me
3. what fandoms do you write for?
nothing has made me as insane in my life as network television procedural drama 911 on abc, so
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
you can start a family who will always show you love
let the world have its way with you
my hearts over-pumping and your mouth is an ambulance
like a dog with a bird at your door
i like the summer rain (i like the sounds you make)
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
i try very hard to because they make me so happy and it’s unbelievably kind of people to take the time to leave them!!! However i sometimes leave it too long and then worry it’s weird to reply after like. a month. which as a fic reader i wouldn’t give a shit about so idk what my problem is!!!! i will reply i will just maybe take a hot sec to do it
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i don’t have any i’m a happily ever after or bust kinda guy in my own head if nowhere else…… angstiest is probably the sound of love astounds me if only because it ends post-feelings realisation but still pre-relationship
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
they’re all so happy omg. i will say with great personal bias it’s my heart’s over-pumping but also i have. a sequel in the works….
8. do you get hate on fics?
no people have been very very very lovely but also sjjsjsjs i’ve not been here super long. the funniest comment i’ve gotten was on my first fic where someone was like i liked this but it is jarringly inaccurate as mcdonald’s in california doesn’t have a veggie burger option 😭 i cried laughing im so sorry to u americans. pls petition your local mcdonald’s to stock the mcplant it slaps
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
have written two e-rated fics….. it’s very fun but i don’t think i’m very good so i’d like to practice actually (maybe some sexy prompts after i finish the bed-sharing ones?) just the regular kind for now like i love buck and eddie desperately and am myself into a million things but i don’t know how kinky they would actually get in my own head. so just a little gross with it for now i guess
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
nope!
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
nope
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
no that would be SICK. @alliaskisthepossibilityoflove is podficcing bucket list fic which is so very cool of her!
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
no omg i don’t know how y’all do it i’m bad at group projects but also this sounds soooooo fun. if also deeply stressful
14. what’s your all time favorite ship?
if that’s synonymous with most likely to get you institutionalised, uh. gestures around us. otherwise mulder/scully and i am just now right as i’m typing this realising i’ve never ever in my life actually read x files fic what the fuck. also steve/bucky but i haven’t read fic since 2017 probably
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
listen i have not written a word for x files au past that one snip i shared forever ago. i want to soooo bad i’ve talked about it to some of you very rabidly but. it does not want to be written and if it did it would have to be so fucking long which is very daunting to me. not saying i’ve put her in the ground yet but. we might need some necromancing
16. what are your writing strengths?
i think i’m pretty good at writing in character? mostly? sometimes i struggle with buck just because i think we’re very similar and i project a little and then have to go back and fix it lmao but for the most part i think i’m good at that! and i have a lot of fun writing dialogue
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
plot!!!!!! and pacing!!!!!!!!!!! also my inability to write non-linearly omg if i get stuck i just get Stuck i can’t jump ahead
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
oooh i love it and would love to include more than the teeniest bits i have but i’m so conscious about it sounding natural and not stiff to people whose language it actually is (shout out and a million kisses to @eddiebabygirldiaz for fixing the spanish in i love you like a dog!!!!!)
19. first fandom you wrote for?
911 babey!
20. favorite fic you’ve written?
my heart’s over-pumping and your mouth is an ambulance !!! not just because it was the first fic i posted after joining tumblr fandom but. idk it is so so so special to me like it makes me so happy and when i think about it i’m like. hey u wrote that. good for u my dude. and also maybe i just associate it with meeting a bunch of you whjsjssjsj
tagging @callaplums @eddiebabygirldiaz @housewifebuck @rewritetheending @try-set-me-on-fire @onward--upward @anxieteandbiscuits @devirnis @athenagranted if anyone wants to do this i’m nosy soz if you already have !!!!

BLACK COPS DON’T MAKE POLICING ANY LESS ANTI-BLACK
The idea that we can resolve racism by integrating a fundamentally anti-Black institution in the U.S. is the most absurd notion of all
This article is part of Abolition for the People, a series brought to you by a partnership between Kaepernick Publishing and LEVEL, a Medium publication for and about the lives of Black and Brown men. The series, which comprises 30 essays and conversations over four weeks, points to the crucial conclusion that policing and prisons are not solutions for the issues and people the state deems social problems — and calls for a future that puts justice and the needs of the community first.
Amid recent growing calls for defunding police this summer, a set of billboards appeared in Dallas, Atlanta, and New York City. Each had the words “No Police, No Peace” printed in large, bold letters next to an image of a Black police officer. Funded by a conservative right-wing think tank, the billboards captured all the hallmarks of modern pro-policing propaganda. The jarring choice of language, a deliberate corruption of the protest chant “no justice, no peace,” follows a pattern we see frequently from proponents of the police state. Any word or phrase made popular by the modern movement is quickly co-opted and repurposed until it’s rendered virtually meaningless. But perhaps the most insidious aspect of modern pro-police propaganda is reflected in the choice to make the officer on the billboard the face of a Black man.
This is in keeping with a narrative pro-police advocates seek to push on a regular basis in mass media — that policing can’t be racist when there are Black officers on the force, and that the police force itself is an integral part of Black communities. When Freddie Gray died in police custody, police defenders quickly pointed out that three of the officers involved were Black, implying that racism couldn’t be a factor in a case where the offending officers were the same race as the victim.
When I scaled the flagpole at South Carolina’s capital in 2015 and lowered the Confederate flag, many noted that it was a Black officer who was tasked with raising the flag to the top of its pole again. When an incident of brutality brings a city to its brink, Black police chiefs are paraded to podiums and cameras to serve as the face of the United States’ racist police state and to symbolically restore a sense of order. One of the most frequent recommendations from police reformists is to recruit and promote more Black officers. This is based on an argument that the primary problem with policing centers on a “breakdown of trust” between police forces and communities they have terrorized for decades; the solution, then, is to “restore trust” between the two parties by recruiting officers who resemble the communities they police. Images of police officers dancing or playing basketball with Black children in economically deprived neighborhoods are often published as local news items to help drive this narrative home. The idea gained traction in the aftermath of numerous urban rebellions in the 1960s and has seen a resurgence in the wake of the 2014 Ferguson uprising.
When protests broke out in Atlanta this past summer in response to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, the city’s Black mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, held a press conference flanked by some of Atlanta’s most famous and wealthy Black residents. Together they pleaded for protestors to go home and leave property alone. Soon after, Rayshard Brooks was killed by white police officers in Atlanta. The moment exposed a class divide that exists in cities all over the nation: A chasm between the image of Black affluence promoted by Black politicians and the Black petite bourgeoisie (middle class) and the lived realities of the majority of Black residents in those cities, many of whom still face disproportionate unemployment, displacement by rapid gentrification, and policies that cater to white corporate interests. If the solution to racism were simply a matter of a few select Black people gaining entry to anti-Black institutions, we would see different outcomes than what we’re witnessing now. But the idea that we can resolve racism by integrating what is perhaps the most fundamentally anti-Black institution in the U.S. — its policing and prison industry — is the most absurd notion of all.
Part of the reason why calls to defund police have sent such shock waves through the nation, prompting placement of pro-police billboards and pushback from figures of the Black establishment, is because it cuts right to the heart of how structural racism operates in the United States. At a time when the Black elite would prefer to measure progress by their own tokenized positions of power and symbolic gestures like murals, the push to defund police would require direct confrontation with how the white supremacist system has been organized since the end of chattel slavery — when the prisons replaced plantations as the primary tool of racial control. Actions that may have been widely seen as adequate responses to injustice just a couple of decades ago now ring hollow to many observers who see that Black people continue to be killed by a system that remains largely unchanged.
Police forces represent some of the oldest white fraternal organizations in the United States. The rules of who is empowered to police and who is subject to policing are fundamental to the organization of the racial caste system. Even in the earliest days of integrating police forces, Black officers were often told they couldn’t arrest white people. The integration of police forces does nothing to alter their basic function as the primary enforcers of structural racism on a daily basis, and the presence of Black officers only serves as an attempt to mask this fact.
Police forces in America began as slave patrols, and their primary function has always been to act in service of the white ownership class and its capitalist production. In one century, that meant policing and controlling enslaved Black people, with the purview to use violence against free Black people as well; in another, it involved cracking down on organized labor, for the benefit of white capitalists. Receiving a badge and joining the force has been an entryway to white manhood for many European immigrants — providing them a sense of citizenship and superiority when they would have traditionally been part of the peasantry rather than the white owner class.
That spirit of white fraternity remains deeply entrenched in the culture of policing and its unions today, regardless of this new wave of Black police chiefs and media spokespeople. Police forces became unionized around the same time various other public employees sought collective bargaining rights — however, under capitalism, their role as maintainers of race-property relations remains the same. The most fundamental rule of race established under chattel slavery was that Black people were the equivalent of white property (if not counted as less than property). This relationship between race and property is most overt during periods of open rebellion against the police state, where officers are deployed to use lethal force in the interest of protecting inanimate property. We see swifter and harsher punishments handed out to those who vandalize police cars than to police who assault and kill Black people. (This is a major reason why the press conference in Atlanta with T.I. and Killer Mike struck people as classist and out of touch with the majority Black experience.)
This same pattern extends throughout the carceral state. Roughly a quarter of all bailiffs, correctional officers, and jailers are Black, yet there’s no indication that diversifying the staff of a racist institution results in less violence and death for those who are held within it. That’s because the institution continues to operate as designed. It is not “broken,” as reformists are fond of saying. The fallacy is in believing the function of police and prisons is to mete out punishment and justice in an equitable manner and not to first and foremost serve as a means of maintaining the race, gender, and class hierarchy of an oppressive society.
Believing that the system is “broken” rather than functioning exactly as intended requires a certain adherence to white supremacist and anti-Black beliefs. One has to ignore the rampant amount of violence, fraud, and theft being committed by some of the most powerful figures in society with little to no legal consequence while massive amounts of resources are devoted to the hyper-policing of the poor for infractions as minor as trespassing, shoplifting, and turnstile jumping at subway stations.
The Trump era has provided some of the starkest examples of this dynamic. The most powerful person in the nation and his associates have been able to break the law and violate the Constitution — including documented crimes against humanity — in full view of the public while he proclaims himself the upholder of law and order. Wealthy celebrities involved in the college admissions bribery scandal have gotten away with a slap on the wrist for orchestrating a multimillion-dollar scheme while a dozen NYPD officers surrounded a Black teenager, guns drawn, for the “crime” of failing to pay $2.75 for a subway ride.
The propaganda that depicts this type of policing as being essential to public safety and order is fundamentally classist and anti-Black. It traces its roots to the Black Codes that were passed immediately after the Civil War to control the movements of newly freed Black people. It relies on the racist assumption that Black people would run amok and pose a threat to the larger society if not kept under the constant surveillance of a police force that has authority to kill them if deemed necessary, and with virtual impunity. That’s why we are inundated with a narrative that depicts the police officer who regularly patrols predominantly Black communities as being an essential part of maintaining order in society.
One of the primary talking points against calls to defund and abolish police is that Black communities would have no way to maintain peace and order, and that a state of chaos would ensue. In wealthier neighborhoods, if an officer is present at all, they’re most likely positioned by a gate at the top of the neighborhood to monitor who enters. Meanwhile, the officer assigned to the predominantly Black community is there to keep a watchful eye on the residents themselves, and to ensure they are contained in their designated place within the larger city or town.
The current political divide on this issue falls exactly along these lines, separating those who think the system is simply in need of reform and those who correctly define the problem as the system itself. The reality is that Black people fall on both sides of this divide, which is why we find so many Black officers in uniform arguing for a reformist agenda even as every reform they propose is vociferously opposed by the powerful, majority-white police unions and most of the rank and file. Reformists remain committed to preserving the existing system even though the idea of reforming it to be the opposite of what it was designed to be is an unproven theory that’s no more realistic than the idea of abolishing police altogether.
The most pressing question remains: Why are we seeking to integrate and reform modern manifestations of the slave patrols and plantations in the first place? In Mississippi and Louisiana, state penitentiaries are converted plantations. What is a reformed plantation — and what is its purpose?
We must remember that many of these so-called “reforms” are not new. For as long as the plantation and chattel slavery systems existed, there also existed Black slaveowners, Black overseers, and Black slave catchers who participated in and profited from the daily operations of white supremacy. The presence of these few Black people in elevated positions of power did nothing to change the material conditions of the millions of enslaved people back then. And it makes no greater amount of sense to believe they indicate a shift in material conditions for Black people now.

"If you love someone" and "Sk8er boi"
Another two for the #FearOfMu21c project, crowdsourcing the greatest singles of the 21st century. Here’s an index post.
"If you love someone" - The Veronicas
Gothpop twins Jessica and Lisa Origliasso have been making great music for most of the century. They've gone from power pop (4ever, All about us) through synth-dance (Untouched), and then into an era of molten Barbie poured into a crucible with black eyeliner. Or something like that.
Tumblr media
"If you love someone" comes from The Veronicas' 2014 eponymous album, itself following five years of development hell and a transfer from Warner Brothers to Sony. There's anger on the album, most notably on the sarcastic "Did you miss me". The song's co-written by Lisa and Jessica, their regular collaborator Josh Katz, and songwriting powerhouse DNA Music.
And it's happy, upbeat, inclusive. A big giant hug for all the queers, all the misfits, all the people who don't quite fit into Normal Bread Society. Yes, it's a simple and universal emotion, expressed in an uncomplicated way. And sometimes, the simple stuff is just right.
youtube
"Sk8er boi" - Avril Lavigne
Speaking of simple concepts: "He was a boy. She was a girl. Can I make it any more obvious?"
Avril Lavigne splashed onto the scene in summer 2002, and snotty bratty mall-punks around the world found their eyes popping out on stalks. "Complicated" had an interesting video; "Sk8er boi" was the soundtrack to rebellion. A youthful, limited, acting out against the system rebellion.
Tumblr media
Written by Avril with powerpop trio The Matrix, "Sk8er boi" tells of a doomed romance between a posh ballet superstar who spurns the advances of a snotty bratty skater boy. By concluding with the news that Avril gets with the skater, we're spared the problem of explaining a genderbent Mary Sue to 2002.
The song is a blast. Literally: it begins at high volume and doesn't stop. The lyric starts as simple, staccatto phrases - until it gets complex. There's plenty of music to be had - power pop chords, hook after hook, and Avril shows she can sing. But it's the energy that impresses - "Sk8er boi" sees the line between "milquetoast" and "too loud", dances along it, turns a few cartwheels, and ends by making an iconic hand gesture in our face.
It's one of Avril's signature songs, alongside "Complicated" and 2007's "Girlfriend" - all three made my longlist for this project.

Requests I Wish I Didn't Have To Add
Don't Harass People Based on My Words. (If an action is harassment when targeted at a good person, it is also harassment against anyone else.)
Tumblr has a rampant harassment culture problem. Most users do not recognize their behavior as harassment. Thus, if you just thought to yourself that this doesn't apply to you, please indulge me and take a moment to read on. It can't hurt.
These behaviors are wrong and unhelpful, even if they are targeted against someone truly horrible. Don't feed the trolls, don't bolster bigots' persecution narratives, and don't help cults further indoctrinate their recruits.
I do not condone any of the following actions. I will block anyone I find engaging in that sort of behavior.
Don't initiate direct contact with anyone because of a negative interaction I had with them or a criticism I made. This includes messages, asks, contact through other platforms, etc. (Basically, anything other than commenting in the relevant public posts.)
Don't use a negative interaction or criticism I made as supporting evidence in call-out posts or other methods of spreading assertions about others. I will not tell anyone what to think about a person, beyond providing/correcting factual context as needed, so everyone can form opinions for themselves.
Don't target individuals because of a trend I criticized, whether in media, fandom, society, or otherwise. Criticism of a pattern does not imply condemnation of any singular instance following that pattern.
Don't demand disclosure (or proof) of someone's private information for the sake of justifying/criticizing their engagement with specific topics. Private information includes identities, demographics, relationships, trauma, life experiences, etc.
Don't unexpectedly involve creators in negative discussions of their work. I do not want anyone to be bothered due to my personal opinions in a discussion that was intended for fandom alone.
What I Mean When I Discuss Art, Media, and Fandom
I frequently discuss media, art, fiction, and fandom, and the ways these things relate to real-life issues. That is probably the most frequent way you will see me discuss social justice issues on this blog, as I do not use this particular platform for activism.
However, the existence of a relationship between real-life issues and art does not mean that relationship is easily definable, consistent, bidirectional, or one-to-one.
Nothing I say is ever meant to suggest that preferences in fiction (whether creation or consumption) are indicative of real-life desires/morality. Fiction can cause real-life harm, but that does not mean fictional harm causes real-life harm. Discussion of fictional characters and their actions may be related to similar discussions of real-life people, but they are not the same thing, nor should they be approached in the same way.
I like discussion, not passing judgment on individual tastes. In this context, please just take me literally; my words are not secretly implying condemnation or endorsing harassment.
That applies in both directions: I don't support efforts to pass judgment in this manner. However, I also am not obligated to reassure people acting in defensiveness against my assumed intent/implications rather than my actual statements. (Furthermore, while you may associate specific implications with a word/statement, that does not guarantee that I mean those implications rather than the literal definition.)

A year or two ago one of my co-workers gave me an old golfball holder they were getting rid of. I don't have any golfballs, but I took it anyway because I thought it would make a nice display case for my pool balls; I don't have a pool table, but I love the game and I thought the 7 or the 8 or the 13 would make a nice paperweight, so I figured I may as well buy the whole set. Anyway, I knew pool balls were considerably larger than golfballs, but the shelves looked like they might be perfect, a real snug fit. And they almost were! Just a few millimeters too small! I could probably have forced them in, but I would've cracked the wood or chipped the plastic. Since then, the holder has been literally collecting dust in a corner of my bedroom. I didn't know what to do with it until recently.
Last year, I started collecting dice. I have a few standard sets of gaming dice, but I also bought a ton of odd-numbered irregulars to fill in the gaps. I'm especially fond of the 13-sider, my favorite number. I just realized the other day that the golfball holder would be the perfect display case for all my dice! There are 25 shelves, and I have dice numbered 4 through 21, so there's plenty of space left over to grow my collection.
Tumblr media
As you can see, I'm rather fond of the color purple. Perhaps too fond, because when I had them mixed together in a dice bag they all looked exactly the same, so I had to turn them back and forth in my hand to find their highest numbers (I didn't have this problem with the regulars, just the odds, the 14, 16, and 18). This holder makes it so much easier to tell them apart and find whichever number I'm looking fot. I definitely need more dice for each slot, but the website I buy from closes their warehouse over the summer, so I'll have to wait until August.
I don't even play table top games, I just really like dice. This is a fun pointless collection, and I look forward to continuing it. Maybe someday I'll build custom shelves for each number, because the 13 spot is crowded and the 21-sider is much bigger than the rest and needs more space.

would you still love me then? | oikawa tooru
"Is Y/N around?" Oikawa asked one of your friends but they all shrugged, covering up for you like you'd asked, saying you had some errands to run and that they didn't know where you were off to even when they did know.
He sighed, clearly disappointed. He wanted to tell you something really important but when the time was right, you would always be off elsewhere. He thanked them in a quiet voice before leaving the classroom and walked to Matsukawa's house with Iwaizumi, Hanamaki, and the resident himself.
You're neighbors with Matsukawa so he asked him if he knew of your whereabouts if you'd told him anything, but he shrugged, suggesting he ask your mum instead, who was always at home. He did as suggested and got out of his house to walk to yours.
Oikawa and you have never really interacted much. It wasn't like you didn't like him, you did and you wanted to be close with him but what you are was a problem. You restrained yourself from him simply because you were different, in an otherworldly way.
Your likes weren't even accepted and confirmed to the public until not even a decade ago when someone who sat on the presidential seat of your country finally had a right mind. You hadn't asked him of his thoughts regarding vampires, no, you were too scared to.
You didn't even kill or eat people, you managed to get by with just animals, so you believe that it makes you no lesser than just your regular human. But you were still hesitant to let him know, you'd only known him since the start of the summer break after your second year after all.
You dashed through the back door, covered in ox blood. You weren't mindful of what you wore again this time around, so it was going to be a pain trying to wash off the red stains on your light coloured shirt with a bunch of chemicals. You sigh, bracing yourself for another long session of washing your laundry.
One wouldn't think twice about taking off their clothes... or at least you didn't since you believed nobody else was inside the house but your mother. And you were wrong.

Yeah I think people were too quick to judge Ten Hag when he was happy to give Sancho time and space before. I also still don’t think he said anything wrong, saying someone didn’t train well, could mean anything it could even mean he was injured. Sancho kinda outed himself by saying it was anything other than a normal comment.
i have a lot to say about this whole thing cos there is a lot about it all. but what i will say is that when sancho was struggling in his personal life last season it was ten hag who let him take a break, it was ten hag who didn't tell the media anything, it was ten hag who sent him and united coaches to holland to help improve sancho's game away from media pressure, it was ten hag who let sancho come back when he was ready rather than when he wanted sancho back and it was ten hag who was over the moon when he was back because he knew that sancho was in a better place
i get why sancho would get frustrated when antony was playing over him on the right or garnacho/rashford on the left but instead of turning up late to training putting that statement out after the arsenal game n refusing to apologise he could've easily put his head down train hard and prove why he should be playing, just like garnacho fixed his attitude problems during pre season n is now a regular starter, just like rashford was late once for the game against wolves n was never late again, just like maguire used the summer to work on himself and improve his game after being dropped from captaincy n playing regularly n is now the most improved player
n that's what's the most frustrating thing about the whole situation is that jadon thought playing pro clubs n getting 300k a week was way more important n he's led ppl to believe it was all on ten hag when it was both their faults for both being extremely stubborn.
this is why i'm happy he's back at dortmund cos he's been wanting this move for a while and i hope he does regain his form n sort his behaviour issues out and comes back in the summer an improved man, i still love sancho and rate him very highly but yeh
