1, 8, 11, 18, 24, 36, 39, 62? 😊
omg yay thank you for sending these!
Favorite original club member? santana!! my #1 girlie of all time. a mean girl hiding a heart of gold and a bundle of insecurities who is given the time and grace to grow into herself? well yes!
8. Character you’re indifferent about? tina tbh. even when the glee club was smaller in season one, it felt like they were running out of things to do with her, and that problem only worsens as more characters are added over the course of the series. there's just simply not much going on there, to the point that i often feel like when people try to assign depth to her in fanon it rings hollow. there's nothing really to hate, but there's also nothing to really love or cling to imo.
11. Character that deserves better? quinn!!!! omg they abandoned my poor girl after season 2. there's clearly sooo many interesting things going on under the surface with her and they chose to couple her up with puck and call it a day?? she didn't even make it to the double gay wedding episode! those were her best friends! this is not to mention the fact that when quinn gets a chance to be funny, dianna consistently pulls it off and delivers comedic lines perfectly. they made her be so sad all the time!! where is the levity? conversely, where is the exploration of what they set up to be a truly oppressive home life? i know that a show of that size and scope can't possibly address every aspect of every character (it would be deeply annoying if it did) (and actually i think that's why there always has been such an active fan community around the show-- there's a lot of gaps to fill in), but with quinn they actually took the time to set so much stuff up that if they had followed up on even 3% of it, i would've been perfectly content. but alas!
18. Favorite noncanon couple? faberry! my official position on them is that quinn was fully in love with rachel for like.. most of the series, and that rachel didn't understand that/recognize that/reciprocate that until sometime post-canon, but, whether it's intentional in the text or not, there's a very rich faberry tapestry there. i mean you were singing that song to finn and only finn, right? hello??
24. What ship is completely underrated? i was gonna say samcedes, but i think people actually do like them a lot, so i will go with the truly hidden gem that is artie/kitty. somehow their respective brands of bitterness neutralized each other, and it was very cute and charming
36. Top 3 duets? lucky, brave, and be okay
39. Top 3 group numbers? tongue tied, just the way you are (the billy joel cover, not the bruno mars one), and you learn/you've got a friend
62. If you were head writer for Glee, what’s one thing you would’ve done differently? not to sound like mark wahlberg talking about 9/11, but season 4 wouldn't have gone down the way it did if i was there. if you're insisting on introducing new people to an already massive cast, at least act like you care about them a little! when ryder and marley talk to each other (and ryder and jake too tbh) it sounds like ai wrote a conversation between troubled teens. so if there had to be new people, i, as showrunner, would have insisted that even a modicum of effort was put into their stories. BUT i think actually if i had it my way, the new people added to hit the glee club magic number 12 would've been extras. there's already a big enough main cast, we don't need to be adding several half-assed arcs that no one cares about on top of that. what they did was try to split the difference between caring about the new people and making them accessories to the old people, and all they did was create a bunch of scenes to be fast-forwarded through. tv writing is hard though, i get it.

“Yeah? Well, fuck that. I still have fucking Mark Wahlberg in my head.”
Matt laughed. After a few months of not seeing each other, he was back in LA. Brian bought a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house for $2.850 million. It was private in the Laurel Canyon neighborhood. After weeks of waiting, he closed on the house, making it officially his. Matt couldn’t wait to see it! He drove over as soon as he could. Mike and his band helped him move in. They were treated to pizza and sodas since he couldn’t buy alcohol underage.
That was fine. They weren’t going to complain about not having a beer. It was a nice place. What did his father and Mike think about being empty nesters? It was hard for them. He jokingly told them he would come over to annoy them. They told him it was okay if he didn’t. He laughed then congratulated him on becoming an adult. Thank you.
The house was too quiet. Mike was expecting Brian to come in through the door any minute. But he knew he wasn’t. He was the first member of the band to have a child leave the nest. His room was empty. He had taken everything when he left.
His bed and bookcase were gone. He wasn’t going to walk in and ask him to turn his music down or have him run errands for him because he was going to be busy. Brian, what do you want for dinner? No, he was gone and he didn’t know how he felt about that. He had grown up and had a life that didn’t depend on him or Brad. A life with a career and a boyfriend. His album was officially released and it was on the country music charts. Brian Thomas by Brian Thomas.
He didn’t want to use his last name because he didn’t want to be accused of nepotism. The first openly gay transgender country music artist. That was quite a thing to be known as. Everyone was so proud of him. Mark had sent him a card congratulating him on his album. He opened it up and showed it to Matt before reading what he wrote out loud.
Brian, congratulations on your album! I can’t wait to see you on the basketball court. – Mark Wahlberg
“I’m going to put this in my kitchen.”
“That’s awesome! Did your dad give him your address?”
“No, it was forwarded by the post office. A little Marky Mark. I’m keeping this forever.”
Since his house was so private, they didn’t have to worry about the paparazzi. Matt asked him to be his boyfriend after talking to Brad and Leonardo about it while in Boston. They encouraged him to do it. He accepted right away. They kissed happily. Since he was still scared about coming out, they kept their dates at home. That meant cooking dinner together, watching movies, and being together in bed. He had some of his stuff at his place for when he stayed over.
They both liked trying out new things in the bedroom and experimenting. Was the relationship going to be long-term? They didn’t know because they weren’t thinking about that. At the moment, they were happy with what they had. Brian called him adorable and gorgeous. He loved hearing that. Everyone who knew about their relationship was thrilled they were so happy.
A few days later, Brian was in the emergency department for a suspected heart attack. He had been examined by a nurse, who took his vitals. She also listened to Brad and Mike talk about his symptoms. He had been complaining about chest pain and shortness of breath. They also noticed that he became fatigued more easily. He was usually very active and energetic, so they were very concerned. The nurse wanted to get a chest x-ray to look at his heart. She also ordered other tests.
He was not having a heart attack. That was ruled out from the tests. However, he did have a build-up of plaque in his arteries. That was preventing blood flow to and from his heart. He was at a dangerous risk of heart attack or a stroke. They also learned that the type of heart condition he had was caused by cigarette smoking. The chemicals used in cigarettes were a major factor in heart disease.
Thankfully, it was treatable by quitting smoking. The doctor also encouraged him to start exercising regularly. They were having trouble finding his medical records. Brad told her his son was transgender. His birth name was Bria Pitt. B-r-i-a. She thanked him and excused herself to look up his records. Brian put his hands over his face as Mike scolded him. He genuinely apologized. Thank you. They just didn’t want him to have him die because he was too young.
Brad decided he would join him in quitting smoking. They could support each other. What did he think about that? He thought that was a great idea. Good. When the doctor came back, she looked through his records and the medications he was taking. She was going to prescribe a calcium channel blocker to help relax the blood vessels that would allow oxygen to flow through.
She gave him information about the medication, along with information about quitting smoking. How long has he been a smoker? Since he was twelve or thirteen years old. How many packs did he go through a day? About one or two? He and his father sometimes shared a pack.
“Because of the health risks, I’m also going to stop smoking. I want to be a good role model for my son”, Brad said.
“Good for you. I am going to recommend nicotine patches for both of you because they have the best benefits for quitting smoking. I will also suggest getting nicotine lozenges and gum for extra benefits. You can pick which one you prefer.”
It was going to be hard. Their bodies were going to crave cigarettes. They would have to find ways to distract themselves. He was too young to be in the hospital for a heart attack or stroke. Mike mentioned he had just told him that. They laughed. After getting the prescription, they helped him up so he didn’t fall. They then walked to the pharmacy.
He would not be allowed to drive until they knew how the medication affected his body. That was to avoid car accidents. Since he was working with Mike, he would just go with him to the studio. The side effects of the medication would also cause him to feel lightheaded, so he needed to get up slowly from sitting or lying down. He could take the medication at the same time he took his ADHD medication, which was during dinner or before bed.
When they dropped him off at home, they were met by Matt. He had been trying to get a hold of them but they weren’t answering. The four of them went inside. It was after sitting down, Brian told him about being in the emergency room and why. He sighed and told him about how he had been telling him about quitting smoking.
“You are the third person to say that to me today. This is the kick in the ass I need.”
“Good. You can’t be a country singer if your lungs don’t work.”
“Do you know how many country singers smoked?”
“Yeah, that’s why a lot of them died from cancer!”
“I love you, too.”
They laughed. Mike got up and went to find his cigarettes, so he could confiscate them. Brian put his head on his shoulder while hugging a pillow. How was he feeling? He was tired but happy to be home.
When he came back, he had his cigarettes in his hand. What was he going to do with them? He would be throwing them in the garbage bin when he got home. They would be buried underneath the other garbage. They made plans for him to pick him up the next morning. He bent over and hugged him. I love you. He loved him too. After saying goodbye, he and Brad left.

My Childhood Trauma PTSD as Triggered by the Following Movie Montage
by BENJAMIN DREVLOW
That scene in American History X. You know the one. Or maybe it was Higher Learning, I always get those confused. That curb stomp scene always reminding me of the time I tripped and face-planted in the barn while corralling bull calves, to get castrated, my two front teeth chomping down on all that jagged concrete and manure, it adds a different flavor to the recurring nightmare I have, though in my case, usually nothing to do with race relations. I wonder if everybody else who watched that movie also missed the whole point of it. Except the Curb Stomp. Everybody remembers where they were when their stoner friend with big ideas about ending racism across the world made them watch the movie with the Curb Stomp.
~
Mel Gibson getting drawn and quartered in Braveheart. You may take our lives, but you will never take… our… FREE-DOM!
~
Mel Gibson ripping his shoulder out of its socket in Lethal Weapon.
~
Mel Gibson torturing the shit out of Jesus, then blaming the women and Jews for everything, including his drunk-driving and plummeting career options.
~
Fuck pretty much any Mel Gibson movie. Except maybe that one with him and James Gardner and Jody Foster and all their comedy hijinks. It’s the gambler one but not The Gambler. But now that I think about it, isn’t Jody Foster a big Mel Gibson apologist? So I guess fuck that movie too.
~
Any movie where somebody gets shot or stabbed or thumbed in the eyeball or has one or both of their eyeballs squeezed or ripped out, which always reminds me of that time I got elbowed right below my eye but also on the eyeball and it literally pushed in my eyeball a millimeter and I still get double vision to this day whenever I line up a shot playing pool or line up a screw to hang a photo on the wall or sometimes re-hang the toilet paper dispenser next to the toilet. I’d been playing pickup basketball and my buddy who was like four inches taller than me elbowed me on a rebound and like I say I went down and lay there on my back and then all the blood started pooling in my eye socket and I couldn’t see anything and my friend couldn’t see my eyeball and he kept hissing through his teeth grossed out by it but then telling me it would okay and the whole time lying there thinking I’m thinking about my eyeball I’m thinking of the scene in Any Given Sunday where the guy’s eyeball is just lying there on the football field. I’m thinking of that closeup all the way to the hospital when they unwrap the mummy gauze from around my head and the ER doctor breathes a sigh of relief after peeling off all the dried blood to reveal that I needed fifteen stitches and I’d broken my orbital bone, but I still had my eye.
~
Any movie where somebody’s sitting there reading a book before bed, watching TV, gossiping with girlfriends, when the camera pulls back only to zoom back in on the dark night window behind them—cue the string section.
~
If I had to choose one, I’m thinking of that one zombie movie, something 28 Days something but not the one about Sandra Bullock finding love with Viggo in rehab. It’s not even about the zombies. It’s about the dark night window, not to be confused with the Dark Knight window, sorry that was a shitty pun for no good reason whatsoever, but also maybe not completely random with the guy from 28 Days also having played the scarecrow in Batman Begins where he sprays people with a drug and makes them see their worst fears, which never really did it for me, at least not like the secluded house with the zombies lurking around. I grew up in a big old farmhouse out in the barrens of northern Wisconsin. Lots of windows, no shades. In so many ways I grew up in the dark. It wasn’t the zombies I worried about. It was the methheads. Which, sure, I guess if you’re getting technical about it, same thing, fine, you win, I’m scared of zombies.
~
The Zapruder film, but as replayed by Kevin Costner in Oliver Stone’s fever dream of a conspiracy theory. The magic bullet, back and to the left, back and to the left, back and to the left. How it gets stuck in my head, JFK’s exploding head replaced with my brother’s exploding head, sometimes my own, except unlike my brother and JFK, my head’s still mostly intact. Back and to the left, back and to the left. Sometimes I think about that too with that one Seinfeld episode with Keith Hernandez and the magic loogie, but usually the loogie gets replaced with a bullet and Kramer’s head gets replaced with my brother, mine, back and to the left.
~
The sound of the gun shots in the final scene of that Tom Hanks movie where he plays himself again, a good guy, a family guy, a sly sense of humor, but this time a mob hitman with a strained relationship with his oldest son. The look on Tom Hanks’ face walking back to the house from the ocean—having survived it all, the hit that his old mob boss Paul Newman had put out on him for putting a hit on his old mob boss’s son as played by James Bond who also played Ted Hughes in that movie about Sylvia Plath killing herself. But this is past all that, it’s the happy ending. They’re on beach somewhere, white sand, somebody’s house that Tom Hanks and his kid are going to live in now. The silence before and after. Jude Law! It’s Jude Law’s face, his eye all fucked up, how did it happen, I don’t really remember the specifics but I remember the specifics. Bang, bang, bang. I think it might’ve had something to do with Jude Law being a photographer, like one of those where you pose with your kid or something or say you get promoted to head CEO or godfather of the family. Smile. Click, click, except in this case with a gun.
~
The gunshot at the end of American Beauty, pretty much the same thing, different movie. Chris Cooper confusing Kevin Spacey as gay but before Kevin Spacey actually came out as gay and a sexual predator. Not that the latter necessarily had anything to do with the former. Neither in the movie nor real life, well not really, but sorta. You get the point.
~
Jared Leto as Angel Face getting his face smashed in by Ed Norton as Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden’s split personality in Fight Club. Not so much Jared Leto, but the wet mushy sounds of it. That part on the audio commentary where Chuck Palahniuk and David Fincher defend the violence of the movie, Fincher pointing out that he was not glorifying violence, he was making it realistic. That’s what it sounds like to punch your opponent into the concrete, Fincher says and Palahniuk laughs and agrees. Don’t worry I’m not going to make any puns about the first rule of fight club.
~
That part of that one weird depressing Robin Williams’s movie where Robin Williams’s kids get killed in a car accident while backing out of the driveway on the way to school. The one where Robin Williams later on gets plowed over by a truck going the wrong way while Robin Williams is out trying to help another couple who’d been injured in a different car accident, but before all that his wife kills herself because she can’t take it and then Robin Williams goes to the suicide afterlife to save her. But then there’s fucking Cuba Gooding Jr. who—spoiler alert—turns out to be the ghost/angel of his dead son who then explains to Robin Williams that his wife/Cuba’s mother can’t be saved because she killed herself. It doesn’t matter that she had a pretty fucking good reason too, she’s still stuck face down floating around in that black swamp of bodies of everybody else’s killed themselves and nobody’s getting to heaven. That shit really messed me up—not the car accidents, but the afterlife for selfish losers like me who kill themselves. And/or my brother.
~
The bulging vein in Tom Cruise’s head from Magnolia. Respect the Cock and Tame the Pussy, Respect the Cock and Tame the Pussy. I think probably my therapist would have some thoughts about all this, and some questions. Questions and thoughts.
~
That one version of A Christmas Carol where the Ghost of Christmas Past undoes his robe to show off the alien children living under his robe.
~
I got the worst set of blue balls you could imagine while taking my best friend’s girlfriend to Baz Lurman’s remake of Romeo and Juliet. That Romeo and Juliet. I missed most of it, I kept having to go to the bathroom to masturbate in agony and to no avail. Leo and Claire Danes are hot and heavy on an acid trip, and every time my best friend’s girlfriend reaches for a handful of popcorn she makes sure to wipe the butter off on the inside of my upper thigh. This is what I get for being the good guy of falling on the grenade for my best friend, the grenade in this case being Shakespeare and my best friend’s hatred of literature.
~
Mark Wahlberg’s flaccid rotten dick in Boogie Nights.
~
The Secret of the Crying Game but not in a transphobic way. No, it’s the smallness of it what got me back when I watched it as a teenager. The tenderness. The growing tent in my pants at its sudden appearance on the screen. Maybe you don’t believe me but I was a naïve podunk kid from off the farm. I didn’t have cable. I didn’t have access to the internet. His/her (now their) secret opened up a lot of questions for me. I often dream of dressing up in drag and someone sucking my little bitty dick and if that makes me a little bit gay or maybe bi or what’s it called, body dysmorphic. I mean I guess it doesn’t matter anymore, it’s the new millennium, we’re all a bit sexually confused aren’t we?
~
This one porno my friends and I watched at somebody’s uncle’s cabin up in the U.P. for a three-on-three basketball tournament. The Snapping Pussy. The sound her vagina made, like somebody really dramatic at clicking their tongue and slurping a half-empty malt the same time. The scene of us boys all sitting there with our boners watching a porn and wanting to masturbate but not because we were all boys and we were afraid we’d be gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with being a little bit gay.
~
There was this made-for-TV movie, me six years old and home alone while my big brother, supposed who’d to’ve been baby-sitting me, the only time he ever babysat me that I can remember, maybe because his one time—that time—he didn’t actually babysit me. He went out to a party, while I watched the made-for-tv movie about some kid who’d watched his mother get murdered, and then goes mute, keeps drawing these pictures of Peter Pan and Captain Hook. The kid’s grandfather, one of those big hooks, like the one in I Know What You Did Last Summer, but this was long before that, though I’m not sure it was before the book. Did you know that there was a book I Know What You Did Last Summer? I mean this isn’t about the book or the movie, this is about that kid whose grandfather had molested his daughter for years and then as an adult gutted her with a fishhook and then how he’d then come back to finish the job with his mute grandkid, I don’t know how this movie ever got green-lighted (green-lit?) for TV, but then it’s weird to even think about those made-for-tv movies and if they actually existed or if I’m just making this whole thing up, but then my brother, we had a walk-in basement at the time, this being before I’d accidently burned that house down with two space heaters stolen from the barn, before my brother’d killed himself, he’d come back late, or probably it was only eight or nine, but I was young and alone out in the woods where we lived, and he’d come back through the basement, which was attached to the family room, where I’d been watching and then all of a sudden that kid on TV was being stocked by his granddad with a fish hook and the door to the basement was opening, and for god knows why I’d turned off all the lights to watch the scary movie by myself, and it turns out it was just my brother who’d go on to kill himself in like a year, maybe six months, and he was just playing a little prank on me, or maybe he’d just come through the basement for some reason, he was always hanging out down there and tinkering around with things, but in my mind, I can remember that exact look on his face, that smirk, even in the dark, the light from the television in a blacked-out room, a blacked out house, reflecting off those pop-bottle glasses of his, the shiny too-big-for-his-face silver frames. My mother always tells me I should try to remember the happy times I had with my brother, and honestly, I can’t, I can only remember that smirk, those glasses, the handle turning a moment before he appeared.
~
Any and all sequels where it turns out that the dead character didn’t actually die at all, or maybe it’s magic, or maybe there’s time travel.
~
Any happy ending ever.
~
Every ending in my worst nightmares involves everyone I’ve ever loved or hated, their faces turning to snake faces. Snakeheads, snake arms, snake butts. Snakes snakes snakes. They slip out of their clothes and come up from under my bed, slither under my covers. They bite me, they kiss me, poison me, they consume me whole and regurgitate my bones. That’s how they always end. Me dead and abandoned.
~
That scene in the first Indiana Jones with Indiana Jones and getting trapped in the cave with all the snakes. I hate snakes. All my worst nightmares turn to snakes. Fuck snakes. This all might have something to do with my undersized penis. If you want to go down that path. The Secret of My Crying Game.
~
Has Mel Gibson ever made a movie with snakes? I don’t know, you tell me, but fuck that movie if he did. Mel Gibson is snakey enough on his own.

Lights, camera, lockdown! All the films I watched at home this November.
Last month, the UK went on a one month down lockdown, causing cinemas to shut and new releases to be put on hold.
Tumblr media
In fact, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was the only multi million dollar film to be released this year. It’s painful to think that Dune was supposed to be released almost two weeks from now and that we have to wait several months to see the sci fi film hit screens. Despite the post poned releases and closing of cinema chains, there are still some great films I hadn’t seen and used last month as an opportunity to look into them. Even though I didn’t see as much as I did in October, the quality of the films I managed to see this month is high.
His House (2020) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Starting off reasonably well with this horror brought to you by Netflix that centers the life around two immigrants and a spirit haunting the new lives they’re trying to build in the UK. It’s certainly a new perspective that I haven’t seen in horror and definitely isn’t a film for the fainted hearted for some of the scenes in this are genuinely terrifying. The overall message was thought provoking and poignant as it sort of spoke for those who’ve lost their lives attempting to seek asylum and those whoa are still struggling to find a new home.
His House is available to watch on Netflix. Score: 9/10
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight (2020) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Definitely one of the most surprisingly good films I watched this month, Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is a classic Netflix horror from Poland. The film follows a group of Polish teenagers addicted to social media who are sent to a camp to curb their addiction. However, when on a hike through the woods, one of the teens goes missing and without a phone to call for help, the kids are forced to face two grotesque monsters feeding upon humans. From start to finish, this film was highly entertaining and had a good structure to it. There were no gimmicks or cliches and it’s definitely a film I’d recommend to just about anyone.
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is available to watch on Netflix.
Score: 10/10
The Ring (2002) as seen on BBC iPlayer
Tumblr media
Gore Verbinski’s (A Cure for Wellness, Pirates of the Caribbean) infamous horror is a cult classic and must watch for scary movie fans. Usually horror films can be too gimmicky and borderline cringey without an ounce of substance to them. However, The Ring is surprisingly good in that it possesses a deep narrative with three dimensional characters, good acting and wonderful direction. When a journalist’s (Naomi Watts) niece dies in unknown circumstances, she embarks on a journey to discover a horrifying tape that if watched, kills you in a week’s time. The box office sales for this film speaks for itself seeing as the film made nearly $130 million when it was released back in 2002. The Ring is certainly not for the faint hearted, so if horror isn’t your thing, I’d advise you stay well away from it.
Score: 9/10
Misery (1990) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Stephen King’s Misery is turned into an unsettling thriller starring Kathy Bates and James Caan. Author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) ends up getting caught in a snow storm, that seems his car veer off the road, leaving him in a critical state. However, a seemingly caring and selfless woman, Annie (Kathy Bates) takes him in, using her work as a nurse to care for him. It turns out that Annie is a super fan of Paul’s work and the care she has for him soon turns nasty and sadistic, leaving Paul in a panicked state for he is in the middle of nowhere with a practical psychopath. I wouldn’t say Misery is one of best adaptations of King’s novels. There are better pieces of work by Stephen King that have been made into movies such as IT, The Green Mile and 1922. The pace was quite slow and the fact that it took place in only one settling detracted from the progression of the film. However, it’s entertaining, well cast and had a decent story to it.
Score: 7/10
Drive (2011) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
Drive is 1000% one of the best films I’ve seen this year, in my entire life in fact. It’s incredibly bold, ambitious, vivid, subtle and heart wrenching at moments. A stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) is torn between the world of crime he partakes in and the love he has for a young woman (Carey Mulligan) that lives in the apartment next door to his. The subtlety and sensitivity that both Gosling and Mulligan brought to this film was so pure and authentic to their characters, whilst bringing an underlying sadness to the entirety of the film. By the end of the film you want to cry but aren’t sure why and these sorts of films are rare to find. The sound track and SFX in this are unreal, again adding to the confirmation that this film is one of a kind.
Score: 12/10
Time (2020) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
I was delighted to see Amazon Prime had put this straight onto their service seeing as I’d missed out on Time during the London Film Festival two months ago. This is one of the most moving and deep pieces of work I’ve seen this year. Time is a documentary filmed over 20 years that details the life of a woman trying to seek justice for her husband who was put in prison for life for armed robbery. Not only is she fighting for her husband, but also her four sons, two of which weren’t even born when their father was put away in jail. Fox Rich lives in Louisiana, one of America’s toughest states when it comes to the criminal justice system. Sentences are of some of the highest in the entire country and are especially harsher to people of colour. Fox and her husband took the fatal and desperate decision to rob a bank in a bid to support their business and family. This drastic choice took Fox’s husband away from his family and for 2 decades, Fox spent time trying to get her husband out of jail. The thing that moved me the most about this documentary was her sons; four beautiful, smart and driven men who grew up without a father. It made me wonder how proud Fox must be of her kids and to see her fight for her husband and remain loyal to him is enough love to last two lifetimes.
Time is available to watch on Amazon Prime now.
Score: 10/10
The Departed (2006) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Throughout this two and a half hour film I was wondering how they had managed to get Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg to do a film together. And the answer is that this epic and high profile movie was directed by the infamous Martin Scorsese. It’s a mystery why I hadn’t seen this film sooner, seeing as it was a huge hit during its release making a staggering $291 million worldwide during its release. This is definitely DiCaprio’s best film (next to Revolutionary Road and The Revenant) and his performance was incredibly punchy and strong throughout. Everyone in this film was top class and the dialogue fitted well with each character with a natural story progression throughout. A top notch, Hollywood, must watch film.
Score: 10/10
Murder by Numbers (2002) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
One of Ryan Gosling’s earliest films follows two high school students committing a sadistic murder simply to see just how it feels. Detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) is put on the case to solve the murder and quickly pieces the case together, leading her to Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling) and Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt) two students at the same high school. I wouldn’t say this film was bad, however the ending played a big part in the overall quality of the film. It had a good pace and characters, however the ending definitely let down the film for it was rushed and unaligned to the rest of the film. Ryan Gosling’s performance at the tender age of 22 was pretty decent and definitely stated to everyone else his ability as an actor for years to come.
Score: 7/10
All Good Things (2010) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
As you can tell by now, I went on a Ryan Gosling whip this month. All Good Things is the true story of David Marks (Ryan Gosling), whose wife Katie (Kirsten Dunst) disappears and still to this day, has never been found. Marks was the prime suspect in the disappearance case but was never found guilty and lives a free man. Even though the story was interesting and the performances good, the fact this is a Weinstein Company Film made it hard to watch, especially with the totally unnecessary nudity and sex scenes that put Kirsten Dunst at its forefront. The film lacked a clear resolution and was left completely open ended like the case of Katie Marks, which is understandable, however not when it comes to making a good film.
Score: 6/10
Borat (2006) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
After finding the second Borat film to be highly entertaining, I decided to watch the first one and was certainly not left disappointed. The first Borat film introduces us to Kazakstan reporter Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his first visit to America, whilst taking in all the americanisms to report back to his own country. Soon his pursuit turns to Pamela Anderson whose doing a book signing across in California. The comedy has many jaw dropping moments and sees Cohen above and beyond the boundaries of comedy to bring the character of Borat to life.
Score: 10/10
Boy Erased (2018) as seen on Sky Cinema
Tumblr media
If there’s one film worth watching on this list, it’d be Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased. This film is the product of a real understanding of film language and the ability to make a beautiful and heart felt story. Edgerton is a well known actor, but has taken time to go behind the camera as well as in front of it in this Golden Globe nominated picture starring the likes of Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Troye Sivan, Xavier Dolan and Joe Alwyn. Like HELLO if that cast isn’t making you immediately turn off this site right now to find Boy Erased, then I don’t know what will. The film based on a true story follows Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges) and his time spent at a gay conversion centre with fellow homosexuals Gary (Troye Sivan) and Jon (Xavier Dolan). Jared’s father (Russell Crowe) is a pastor he and his wife (Nicole Kidman) take their religion rather seriously, which is why Jared has been forced to seek help for his sexuality. It’s a hard concept to swallow, especially in this day and age when most parents, religious or not, are starting to become more acceptable of their children’s sexuality. This film exposes the reality beyond that and how some parents feel their child is damaged by something completely normal and feel the need to seek help for it. Boy Erased is made with sensitivity and beautiful acting from an a class cast. All round, it’s a perfect film.
Score: 11/10
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
I was a little confused starting this film to see it in Swedish, as I thought I was watching the David Fincher film of the same title. However, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was original a book and the first adapation of it for film was directed by Niels Arden Oplev, two years before Fincher made his version, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. However, the fact that this version was in Swedish didn’t detract from the thrilling story spun onto screen. The three hour movie follows a journalist whose been hired to solve the mystery of a missing girl who is part of a high profile family. A young female hacker who once hacked the journalist and practically ruined his career, joins him along the way and the pair of them uncover a long string of untold secrets that see blood being split amongst numerous women. It’s one of the best thrillers I’ve ever seen and a must watch if you enjoyed Fincher’s version.
Score: 10/10
Still Alice (2014) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
A highly anticipated film on my part, Still Alice is an arresting and moving film about a mother struggling with on set Alzheimers. Julianne Moore scooped up a Best Actress Award at the Academy Awards in 2015, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance as Dr Alice Howland and her battle with Alzheimers at the age of 50. Kristen Stewart plays her daughter and Alec Baldwin her husband and their performances are equal to Julianne Moore’s. Overall, this was a touching piece that had soooo much depth to it and yet carried a satisfying simplicity throughout it.
Score: 10/10
Enemy (2013) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
I heard about Enemy’s synopsis via a YouTube video and was throughly excited to watch it on hearing it was directed by Denis Villeneuve, a master director when it comes to thrillers and sci fi films. Even though Enemy was difficult to fully interpret, I still enjoyed the story and performance Jake Gyllenhaal brought to the table as a man who meets another man that looks exactly like him. There’s some pure mind fuckery that plays throughout the film as you’re left questioning who is this other man or if there are even two men at all. If anything, it’s an exploration of a man having a double life, wrapped up in some sinister secrets and tied between two women. All of Denis Villeneuve’s work is exceptional and Enemy is no different. A must watch for thriller lovers.
Score: 10/10
A Star is Born (2018) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born certainly wins the award for making me cry the most this month. The last version I saw of this film starred Judy Garland and James Mason and was centred around a musical actress and the rocky relationship she had with her actor husband. That 1954 version possessed a lot of brilliance and it was easy to compare it to the more modern version starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Who would’ve thought these two could be such an authentic on screen couple? The songs, the lyrics and the acting that these two brought to this picture was on another level, it was incredible from start to finish. Obviously the fact that this film had been done 4 times before honed the quality of the film, however Bradley Cooper’s direction and ability to bring out the best in Lady Gaga definitely makes this version of A Star is Born the best one yet. This directorial debut was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Lady Gaga was handed the award for Best Music for a motion picture. Warning: you will cry whilst watching this or at least afterwards.
Score: 12/10
Sorry to Bother You (2018) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Netflix certainly came through this month when it put Boots Riley’s fanatical dark comedy Sorry to Bother You on its streaming service. It’s honestly like nothing I’ve ever seen before and the innuendo and hidden messages within this film make it something that you can watch several times and never get bored of. Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) gets a job as a telemarketer who gets promoted to a “power caller” and through pride and greed, ends up abandoning his ideologies and friends completely. The film speaks for the gentrification of Oakland, California and capitalistic society we live in today. There are many hidden messages amongst the film that at first are hard to decipher, but soon you realise these messages are as clear as day within our own society. Lakeith Stanfield stars alongside Tessa Thompson, Steve Yeun and Armie Hammer, not a cast you’d usually put together but one that certainly worked. Sorry to Bother You is highly entertaining and will definitely make you laugh out loud at points and have you questioning your laughter right after.
Score: 10/10
The Florida Project (2017) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
I’m starting to think that films made between 2017 and 2018 are some of the best ever made and the Florida Project falls into that. I heard about this film through one of my favourite actors and was glad for the recommendation as this film is one of the best I’ve seen all year. The colours and character dynamics are strong and vivid throughout, as we follow the lives of people living on an apartment complex whilst speaking for the child poverty that plagues American society today. Willem Dafoe, who plays the complex’s handy man and security guard, even earned himself a Best Supporting Actor Award at the 2018 Academy Awards.
Score: 10/10
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (2014) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Usually I’d pass on a Charlie Kaufman film, seeing as they make no sense, however I felt that it was time I delved into this cult classic starring Kate Winslet, Jim Carrey, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood. It’s a really well made film with a clear and distinct message to it that’s represented in some phenomenal filmmaking techniques. The plot line of this film follows a man trying to erase a past lover and his memories of her get wiped away physically before your eyes on screen. This film is certainly a conversation starter and one I’d recommend to just about anyone.
Score: 9/10
Moonrise Kingdom (2012) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Wes Anderson’s wonderful mind is depicted in this endearing narrative about two children running away from home. This has to one of Wes Anderson’s most iconic films and next to The Grand Budapest Hotel, it’s definitely one of the films you think of when you think of Anderson’s work. His work is known for having well rounded stories, beautiful shots and A List casts, with Moonrise Kingdom being no expection as Anderson manages to squeeze Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Kietel and a young Lucas Hedges into this film. If you’ve seen any of Wes Anderson’s work and not Moonrise Kingdom, get on it now. No, seriously, now.
Score: 10/10
Jarhead (2005) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Sam Mendes’ war film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx translates the lives of US soldiers in Iraq onto screen and the brain washing their government has done to boost the importance of the US military and the service soldiers are doing to their country. Jake Gyllenhaal’s execution in this film is a reflection of his ability as a great actor. He always has this patient and gritty approach to his work that makes him addicting to watch on screen. There’s an entire video on YouTube about Jake Gyllenhaal’s eyes and the way they communicate his emotions on screen. This is certainly present in Jarhead, as the anger, frustration, disappointment and despair is held within Jake Gyllenhaal’s eyes throughout. Jarhead was originally a memoir written by a US solider named Anthony Swofford. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the open ended resolution to the film and the stagnant progression of Jake Gyllenhaal’s character. He literally didn’t achieve anything, which I suppose is the point of the film and how the honour that soldiers who went to Iraq were supposed to feel, is more of a fantasy than a reality.
Score: 9/10
Silence (2016) as seen on BBC iPlayer
Tumblr media
This film was truly summit else and a refreshing turn on genre from highly acclaimed filmmaker, Martin Scorsese. Silence certainly proved that he has the ability to be more sensitive with his films and can tells stories outside his usual New York mobster type movies. The film tracks the journey of two Portuguese missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) in the 17th Century who go to Japan looking for one of their mentors (Liam Neeson). However in this era, Christians faced persecution in Japan and were practically slaughtered for not following the country’s religion of Buddhism. The priests’ journey is perilous and heart rendering as they are forced to abandon their own religion in order to save their own lives and the lives of others. Despite the film being just over 160 minutes, it’s an inspiring story and one that is told in a tactful way. To believe this is a film is quite hard, as the accuracy of it makes it closer to reality than just a film itself.
Score: 8/10
Lynn + Lucy (2019) as seen on BBC iPlayer
Tumblr media
This film recently came out in UK cinemas and was put onto BBC iPlayer due to lockdown. I found it to be interesting and enjoyed the new perspective it gave to quite a simple story. Lynn and Lucy have been friends for almost their entire lives, and when Lucy’s baby boy dies in unexplained circumstances, it drives a wedge between her relationship with Lynn, as people in their neighbourhood accuse her of being a child murderer. Eventually, Lynn stats to believe the rumours herself, leaving her best friend behind and favouring the opinions of those who hardly know her. A great debut and British film, Lynn + Lucy is profound story of friendship.
Score: 8/10
Revolutionary Road (2008) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Revolutionary Road has a metric score of 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, which I find quite offensive as the film nearly falls into the “thanks but no thanks” category of films. Directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kate Winslet alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, I don’t see what’s not to like. I only clocked halfway through the film why DiCaprio had been cast with Kate Winslet (Titanic, duh) and it made their on screen chemistry more prominent for me. I always say this about EVERY SINGLE Leonardo DiCaprio film I watch, but his performance in this was unreeeaaal. His character went somewhere intense and never returned, making the hardship on screen 10 times more powerful. There’s a scene where him and Winslet’s character are in a full blown argument and DiCaprio’s rage was on another level. Incredibly authentic and honest, Revolutionary Road showcases a wonderful example of when two masterful actors come together to make something great.
Score: 10/10
Hillbilly Elegy (2020) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Hillbilly Elegy recently got torn to shreds by critics as it was released on Netflix the other week, and I half agree with what most are saying about it, but also feel there’s unnecessary criticisms about this film. The film is based on a memoir of a Yale Law student, J.D Vance (Gabriel Basso) who comes from rough beginnings and ends up building the life he so desired from a young age. His mother (Amy Adams) is a destructive drug addict who’s moods change frequently so that she’s constantly at war with her own mother (Glenn Close) and two children (Haley Bennett and Gabriel Basso). The story follows J.D’s return to his home town to claim his mother from a hospital after she over dosed on heroin. The only problem is, he has an interview with a law firm from Washington the following morning and has to choose between taking care of his mother and landing his dream job. Sounds pretty intriguing, right? And it truly is. The film is laced with conflict and great performances from everyone, however critics have blasted this film with hate, saying that it doesn’t ring true to the entire American experience of living in poverty, without healthcare and enough money to bring food to the table. The fact that J.D made it to Harvard and now works for a successful enterprise somehow detracts from his struggle as a child, which I think is complete BS. I think this film should be taken for more face value than as a political story. It’s a straight talking, rags to riches tale that proves with hard work and dedication, you can transform your struggles into success. One critic had the audacity to say that “Selling out your origins is a kind of white trash cosplay because you were lucky enough to get out”. The irony of this is that the critic herself is white and it suggests had JD been a person of colour, it’d made a better film, which isn’t the kind of world where I want to live in when stories of people of colour are used as poverty porn rather than something to enjoy or learn from. My only criticism of this film would be the pace of conflict within the film and how things went from 0-100 waaay too quickly. This can happen in real life, but on screen it tends to look sloppy and rushed.
Score: 9/10

And that’s it! A rather short list for this month, but as the year draws to a close, I’m just really excited for the new films hopefully hitting screens next year. Seen you soon!

ALWAYS THE WEAKEST LINK
I find it interesting when these types of messages spew from certain Black males who live a life of total hypocrisy. Antonio subscribes to: -Colorism, he's never dated a woman as dark as himself and leans on the ideologies of preference -Although he's sexually fluid, he is quite homophobic (despite having gay friends and acquaintances) and subscribes to the notep notions of a gay agenda -His first wife was Italian, to date he still fancies White women but stop fucking them on the premise that he wants his children to have "color" -His second long term girlfriend who is full Korean, wears Blackness like a costume (box braids, cornrows, etc), and she still parades his grandmother on her IG like it's her foster mom. He let's that shit go unchecked -The last White woman he played house with back in 2017 is 6 years his senior and took care of him financially while he acted as the surrogate Dad for soccer practice for her biracial son (he'll tell you a Mark Wahlberg story connected to all of that) - He helicopters Black woke women on Twitter and IG for sport, but he's still innately classist, sexist, and full of empty pan African machismo -Layllen, a woman who considers him a friend and has often extended her home and space to him, is someone he chides as being unrealistic and flighty because she practices positive thought and manifestations. She has a plush place to stay at the W in L.A., while he's still a Hobosexual (always with the misplaced priorities) -His Talent agent is a White woman who regularly sends him out on auditions for officer or soldier roles, he's had one single television placement in 2019 - His roommates are White - His writing mentors are White - His dick tingles when he's the only Black body in the room, because he's wildly performative -He enjoys and engages in tokenism - He believes in 2A and thinks him being a gun enthusiast is a social and racial equalizer For Black men and women He is not a protector, he's a predator. Mr. Aaron is 35 year old wannapreneur in the throws of life giving him back everything that he's taken from others. He's a habitual liar and manipulator. Social media is his safe space, because online he can be anything he wants to be for those gullible enough to subscribe to his fairytale. Regrettably, he's been the biggest mistake of my life from the first DM he sent me in 2012. He really could have just left me alone, but he targets kindness. He exploits those who sacrifice to help him, and sooner than later his sociopathy is going to elevate to a criminal level. But yeahhhhh, how are we going to protect our women?

Okay, so @thomas-newtie-gangster tagged me in an alternate questionnaire
Pets-- Yes, 2 cats and 3 kittens (oof, I know I'm a cat-lady, but the 3 kittens are my Dad's the older 2 are mine, but I dont live with them all year unfortunately because of school)
Most Frequently Quoted Vine: Oh man, all of them. My 3 quad-mates all only talk in vines (seriously). However, it's probably between "Two bros, vhillin in a hot tub, 5 feet apart coz theyre not gay" OR "Dis bitch empty, YEET"
Most Daring Thing You've Ever Done: Oh man. Um. I've slept on this suspension bridge (yes, it sways with every little fucking movement and it's hella uncomfortable)
Tumblr media
(pic credit to google, but I know that it was this particular fucking bridge)
Least Favorite Movie: It's a tie between Idiocracy (fuck this movie I LOST ALL OF MY GODDAMN BRAIN CELLS WATCHING IT IN FILM CLASS) and James Cameron's Avatar, the one with the blue people? OH. MY. GOD. I HATE THIS MOVIE. It's so fucking boring. I never fall asleep during movies, except this one.
Favorite American Actor(s): Oh wow this is hard. Josh Hutcherson (I've lived this man since Journey to the Center of the Earth 1, okay??? My grandma met his mom, man). I WOULD DIE FOR JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT THANK YOU. Jared Padalecki. Chris Pratt. Steve Carell. Orlando Bloom. Ben Stiller. Johnny Depp. Chris Pine. Mark Wahlberg. Matt Damon. *off-pitch screech:* DOES MARK FISCHBACH COUNT
Favorite American Actress(es): FIRST AND FUCKING FOREMOST-- Carrie Fisher (no, I'm still not okay. She was my childhood hero and crush). Anna Faris (she's so funny and cute and I love her, especially in What's Your Number) Susan Sarandon (jesus I want to be this woman), Jennifer Aniston (she's fucking gorgeous and talented!). Kim Rhodes (she is my swearing Disney mom and I love her). Leslie Mann (shes adorable, I loved her in Blockers and The Other Woman)
Favourite British Actor(s): Thomas Brodie-Sangster (this is obvious, I love him and have since Love, Actually), Collin Firth (MR. DARCY!!!), Allan Rickman (I'm not crying, shut up). Skandar Keynes (SO WHAT CHILDHOOD CRUSH, SHOOOOOSH). Hugh Grant (basically he had my heart in that scene in Love, Actually where he dances). JUST BASCIALLY THE ENTIRE CAST OF LOVE, ACTUALLY. Kit Harrington (JON FUCKING SNOW, PEOPLE).
Favourite British Actress(es): Helen Mirren, [Dame] Judy Dench, Julie Andrews, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton (her in the tv show Cranford is just perfect), Natalie Dormer (FUUUUUCK I AM GAY FOR HER)
Favorite Actor(s)/Actress(es) From Elsewhere: Gal Gadot from Israel (oh my god she is a fucking goddess of strength and beauty and kindness). Liam Neeson from Ireland (jesus after I learned the full story behind his performance in Love, Actually [shut up about that movie, Cas] I understood how well he did that role, like... holy shit).
Longest Time Gone Without Sleep: I got really fucking close to 5 days straight on a dare. Almost. Don't do it, kids. You start hearing and seeing things.
Worst Food You've Ever Eaten: I got food poisoning from undercooked chicken at a rock concert once. But taste-wise is MAYO. I HATE IT.
Earliest Memory: Okay, this is gonna get a tad bit depressing. So I remember watching 9/11 on tv with my grandma in the dark (my grandma turned the lights off out of respect) in the morning. I remember seeing the buildings smoking on the small little screen and my grandma holding my hand and crying. I didnt know what it was at the time (shit i probably thought it was a movie).
Favorite Pizza Topping: Look, I work at a pizza place. Half of my pizza is pepperoni and mushroom, the other half is bacon and pineapple [you like it or you dont, but man it's my pizza. You dont like it? Okay, cool, that's your thing. I dont understand why this is such a big deal].
Dumbest Thing You've Seen/Heard/Had Happen To You At School: Too many. There's... jesus theres just too many in just high school alone. But here's a story instead: Once, in high school, I was in a class I was a TA for, sitting on the counter while the class took a test, so it was dead silent. And my mom texted me something that was so fucking funny (I tried so hard not to laugh but I couldn't help it, I basically exploded), I fell off the counter laughing and excused myself into the hallways just to explode into laughter. OR The time my new teacher got our entire class to troll one student. So this kid (let's call him Slacker) would come in late every day (or, every day that he actually decided to show up) with McDonald's (it was the first class of the day) and he would ALWAYS miss test days. So one day that was supposed to be a test day, Slacker didnt show up, and our teacher (this man was a fucking LEGEND) was like "if you see Slacker, tell him we took the test today, but we're actually gonna take it tomorrow" and we did. So the next day, Slacker walked in 15 mins late, McDs in hand, and we all just kinda smirked at him and we took the test and damn he was PISSED. But sometimes he would show up for school, but instead of coming into class he would wander the halls, singing hella off-key and super loud. And we all knew it was him, too because security would chase him when he sang too loud and they found him. It was great. Except our last names were similar so everyone always thought we were twin brother and sister, because even though we looked alike, we were completely different. No. If he was my brother, I would've put his ass up for adoption a long time ago.
Okay, that was longer than I thought it would be. I tag @iamyourbloodydealer @sadsoapart @endless-shipper-shipping-things :)
