Ten Things We Hate About Trad Pub
Often when I say “I’ve started a small press; we publish the works of those who have trouble breaking into traditional publishing!” what people seem to hear is “me and a bunch of sad saps couldn’t sell our books in the Real World so we’ve made our own place with lower standards.” For those with minimal understanding of traditional publishing (trad pub), this reaction is perhaps understandable? But, truly, there are many things to hate about traditional publishing (and, don’t get me wrong - there are things to love about trad pub, too, but that’s not what this list is about) and it’s entirely reasonable for even highly accomplished authors to have no interest in running the gauntlet of genre restrictions, editorial control, hazing, long waits, and more, that make trad pub at best, um, challenging, and at worst, utterly inaccessible to many authors - even excellent ones.
Written in collaboration with @jhoomwrites, with input from @ramblingandpie, here is a list of ten things that we at Duck Prints Press detest about trad pub, why we hate it, and why/how we think things should be different!
(Needless to say, part of why we created Duck Prints Press was to...not do any of these things... so if you’re a writer looking for a publishing home, and you hate these things, too, and want to write with a Press that doesn’t do them...maybe come say hi?)
-
1. Work lengths dictated by genre and/or author experience.
Romance novels can’t be longer than 90,000 words or they won’t sell! New authors shouldn’t try to market a novel longer than 100,000 words!
A good story is a good story is a good story. Longer genre works give authors the chance to explore their themes and develop their plots. How often an author has been published shouldn’t put a cap on the length of their work.
-
2. Editors assert control of story events...except when they don’t.
If you don’t change this plot point, the book won’t market well. Oh, you’re a ten-time bestseller? Write whatever you want, even if it doesn’t make sense we know people will buy it.
Sometimes, a beta or an editor will point out that an aspect of a story doesn’t work - because it’s nonsensical, illogical, Deus ex Machina, etc. - and in those cases it’s of course reasonable for an editor to say, “This doesn’t work and we recommend changing it, for these reasons…” However, when that list of reasons begins and ends with, “...because it won’t sell…” that’s a problem, especially because this is so often applied as a double standard. We’ve all read bestsellers with major plot issues, but those authors get a “bye” because editors don’t want to exert to heavy a hand and risk a proven seller, but with a new, less experienced, or worse-selling author, the gloves come off (even though evidence suggests time and again that publishers’ ability to predict what will sell well is at best low and at worst nonexistent.)
-
3. A billion rejection letters as a required rite of passage (especially when the letters aren't helpful in pinpointing why a work has been rejected or how the author can improve).
Well, my first book was rejected by a hundred Presses before it was accepted! How many rejection letters did you get before you got a bite? What, only one or two? Oh…
How often one succeeds or fails to get published shouldn’t be treated as a form of hazing, and we all know that how often someone gets rejected or accepted has essentially no bearing on how good a writer they are. Plenty of schlock goes out into the world after being accepted on the first or second try...and so does plenty of good stuff! Likewise, plenty of schlock will get rejected 100 times but due to persistence, luck, circumstances, whatever, finally find a home, and plenty of good stuff will also get rejected 100 times before being publishing. Rejections (or lack there of) as a point of pride or as a means of judging others needs to die as a rite of passage among authors.
-
4. Query letters, for so many reasons.
Summarize all your hard work in a single page! Tell us who you’re like as an author and what books your story is like, so we can gauge how well it’ll sell based on two sentences about it! Format it exactly the way we say or we won’t even consider you!
For publishers, agents, and editors who have slush piles as tall as Mount Everest...we get it. There has to be a way to differentiate. We don’t blame you. Every creative writing class, NaNoWriMo pep talk, and college lit department combine to send out hundreds of thousands of people who think all they need to do to become the next Ernest Hemingway is string a sentence together. There has to be some way to sort through that pile...but God, can’t there be a better way than query letters? Especially since even with query letters being used it often takes months or years to hear back, and...
-
5. "Simultaneous submissions prohibited.”
No, we don’t know when we’ll get to your query, but we’ll throw it out instantly if you have the audacity to shop around while you wait for us.
The combination of “no simultaneous submissions” with the query letter bottleneck makes success slow and arduous. It disadvantages everyone who aims to write full-time but doesn’t have another income source (their own, or a parents’, or a spouse’s, or, or or). The result is that entire classes of people are edged out of publishing solely because the process, especially for writers early in their career, moves so glacially that people have to earn a living while they wait, and it’s so hard to, for example, work two jobs and raise a family and also somehow find the time to write. Especially considering that the standard advice for dealing with “no simultaneous submissions” is “just write something else while you wait!” ...the whole system screams privilege.
-
6. Genres are boxes that must be fit into and adhered to.
Your protagonist is 18? Then obviously your book is Young Adult. It doesn’t matter how smutty your book is, erotica books must have sex within the first three chapters, ideally in the first chapter. Sorry, we’re a fantasy publisher, if you have a technological element you don’t belong here…
While some genre boxes have been becoming more like mesh cages of late, with some flow of content allowed in and out, many remain stiff prisons that constrict the kinds of stories people can tell. Even basic cross-genre works often struggle to find a place, and there’s no reason for it beyond “if we can’t pigeon-hole a story, it’s harder to sell.” This edges out many innovative, creative works. It also disadvantages people who aren’t as familiar with genre rules. And don’t get me wrong - this isn’t an argument that, for example, the romance genre would be improved by opening up to stories that don’t have “happily ever afters.” Instead, it’s pointing out - there should also be a home for, say, a space opera with a side romance, an erotica scene, and a happily-for-now ending. Occasionally, works breakthrough, but for the most part stories that don’t conform never see the light of day (or, they do, but only after Point 2 - trad pub editors insist that the elements most “outside” the box be removed or revised).
-
7. The lines between romance and erotica are arbitrary, random, and hetero- and cis-normative.
This modern romance novel won’t sell if it doesn’t have an explicit sex scene, but God forbid you call a penis a penis. Oh, no, this is far too explicit, even though the book only has one mlm sex scene, this is erotica.
The difference between “romance” and “erotica” might not matter so much if not for the stigmas attached to erotica and the huge difference in marketability and audience. The difference between “romance” and “erotica” also might not matter so much if not for the fact that, so often, even incredibly raunchy stories that feature cis straight male/cis straight female sex scenes are shelved as romance, but the moment the sex is between people of the same gender, and/or a trans or genderqueer person is involved, and/or the relationship is polyamorous, and/or the characters involved are literally anything other than a cis straight male pleasuring a cis straight female in a “standard” way (cunnilingus welcome, pegging need not apply)...then the story is erotica. Two identical stories will get assigned different genres based on who the people having sex are, and also based on the “skill” of the author to use ludicrous euphemisms (instead of just...calling body parts what they’re called…), and it’s insane. Non-con can be a “romance” novel, even if it’s graphically described. “50 Shades of Gray” can sell millions of copies, even containing BDSM. But the word “vagina” gets used once...bam, erotica. (Seriously, the only standard that should matter is the Envelope Analogy).
-
8. Authors are expected to do a lot of their own legwork (eg advertising) but then don't reap the benefits.
Okay, so, you’re going to get an advance of $2,500 on this, your first novel, and a royalty rate of 5% if and only if your advance sells out...so you’d better get out there and market! Wait, what do you mean you don’t have a following? Guess you’re never selling out your advance…
Trad pub can generally be relied on to do some marketing - so this item is perhaps better seen as an indictment of more mid-sized Presses - but, basically, if an author has to do the majority of the work themselves, then why aren’t they getting paid more? What’s the actual benefit to going the large press/trad pub route if it’s not going to get the book into more hands? It’s especially strange that this continues to be a major issue when self-publishing (which also requires doing one’s own marketing) garners 60%+ royalty rates. Yes, the author doesn’t get an advance, and they don’t get the cache of ~well I was published by…~, but considering some Presses require parts of advances to get paid back if the initial run doesn’t sell out, and cache doesn’t put food on the table...pay models have really, really got to change.
-
9. Fanfiction writing doesn't count as writing experience
Hey there Basic White Dude, we see you’ve graduated summa cum laude from A Big Fancy Expensive School. Of course we’ll set you up to publish your first novel you haven’t actually quite finished writing yet. Oh, Fanperson, you’ve written 15 novels for your favorite fandom in the last 4 years? Get to the back of the line!
Do I really need to explain this? The only way to get better at writing is to write. Placing fanfiction on official trad pub “do not interact” lists is idiotic, especially considering many of the other items on this list. (They know how to engage readers! They have existing followings! They understand genre and tropes!) Being a fanfiction writer should absolutely be a marketable “I am a writer” skill. Nuff said. (To be clear, I’m not saying publishers should publish fanfiction, I’m saying that being a fanfiction writer is relevant and important experience that should be given weight when considering an author’s qualifications, similar to, say, publishing in a university’s quarterly.)
-
10. Tagging conventions (read: lack thereof).
Oh, did I trigger you? Hahahaha. Good luck with that.
We rate movies so that people can avoid content they don’t like. Same with TV shows and video games. Increasingly, those ratings aren’t just “R - adult audiences,” either; they contain information about the nature of the story elements that have led to the rating (“blood and gore,” “alcohol reference,” “cartoon violence,” “drug reference,” “sexual violence,” “use of tobacco,” and many, many more). So why is it that I can read a book and, without warning, be surprised by incest, rape, graphic violence, explicit language, glorification of drug and alcohol use, and so so much more? That it’s left to readers to look up spoilers to ensure that they’re not exposed to content that could be upsetting or inappropriate for their children or, or, or, is insane. So often, too, authors cling to “but we don’t want to give away our story,” as if video game makes and other media makers do want to give away their stories. This shouldn’t be about author egos or ~originality~ (as if that’s even a thing)...it should be about helping readers make informed purchasing decisions. It’s way, way past time that major market books include content warnings.
Thank you for joining us, this has been our extended rant about how frustrated we are with traditional publishing. Helpful? No. Cathartic? Most definitely yes. 🤣

———————————————————
The first is even worst than the second
Because the second has the gall to be cruel when venting
The first is idiotic at best and naive at worst-
At least with the second you know it's only a matter of time
Before they burst...
———————————————————
"Yeah Mom, I know...I won't-ok...l-love you too. B-." Dial tone followed the abrupt ending to a call that had barely begun. Sighing I glanced up at the neon clock that dimly illuminated my half of the dorm room that I shared with my roommate Kat.
3:49 A.M.
'Why do I want to be a veterinarian again?' Groaning I let my head flop against the clammy light oak wood desk that was provided by the college- and immediately regretted the decision to be so reckless with my body as the tender tissue of my forehead throbbed violently.
"Fucking midterms," I whimpered'"I should've planned better for this." It wasn't that I didn't know the material- I knew it very well- it was my fragile 3.65 GPA, that was hanging in the balance, along with all of my scholarships.
Now here I was at- I glanced back up at the clock-
3:56 A.M.
On a Sunday night.
Suddenly tears of frustration pricked at the corners of my eyes, and I quickly pressed the heels of palms against my lids, because if I started crying now- I wouldn't be able to stop.
I glared at three textbooks spread out on the desk, that were equally judging me in their own way.
"Fuck it."
Dejectedly I closed my books and put them away in my backpack and decided to get ready for bed.
Shuffling sleepily across the 625 sq foot room I trudged past the shared area in the room and noticed the tv was still on, and began rummaging around attempting to locate the remote to turn off the waste of electricity; when then news report for earlier that night began to replay:
"Tonight, the small town of Haddonfield holds vigil for Judith Myers birthday. Judith Myers was 17 years old when she was killed by her 10 year old brother Michael Myers. Some 15 years later the community is still on shock. Judy would've been 32 this year. Michael is now 25 years old and is being held at the Smith's Grove Sanitarium-where he will live out the rest of his lif-"
Losing interest I turned of the tv (I heard about Michael every damn day from my mother), I resumed my nightly ritual of showering- dealing with my hair and picking out my outfit for next the next morning. When I did finally make it to my bed- the fatigue I'd been so keenly keeping at bay, washed over me and gently suffocated be down into the world of sleep.
———————————————————
1 WEEK LATER
———————————————————
Midterms went by smoother than anticipated and I felt a weight lift of my chest, as I made my way around campus. My biology professor Mrs. Whelhers had asked to speak with me regarding a matter for my thesis. And lack of volunteer hours. I looked up at the cloudless sky and sun filled my already impaired vision as I sped walked to the labs, certain that someone was going to jump me for walking alone. My rather feverish anxiousness seemed to roll over me in waves and I clung tighter to my leather crossbody messenger bag that was already digging painfully into my shoulder- the strap taut with the weight of my textbooks.
Luckily I finished my journey completely unscathed- and made my way over to my professors office.
"Mrs.Whelers?" I quietly knocked on the door before calling out again. "It's (Y/N)! You said you needed to speak to me regarding my thesis! I can come back if n-"
Mid sentence the door swung open to reveal a very VERY hungover Mrs.Whelers. I simply stared at her, dumbfounded as I attempted to make sense of her disheveled appearance.
She had heavy purple bags under her eyes- which were rimmed a violent red around her amber irises. Her usually neat strawberry blonde hair looked it was attacked by birds on her way to work, and as for her clothes the were wrinkled. I'd spotted more than on fraying hem and food stain along her skirt and sleeves of her chiffon blouse.
"M-Mrs.Wheler? Are you all right?" I murmured then proceeded to reiterate
What I'd stupidly said a few moments before. "If now isn't a good time for you I would gladly come back another day."
But deep down I also knew that my thesis would be due within the next 5 months and therefore I really couldn't dodge around whatever necessary information she had for me. Especially if it had to do with my volunteering.
Instead the 60 year old woman shook her head and gestured for me to enter the office and waved with a shaky left hand- her wedding ring gleaming in the sunlight that lazily drifted through the tall windows in her office.
Mrs.Whelers began speaking as she sat down, but her words fell on distracted, deaf ears. I'd begun drinking the appearance of the office, all rich maple built in that showed hints of a reddish glow under their glossy finish.
My professor sighed heavily and immediately I was snapped out of my little trance. My eyes blurred, suddenly watery and after blinking hard to avoid a wave of exhaustion- they refocused with the  precision of a camera lens behind my harsh prescription glasses.
"I-I'm sorry, could you repeat that...I was a bit caught up in a thought." I mumbled embarrassed that I'd allowed myself to be distracted so easily. Mrs.Whelers looked me up and down cautiously, her eyes narrowing slightly as though she was trying to read the fine print on a document. I stared back at her sheepishly, eyes meeting hers then flitting away nervously.
I've always been this way when it came to eye contact- skittish and desperate to get away from it. If someone stares at me for too long- I begin to sweat profusely, nausea washing over me like a tsunami...then suddenly my skin feels like its on fire and I'll attempt to find anything on my body to pick at; my face, my arms, my nails, and by the end of it all I'm covered in nicks and scars from my own impulsiveness.
"I was saying Ms.(Y/L/N), that the volunteer hours needed along side your associates thesis are incomplete. Failure to complete said volunteer hours will result in the inability to graduate this upcoming June with the rest of class. More importantly- you will have to redo this past semester, out of your own pocket, your scholarship won't cover you."
"But that'a completely unfair!" I began to protest jumping up almost instantaneously. "I couldn't find the proper volunteer work, every clinic in a 50 mile radius was full for the next THREE MONTHS! I tried every which way possible to squeeze in somewhere; no exceptions could be made!"
"Unfortunately Ms.(Y/L/N) that isn't my problem- you either find a way to make up the time- in a way that would be approved by the school, or you don't graduate this June. That's final."
I felt tears swell in my eyes and rushed to grab my bag; I had every intention to run out the door before Mrs.Whelers put a hand on my shoulder to stop me.
"I didn't call you here to be the bearer of bad news, I wanted to talk about what options you may have; that have been pre-approved by the board..."
I sniffled sitting back down in the white leather arm chair that was seated in front of Mrs.Whelers’ desk. "You already spoke to the board?"
"Yes, they were quite curious as to why a student that has managed to be in the top of her class the past two years, hasn't completed something as simple as her volunteer hours. They realized rather quickly it must've had something to do with the availably of hours, and came up with another idea."
I glanced up at her curiously, "Which is?"
She began to pace around behind her desk as she spoke,"Well considering spring break begins at the end of this Friday- and you will be home for the next week-"
I opened my mouth to tell her there where no clinics back at home that did volunteer work for college students-but she waved a hand dismissively before I could.
"We at the board decided that we would like for you start a branch of animal therapy at Smith's Grove, we know your mother works- so she could be a guide to helping you with patients at first, but this could look really good for your transcripts. What do you think?"
I considered the offer momentarily- I knew getting Mother to agree wouldn't be an issue in the slightest- she’d been trying to get me to work with her at Smith’s for years...
“I could speak to her about it.” I said definitively then added “I’ll email you if she approves of the arrangement.” With a soft smile I moved once more to grab my messenger crossbody and sling it over my shoulder.
“Should your mother accept the boards offer for your volunteer hours I will message to board directly on your behalf, alright?” Mrs. Whelers said leading me to the door. As she opened it I nodded as I passed by- relieved that this problem would most likely have a solution and as long as I completed my 100 hours of volunteer work in the next week, my scholarship and graduation that lie a few months ahead will be safe...
“Have a good spring break (Y/N)!”
“You too Mrs.Whelers...”
Volunteer hours be damned...

Park Jinyoung - Beautiful stranger (part one)
Tumblr media
Title: Beautiful Stranger
Pairing: Jinyoung x Reader
Words: 1.6k
Summary: You work in a café and meet a beautiful stranger. Being quite insecure when it comes to feelings, and completely naïve when it comes to guys flirting with you, you don’t really see how much this stranger is into you... until your much too involved best friend convinces you otherwise.
I was cleaning the tables in the tiny café I have been working to for the past three years and a half. As much as I told myself I despised it, it had become a part of my routine and I had built my circle of friends around it. The customers were all usual, except for the few occasional tourists. Which meant I could tell you the names of almost every client who walked in the café, and my coworkers were like my family. My goal was to be a best-selling author, but as you probably know, it's easier said than done. I had been working on my book since I got this crappy job, and even though the novel itself was complete, my perfectionist self couldn't dare to send it to a publishing company.
"Y/N!!" My colleague and, most importantly best friend Kim called. "I know how much you hate tying up your hair, but I swear to God Josie will kill you if she sees you serving food with your hair down." I simply sighed, rolling my eyes. I knew Kim was just checking out on me, but I couldn't help to be a tiny bit annoyed by her attitude. I lazily grabbed an elastic in the front pocket of my dark apron and rapidly tied my long brown hair in a messy bun. "See." I pointed to the top of my head. "Happy, now?"
"Very." She simply stated, with a wide smile plastered on her face. Her title had just bumped from simple waitress to assistant manager and she took her role way too seriously, if you ask me.
Kim made her way from behind the counter to literally five inches away from me in the span of a few seconds. My reflexes made me take a huge step back, but my friend quickly closed the space between us and approached her mouth to my left ear, only to whisper: "By the way, you know, just like that... You've been cleaning this same table for the last thirty minutes." I let out a slight chuckle, covering my mouth with my right hand. "I don't know what you're talking about." "Sure..." She rolled her eyes. "I'm certain it has nothing to do with the handsome young man sitting right there, a couple of tables away." She wasn't subtle at all, since she almost yelled out the last sentence. I looked over at the table in question, and thanked the Lord that the "young man" was wearing a large pair of headphones on his head.
I caught myself staring at him again, noticing every little detail. From the way he was holding his phone with one hand, to the way he was using the other to occasionally sip on his latte. I felt my heart skip a beat, what the hell was happening? His hands were veiny, and his fingers were slightly crooked but had a perfect length. His dark brown hair was falling on his forehead adorably, and I enjoyed the way he would grin every so often while looking down at his phone with a smile so genuine, he almost resembled a small child receiving his first toy.
It was the first time I had seen him, you know, he was far from our typical 60 year old customer. When he had entered the place, he shyly asked for a table for one and I escorted him to my favorite spot; a small round table accompanied by two leather-covered lazy boy type chairs, by the window. The bistro was practically empty, so he was the only customer I could take care of, if you didn't count the two elders who would occasionally ask me to refill their coffees. "M-my name is Y/N and I'll be your waitress today." I stuttered. I handed him our menu, and he simply nodded with a smirk appearing on his lips as a form of "thank you". "I'll be back in a couple of minutes to see if you've made your choice." He looked up at me and that's when I realized he had the most gorgeous dark brown eyes. "Earth to Y/N!!!!" Kim exclaimed, bringing me back to my senses. "Go ask him for his number, for God's sake, or I'll do it for you." She ordered, half-serious. I bursted out laughing. "If you think one second that I've got the guts to even do that, you don't fucking know me, Kim!" She cackled. "Don't make me do it, Y/N." She threatened me jokingly, while making her way to the counter to start a new batch of coffee.
Kim had been working here for the past five years; she could pour a cup of coffee, answer the phone and print receipts all at the same time. It impressed me how determined she was, since she was still a student and didn't plan on working here forever.  I followed her steps, only to print the stranger's receipt, since he had been in here for the past hour and a half. I awkwardly strutted towards the customer, "Here's your receipt, don't hesitate to tell me if you need any-anything else." I placed the piece of paper on the table gently, and as he took it, his hand brushed the top of mine, so I removed it swiftly. My cheeks were burning and I could see that his were turning bright red. It was like we were having a staring contest, and I swore I could get lost in his eyes for hours without even realizing it. His gaze shifted from my eyes, down to my nose and lips and then to the receipt he was holding. "My name is Park Jinyoung, by the way..." He muttered. "Uhm... I don't know why I said that but, yeah..." He took his face between his hands, his elbows leaning on the small round table and looked down. I let out a small giggle, I was sort of relieved that he was nervous also, I mean, that was a good sign, right?
Even when he was completely mortified, Jinyoung was still the most handsome man I had ever laid eyes on.  "You can go to the register when you are ready to pay." I mumbled and left.
An excited Kim was waiting for me in the kitchen. She had witnessed this whole scene and was jumping around everywhere, I swore she was going to break something. She took my two hands in hers while she began dancing; I was just standing still, wondering what the hell was going on with this woman.
"He's soooooo into you!" She spoke melodically, almost like she was singing along to her favorite song. I sighed.
"Come on! You have to ask him on a date!" She was enjoying this too much, but that's what best friends are for, I guess. "Oh and I could tag along with Mark! It could be a double date!" She clapped her hands. Kim and Mark were the cutest couple I knew. They had just gotten engaged a few months ago and I always looked up to them as a model for what I want my future relationship to be like. I swore to myself that I would never waste my time with a guy if my eyes didn't sparkle like Kim and Mark's eyes do when they are around each other. That's what true love is, folks.
"Woah there!" I placed my hands on both her cheeks and gently pressed. "You need to calm down, he just told me his name. It's no big deal!"
"Whatever." Kim gave up and rolled her eyes, her sudden change of attitude caught me off-guard. "Just know you're your own cock-blocker." She pointed her index towards me and shrugged.
I was never the one to make the first move with guys. Even though I'm pretty confident most of the time, I always tend to chicken-out when feelings are involved. You could say self-sabotaging was my speciality.
I greeted new clients, placing them strategically all over the dining room. I was taking the order of a young couple while I noticed Jinyoung waiting at the register. My gaze scanned the place all over, Kim seemed nowhere to be seen so I tried my best to serve the couple as fast as I could in order to attempt to speak to Jinyoung for one last time.
Of course, the universe was totally against this plan. The guy, who was the male version of a Karen, wouldn't stop asking questions, and while I knew it was part of my job to answer him, I was completely annoyed. He kept on asking if the menu was vegan, and even though I told him it was not completely, but that we did in fact have some vegan options, he didn't want to cooperate at all. He only kept on yelling that we were all animal killers and left the restaurant, after insulting me.
I murmured a silent "go fuck yourself" to myself, before making my way to the register, noticing that Jinyoung had left the café already.
Just my fricken’ luck.
It was now the end of my shift, so I punched myself out and threw myself, completely exhausted, on one of the colorful bean bags in the break room. I had to wait for Kim, since she was my ride home. I scrolled on instagram for a couple of minutes when suddenly, a wild Kim appeared in the door frame, with the biggest grin on her face. I struggled to get up and out of the bean bag, my best friend laughing out loud at the view.
"I thought you'd want to have this." She handled me what I thought was a piece of paper.
I unfolded the wrinkly paper, soon realizing it was a receipt. Why exactly was she giving this to me?
"Flip it over and read." She ordered in a joyful manner.
It read:
To Y/N, Here's my number: 82-******* Please text me? I mean you don't have to... But I'd really like if you did? Jinyoung
My eyes grew three times their original size and I felt heat rise up my cheeks. So he was actually flirting with me?
******
Tell me if you guys are interested for part 2 and I will post it maybe in later this week!!! Thank you for reading :)

"i'm watching, i'm waiting, i'm aching, suffocating. i'm breathing, i'm speaking, can you hear me? i'm screaming for you."
Tumblr media
"Your phone has been going off, babe." yoongi mumbled while lightly shaking yn, as if his deep gravely voice wasn't enough to wake her. they'd decided to spend their saturday studying which had ended in them taking a three hour nap on his bed. yn rolled over, blindly reaching for her phone when it started ringing again. without checking it she answered the call ready to go off on whoever was blowing her phone up.
"Who the hell,"
"Yn, thank god. I need to see you. Can you meet me in the library?" jeongguk interrupted, ignoring her cursing. he knew her well enough to know he'd woken her up just by the sound of her voice but he couldn't really care less. his adrenaline was far too high to worry about her nap schedule.
"What? Why?" yn said rolling back over into yoongi who gladly welcomed her, wrapping his arms around her waist. the shock of hearing jeongguk’s voice not quite sinking in yet.
"It's kind of a long story, please just come, it's important." jeongguk pleaded, his voice full of desperation. yn's mind finally seemed to begin working properly, racing with the possibilities. had something happened with him and taehyung? the idea of jeongguk needing support had yn sitting up and gathering her things without a second thought.
"Okay, I'll be there soon." yn told her friend, worry clear in her voice. jeongguk could feel the guilt welling up in the pit of his stomach as they ended their call. yn was none the wiser, thinking something was seriously wrong when the real trouble had yet to begin. yn looked over at her boyfriend who was now sitting at the edge of his bed watching her with concern. "Oh shit, yoongi, I'm sorry I didn't even ask,"
"Don't even finish that sentence. You don't have to ask me to do shit." yoongi interrupted, almost offended the thought had even crossed her mind. in all honesty it made him happy to see her and jeongguk getting back on good terms, even if the younger boy clearly hated yoongi, that was yn's best friend. it was clear to him how much he meant to her, the only thing that mattered to yoongi was that yn was happy.
"You're the best, I don't know what's going on with Guk but maybe if it's not late when I get back to the dorm we could sneak up to the roof?" yn suggested, stepping in between yoongi's parted thighs, her hands wrapping around the back of his neck while a playful smile toyed at her lips. yoongi's let his hands rest on the backs of her thighs, squeezing lightly.
"I guess I could check my schedule." he teased making her swat at him lightly with a laugh. With one last peck yn left yoongi's room, heading straight for the library.
-
"Hey Guk, is everything okay? I'm sorry it took me so long I was, oh, hey Jin." the library was mostly empty since it was a saturday, the only person besides the three of them being the elderly librarian who was currently taking a nap at her desk. yn had spotted jeongguk at the back of the room quickly but she'd missed jin sitting at the other end of the table. quickly she realized something was up and it was most likely not relationship problems. "What's going on?"
"Um, well there's a lot we have to tell you, do you, you might want to sit down." jeongguk was nervous, something yn rarely saw but wasn't exactly a stranger to. normally he'd only get this way when his parents would catch them doing magic in the back yard, or that time he had a crush on kim mingyu who shamelessly flirted with jeongguk before he'd come out. if jeongguk was this nervous yn could only imagine what he had to say, so she took the seat across from him, glancing back and forth from him and their older friend while both seemed to avoid meeting her gaze.
"To start, I should tell you that everything we tell you right now, it has to be kept a secret. It's against the law to speak of it and if we get caught it'll be bad for all of us." jin said quietly, finally moving to the seat next to jeongguk. jin cast an invisibility spell over the three of them, making yn wonder what on earth she was here for. it was then yn noticed the folder and yearbook in his hand, she froze when she saw the familiar book jin held, it was the same one she’d looked at towards the beginning of the semester.
"Why do you have a yearbook from 1994?" yn asked her eyes not leaving the solid white book with the schools logo printed on the front.
"1994 was the year my parents graduated, same for jeongguk's dad. the next year jeongguk's mom, and your parents graduated. the six of them were all friends, kind of like you jeongguk, jimin and taehyung, they grew up together, came to this school and graduated as best friends." jin's confession took a moment to hit yn. the jeon's, who had been more like parents to her than her own aunts had known her real parents. if this was true why had neither of them had ever mentioned it before? they always acted like they hardly knew her aunts and had even listened to her when she’d talk about her parents like it was the first time they’d heard of them.
"The jeon’s, they knew? But they never,"
"They couldn't say anything. Your parents death was a tragedy and it effected everyone. When it happened there had been so many other things leading up to it. Witches were scared to leave the coven, they started keeping their children from training, many even 'going off the grid'. So in attempts to fix everything there were rules put in place. Most of them made sense, some didn't. One of them being that no one was ever allowed to speak of august the fifth, the day your parents were murdered." yn choked on her own breath, the bluntness of jin's words being nearly too much for her to handle. she'd never heard the story of her parents death, she'd always thought it was strange that no one seemed to know anything about it. everything jin said so far was adding up to the vague pieces of information she'd gathered so far.
"Who, who killed them? How do you know all of this?" yn managed to choke out.
"My parents told me when I was in high school. The woman that killed your parents was called Min Hayoon. She was Jaesun's mother." jin said slowly, in hopes of giving yn time to process the news. jeongguk on the other hand, he let his adrenaline get the best of him.
"Yoongi's aunt. His aunt killed your parents yn, and he didn't tell you." yn's mind was spinning from it all. there was no way it was true, yoongi wouldn't do that to her. he couldn't, could he? "It's the truth, look we even have proof."
the file was slapped open to show pages of information on min hayoon. yn's eyes scanned the page, praying this was some kind of sick joke. but there it was, laid out on old faded legal paper was the dreadful truth.
January 6th, 1997: Min was charged with first-degree murder, feeding on other witches, also accused of practicing dark magic
April 17th, 1997: Min was sentenced 60 years to life in the Maleficarum Carcerem(prison of witches)
July 4th, 1997: Min moved to isolation for behavioral issues
August 4th, 1997: Min escaped during transfer back to main facility
August 5th, 1997: Min executed by magic, unknown source. Min family chose not to investigate further
"There's a picture of Yoongi's aunt with your dad, they were obviously friends in school or maybe even something more." jeongguk added pushing the old yearbook in yn's face not even noticing the tears in her eyes. "Shit Yn, your aunts, they're not even human. They were born witches but they lost their powers that night. They worked together with your parents, my parents and Jin’s parents to protect you from her. They knew she was coming. Your mom and mine put a protection spell on you, connecting you to me, that way as long as I was kept safe you would be too, my mom was eight months pregnant with me at the time. Yn that's why I've always had that protective instinct over you."
"How long have you known?" yn asked, eyes snapping up to meet jeongguk's. he was talking like this wasn't new information to him. she hoped jin had only filled him in that day but the way his eyes filled with relief the more he spoke, like he’d been holding it in for a while made her skeptical.
"Um, well I, Jin hyung told me a while ago," it was as if the initial high from finally being able to spill everything had worn off and he'd just noticed yn's appearance. her eyes red from holding back tears, her mascara smudged slightly from the few that had managed to slip past. aside from the obvious signs jeongguk could see the pain in her eyes and it was then he realized how wrong he'd been in the way he went about all of this. "I just couldn't tell you before, I wanted to but I,"
"So why now?" yn questioned her anger building up. she felt betrayed. jeongguk was supposed to be her best friend, he knew her better than anyone. he'd held her many times in their years growing up while she cried over her parents. he knew how she longed to know them.
"Well because you, you were dating Yoongi and he's obviously not who he says he is." jeongguk stuttered only now realizing how stupid he sounded. he glanced over at jin who was visibly cringing, clearly sharing similar thoughts with his younger friend. "I just could sit by and watch him hurt you."
"What and you thought this wouldn't hurt me?" yn asked, her head falling to the side slightly. she felt so much pain in that moment for so many reasons. "How long?"
"Not that long, really,"
"How long, Jeongguk." yn demanded, her voice raising slightly. jin was watching everything unfold nervously, not sure where this was heading. he wanted to speak up but his mouth seemed to be glued shut.
"Since the first week of school." jeongguk said quietly, hanging his head, not able to meet yn's eyes.
"It's my fault, I wouldn't let him tell you yn, I made him promise." jin finally said in attempts to take some of the heat off the younger boy. the fire in yn's eyes when they met his told him that he'd probably done more damage than helped.
"Oh he promised? Well okay then. I guess I'll forgive the fact that my best friend of eight years found out how my parents died and didn't tell me. I'll just get over him knowing how hard it's been for me going on not knowing anything about them besides a handful of vague details, knowing how lost I've felt my whole life, and still choosing not to tell me because he made a promise to a guy he had just met."  yn's anger progressed with every second. she had never been so mad at jeongguk in her life, she'd never been so mad at anyone. how could he do this to her? how could he walk around knowing the one thing she longed to know and choose not to tell her? "God, I don't even know who you are anymore. You know I've been so upset because it's clear to me that we've been growing apart and I was so torn up thinking I was losing you, but now? I wouldn't bat an eye if I never saw you again."
"Yn, please don't say that, you don't, you don't mean that you're just mad." jeongguk pleaded, his voice cracking in fear. he hoped that he was right but somewhere not so deep down he knew he was probably wrong. jin felt his own heart break for his two friends, he couldn't help but blame himself in all of this. if he had just kept what he knew to himself jeongguk wouldn't have been betraying yn to begin with. or if he had just told her himself neither of them would be this hurt. he thought he was doing the right thing but seeing yn's cold eyes staring into jeongguk's pleading ones was proof that he'd completely fucked up.
"No Jeongguk I'm not 'just mad'. I'm hurt, I feel betrayed. Over the last eight years we've been in a handful of arguments, and each one I've forgiven you if you were the one in the wrong but this time, no. This is the last time you lie to me, and don't you dare say you didn't lie because I flat out asked you if you'd heard anything about my parents when I found out they were from different factions and you said no." by now the tears jeongguk had been keeping in had pushed their way past the dam he'd built up. yn was right, he'd betrayed her. he ruined their friendship and there was likely no going back. "You should go, I want you to go. Both of you."
yn could feel the rage coursing through her veins and the longer she looked at them the worse it got. jeongguk had seen this look before, once upon a time he was the sole person that could pull her back down from these fits, now he was the one causing it.
"Yn please I,"
"I said go!" yn snapped, her voice along with her hands slamming down on the table was comparable to a clap of thunder. unintentionally she sent every book in the library flying off the shelves. jin's feet were moving faster than his mind, his invisibility spell breaking as soon as he turned away. jeongguk was frozen in place, his heart breaking at the sight of his best friends pain. her eyes burned with anger and sadness as she continued to scream and tear the room apart. he knew this was his fault. he forced himself to watch the teacher detain her with a spell and carry her out of the room not even registering the second one coming in to drag him behind them, this was his fault.

Another ghost AU
Okay the premise for this one is sort of a what if they figured out Nina was the chosen one and performed the ritual, but its also an AU.
KT, Eddie and Willow move into a boarding house for the prestigious Ankh school. They notice there are a lot of awards and items in the school dedicated to a group of students.
It turns out that on the 7th of July, around 50 years ago, these 7 students were discovered dead. The cause was believed to be poisoning as the students were all from the same house and the two surviving students admitted to having skipped meals at the house that day. The house mother was arrested and sentenced for murder, despite rumours that she was innocent.
The truth of the tale is different:
An ancient Egyptian artefact was believed to have power beyond scientific knowledge, and, once assembled, was said to grant immortality. However, nature must maintain a balance, and for every life extended, another has to be cut short.
Despite all their research, the Secret Society were not aware of these consequences, or most likely were at some level but chose to ignore it. So, when the ritual took place and life was transferred, they had what they wanted, but at a cost.
The Immortals:
Victor Rodenmaar. Location unknown. Has been off the grid for 25 years after vanishing one night in the middle of the school year
Daphne Andrews. Still a teacher at Ankh. Taught many student's parents and has said she will retire next year for the past 20 years
Eric Sweet. Eddie's father, and a man he's always admired and looked up to. He's not what he seems, and is a lot older than Eddie believed.
Mercer, father to one of the lost students. Has realised immortality is not all it's cracked up to be. Having lost his wife 10 years ago, he lives a lonely life and regrets ever joining the society and offering up his daughter.
Jason Winkler. Joined due to degenerative illness, hoping this would be a cure. It was, and he lives a mostly happy life, when he can forget what part he played in the tragedy.
Doctor Delia. Now the CEO of the local hospital, she's experimented with her immortality, to see if there is a way to transfer part of her life to a patient. It took a lot of work, but 11 years ago, she finally had some success. 14 year old Sophia was fatally injured in a car crash, and Dr Delia used her blood in a transfusion, saving the girl.
Rufus Zeno is the final immortal. It was supposed to be Roebuck, but Rufus broke in and threatened the Chosen One, unless he got what he wanted. Wanting to save the girl, and being the only one who hadn't drunk from the cup, Roebuck sacrificed his chance.
(Had he known the girl would die anyway, it might have been different)
Rufus is out there, somewhere, and he's dangerous.
Back to the story:
(Idk what the plot really is but here goes)
The trio (Eddie, KT and Willow) discover the students used to live in Anubis House.
One night, they're playing truth or dare with their housemates: Stella, Marco, Anna, Raf and Peter. KT is dared to go down into the cellar, where she finds a secret panel. Behind it, she finds 7 balancing scales, an intricately decorated cup, and an empty bottle.
The scales have discs with names written on them. The names match those of the 7 students who died. However, the discs are only on one side of the scales, suggesting there were 7 more previously. KT takes the bottle to prove she went into the basement, and something compels her to take the discs as well, which she shows to Willow once they're back in their room.
They let Eddie know about it the next morning and the 3 begin to wonder if the students' deaths were really as they seemed.
Eddie is walking up the stairs when he trips on a loose floorboard. Annoyed, he goes to try and put it back into place when something catches his eye. It's a metal disc, tarnished with age. He cleans it up and sees the word Zeno printed on it.
He tells KT and Willow, and KT realises it must be from the scales she found. Something doesn't feel right, so they decide to investigate.
Eddie jokingly suggests they hold a seance, and despite Willows warnings, they do.
It doesn't seem to work.
The next day, Willow discovers an intruder in the house, someone who looks very similar to photos in the school...
Willow is unnerved but curious, so she says hey to them. They turn around, apparently spooked that someone can see them, and vanish.
Willow tells the others, who initially disbelieve her, but soon they come to meet the former residents of their boarding house.
The ghosts were obviously affected by their own deaths, and the fact that they're ghosts, but it's been 50 years now, so they're getting over it. They generally try to stay out of the students' ways, as they learnt that people generally freak out at the sight of ghosts.
They appeared as ghosts the same moment their lives transferred to the immortals, but were extremely weak and found it hard to keep themselves together. They were unable to dissipate completely though, something was keeping them there. They had to watch as Trudy was arrested; as their house was put out of action till an increase in students forced them to open it again 15 years later; as Victor still wandered the halls; as all the students came and grew and left while they were trapped in the house.
Unable to die, but unable to live.
Slowly, they began to gain more power, and for the past 10 years they've been able to hold a corporeal form for lengthening times, meaning they can actually do things and go places. They're capable of leaving the house for short distances and periods of time, though if they're out for too long they fade away and reappear back in the house with a killer headache.
They think (hope) this means the immortals are weakening, but it could just be they're getting used to the whole being dead thing.
Their lives were tied to the balancing scales and the person on the opposite side, so they each have some connection to an immortal
This means they get fleeting impressions/feelings from their immortal, which strengthens with their proximity.
Connected Immortal and Ghost:
Rodenmaar - Nina
Sweet - Fabian
Andrews - Amber
Delia - Alfie
Roebuck/Zeno - Jerome
Mercer - Joy
Winkler - Patricia
Amber gets the most impressions because Ms Andrews still teaches at the school
Nina and Jerome receive hardly any because both Zeno and Rodenmaar are unknowns
However, recently they've started getting fleeting emotions and visuals that aren't their own. The two missing immortals are becoming active and they're heading for the house.
The ghosts can't do much on their own so Eddie, KT and Willow have to be prepared to discover what these two immortals want and put a stop to it.
Eddie finds out that his dad was once Eric Sweet (he chose a different name after leaving the school, to distance himself), the former headmaster of the school and is horrified by the part he played in all this. A confrontation goes down.
There's a bit where they track down Mick and Mara, now in their 60s, and bring them back to Anubis House to reunite with their former housemates. It would be a really emotional scene because while most of them weren't close, you can't live in close quarters with people for a long time, without forming a bond. And when it ended so abruptly with no goodbyes...well.
They also track down the other immortals and bring them to the house to face their ghosts (literally). Ms Andrews regrets it immensely; Delia has no (some) regrets, but argues she's able to save many more lives this way, Jason is in denial.
Don't imagine immortal!Mercer finally seeing his daughter again, only she's a ghost and he caused her death. He's full of apologies, but they're all based around how he missed her, not how he cut her life short.
There would be a lot of regret and grief all round, and anger on the ghosts' part.
While Trudy probably wouldn't be alive after all this time, the trio and the ghosts want the immortals to clear her name.
Zeno and Rodenmaar arrive at the house. They're both searching for an ancient artefact hidden in the house.
(Is it the mask? Is it the Book of Isis? Robert Frobisher Smythe? Who knows? Not me.)
They also want to try and end the other because, why not. Grudges can last forever.
The trio also meet Sophia at some point, who is undergoing weird transitions as a result of the blood transfusion. Her body is fighting it while also trying to embrace it, and it causes her to randomly absorb life/energy from plants or other people. She can also transfer energy to other beings, but this causes her to collapse. She also still looks 14 when she should be in her 20s by now. The trio befriend her and try to figure out a cure.
While their existences are tainted with regret and bitterness, the ghosts still make their own fun. Sometimes they'll pull pranks on unsuspecting students, or just sit in the back of the class room to listen to the lessons like they're students again. They know for a fact Ms Andrews hasn't changed her curriculum in 50 years and can now recite her lessons by heart. They also like to play games in the house like tag or hide and seek, and they will admit its more fun when you can phase through walls.
When they reveal themselves to the trio, they enjoy tormenting them, but also help them with their games nights, charading the answers behind the other 5s backs. Everyone's had near misses with the 5, but somehow they remain oblivious to the SEVEN GHOSTS living in their house. But then again everyone else is oblivous to the fact the 5 are on some Arthurian quest.
I don't know how this story would end, but the best outcome is that they fight Zeno and Rodenmaar, and some truth comes out that Rodenmaar has discovered a way to reverse what was done and needs an artefact from the tunnels to conduct the ritual. Zeno, meanwhile has discovered another ritual that would give him the power from the other immortals to essentially make himself a god.
Naturally, both are trying to stop the other from achieving their goals.
Initially, KT, Eddie, Willow and the ghosts (and Sophia) attempt to stop both parties, but when they discover Victor's plan they work to take down Zeno. Once he's subdued (taken down by Sophia draining his energy), they summon the other 5 immortals.
Some of them take some convincing, but others are all too ready to give up this immortal life. They get time to tie off loose ends. Ms. Andrews hands in her resignation, Delia entrusts someone (Sophia?) with her work, Mercer has a long talk with his daughter, Eric has an even longer talk with his son. Victor spends his time in Anubis House, telling the kids his story and apologising for taking so long to fix his mistake.
Eventually, the ritual takes place, and the next day sees 7 new students enrolled who look uncannily like the students in the pictures.
(It takes them a while to adjust to the fact they can't walk through walls anymore)

TEACHING TOURISTS THE REAL HAWAI`I
New York Times - February 4, 2020

Locals in O`ahu know that the best way to get from Waikiki’s crowded beaches to the cool North Shore is to drive along the island’s eastern coast. The road is framed by mountains, ocean and greenery so lush and beautiful, it’s hard to focus the eye on one place for too long, for fear of missing the next scenic attraction.
On a recent trip along the route, something else stood out: the upside down Hawaiian flags flying at almost every stop.
The flag, which has the union jack in the bottom left corner, instead of the usual top left, hung in storefronts in Waikiki and was printed on T-shirts in Waimanalo, it was stuck on the bumpers of passing cars in Kailua and flying from the backs of trucks in Kahuku and other towns on the North Shore.
The flag has become a symbol of solidarity among Hawaiians who oppose the construction of a large new telescope on Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawai`i. Mauna Kea, at 32,000 feet from seafloor to summit, and with 13,796 feet above sea level, is one of the best places in the northern hemisphere, if not the world, to observe the cosmos, experts say. The telescope’s proponents say that it will bring hundreds of jobs to the island and advance humanity’s study of space.
But it has faced fierce resistance from some native Hawaiians for whom Mauna Kea is sacred ground and a place of roots, and their allies. Opponents of the telescope say they are tired of having their land taken for purposes that benefit others and for the often elusive promise of jobs that fail to deliver in terms of numbers or a living wage.

“The struggle at Mauna Kea right now is one of the biggest issues that has realigned many cultural political relationships in Hawai`i,” said Kyle Kajihiro, an activist and lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. “It’s really quite an amazing emergence of Hawaiian activism of cultural awareness.”
The battle over the telescope has revealed fissures that have long existed in Hawai`i, a place that is all but synonymous with tourism — the most-popular destination for honeymoons in the United States and a bucket-list perennial. The fight has inspired actions around the islands, all relating to how land is used and who benefits from it.
The spirit of protest is most visible in O`ahu, where in Kahuku demonstrators have spent the last several months fighting the construction of eight wind turbines, each standing at 568 feet — taller than the tallest skyscraper in Honolulu. Protesters say the turbines will have adverse long term health effects on the population. The company building them says there is no evidence to support those claims and promises to bring jobs to the area. More than 160 people have been arrested there.
In southeast O`ahu, in September, 28 people were arrested trying to block the building of a park and recreation center in Waimanalo, a largely agricultural town. The developers behind the center say it will bring jobs and create a new community space, but opponents fear it will be a magnet for tourists and will destroy the forest and beach used by locals.
In Honolulu, in May, Hilton employees protested, demanding a better contract and job protections. In July, hotel employees went on strike to protest what they said were low wages and the firing of 45 workers by Diamond Resorts, an operator of multiple properties in the United States and Europe. The company said it would turn one of its hotels into a timeshare resort, which requires fewer workers than a traditional hotel.
“We value our dedicated team members at The Modern Honolulu and we were pleased to reach a contract agreement that includes a significant pay increase,” a spokesman for Diamond said. “We are continuing our planned efforts to convert the property into a world-class vacation ownership resort.”
Most people in Hawai`i, especially in the tourism industry work more than one job to barely get by, said Bryant de Venecia, communications organizer for the workers’ union, Unite Here Local 5, which represents resort workers.
“Mauna Kea has lit a fire for Hawaiians who are tired of watching their land, resources and work be used at the expense of their well-being,” he said.
Hawai`i is the most expensive state to live in, according to the 2018 Annual Average Cost of Living Index by the Council for Community and Economic Research. Groceries, for example, cost more than 60 percent the national average.
“People are tired of being decorative — Hawaiians as well as people who live in Hawai`i,” said Maile Meyer, who owns Nā Mea Hawai’i, a bookstore in Honolulu that sells products from smaller local makers. “You’re seeing a phenomenon of natives gathering again and completely finding our way back to each other as part of the solution.

Jobs Aren’t Enough
A common thread between these protests is that they are being led by locals. They say that since Europeans first arrived in the 18th century, Hawaiian land has been taken and misused by non-Hawaiians, and often to the detriment of Hawaiians and their traditions. The endeavors that have sparked these recent protests all promise jobs, just as tourism and defense have in the past.
But perhaps for the first time in recent Hawaiian history, natives and locals are saying the quality of these jobs is not good enough.
“We’re having to move away from quantity to quality,” said Laurien Baird Hokuli`i Helfrich-Nuss, the founder of Conscious Concepts, a company that works with local organizations on sustainable tourism initiatives. “Now that local people are getting more agency, they are learning more, going into a more curious space of saying ‘It’s great that this company is providing jobs, but what kind of jobs are they? Are they good jobs? Are they paying a livable wage?”
Tourism is the biggest driver of Hawai`i’s economy, accounting for 21 percent of jobs. Nearly 10 million people visited the state in 2018 and in 2019, guest arrivals were expected to surpass that number, hitting a record high. And although more people are visiting Hawai`i, they are spending less there.
Locals say that resorts are often owned and run by non-Hawaiians, with Hawaiian people employed in the lower-paying service jobs, and that development often benefits outsiders at the expense of native and local well-being.
“There historically hasn’t been enough consideration for how tourism and tourists can contribute to making life sustainable and really livable for the locals who serve them here,” Mr. de Venecia said.
More Than A “Play Land”
The feeling of escape — of fleeing to a nearby paradise with stunning beaches and luxurious resorts — has long been Hawai`i’s appeal to the traveling public. While the hottest trends in travel now are the search for authenticity and ways to experience local life, many people who visit Hawaii are looking to get away from daily life. They come to sit on the beach and drink a matai without thinking about much else. Their interaction with local culture is often limited to watching a hula show at the hotel luau.
“We realized a lot of folks who would visit us who would normally have more consciousness about history and social justice concerns seem to turn off that part of their brain when they think about Hawai`i,” Mr. Kajihiro, the activist and lecturer, said, adding that people treat the islands as a “play land.”
But this decision to turn off their brains is hurting Hawai`i and Hawaiians, he said. While working for the American Friends Service Committee, the Quaker peace and justice organization, Mr. Kajihiro and his colleague Terrilee Keko`olani studied the environmental and social effects of colonization, militarization and overdevelopment of Hawai`i. They learned that tourism was one of the industries with some of the most damaging effects on O`ahu, he said, citing overcrowding, a higher cost of living and higher prices for goods.
The pair began offering alternative tours of the island, which they call DeTours, in 2004 and have seen increased interest in recent years. Their work was included in the recently published Duke University Press book “DeTours: A Decolonial Guide to Hawai`i,” a collection of essays, interviews and family histories about ethical and contextualized tourism in the islands.
The tours are given to groups of people who want to learn about Hawai`i from the perspective of local Hawaiians. They include a deep history on the ways military life is hidden across the island. During a typical tour, guests go to `Iolani Palace, the Hawaiian royal residence, then to Chinatown and some of the old neighborhoods where new immigrants to Hawai`i traditionally settled. The next stop is usually Fort Shafter, the headquarters of the United States Army Pacific; then Camp Smith, but the main part of the tour is Ke Awalau o Pu`uloa — Pearl Harbor.Continue reading the main sto
During a DeTours of Pearl Harbor, Mr. Kajihiro pauses in the “Oa`hu court” between the Pearl Harbor galleries and the museum and asks guests to look at the placards in the hallway. At the placard that says, “The Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown in 1893,” he explains that this one sentence has been controversial with the United States government because it acknowledges the government-backed overthrow of Queen Lili`uokolani, which unsettles American claims to Hawai`i. In the museum’s Attack Gallery, Mr. Kajihiro points to a small image of the Hono`uli`uli internment camp where Japanese people were held during World War II and uses it as a jumping-off point for a conversation about immigration and civil rights.
“People already come here with so many images and ideas about what Hawai`i is that it’s really hard for them to see something different, so that’s why we started calling our work ‘DeTours,” Mr. Kajihiro said. “To swerve off the path that most people are going to see or understand and consume and shake it up by raising some more critical perspectives and introducing a lot of historical facts that are not so pleasant.”
  New Type Of Tourism
The DeTours team is part of a movement looking to change what tourism means in Hawai`i. Ms. Nuss, of Conscious Concepts, is originally from O`ahu and returned in 2009 after working in hospitality in the Caribbean, New York, Miami and other places on the United States mainland.
“I came home seeing something happening in Hawai`i that I didn’t see when I left,” she said. “My generation was stepping into their leadership roles and doing it differently, reconnecting for a movement back to the land.”
But she quickly realized that what many companies were doing didn’t align with her vision for supporting tourism while ensuring the well-being of overworked Hawaiians.
In 2015, Ms. Nuss created her company to find ways to support Hawaiian businesses function sustainably while also remaining a key part of the most important sector in O`ahu — tourism. Ms. Nuss has worked with farms, artists and nonprofit organizations to change their offerings so they can appeal to tourists, while still benefiting Hawaiians. A farm hoping to attract tourists to volunteer might turn to her to figure out the best ways to reach them. She described her work with as “consciously creating experiences for travelers and opportunities for locals.”
“I had a realization about how our tourism industry is presently run, which is coming from the commodification of culture,” she said. “I realized what was happening in my communities and the value systems that were driving it were contradictory to the form of tourism that I was being a part of.
”Continue reading the main stTo give tourists a more authentic experience of “the real Hawai`i,” the artists Roxy and Matt Ortiz, invite them into their studio in the Kaka`ako district of Honolulu. The couple is known for their elaborate murals of fanciful tree houses, which they create under the name Wooden Wave.
“When people come see us work, it gives them a totally different way to experience Hawai`i,” Ms. Ortiz said. “And it’s a fun way for us to give tourists a different experience than they usually see in those brochures.”
In these studio visits, guests can see the couple’s work in progress, but also learn about ahupua`a, the ancient system of land division, in which the island was separated into slices, each slice running from the top of the local mountain to the shore. During the visit, Mr. Ortiz explains that each ahupua’a included forest area up high and a cultivated area below, and depending on the politics and economy of each ahupua`a, its size was different from another.
Mr. Ortiz said that even the slightest opportunity for tourists to think about how water and land have always worked together and why they hold importance to Hawaiians can encourage them to be more thoughtful when interacting with locals and the land and sea while visiting.
“When people have some of the history and context they can appreciate the art more and they can experience the island in a more meaningful way,” he said.

Another way tourists can learn about the land and engage with locals is by visiting a local farm like Kahumana Farm in Waianae on the west side of O`ahu.Continue reading the main stor
In November, Chloe Anderson, a therapist and teacher in California, visited the farm and stayed for four of her six days on O`ahu. There she shared a room with others, did yoga, learned about the produce grown and cooked on the farm and generally felt like she got a more meaningful experience than she would have at a luxury resort, removed from daily Hawaiian life.
“We had like three or four different activities we would do every day,” she said. “But so many things were based off the farm and at the farm. We still had the experience of being a tourist in Hawai`i and going on hikes and beach excursions, but also of experiencing something more.”
Some business owners are committed to staying in the tourism sector, and are trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

“I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect that people just won’t work in the main industry there is and I don’t think Hawaiians want to stop tourism altogether, but we are all working to find ways of doing it responsibly and thoughtfully,” said Shane Hiroshi Gibler, who co-owns Royal Hawaiian Catamaran, which is based in Honolulu and offers snorkel tours, sunset cruises and private charters.
On Mr. Gibler’s boat, guests are asked not to bring any plastic and recycling is available aboard. Mr. Gibler educates guests an education about fishing, food and the importance of the ocean and the land to Hawaiians. The Royal Catamaran team regularly gathers people to clean up the shoreline and has been working with the Surfrider Foundation to remove ghost nets — fishing nets that have been lost or left behind by fishing boats — from reefs or the ocean.
The idea, one echoed by Mr. Kajihiro, is to encourage tourists to think about how they can leave their resort, even for one day of their trip, and contribute to the place they are visiting.ontinue reading the main stor
“The point is to make folks more responsible when they come here and to interrogate this notion that Hawai`i is somehow a place for them,” Mr. Kajihiro said. “If you are thinking about coming here, ask yourself: Who are you in relation to this place? Are you bringing something that will be of value to the host, the people who live here? What will be your impact and your legacy be?”

Director stealing credit for intern's work? Enjoy unemployment and €250,000 personal debt.
Brace yourselves, it's a bit of a long one, but it's a prime example of a single sentence can go a long way. (tl:dr at the end)
So one summer at university I took a job in the marketing department of a small manufacturing company, ostensibly creating foreign language advertising material and safety texts, as well as all the social media stuff for their upcoming move into Europe.
It quickly became clear a large element of sales was involved but I didn't mind - I was young and wanted lots of big wins for my résumé. The department consisted of myself, another guy for another European language, and one hugely underpaid 16-year-old 'junior' intern. We all worked for an absolute bandit (hereafter 'the boss') who basically had no relevant experience or competencies but was a smooth talker and had ensnared the company owner with some kind of evil wizardry. This boss spent most of his time running a side business off his iPhone, only stopping to literally throw things at us whilst we were on the phone (banter), to randomly paint the inside of our office jet black (ceiling included) or make inane demands like trying to force a supplier to give us a 40% discount based on our tiny firms 'potential'.
This was all fine and kind of funny, and gave us something to laugh about at KFC during lunch, but the real pain in the arse was that whenever anyone made any real headway (sealed a deal with a supplier or vendor, completed negotiations with government agencies, secured a good rate for marketing, found a new opportunity etc.) he would steal the credit. The owner never caught on and genuinely thought the guy was a one-man powerhouse, despite us occasionally leaving evidence or outright telling the owner when we'd done the work, catching the boss out in some blatant lies. It was all just 'miscommunication' in the owner's eyes.
This went on for months. We were all on minimum wage or lower as "interns" whilst basically doing the boss' job for him as he repeatedly told us how great he was and how little we understood. We spent the summer confusing the hell out of European CEOs and Purchasing Directors who wondered why this mad little English company was using interns for all its international business.
The other marketing guy got tired and quit, leaving just me and the junior intern, at which point I was told I had been 'promoted' to lead the project for both countries. At this point I was now, on part-time minimum wage, entrusted with planning and executing a foreign market invasion for two different countries solo, whilst the boss sold dildos on his iPhone (oh btw his side business was a sex shop).
Even that would have been alright by me if the boss hadn't kept trying to steal credit. At one point he jumped in in a foreign language phone call I was making to a well-circulated magazine and, in English, said "I'll take over, Anpassungburo isn't really that important" before promptly realising the other party was about 60 years old, partially deaf, and spoke about 4 words of English. He handed the phone back to me then went off to tell the owner he'd just landed a great rate on some ad space.
Public episodes like this meant our potential vendors scented weakness and ultimately proposed a lopsided contract which basically stated that if our products didn't sell a certain volume, we would be liable to pay the vendor pure cash for the remainder. The 'certain volume' was €250000 (net profit, not even gross sales) in the first twelve months. I'd never heard of such a proposal before, and even at 19 I knew it was all kinds of shady. This was the first thing I was perfectly happy to let the boss take credit for. There was no way we'd make that quota, but the clueless boss was so thrilled to have a 'big' number to throw around he printed the contract there and then. It had been mailed to me but he instantly claimed HE had brokered it, the absolute turnip. Now for the Pro Revenge; he asked what I thought of the contract and whether we could achieve it. What I did not say was that only a world champion village idiot would sign this contract. I did not say that only an absolute dildo vendor would go ahead with this blatantly disastrous contract without consulting the owner. As the boss had made very clear, he was the marketing god and I was a lowly intern whose opinion was no more use than a chocolate teapot, so rather than warning him that this contract was so horrible we should burn the paper it was printed on and have the office exorcised to be safe, I instead said simply;
"you're the boss - the numbers are all in the project book if you want to read it over but if it looks good to you the post office closes in 15."
I knew without a shadow of a doubt he wouldn't bother with my boring paperwork, not when I had dangled the chance for him to get his big win dispatched by the end of business, and sure enough he said there was no need to see my figures as he had 'done the sums himself' and was certain it was solid gold. Funnily enough, the project book quite clearly showed that I had estimated (as best I could with no analytical experience) that our gross first year sales might top 20k if we were lucky, but anything written by me wasn't worth reading, not with the post office closing in 15, so he signed the contract and sent me running off to post it. I made copies and mailed it off to our lucky new vendors. I then took a copy straight to the owner, told the owner the project book was in the boss' office if he wanted to check he numbers, and then went to HR next door to regretfully hand in my notice before shifting it out of there before the fireworks started.
Bang on opening the next day, the boss was called to a meeting with the owner. Yelling was heard. About an hour later the boss is walked off the property and a hastily typed email is sent out reminding people that only the owner and HR are Signing Authorized on behalf of the firm. Unfortunately the contract was still apparently valid as the boss' title (marketing director) gave him implied authority or something.
I'm not a lawyer and all I did during my final week (with no boss and our project in tatters) was to hang out at KFC with the other surviving intern. I wasn't at any board meetings, shockingly, but the company lawyer was there every day that week and last I heard the ex-boss was being sued by the company for the damages they had to fork out to the European vendor, which were potentially over €250k. I doubt that his dildo dealership made enough to cover his legal fees.
TL;DR - lazy boss/shady sex toy salesman steals credit for year's worth of work, has no idea what is going on and signs nonsense contract he has no authority to sign. Company fires him and takes him to court for damages. I eat KFC throughout

Up in the air
Another of my fluff attempts i just wrote even if it’s 4 a.m. I didn’t have the patience to read it so brace yourself there are many mistakes probably.
Hope you enjoy.
The Hyuuga girl couldn’t help but sigh in frustration. She was currently on a plane, on her way home, usually that would have out her in a good mood, but this trip was a last minute one, literally, it had been only about 30 minutes since she hung up after talking to her father. Hiashi had seemed a bit hesitant to inform her that due to over-working he had collapsed. The Hyuuga man was a little too proud to ever ask for help, but the hospital you not release him unless a family member was there to pick him up. Unfortunately, Neji was on business trip from which he could not return sooner, while Hanabi was somewhere around the edge of the Earth. The youngest member of their family had just graduated high school and for that summer she had planned to travel everywhere. So naturally, the only choice was Hinata, who had moved from her hometown a couple years ago because of her job as a best-selling writer.
The young woman packed whatever was at hand and got on the first plane home, not even caring that she’d have to wait about 30 minutes in another city, since the plane stopped twice. She barely had time to change her business shirt to one of her grey sweaters with tiny alien faces all over.
She could say she rather liked her ‘look’ the twin loose buns with the curly front hair shafts and her professionally done make-up she had had done from the conference worked rather well with the coziness of her sweater, jean shorts and green sneakers. To put everything together she had her peach round sun glasses on top of her head. She didn’t actually mean for everything to work so well together but it turned out so well she made a mental note to try this look again.
The seat next to her was empty, probably the person wo purchased the said ticket was going to board from the first stop, that was fine by her, it meant she had about an hour alone, so she used that time to try to sleep. Hinata never liked complaining, especially about her work, since she felt so blessed to be able to do what she loved, but the conferences always left her feeling exhausted, like her life source was drained. The blue-haired woman fell into a profound sleep that she didn’t feel the first landing, nor when someone sat next to her, neither did she feel the second take off.
Sasuke was always in a foul mood when he had to fly, today was no exception, and you could easily see it in the way the usually clean-cut Uchiha carried himself at those times. He had on his old black hoodie, dark blue jeans and his black sneakers, he didn’t even bother to comb or run his fingers through his hair, allowing the messiness of his ‘bed-hair’ to run free through his spikes and somewhat curls.
He was flying to his best friend’s house because believe it or not, the blonde had knocked-up another loud blonde, Naruto was a honorable man so there was no question in mind when Ino told him about the baby, they were getting married that spring. And the wedding was only a week away, Sasuke was in charge of being best man, which meant the bachelor party and all the support, bot mentally and physically, fell onto his shoulders. Which to him meant one thing only, he had to be there days early to make sure that things would go smoothly.
As the black-haired male was making his way down the seat rows to his own his eyes fell to all the people in the plane, he had a tendency to over analyze everyone nearby to where he would spend a longer period of time. Reason why he hated any sort of public transport or social events which involved strangers (basically any type of gathering). Finally, reaching his seat he took a deep breath before letting his eyes fall on his partner in suffer, he was always anxious about the person that he would inevitably be sat next to him. To his pleasant surprise it was a sleeping girl wearing what seemed to be an alien-print sweater. He couldn’t be more grateful that she was asleep.
He sat himself comfortably in his seat, well as comfortable as you can get on a plane, and started reading from where he left off in his book. The flight to Konoha would be a bit over 4 hours long. He was 15-16 pages in, in the middle of the sentence when his whole body went stiff because on his shoulder was rested the head of the sleeping girl.
The Uchiha wasn’t really sure what to do, he didn’t want to wake her up, because the flight was long and he’d rather she sleep, but he wasn’t very comfortable with the position he was in. He tried to ignore it for as long as he could, but before he could muster up the courage to wake her up, she stirred awake and her eyes looked at him in confusion before her face turned every possible shade of red.
She looked rather funny, with her mouth opening and closing like a fish, her face redder than a tomato and her lavender eyes open wider than he thought anybody could.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry…I didn’t mean to, oh God, this is so awkward…”
She kept mumbling and waving her hands in front of her chest, she was looking at the floor than, her bangs covering most of her face. Seeing her look so fanatical about the situation put him in an oddly good mood, so he only shook his head and slightly chuckled after telling her it was no problem and that she shouldn’t worry.
After a few more awkward minutes in silence Sasuke turned to his book and Hinata understood that the commotion was over with. Still she could not believe she had slept on his shoulder for God knows how long. Trying to forget the incident she got her laptop and headphones out and decided to watch one of the movies she downloaded over the years saying that she’ll watch them when she had the time.
It was rather hard to pick one from the 50-60 she had because most didn’t ring a bell anymore, so she was clueless to what kind of movie it was or what the story was. So, she preferred to go with a safe bet and chose the one she downloaded last, because she could still vaguely remember the trailer.
His ‘seatmate’ had put her headphones in when he realized that she was watching a movie on her laptop, the movements of the image were distracting him from reading so he closed his book, deciding to sleep, but despite the bags under his eyes he wasn’t that tired. He didn’t realize he was staring at the screen until the blue-haired...girl(?) turned to him with one eyebrow rose. She paused the movie and put it from the beginning, despite it having started just 2-3 minutes before. She took her left headphone off and offered it to him with a kind smile.
Under normal circumstances he would have refused anything offered to him by a stranger, especially by a woman, but she seemed to be harmless and he was getting bored, so he took it and so they started watching the movie together. Turned out that Sasuke really enjoyed the movie but halfway thought the girl had fallen asleep once more on his shoulder, this time it didn’t bother him half as much. It probably would have been a good idea to take off headphone from the girl because towards the end of the movie there was a loud noise and she jumped awake again.
The incident made Sasuke laugh but also feel a little bad, so despite his shoulders shaking with laughter he pulled the girl in a half hug and guided her head back on his shoulder right before leaning his own head on hers.
It should have freaked her out that this stranger was touching her, but it was true that she started, also she decided she liked the sound of his muffled laughter. Without much intention she kind of leaned in more into him. Something about him made her feel at ease and his arm still lazily around her made her feel oddly safe.
“I doubt I saw half the movie” she decided to be the one breaking the silence.
“True, and it’s a shame, the movie was rather good.” His voice was really deep and velvety.
“Then I’ll make sure to watch it front start to finish, another time” He muttered a short ‘ok’ and the silence fell once more, but it wasn’t awkward, it was comforting and luring her to sleep again.
“I’m Hinata” she kind of rushed the words out before dozing off once more. She heard him say ‘Sasuke’ but it was quite far away, yet she was sure she’ll remember him name for a really long time.
When the flight attendant announced that they will be landing in a few minutes they both opened their eyes. Hinata felt rested after sleeping so much on the plane, an unlike other times her neck didn’t hurt as much. Sasuke didn’t even realize he had fallen asleep and he kind of regretted and was grateful for the fact that he put his arm around her. He regretted because it fell asleep and he couldn’t really feel the limb, but he enjoyed her closeness, which was odd.
The last few minutes they talked a little, both told the other the reason why they flew to Konoha, it turned out that they both lived in the same city, just different neighborhoods, Sasuke had been in another city for a work related issue. Also Hinata surprised both of them by being forward and asking Sasuke for his number, which he gladly gave her.
He had held her hand while getting off the plane under the context that she had just woke up and was a little dizzy. Hinata wanted to point out that he had slept as well, but decided against it when the feeling of their fingers intertwining hit her.
Naruto was standing waiting for his best friend to get off the plane when he spotted the bitter-looking man with a smile on and holding a girl’s hand. The blonde’s eyes were wide and his jaw dropped. He couldn’t help but analyze the girl his friend was smiling at. She was quite beautiful rom she he could see, her skin was pale, she was quite short, and most important she was smiling at him too, her cheeks dusted with a bit of pink.
Sasuke saw his best friend and rose his hand in a somewhat wave which Naruto returned with a huge grin, he couldn’t wait to tease the Uchiha. It was about time he found himself a girlfriend, he was 26 years old and hadn’t had a girlfriend that lasted over 3 dates.
“Hey idiot” Sasuke said, he let of her hand and hugged the blonde, who Hinata assumed was ‘Naruto’ the one getting married. She smiled at him when the blonde gave her a wink.
“We’ll drop Hinata off at the hospital, she has to pick up her dad, it’s on the way. That cool with you?”
“Sure…” The Uzumaki answered while narrowing his eyes. Two things bothered him, first Sasuke did not introduce them, and second he said ‘drop off’ not take to the hospital, wait for her and continue.
“I’m Naruto. This ass can’t be bothered to actually introduce us apparently” He decided to clear the issues as soon as possible.
“Hello, I’m Hinata. Thank you so much for taking me, Naruto. That is very kind of you”
The blonde decided he liked her, she smiled nice and talked very soft, her eyes were kind and she and Sasuke looked adorable together, not that he would tell the Uchiha that.
After they dropped Hinata off at the hospital, he thought it was the perfect time to both ask about her and tease his friend.
“You didn’t tell me you’re bringing a date to the wedding” Naruto winked at his friend, Sasuke only rolled his eyes at the statement.
“I’m not. We met on the plane”
Naruto’s face fell. She was a stranger. And his best friend smiled and touched her, like…voluntarily. That was beyond creepy, but he could see why even the ice-cold Sasuke took a liking to Hinata. After spending 10 minutes with her in the car on the way to the hospital, Naruto could genuinely say she was one of his favorite persons in the world.
“Ok…well the wedding is in a week. If you talk to her some more you can invite her. She seems really cool, and really likes you. I can tell you like her too”
The teasing started, and Naruto expected for his friend to explode, but his friend’s answer surprised him beyond words.
“I was planning on that…”
Had the Uzumaki not been careful and very composed while driving, Sasuke’s admission that he liked the girl and even the confession that he was planning on talking to her and perusing…something, was enough for Naruto to crash into a fence.
Truth be told, Sasuke already texted Hinata, despite the fact that they left the hospital barely a few moments ago.

it’s probably been done but lemme just add to it so here we go
SUITORS AND sort ofmaybe HELPING YOU STUDY
right.
Leo Crawford - being an actual, living and breathing encyclopedia, Leo is the person you want for objective type questions. Great help when it comes to last minute tips since he can give answers to random questions popping in your head. Probably can win gameshows back to back but doesn’t want the publicity. Can’t remember the distance to the sun? When exactly was it that Carthage got burned? That very specific provision of the tax law regarding exemptions given to corporations employing people with disabilities? He knows it all, and then some. Helps you make flashcards for better memory skills. THE PERSON YOU WANT TO STAY UP LATE WITH because srsly Leo get some sleep. The person everyone goes to after exams so he makes it a point to finish early and escape. Don’t ask how he remembers so much information in his head; he’ll quiz you and you might get distracted because with every wrong answer, you owe him a kiss
Louis Howard - best study buddy ever because he calms down your nerves. You see him poring over the materials and all you can think of is that must be how gods look at sacred texts. That, and whenever you can’t understand something he explains it in a way that makes it easily understandable (or is it because of his voice?) Motivates you always to give 100 percent in everything because his very existence is inspiring. Almost always ready to go with you to a cafe to study. Avoids the library like the plague (because too many students) Sends you motivational quotes over social media. Probably snacks on healthy food and gives you some because they say it helps. Unfortunately, HE IS NOT the one you want to sit next to when it’s actually exams. Chiller than the airconditioning that’s making you sweat. Doesn’t even sweat even when answering ridiculously long math questions. Amazing.
Sid - He’s almost always in your face but conveniently disappears whenever you’re in study mode. As a matter of fact, almost completely leaves you alone whenever you’re at your desk, except to check on you that you aren’t forgetting to eat or drink or relax. Actually quite nurturing when hell week is just around the corner. Makes a wicked cocktail that he swears doesn’t contain uppers but you’re very very focused after a good night sleep. Very prone to placing random snacks on your table which may also contain random sample questions to help you prepare. Scoffs at you when you feel down because you haven’t finished reviewing - and the next day suddenly a summary of important points is at your table waiting to be read. ABSOLUTELY THE PERSON you want to approach if you want materials - whatever those materials may be: annotated notes from last year’s valedictorian, powerpoint presentations from a professor who doesn’t want his laptop touched, sample exams and suggested answers dating back to 20 years ago, that one book your professor swears by but has gotten out of print? He’s got you covered.
Giles Christophe - Probably will scold you a bit for not sticking to a study schedule but will help you cram (not recommended). Even in this AU, it is very much discouraged to have him help you cram because you feel like your brain is going to explode with the info overload. BUT has notes for everything. Everything. The entire textbook has been annotated by him. IT IS A MESS tho. No sentence was left unhighlighted. Even has notes of his own notes. Has notes of other people’s notes. Has notes for professor’s notes even, with scribbled emojis and recommendations on how to improve them. Gives you very good sample questions that feel like they’ve been plucked straight from national exams. The kind of well-crafted questions that you hate because it took you 30 mins to answer each bloody hypothetical problem, but will be grateful for because it was a really good question and it appeared in the exams - whaaaaa? YES GILES HAS 90% ACCURACY at predicting questions it’s infuriating and also super helpful for practice tests. Sometimes you wonder how he’s able to do it. Has an annoying (but super convenient)  way of knowing exactly what the teacher wants to read on the essay questions since he gets near perfect points for everything and he didn’t even get the answer right and you kindofhateithimforit.
Byron Wagner - study? what study? Or rather, when is Byron bloody Wagner not studying?? What we call study is actually leisure for him - have you seen him do anything except read and stare at the stars communicating with the Elder GOds? NOPE. The person you want to stick with at the VERY BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER because his work ethic will put you to shame. The kind of student you wished you were, which helps you get motivated and also maybe partially depressed; because can he please tone down on the prodigy aura? And what do you mean you didn’t even highlight your books?? Engages in long hours of discussion with Leo about certain topics; probably tag-teams with Leo and Giles to debate with professors too. Has a certain knack of breaking down difficult theories into bite-sized chewable paragraphs. That, and he never shoves it in your face that you should do better (take a hint, Giles) Srsly. Stick with him to the very bitter end. Will splurge and treat you when you show him how much you’ve improved. Will still splurge even if you didn’t. Byron is happy you’re trying and believes all effort will bear fruit.
Nico Meier - very very very enthusiastic when you declared that it’s start of hellweek and you need to get down and dirty. Did not actually get the memo that you meant down and dirty with academics. Was very confused when you showed up in PJs with stacks of papers you ordered from Sid. Is constantly hovering to tell you you need to take a break. Always volunteers to make you tea and snacks. Helps you shopping for stationery, pens, sticky-notes - all the ammunition you need for studying because he knows all the sweet spots: thrift stores, quaint coffeeshops to spend 12 hours in, 24 hour hobbyshops that get quiet past midnight so you can hole up in a room without a bed. Very very very helpful in everything sans the actual studying because he’s actually a very loud learner: memorizes things out loud, has hilarious/scandalous mnemonics for every goddamn enumeration there is, listens to recorded lectures without moving a muscle; sends you memes in the middle of the night about how time will pass but WILL YOU??? You study with him and you’ll end up laughing how he comes up with all the fun. It’s hellweek, you should be crying but Nico just knows how to cheer you up to your core.
Albert Bruckhardt - went to seminars on how to curate schedules and has an ENTIRE MASTERPLAN dedicated to helping you ace the exam. Ohboy, get ready to have your entire life study schedule re-arranged for the sake of the coveted passing grades. Leaves you wondering how little you know of time management and your own schedule. Is very strict during study sessions, and knows you have a soft spot when he smiles and uses it against you thesneakylittle . HAS APPS FOR EVERYTHING. AN EMBODIMENT OF what is good in studyblr community. Doesn’t take it too seriously if it took you extra hours before being able to finish a review? No problemo, Al’s already got a plan B. And C. And D. Seriously, this man can run a multi-billion corporation on his own.  You learn the meaning of preparation, and he’s living the lifestyle. After the exams, you feel like you’ve fundamentally changed as a person godbless
Robert Branche - heavensent because he’s tutored you before and knows your strengths and weakness. That, and his part-time job as a tutor has helped honed his teaching skills to an art form. Whenever he’s tutoring you, you feel like you’ve just enrolled in another academy all of a sudden. Patient. Kind. Understanding. Knows how to push you without pushing too hard because he knows you’ve already got enough on your plate and just wants to be supportive. Leaves random handwritten messages in your notes to help you smile. Somehow knows whenever you’re in a slump and listens as you rant AND GIVES YOU good advice too. Makes sure none of the younger boys interrupt or get in your way when you’re on study-mode. ACTUALLY ADMITS things when he doesn’t know them and makes it a point that both of you learn together but those instances are far and few in-between. You know Robert is on the top of his class but the question is, you’ve never actually seen Robert hit the books since he’s almost always at the art club. HOW?????
Alyn Crawford - the only sane person in the entire world whom you feel like you connect with because both of you are normal compared to the eight other men. He’s got acads troubles just like you do - I mean it’s not because he’s more inclined to home economics or because he’s not as smart but it’s just that he cannot be bothered. HAS A SURPRISING LAZY SIDE when it comes to acads. He’s like your comrade and the academics are the Enemy. STILL VERY SUPPORTIVE. Will listen to you ramble because he knows you learn better when you try to explain things to other people - and please he’d really rather you explain it to him than to anyone else. Loves cooking for you whenever both of you are up for a long night. Loves cooking for you, just because. His coffee is not as good as his twin’s but hey, it’ll do and seriously, with the two of you throwing questions at each other, staying awake is the least of your worries. Like his twin, Alyn loves contests and that’s what makes studying with him unique. For every wrong answer, a household chore is gonna fall on your shoulders. That or a set of push-ups or shooting hoops. Because physical activity helps memory?? PLEASE. You’re skeptical but Alyn isn’t backing down and hubris isn’t letting you back away either. 60% of the time both of you are goofing off and Leo and Louis act as referees, shouting sample questions from Sid and Giles at the sidelines; until Giles calls all of you over because guys, you’re not getting any studying done. AT ALL.

Deadly Devotion | I
Blood covers her shoes and arms. She desperately tries to scrub the red liquid off but it's not budging. Her hands clutch the marble sink as she looks at herself in the mirror. She's shaking uncontrollably and she didn't realize until it was too late that she had stained the sink with bloody hand prints. She screams as she rakes her hands through her hair. She tries again, snatching the soap from the cabinet, pouring the lavender scent all over her arms and white sneakers. Turning the water on, she tries again to wash it off. "Get out! Get out!" She yells. She doesn't understand how this could happen. Tears cover her face as she gives up and collapses to the ground.
She sits up in her bed realizing the tears that wet her face. She wipes them with the back of her hand as she feels the sweat stained sheets from underneath her. She looks at the clock. 5:19 AM.
"Fuck," she whispers to herself as she stands up, removing her sheets.
She has these nightmares often even though it's been a little over two years. She always wakes up in a pile of her own sweat and tears. She wishes it could just end. She is forced to relive it almost every week and each time, she can never fall back asleep.
The scent of coffee fills her nostrils as the machine disperses the caffeinated beverage into a white mug. She never waits for the coffee to cool down, she just sips it when it's scolding hot which ultimately burns her tongue but she doesn't care. Usually she would pour a shot of whiskey into the mug but last night, she ran out of the liquor she despises so much. She hates whiskey but that's the point. Making people think she's someone else. And sometimes even convincing herself that she's someone else.
Her name is Charlotte Lemoine according to her ID and that's how she introduces herself. Although she didn't want to, she had to change it because no one else in the world is named Mamrie Hart so people would know exactly who she was if she were to introduce herself as that. And that's definitely not what she wants. She also changed her appearance. Her hair is dyed light brown now and she wears brown contact lenses. That's how the majority of the people here look so she's able to blend in with the French crowd. She's developed somewhat of an accent over the past couple of years but people can still tell that she's from the states. A lot of her customers ask where she's from and she always tells them New York, which, of course, is a complete lie but again, that's the point. Plus, people in France are pretty much only familiar with California and New York so there are no more questions asked when she answers with "New York." Although, she does hope one day people will just think she's from around here. But her French isn't exactly the greatest. It's much better than it was before thanks to Le Café Marie.
When she first arrived in France, she didn't have a job. Le Café Marie was right across the street from where she lived so she decided to apply there. Luckily, the owner, Louise, spoke English well enough to communicate with Mamrie. Louise had owned the café for 40 years. She told Mamrie that it had been a family business, and was passed onto her when her mother, Marie, died. Mamrie took a liking to Louise and they got along well while working.
"Charlotte dear, if you teach me more English words, I'll teach you some French."
And from that day on, they'd each have a "word of the day" pinned to the board in the back room. One in English and one in French. They made a little game out of it. They each had to use the word in a sentence to each other while working. It was fun and educational for them but it did earn them a few confused glares from customers, which made it even more hilarious.
After a year of working at the café, Mamrie found out that Louise was sick. Some type of rare cancer. Mamrie was right beside her through it all. The doctors gave her three months to live and Mamrie was devastated. Even though Louise was in her 60's, she was still the closest thing she had to a friend in France. She was the only person Mamrie interacted with regularly and she even spent countless hours listening to all of the incredible stories Louise had to tell. And now, the only person she had was dying. The week before she died, Mamrie told her everything. She told her her real name and why she left home to come to France. Laying in her hospital bed, Louise listened to Mamrie as she sobbed and relived everything. She stayed silent until she was sure Mamrie was done speaking.
"Well, Mamrie, I love your name. Belle."
Mamrie looked at Louise in awe and whispered, "Merci."
The fact that Louise didn't comment on Mamrie's whole story and only decided to say something about her name, made Mamrie confused but somehow relieved. A few days later, Louise brought up something that Mamrie hadn't even thought about.
"Can we talk about Le Café?"
"Oh uh yeah of course. What about it?"
"I want you to have it," Louise said as she took Mamrie's hand.
Mamrie looked at her with wide eyes.
"What? W-why me? Won't your children want it?"
"No no. They're off doing other things. They wouldn't want it," Louise paused, "But if you want it, I want you to have it, Mamrie. Everyone knows you there and you're great with the customers. I have no doubt in my mind that you'll make le café an even better place. Continue ma and I's legacy."
And so, Mamrie left the hospital that day with a pair of keys and a signed paper that stated Le Café Marie was hers. Well, Charlotte's.
The next day she had two coffees in hand, ready to bring to Louise but as she rounded the corner, she heard a noise. It was the sound of someone flatlining. And it was coming from Louise's room. Mamrie dropped the coffees and ran inside to find doctors and nurses standing and looking at the lifeless body in front of them.
"Why are you just standing there?! Do something!" Mamrie cried.
"Elle nous a dit de ne pas ressusciter, madame."
"What? She signed a DNR?"
The doctors pushed her out of the room because she was a mess and she knew it. She slid down the wall and gathered herself in a ball on the floor, trying to calm herself down. Louise was the only one who knew and she was gone. After what seemed like hours, Louise was being wheeled out in a body bag.
"Oh Jesus Christ," Mamrie began to cry again.
A few minutes passed and she felt a small tap on her shoulder. She looked up and a doctor held an envelope with the name "Charlotte" written on it.
"Charlotte?"
Mamrie nodded.
"Um for you?" The doctor said, clearly struggling with English.
Mamrie carefully took the envelope and opened it when the doctor left.
Mamrie,
If you're reading this, the doctors must've found it under my pillow and given it to you...or you must've just been snooping around and found it...either way, I'm glad you're reading this. As you know, Le Café, is now yours. But that's not the only thing I'm leaving to you. In my Will, it states that everything goes to Charlotte Lemoine. Everything. Now before you get all pissed at a dead woman, hear me out. When I was diagnosed with this illness, I called my children. They said they were sorry for me. That's it. They didn't visit me or anything. So please believe me when I tell you that you're the only person I want to have my things. After everything you've been through, you deserve it. Take the money and save up to go find the girl you love. Go visit her. Or at least call her. Tell her you're alright. Tell her you're alive. She's probably in a lot of pain. Go fix it. Go mend her heart. You may sell Le Café Marie if you decide to move back to the states or you can sell it if you just don't feel like dealing with it anymore. I won't be upset. Oh, I want to be cremated and spread in the basement of Le Café, that's where Ma is and I'd like to be with her. Word of the day: Voyage Example: faire un voyage (take a journey)
Au revoir, Louise
P.S. I am not asking, I am demanding that you contact your amour.
She has that note framed and keeps it next to her mirror so that she'll see it everyday. She made a vow to herself and Louise that she would continue the "word of the day" game. She finds different French words on the internet and writes them on her hand each day. It's a part of her daily routine. Along with getting drunk alone.
She hasn't touched the money she inherited from Louise yet. It sits in her bank account, collecting dust like the books stored under her bed. She refuses to spend the money even though she's really struggling with rent and Le Café Marie isn't cutting it anymore. But she will not spend that money just to pay bills. She needs to do what Louise told her to do with the money. But she won't. At least not now. Someday. Un jour.

MA Fashion and Textile Practices Major Project Path - 21st March
Today we had a seminar Colour Is Emotion & Intuition, which was really interesting as it discussed how colours became recognised and how they can effect our emotions and well-being. As well as a discussion on intuition which is something we all are aware of and invariably use but without knowing the processes behind it.
Of course when we think of colour we most likely think of Sir Issac Newton as the scientist who developed the first circular diagram of colours in the mid 1600′s, through the way he observed the way each colour of light would bend as it passed through a prism. He was the first to recognise colours as primary and secondary and thus produced the first colour wheel relative to that. Since then the wheel has seen many guises, but these principles remain the same.

What I found particularly interesting was Newton’s illustration in the book Opticks, Or, A Treatise of the Reflections, Refractions, Inflections & Colours of Light (Newton et al., 1979) where he related the significance of colour to the musical scale, where he has split the circle into 7 parts relating to the seven musical tones or intervals of the eight sounds; Sol, La, Fa, Sol, La, Mi, Fa, Sol. D-E represents Red, E-F is Orange and so on, so the transference from one colour to the next should result in varying degrees of intensity between each colour and all the myriad degrees of that colour between. How it relates to sound is really fascinating as he envisaged this is also like the space between musical notes thus enabling him to understand how light is broken down into sections.

In the above illustration by Newton each of the letters around the circle represent the notes of the Dorian mode, the only scale which shows symmetry and is equivalent to the white notes of a key board starting at note D..... I just find it really interesting how he related colour to music in the first place. In my notes I wrote Synesthesia?! Did Newton have this condition?
In her article on the website Live Science Bradford (2017) discusses that Synesthesia is a neurological condition which causes the brain to process data in a way that use more than one sense at a time, the name Synesthesia comes from the Greek phrase for "to perceive together”. This condition is quite rare and only occurs with every 1 in 2,000 people. There are around 60 different types of Synesthesia, some of which are:
Smelling certain scents when hearing certain sounds.
Seeing music as colors in the air (music-color synesthesia) - maybe Newton had a version of this type of Synesthesia?
Tasting words (lexical-gustatory synesthesia).
Feeling that certain textures cause certain emotions (tactile-emotion synesthesia).
Feeling that time has a physical characteristic (time-space synesthesia).
I remember reading a story about a guy years ago who would see pyramids and diamonds forming in front of him when he heard music, a little like the form of synesthesia called "conceptual synesthesia," in which they see abstract concepts, such as units of time or mathematical operations, as shapes projected either internally or into the space around them.
Article: Bradford, A. (2017). What Is Synesthesia?. Retrieved from https://www.livescience.com/60707-what-is-synesthesia.html.
So it is no surprise to learn that a lot of musicians and artists have this condition and clearly use it their advantage. This also struck a chord with me again when our lecture Colour Is Emotion & Intuition moved on to discuss the Russian born artist Kandinsky and his pioneering contribution to colour art theory. Most people will recognise Wassily Kandinsky’s work, he is often referred to as the ‘father of abstraction’ and is widely credited with creating the world’s first truly abstract art. It was his later theory work at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany that made me think his elements of his work seemed to stem from the condition Synesthesia.
Kandinsky declared he felt an “inner necessity” to express his emotional perceptions in a non-representative way, to use colour and form as basis for his abstract work. In his first book On the Spiritual in Art - which was a theoretical treatise - Kandinsky established that non objective art had a philosophical basis and that colour had specific feelings and emotions linked to them. In his book Point and Line to Plane he took his theorising further by initiating a set of rules on which to establish grounds for his ideology by discussing that certain shapes and elements used in art had relation to certain colours, or the use of specific symbols together with colour could induce specific emotions to the viewer.
I downloaded this book and read some of his theories for myself. In ‘Point’ the first section of the book Kandinsky (1926) discusses the meaning of the positioning of a point on a plane (i.e a piece of paper) and its relation to its surroundings. In this case he is using the point or full stop in a sentence. The more the point is moved away from the words the less connection it has with them and becomes an entity in its own right. Here he wrote;
‘As the surrounding space and the size of the point are increased, the sound of the print is reduced and the sound of the point becomes clearer and more powerful.’
Here he is saying the size of the point has resonance to us as a viewer in relation to the text. It is exactly the same in graphic design where elements and text on the ‘plane’ have to be in relation with one another but still have some negative space or intersection between them to resonate with the viewer and to be aesthetically viable. To me it seems that all elements within art, fashion and graphics etc. have to have a relationship with each other in some form. Whilst merchandising products at work I have in my mind that the products that sit with each other have to have a ‘relationship’ to the next or it doesn’t work aesthetically, it’s the same principle here as anywhere in design.
There was an article written by Ossian Ward (2006) in The Telegraph in which was it discussed by sceptics that synesthesia was nothing more than a subjective invention and that it wasn’t proven that Kandinsky had the condition. As a child Kandinsky would recall a strange hissing noise when mixing paint colours together in his paintbox, later on hearing Wagner’s opera Lohengrin in Moscow, he stated;
“I saw all my colours in spirit, before my eyes. Wild, almost crazy lines were sketched in front of me.”
In 1911 he was similarly moved by a concert Schoenberg gave and two days later finished his piece Impression III (Konzert). He was incredibly inspired by music and believed our response to his art should come from within as does our response to music, and not from what his art should represent in the real world. He once said;
“Colour is the keyboard. The eye is the hammer. The soul is the piano with its many strings."

I particularly like this piece, to me it represents something so typically 1920′s glamour. Along with the title it makes me think of dancing flappers and the jazz players of the time. The piece seems to have such movement and life, as if those dancing flappers and jazz players had come together in one place. I can also see how 80′s surface pattern prints were inspired by the 1920′s and the Art Deco aesthetic, as the wavy lines and strong geometric shapes are synonymous with that look.

Ah... it's mid-February and it's all about Love (brought to you by Hallmark, lol) Around this time every year I recall my youngest son and his girlfriend (now wife) asking me to drive them to Olive Garden for Valentine’s Dinner.  I drove them there only to pull up to at least 100 people standing outside waiting to be seated.  I smiled and thought, “Good luck with that” and let them out and said, “Ok, you kids have fun!”  If you love someone you enjoy their company even if it’s waiting in line somewhere.  If you’re with your dreamboat romantic partner, give them an experience that out does any gift.  Some people enjoy words, others enjoy gifts, and deeds, others enjoy touch….which one are you?  Which one is your current or past mate?  If you’re single, don’t give up hope, not everyone who is with someone is happy.  Think of things in terms of the universe grooming you and improving you so that you can resonate and match up with that ideal lover that finishes your sentences as well as your pasta!
One of the very first MyBeliefWorks™ audios we ever put out a few years ago Having Ideal Love & Creating Dynamic Relationships WILL clear out a ton of ick that may be blocking or preventing you from realizing your full romantic potential.  We've put it at a special price of $39 through this Sunday so pick it up today CLICK HERE

Q) Jimmy what you think of this?  Russia china Iran all have tech to shut down grid?  Also you think of dangers 5G network. I know we have God. How else can we protect ourselves? I know you're around a lot of you know super advanced people and we need your advice. " - R.R. and J.J. / California A) I do not subscribe to all of that or worry about 5G or the Russians are coming or the boogey man. Most times all of this runs on fear (politics, religion and society) and good vs evil and it keeps all of us down/depressed and sad. Ignore it and live your best life now and as if each day is your last and one day you’ll be right……….attitude is everything. - Jimmy From an MLF Mastery student: Q) "On page 12 of your "Spiritual Healing Techniques" you write to test your name before stating "I AM CLEAR." In my notes from level 1, I don't see that you said we needed to start with testing our name. A friend who read the book corrected me in the way I was clearing.  Please clear this up and tell me which way is best." - L.L. A) "Thanks, that’s a great question…………the book was sold to the general public so when folks start out it’s important for them to say my name is………and my name is Nemo the fish to establish Yes and No…That step is for folks who have never done this before. Once you’ve done it a bunch it is not necessary to say your name every time……spirit knows it’s you …….I jump right in to I am clear, unclear and running forward several times a day to dial in to work on things and before every client……………..I hope this helps……..all the best." - Jimmy

pecha kucha
my last part of the message/audience/context focused on my arrest at a kill the bill protest. we were protesting the governments proposed police crime and sentencing bill that aims to criminalise ‘noisy protests’, give the police more power over stop and searches, and further criminalise the GRT communities
i was experimenting with screen printing for this project, and was focusing on screen printing onto newspaper as a way to reach my audience. i wanted to screen print onto the sun but i didn’t want to buy a copy so i had to make do with the metro, but i found an article in the paper about the race report that came out claiming that the uk isn’t a racist country and thought it would be quite powerful to screenprint these words over that
i came up with the idea to ‘hack the bbc’ as a new way of reaching my audience and created a series of idents that i would subtly add my own message to
for my culture and context unit i was looking at how neoliberalism effects marginalised identities, focusing partially on trans people and how our lives are often the subject of ‘debates’ around issues that have no place being debated on. i’ve included an instillation from the artist Emmett Ramstad, he says that
‘the fence is emblematic of this neoliberal agenda in the United States and the idea that one can purchase safety, privacy, and freedom if you have the means. Single stall “gender neutral” bathrooms awkwardly reflect the institutions that make them. the piece is a reflection of the ‘othering’ our society forces on trans people
from my previous work and my own interests and ambitions in life it seems like the best focus point for the synthesis project would be art as activism. as someone who is very politically active it feels only natural that i would bring my activist influences into my work
this is the poster i created a few weeks ago when i was still finishing up the last project. it’s more of a mindmap really of all the different things i’m interested in, themes i was exploring previously and new directions i could go in the next project.
my keywords were taken from the work i was doing in the last unit and the brainstorming i was doing for this unit. really the last slide was full of keywords i could have used but here i just tried to narrow it down to five, though they may change in the future depending on where my project goes
to me, art as activism is something that feels like a often overlooked part of the art world. activism is the reason we have the rights we have to day, the reason we are closer to achieving a more equal society and the reason we often have such strong communities.
art and activism go hand in hand, as the decisions we make and our core values are often always political, whether we realise it or not, and that extends to the work we produce
in the book, paper politics, Josh MacPhee talks about printmaking as a medium of expression and the connection between the printmaker and their art, and by extension the connection between the artist and the audience. i think the work we produce is often an extension of ourself and thus anyone who is viewing our art is viewing a part of the artist.
thinking about what josh said about prints being an extension of the artist, and because i’ve been both working with digital and print in the past i thought maybe for this unit i could try to find the cross section between these three areas. maybe focusing on the moving image aspects of digital work and if it’s even possible to bring printmaking into a digital world
i’ve been doing some research into the history of art as activism and how artists and collective use art as a medium of protest. as well as looking at the influence art movements from history have had on more modern day artists and political campaigns. i’m gonna go over a couple of the things i’ve been looking at here.
dadaism satirised the bourgeois capitalist society of the early 20th century and has had a lasting influence for the past 100 years, especially with the zine movement that rose in popularity in the 70s and 80s through the DIY punk and queercore scenes
so aids activism and queer activism in general is something that is really important to me. kieth caring is one of my favourite artists so i’ve used him as an example here but there are countless artists who’s work has had a massive influence on the community and the work these activists were doing in the 80s is still important to this day
emory douglass was an artists i was looking at during my last project. he’s a designer who worked for the black panther party during the 60s. he created a wide range of posters including these anti-american war posters, that pointed out that the real fight was at home, with home being america and the fight being the civil rights movement.
russian constructivism has had a clear influence on activist and political art for the past century. you can see a clear connection between the original styles and the work of shepard fairey, the designer who created the obama’s ‘hope’ campaign
finally we have a video from the hacktivist group Electronic Disturbance Theater showing a mobile phone application intended to guide individuals who were making their way to the United States through the deserts of the U.S./Mexico borderlands to water.
