When were you first made to realize you weren’t considered beautiful because you are dark? At what age did you start realizing how dark skinned people, especially women, are treated? The day I was born, my uncle pointed at me, laughed and compared me to his fair-skinned daughter. I’ve been un-learning the hatred of my skin colour ever since. ❦ ➳ Dark skin is beautiful. Melanin is magic. It took me a long time to even think of beautiful as anything other then white. In my own head, when I thought of myself as one day being beautiful, I could not even picture myself, because my imagination could not even conceive of beautiful being someone of my skin colour. It’s because there was absolutely no representation of anyone who even remotely looked like me for a long time. It’s why I’m grateful for @mindykaling and will always love her forever for simply existing as she is.
