hi! sorry it took me a couple days to answer. admittedly, it's been a little while since I've read bly fic, so I polled a couple people to see what they said and looked back at my bookmarks and went through the tag for fics and authors I remember are great :)

we universally recommend Afterglow by sigmalied, which is probably one of the best fics in the fandom period. sig's writing is stunning, to say the least. you might also check out Teallach!

I'm a fan of anything by tigerlo, but beloved, bereft, bereaved is canon-compliant and fantastic. it fills in the blanks.

shame on everyone (involved) by andawaywego (another terrific author I'd highly recommend) is short and sweet from Hannah's POV and looks at dani and jamie getting together.

this one's a little angstier (as bly canon-compliant fics tend to be because. yeah.) souvenirs you never lose by novel_concept26 is excellent. novel never misses 10/10 would also recommend anything else by them. bonus: who am i (that i should get to hold you)

summer's gone and i'm alone (i get the feeling that you’re somewhere close) by goldenslumbersfanfiction is a terrific multichap dani character study that gets me every time.

I Don't Know About The Lake (But Every Time You Say My Name You Make Ripples In Me) by Iamasortofvillain is a multichap and this author has several canon-compliant multichaps or longer fics to take a look at!

shameful bonus: whimsy in the weeds is one I actually wrote lol. but it's canon complaint and expands on jamie's backstory.

Looking Ahead...

In the past week I've posted two polls. One asking if TE2 should be our next book club or something else but then I had the thought of doing a The Deadliest Game book club and put a poll up for that. It seems like a lot of people are interested in that, but not until the general release which will probably be in 6-8 weeks since VIP starts now.

So I have a few ideas.... I'll put a poll up later but would love feedback thoughts.

Option #1: Traditional The Elementalists 2 Book Club: two chapters a week/Saturdays~ starting April 6 This would mean NO The Deadliest Game book club most likely unless I have time to do 2 book clubs at once (which I can't promise)

Option #2: Informal TE2 Book Club (month of April) + The Deadliest Game Book Club (starting with the General Release): For TE: read what you can, when you can (no formal schedule) during the month of April. This probably would mean no chapter specific polls and more broad open ended questions/prompts Traditional Book Club for TDG

Option 3: The Haunting of Braidwood Manor Book Club: one or two chapters/week for April 6-27 + The Deadliest Game Book Club (general release) Full polls, questions, and posts for BOTH books since THoBM is only 6 chapters

Option 4: Take April off and resume with a The Deadliest Game Book Club with general release (I'm assuming in late April-May)

hi, idk if you take gif tutorial requests or not, but how did you make the text appear in the ghost story set with thobm? thank you!!

Hi!! I'm more than happy to explain :D Making a text fade in is, in my opinion, is a relatively simple process that you can do both on video timeline and frame animation, but I have a tendency to overexplain things, so this tutorial is probably longer than it should be. I hope you can bear with me lol

with video timeline

okay so, if you are working with video timeline, go to your text layer and click the little arrow. so that this list of options will pop up.

click on the little clock next to the word opacity and a little diamond will show up where your indicator (the blue arrow) is. That is your first keyframe, where the fading in will start. Go to the layer window and change the opacity to 0%.

then move the blue arrow to where you want the fading effect to end and then change the opacity to 100%, photoshop will automatically create a new keyframe. And it's done, that's your fade effect!

You can move the keyframes too, if you want to change the length of the effect. Personally I prefer to have the first keyframe a little later (not at 00:00), I think it looks smoother when it doesn't start right at the beginning of the gif, but that is a personal choice.

If you want your text to fade out, the process is the same but reversed. You go to the end of your gif (or to whatever point you want your text to fade out at) and create 2 keyframes. Make first one have 100% opacity and the second have 0% opacity.

with frame animation

if you are working with frame animation, first you need to make sure that this little box is NOT ticked off (basically make sure it looks like in the picture). This is important because otherwise any change you make to the first frame will apply to the rest and that would be a mess

Now, with frame animation you have to manually change the opacity of each frame. So say you want to use 5 frames for the effect, for example, since 100/5=20 the opacity would increase by increments of 20% for each frame. Select the frame where the effect will start and then change the opacity to 0%

Then select the next frame and change the opacity to 20%, etc etc. Here is what it would look like:

if you want the effect to be slower, the increments will have to be smaller. So, for example, for 10 frames it would be like this:

Depending on the amount of frames you want to use, you might not be able to use the same increments. For example, here I used 7 frames and the increments sometimes were 14% and sometimes 15%, but it is not noticeable, the gif runs just as smooth.

If you want the effect to start later, not right at the first frame, just make the frames have 0% opacity until you reach the point where you want the fading to start, then start increasing the opacity. And of course, if you want the text to fade out, the process is the same, but you decrease the opacity with each frame.

And that is it! I really hope that was understandable, especially the frame animation part. If you need me to explain myself better, or you would like more screenshot to see what I mean, feel free to ask!

Cadybear's Reviews- The Haunting of Braidwood Manor

Welcome to the second official Cadybear's Reviews post! Today I'll be talking about The Haunting of Braidwood Manor, which I have ranked on the "Gold Tier" at 8 stars out of a possible 10.

I’ve played this about 4 times. Mainly because I needed the diamonds and this one is 6 chapters, so it’s easy mining. Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed this one. 

The story was pretty linear, but it was interesting and compelling with memorable characters, and it works fairly well as creepy paranormal horror. And a few points do even make me want to cry. However, I do have two nitpicks. Like, how did MC make the connection between her brother’s death and Braidwood Manor? Unless I missed something even after playing the story 4 times, it felt very out-of-nowhere and unexplained. And how come Eleanor is the only one that can be brought back to life but not the rest of the Waverly siblings? That’s not fair at all. But for the most part, those are pretty minor issues. 

It’s also kinda neat that we have a story where the main LI is female while the male LI is sidelined. Actually, I wouldn’t even say Victor is sidelined– he’s straight up a total non-character. I mean, I’m not a fan of sidelining LIs at all, but considering how so many books have treated female LIs now, this one is at least a rare change of pace. And I say this as someone who is very wlm. And I say “wlm” and not “straight” because quite simply, I don’t think I’m really straight. And Eleanor Waverly is one of many female Choices characters who I can thank for helping me realize that. Seriously, it’s super adorable how she’s supposed to be this cold stoic ghost, but then gets really blushy and flustered when you flirt with her. 

Though, as much as I appreciate the sapphic ghost romance taking the full spotlight… this book is rather pointlessly genderlocked. And probably the first ever Choices book that I would deem as such*. I mean, all you’d really need to change is the dialogue in that one set of choice options when Clarissa asks for help writing her letter. 

In the canon version, Clarissa assumes you know how to write letters to guys, and you get an option to say you’re actually into girls, and then she says how she’s cool with it and she considers sapphism very sophisticated if you choose said option. For a playthrough where you’ve chosen a male MC, she could maybe assume that you’d know what guys like to hear from girls, you could get an option to say you’re actually into guys, and she’d say it’s very sophisticated if you choose said option. Easy as that.

And as far as I’m concerned, Eleanor is only canon sapphic and not lesbian (but do correct me if I’m wrong). THOBM, I am sad that you are the start of the pointless genderlocking trend /jk

*Technically ROE is the first Choices book I could consider pointlessly genderlocked, but I’m a little more uncertain on that because there’s a handful of scenes that would need tricky coding changes such as the bachelorette party/girls night scenes. Or even before that is TFS, but I’m also a bit dubious about calling it pointlessly genderlocked because Kaitlyn is a lesbian and has a whole arc revolving around her coming out about it to her parents– but people have said that aside from Kaitlyn, the story and MC are very gender neutral, so do with that what you will. There’s also LH, but I’ll say my thoughts on its genderlocking in its own review.

So it didn’t have anything that really wowed me, but it’s still a great story that holds a very special place in my heart.

I went forever vehemently denying Jamie was wearing the same shirt as Dani does in the “we’ve got a problem, Poppins” scene, even though a pink satin shirt would never realistically seem fitting in Jamie’s wardrobe. Your anons have set me right and I now walk the path of enlightenment, having now had the the button on the pocket and the ruffle design on the sleeves brought to my attention, it’s now obvious that this is the same shirt. I will now send myself off to a deserted island for 38 business days to reflect deeply on this matter. Thank you, all.

Let me not add my thought that when you put on a piece of clothing or any accessories that is of significant weight, you do so deliberately and that there is a thought process behind it: you put it on, you think of her. You see yourself in the mirror with that shirt, you think of her wearing it and the seemingly mundane things she’s done with it on - tending the flower shop with you, maybe go shopping with you, maybe sitting across the table from you, eating lunch with that smile that fits her so well that lets you know she’s content and happy to be here with you. You take it off, and it’s like losing her all over again. I am not saying that this is a woman racked by grief and loss that she will do anything to get back to a moment with her wife, and I am not saying that it is breaking my heart once again.

it’s been a long time since I’ve found myself in these asks. in the times between chapter 10 & 11, I was here A LOT. I still consider BHAH one of my favorite stories I’ve ever read and I’ve reread it atleast three times. Other chapter have (like 9 & 11 have been read even more than that). Unfortunately, I am waiting probably another year before I read it again (I haven’t read it since Chapter 12 came out) just so I can try to experience it fresh. How does it feel to be a semi-famous-amongst-a-very-niche-audience-and-simultaneously-be-completely-anonymous? Must be pretty exciting. That book someone made also of BHAH!!! It’s perfect and I wish I could swoop to the nearest Barnes and Noble and pick up a copy for myself. I’ve always considered printing out yours and Roman’s story just to have it, but maybe I should take up a certain art of book binding first. Anyways, the reason I came here: I’m reading The Stand by Stephen King right now and it’s 475k words. It’s a monster. I’m nearly done with it, but I’m so ready for it to be over. BHAH was only 100k less and it still felt too soon for it to be over. First off, how the hell did you guys basically manage to write a Stephen King novel just based off a 9 part series? Second, how did you make it so goddamn entertaining? The whole time I’ve been reading this, I’ve just been contemplating what you guys must have went through because seeing the physical evidence of a 400k word novel in book format is insane. You don’t get that same experience scrolling on a screen. So, essentially I just came here to say again how much I love your story and also say how absolutely insane the two of you are. You’ve made a lot of people extremely happy with your story. If only it wasn’t illegal to sell on shelves, I think it would be considered a classic in the LGBT section of the book store. thank you so much oh my god this is so sweet. honestly every time i get a message like this i'm still so surprised how well loved it is. i personally don't particularly feel like any kinda semi famous fic author lol thobm has such a small fandom after all but it is a first time that something i co-wrote got this much attention

and honestly i have no idea how we managed to write something that long and coherent while still being entertaining and gripping. we both agreed though that (in roman's words lol) that the key to making a long novel not seem like a huge slog is to make sure your plotting is even across big sections (ie/ our massive chapters lol) while still maintaining an overall structure. even having each chapter or pair of chapters feeling like they each have their own little mini arc because usually the past and present would complement each other in some way which meant that we pulled off a good ebb and flow effect

so in other words like...a lot of rambling in the dms and being super obsessed lmao

maybe one day we could officially publish it but no promises lol

Hi, I knew OJC has PTSD, but I didn't know that he'd created Peter Quint's backstory himself. This whole time I thought the Bly Manor writers had knowingly foisted that graphic monologue onto a RL abuse survivor, and to be honest, I had thought that was a little gross and insensitive of them. Knowing it was written with the actor's full consent and collaboration makes it so much better. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!

yw! i had followed all the press for the show so i did know that it was something he'd come up with himself but i can definitely see how it looked that way if someone didn't know. he also collaborated on miles' character during certain scenes (if you know you know) as well as peter's cultural background which he said he chose for specific historical reasons and was inspired by a photography exhibit of 1960s working class scotland. i know it didn't work for everyone who watched the show but there was some thought behind it.

mike flanagan and the rest of the cast deserve a great deal of credit of course, but there's a lot of real oliver's input all over the haunting universe if you know where to look : )
