i'm biased, but i do sincerely believe the relationship between thomas more and thomas cromwell is due for a reassessment. that more may have been sincere when he referred to cromwell as "he that tenderly favoreth me" and "my special tender friend" in his letters from the tower; that cromwell became a godfather to one of more's grandsons in 1538; and the paucity of contemporary evidence for personal enmity between them all imply, at least to me, that their relationship was much more complex than is usually portrayed.
