I posted it first to my other art blog, but then I decided it'd be a better fit here :p

We're now playing 'big names, lesser known works' but the next polls will have better known works.
When the other polls will be out, they'll be in my 'fantasy polls' tag.
Okay, this time that's really it for the night for the fantasy polls. See you !

it's my birthday, so as a hobbit present to you all I humbly offer this thing I wrote: a novel length (71k) original work, posted on ao3 because that's where my people are. It's a slow character driven contemporary fantasy about a software engineer's queer awakening, and it's also a retelling of the ballad Thomas the Rhymer. It's more Becky Chambers than Tamsyn Muir, but it does have a lovable dumbass protag falling in love with incomprehensibly ancient weirdos with mysterious agendas. I'm mortified to have ever written it so I promise I won't mention it again.

Doodles from days ago and yesterday, kinda had the urge to doodle-dump my version of Tam Lin, a character closest to Vasilisa The Beautiful, and my versions of Child's other ballads (Thomas the Rhymer, Alison Gross, and Sir William & Lady Maisry) ever since I reblogged the previous folklore & ballad polls,,,

It was mirk, mirk night, there was no starlight;
They waded through red blood to the knee,
For all the blood that’s shed on earth
Runs through the springs of that country.

This is all coming from exactly 0 research on the scottish folk story the sequence is based on but. Thomas the rhymer. It does not make sense that the faerie queen would punish them (them?) for lying, not in the “you will henceforth be virtuous” way. Because a big thing about faeries is they can’t lie, but hoo boy if they could. They can’t lie and already manage about fifteen layers of deception in every sentence (see also-- “I might be selling snake oil but I ain’t no liar” THAT MEANS NOTHING THOMAS).
So I’ve decided that the faerie queen isn’t mad they lie all the time/ in general, just that they lie to her (and, crucially, that she can’t do it back), and that’s how the transition from parts one to three happens.
Or maybe I’m horrifically misinterpreting every part of the songs.

The name "Rimmer" is lofty for a different reason. The ruin of the legendary Rhymer's Tower is found in Earlston, Scotland.

Appearing in Europe in the late Middle Ages, the ballad form combines poetry, story, and song. An eclectic art from, traditional ballads could be romantic, sorrowful, historical, or even saucy. As stories that were told and sung time and again, they often changed as they passed hands, resulting in many versions of a similar tale, though there are some common themes throughout – gallant knights, joyful young women, naïve lads and illegitimate children.
Where some ballads may concern themselves with true (or at least, influenced by true) events, real life problems, and romances, others deal more with the supernatural –ghosts, spirits and, quite often, fairies.
This week, Mythos takes a look at some of the most famous fairies found in British Ballads.
