Folktale week!! Rebels - with witches !!! Costume - which is actually based on my village’s folk clothing. Sadly there weren’t much resources about it. That was all for me this year. Hopefully next time I’ll be able to properly plan ahead :’)  Tree and Star

Folktale Week, day 2: Tree
The tradition of wassailing (or toasting) an apple tree is done in January to wake the tree and ask for a good crop of apples in the coming year. Last years cider is poured on the roots and stale toast tied to the branches.

My drawing of Vasilisa The Beautiful for the final day of Folktale Week! I made it just in time ✨ For “Found”, I decided to depict the scene where Vasilisa has just been gifted the boon of light by Baba Yaga for completing all of her tasks, and with burning skull-staff in hand, Vasilisa quickly and easily finds her way home through the dark forest. I decided to try my hand at a different sort of fairy tale/illustration style for this drawing, and it was fun, but also challenging. I’ve been asked many times over the years to draw Vasilisa, and I’m glad I finally got the chance to!

Folktale week 7: Found
This one is very loosely inspired by The Wild Swans, by Hans Christian Andersen (and also a call back to day 1: Lost, of course~)

🌿🎉 SURPRESA ✨🌿🎉
This year I'll be getting back to my folky roots and participate for the first time of #folktaleweek2023 ✨🌷
The main idea is to bring you some of my favorite of Brazilian folklore, as I did you in this lovely fanart of a traditional clay sculpture of the Boi Bumbá.
Boi Bumbá, also known as "Bumba-meu-boi" or simply "Boi," is a popular folk festival celebrated in various regions of Brazil, particularly in the states of Amazonas and Pará. This traditional Brazilian cultural celebration is a unique and colorful event that combines elements of music, dance, theater, and folklore.
Boi Bumbá is a dynamic and diverse festival that showcases the rich cultural tapestry of Brazil, and it is a popular and cherished tradition for those who participate in and attend the festivities. ✨🎉
See you in Folktale Week! ✨🌷🌿🤲🏼

Friederike Hauffe, the Seeress of Prevorst and Dr. Justinus Kerner for Folktale Week on Instagram: Day Four: Sleep. ☄️ Mrs. Hauffe (1801-1829) was a German mystic and "sleep-waker" who could see the future, communicate with ghosts and spirits, see the time of people's deaths, and sense magnetic fields. She lived in the house of Dr. Justinus Kerner as a patient for an unknown chronic illness for three years while he wrote a book about her visions and attempted to scientifically study ghosts, clairvoyance, and the afterlife.

“And so she stayed on with them and kept their home in order. In the mornings they left for the mountains in search of ore and gold, and when they returned in the evenings their supper had to be ready"
From Folktale Week 2020, the prompt was 'Harvest'

Folktale Week 2023 - Lost
This piece, like all the others, is a late submission, but for Lost, I decided to depict a part from the Polish fairy tale The Bear in the Forest Hut. Essentially, this maiden had just been abandoned to a dark and expansive forest thanks to her envious and cruel stepmother and her lazy and entitled stepsister, who twisted her father's arm into making her wander the world alone with just some bread. Little would she know that her fortune would turn around soon in this tale that is part Mother Hölle, part Beauty and the Beast.

folktale week day 5: underground
It wasn’t long before they came across the gnomes, who kindly offered to let the girls stay the night with them. “But we can’t promise you directions,” said one of them. “Lately, the Birch Queen doesn’t seem to like us, or anyone, and she’ll twist the trees around you until you can’t ever find your way out.” “Is there a way to get past her?” asked the younger girl.  The gnomes shook their heads sadly. “Not that we know of,” one of them said. The older girl shushed her, and thanked the gnomes for their hospitality. “We will find our way,” she said uncertainly. In their cozy underground warrens, lit by candles and blanketed with leaves, the gnomes laid a feast for the girls, as they did for any visitor. It was delicious, with four courses of all manner of roasted vegetables and meats, cakes and pies, soups and breads. But the older girl couldn’t keep her mind off of what was to come.  When they left in the morning, the gnomes bestowed upon them a compass that would show the way north no matter what tricks the Queen pulled. “May it help you on your journey,” they said as they watched the girls go, certain that they would never see them again.

Gnomevember 2023, fourteen
“Ink.”
Continuing with Folktale Week as well, and though folktales come from oral tradition first and foremost, may we honor and invoke the ink in which all books of such stories are written, nowadays.
Featuring a common opening to German folktales, as collected from here.
“Back in the days when it was still of use to wish for a thing…”
And here are some other favorites, as collected from here (though note, if you check it out, the list is not the most politically correct.)
“‘Twas not in my time, ’twas not in your time, but it was in somebody’s time…” (Irish, what what!)
“It all happened long ago, and believe it or not, it is all absolutely true…” (Also Irish!)
“A story, a story, let it come, let it go…” (West African)
“Beyond seven mountain ranges, beyond seven rivers…” (Czech)
“Many years ago, in a time when memory was young…” (Indian)
“Long, long ago, soon after sky and earth had become separated so that there was room for trees to grow and the tribes of men to move between them, many gods and spirits still lived in the world…” (Maori)
“Now we are about to begin and you must attend! And when we get to the end of the story, you will know more than you do now.” (Andersen)

#FolktaleWeek2023 November 14: Ink ✍
Cordel literature is a form of popular literary expression that originated in the Northeast of Brazil. Its name derives from the way pamphlets were traditionally displayed and sold: hanging on strings in markets, squares, and fairs. These pamphlets are printed on simple paper, often with colorful illustrations, and contain narrative poems that address a wide variety of themes, such as legends, love stories, social issues, political critiques, historical events, adventures, and everyday tales.
In addition to the literary aspect, cordel literature plays an important role in preserving Northeastern culture and traditions by transmitting popular stories, beliefs, values, and customs from generation to generation.
Woodcut prints are traditionally used for illustrations in cordel literature. Woodcut is a relief printing technique where an image is carved onto a block of wood (usually a hard wood like boxwood or hardwood). The artist carves the desired image onto the surface of the wood, leaving the raised parts that represent the figure or illustration. This wooden block is then inked and pressed onto paper, transferring the image onto the paper surface.
The woodcut illustrations in cordel literature are distinct for their handmade style and unique aesthetic, often featuring simple lines and striking details. Artists who create these woodcut prints have specific skills to carve the wood in a way that creates clear and sharp images that complement the poems and narratives of cordel.
While digital methods are used for illustrations nowadays due to technological advancements, woodcut prints are still highly valued for their connection to tradition and authenticity in cordel literature.
