Three fer Thursday

I’ve now applied for 50 jobs. I got ONE of those jobs but for family reasons I can’t keep it (also I came down with Covid in the first 3 days on the road). Of the other 49 applications, I’ve had 4 interviews which have then all ghosted me. I have a Class A CDL. I’m a professional driver, FFS. And I got ghosted on a job delivering Dunkin Donuts.

I’m seriously broke. The last 3 months have been a shit show, health wise and work wise. And my dog died.

Maybe today I’ll try to do some Instacart shopping/deliveries. Things have got to get better.

2. What is their romantic preference or inclination?

Odette doesn’t have the words for this, however, I label her a demi-lesbian. Like all labels, this is subject to change but I've called her this long enough I think it's gonna stick. I joke that she develops crushes on everyone, and this is true in the sense that a crush is often simply infatuation. And being infatuated with people is fun! Even she knows these aren’t anything of substance but just her finding people Neat. Anything past that innocent crush takes longer to bloom and even longer for Odette to admit what it means. 

12. How do they feel about one-night stands?

She’s never had one because -- well. Gestures. I don’t think they’re really her jam. She is young and naive enough that I think she could stumble into one accidentally (she does experiment with drugs and some of those heighten your emotions, I think it would be easy to build enough of a bond over the course of an evening for it to happen…) but it would leave her -- confused. 

We’re just suppose to never talk again??? We were inside each other???

I do think she’d be able to maintain a casual friends with benefits relationship, because she loves her friends and there would be an understanding and intimacy that she needs.

13. Are they openly flirtatious/sexual, or are they quite private?

(: I don’t think Odette has ever flirted on purpose. If she did, I don’t think anyone else would even clock that she was flirting with how awkward and clunky it would be. She’s naturally very complimentary of people -- if you see beauty in someone, you must speak it -- so perhaps people could read that as flirting but… The not openly flirting isn’t even a privacy thing! She simply doesn’t know how. It’s something she’s been thinking about for a while. Most of her friends are in long-term relationships or otherwise happily paired off and while she knows a romantic relationship does not a whole person make… it does get to be a bit much, being the constant third or fourth or even fifth wheel. She knows flirting is often harmless and leads to nothing but it is also the way one signals interest in another. And if she can’t figure out those signals, is she just stuck?

Does Old Sharlayan have classes on the art of flirting?

(She would never be openly sexual in public, time and place and all that, but there is a timeline where she is comfortably openly sexual in private.)

I think I am gonna make it a threefer and also reread William Stearns Davis’ Beauty of the Purple which is all about Emperor Leo III and his OTP. It’s a good 100 years old but still worth it. Honestly, Davis deserves to be better known - his novels always were so rich in detail, with awesome characters (none of whom felt moderns playing dress up) and epic battle scenes.

PS also found a novel whitewashing Caligula! Caligula! Is nothing sacred? This said, I always did wonder at the reason for the disconnect between the popular and functional young Caligula/early rule Caligula and the psycho he became later.
