thyGeekdom BUMBLEBEE[movie]REVIEW
“...this is exactly the closest thing to what we could ever hope from a Transformers live action film, thus far.”
By: Antonio E. Cortés Bermúdez ¦ 01/12/2019
It was a very human story in the best possible way. Hailey Steinfeld, that little girl from True Grit. What an amazing actress. We’re blown away by her performance carrying this film as Charlie. This is the best live action Transformers movie yet, and just a great movie overall. Don’t know what it took for Michael Bay to let go of the directing reigns, but we are so glad he did and hope he continues to do so, no offense to the man. He has some great work.Transformers, just ain’t one of them.
We absolutely loved it, and though it was a very human story with our  protagonist taking up most of the screen, Bumblebee was front and center through and through, though we got great character development from Charlie and her family. By the way, if you are a big fan or grew up on the classic 80s Transformers animated series, you are most definite going to love their depiction in this film. Allot of them do come out at a certain point of the movie, no spoilers, but let’s just say they look just like they were taken out straight from the small screen.
We believe this is exactly the closest thing to what we could ever hope from a Transformers live action film, thus far. The balance between Transformers and human screen time was perfect. This is a fresh start and reset to this franchise, and we hope is telling of what is to come from the series moving forward, cause if this is indeed the route they are going to take from now on, then we cannot wait, we cannot wait to see what’s in store for this franchise moving onward.
This film gives you a great sense of hope. Its about friendship. Its very empowering for people that are going through the thick of it, a rough patch, a tough time, mental and emotion agony and frustration. It was about true friendship, loyalty and Charlie finds that in Bumblebee. The acting was spectacular overall. Why John Cena himself was quite the serviceable actor, who we’ve noticed gets better with each and every film he comes out in. But man, that Hailey Steinfeld…what a STAR. Just thinking about some of the emotional beats in this film will have you tearing up. That is a testament to her talent and prowess as an artist. Surprisingly enough, this is a very heartfelt and uplifting movie that shared some similar notes to some of our favorite indie films. It was a very personal story, a beautiful story that had us reflecting and pondering. With this, hopefully gone are the days of those close ups on girls’ butts, and silly but clever ads we dreaded in past Transformers’ movies, bringing on a welcomed and much needed evolution to the franchise.

thyGeekdom SPIDER-MAN: Into the Spider-verse[movie]Review
“Anyone can be Spider-man, anyone can do good, anyone can wear the mask.”
By: Antonio E. Cortés Bermúdez ¦ 01/13/2019
When looking back at all the previous live action, or on the big screen, Spiderman films from Raimi to Garfield, and most recently Homecoming, without a doubt, unanimously we agree that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is the best Spiderman movie to date, period! Miles Morales is our definitive Spiderman. Not only is this movie exceptional from beginning to end, but it is extremely innovative and revolutionary for the animation industry. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before, groundbreaking, combining comic book visuals with stop motion, cell shading, and CGI elements all under one roof. You see speech bubbles and drawn out sound effects such as POW, BLAM, CLACKITY CLACK, things of that sort throughout the film to highlight action sequences and set pieces, just like you would see in a comic book. Besides that, not only is the story amazing, no pun intended, there is so much heart to this movie, that delivers a great message.
What we loved, truly loved about this movie and why Miles is our Spider-man is mostly the message. Of course, we don’t want to take anything away from the OG Spider himself, Mr. Parker, who we have to give the second spot on our list of favorite spider men. We’ve always liked Spider-man, but he has never been our favorite superhero until Miles Morales took up the mantle in the Marvel Ultimate-verse. Through Miles Morales we learned to appreciate Spider-man, the original Peter Parker more because Miles’ development was a testament to how Peter inspired him and many others in the Marvel Comic-verse, including the spider men of different realities. Parker set an example, demonstrated what it really took to be a hero, and with this movie the message is simple, the message is clear. Anybody can wear the mask; anyone can be a hero. It can be you, me, it doesn’t matter. Its really about your heart and your spirit, the legacy of doing good in the world. You know, it’s about being there for somebody when they need you the most. That’s all being a hero is about, and Miles is proof of that.
Not only is Miles different from the traditional Spider-man, and overall most superheroes, you know being half black, half puertorriquen, considered a minority in this country, which personally I can identify with being from Puerto Rico, but Miles as a character surpasses being portrayed as just a stereotype of his community, of his cultural background, and instead becomes a hero based on his own merits, deserving of his title as Spider-man. He is Parker’s equal, not a side kick, not the substitute, he is Spider-Man just like Peter Parker is Spider-man… or was it Peter B. Parker? Anywho, Miles exhibits resilience showing that no matter where you come from, even if you are surrounded by people on the wrong side of the tracks whether it be your relatives, peers, etc., you can still be better, be a good woman or man, and strive for success. His story is empowering for us all. Some of us in thyGeekdom, in the community being Latino, specifically me puertorriquen, it is very empowering to see an original half-black, half-Latino original comic book character come to life and become Spider-man, the greatest superhero of his neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, something you don’t see much of still in media even today.
Miles lives up to the mantle, and hits the nail right on the head. Being a minority in this country shouldn’t detour you or anybody from their dreams and aspirations, or be a reason to lower your self-worth. Regardless your race, gender, sexual orientation, or the color of your skin, you should never feel underappreciated, under valued, unloved, or uninspired. You are unique and perfect the way you are. Be strong, be confident allow yourself to dream and chase your aspirations. Learn to dream big and trust in your own ability to achieve anything you set your mind to.
This movie is perfect for little kids. For many, this is the first time they will be witnessing and/or seeing Spider-man on the big screen, from this point on making Miles their Spider-man. They will grow with Miles being their Spider-man! And that’s beautiful. Many kids that are considered minorities in this country will see Miles, look up to Miles and see that if a kid that looks like them can achieve such a feat then they too can achieve anything. What a powerful thought to have. Miles is a kid, a simple kid who never dreamed of becoming a superhero, yet he lived up to that mantle, that title. He had to change his mindset and he did it, which shows that anyone can be a hero, do good, set an example for everyone else. Its not about having superpowers, its about doing some good in the world. Anyone can be Spider-man, anyone can do good, anyone can wear the mask.
This movie shows you the effect Spider-man has on other people, the whole idea of Spider-man of going through something negative and turning that negative into a positive, i.e. Uncle Ben dies for Peter and for Miles...well you’ll just have to watch the movie won’t you? There is a scene in this movie where every Spider-man shares their tragic story that inspired them and pushed them to change their mindset too, which led them to become a hero, their respective universes’ Spider-man. It’s the best animation movie we’ve seen yet, and we say that wholeheartedly. One of the best movies of 2018, hands down. Our favorite Spider-man movie to date, even better than Homecoming. Though we believe we did get the best balance of the duality of Peter Parker and Spider-man in Homecoming in a live action film, we absolutely loved the Peter Parker in this movie. Boy wait ‘til you see the Peter Parker in this movie. An older, unmotivated, at times bitter or depressed Spider-man who doesn’t care much for being a hero. There are so many Easter eggs for fans throughout this film from references to the Raimi films, to the clone saga, the animated series, the OG cartoons, the comic books and much more from Spider-man lore found in countless media. There’s just so much fan service to look forward to! Do yourself a favor and go watch this film.

thyGeekdom AQUAMAN[movie]REVIEW
“...joyful, hopeful, and ultimately loads of fun. There is pure enjoyment to be found here. A great blockbuster, probably the best or 2nd best movie in the DCEU when it comes to pure entertainment value.”
By: Antonio E. Cortés Bermúdez ¦ 01/12/2019
In this film, Director James Wan proved he is a great and visual story teller. The Visual Effects were spectacular. Atlantis, colorful and vibrant, almost like Pandora from Avatar & Black Panther’s Wakanda had a baby, and believe it or not Blade Runner, yes that’s right…Blade Runner, mostly at a point in the movie when two of our main cast enter Atlantis for the first time together, specifically when it comes to the music.
The action was spectacular, probably some of the best choreography and camera work in action scenes we have witnessed in years, and most definitely some of the best ever. There’s no shaky cam, thank Wan. He did a masterful job of allowing us viewers to see every detail and feel every punch. It felt like the camera was a character in this film. While characters were fighting, at times the camera would twist and turn as the cast would flip, move, and jump. Every single fight scene throughout the film brought OOMPH and a smile to our faces. It definitely brought us back to the good old days of watching that Dragon Ball Z yelling and intense fighting on Toonami. And that’s the thing, this movie is intense for better or worse. Your adrenaline is constantly pumping and although it is a pretty long film, we felt that it breezed through. So much happens and it moves quickly. There are many wondrous locations that are visited from Atlantis, to Arthur’s home town, Italy, and the dessert. The adventure you’re taken through mixes a variety of genres of movies. At times you feel like you’re watching a swashbuckling pirate movie, Raider’s of the Lost Ark, a classic Disney picture, with 90’s movie tropes drizzled all over. Oh, and did I forget to mention horror. Did you expect anything less from a master of the genre? There are two specific scenes that come to mind, but one specifically was a true, pure exposition and love letter to horror. Wan had us jumping on the edge of our seats several times in the theater, but more so when this scene occurred. Shout out to the trench!
Overall, the cast was great! Momoa demonstrated that he his a worthy actor by making us feel every emotional beat to effectively make us understand Arthur’s psyche, motives, and even insecurities. He made us relate and empathize with Arthur, a character that is superhuman and at times seems  overpowered, and even though we really believe that Jason Momoa was just playing himself in the film, we absolutely loved him for it and are excited to pickup more Aquaman comics from our local comic book shop to sink our teeth in that Waterman lore. We loved the whole main cast. Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, and of course the lovely and flawless, the myth, the legend, Nicole Kidman or as we like to call her NK, you know ‘cause we’re just that close ;). She definitely stole the movie for us, and without spoiling anything her fight scene…INCREDIBLE. We were impressed. Didn’t know she had it in her.
Of course, no movie is 100% perfect. This movie had its shares of flaws and drawbacks. The music selection was off for most of the movie, if not all. Not that the songs were bad, just not the right fit for what we were watching. Sometimes the music was overbearing or too on the nose. Literally, whenever there was an emotional scene or what was intended to be so, the music was too melodramatic, which didn’t allow us as viewers to really enjoy those heartfelt moments for what they were. Instead, the songs would deviate from what was intended to be felt from the scenes, making them seem cliche at times. We thought it was just too extra.
There was definitely something off with the script, as well, specifically with some of the lines. The delivery from the actors wan’t bad, but even Nicole K, who is a legend and masterful actor, who BTW never once phoned it in, could not make those lines bearable. Now going back to the intensity of the film. Though we were pumped throughout, it would’ve been nice to have some set pieces that could’ve brought down the intensity of the whole film for a bit. We felt an adrenaline rush throughout the whole film like drinking an energy drink turned up to the 10th degree on caffeine. For sure, it had us on the edge of our seat, hyped up in anticipation and excitement, but the energy of the film became overwhelming by the end. So with that being said, we definitely don’t recommend eating loads of sugar or drinking too much coffee before seeing this film. Better yet, if your sleepy and groggy, definitely, go see this film. It’ll be the only energy boost you’ll need :D. Though there were several cliche moments and scenes taking us back to those classic 90’s  TV show and movie tropes. We appreciate it and believe that it was the Wan’s purpose and intention to throwback to that era.
This movie was joyful, hopeful, and ultimately loads of fun. There is pure enjoyment to be found here. A great blockbuster, probably the best or 2nd best movie in the DCEU when it comes to its pure entertainment value. For sure, you’ll have a great time at the theater.
By the end, what we most appreciated and took away from this film was its message. What does it take to be a leader, and owning up to that responsibility? Arthur had no hopes of becoming king. Heck, as a matter of fact, he didn’t want it, and you see through the course of the film that he never once sees himself as a leader, especially not of a whole kingdom. He showed that he had, not only reservations of taking on such a role, but also many insecurities and uncertainties of whether he was even capable of such a feat. But then again, due to the circumstances he faces, he learned to push himself and live up to that ideal. He learned to value and believe in himself, lead him in the end to unite kingdoms and stopping a wars both under the sea and above on the Surface World in the process. Witness as Arthur becomes the man, the Aquaman he was destined to be.
