rereading Onica and Tavra's reunion just so i can get sucker-punched by that one line again.
which line? yeah...
“Someone you know?” Naia whispered. “Is that why you brought us here?” Tavra’s response was breathy with uncharacteristic relief. “Yes. Go, please.”
TAVRA'S VOICE WAS BREATHY. TAVRA! STOIC MC GROUCH GRUMBLE! TAVRA THE EVER GLUM, SOUNDING RELIEVED!!!!
”Do you think they’ll recognize you?” Naia asked… “I still have your pearl circlet, and Amri has your sword, if we need it to prove your identity–”
WAS THAT WHY TAVRA ASKED TO TAKE THOSE THINGS FROM HER DEAD BODY BEFORE THEY LEFT IT BEHIND??? SHE DOESN'T LEAD THEM ANYWHERE ELSE- SHE NEVER USES THE CIRCLET TO TRY CONVINCING ANYONE ELSE- SHE TAKES THE GROUP STRAIGHT TO ONICA! WAS SHE SCARED ONICA MIGHT NOT KNOW HER?
BUT SHE DOESN'T BRING THEM OUT RIGHT AWAY! WAS SHE HOPING THAT SOMEHOW, JUST BY THE SOUND OF HER VOICe (ohhh foreshadowing to her clan knowing and trusting her only by her voice-) WAS SHE HOPING ONICA WOULD RECONIZE HER??
The door to the cabin opened just as Naia raised her hand to knock. A Sifa with thick, windswept red hair stood in the doorway.... Her gaze went straight to Kylan’s shoulder.
SHE KNEW SHE KENW SHE KNEW IF TAVRA WASN'T DEAD THEN SHE WOULD BE THE SPIDER BUT UNTIL TAVRA SPOKE SHE HELD BACK SHE DIDN'T KNOW FOR SURE IF-
“Onica,” Tavra said, voice stumbling. “It’s–” Without hesitation, Onica reached out and gently scooped up the tiny spider in her hands. She held Tavra close, and her ocean-colored eyes filled with tears. “Tavra,” she said. “Thank the suns. You’re alive.”
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHGHHG
meanwhile, Onica @ Tavra a few pages later...
"When your mother does the right thing, it will be what is right for the Vapra alone. She wears a heavy mantel in Skeksis colors, and it will not be easily changed for a suit of armor. Not everyone is like you, my love."
;_; they aren't even married yet but she loves her girl so much and hates her mother-in-law already XD

I started to read Tides of the Dark Crystal by J.M. Lee so naturally I had to draw our protagonist Amri. He finds sandals baffling :)

*.°★* ✧ages of dark crystal characters*★,°*:.☆
After rereading the books again, I have compiled a list of all characters, who have been given ages (directly or indirectly), from oldest to youngest. I’ve mostly used canon from the books, and a little bit of information from the series. I thought this might be useful for anyone writing fics or just for people who are interested! I’ve gone into more detail on my reasoning, all with sources and quotes, under the cut.
Oldest to youngest
Seladon
Tavra
Onica
Maudra Ethri
Amri and Brea
Gurjin, Naia, Kylan and Rian
Eliona
Pemma
Mythra
Timtri
DISCLAIMER : Some of this information is blantantly stated in the books and in the series. However, as you will go on to see, a lot of it is my interpretation of different quotes in the novels. I am not saying that these ages are canon, it is just my personal analysis and judgment.
Seladon
This one is obvious, as since we know she is Tavra and Brea’s older sister, she is (obviously) older than them.
Tavra
Tavra is the next oldest, as we know that she is older than Naia : “Onica and Tavra were both older (than Naia)” (Tides of the Dark Crystal)
Onica
Onica could be the same age as Tavra, but I believe she is slightly younger as Amri says she is “young, about Tavra’s age” (Tides of the Dark Crystal) . I feel as though the word “about” insinuates that they are not the same age, and the fact Amri says that she is “young”, alludes to her being younger than Tavra.
Maudra Ethri
I know Maudra Ethri isn’t really a main character, but we get a good bit of information about her age. According to Amri (again), she “couldn’t be any older than Onica or Tavra” (Tides of the Dark Crystal) but she is “only slightly older than Naia” (Tides of the Dark Crystal). This leads me to believe that she is in-between their ages. Older than Naia, yet not as old as Onica and Tavra - just in the middle.
Amri and Brea
Amri could be the same age as Naia, Kylan etc, but I think the book implies that he is slightly older, although not by much. When Amri speaks to Maudra Argot in her chamber, he apparently  “sounded more juvenile, more Naia and Kylan’s age” (Song of the Dark Crystal). For me, this gives the impression that Naia and Kylan presumed Amri was older, as he acted/sounded/looked older, until that moment, where he didn’t sound exactly like Naia and Kylan’s age, but “more” like Naia and Kylan’s age. The inclusion of the word “more” suggests that he is not exactly their age, and based on their earlier assumptions, he is older.
We can also assume that Amri and Brea are the same age. In the Dreamfast/Far-Dream scene, we encounter Brea for the first time - “One was Amri’s age, ink smudged on her cheek” (Tides of the Dark Crystal). From this, it is clearly stated that Brea is the same age as Amri. She is only mentioned as being the same age as Amri, and not as being the same age as Kylan and Naia, which further backs up my theory that Amri is older/not the same age as Naia and Kylan.
Gurjin, Naia, Kylan and Rian
Gurjin and Naia are twins. So, there is no theory in any of that.
It is made clear that Gurjin and Rian are the same age in Gurjin’s dreamfast with Naia - “He was Gurjin’s age” (Shadows of the Dark Crystal). Therefore, Naia and Rian are likewise, the same age.
Reusing a reference from earlier, Amri sounded “more Naia and Kylan’s age” (Song of the Dark Crystal), insinuating that Naia and Kylan are, again, the same age. And so, Gurjin, Naia, Kylan and Rian are all the same age.
Eliona
Eliona is the “middling daughter” (Shadows of the Dark Crystal) of Laesid and Bellanji, and is “one trine younger (than Naia)” (Shadows of the Dark Crystal).
Pemma
I’m still not sure whether to put Pemma and Mythra at the same age or not, but I will tell you my reasoning as to why I think Pemma is at least a bit older. Even though Pemma is the “youngest daughter” (Shadows of the Dark Crystal) by the time Naia returned to Sog, “Pemmas wings had blossomed” (Flames of the Dark Crystal). Naia said that “it had been unum since she’d left”  (Flames of the Dark Crystal) so we know that not even a trine had passed. That means even less time has passed between when Naia met Mythra for the first time, and when we saw her again in the last book. Therefore…..
Mythra
…...since it is stated that Mythra is “young, still without her wings” (Song of the Dark Crystal) and there is no mention of her blooming wings in the last book, I think that Mythra must be younger than Pemma. From the point of view of J.M Lee, I think he would have mentioned that Mythra had bloomed wings, but since he didn’t, I think that gives the hint that Mythra’s wings still hadn’t blossomed. Obviously, it could be a case of her being a late bloomer, like Naia, however the fact that Pemma bloomed her wings in the time Naia was gone, and Mythra didn’t, implies that Pemma is older.
Timtri
Another obvious one. I think a little gelfling sitting on the floor “chewing on his feet” (Song of the Dark Crystal) is quite a bit younger than the rest of the characters.
And that is the end of my analysis! Again, these are not canon age differences neccessarily and is mostly just theory. I was inspired to do this while rereading the books, and quite enjoyed making it. I know this is different from the shitposts I usually make, but hopefully you guys won’t mind lol :D

ooh can i ask what story the girl turning into the spider is from? it sounds sweet!
oh uh... it's sweet in the sense that, even though pretty much everything goes wrong, some things still go right?
Tavra (spider girl) is a very stoic, somewhat blunt and socially awkward, generally grim, only ever laughs bitterly but will gently stroke your cheek and remind you to keep moving forward main supporting character in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance YA books written by J.M. Lee. (mostly in the third one, tides of the dark crystal) (SPOILERS) She's... kinda like the older sister figure / adopted mom / eventual one half of fav OTP to the three point of view characters? Her whole thing is being ready to sacrifice herself and her happiness for the sake of saving people, enduring pain without flinching even while telling others to be careful, repeatedly almost dying and smiling about it....
....except that she really, really, REALLY wants to see her girlfriend again, too. Especially after kinda sorta dying and getting spider-ed.
Her uncharacteristic rashness and nervousness when showing herself to Onica- and Onica's zero hesitation to reach out to the small spider that sounds like Tavra- is the first clue these two are A Thing.
They've been a thing for a loooong while. A forbidden secret romance kinda thing.
Onica turns out to be outwardly the sun to Tavra's cloudy day, except she's actually still VERY angry at Mayrin (Tavra's mother) for being a jerk, and VERY bitter over how Mayrin treated Tavra over their relationship- and while Tavra tries making excuses for her mom the best she can come up with in the end is a damningly faint "that was a long time ago". Which. Well.
Anyway, up till now Tavra has always taken on the role the Experienced And Steady Advisor and Guardian to her new younger friends, but once she's back on Onica's ship (Onica is a single crew sailing ship captain able to dream of things happening far away have i mentioned that?) Tavra starts finally relaxing enough to show some of the stresses she's been under lately, even going off and 'mope' when her attempt at teaching one young friend how not to get killed with a sword goes badly.
(moping is described as Tavra "just being Tavra") (her kinda new little sister is the one saying this) (Tavra can be recognized in any form by her dower frown) (especially funny when Onica is constantly described as laughing and chuckling and wearing a mysterious smile)
So blah blah blah, Onica is a the good kind of terrifying and almost dies, Tavra saves her via the power of gay flashbacks with the help of their new number 1 shipper-
Then Onica's bestie, who is in huge awe of Tavra, tries to push a traumatized depressed disabled woman in the body of a spider into leading all their people in revolution bc she'd be ideal for it- and Onica very pointed says that you can't help others if you don't take time to help yourself before going off to presumably snuggle her sad spider gf.
The two are last seen in the books as Tavra's sorta adopted teen son Kylan-
(who turned her into a spider to save while committing murder despite generally being a pacific presumably bc of the trauma of watch his birth parents get snatched away by murders as a child)
-decides to look at some runes, and Tavra says she and Onica will stay with him.
So. Tavra never gets her old body back, and her mom is murdered, and part of her soul is drained and eaten, and her sisters probably think she's dead- but she also does not die. By the end of the story she is happy with the family she has found, and finally fulfilling her and Onica's promise to someday live their lives as one.
Oh did i mention there's a parallel between her and Onica's secret forbidden romance and the more tragic example that kicks of the whole story?
Did i mention Onica calls Tavra "my love"?
And Tavra was a swordswoman before becoming a spider?
I don't know if you wanted or needed all this info and I don't care, there will never be enough stuff about these two written but by gods i will take ever chance to scream about them
And that's how my arachnophobia was cured!!!

I drew Amri from J.M Lee's Tides of the Dark Crystal 💖
He's really an interesting character, and I wish to see more of him. Would've been amazing if he was in the show. He's that kinda character I could just draw all day long.

What I Preferred in J.M. Lee’s Books
I’m currently rereading Shadows of the Dark Crystal. I don’t normally reread a series so soon after finishing the last book (literally two weeks ago), but Age of Resistance made me want to dive right back in. I already talked about the changes in the show that I thought were an improvement. Now, I’ll gush over the books and the things I wish the show had kept, or at least referenced.
-Naia, Kylan, and Amri: These three were the golden trio for the books, and I love them with every fiber of my being!
Naia is a hardheaded, but very empathetic protagonist, who has to leave Sog when she learns that Gurjin has been accused of treason by the Skeksis. Shadows shows her departure from Sog, her initial meeting with Kylan, and the discovery of her ability to dreamfast with any creature or plant on Thra. This ability allows her to heal the darkened Cradle Tree within the Dark Wood. Despite her hard-talking nature, she shows a great deal of sympathy for any creature in pain, and is wholeheartedly against killing the Skeksis once she learns of their connection to the urRu in Flames.
Kylan is a timid Song Teller from Sami Thicket who blossoms so much after joining Naia. He overcomes his feelings of inadequacy, learns that one doesn’t have to be a fighter in order to be a valuable asset in the war, and crafts the firca that Jen uses in The Dark Crystal. He’s also responsible for all of the Gelfling learning the truth about the Skeksis. This boy crafted a magical firca, then used super advanced dream etching in order to imprint a dreamfast onto the petals of Domrak’s Sanctuary Tree, sending them to every corner of Thra! Also, he’s the reason that Tavra isn’t dead, but we’ll get to that in a moment.
Amri was my absolute favorite character in the series. So, of course, he didn’t even get a reference in Age of Resistance. *sigh* He is a beautiful Grottan boy who is so happy when he’s given the opportunity to explore the surface world! Like Kylan, he deals with feelings of worthlessness in the face of his much more accomplished friends, frequently hiding his sadness by joking around. He suffers a lot more obviously than Deet when on the surface, never fully adjusting to the light of the suns, and trying to mask his Grottan qualities, such as walking in a half-crouch and listening to the voices of the rock around him. His romance with Naia is freaking perfect, and I truly hope we see him in season 2.
-Tavra and Onica: They’re lesbians. Not that you’d know that without reading the books. *le sigh*
Besides that fact, they both get way more development. Tavra is a constant figure in the books. I actually half-expected the fourth book to be from her point of view, rather than Naia’s. She also spends most of the series as a spider.
In Song, an Arathim takes control of her nearly-dead body after she is drained by the Crystal, using her to try and bring Naia to the Skeksis. When this is discovered, Kylan ends up dream etching Tavra’s soul into the body of the spider, while the spider’s soul is trapped in the Gelfling’s dying body. As a result, much of Tavra’s development stems from her sudden lack of ability to fight, speak out, or do anything she could do as a Gelfling.
In Tides, we meet Onica, a seer who was saved by Tavra from a horrible storm several trine ago. During this storm, she lost her wings, but she states that meeting Tavra far outweighed that loss. Tavra used to sneak out to meet her whenever she made port, and they wanted to sail away together to a place where their Clans didn’t matter! ARGH! I’m so weak for these two. Onica, through her far-sight, provides the first glimpse of the Wall of Destiny.Their relationship is a bit bittersweet with Tavra in the form of a spider, but their love is still strong by the end of Flames.
I’m hoping that, at the very least, we will get spider!Tavra in season 2.
-The Lighting of the Fires: This was only briefly referenced in the show, but it is honestly the heart and soul of this period of Thra’s history. Tides and Flames sees the trio traveling from Clan to Clan, convincing them to join the rebellion against the Skeksis. Shadows and Song also show them interacting with different Clans during their journey.
Because of this, we get a detailed look at each Clan, their members, and their customs over the course of all four books. We see each Clan decide to join the fight and light the fires. As each fire is lit, the homelands of the Clans are dream etched with images of the journey of our heroes, and the actions of each Clan. It also creates a stronger and stronger connection to the previously-lit fires. This eventually culminates in the lighting of the Stonewood fire, Rian’s message to Thra, and the creation of the Wall of Destiny.
I’m a sucker for worldbuilding, and the books definitely had the upper-hand in that department.
-The Explanation of the Skeksis and urRu: While skekGra and urGoh were an incredible, necessary addition to Thra, and while I loved their puppet show, it was a bit lacking in some respects.
In Flames, Naia and the others learn from urSu the full story of the urSkeks, and learn that killing a Skeksis will mean killing a Mystic. Unlike in the show, we actually see the dilemma the characters face due to that knowledge. Naia comes to the conclusion that killing the Skeksis and knowingly killing the Mystics would cause a darkening within the hearts of the Gelfling, similar to the darkening plaguing Thra. She realizes that healing the Crystal is the only true solution, and that the fires of resistance aren’t meant to be beacons of war, but of unity.
I like that the books provide a concrete reason for not sacrificing the Mystics, besides the “killing is wrong” rhetoric. It would have a negative effect on Thra and the Gelflings, because it would cause the song of Thra to become more imbalanced. I actually have a theory that Deet’s darkened state stems partially from the killing of skekLach.
The concept of duality is explored in depth due to Naia and Gurjin’s status as twins (a rarity among Gelfling). The Skeksis specifically target them, as they want to experiment on them in order to figure out a way to drain the urRu.
-The Deaths of urVa and skekMal: Both of these characters were more prominent in the books. We see a very genuine friendship develop between urVa and the trio, particularly Naia. Therefore, his death has much more weight when it occurs.
Also, the method of death is slightly different. Instead of jumping from a high place, urVa drives one of his own arrows into his heart. It’s strangely poetic. He states in the books that, while he shoots arrows, he is no hunter. He never uses them to kill...except for one time.
He is able to temporarily speak through skekMal in their last moments, urging Naia and the others to have hope, all while skekMal cuts in with curses and shouts. My heart was honestly pounding during that scene, and I’m a little disappointed at how it played out in the show.
-skekSa and urSan: The Mariner and the Swimmer are a Skeksis/urRu duo I desperately want to see in season 2. skekSa, the Mariner, acts as a protector for the Sifa Clan, and genuinely wants to leave the other Skeksis behind for good. However, when the Sifa agree to join the resistance, skekSa sees this as a betrayal, turning on the Gelfling in order to keep from being killed by her fellow Skeksis. Before skekGra, skekSa showed the most complexity and grayness out of all the Skeksis.
urSan, the Swimmer, is the one who convinces Amri to embrace his Grottan qualities, showing him that his unique abilities allow him to contribute in a way no one else can. She also actively fights against her Skeksis counterpart when skekSa goes to Sog to try and take Naia. While she doesn’t kill herself like urVa, she does give Naia the option of killing her, an option Naia  ultimately refuses.
There’s more, but these are the biggest points. Again, I cannot recommend the book series enough! I will eventually put together my version of canon, which melds the events of the books with those of the show. Both are definitely needed to truly enjoy this story to its fullest extent.
