Jimmy, Tiffany and their son Matthew moved to Desiderata Valley to start their idyllic suburban life. Tiffany works in the law career, while Jimmy is a politician. Both of them want more children and a pet or two. 🍀

Jimmy and Tiffany have a lot of friends around the Uberhood. Tiffany tries to meet with her college friends Heather Huffington and Brittany Upsnott as many times as possible. Reminiscing the good old days.. 😌

While the Phoenix' are at the very beginning of their happiness together, a few houses down, a newly divorced Jessica Picaso is dealing with her new life as a single mother. She knows exactly it was the right thing to do, but it still hurts. All she wants now is to be the best mother she can be to her daughter Paola.

A few days later was Paola's birthday so Jessica threw a birthday party for her. She invited all of Paola's friends, as well as her friend and coworker Cassandra Dreamer (née Goth). Matthew Picaso, Paola's father, was also invited but decided he had better things to do I guess. What a douche.

WHILE STREAMERS WATCHED THEIR FLICKS BY NIGHT...

Merry Christmas Eve Eve everybody! The Phoenix Film Critics Society...

...of which Your Humble Narrator is proud to be a founding member, recently announced our 2022 Award winners. As always, some of the winners--like Best Actor--reflect my voting, others don't, but there are a lot of movies worth seeing on the list.

A few other odds and ends...

Cash on Demand--Last week I was shown this 1961 gem I had never caught up with, a no-kidding Christmas movie from Hammer Films! It's available on DVD; I highly recommend. Peter Cushing plays a joyless bank manager, cold and critical toward his employees, who gets his Christmas Eve ruined when a suave bounder (Andre Morell) tells him that his cohorts are holding Cushing's wife and son hostage while he plunders the vault at the provincial branch. Cushing, unsurprisingly, is great--despicable at first, gradually shading into sympathy as his desperation rises--and Morell is sensational, in maybe the best role he ever had, as the sinister yet curiously charismatic thief.

Richard Vernon nicely leads the small ensemble that plays the branch employees. It's a gripping, imaginative caper, though of course it's just one more variation on the Scrooge story, with the robber serving as a felonious Ghost of Christmas Present.

Something From Tiffany's--Two guys, played by Ray Nicholson (Jack's kid) and Kendrick Sampson, buy jewelry at the title shop as Christmas presents for their respective lady friends (Zoey Deutsch and Shay Mitchell). One's a pair of earrings; the other's an engagement ring. A mishap mixes up the gift bags, and wackiness ensues. I was recently pointed toward this romcom, streaming on Prime. It's very undemanding, but it's inventive, Zoey Deutsch makes a sweet heroine and her costars, including the great Rose Abdoo as the Tiffany's clerk, are pleasant company. And it seems like it's a cut above most of the Hallmark Christmas movies.

American Murderer--A stalwart FBI man played by Ryan Phillippe searches for fugitive Jason David Brown, who was on the Ten Most Wanted List at the same time as Osama bin Laden and Whitey Bulger for killing an armored car guard here in Phoenix in November of 2004. As Phillippe talks to Brown's family and acquaintances we get his story in flashback (it's often different from what they're telling the agent). I'm late to the party on this true-crime drama released earlier this year, written and directed by Matthew Gentile and available on various streaming platforms. Don't let the poster fool you into dismissing this as a routine action flick; it's an absorbing feature debut for Gentile, a tense, believable piece of work, full of disturbing scenes that feel like something you'd witness as a passerby. Soap actor Tom Pelphrey plays Brown as a tightly-wound obsequious hustler, sort of a coked-up Eddie Haskell. Though he worms his way into the house and bed of his single-mom neighbor (Idina Menzel) and plays video games with her son, and though he can still get over on his own siblings, his Mom (Jacki Weaver) has long since recognized him for the callous creep he is. But even he isn't prepared for the psychic weight of murder, and Gentile gets across this internal horror impressively. It's worth checking out, maybe after Christmas.

Folk tales from the...

...reaches of the Sphere and beyond. Larger than life and maybe, but then maybe not, based on true stories. Nonetheless, firmly embedded in the hearts and souls of those who have grown up on the stories of their exploits and adventures:

Tall Ricardo, the pilot who didn't fit his cockpit. Tales range from "Tall Ricardo had to shoot the top out of his cockpit to let his head poke out" to "Tall Ricardo piloted an Atlas by wearing it like a mascot suit in a kiddie restaurant".

Jump Jet Jackie, who pilots the Stellarhawk, a modified Phoenix Hawk, and who waited at the (completely wrong) spaceport for her ship to come in for so long that she tinkered up her 'mech to fly between systems, and fights pirates and strange aliens in many a comic or storybook.

Aino Tiffany, youngest spy in the Combine. She combined a photographic memory with a natural curiosity to crack many cases of smugglers or infiltrators in her spaceport hometown. (There was also a TV adaptation, but most viewers agreed that the producers somehow managed to make the original plots even more nationalist, and the political intrigue ruined the simple mysteries.)

Mad Vlad Mavis, who stopped an entire strike fleet during the Third Succession War by donning a crazed mishmash of official-looking military apparel and screaming orders on every comms channel until he was red in the face, succeeding in making the invaders believe their own HQ had ordered them to return to base. To this day, spouting nebulous authorizations or pulling rank for matters that really don't need it is called Mad Vladding.

David Friedwald the One Shot Kid, who was facing down bankruptcy when he spent his last cash on a 'mech with a single autocannon round. He always brought in his marks for mercenary work, but never managed to keep enough of the bounty (due to misadventures, repair costs for the 'mech, bills to pay, etc.) to afford any more than another single shell to replace the spent one.

Big Nancy Brown, a mesa of a woman with an invincible smile and arms thick around as truck tires, who had a hundred suitors in any port of call, and with nothing but grit, wit and her trusty multitool pocket-knife survived everything from the Isle of Man-Eating Crabs to the Trackless Polar Wastelands. A 'child of Nancy Brown' is someone who relishes the need or chance to rough it.

Kumar Langdon, the pirate's pirate, a privateer legend who dismantled whole corsair armadas with rusty old freighters and a few dozen marines. They say he studied tactics so closely he could recite each move of each battle of each Succession War, all off by heart. He could win a fleet battle with a metal pail, an oxygen tank, and an automatic pistol.

Uberhood Pics (48) - Baldwin, Phoenix & Picaso

Not much happened at the Baldwin's. Marcus and his brother Elijah enjoy playing video games, Sofia is still happily in love with Daniel Bell & Benjamin is climbing up the science career track. I'm thinking of giving Isabel a little makeover and maybe even move the family out of their apartment. Playing in apartments is so annoying recently. I installed a mod and I think because of that every family got reset somehow? Anyway it led to the neighbors peeing themselves and them passing out constantly. It feels like they forgot they have an apartment they can go into. On top of that, everytime this happens, I get this little window showing me what's happening and it's very annoying. Not to mention the memory spam about it all. I found a fix for it but I am not sure if it really works or if I'm just lucky: I click on the sim, take control of them, and send them into their apartment. After I gave the command I immediately remove the control of them and let them do it on their own and it seems to work fine so far. Afterwards they leave and enter their apartment as they should. Let's cross our fingers this is the solution. It would be a pain in the butt to move every family out of their apartment just to make them move into a house.

Jimmy Phoenix & Tiffany Sampson got married this round. They now live in Desiderata Valley and expect a little bundle of joy. I am very excited what this baby will look like. It's always fascinating to me how the game plays with genetics. 😅

At the Picaso's a few things happened: Jessica had enough of Matthew's lying a* and threw him out. She caught him cheating with Hannah Bell. They even got caught by Jessica & Matthew's daughter, Paola. Living together got impossible so I made them divorce. To celebrate her new-found freedom I gave Jessica a little makeover. Right now she tries to focus on her daughter and her career.

Jessica rolled this want after divorcing Matthew. Really? She wants to apologize even though he was the one who cheated on her? She's traumatized. D:

I've mentioned before about a borderlands modern au idea and I want to show what I have.

Lilith Cashlin

Leader of The Firehawks (a biker gang in the city of Sanctuary which mostly consists of her friends)

Still trying to move on after her boyfriend was murdered by the Hyperion president.

Works at the city museum along with her socially reclusive friend Tannis.

In place of Lilith's siren tattoos, she has a full arm and leg sleeve tattoo which consists of dragons, phoenix's, unicorns and other fantasy elements.

Took in Angel after her father was arrested.

Is pretty close with the city's local con artist.

Angel Coldwell

Daughter of Jack Coldwell, President of the Hyperion corporation.

Was homeschooled most of her life and because of that, she's a bit naive, socially awkward and has developed social anxiety.

Would have recurring nightmares about Jack coming back to get her.

It was revealed that not only was Jack connected to a series of murders (one of the victims being his own wife), but he was also conducting inhumane experiments on people who he'd bribe/threat/kidnapped.

While incarcerated, Jack pleaded to anyone that would listen that he would never hurt his daughter and was very protective of her, the bruises and bone fractures said otherwise.

Along with that, it was also revealed during the trial that Jack was about to do said experiments on Angel shortly before he was incarcerated.

Jack has since been sentenced to death row.

Harley and Tiffany Williams

Parents of child prodigy, Gaige Williams.

Harley is a retired engineer and part-time boxer who owns his own gym in Sanctuary.

Tiffany is the owner of the Sanctuary Science and History Museum and is an elementary teacher at the local school.

Gaige Williams

Child prodigy and honor student.

Doesn't have many friends due to them sending her as weird and nerdy.

Was the only one that offered friendship Angel since she's an outcast as well.

Lost her arm at a young age, but she now has this really cool robotic arm (with help from her dad) that can crush concrete so that fine.

Christmas In Clearwater & Phoenix’s Plight

hello fall out boy fans who sim and simmers who listen to fall out boy, i have a build for you all:

i spent the last few days creating a little home where every room is a different album or ep (soul punk and truant wave included, as i made too many rooms. oops), even the exterior has a theme. i did use a cluster of packs but it’s limited to six, and none are expansion or game packs, so hopefully everyone can place it fairly easily.

everything is based off visuals and vibes, but i do believe a large chunk of rooms will get the point across. the common thread between them all is that this is a home for plant lovers! every room, minus the basement and kid’s room, have at least a couple plants.

a breakdown of the rooms + their themes and additional photos below the cut:

basement (take this to your grave): this one was a bit hard for me because tttyg isn’t one of my top albums, so i ran short on visual references, but i do believe i got the vibe down just enough. the general basement atmosphere helped significantly. ironically i added the boneyard fish tank without any thought to the theme.

MAIN FLOOR

living room (american beauty/american psycho): this is arguably the most normal room in the house. abap to me is very bright with warm yellows and cozy greens, its summer. tried to tie into the lyrics of “the kids aren’t alright” with the bear chair and photos of (what i presume) those long gone.

bathroom (pax am days): the thing about pax am days is while it’s fall out boy going back to their hardcore roots, they are in a mature state as individuals and an band. so this one ties back to the brick walls of the basement, but classier. it’s also just straight black. because i love dark bathrooms lol

kitchen (mania): this one was hard, and i erased everything i previously typed because i had a different idea and reworked the entire room. the new version is more cohesive than the original and spacious. small references are the obvious purple wall, but also a glass ceiling over the breakfast nook for "i hope the roof flies off."

dining room (soul punk): this one is definitely more stylized and i actually love it a lot, probably my favorite room. i just picture parties where the attire is formal but fun happening in here. if you place this lot for any reason whatsoever, please let it be because i spent at least 20 minutes making the boxes off the album cover out of individual neon lights.

SECOND FLOOR

main bedroom (folie à deux): this was like mania in as much as it was kind of a bad decision, but i think i made it work. references: color (obviously), butterfly photo ("disloyal order"), baseball bat ("headfirst slide"), mirror ("pavlove"), black dress ("tiffany blews"), and of course, the gnome in the bear outfit (which i affectionately call the "folie gnome" and try to remember to place in most of my builds).

master bath (truant wave): this is all color palette vibes. i just kept picturing the cover and love a brown toned bathroom with pops of green. but also the lights over the sinks, so you can have your own spotlight.

hall bath (so much (for) stardust): again with the black bathroom theme, but this time with pops of pink and touches of yellow. plus dog art! gotta have dog art. used the string of pearls light fixture again because a) love plants, and b) bubble-like.

kid's room (infinity on high): was absolutely bless with the photos that came with this album. it's not exact by any means, but it's similar. no sheep or grasshoppers in basegame, but we have a couple llamas and some ladybugs for replacements.

teen's room (from under the cork tree): to be honest this was a struggle to find the right vibes with the wallpaper and paints, but i ultimately like it. references: made sure to use a bed with proper bedposts, yes there are 16 candles on the dresser, postcards, and more!

shared bathroom (lake effect kid): this one is like the master bath, color vibes more than anything.

EXTERIOR

landscaping, etc. (save rock and roll): of course i saved my favorite album for my favorite part of building <3 lots and lots of red, layers upon layers with the flowers. apple trees to tie back to the videos for "young volcanoes" and "just one yesterday," as well as the pickup truck, and of course a fire pit*. all tucked away within a classic picket fence – which is the entire reason i created this, had "miss missing you" in my head then thought to myself, "i do love the picket fence in the sims.." and here we are!

*the fire pit that should be functional (it's one i pulled from another build i made and it did work), just have you sims light the tiny fireplace in the middle.

(the halls are very generic, to give the illusion that this is a normal house lol)

LADY GAGA IN DIOR FOR JOKER PHOTOCALL

Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are finally promoting "Joker: Folie à Deux"! The pair, alongside director Todd Phillips, stepped out for a photo call for the new movie as part of the 2024 Venice Film Festival earlier today in Venice, Italy.

Gaga kept it demure, clad in designs from the house of Dior.

The plush black velvet cocktail gown is a couture piece which was first presented at the 2022 "Dior Print" haute joaillerie collection by Victoire de Castellane. It features an amphore waist with a square neck and subtle crinoline.

Her veiled beret was created by Stephen Jones for Dior‘s Fall/Winter 2019 Haute Couture collection.

Her eyewear of choice are the Oliver Peoples Birell Sun shades in glossy black acetate ($482). These feature a three rivet dot detail and tinted grey lenses.
