Outdoor dining and social gatherings have always been a cherished way to enjoy nature while spending quality time with family and friends. One essential piece of furniture that enhances this experience is a well-crafted timber picnic table. Whether set up in a backyard, a public park, or a commercial outdoor space, these sturdy tables provide a stylish and functional seating arrangement for any occasion.
Why Choose Timber for Your Picnic Table?
Timber is a timeless material known for its durability, aesthetic appeal, and natural resistance to outdoor elements. Unlike plastic or metal alternatives, timber exudes a rustic charm that seamlessly blends with outdoor environments. It is also an eco-friendly option, as many high-quality timber tables are crafted from sustainably sourced wood. With proper maintenance, a picnic table made from timber can withstand harsh weather conditions while retaining its beauty for years.

Benefits of Timber Picnic Tables
Durability & Strength – Timber is naturally robust, making it an excellent choice for long-lasting furniture. Its sturdy construction ensures it can handle heavy loads and frequent use without deteriorating.
Aesthetic Appeal – The warm, natural tones of timber add elegance to any outdoor space. Whether you prefer a classic or modern design, a wooden picnic table complements various landscaping styles.
Weather Resistance – Treated timber can resist moisture, UV rays, and insects, making it ideal for outdoor use. Regular sealing and staining help maintain its quality over time.
Versatile Designs – Timber picnic tables come in various shapes and sizes, catering to different seating capacities and space requirements. Foldable, extendable, and custom-built options provide additional flexibility.
Eco-Friendly Choice – Many timber furniture manufacturers source wood from sustainable forests, ensuring that environmental impact is minimized. Choosing a timber table supports responsible forestry practices.
Choosing the Right Picnic Table for Your Needs
When selecting a picnic table, consider the intended use and location. If you frequently host large gatherings, opt for a spacious design with built-in seating. For smaller patios or gardens, a compact and foldable version might be more suitable. Additionally, think about the type of wood used—hardwoods like teak and eucalyptus are excellent for outdoor durability, while treated pine offers an affordable yet resilient option.
If for casual family meals, barbecues, or public seating areas, timber tables offer durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. To explore a range of premium picnic tables designed for lasting use, visit RNRTimber Outdoor Furniture and find the perfect addition to your outdoor space.

15 January 2024
SYDNEY (AP) — A day after an Australian became queen of Denmark, her native land on Monday celebrated the unlikely fairy tale with cocktails, picnics and a “Danish Fiesta.”
Mary Donaldson’s journey from Tasmania to the world’s first Australian-born queen has captivated both Danes and Australians.
People gathered to mark the occasion across Australia, including Queen Mary’s hometown of Hobart, the capital of the southern island state of Tasmania.
In Melbourne, scores gathered at Denmark House, one of Melbourne’s oldest social clubs, to celebrate the coronation with a special cultural event.
Tumblr media
“It’s not something that happens every day that you have an Australian becoming queen. I don’t know if it will ever happen again,” Danish Club Vice President Lykka Borup told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Mary’s husband, Crown Prince Frederik, was proclaimed king of the European nation on Sunday, two weeks after his 83-year-old mother, Queen Margrethe II, announced she would be the first Danish royal to abdicate in about 900 years.
Several landmarks in Hobart were lit up in Denmark’s red and white colors, as many residents celebrated with a picnic or a high tea at Taroona Beach, near Queen Mary’s childhood home.
Celebrations were also held at the Slip Inn, the Sydney pub where the royal couple first met during the 2000 Olympics.
The establishment announced it was hosting a “Danish Fiesta” during January, with a special “There’s Something About Mary” cocktail.
Tumblr media
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Queen Mary’s ascension as a “great day.”
“She has carried herself in a way that I think just brings enormous support and pride to all Australians,” he told the ABC’s Radio National program on Monday.
“We’re very proud that Hobart-born Mary Donaldson has become the queen of Denmark,” he said.
Albanese said his government has made a donation to a charity that works to protect the endangered Tasmanian devil.
“Mary grew up in Tasmania, and so it is fitting Australia marks this occasion with a gift to support the conservation of the Tasmanian devil,” he said in a statement.
Tumblr media
Jeremy Rockliff, premier of Mary’s home state, said Tasmanians “could not be prouder of Queen Mary, and there was always an open invitation for the royal couple to visit."
The Tasmanian government also said it would send a gift of a table of Huon pine, a Tasmanian timber, handmade by a local furniture maker, and make a donation to a charity that supports children’s wellbeing.
It’s a cause that the 51-year-old Queen Mary, a mother of four, actively supported during her two decades as crown princess of Denmark.

Hyoyeon drove along the path leading to the house.
Eve gasped. “Woah!”
“This place looks so nice!” Hyoyeon exclaimed. “Is it really for us?” She parked the car before turning it off and getting out.
The house was a two story villa-style timber house, the exterior resembling Tudor style houses. There was a picnic table outside and a hiking trail leading to a pond. The garden had a lot of flower beds with colourful plants.
After collecting their few belongings from the car, the two women walked into the house, where the lights were already on. They put their stuff on the kitchen island before looking at all the rooms. After touring the house, they went back to the kitchen.
“Oh! There are our bags.” Eve pointed to their luggage that was sitting behind the couch in the sitting room. They both collected their luggage and went back upstairs.
“Which room do you want?” Hyoyeon asked when they got to the second floor landing, standing inside the sitting room on the second floor.
Eve hummed as she checked out both rooms once more. “I don’t know. I’m trying to think of which view I’d want.”
Hyoyeon checked both of the rooms as well. “I think you should take this one,” she said when she was inside the room to the left of the sitting room. “This one faces the view of the mountain so you can see everything and I think this side will get sunlight.”
“Doesn’t the other room also get sunlight?” Eve asked, going to check the other room. “Ah, the windows are on the other side.” She exited the room. “Then can I take that one?” She pointed at the room Hyoyeon suggested.
Hyoyeon nodded and exited the room. She took her bags from the sitting room to the other room. Both girls unpacked their clothes into their closets, settling into the house.
Eve plopped onto her bed when she was done unpacking, breathing heavily. From Hyoyeon’s room, she heard her doing the same, causing her to laugh lightly.
“We’re both acting like we just climbed a mountain.” She laughed.
“Nabi!” Hyoyeon shouted.
“Yes!”
“Are you breathing heavily?”
“Yes!”
Hyoyeon laughed loudly. “Me too!”
“Is this what old age is like?” Eve asked.
Hyoyeon scoffed. “I don’t know! I’m not old!”
Eve stayed quiet, shifting her eyes around. Hyoyeon sat up on her bed before leaving her room. She walked to Eve’s room, entering loudly.
“I’m not old,” Hyoyeon complained, laying on top of Eve, who had started giggling as she tried to get the older woman off of her.
“I didn’t say you were!” Eve cried through her giggles.
Hyoyeon scoffed, now tickling Eve. “You implied it!”
“Stop scratching me!”
After some time, both girls calmed down and Hyoyeon sat next to Eve, who was still lying down.
“I want to walk around?” Eve said.
“The house?” Hyoyeon asked, gesturing around.
“No, the area. Just in the garden.” She sat up in bed, stifling a yawn.
Hyoyeon gasped. “Don’t be too enthusiastic. It’ll still be here tomorrow.”
Eve looked at Hyoyeon, using her best puppy-dog eyes. “Please?”
Hyoyeon, who had closed her eyes, shook her head. “No. We spent the day driving, we need to rest.”
Placing her hand on Hyoyeon’s to get her attention, Eve tried again. “Please?”
Hyoyeon shook her head again. “No.”
A few minutes later, the two women were leaving the house, dressed in warm jackets.
“I don’t know why I agreed to this.” Hyoyeon grumbled as she closed the door behind her.
Eve linked their arms together so they could walk. “Because you love me.”
Hyoyeon rolled her eyes. “Not enough to take a walk at night.”
Eve chuckled as they walked out of the garden and down the garden. The moon provided natural lighting to the house, letting them see more of the area. They walked down the driveway, then walked up the mountain, near the trees by the house.
“Oh! There’s a path to enter the second floor,” Eve noted, pointing to a pathway leading to a door on the second floor of the house. “We can enter from downstairs or here.”
Hyoyeon nodded. “I didn’t even notice a door inside.” She looked a little bit ahead. “Is that a hiking trail?” She pointed at a manmade trail leading to a forest. The grass had been worn down by constantly being walked on.
“This house has everything!” Eve exclaimed in excitement, hearing her words echo a second later. “Wow!” She shouted, laughing when she heard the echo.
“I want to go inside!” Hyoyeon tried, hearing her echo. “Are we the only ones here? Why is the echo so clear?”
“Maybe we’re just loud,” Eve guessed.
Hyoyeon nodded. “Let’s go inside.” She walked on the path to the second floor door, trying to open it then resting her head on the surface.
“Is it not unlocked?” Eve asked from behind her.
Hyoyeon nodded, rubbing her head along the door in the process. “We have to go the long way.”
The two women walked down the mountain, then up the driveway into the garden of the house. Eve took a deep breath of the fresh air before following Hyoyeon inside the house. They went back upstairs to their respective rooms. In each of their rooms, there was a study desk with a chair. On the desk was a piece of paper and a few pens. Hyoyeon picked up the paper, having not noticed it before.
“What’s this?” She asked no one in particular.
Welcome to Eve & Hyo’s One Step Vacation. At the end of each day, you’ll write a message to your vacation buddy. It can be as long or short as you like. Enjoy!
Hyoyeon sighed. “Do I have to be creative? This is a problem.” She sat down at the table, getting ready to write something. “We didn’t do anything today, though.” She groaned lightly. “I wonder how Eve is doing.”
Eve stared at the paper, visibly confused. “What type of letter am I writing, though? I need more details.” She looked at the camera that was placed on the desk. “What am I doing? Let me just write anything.” Picking up a pen, she wrote for a short while before stopping. She admired her work before standing up. “That’s the best it’s gonna get.”
In Hyoyeon’s room, she had also finished writing and was getting ready for bed, having changed into the pyjamas provided for the show. She turned off the overhead light, switching on the lamp on her nightstand.
“Goodnight!” She shouted to Eve.
“Goodnight!” Eve responded, already in bed.
The next day, Eve woke up to sunlight on her face. She squeezed her eyes shut before rubbing them. She slowly sat up, flicking her eyes around the room as she adapted to the brightness of her room.
“Light,” she mumbled, covering her eyes. She peeked through a gap in her fingers. “I like it.” Stretching her arms out, she groaned in relief, feeling some of her bones click. She rubbed her hands across her face, slowly waking up. She reached over to check her phone, gasping softly when she saw the time. She got out of bed, doing a full body stretch as she yawned. Leaving her room, she made her way over to Hyoyeon’s room, softly knocking before opening the door, where she was met with the sight of Hyoyeon still asleep.
Eve stood at the door of Hyoyeon’s room for a few seconds before walking up to her. She took a few photos of Hyoyeon’s face before putting her phone down and laying herself across the older woman.
Hyoyeon groaned, feeling Eve’s weight on her. “Are you crazy?” She grumbled, voice raspy.
“It’s eleven o’clock,” Eve responded, voice equally as raspy.
Hyoyeon lifted her head to hear Eve better. “What?”
“It’s eleven o’clock,” Eve repeated, reaching for her phone to show Hyoyeon the time.
“This is the latest I’ve slept in in a while,” Hyoyeon commented, pushing herself up, but stopping because of Eve. “Get off.”
Eve rolled herself off of Hyoyeon until she reached the end of the bed. “I’m off.”
Hyoyeon pushed herself up. “How did we sleep until so late?” She asked, now resting against the headboard.
“We must’ve been very tired,” Eve reasoned. “We’ve been working really hard.”
“Right. We should allow ourselves to rest. ” Hyoyeon scratched her head as she yawned. “Should we go make breakfast?”
“There’s no food, remember?” Eve mumbled, causing Hyoyeon to sigh.
Before the women went on their walk, they stopped in the kitchen to see what food there was.
“There’s nothing,” Eve said with a gasp, looking in the fridge, “only water.”
“Really?” Hyoyeon peeked into the fridge before moving to check the pantry. “There’s nothing here, too.”
“We have to go grocery shopping. Unless the staff make us work for the food.”
Hyoyeon waved her off. “They’re not that cruel. We’ll just go out to get food.” She looked at one of the cameras. “You’re not that cruel, right?”
“Let’s go to a café,” Eve suggested. “We can eat breakfast and lunch.”
Yawning, Hyoyeon nodded. “Okay. Let’s get ready.”
Twenty minutes later, both women exited their rooms after taking showers and getting dressed. They walked downstairs, putting on their shoes when they reached the entrance of the house. Opening the door when she was done, Eve gasped as she saw the garden in daylight.
“It’s so pretty!” She squealed, turning back to look at Hyoyeon, who had just finished putting on her shoes.
“There’s so much grass everywhere,” Hyoyeon commented.
“It’s a garden,” Eve pointed out. “What else is supposed to be here?”
“Nothing. I’m just observing.”
Eve pointed to the far left of the garden. “There’s a swinging bench.” She jogged to it, sitting down and letting the momentum swing her back and forth. Closing her eyes, she inhaled deeply. “This is nice.”
Since Eve had her eyes closed, she didn’t notice Hyoyeon taking photos of her. Hyoyeon pocketed her phone, crossed her arms and cleared her throat very loudly, causing Eve to open her eyes.
“Are you trying to starve me?” Hyoyeon asked, jutting her hip out. “Let’s go eat!”
Eve stood up from the chair with a huff. “Fine,” she groaned out before turning back to the chair. “I’ll be back for you.” She jogged to reach Hyoyeon, who had already opened the driver’s door of the car, slinging her arm around the older woman’s shoulder. “Where are we going for breakfast?”
Hyoyeon hummed in thought. “Jiyeon-ssi’s restaurant? It’s the only place we know,” she explained, chuckling.
Eve nodded in agreement, also chuckling. “Let’s look at other restaurants after?” She suggested, walking to the passengers side of the car.
Both women entered the car as Hyoyeon responded, “Okay. And then we have to buy groceries.”
Eve clicked her fingers. “Groceries.” She put on her seat belt as Hyoyeon started the car. When they had made it onto the main road, she spoke up again. “By the way, who’s paying?”
Hyoyeon widened her eyes as Eve started chuckling. “We both left our bags at home,” she said, clicking her tongue. “Who decided it was a good idea to leave two idiots together?”
“Ahjumma, I’m not an idiot,” Eve denied, looking out of her window. “Being forgetful doesn’t make you dumb. And we have Apple Pay,” she reminded her friend. “We’re set.”
“You’re smart.”
“Right?”
They drove in silence until they reached Yunhui’s restaurant, walking into the building and sitting at the same table they sat at the day before. Yunhui soon went to them, making small talk before taking their orders. When she brought their food, they immediately dug in.
“The food here is amazing,” Hyoyeon groaned.
“I think Yunhui halmeoni deserves a Nobel peace prize,” Eve said. “She’s doing a huge service to today’s society.”
“You should buy her one,” Hyoyeon encouraged.
Eve picked up her phone. “How much does a Nobel peace prize cost?” She asked as she typed. “‘Be nominated by an eligible nominee,’” she read. “I’m eligible. ‘Wait for the judges to vote.’ What nonsense is this? How do I make sure she wins?”
“Write a letter of recommendation,” Hyoyeon told her.
Eve looked up from her phone. “A letter of recommendation? That probably requires brain strength.” She nodded to herself. “I went to an arts school,” she said, causing Hyoyeon to laugh. “I didn’t study essay writing.”
Hyoyeon hiccuped, still laughing. “Yah, I also went to an art school, but even I’d be able to write a letter of recommendation.”
“Then you should do it!” Eve whined. “Do it for Yunhui halmeoni.”
Hyoyeon nodded. “Okay, I will.”
The women finished their meal, Eve volunteering to pay for it. After paying, they went to the car driving back to their house to fetch their bags.
“Now we can begin our day,” Eve commented when she and Hyoyeon buckled their seatbelts.
Hyoyeon started the car as her eyes flitted to the time on the head unit. “It’s one in the afternoon.”
“One PM is the new eight AM,” Eve supplied. “Let’s start the day!” She cheered.
“Let’s start the day!” Hyoyeon echoed.

trouble is Wilderness Area is already a different thing. Federally designated wilderness is a zone meant to be "pristine" nature, as opposed to developed for recreation uses (picnic tables, RV parks, visitor centers) or used for timber (most non-wilderness federal forest land will be periodically harvested from). There are extremely strict limits on what kind of management you can do in a wilderness area, and changing the boundaries requires an act of Congress. There are usually a few foot or horse trails with very basic structures made with materials available on site (natural logs and rocks, not squared lumber), machinery of all kinds is banned (no chainsaws or bulldozers, yes even during a wildfire), and the trail maintenance is done entirely with hand tools, which is why we still use crosscut saws in trail work.
This STILL does not stop people who don't know any better from walking straight in with flip flops and no water. My last ranger district had a wilderness trail that had become a major tourist attraction, and half of the station thought it was better to just Not fix any of the bridges so that people would turn around.
Any conspiracy theory about people going missing in National Parks is automatically silly to me. Like "Why are National Parks such a hotbed of disappearances???" because they're full of idiots. You've got thousands of people who've never pissed outdoors in their life wandering around the woods/desert/mountain with zero experience and zero gear and zero understanding that this place can kill them. You don't see as many disappearances in wild areas because people don't go to them unless they have some background knowledge. Whereas you get tour buses full of old folks and suburban families shuttling people into National Parks 365 days a year. If you took the same amount of buffoons and dropped them in the actual wilderness the disappearances would be significantly higher than at the parks. Use your brain.

Today was our last full day of driving, and we didn't have far to go. Our plan was to stay near enough to Shannon Airport to easily drop off our car in the morning and make our bus and train to Dublin, but we didn't want to stay at the airport hotel, so we decided to stay in the little crossroads of Bunratty, which is nearby.
But first we wanted to visit the Lough Gur area. Here around this natural lake is evidence of human habitation back at least 6,000 years and probably much further. The earliest traces are of Neolithic sites, but there are also traces of Iron and Bronze Ages right through Medieval and later times. The spring fed lake was drained down a bit in the 19th century to create more farm land, and that revealed many artifacts, including a wonderful bronze shield that is now in the museum in Dublin, and other items that have wound up in the British Museum.
The visitor center here has a good interactive display with a timeline, and trails lead to some of the main sites near the center, including foundations from an early Medieval cluster of houses, an island built up with timber and stone dating from the bronze age, and a castle and pigeon house dating from the 15th century, as well as a lime kiln from the Elizabethan era. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to walk entirely around the lake because of private property, but there is also a trail to the top of the bluff overlooking the lake for beautiful views.
The lakeside area that is public park has a wide lawn and picnic tables and just seems to be a popular family park, especially on the last day of a three-day weekend. We walked all the trails we could, and then went to explore several other nearby sites that were accessible from a road near the lake. We had heard of one of them, but the others we heard about from the guide at the visitor center.
We stopped at one little parking lot, and walked to a church dating from the 15th century, and a neolithic wedge tomb that is probably 5-6,000 years old. The latter was extremely moss covered, and quite different from the portal tomb we visited yesterday. Here the entire structure was outlined with vertical stones forming a "fence" around the tomb. And this was actually a tomb, as the remains of at least 12 individuals were found here during excavation.
We also visited the Grange Stone Circle, which is Ireland's largest stone circle, 150 feet in diameter, and has 113 standing stones. It is also very different from the others in that it is built up on a wide berm that is several feet above the surrounding fields. The stones are also contiguous around the circle, which is very close to perfect in shape, so once inside it is hard to find a way out except through the entrance. The largest stone is over eight feet tall and almost as broad and goes into the ground at least another five feet. It also weighs about 60 tons. This was quite obviously an important ceremonial site, and if you stand in the middle of the circle facing the largest stone and clap your hands, the sound echoes all around from other directions. We tried it and it definitely works. If you stay off to one side as little as 4-5 feet away, there is no echo.
Off just to the north several hundred yards away is another more traditional stone circle, and a tree has grown up through one of the stones, splitting it in pieces, but the stone is still standing. When we arrived at the site there were a lot of cars parked in the lot, but we were the only ones at the site. As we were leaving, a large group of people were returning from a walk across the farmer's fields - they had obviously been looking for something else. Considering the large crowds over at the main lakeside park, it was great to have this mystical place to ourselves.
From here we headed to Bunratty, which involved getting onto the Motorway in a very convoluted manner - the Irish haven't figured out how to work entrances and exits from one Motorway to another that don't involve complete stops, turns with no traffic signals, etc. Somehow we made it, though, although when we got to what we thought would be a sleepy village, people were parked everywhere and the streets were full of pedestrians. Bunratty has a fairly well-preserved castle which is privately owned and the centerpiece of a "folk village", so it is an expensive tourist draw. Our B&B was about a kilometer down the road, and it was peaceful and quiet there once we got through town.
We did want to go back to the village and check out the pubs, so our host told us about a trail shortcut that mostly avoided the road, and by the time we got back to the village, it was practically empty - the castle had closed and almost everyone had gone home. So we stopped at one of the oldest and most famous Irish pubs - Durty Nellie's (established 1620), and sat in the early evening sun and enjoyed a pint. I remember a Durty Nellie's back outside Chicago in Palatine, and there seem to be more throughout the US and other countries, but they are all based on this well-known pub.
We took the shortcut back to our lodging and made a meal of the leftover food we have been carrying for snacks and meals, as we need to consolidate for our bus and train rides to Dublin. It's always a little hard to make everything fit in our bags after the luxury of spreading out in the car, but we are pretty well packed again.
Tomorrow we turn in the rental car, take the bus to the Limerick train station and then the train to Dublin for two nights in the big city. We won't miss driving on the narrow roads here, that's for sure.

Getting started
I collected the wood from Andy's. Unfortunately it has been sitting in the open for a long time, and so is rather wet. Also, it is all 2.4m stobs rather than the 1.8 that it should have been. Hopefully I'll be able to use the excess for the fill in pieces for the deck.
The mitre saw works fine, and I've made sure it is correctly zeroed for the angles.
Three clamps secures it to the picnic table.
I'll have to cut a piece of wood to support the free end of the stobs.
It was snowing in the early morning, but when it had stopped I set up the mitre saw to do the ends on the longitudinal timbers. I found an ex storage heater brick which was just the right size to support the ends, and used a clamp to line up with the saw fence. I was very careful to get the correct angle, and off I went. Did one end of the first 14 stobs before lunch. Even the driest were really wet.
Finally finished all the stob ends and set up to do the end rebates next.
After a day off when I went cycling, and this morning when I had to do some repairs at Dunmore, I got back to the bridge. All the bevelled ends have now got the first cut for the cross beam cutout. The second cut will have to be done with the circular saw as the angle is too extreme for the mitre.
Before packing up for the day, I did the first mid beam slot. Having carefully set the depth limiter to 67mm I trench cut with the mitre saw, and the used a router to clear out between cuts, finishing off with a plane. I'm very happy with the results and I'll do the other 23 tomorrow.
I ordered some coach screws from Amazon for the assembly, and checked I had the right size drill.
At last good weather and nothing more to be done to Dunmore. I did get started yesterday before rain stopped play, but today I completed all the cross beam recesses. It was a complicated and time consuming task involving trench cutting with the mitre saw, chiselling, routing, and a touch of planing.
The depth stop on the mitre saw isn't very precise, and with it set at 67mm from the base, the timber needed to be held away from the fence by 75mm
Another dry day, though rather cold.
I did all the cutouts for the cross beams today, except for the double size ones for the ground beams. Rather tricky work with the circular saw leaving a lot of tidying up by hand with a chisel.
All these cuts penetrate into the interior of the stob that is in affect shielded from the pressure treatment, so I have ordered some Cuprinol to treat the new surfaces.
Next job is to make a start on the cross beams (and to finish off those awkward end recesses).

How to Choose the Perfect Picnic Table for Your Outdoor Gatherings in Australia?
Hello Everyone! Choosing the perfect picnic table for your outdoor gatherings is a delightful endeavour that involves considering a few key factors. When searching for the ideal picnic table, it's crucial to balance functionality, aesthetics, and durability.
Material Matters: Begin by evaluating the materials. Opt for picnic tables crafted from solid timber for a timeless and sturdy choice. Timber not only adds a touch of natural beauty but also ensures longevity, making it a perfect fit for the diverse Australian outdoor conditions.
Size and Space: Think about how big your outdoor area is and how many people you often entertain. A picnic table should offer enough seating without overcrowding the area. Compact designs are ideal for smaller spaces, while larger tables accommodate bigger gatherings.
