The first thing I hear when I open my eyes is Rayah yelling through the wall.

“WYLIE! YOU BETTER BE UP, I SWEAR TO GOD—”

God. Here we go.

I roll over, reaching blindly for my phone. 7:46 a.m. It’s way too early. I don’t even have to be at practice until ten. But Rayah? She acts like she’s on payroll to keep me on schedule. Cousin-slash-roommate-slash-self-declared-guardian. Nobody asked her to be all that—but she still is. Every single day.

I groan, dragging the blanket over my head. “You promised you’d stop waking me up before eight,” I mumble into my pillow.

She doesn’t care. She never does.

“I lied.”

I don’t have to look to know she’s already cracked the door open. Rayah lives for this moment.

I hear her walk in. “You up yet?”

“No.”

“You better be.”

I don’t respond fast enough, so she yanks the blanket clean off of me and stands there like she’s done something noble.

“You’re ridiculous,” I grumble.

“Wrong. I’m responsible,” she corrects. “If I don’t drag you outta bed, you’ll show up to Galen at 10:03, granola bar in your mouth, camera half-dead, and I refuse to let you embarrass the family name.”

“I have this,” I argue, even as I sit up and squint against the blue LED glow in my room—blue curtains, blue rug, blue light strips, blue nails still chipped from editing last night.

“Do you?” she asks, already on her way out. “Because your alarm went off ten minutes ago and you’re still in pajamas.”

She’s got a point. But I don’t tell her that. I just mumble something under my breath and start getting ready before she has time to come back in and do it for me.

By the time I get to the gym, everyone’s already warming up. Kayleigh’s talking trash. Coach is yelling something. Juju’s locked in as always, already drenched in focus. It’s just another day at USC.

I slip to my usual spot on the sideline and pull my camera strap over my head. My safe zone. This is where I breathe easiest—clicking shutters, freezing moments nobody else sees.

Kayleigh’s the first to spot me.

“Wylie!” she calls, jogging over. “Come get a pic of me cooking Juju real quick.”

I laugh, raising my camera. “You’ve been airballing since warm-ups.”

“You’re lying. I made one.”

“Wow. One. I’m honored to witness greatness.”

She gives me this fake-offended look and then yells across the court, “JUUJU! Wylie says I’m her favorite!”

I don’t even have time to process that before I see Juju turn, completely unfazed, draining a jumper like it’s nothing.

“She told me I was her favorite yesterday,” Juju calls back without even looking.

My cheeks heat up. Oh my God.

That’s when I feel a familiar presence behind me. I don’t have to look to know it’s Rayah.

“Told you,” she whispers way too close to my ear. “Told you that girl got a little crush.”

I groan. “Please stop.”

“I’m just saying. You live next to her, you take more pictures of her than anybody, and you smile like a dork every time she looks at you.”

“Rayah, seriously. Stop.”

She just grins. “I’m looking out.”

“This is not looking out.”

“This is exactly looking out,” she says, like she’s some wise elder or something. “You’re soft. And Juju’s… Juju.”

She’s not wrong. Juju is intense. She walks into a room and your heart starts preparing for impact before you even know she’s there. But I’ve done a good job ignoring it. Pretending like I don’t notice her voice across a crowded court. Pretending like I don’t slow down edits when she’s in the frame.

“She’s just a friend,” I say quietly.

Rayah raises her eyebrows. “You sure about that?”

I don’t answer. I just lift my camera back up, hoping the lens can distract me. Hoping I don’t accidentally catch myself looking at Juju like I’ve got feelings.

Which, okay, maybe I do.

A little.

Rayah sighs beside me, her voice lower now. “Look… I know I mess with you. But I mean it when I say I’ll swing on anybody that hurts you. Juju or not.”

I blink and lower my camera. “Even if it’s me hurting myself?”

“Especially then,” she says.

That’s the thing about Rayah. Yeah, she drives me crazy. She’s in my business 25/8. But it’s love. All of it. Sharp, relentless, overbearing love—but real love. She sees more than I want her to. Maybe she always has.

“Thanks,” I murmur.

Rayah shrugs like it’s nothing. “Don’t thank me yet. You still owe me for those Pop-Tarts.”

Then she’s gone, yelling something at Juju about “heart-eyes” and filing a complaint with Coach.

I shake my head. I swear I’m gonna kill her one day.

But not today.

Today, I raise my camera again, zoom in on Juju just as she catches the ball at the top of the key.

Caretaker's Time Journal

CW: vomiting mention

1:34 a.m.- Whumpee came into my room, hot with fever. 102.5 temperature. Gave them a towel for their forehead. Tried to give them 500 mg of medicine and a cup of water. Wouldn't swallow. Stayed up with me, we talked about happy things.

3:21 a.m.- Whumpee threw up on the floor. Cleaned it up. They're crying now. Couldn't check their fever again

4:03 a.m.- They're asleep now. Didn't take any medicine. Gave them blankets and changed out their water cup. They muttered something in their sleep. I think they have nightmares.

4:46 a.m.- Found whumpee crying in their bed, was right about the nightmares. They thought whumper was coming for them. They let me wrap them in blankets again. Put on a movie. Still wouldn't drink anything, but they tried a little bit of bread from my fingers. My heart breaks for them. Checked fever again- 102.9. It's gone up. I'm worried for them.

5:31 a.m.- They're passed out, asleep. Ragged breathing patterns noticed...I hope that doesn't indicate something more serious. I hope they sleep for a couple hours...

6:12 a.m.- They woke up and threw up.

6:45 a.m.- Begged them to eat. They ate more bread, took medicine (500 mg) and drank hot tea. Temperature is at 101.3- they're still sick...but they're better. They're better.

7:52 a.m.- Ate a little bit of breakfast. Fed them a bit of egg. 101.5 fever.

9:04 a.m.- 100.1 fever. The medicine helped. They're in bed, sleeping.

3:59 p.m.- They woke up with a fever again. 101.8. Shit. Let them take more medicine. Had them eat a banana and drink water. They're crying again, they think they're a burden. I tried to tell them they're not. They didn't believe me, they looked dizzy...I hugged them and let them rest.

7:54 p.m.- The medicine worked. We're cuddling together. I don't care if I get sick too. They need me.

Leonardo my beloved <3 I thought about drawing every iteration of Leo before my brain cell kicked back in and went, no that’s insane? So i settled for drawing each Leo from each tv series! Including the one that will be coming out on paramount at some point. Made two versions bc i couldn’t decide between doing this challenge in a more inktober style or just going ham, i eventually settled on doing both and seeing how quickly i get burnt out lmao. So we’ll see in the future if colored ones stay or not.

Wanna give a special thanks to the creator @mikasleaf of this challenges prompt list btw! This will be the first time I’ve ever participated in a 31 day challenge, but I’m really excited to! So thanks so much for making it!!!

Now for a little anecdote: I adore all the turtles, like genuinely love all of them, so picking a favorite is REALLY HARD. HOWEVER. One really funny thing about me that helped make the choice to draw Leo was the fact that as a child I watched the 03 tmnt show on 4kids. I didn’t really understand all the details with Leo’s character back then, but he was my absolute favorite. Not because of his swords, or the fact he was a good big brother, or a really talented ninja, no, none of that whatsoever. I loved him so much as a kid because of one reason—HE. WAS. BLUE! And blue was my favorite color, so obviously he had to be my favorite turtle. I still adore Leo with all my heart ofc, but now as an adult I horde ALL of the tmnt boys bc i love each of their characters for individual reasons, but this boy right here? He got me into the series all bc he was blue. Gotta love how child brains work lmao.
